Certificate Program Description The LAC Academy offers fee-based professional certificate programs to develop current and future adult educators. All LAC Academy certificate programs can make a difference in your career and life by providing you with: Core knowledge necessary to be an effective adult educator n Opportunities to share ideas, experiences and networks with peers n An opportunity to try out new strategies and methods with immediate feedback n A valuable credential from a reputable leader in adult education. In this Institute, participants will use the lens of critical pedagogy to examine current educational policies and practices and learn practical ways to use popular education methodologies in and out of the classroom.
Basic Education (ABE), High School Equivalency (HSE), or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to adults
n Anyone offering staff or professional development to adults in the fields of workplace training, in-house corporate and computer training, vocational rehabilitation, union trade, craft and business training, healthcare industry staff development, or proprietary non-degree adult education
n Anyone interested in developing a new specialization in the teaching of adults
Format: Participants attend 18 hours of on-site classes, in addition to 30 hours of study and reflection online, as part of a professional community of practice.
Module 1: Adult Education and Social Justice
This program serves as initial and advanced qualifications for:
n Anyone considering a career in teaching Adult
(50Hours/5CEU’s) Paulo Freire’s work in adult literacy has influenced people working in adult education, community development, community health and many other fields. The institute presents Freirean philosophy in a hands-on approach for implementation in adult literacy education programs.

This workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to key concepts and principles in Popular Education and Critical Pedagogy. It explores the linkages between adult education and social justice issues and views liberatory education in a globalized world. A problem posing approach, case studies and theater will be used for reflection and application.
Module 2: Adult Education and Workforce In this workshop, participants will explore the issues of workforce education, welfare reform, and women at work. Using theater analysis, popular education techniques, participatory action research, POV film and case studies, participants will gain an understanding of the practical applications of popular education in the adult classroom.
Module 3: Adult Education and Democracy This workshop will cover the vital link between adult education and participatory democracy. Readings and discussions will revolve around viewing adult learners as stakeholders in the classroom and society. Emphasis will be on the central theme of building collective knowledge in the adult classroom. Participants will collectively create a mural and develop action plans and follow-up projects. By the end of the Institute participants will be able to: eflect on their current teaching and organizing practices n R using the lens of popular education/critical pedagogy n E xamine critical analytical tools that students could use when interpreting current social issues ain new insights from discussions on the connections n G between current global economic issues and education practices emonstrate through practice an understanding of critical n D pedagogy/popular education xplore the challenges and discuss ways of using popular n E education/ critical pedagogy in the classroom, community, workplace, or other learning sites.
Online Learning All LAC Academy Certificate programs are blended models, incorporating both on-site and online learning environments. Incorporated into each certificate are tutorials and support to make sure students have the tools they need to succeed in the online portion of our certificate programs.
