ShuttleCork2018 Dear Friends, The exciting, two-night event that we know as ShuttleCork has a growing reputation for excellence. Guests know they will have access to exceptional winemakers and wines that are generally available only through connections or through exclusive mail lists. Likewise, visitors to The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art know that when they walk through the doors, they will encounter excellence. I watched our visitors be transformed after visiting Through the Eyes of Picasso, where they could see African masterworks side by side with Pablo Picasso’s paintings and sculpture. This fall, our visitors will experience another level of excellence with Napoleon: Power & Splendor, which will offer an intimate view of stunning objects from Napoleon’s household. Great exhibitions would not happen if not for our generous donors! The notion of excellence is the guiding principle behind ShuttleCork. The event is the creation of chairs Paul DeBruce and Mary Bloch, who brilliantly conceived of an event that would do two things: raise funds to support the Nelson-Atkins, and bring a new set of enthusiasts to the museum. The event has succeeded well beyond our expectations. In the years since it began, ShuttleCork has raised more than $4 million to benefit the Nelson-Atkins, and it is considered one of the top multi-day fundraising events in the city. Most importantly, it has welcomed new friends to the museum, not simply as guests, but as instant supporters of our institution. We welcome back Greg Quiroga as our auctioneer for a stellar third year! Based in San Francisco, Greg conducts fundraising auctions for non-profit organizations all over the country. His clients include some of the top travel-destination wine auctions in the United States, including the Sun Valley Center for the Arts Wine Auction, the Manhattan Wine Auction, the Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta, Vintage Albuquerque, and the Howell Mountain Vintners & Growers Association. His performances are always a fiery combination of passion, humor, and heartfelt engagement. His favorite part of every auction is that moment when the crowd comes together to help change the world through the Fund-a-Need. He also enjoys “encouraging bidders to spend more than they should on things they don’t need in support of a great cause,” and always manages to make people feel good about doing exactly that. Greg and his wife live in San Francisco with their son, Ryder, and their Australian Shepherd, Loki.

CONDITIONS OF PURCHASE pricing The dollar figures shown on almost all lots are sometimes an educated guess, sometimes based on commercial auctions. In almost every instance where donors or wineries have indicated values or retail prices, the dollar figure shown by the lot is lower; in other words, more often than not, our estimates are a bargain. Bidding may begin below, and the final bid may be less than, but we hope will be considerably above the stated figure. auction procedures 1. Neither the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction nor Greg Quiroga [“The Auctioneer”] are responsible for the accuracy of the descriptions of auction lots contained in the catalogue. The descriptions incorporate, in some instances, materials or descriptions furnished by donors. In particular, prospective bidders should inspect wines prior to bidding and make their own judgment with reference to the quality and value of such wines. 2. Any trips or events comprising all or part of an auction lot shall, unless otherwise specified in the catalogue description, be subject to convenient scheduling by the lot donors and the successful bidder. In addition, unless otherwise specified, purchasers of events are expected to schedule the event to occur within twelve months of the Auction. Attention: Some trips and events are date specific and cannot be rescheduled. Purchasers may not transfer or resell events or trip lots. 3. All wine is sold on an “as-is” basis, and neither the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction nor The Auctioneer make any express or implied warranty or representation of any kind or nature with respect to any property included in an auction lot. 4. The Auctioneer shall have the absolute right to withdraw any auction lot, reject any auction bid, resolve any dispute with reference to any auction lot or any bid on any auction lot at any time before the fall of the hammer. No bid is valid unless acknowledged as such by The Auctioneer. 5. All wines sold at the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction are subject to the provisions of Missouri law and the regulations of the Missouri Department of Revenue. 6. Any property may be withdrawn by The Auctioneer or the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction at any time before the actual sale without any liability therefore. 7. The Auctioneer and the Nelson Gallery Foundation Wine Auction reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by The Auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, The Auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder and resell the item in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction’s records shall be conclusive in all respects.

ta x a p p l i c a b i l i t y Purchasers shall be required to pay all state and local retail sales taxes applicable on the date of sale. As a general rule, the Missouri sales tax shall apply to the full purchase price of all items included in auction lots but not to prices paid for trips or private events. All payments for auction lots shall be made to the Nelson Gallery Foundation. The Nelson Gallery Foundation is classified as a taxexempt corporation under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). Bidders may be entitled to deduct a portion of their payments for auction lots as a charitable contribution, but each bidder should consult her or his attorney or tax advisor regarding such deductibility for state or federal income tax purposes. The Nelson Gallery Foundation will provide documentation as required by law following the auction. pay m e n t a n d p i c k u p 1. Payment for all auction lots Friday, May 4, shall be made within one hour following the conclusion of the Live Auction. 2. Full payment must be made prior to removal of any auction lot. 3. All payments must be made by cashier’s or certified check, or by Visa, MasterCard or American Express. Company or personal checks will be accepted only upon submittal of identification and credit responsibility satisfactory to the representative of the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction responsible for accepting payment. 4. Payment for separate lots under one bidder number may be combined. 5. Wines offered by a winery for future bottling must be paid for just as other lots. Arrangements for bottling and for delivery of such wines, including payment of applicable Missouri alcohol taxes, shall be the responsibility of the bidder.

04 WINE LOT: Bordeaux First Growths
At the 1855 Exposition Universelle de Paris, the top wines of Bordeaux (left bank) were assigned quality classifications still carefully followed by wine collectors to this day. Only four wines were designated “first growth”— Chateau Haut-Brion, Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Latour, and Chateau Margaux. A fifth, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, was elevated in 1973. An outstanding selection of each of these wines is included in this lot, together with a bottle of Chateau Cheval Blanc, a celebrated first Right Bank first-growth producer (right bank properties were classified in 1955). These chateaux continue to set the benchmark globally for prestigious wine. 07 Harlan Wine Dinner in the Cloister Ten couples will enjoy dinner prepared by celebrity chef Graham Elliot, in one of the Nelson-Atkins’ most revered galleries, the 14th century French Cloister, paired with exquisite wines from Napa’s Harlan Estate. According to wine critic Robert Parker, “Harlan Estate might be the single most profound red wine made not just in California, but in the world.” Friend of ShuttleCork Don Weaver, Director of Harlan, will be on hand to pour these special wines. Elliot, who also is a restaurateur and television personality, is one of the most recognized faces cooking in America today. At age 27, Graham became the youngest four-star chef in any major U.S. city and was named one of Food & Wine magazine’s “Best New Chefs” in 2004. In May of 2008, he opened his eponymous restaurant, Graham Elliot, which went on to become one of only 15 restaurants in the U.S. to be awarded two Michelin stars. Graham also has received multiple James Beard Foundation nominations. After 10 seasons with the MasterChef and the MasterChef Jr. franchise, Chef Elliot joined Bravo’s Emmy award-winning cooking competition Top Chef as a full-time judge. 11 2018 Fund-A-Need Program Walk into The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art any given day, and you will feel the difference. You will hear children in the galleries and in the studios, making art and exploring materials. You will hear languages from around the world, and you will see people participating in an American Sign Language tour of the collection. You will see teenagers expressing themselves through art, finding where they belong in the museum world, and you will see young adults dancing at the museum’s dynamic Third Thursday events. You will smell the coffee brewing in the new Quay Coffee space in the Bloch Building, and you will see college students working on their laptops near great works of art. You also will see children who have been to the museum on field trips, returning to proudly show their families through the galleries. Support Fund-a-Need to bring down barriers! The Nelson-Atkins offers the full experience of the museum so that all visitors feel welcome and respected. This includes the annual Deaf Culture Day, a Minds in Motion tour for those with memory loss, and activities for visitors who are blind or have low vision. Recently the museum’s Education Department worked with the Johnson County Developmental Services Emerging Artists Program, a group of neurodiverse adults with a strong interest in the arts. The response: “Wow, what a great experience for our artists. This is how they want to experience the Nelson-Atkins from now on!” Help create access for all! Each year, the museum engages with nearly 53,000 students in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Your support of Fund-a-Need helps pay for field trip expenses, such as buses and substitute teachers, as well as art materials and high-quality instruction. The Thinking Through Art program takes the power of art to area schools, connecting with more than 6,700 children, who experience 12 visits in the classroom and two visits to the Nelson-Atkins. The cost: about $16 per student. Your paddle raise of $250 helps give 15 children an in-depth experience. More than 31,000 students tour the Nelson-Atkins each year. More than 8,000 come from schools with high percentages of low-income families. The cost: about $8 per student. Your paddle raise of $500 helps bring more than 60 children to the museum. The Nelson-Atkins offers workshops to more than 15,000 students, with time in the galleries and hands-on art making in the studio. 12 WINE LOT: Schrader and Friends
Schrader and Friends – the wines of Thomas Rivers Brown. Two years after moving to Napa Valley in 1996, Thomas Brown was named winemaker at two new wineries – Schrader Cellars and Outpost. Those wines rapidly drew passionate followings, propelling Brown to success that has been both meteoric and consistent. Today he is consulting winemaker at more than 40 wineries, and his wines generate scores among the highest in California. More than two dozen of his wines have been deemed worthy of perfect 100 scores from Robert Parker. In addition to the wines of Schrader and Outpost, this lot features a sampling of Brown’s masterful work from three other coveted California wineries.
