On behalf of the Athletic Department at Northeast Mississippi Community College, I want to welcome you to this athletic event. We hope that your visit today will create an interest that will encourage you to come back. As we strive for excellence in the classroom and in the athletic arena, we would like to encourage every one of you to become involved in all aspects of our athletic department. As we try to reach the highest level with all of our sports programs we must continue to work very hard to be the very best we can be. We are looking for all avenues of resources to build on our already competitive programs. Within the last five (5) years, we have steadily improved every one of our athletic teams. We now have great leadership in all of our athletic programs and we are very excited about what the future holds for all of them. We would like to invite you to become a part of our Athletic booster club and help us as we strive to reach the highest level. Athletic Director David Robbins

David Robbins When David Robbins accepted the position of head men’s basketball coach at Northeast in the spring of 2005, he enthusiastically accepted the challenge of returning the tradition-rich program to a place of prominence in the state and nation. With an emphasis on doing things the right way on and off the floor, the Tigers (15-9) recorded their first winning season since the 1999-2000 season. After stumbling in 2006-07 with nine freshmen and only four sophomores on the court, Robbins and company burst onto the MACJC scene in 2007-08. The Tigers went 15-10, 7-5 during the regular season and captured a runner-up finish in the MACJC North Division. After making semifinal runs in the State and Region 23 tournament, Robbins led the 2008-09 Tiger basketball team to a 1213 record, and the 2009-10 team to a 1211, 7-5 record. On the hardwood in 2010-11, David Robbins led the Tiger basketball team to appearances in the MACJC State Tournament and the NJCAA Region XXIII Tournament after finishing as the North Division runner-up with a 7-5 mark in the North Division and an 11-14 mark overall. The Tigers found the same opponent awaiting them in both the state and region tournaments – 19th-ranked Pearl River Community College – and the Tigers gave the Wildcats a run in the state tournament before falling in overtime 92-83. Robbins’ team reached the national rankings during the 2012-13 season as the Tigers started the season strong and posted a 7-1 mark at the Christmas holiday break and carried a 10-2 overall record into the

January 18, 2012 NJCAA Top 20 poll where the Tigers were ranked thirteenth in the nation. Northeast continued to build on its early success and finished the year with a 14-9 mark and tied for fourth in the North Division but lost out on a tiebreaker with Itawamba for a spot in the MACJC State Basketball Tournament. However, the Tigers did have three players selected to the MACJC All-State team with Acie Vance (Ripley), Lavon Hooks (Atlanta, Georgia) and Jermaine Hollimon (Memphis, Tenn.) all being selected for postseason accolades. Vance was the North Division’s leading scorer with 16.9 points per game and finished second in the MACJC while Hooks led the North Division and the MACJC with 8.6 rebounds per game. Hollimon and Cedric Janes of Dyersburg, Tenn., were also selected to play in the MACJC North-South All-Star game in Decatur. Before returning to his alma mater, Robbins spent 14 seasons as head boy’s basketball coach at Corinth High school. During that time, Robbins led the Warriors to a 310-147 overall record, including four 30-win seasons, eight 20-win seasons, nine Alcorn County championships (seven straight from ‘99-’05), three North Half titles and three State Championship trophies. Robbins’ teams appeared in five State Tournaments and eight North Half Tournaments en route to a 44-15 record in post season play, a .745 winning percentage. In only his second season at CHS, Robbins guided the Warriors to the State

Championship and a 36-5 overall mark, a school record for wins in a season. He became the winningest coach in Warrior history with win number 267 in 2003 and picked up win number 300 with a 50-46 victory over Ripley on Jan. 11, 2005 Robbins was named the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2003, and was selected to coach in the 2002 North/South All-Star Game. Initially, Robbins also served as a physical education instructor, but left the classroom to become athletic director in 2002. As AD, Robbins supervised every aspect of the athletic programs at Corinth High and Junior High Schools. A Tippah County native, Blue Mountain High School graduate and former basketball player and team captain at Northeast Mississippi Junior College, Robbins worked at Northeast, assisting both former men’s basketball coach Harvey Childers and women’s basketball coach Ricky Ford (1987-89). His duties included on-the-floor coaching and recruiting in-district as well as outof-state players. Robbins also worked as an assistant director of student activities at Northeast (1987-1991). Robbins earned an Associate in Arts Degree from Northeast in 1985, a Bachelor of Science degree from Millsaps College in 1987 and a master’s degree from Mississippi College in 1989. Robbins played two seasons for the Millsaps Majors and was selected the 1987 team captain. David and his wife Pam have three children, Brandon, Mary Beth, and Brody.

Head Coach Ricky Smither

Ricky Smither Northeast head football coach Ricky Smither returns for his sixth year at the helm of the Tiger football program entering into the 2013 season. Smither had a year of rebuilding year in 2012 where the Tigers went 3-6 overall. His journey as commander-in-chief for NEMCC first presented itself on July 3, 2008 when he became the 13th head football coach in school history. In his first year as head coach Smither’s overall record was 1-8. However, he was able to improve to 2-6 overall in 2009 with three of the six losses going into extra periods. One of the biggest wins for Smither since becoming the go-to-guy at NEMCC came in a 28-21 victory over the Tigers arch rival Itawamba Community College in September of 2009. However, in 2010, Smither proved that he was the man for the job as his program continued to get better. The Tigers posted their twelfth winning season in the college’s 51-year football history when Smither’s troops finished with a 5-4 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division. Smither helped Northeast garnered national attention during week six of the season after the Tigers were able to knock off defending MACJC State Champion East Mississippi 4942 in a shootout in Scooba where Tiger running back Jaquise Cook (Ripley) Ran for 267 yards and four scores against the Lions. Cook was awarded the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Player of the Week honors following his week six performance. In addition to posting the team’s first winning season since 2005, under the direction of Smither, the Tiger football team also captured 8

the attention of the national media when Northeast was included in the NJCAA National Top 20 Football Poll for the week of October 19, 2010 at No. 18 after the Tigers opened up the season 5-2. The Tigers missed the playoffs due to MACJC tiebreaker rules, but Smither led Northeast past that threshold one year later. Northeast finished the 2011 regular season campaign at 6-3 and clinched a postseason berth for the first time since 2005. Their 4-2 mark in division play for the second year in a row would place them as the North runner-up, behind eventual NJCAA National Champion East Mississippi Community College. In the MACJC Semifinals, the Tigers took South Division champion Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to overtime before falling short of advancing by a field goal. Smither began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Delta State University in 1995, later accepting a coaching position at Cleveland (Miss.) High School in 1997. He made the move to community college coaching in 1998, joining the staff at Coahoma Community College. From 1999-2006, Smither enjoyed stints at East Side High School (Miss.), H.L. Bourgeois High School (Louisiana), while also working at the Division-I level as an assistant coach at Mississippi Valley State University (2002-04). Smither came on board at Northeast as an

assistant football coach, focusing on the offensive line, in February of 2007, just over a year before accepting the job as the Tigers head coach. Smither enjoyed success as the Tigers’ offensive line coach in his first season at NEMCC. His first o-line group sported two four-year college signees: Reggie Wade (Jacksonville State University) and Greg Magnifico (Belhaven University). Since becoming the head coach, Smither has continued to help his sophomores move their gridiron careers on to four year universities. Some of his most recent players to move on, after the 2009-10 campaigns, were standouts like defensive tackle John Brown, who signed with the University of Tenneesee, and safety LaDarrius Madden along with offensive lineman DeMarkus Underwood who both signed to play for Troy University, while another safety John Ware inked with the University of North Alabama, wide receiver Josh Jarboe signed with Arkansas State, cornerback Deion Belue signed with the University of Alabama, tight end Logan Stokes inked with LSU, defensive tackle Lavon Hooks signed with Ole Miss, and running back Jay Jones inked with South Alabama. Smither graduated from Delta State University with a Master’s Degree in Education. He and his wife Lynn have two children; Russ and Kaitlyn.

Defensive Coordinator Travis Macon

Travis Macon A former Northeast football player, coach Travis Macon enters his second season as defensive coordinator for the Tigers. He assumed the duties during the 2012 season after the departure of Jeff Carter. In 2011, Macon coached the defensive line and helped lead NEMCC into the postseason for the first time in six years. After coaching the offensive line in 2008, Macon moved over the defensive side of the ball in 2009 and has worked with the defense since that time. This will be Maconâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third season as a fulltime coach after being promoted over the summer of 2011. Macon, a native of Starkville, Miss., and graduate of Starkville High School, played football under the direction of head coach Chuck Fran during his time at SHS. During his high school career, Macon helped the Yellowjackets win back-to-back state titles from 1995-97. After graduating high school, Macon moved on to Northeast Mississippi Community College as a student-athlete where he played football for head coach Laurin Collins from 1998-99. Macon then transferred to the University of Mississippi where he played offensive tackle for the Rebels from 2000-02 for head coach David Cutcliff. Macon helped the Rebels to an appearance in the Music City Bowl in 2000. After his playing career at Ole Miss, Macon eventually decided to begin his coaching career at Northeast in the fall of 2008. During his first year as a student-assistant, Macon coached the offensive line that sent two offensive linemen to four-year institutions, Daryl Petty (Northwestern Oklahoma State University) and Heath Blount (University of South Alabama). Macon is married to Deimara and they have three children - Haleih, Brian and Ambrielle.

Defensive Line Coach Greg Davis

Greg Davis A veteran of the coaching fraternity, Greg Davis enters into his second year as a member of the Tigers staff for the 2013 season. He will transition from one side of the football to the other this year and serve as defensive line coach. Davis made his way to Booneville in 2012 after serving as an assistant for the Kentucky State Thorobreds for two seasons. As the assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the Thorobreds, Davis helped lead a pair of Kentucky State University running backs to 1,000-yard seasons in 2009. Before joining the Kentucky State staff, Davis was a member of the Sul Ross State Univeristy football staff in Texas where he served not only as the Lobos offensive line coach but as their offensive coordinator as well. Prior to his stint with the Lobos, Davis spent a pair of seasons at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas as the Reddies offensive line coach and run-game coordinator. It was during his time as the Reddies’ offensive line coach and run-game coordinator that Davis made a name for himself. During his tenure as a coach at Henderson State, Davis had four lineman selected to the NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Team and three linemen picked for the All-Gulf South Conference Team. In 2007, Davis coached Kurt Kutscher who was a finalist for the Gene Upshaw Award, which is awarded to Division II’s best offensive lineman. Davis also had the pleasure of coaching an All-American lineman while serving as a Reddie coach. During both the 2004 and 2005 seasons, Davis found himself at Upper Iowa University and before that he was the offensive line coach 10

and strength coordinator at Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Davis began his coaching career at Stephen F. Austin State University before moving to Independence Community College as the Pirates assistant head coach, run game coordinator and offensive line coach. Before joining the coaching ranks in the early 2000s, Davis found himself playing professional football first with the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL) in 1999 as a member of the Giants training camp and then as a member of the Arena Football League’s (AFL) Houston Thunder Bears. Davis completed a Bachelor’s of Science degree in psychology from Texas Christian Uni-

versity where he was a member of the Horned Frogs football team from 1994-98. During his time with the TCU football team, Davis participated in both the Independence and Sun bowls and was named to the 1998 All-Sun Bowl Team. While at Stephen F. Austin State University, Davis completed a Master of Science in family and consumer sciences degree. The Kingsville, Texas, native received a huge honor this past summer when he was selected to be one of five guest coaches for the Canadian Football League (CFL) member Saskatchewan Roughriders training camp at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. Davis is married to Karri and has two sons - Reed and Rece.

Defensive Backs Coach Jonathan Webster

Jonathan Webster Jonathan Webster is a product of the Mississippi junior college system and took over the role of defensive backs coach for the Tigers in 2012. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have the same responsibilities this season of coaching the talented backfield at Northeast. Webster, who played for Northwest Mississippi Community College, spent three years at Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit before making the trek to Booneville. During his time in Summit, Webster served under Bear head coach Charles Anthony but it was as a Wonder Boy at Arkansas Tech University where the Batesville native made a name for himself. Webster not only set records on the field for the Wonder Boys but the Mississippi native also focused his concentration in the classroom and was twice named to the ESPN The Magazine/ College Sports Information Directors Association (Co-SIDA) Academic All-District VI team. Webster became just the twenty-seventh (27th) Wonder Boy to garner such an honor and led the Arkansas Tech defense while compiling a 3.27 cumulative grade point average (GPA) in sociology. During his two years as a Wonder Boy safety, 2006 and 2007, Webster was able to rack up 126 tackles, two interceptions and five pass break-ups. In his final campaign with Arkansas Tech, Webster recorded 79 tackles during the 2007 season â&#x20AC;&#x201C; second-most on the team. In his freshman year, Webster appeared in all 10 games for Arkansas Tech while making four stops and finished with 47 tackles (fourth on the team) including 23 solo stops, 1.5 tackles

for loss, one interception and three pass breakups. Webster was also named the Wonder Boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; defensive MVP for a 55-35 win over Ouachita Baptist when he recorded 10 tackles, an interception and pass break-up against the Tigers. While a player at Northwest, Webster helped lead the Ranger defense to national rankings. In the 2004 season, the Ranger defense ranked in the top 10 in the country by only allowing 212 yards of total defense and were second in pass defense by surrendering 91.9 yards

per game. Webster recorded over 70 tackles his sophomore year while holding the opposition to just 15.1 points per game. Webster and the Rangers also averaged four sacks a contest during his sophomore season. In his freshman year, Webster helped the Rangers rank fourth in the nation in rushing defense by allowing just 71.6 yards per game, fourteenth in the nation in total defense (237.2 yards/contest) and twenty-seventh overall in passing defense with 165.6 yards per outing.

Receivers Coach Dustin Jones

Dustin Jones Dustin Jones enters his first season of coaching at the collegiate level during the 2013 campaign at Northeast. Jones brings the passion and dedication of the United States armed forces with him to the football field. He served our country in the Army beginning in 1999 as a cavalry scout and retired as a non-commissioned officer in 2007. While on active duty, he was stationed in Georgia, Hawaii, and Kentucky. His squadron was a part of multiple overseas engagements, including Operations Noble Eagle, Desert Spring (Kuwait), Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan). He also worked as a tactical instructor for basic combat training and advanced individual training. The Army has decorated Jones for his time spent in service to this nation. He has received four Achievement Medals, four Accommodation Medals, two Accommodation Medals with Valor, a Bronze Star Medal and a Community Service Award. Jones began his coaching career at Tishomingo County High School in 2011, where he spent time as an assistant on both sides of the football for two years. He held the titles of co-offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator in his time with the Braves. He also spent time specifically training and developing Tishomingo Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quarterbacks, receivers, defensive backs and defensive ends. Northeast head coach Ricky Smither added Jones to his coaching staff in the spring of 2013 to assist him on offense as wide receivers coach. Jones will also focus on game and practice film break down, plus the recruitment of future 12

Tigers. After honorably leaving the Army, the Fulton native returned to school and attained an Associate of Arts degree at Itawamba Community College in 2010. Earlier this year, Jones completed his Bach-

elor of Science degree through Liberty University and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in sports administration at the same institution. Jones is a graduate of Mantachie High School and has one daughter, Grace.

Offensive Line Coach Mike Markuson

Mike Markuson Mike Markuson enters his first season as an assistant football coach under Northeast Mississippi Community College head man Ricky Smither in 2013 and will bring his expertise to the Tiger offensive line. During the 2012 season, Markuson was the oline coach at the University of Wisconsin and prior to Markuson’s stop in Madison, the veteran coach had spent the last 14 years in the SEC, coaching the offensive lines at Arkansas and Ole Miss. Since 2003, six different Markuson disciples have earned All-America honors. The most well-known of those players is Michael Oher, the subject of the movie “Blind Side,” who was a first-team All-American and a first-round draft choice of the Baltimore Ravens in 2009. Markuson has also tutored 2007 Rimington Trophy winner Jonathan Luigs and two-time firstteam All-American and 2004 first-round NFL draft pick Shawn Andrews. Both at Ole Miss and Arkansas, Markuson has helped develop potent run games. In Markuson’s decade at Arkansas, no other Southeastern Conference team was more effective at running the ball than the Razorbacks. In 2003, Markuson added the duty of running game coordinator, and the Hogs topped the SEC in rushing in four of the five campaigns under his watch. The 2006 and 2007 seasons saw the Razorbacks lead the SEC and rank fourth in the nation in rushing offense. Arkansas boasted one of the best rushing duos in the country in that time as Darren McFadden and Felix Jones each rushed for over 1,000 yards in both seasons. McFadden won the Doak Walker Award both years and was a two-time runner-up in the Heisman Trophy balloting. He and Jones were both first-round picks in the NFL draft. Not only did Markuson’s offensive line create lanes for the Razorback running game, it also kept defenders away from the Hog quarterbacks. Arkansas finished the season fifth nationally in 2007, allowing only 13 sacks, after ranking second in the country (0.64 per game) in 2006. That success carried over to Ole Miss. In 2008, the Rebels recorded their most rushing yards since

1990 and ranked second in the conference after ranking 11th just one year prior. The following season, RB Dexter McCluster had a record-breaking year running behind Markuson’s line, posting the second-highest rushing total in school history with 1,169 yards and earning first-team All-America honors. Also serving as the co-offensive coordinator, Markuson’s most impressive coaching job might have come in 2010. With seven underclassmen earning starts on the offensive line and using six different starting lineups, Ole Miss topped the SEC in fewest sacks allowed and notched eight 100-yard rushing games between four different runners. Markuson’s line ranked second in the SEC (14th in the nation) in fewest sacks allowed in 2009 (17) and was fourth in the conference in 2008 (20), after Ole Miss finished ninth the previous year. Markuson tutored a pair of first-team All-Americans at Ole Miss in Oher (2008) and guard John Jerry in 2009. Oher became the fifth Rebel to win the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, as the SEC’s best blocker, and was taken with the 23rd overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. Jerry was taken in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. Under Markuson’s tutelage at Arkansas, Luigs captured the 2007 Rimington Trophy, awarded to the outstanding center in college football, and was named a first-team All-American by The Sporting News and Rivals.com. Luigs also earned a share of the Jacobs Trophy. Luigs and guard Robert Felton were named to the Coaches All-SEC first team in 2007. Felton also earned second-team All-America honors from Rivals. com. Arkansas featured three first-team All-SEC performers on the offensive line in 2006 (Luigs, Tony Ugoh and Zac Tubbs). A second-round pick in the 2007 NFL draft, Ugoh was distinguished as a secondteam All-American by CollegeFootballNews.com. The 2003 Arkansas rushing attack ranked fifth nationally, and Andrews was an All-American tackle and an Outland and Lombardi Trophy finalist. He was chosen 16th overall in the 2004 NFL Draft by the

Philadelphia Eagles. A native of Farmington, Minn., Markuson began his coaching career at Farmington High School - his prep alma mater - as the school’s defensive line coach in 1983. He began his collegiate coaching career in 1984 with a two-year stint as the defensive line coach at South Dakota State, where he earned his master’s in physical education in 1986. After spending the 1986 season as the defensive line coach at his collegiate alma mater - Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. - Markuson began a twoyear graduate assistantship at Oklahoma State. While in Stillwater, he helped the Cowboys to a 35-33 win over West Virginia in the 1987 Sun Bowl and a 62-14 win over Wyoming in the 1988 Holiday Bowl behind five touchdowns and 222 rushing yards by Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders. In 1989, Markuson served as a graduate assistant at Notre Dame under head coach Lou Holtz. That Fighting Irish team posted a 12-1 record and finished No. 2 in the final Associated Press rankings after toppling Colorado in the Orange Bowl. Wisconsin Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez was the defensive coordinator on that team. Markuson landed his first full-time collegiate coaching position in 1990 when he was named the offensive line coach at Austin Peay. He then worked two years at Alabama A&M, coaching the offensive line in 1991 and serving as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 1992. From 1993-96, Markuson coached the offensive line at Murray State before moving on with head coach Houston Nutt to Boise State and serving as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator in 1997. Markuson was a three-year football letterman at Farmington High School where he served as team co-captain and earned all-conference honors as a senior. He went on to Hamline where he was a four-year starter at defensive tackle and a two-time honorable mention All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection for the Pipers. He was also team cocaptain as a senior.

Athletic Trainer Hope Barnes

A north Mississippi native enters her second year as Northeast Mississippi Community College’s athletic trainer in the 2013-14 academic year. Hope Barnes, a native of Nettleton, agreed to become Northeast’s head athletic trainer in August 2012. Barnes graduated from Nettleton High School in May 2009 and was a member of both the Lady Tiger cheerleading squad and powerlifting team, which helped set the stage for the Lady Tigers Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) powerlifting state championship just a year later. After her varsity career, Barnes carried her talents to the University of Southern Mississippi where she helped with various Golden Eagle and Lady Eagle sports including the successful USM football team. Before moving to Hattiesburg, Barnes was also awarded the Haskell Scholarship, which was named by Amory native and Hollywood veteran Sam Haskell for his mother and is

given to a senior at each of the Monroe County schools plus selected seniors at Amory High School. The Haskell Foundation chooses Haskell Scholarship recipients and awards are based upon student achievement, academics, activities and other criteria. At Nettleton High School, Barnes

was also a part of the nurse mentorship academy that partnered with the North Mississippi Medical Center to train certified nursing assistants (CNAs). While at the University of Southern Mississippi, Barnes carried on her high academic standards and finished her degree in three years including all prerequisite work while splitting time with the Golden Eagle and Lady Eagle sports along with Oak Grove High School. In May 2012, Barnes graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Athletic Training. At the USM, Barnes was a member of various clubs and organizations including Eagles for Life, the Legacy and the Student Sports Medicine Association. Even after graduation, Barnes was instrumental in helping high school athletes by serving as one of the athletic trainers for the youth football camps at Southern Mississippi.

Cheerleading Coach Karri Davis

Karri Davis returns for her second season as the Northeast Mississippi Community College cheerleading coach as the start of the 2013-14 academic year. After taking over mid-year during the 2012-13 season, Davis looks forward to a full year with the cheerleading team. Davis came to Northeast as a seasoned veteran in athletics and the Booneville resident looks forward to expanding the talents of the 12-member squad. Prior to coming to Northeast, Davis accumulated over 13 years of experience in both the higher education and state government. 14

sense approach to the Northeast cheerleading club but looks forward to applying her business background to fostering a learning environment between the squad members. Davis plans on making the cheerleading team more visible throughout the Booneville and Prentiss County communities. Davis is married to Tiger assistant Karri Davis

Sports Information Director Blake Long

One of northeast Mississippi’s native sons has returned to the area to take over the role of Assistant Public Information Officer and Sports Information Director at Northeast Mississippi Community College. Blake Long, a native of Tishomingo County, accepted the position in August 2013 – taking over from M. Joseph Miller, who had held the title for the previous five years. Long is no stranger to the northeast Mississippi region or Northeast Mississippi Community College and graduated from the Booneville-based college in 2011 with an associate of arts degree with an area of concentration in communication…mainly journalism and other related programs. During his time at Northeast, Long was instrumental in helping to get the student newspaper, The Beacon, back in print and served as the periodical’s sports writer during his time in Booneville. When not writing for The Beacon, Long dedicated his time to the Northeast baseball team serving countless hours in the field house at Harold T. White Field at Booneville City Park as the team’s top-ranking manager. While Long was a member of The Beacon’s staff, he was awarded the College Public Relations Association of Mississippi’s (CPRAM) annual scholarship based on his writing capabilities and recommendations by current CPRAM members. Long parlayed his managerial skills with the Northeast baseball team on the four-year level where the Tishomingo County High School graduate served as a manager for the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) women’s softball program for two months.

Blake Long

During his time under Windy Thees at Ole Miss, Long had the pleasure of visiting almost every venue in the Southeastern Conference – with the exception of the University of Florida and University of Kentucky complexes – and clocked miles across the country with one of the top softball programs in the Magnolia State. Long earned his Bachelors of Arts in Journalism with an emphasis in print journalism and a minor in history while at the Universitybased college and used his experience in the sports world to begin a stringer career for various local media outlets. One of Long’s main writing positions was a contributing sports writer role with the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal in Tupelo where the Northeast alum was able to gain valuable skills and expertise such as multi-tasking, meeting deadlines, teamwork and leadership attributes. During his time with the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal and its parent company Journal Inc., Long had the opportunity to cover a variety of sporting events throughout the

northeast Mississippi region from swimming to ice hockey to the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s (MHSAA) Bowling State Championships. While most of Long’s work featured mainly varsity athletes, Long ventured from the high school realm to aid the newspaper in its coverage of the local junior college sports scene as well. Long is a graduate of Tishomingo High School where he starred on the baseball diamond for his father and long-time Brave baseball and softball coach Jerry Long. Under his father’s tutelage, Long helped lead the Brave baseball team to the MHSAA Class 4A North Half Championship Series against Vicksburg in the spring of 2008. When not working, Long enjoys the annual “Long Family Vacations” where the Tishomingo County native and his family visit various sporting icon arena such as the Major League Baseball (MLB) Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Long Family Vacations have also seen the TCHS graduate end up on the west coast and earned him one of his more prized stories – being able to interview former New Albany High School catcher Eli Whiteside as Whiteside and the San Francisco Giants made a push for a World Series Championship. In total, Long has visited all 48 continental states during the “Long Family Vacations.” Long is a member of Maud Church of Christ. Long is engaged to former Lady Tiger softball player Leslie Hendrix and the pair is planning a June 2014 wedding.

When Northeast was founded in 1948, Bonner Arnold served as physical education instructor, men’ basketball coach and athletic director. Arnold and legendary University of Kentucky Wildcat men’s basketball coach Adolph Rupp were friends and as a result of this friendship and the success of the Kentucky basketball program, Arnold wanted the school’s athletic teams to sport a similar nickname. “Fighting Tigers” was adopted as the school’s mascot. Later, the school’s athletic program grew to include men’s and women’s varsity sports. “Fighting” was dropped and the teams became known as the “Tigers” and “Lady Tigers.”

Defense rules day at annual all-star classic

Defense ruled the day in the thirty-ninth annual Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-Star Football Classic held on the campus of Northeast Mississippi Community College Saturday, December 1. In the annual battle between the North and South all-stars, the South was finally able to break the tie in the overall series with a 17-3 win over the North and captured a 19-18-2 lead in the all-time series. Northeast has served as host of the annual event for 26 consecutive years dating back to the mid-1980s. Mississippi’s South defense, under the direction of Hinds Community College’s Gene Murphy, wasted little time in putting points on the board after the North held the South offense to a three-and-out on the game’s opening drive. Murphy’s South unit was able to force a score on the North’s first offensive play of the game when a bad snap landed at the North 10 and Hinds defensive lineman Rondrick Ragsdale (6-4, 230) was able to corral the fumble at the North 8 and rumble in for the game’s initial points. Northeast’s Chris Cooper, who served as placekicker for both squads, tacked on the extra point attempt to give the South a 7-0 advantage with 21:51 left in the opening half. Instead of playing normal 15-minute quarters, the annual all-star event is split into two 25-minute halves. With defenses controlling much of the action, scoring was at a premium with Cooper accounting for all the remaining points of the first half. Mississippi’s North all-stars, under the direction of Coahoma Community College’s Freeman Horton, were able to put a solid drive together midway through the first half but the South all-stars held the North to a 30-yard Cooper field goal with 11:21 to go in the opening half. Mississippi Gulf Coast defensive lineman Travis Taylor (6-3, 235) looked to give the South a golden opportunity for another score when the Bulldog sophomore recovered a North fumble near midfield at the 3:09 mark but the North defense forced a punt from Southwest’s Justin Holt (6-1, 180). That was not the case on the North’s third turnover when Pearl River defensive back Leon Carlton picked off a North pass at the South 40 with 44 seconds to go in the opening half. Murphy’s South squad was able to close within field goal range for Cooper and the Northeast placekicker put the South up 10-3 at the break with a 37yard field goal as time expired. The South squad tacked on another score late in the second half as Mississippi Gulf Coast teammates Clint Hatten and Cade Amaker connected on a 14yard pass from Hatten to the tight end with 5:12 remaining in the game. Freeman’s North squad pushed the South defense to its limit on the North’s final possession of the game and drove deep into South territory only to see its best drive of the day end with a Kiwaski Tenner (Hinds) interception in the corner of the end zone with 1:07 showing. Overall, Northeast had nine players suit up for the North all-stars. Avant (6-3, 305) of Maben, Collin Stubblefield (6-0, 290) of New Albany and Anthony Kibler (6-6, 350) of Okeechobee, Florida -- saw action on the offensive side of the ball for the North. Defensive lineman Chris Wolfe (6-0, 310) of Columbus and Kareem Brown (5-9, 180) of New Albany were part of the North defensive squad while Northeast athletes comprised the entire North special teams with Jonathan Harrison (6-6, 195) of Belmont handling punting duties and Cooper (5-11, 185) of Madison picking up the place kicking duties. Game honors went to Tyshun Austin of Coahoma Community College who received the Hubert Tucker Offensive Most Valuable Player Award for the North. The North Offensive Most Valuable Player award is named for former Northeast head football coach who passed away in an automobile accident in 1995. Hatten was picked as the South Offensive Most Valuable Player Award and received the Keith Daniels Award. The South Offensive Most Valuable Player award is named for former Pearl River head football coach Keith Daniels who passed away suddenly in 2000. Northeast’s Kareem Brown was award the North Defensive Most Valuable Player award after racking up four solo tackles and two pass break-ups. South Defensive Most Valuable Player Award went to Ragsdale. Ragsdale also was selected as the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-Star Football Classic Most Valuable Player and received the James H. “Wooky” Gray MVP Award. The overall game MVP award is named for former Mississippi Delta head coach James Gray who passed away in 1996.

Tigers ready to make postseason run

Ricky Smither aims to unleash some big weapons as his Northeast Mississippi Community College football team zeroes in on a return to the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) playoffs after a one-year absence. “I don’t know how many games we’re going to win,” said Smither, who enters his sixth season as head coach of the Tigers. “I don’t have a crystal ball, but I can tell you that we’re going into a gun fight finally with some bullets. “It’s going to be fun to watch. I know there are some teams that are loaded as well, but I think that if we play up to what we can do it’s going to be a special year for Northeast.” Young, but talented players must gain on-the-field experience quickly for the Tigers to enjoy success with just eleven combined starters returning from its 3-6 team of a year ago. One area in which Northeast does return know-how is the offensive line. Romia Wilson brings a state championship background from West Point and is joined by fellow sophomore Kortilous Ellis of Charleston. Booneville native Ross Smith had a great training camp and, along with his fellow freshmen, will have the chance to learn under one of the best offensive minds in Mike Markuson. Markuson joins the Tigers from the University of Wisconsin and had previous stops in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and the University of Arkansas. His lines have produced six All-Americans in the past ten years. The most well known of those players is former Ole Miss Rebel turned Super Bowl champion Michael Oher, the subject of the movie “Blind Side.” “We’re excited about the offensive line because we’re really excited about who’s coaching them,” said Smither. “Mike comes to us with about 30 years of Division I experience and we feel really good about that.” Markuson’s linemen will be protecting a position in quarterback that must im28

Louisiana State University (LSU) transfer Jerrard Randall is the front-runner to lead the offense with freshman Brady Allen of Corinth also in the mix as his back up. “Jerrard is probably one of the best quarterbacks I’ve ever coached, and I’ve coached some pretty good ones,” said Smither. “He can throw the ball honestly 80-something yards. He’s starting to fit in and he’s growing up. Brady is the type of guy who’s going to come in and not get you beat. He’s not going to make a bad decision and will get you in and out of the huddle.” Joining the duo of Randall and Allen in the backfield will be a series of new faces with the graduation of Jay Jones, who

signed to continue his playing career with the University of South Alabama. Newcomers including Tez Lane (West Point), Mitchell Cunningham (North Pontotoc) and Corbin White (Nettleton) should find early playing time. West Bolivar graduate Demarrion Haynes comes back to lead a fast group of receivers. The sophomore hauled in 19 catches for 322 yards in just six games for the Tigers last year. Former Ole Miss signee A.J. Jackson (6-6, 265) should make an immediate impact with his size and athleticism. Jackson “is making one-handed catches while running down the field like a tailback,” Smither said. “He’s a big target, has great ball skills and is a great blocker. His future is very bright.”

Parks (6-4, 265) transferred from Auburn University before the fall semester of classes began at Northeast. “Ricky runs well and catches the ball well out of the backfield,” said Smither. “He’s a great blocker and is just a really skilled guy.” The Bruce freshmen trio of Rashad Turner, Jonathan Bobo and Shaquille Bush also hope to make their way onto the field at wide receiver. Defensive coordinator Travis Macon looks to mold a handful of recent high school graduates into playmakers like returning sophomores Dequinten Spraggins and Parrish Huddleston. (Miami, Fla.), and the Northeast d-line under coach Greg Davis could become a force to be reckoned with. “Honestly I think with what we’ve got, this may be best four up front that this league has seen in the last couple of years,” said Smither. “These guys are pretty dang good.” Martice Buckley joins Spraggins in the defensive backfield and could see playing time at both safety and corner. Smither compares him to another former Northeast corner who has found high levels of success in the SEC. “He’s another Deion Belue (University of Alabama),” he said. “I don’t put a lot of people in that category because Deion was special. Buckley has got the same explosion that Deion had.” Antwan Wilson, Buckley’s former Charleston teammate, is another big-time talent at corner that will attract attention from Division I schools. Smither feels comfortable when talking about coach Jonathan Webster’s strong corps of linebackers. “We have eight guys that you could throw in a hat and just draw them out and you’re solid,” said Smither. “Nick Johnson (Olive Branch) played a lot for us last year. Nick’s going to play a vital role for us and has a bunch of experience.” Memphis, Tenn., product Marcus Robinson (6-4, 230) brings receiver-like agility to the defensive backfield. He’ll be joined by a troop of Noxubee County standouts, led by Antonio Ryland, that hope to prove their mettle rapidly. The Tigers have one huge gap to fill in special teams following the graduation of All-American punter Jonathan Harrison, who moved onto the Division I level at the University of Central Arkansas. Hunter Bull (Southaven), Miguel Graham (East Webster) and Wilson could split the punting duties. “We feel comfortable there even though losing Jon kind of put us uneasy,” said Smither. “We’ve got guys that can kind of get out of the pocket. We’re looking at going in that direction.” While punting may be an open battlefield as to who starts, Chris Cooper has the responsibilities of placekicking locked down. 30

Baldwyn’s Parrish Huddleston returns for his sophomore year after a freshman campaign that saw the Prentiss County native earn a starting spot for the Tigers in 2012. The former Madison Central star hit 4 of 6 field goal attempts and 15 of 17 extra points for Northeast in 2012. “If we score like I think we can, Cooper’s going to have a big year,” Smither said. “Kickers are hard to move on to Division I because every one of those guys walk-on, but if somebody doesn’t sign Cooper there’s an issue because he’s accurate and strong legged.” Allen’s good hands as a quarterback will help him see time as the deep snapper and holder on point-after and field goal attempts. LaVontis Smith, a West Oktibbeha product, and Haynes will use their athleticism to help Northeast gain yards on punt and kick returns. With the many athletic men that Smither was able to bring to campus in the last two recruiting classes, expect a change in

the way the Northeast offense and defense handles itself when watching from the bleachers at Tiger Stadium or when travelling to support the 55th edition of NEMCC football. “We’re going to open it up and with the athletes we’ve got now we’re going to be able to get in different sets, different formations and be able to do some different things,” Smither said of his offense. “We’re skilled enough now to where we can stretch the field both vertically as well as horizontally. “Our defense is fast man, big and fast. It’s been tough on the offense this camp because the defense is so athletic. We know we’re big up front, physical and run well. We’re going to attack people and make things happen. “Defensively and on offensive side of the ball, we’re going to control the tempo.”

Athletics prove to be among the best in 2012-13 Whether it was on the gridiron, hardwood, diamond or courts, Northeast Mississippi Community College athletics continued to excel during the 2012-13 academic year. Northeast athletics enjoyed a successful 2012-13 with athletic teams bringing back a state runner-up title, a North Division championship and scoring memorable victories for the college. Leading the way for the Tigers and Lady Tigers during the 2012-13 year were Kent Farris’ baseball team and Brian Alexander’s women’s basketball team. Farris led the Tigers to their first Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division championship since 1992 and the Northeast baseball team advanced to the MACJC State Baseball Tournament in Poplarville after besting Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in a best-of-three opening round series at Harold T. White Field in Booneville. Northeast’s baseball Tigers were led by Falkner’s Will Robertson, who led the nation for part of the 2013 season in runs batted in (RBI) and finished in the top ten in the nation in RBI and on-base percentage. During the 2012-13 year, the Tigers pieced together an impressive streak of four straight weeks with a player being selected as the MACJC Player or Pitcher of the Week. Robertson started the trend after receiving the honor for games played April 1-7 while Southaven’s Justin Neal was honored twice by the state organization – first for games played April 8-14 and then for games played April 22-28. Baldwyn’s Tanner Gaines, a Mississippi State University transfer, helped continue the streak when Gaines was selected as the MACJC Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 15-21. After posting a 30-18 record and an 18-6 record in the North Division, five members of the Tiger baseball team went on to sign scholarships with four-year colleges and universities. Booneville’s Kyle Stephenson signed with the University of North Alabama while Neal inked with Christian Brothers University in Memphis. Biggersville’s Ethan Estes headed to the University of West Alabama while the Tiger duo of Kyle Robbins and Robertson both became Statesmen at Delta State University. On the hardwood, Alexander’s Lady Tigers (14-12) picked up momentum at the right time after finishing third in the North Division during the regular season. Northeast women’s basketball team knocked off a pair of South Division foes en route to the MACJC State Championship game against power Copiah-Lincoln Community College on February 28. Northeast dispatched Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College 68-66 in overtime as freshman Kiki Gwyn (Kossuth) sank a pair of free throws with 2.5 seconds left in regulation to force the extra period and give the Lady Tigers a chance at the victory. After knocking off Mississippi Gulf Coast, Northeast rolled through Jones County 68-49 before dropping the MACJC State Championship game to CopiahLincoln Community College 64-46. With their run in the MACJC State Tournament in Poplarville, Northeast qualified for the National Junior Colleges Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XXIII Tournament held on the campus of Mississippi College in Clinton and found a familiar opponent waiting – Mississippi Gulf Coast. Northeast would not be as lucky as it was in the first round of the MACJC State Tournament as the Lady Bulldogs ended the Lady Tigers season 68-60. Under Jody Long, the Lady Tiger softball team returned to the MACJC State Tournament in Perkinston after finishing in fourth place in the North Division. Long’s Lady Tigers posted a 23-15-1 record on the season, which included a few milestone moments. Northeast recorded its first tie in softball since converting to the sport in 200001 as the Lady Tigers tied Copiah-Lincoln on February 15 at the Rush Invitational in Meridian and Long’s Lady Tigers opened up their home schedule by knocking off perennial power and former NJCAA champion Muskegon (Mich.) 7-2 on February 23. Long reached a personal milestone late in the season as Northeast dispatched rival Itawamba Community College 8-2 on Tuesday, April 23 for his 200th collegiate coaching win. During the 2012-13 season, three Lady Tigers were selected as MACJC Softball Players of the Week with the Erin Dixson receiving the honor for her work during games played February 18-24, Andrea Cutts picking it up March 11-17 and Haleigh Moffett turning in a three home-run game against Mississippi Delta on April 13 to secure the award for April 8-14.

Dixson was named the NJCAA Pitcher and Player of the Week for February 18-24 while Cutts picked up All-American status at the culmination of the season becoming the first Lady Tiger softball player to be named an All-American since Paige Wright was selected as an honorable mention selection in 2005. Under the guidance of first-year head coach Ben Shappley, the Lady Tiger tennis team turned in one of its most successful seasons in recent history. Shappley guided the Lady Tigers to a 3-6 record on the court and saw the only Lady Tiger sophomore – Elizabeth Mitchell – advance to the second round of the MACJC State Tournament in Tupelo. Shappley’s Lady Tigers scored all three wins on the road with Northeast knocking off Holmes Community College in Goodman 7-2 on March 19 and Northwest Mississippi Community College 5-4 on April 11 in the final regular season match. Northeast’s first decision of the year came when the Lady Tigers upended Hinds Community College on March 4 at the New Albany SportsPlex after the Tiger and Lady Tigers moved their home matches to the SportsPlex due to resurfacing of the tennis courts on the Booneville campus. After a rough start to the 2012-13 year, the Tiger tennis team ended the 201213 season on a positive note with the Tiger notching their initial victory of the season against Northwest Mississippi Community College 7-2 in Senatobia. On the hardwood, David Robbins ended his coaching tenure and made the transition to Dean of Students/Athletic Director after leading the Tigers to a 9-13 record in the 2012-13 season. Robbins’ Tigers picked up win in each month of the season with five of the Tigers’ wins coming during the middle months of the year – December and January. Northeast knocked off Northwest Mississippi Community College in its home North Division opener 95-92 and then dispelled Gadsden State (Ala.) 91-84 before the holiday break. Northeast picked up where it left off with a 75-65 win at Meridian on January 7 and knocked two more North Division wins during the month. After beating Holmes Community College 78-68 on January 24, Northeast electrified the Tiger fanbase with a last-second win over rival Itawamba Community College 75-74 on January 31 in front of a packed Bonner Arnold Coliseum. On the gridiron, Ricky Smither’s Tigers continued to be competitive and battled for a spot in the MACJC State Playoffs. During the 2012-13 season, Smither’s troops posted a 3-6 record and picked up all three victories on the road with wins over Jones County Junior College 3021 in Ellisville, Coahoma Community College 21-17 in Clarksdale and Mississippi Delta Community College 24-3 in Moorhead. At the end of the season, a pair of Tigers was named All-Americans by the NJCAA. Belmont’s Jonathan Harrison, the Tiger punter, was the first Tiger football player to receive first-team All-American status since running back Jerry King was selected as a first-team All-American in 1956 and defensive end Lavon Hooks of Atlanta, Georgia was named an honorable selection All-American at the culmination of the season as well. Eight Tigers signed scholarship offers at the end of the season including Donnell Chapman of Batesville who signed with Missouri Southern State University, Jay Jones of Horn Lake who signed with the University of South Alabama, Nick Thomason of Muscle Shoals, Alabama who signed with Louisiana Technical University, Jonathan Braddock of Ripley who signed with Southeastern Louisiana, J.R. White of Muscle Shoals, Alabama who signed with the University of North Alabama and Harrison who inked with the University of Central Alabama. Logan Stokes of Muscle Shoals, Alabama and Hooks both signed with schools in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) as Stokes agreed to become a Louisiana State University Tiger and Hooks headed to the University of Mississippi in Oxford Under the direction of first-year head golf coach Nick Coln, the Tiger golf team wrapped up its 2012-13 season at the MACJC State Golf Tournament at Dixie Golf Course in Laurel. Northeast finished the tournament in ninth place after posting a 321 on the first day and rallied for a 314 on the second day of competition. Corinth’s Blake Farris came on strong for the Tigers during the second MACJC tour stop of the year as the first-year Tiger golfer carded a two-day 160 to finish in a tie for eleventh overall after the two day event. Under the direction of first-year cheerleading coach Karri Davis, the Northeast cheerleading squad continued to provide positive support for the Tiger and Lady Tiger athletic teams whether it was on the gridiron or the hardwood, the Northeast cheerleaders continued to applaud the efforts of the Northeast athletic teams through the entire season.

NE welcomes five into Sports Hall of Fame

Northeast celebrated a pair of firsts when its fifth Sports Hall of Fame class was inducted on Saturday, October 20 during Homecoming 2012 festivities. Northeast saw its first softball player to be enshrined into the Sports Hall of Fame and also see first athletes from the 2000s inducted. With nomination and induction criteria stating that former Northeast coaches and athletes have to be out of collegiate athletics for at least five years before induction, a pair of athletes from the early 2000s will make the hall in 2012. Joining the already 25 former coaches, athletes and athletic contributors in the Northeast Sports Hall of Fame will be women’s basketball player Audrey Covington, men’s basketball players Guy Gardner and Freddie Copeland, softball player BrandiVondenstein Dannelly and alumni Malcolm Kuykendall. Covington, Gardner, Copeland, Vondenstein Dannelly and Kuykendall will join an illustrious cast of Northeast Sports Hall of Fame inductees. In 2011, Northeast saw Ricky Ford, Jim Drewry, Johnny Buskirk, Vincent Del Negro and Sherry Slayton Holland all enshrined into the hall of fame. Drewry and Buskirk are both former football players for the Tigers while Ford, Del Negro and Slayton starred on the hardwood for the Tigers and Lady Tigers. Ford, who guided the Lady Tiger basketball program for 30 years, also serves as athletic director and dean of student services for the college. During the 2010 induction, former Tiger football and baseball player Mike Grier, former Tiger basketball player Jack Martin, former Lady Tiger basketball players Kunshinge Sorrell Howard and Phyllis Stafford Dilworth and former football and softball coach and athletic director David Carnell all became members of the Sports Hall of Fame. In its second year (2009), Northeast Sports Hall of Fame inducted five members to join the initial 10 inductees with former basketball players Gerald Caveness, Clyde Jones, Evelyn Thompson, and football player Larry Parker along with former Tiger basketball coach Harvey Childers all inducted during the second year. Northeast’s inaugural inductees of ten former coaches, players and supporters of Northeast Mississippi Community College athletics included Harold T. White, W.B. ‘Bill’ Ward, Ken Lindsey, Chuck ‘Doodle’ Floyd, Gene Garrett, Adrian Smith, Kenneth ‘Cat’ Robbins, David ‘Nub’ Strickland, Earline ‘Woodsie’ Woods and Bonner Arnold. Biographies:

Audrey Covington (Women’s Basketball 1986-87, 1987-88) Audrey Covington starred on the hardwood during one of the most successful periods for the Lady Tiger basketball team. During her first year, Covington helped lead Ricky Ford’s Lady Tigers to the 1986-87 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship with a perfect 34-0 record. In Covington’s first year, Northeast swept through the regular season and knocked off Northwest Mississippi Community College 80-78 in the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) State Championship before heading to the NJCAA Region XXIII Tournament. In the Region XXIII Tournament, Northeast earned a return trip to the national tournament in Senatobia by dispatching Utica (Hinds) in the championship game and the Lady Tigers rode that momentum to a four-game winning streak in theDivision I women’s national tournament – including knocking off St. Gregory’s in the national championship game 68-64. In addition to winning the NJCAA national championship, Covington was a two-year starter under Ford and was named to the MACJC All-State and the NJCAA All-Region teams during her time in Booneville. Following her career as a Lady Tiger, Covington stayed with the Tiger theme when she signed to play with Memphis State University for a pair of seasons in 1988-89 and 1989-90. Benjamin Guy Gardner (Men’s Basketball 1998-99, 1999-2000) Benjamin Guy Gardner helped lead the Northeast Tiger basketball team 52

back to the national tournament during his time in Booneville. Gardner, a two-time Tiger Award recipient, was captain of the 2000 Tiger basketball team that captured the Mississippi Association of Community/ Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division, the MACJC State Championship and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XXIII championship en route to a NJCAA national tournament appearance under former Tiger basketball coach Mike Lewis. During his sophomore year in Booneville, Gardner finished the year second in assists and steals and was named to the MACJC All-State first team and the NJCAA RegionXXIII team as well. Following his sophomore campaign, Gardner was selected to play in the MACJC Mississippi JUCO All-Star game in Decatur. When not busy on the hardwood for the Tigers, Gardner was selected as Mr. Northeast Mississippi Community College and was also honored as an inductee into the Northeast Student Hall of Fame. Gardner was also elected as a Student Government Association (SGA) freshman class favorite during his first year at Northeast and was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Gardner parlayed his successful Tiger career into a career with the Mississippi State University Bulldog basketball team where he helped the Bulldogs win the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Tournament championship in 2002. Gardner helped lead the Bulldog basketball team to 27 wins – the most ever at that time – and was awarded the coveted Babe McCarthy Award at Mississippi State University. Gardner also excelled in the classroom for the Bulldogs as well and was named to the All-SEC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and was a member of the Dean’s andPresident’s list while earning his Master’s in Education in Educational Administration in Starkville. Freddie Copeland (Men’s Basketball 1973-74, 1974-75) Freddie Copeland was one of the Tiger basketball team’s most prolific scorers during the mid-1970s. Copeland donned the Tiger black and gold in 1973-74 and 1974-75 and became a mainstay in the statistical categories for Northeast. Copeland led the Tigers in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage during his time as a Tiger. Copeland was also honored with the prestigious Tiger Award during his time in Booneville and was named to the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-State basketball team. Against Coahoma Community College on February 8, 1975, Copeland showed his scoring prowess by dropping 46 points against the Tigers in a 113-89 win over Coahoma. After his time at Northeast, Copeland used his basketball talents to help guide the University of North Alabama Lions to one of its best seasons in school history. In his junior season at UNA, Copeland helped the Lions post a 19-6 overall mark and a 9-4 record in the Gulf South Conference. UNA’s 19 wins was one of the best seasons in school history and the Lions’ 12 home wins set a school-record for most wins by a Lion basketball team at that time. Not only did Copeland help transform his basketball teams offensively, Copeland was a threat on the defensive side of the ball as well. Under Lion head coach Bill Jones, Copeland and the Lions held the opposition to just 65 points a game during his junior season. While at UNA, Copeland led the team in field goal percentage and rebounds while being named a small college honorable mention All-American and the Most Valuable Player of the Gulf South Conference. Brandi Vondenstein Dannelly (Softball 2001-02, 2002-03) Brandi Vondenstein Dannelly becomes the first Northeast Mississippi Community College (NEMCC) softball player to be inducted into the college’s Sports Hall of Fame. during her final year in Booneville. During her two years in Booneville, Vondenstein led the Lady Tiger softball team to a combined 58-29 and remarkable 28-4 record in the North Division. In the 2003 season, Northeast finished the year 32-17 and perfect in the North at 12-0 while winning the North Division title, the NJCAA Region XXIII championship and appeared in the NJCAA National Tournament in Dodge City, Iowa. Vondenstein became a hard ‘out’ for the opposition and struck out just two times in 129 at bats during her sophomore season – an average of one strikeout per every 64.5 at bats for the Lady Tiger third baseman. In addition to helping lead the Lady Tigers to the national tournament, Vondenstein was named an National Fast-Pitch Coaches’ Association (NFCA) All-Region Louisville Slugger, an NJCAA All-American, an MACJC All-State selection and was picked to be part of the NFCA’s AllSouth Region team following her sophomore year. In 2003, Vondenstein also served as team captain of the Lady Tiger softball team and was named an NJCAA Academic All-American. After her time at Northeast, Vondenstein donned the black and green for Delta State and became an All-Gulf South Conference player at third base for the Lady Statesmen. During her two years at Delta State, Vondenstein started 112 of 115 games for the Lady Statesmen and was on the Gulf South Conference’s AllAcademic Team and was honored by the Mississippi Board of Trustees of the State Institutions of Higher Learning with the Hollbrook Award for Academic Distinction in 2005. Vondenstein later led the Bayou Academy Lady Colts to a Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) state championship in softball in 2006 – and had an 83-18 record with the Lady Colts. Vondenstein’s state championship in 2006 helped set the stage for five-consecutive state championships by the Lady Colts. Malcolm Kuykendall (Alumni) Former Tiger Malcolm Kuykendall came to Northeast Mississippi Junior College in 1966-68 and spent the rest of his professional life in education. Since transferring from Northeast in 1968, Kuykendall went on to get his Bachelor’s of Science in Education from Delta State University in 1970 and his masters of education from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in 1977.

However it was the time that Kuykendall spend on the hardwood and as a high school and school district administrator where the former Tiger left his mark. After a two-year stint at Nettleton High School (1970-72), Kuykendall relocated to Pine Grove and it was between Pine Grove and Belmont (198295) where Kuykendall brought back eight state championships and four state runner-up finishes to the northeast Mississippi region. During his 10 years at Pine Grove (1972-82), Kuykendall won three state championships in 1977, 1981 and 1982. At Belmont (1982-95), Kuykendall found his calling with five state championships and four state runner-up finishes. Kuykendall captured the state championship in 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988 and in his final year 1995 and finished as the state runner-up in 1984, 1989, 1990 and 1991. During his coaching career, Kuykendall compiled a 669-139 record while coaching women’s basketball and a 348-182 mark while coaching men’s basketball. Kuykendall was named the Mississippi Coach of the Year four times – 1981, 1985, 1988 and 1993 – and was his district’s coach of the year eight times. Kuykendall was inducted into the Mississippi Association of Coaches’ Hall of Fame in 2000, the Delta State University Coaches Hall of Fame in 2001 and was a member of the inaugural class of inductees for the Northeast Mississippi Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2009. In addition to his coaching time, Kuykendall was also an assistant principal and principal in the Tishomingo County Special Municipal Separate School District for almost a quarter of a century where he helped the district reach new heights as it was recognized with some the highest accountability rankings according to both Mississippi and federal standards. Kuykendall wrapped up his educational career as the Superintendent for the Tishomingo County Special Municipal Separate School District where the district had one of the best graduation and dropout rates according to Mississippi Accountability Standards. Under Kuykendall’s leadership, the Tishomingo County Special Municipal Separate School District was recognized as a High Performing District each year. Kuykendall was a member of the Mississippi Association of School Superintendents (MASS) Board of Directors in 2011 and 2012 and was named the 2012 Mississippi Superintendent of the year.
