Never before seen in this region, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view more than 100 paintings, sculptures, photographs and drawings from the esteemed Gelman collection, celebrating the rich artistic traditions of the Mexico of yesterday and the vitality of Mexican art today.

Invented Worlds: Photographs by Ruth Thorne-Thomsen Through July 28 | Gallery L11 Ruth Thorne-Thomsen uses the simplest of imaging devices, the pinhole camera, to rethink the expressive potential of photography. By making or arranging subjects to be photographed by this technique, ThorneThomsen created her signature work: a dreamlike vision of wonder and discovery resulting in a landscape of imagination.

The Feminine Mystique: Portraits of and by Women Through August 11 | Gallery P27 A tribute to Betty Friedan’s groundbreaking book, The Feminine Mystique, this exhibition of late 19th and early 20th century prints and drawings explores the widening gap between society’s desire to maintain traditional roles for women and women’s desire to freely determine their own course in life. FREE EXHIBITIONS Early American Silver from the Cahn Collection Through November 3 | On view in American, European & Contemporary Galleries Exceptional works from the collection of Paul and Elissa Cahn explore the techniques, forms and politics of colonial American silver. On view throughout the museum, the exhibition explores the craft of the American silversmith, including techniques still in use today.

Mythological Subjects June 12–December 15 | Gallery P13 Prints and drawings from the 15th–18th centuries show the ways in which artists treated the myths of ancient Greece and Rome during a period of renewed interest in classicism. Extended day and lunch options: Students may be dropped off at 8:30 a.m. and picked up at 5:30 p.m. to accommodate parent schedules. Cost: additional $75 per week. Monday will be pizza day, ordered from a local restaurant. Tuesday–Friday, bring a non-perishable, sack lunch including drink or purchase box lunches, $35 for four days, from the museum restaurant. Our summer featured exhibition Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Masterpieces of Modern Mexico provides the focus for several classes. Enjoy the unique benefits of viewing, discussing, and gaining inspiration from art in the museum’s galleries, making the Ford Learning Center Kansas City’s premier art education facility!

We accept individual enrollments only; one person may not enroll students from multiple families. Enroll early—class size is limited. Enrollment deadline is three days prior to a class or workshop. Classes that do not reach a minimum enrollment will be cancelled and fees refunded. Parking for museum members is free; nonmembers parking for more than 30 minutes, either to attend class or wait while their student is in class, will pay $5 per vehicle.

Cancellation, refund and transfer policies: Students can cancel an enrollment five business days prior to a class or one-time workshop to receive a refund, less a $15 cancellation fee per enrollment. Transfers from one class to another can be requested up until five business days prior to a class, with a $10 transfer fee. No refunds or transfers will be made for cancellations made less than five business days prior to start of class or due to missing a class. We do not issue credits toward future classes or workshops if you cancel an enrollment or miss a class.

Special class in collaboration with the University of Missouri-Kansas City EXPLORING THE PINHOLE CAMERA 1:30–3:30 p.m. | Tuesday–Thursday, July 16–18 $64/$80 | Ages: 14–adult Instructor: Leonor Jurado In this world of high technology, did you know that it is possible to make your own camera? Build and use a pinhole camera and visit the photography exhibition Invented Worlds to see examples of photos created using this technique. Students also will investigate how their pinhole optics can be brought into the digital age. Tuesday, class meets at the Nelson-Atkins. Wednesday and Thursday, class meets at UMKC’s Fine Arts Building to use the darkrooms and photography lab.

FLOWERS OF THE SUN Ages 7–12 with adult 6:30–8:30 p.m. | June 20 $40/$50 per adult/child pair Learn about the history and symbolism of sunflowers in Mexico and their inclusion in paintings by Diego Rivera. Create a three-dimensional sunflower in clay. Participants will glaze and leave their work to be fired. Finished pieces will be available for pick-up beginning July 13.

Join Mexican artist and writer Maria Vasquez Boyd to experience the creativity, imagery, discipline and inspiration of artists in the Masterpieces of Modern Mexico exhibition. Explore the art of Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Carlos Merida, as well as others, and be creative working with a variety of media.
Explore the process of photographing flowers— creativity in approach, techniques, natural lighting, composition, backgrounds and lens. Friday class meets at the Nelson-Atkins to visit the galleries, see how artists have drawn upon flowers for inspiration and view instructor’s photos with flowers. Class continues Saturday morning at the beautiful Kauffman Gardens, located one block south of the museum to photograph. Return to the museum for lunch and discussion of images created. Please prepare your equipment for the day by charging camera batteries, cleaning lenses and bringing adequate memory cards. Bring your camera manual and, if possible, a tripod.
