Welcome To ShuttleCork 2017 Dear Friend, Within just five short years, ShuttleCork has become an exhilarating signature event that is one of Kansas City’s premier fundraisers. I am delighted to welcome you to the this year’s ShuttleCork – your chance to experience fine wine and exceptional cuisine while supporting the growth of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. In this current season of celebration at the museum, I am struck by what can be accomplished by determined people who are driven by what can be. This was recently illustrated by the opening of the beautiful new Bloch Galleries. Henry and Marion Bloch inspired us with their years of tenacity in building a private collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. The Nelson-Atkins was the grateful recipient of the Bloch Collection, which required a thoughtful vision of what the museum’s European galleries could become. After more than three years of planning and construction, with more than 100 companies involved, the project opened to the public March 11. How wonderful to see thousands of visitors wander through, free of charge, marveling at this gift to Kansas City. This year we also celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the opening of the Bloch Building. That too was the result of a group of determined people with vision who could imagine a new campus and a new future for the museum. I am grateful that they can see the results of their work – a dynamic building that welcomes more than 520,000 people a year to lively events and exhibitions. ShuttleCork has performed in the same way – an event that has been built by an energetic group of determined and generous people. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank co-chairs Mary Bloch and Paul DeBruce and all the committee members and volunteers who have worked so hard on this event. In the same way that we cannot imagine the Nelson-Atkins without the Bloch Building and now the Bloch Galleries, we cannot imagine the museum without ShuttleCork. Raise your paddles high and pave the path to more success! ¡Salud!

Meet The Auctioneer Greg Quiorga
We welcome back Greg Quiroga as our auctioneer for a stellar second year! Based in San Francisco, Greg conducts fundraising auctions for non-profit organizations all over the country. His clients include some of the top travel-destination wine auctions in the United States, including the Sun Valley Center for the Arts Wine Auction, the Manhattan Wine Auction, the Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta, Vintage Albuquerque, and the Howell Mountain Vintners & Growers Association. His performances are always a fiery combination of passion, humor, and heartfelt engagement. His favorite part of every auction is that moment when the crowd comes together to help change the world through the Fund-a-Need. He also enjoys “encouraging bidders to spend more than they should on things they don’t need in support of a great cause,” and always manages to make people feel good about doing exactly that. Greg and his wife live in San Francisco with their son, Ryder, and their Australian Shepherd, Loki.

Conditions Of Purchase pricing The dollar figures shown on almost all lots are sometimes an educated guess, sometimes based on commercial auctions. In almost every instance where donors or wineries have indicated values or retail prices, the dollar figure shown by the lot is lower; in other words, more often than not, our estimates are a bargain. Bidding may begin below, and the final bid may be less than, but we hope will be considerably above the stated figure. auction procedures 1. Neither the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction nor Greg Quiroga [“The Auctioneer”] are responsible for the accuracy of the descriptions of auction lots contained in the catalogue. The descriptions incorporate, in some instances, materials or descriptions furnished by donors. In particular, prospective bidders should inspect wines prior to bidding and make their own judgment with reference to the quality and value of such wines. 2. Any trips or events comprising all or part of an auction lot shall, unless otherwise specified in the catalogue description, be subject to convenient scheduling by the lot donors and the successful bidder. In addition, unless otherwise specified, purchasers of events are expected to schedule the event to occur within twelve months of the Auction. Attention: Some trips and events are date specific and cannot be rescheduled. Purchasers may not transfer or resell events or trip lots. 3. All wine is sold on an “as-is” basis, and neither the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction nor The Auctioneer make any express or implied warranty or representation of any kind or nature with respect to any property included in an auction lot. 4. The Auctioneer shall have the absolute right to withdraw any auction lot, reject any auction bid, resolve any dispute with reference to any auction lot or any bid on any auction lot at any time before the fall of the hammer. No bid is valid unless acknowledged as such by The Auctioneer. 5. All wines sold at the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction are subject to the provisions of Missouri law and the regulations of the Missouri Department of Revenue. 6. Any property may be withdrawn by The Auctioneer or the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction at any time before the actual sale without any liability therefore. 7. The Auctioneer and the Nelson Gallery Foundation Wine Auction reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by The Auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, The Auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder and resell the item in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction’s records shall be conclusive in all respects.

1985-A Vintage For The Ages Thirty two years later, 1985 continues to stand tall in the world of wine. Typically, great vintages tend to be specific to individual wine regions. This auction lot features wines from six different Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) and includes two great first-growth wines of Bordeaux—Château Margaux and Chateau Lafite. Fund-A-Need Last year on a special night in April, children brought their families on a field trip to see The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. One boy led his parents into Bloch Lobby and ran down the ramp, saying, “I love this museum! This is MY museum!” There could be no better sign that the Education Department is doing powerful work. Each year, the museum works with more than 66,500 students from nearly 500 schools in the Kansas City metropolitan area. About 80 percent of those schools serve economically disadvantaged children, who might not otherwise have the experience of visiting the museum. Your support of Fund-a-Need will help pay for field trip expenses, such as buses and substitute teachers. Through a program called Thinking Through Art, students spend time with works of art and talk about what they see. They notice details, offer possibilities, and take part in critical thinking. What they say matters. They are learning that at the Nelson-Atkins the life experience they bring to looking at art is important, and their words are respected. At District Family Night, they share their “expertise” with their families. Imagine how powerful it is for parents who have not visited the museum to have their children as their guides. Your support of Fund-a-Need will help bring down barriers in Kansas City. The Education Department is making enormous strides in reaching out to the community in diverse ways. Staff members take art to immigrant populations, to underserved preschools and after-school programs, and to the Kansas School of the Blind. Deaf Culture Day is now an annual celebration. On weekends, families are invited to drop in at the museum for art activities, and more than 13,000 children and adults take part each year. Your support of Fund-a-Need will help all people know that they belong at the Nelson-Atkins. Last year a man from Tacoma happened to visit on District Family Night. He was so moved by what he saw that he took time to write to the Director: “This was the best visit to an art museum that I have ever had in my life. The building was buzzing with activity. The staff and volunteers spoke to the visitors with enthusiasm and met them at their level of interest and knowledge. I thought to myself that this experience was so welcoming and positive, it will encourage families to seek out other museums in the future and make this a part of their cultural lives.” Your support of Fund-a-Need will help change lives.
