Introduction By Sir Peter Ricketts GCMG Her Majesty’s Ambassador to France and Honorary Patron of The British School

I am delighted to wish The British School of Paris many happy returns on its 60th birthday ! In that time, the BSP has gone from strength to strength, to become a great school, with a wide and well-deserved reputation for excellence, and also as a showcase for British education in France. I know that many French parents, as well as those from Britain and many other countries, value the very special atmosphere of the school, as well as its academic achievements. On top of that, it offers its pupils exciting opportunities in sport, drama and the arts.

One of the great achievements of the last decade has been the development of the Junior School in its wonderful new building. This has opened up the BSP experience to younger children and has been a huge success. As Honorary Patron, I wish BSP, and all its staff, parents and pupils, every success in the years ahead.

elcome to this year’s Prize Giving and a particularly warm welcome back to The British School of Paris to our Guest of Honour, Robert Bell, Old Parisian. I am very proud to welcome you all to 2014’s Prize Giving ceremony. We are delighted to bring together students, staff, governors and invited guests to celebrate what has been an incredibly special year in the history of The British School of Paris, our 60th anniversary year. This Prize Giving ceremony serves many different purposes. It is an opportunity for us to come together to celebrate achievement, a chance to publicly recognise the skills and talents that have been on display throughout the year; in the classroom, on the playing field, on expeditions, on stage, in musical performances and in the debating arena. Teachers have this opportunity to bestow rewards on those students who have gone the ‘extra mile’, those who have persevered, displayed enthusiasm and tried extremely hard to do their best. We seek to acknowledge those who consistently perform to a high academic standard. We are proud to award over three hundred prizes because we believe you deserve it! For those students who do not receive public acknowledgement today, we hope that you remember that there will indeed be other opportunities to seize; at school, at university, at work.

This special day is about motivating and inspiring you to go on to make the most of your talents. There is nothing greater than welcoming back a former student to encourage you to strive to do your best. Rob is still ‘chasing the dream’. He once sat where you are today - there is so much that you can learn from him. I hope that today leaves you with the feeling of how lucky you are to be a part of this very special community, how lucky you are to be a member of the BSP. If you are staying here at the BSP, we promise to do our best to support you and help you on your way to achieving what you want and enable you to begin to follow your dream. If you are moving on, I hope you will always treasure the time you have spent here at the BSP. I wish you all every success in the future.

Guest of Honour Rob Bell This year we welcome presenter, broadcaster and triathelete, Rob Bell, Old Parisian back to The British School of Paris, as our guest speaker. Rob arrived at The British School of Paris in 1989 and studied right through to completion of his A-Levels in 1997. He went on to study for a Masters in Mechanical Engineering with French at the University of Bath. He now lives in London and works as a TV Presenter. Rob has a thirst for adventure, which has taken him to all corners and extremes of the planet; from canoeing the most remote rivers of the Yukon to rallying through the Sahara, trekking the Arctic wilderness on a climate science reconnaissance and wake-boarding in the Northern Singapore Channel. He enjoys pushing his own endurance limits and has raced many marathons, triathlons and the Ironman in recent years. His next adventure planned for January 2015 is to run 7 marathons across 7 continents in 7 days. Influenced by his parents and his grandad, Rob also has a love and incurable curiosity for all things science and engineering. From the smallest detail of the products, machines and structures that define our modern lifestyles to the natural wonders of the planet’s wilderness, Rob loves to get hands-on, to explore and to find out what makes things work. This interest was evident at an early age and to his Mum’s despair, when he completely dismantled the vacuum cleaner beyond repair, just to see how it functioned. After graduating from university and a short stint working as a ski lift operator in Canada, Rob spent 8 years working in Business Development and managing UK Government Programmes in the environmental sector. In 2011, he took a leap of faith into the world of broadcasting and has not looked back since. He has presented engineering series for BBC 2, Travel Channel and Quest as well as films for many large engineering corporates including British Airways, BMW, BAE Systems and HS2. Catering to the more intrepid side of his personality, he also presents his own adventure series on Travel Channel called Man Vs World – nominated this year for an RTS Best Factual Series award.

Science and Technology was important to Rob at the BSP and he fondly remembers building models and robots (to varying degrees of success) in the Realisation Base and conducting experiments with his classmates on the banks of the Seine. To this day, he maintains that he had absolutely nothing to do with the evacuation of the Science Block when ‘someone’ accidently broke a thermometer during a physics lesson and poured highly-toxic mercury down the sink. Rob threw himself into extra-curricular activities and represented the BSP in football, rugby, cross-country, choir and orchestra. He still plays in bands and sports teams regularly with friends from school and if he has one regret, it’s that despite participating in 9 separate ISST tournaments, he left the BSP without ever winning a gold medal. It still hurts.

“I can’t believe it’s the 60th Anniversary. BSP is such a special place to me - it really is a huge honour to be back.”
