Impressionist France: Visions of Nation from Le Gray to Monet October 19, 2013–February 9, 2014 | Galleries L13–14 Experience the pleasure and excitement of traveling through mid-19th century France. About Face: Contemporary Portraiture Through January 19, 2014 | Gallery L11 This exhibition explores the global diversity of contemporary photographic portraiture since 2000, and includes works by 29 internationally acclaimed artists. The Naked and the Nude: Representations of the Body Through February 16, 2014 | Gallery P27 Whether exposed and vulnerable or comfortable and at ease, the human body has always been a favored subject of artists. This exhibition explores differing representations of the body in 19th- and 20thcentury prints and drawings, from the ideal, classically-inspired nude of the 1800s to the increasingly abstract, expressive unclothed figures of the Modern period. FALL SESSION OF STUDIO CLASSES FOR AGES 3–ADULT The world-class collection of the Nelson-Atkins’ is the inspiration for our studio programs. Direct experience with art in the galleries provides students with a foundation for art making in the Ford Learning Center classrooms. Experience a unique learning environment for children and adults unlike any other in Kansas City!

ENROLLMENT Enroll today online (nelson-atkins.org/calendar), or by phone 816.751.1ART (1278), option 2. Enrollment is on a first-call, firstserved basis. Credit/debit card payment required. Cost: Museum members receive discount on classes, 30% for Society of Fellows and 20% for Friends of Art. The discounted member prices are listed in that order with the public price last. Please provide the following information when you call: Student’s name, address, date of birth, home phone, emergency phone and the parent/guardian name. We accept individual enrollments only; one person may not enroll students from multiple families. Enroll early—class size is limited. Enrollment deadline is three days prior to a class or workshop. Classes that do not reach a minimum enrollment will be cancelled and fees refunded. Parking for museum members is FREE; nonmembers parking for more than 30 minutes, either to attend class or wait while their student is in class, will pay $5 per vehicle. Cancellations/Transfer Credits: Students can cancel an enrollment five business days prior to a class or one-time workshop to receive a refund less a $15 cancellation fee per enrollment. Transfers from one class to another can be up until five business days prior to a class with a $10 transfer fee. No refunds or transfers will be made for cancellations made less than five business days prior or due to missing a class. BRUSH UP ON PAINTING Ages 9–13 | 1:30–3:30 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 21–Nov. 2 No class Oct. 19 $84/$96/$120 Explore the process of painting, brushstroke, color mixing, space, composition and more as you work with tempera, acrylics and watercolor. Ideas will come from real objects, art in the galleries and the imagination.

The iPhone is a powerful tool for documenting your life and making creative images. We will cover the basics of taking photographs, various apps and creative possibilities to enhance images. Participants need an iPhone and iTunes account to access apps, some free and some available for a small charge. The innovation of photography in the 1800s will be compared to today’s tools.

See gorgeous Islamic patterns in the exhibition Echoes: Islamic Art and Contemporary Artists and create a clay platter decorated with a repeat design all your own. Participants will glaze and leave their work to be fired. Finished pieces will be available for pick-up beginning Oct. 12.

Visit the upcoming exhibition Impressionist France: Visions of Nation from Le Gray to Monet to discuss how artists create landscapes and use expressive brushstrokes to make mono prints of your own landscape setting.

WET COLLODION PHOTOGRAPHY 10 a.m.–Noon, Saturday, Nov. 2 and 10 a.m.– 2 p.m., Saturdays, Nov. 9 & 16 $140/$160/$200 Instructor: Steve Wilson Hallmark photographer Explore the history and basics of wet collodion photography, more commonly used from 1850–1870. Examples of this innovative process are on view in the exhibition Impressionist France. Class meets at the Nelson-Atkins Nov. 2 and at the UMKC Fine Arts Building Nov. 9 & 16.
