The modular minigolf course, given its shape, structure and symmetry, can be altered and arranged in infinite possible combinations. This allows golf players to set their own game levels by configure the course themselves.

Component: acoustic layer Function: acoustic diffusion Sscatterd across the uneven surface. This greatly diffuses sound waves which could eliminate any undesirable echoes when needed. The cubicle pattern demonstrated here could be replaced with any pre-designed tessellation according to needs.
Component: connector Function: connect the acoustic layer with the lighting layers with flexibility for adjustment Inspired by rebar couplers, each steel connector (three per lighting panel) is composed of two threaded steel bars and one coupler that has multiple bolts on top. By adjusting the length each bar is screwed into the coupler, the spacing between layers could be easily adjusted by the user.
Demonstration of spacing adjustment In a acoustically demanding environment such as auditoriums or conference rooms, the couplers allow the connectors to be adjusted in length, which creates assembled acoustic panels with various spacings to absorb sound waves of all different lengths.
Lighting and maintenance Because the connectors are adjustable in heights, light bulbs of different sizes can be fitted in different functional zones of a single building. Moreover if a lamp was broken it could easily be replaced by simply screwing out the lower steel bar and lowering down the lighting layers.
Assembling process of U-Needs Inspired by Lego blocks the U-Needs ‘click’ with each other via bumps on all four sides apart from the traditional mortar joining method. In this way not only can the overall structural stability be doubly secured, but the precision and speed of the construction process could also be considerably enhanced.

Highway soundwall Function: mitigating highway noises in sensitive land use areas with potentially integrated lighting Similar to acoustic panel, a soundwall consists of U-Needs can refract sound waves due to its undulating surface. Moreover lighting can also be contained in between the layers, providing more space for vehicles.

Entry for 6th Concrete Design Competition_U-Need One unit to combine them all, one unit to suit them all... The U-Need is one simple concrete building unit that has the flexibility to be transformed into almost any construction unit. Like a brick or a lego block, it can be easily assembled into an acoustic barrier, a lighting panel, a structural wall or an elegant piece of furniture. More importantly its pre-determined form and dimension can also provide today’s architects with the freedom to come up with ingenious design solutions that addresses both functional needs and aesthetic requirements. The unique appeal and durability of concrete enable U-Need to be employed in almost any situation.
