FREE EXHIBITIONS About Face: Contemporary Portraiture August 9, 2013–January 19, 2014 | Gallery L11 This exhibition explores the global diversity of contemporary photographic portraiture since 2000 and includes works by twenty-nine internationally acclaimed artists. CLOSING IN JULY Brad Kahlhamer: Bowery Nation Through July 21 | Gallery L8 Contemporary Native American artist Brad Kahlhamer transforms the Project Space with a magical, multi-tiered powwow float carrying 122 figurative and bird sculptures made of traditional materials and urban detritus. Welcome to his “Third Place.” This exhibition is supported by the Campbell-Calvin Fund and Elizabeth C. Bonner Charitable Trust for exhibitions and the Rheta A. Sosland Fund.

Invented Worlds: Photographs by Ruth Thorne-Thomsen Through July 28 | Gallery L11 Ruth Thorne-Thomsen uses the simplest of imaging devices, the pinhole camera, to rethink the expressive potential of photography. By making or arranging subjects to be photographed by this technique, ThorneThomsen created her signature work: a dreamlike vision of wonder and discovery resulting in a landscape of imagination.

FREE EXHIBITIONS Early American Silver from the Cahn Collection Through November 3 On view in American, European and Contemporary Galleries Exceptional works from the collection of Paul and Elissa Cahn explore the techniques, forms and politics of colonial American silver. On view throughout the museum, the exhibition explores the craft of the American silversmith, including techniques still in use today.

FALL SESSION OF STUDIO CLASSES FOR AGES 3–ADULT The world-class collection of the Nelson-Atkins’ is the inspiration for our studio programs. Direct experience with art in the galleries provides students with a foundation for art making in the Ford Learning Center classrooms. Experience a unique learning environment for children and adults unlike any other in Kansas City!

ENROLLMENT Fall class public enrollment begins July 1 online (nelson-atkins.org/ calendar), or by phone 816.751.1ART (1278), option 2. Enrollment is on a first-call, first-served basis. Credit/debit card payment required. Cost: Museum members receive a discount on classes, 30% for Society of Fellows and 20% for Friends of Art. The discounted member prices are listed in that order with the public price last. Please provide the following information when you call: Student’s name, address, date of birth, home phone, emergency phone and the parent/guardian name. We accept individual enrollments only; one person may not enroll students from multiple families. Enroll early—class size is limited. Enrollment deadline is three days prior to a class or workshop. Classes that do not reach a minimum enrollment will be cancelled and fees refunded. Parking for museum members is free; nonmembers parking for more than 30 minutes, either to attend class or wait while their student is in class, will pay $5 per vehicle. Cancellations/Transfer Credits: Students can cancel an enrollment five business days prior to a class or one-time workshop to receive a refund less a $15 cancellation fee per enrollment. Transfers from one class to another can be up until five business days prior to a class with a $10 transfer fee. No refunds or transfers will be made for cancellations made less than five business days prior or due to missing a class. We do not issue credits toward future classes or workshops if you cancel an enrollment or miss a class.

Visit the fall exhibition Impressionist France: Visions of Nation from Le Gray to Monet and discuss how artists create landscapes and use expressive brushstrokes to make mono prints of your own landscape setting.

DAY OF THE DEAD Ages 7–12 with adult 6:30–8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 $35/$40/$50 per adult-child pair Whimsical skeletons—calacas— are often seen in Day of the Dead celebrations. Learn more about the symbolism behind the skeletons and create your own out of clay. Participants will glaze and leave their work to be fired. Learn about the four gentlemen in seasons and symbols in Chinese painting that inspire the hope of growth, the struggle for survival, the understanding of change and strength for overcoming. Class will cover visual language of brush and ink, both traditional and contemporary, and some calligraphy.
