History of Seaham Red Star

S

eaham Red Star are named after the pub in which they were formed. A Sunday morning side in 1973, they are now widely regarded as one of the Northern League’s leading clubs. Much of the credit for the Club’s early development belongs to Ralph Pigg, the initial Secretary, and Larry Phillips, the Club’s first Manager. The pair, supported by a small committee, entered a side in the Houghton and District League and, after a promising first season, made a successful application to join the Northern Alliance League in 1974. After a further five fairly successful seasons, the Club felt sufficiently confident to join the then highly competitive Wearside League in 1979. This confidence was soon justified, the Club winning the Durham Challenge Cup in 1980 and the League and League Cup “double” in 198182. In 1983, they were elected to the Northern League Second Division and , after some near misses, eventually gained promotion to the First Division in the 1987-88 season. Bryan Mayhew took over as Chairman of the Club in 1986 and, with able support from former Secretaries, Harry Hobson and John McBeth and a small hardworking committee – in particular Reg Atkinson, Dave Copeland, Jim Ferguson and John Smith – the Club enjoyed First Division status for an unbroken fourteen seasons. Notable successes during this period, included finishing third in 1993-4, winning the League Cup in 1992-3 and, after leading the table for most of the season, finishing second in 1999/2000. Mayhew was also a prime mover in getting the League to join the National Pyramid, calling the Special General Meeting of clubs

which eventually led to the historic decision being made. Just two years after finishing runners-up in the First Division, the Club suffered its first ever relegation in its near thirty years history. Even worse was to follow when, as a result of dwindling committee support, officials took the reluctant step of tendering the Club’s resignation from the League. However, following a positive response from a number of local people keen to see the Club continue, a new committee was formed under the chairmanship of John Smith and the resignation was withdrawn. The Club’s re-introduction to Division 2 at the start of 2002/3 got off to an unpromising start but, after bringing in Neil Hixon as Manager, the Star failed by the narrowest of margins to gain an immediate return to Division 1. Unfortunately for the Club, Neil’s achievements resulted in him being snapped up by Durham City shortly after the start of last season, effectively putting our promotion aspirations on hold for at least another year. However, with experienced Northern League manager Peter Mulcaster steadying the ship, the Club finished in a respectable mid-table position. Neil Hixon returned as manager in 2005 and along with Stuart Gooden and former Sunderland & Scotish International George Herd put together a side that won promotion back to the First Division in the 2006/07 season. The following season Hixon & Herd moved to Sunderland RCA and Gooden took over the team which finished in a creditable 8th place in the table. The following season saw yet

3 another change in management with former Darlington player Andy Toman taking over. Another dip in club fortunes saw the side face relegation. The 2010/11 and 2011/12 were two of the worst seasons in the Red Star history with the team involved in relegation battles which could have seen the club relegated to the Wearside League, both battles were successful and the club retained it’s Northern League status. This season the club appointed Mark Collingwood and Simon Johnson, who achieved great success in the Northern Alliance League with Hebburn Reyrolle. Previous managers in the Club’s history include Northern League legend Paul Walker, in conjunction with the long serving Chris Copeland; former Hartlepool Manager, Billy Horner; and ex Burnley player, Harry Wilson. Former players going on to join Football League clubs include Nigel Gleghorn (Ipswich and Manchester City), Bobby Davison (Halifax, Derby and Leeds) and Stephen Harper (currently with Newcastle United). Tommy Henderson remains the Club’s leading goalscorer, netting 211 goals in 276 appearances including a record breaking 62 in 1978-9. Honours: Phillips Floodlighting Competition winners 1978-79; Durham Challenge Cup winners 1979-80; Wearside League champions 1981-82; Wearside League Cup winners 1981-2; Northern League 2nd Div runners up 198788; Northern League Cup winners 1992-93; Northern League 1st Div runners up 1999-2000, Northern League 2nd Div Runners Up 2006-07.

ollowing a busy pre season programme, today, we get down to the real business of the league campaign with our opening fixture against newly promoted Willington. In terms of squad building I believe Colly and Jonna are ahead of the plans they put to the club when they took on the management role just over 15 months ago. The signings of Chris Mccabe, Shaun Reay, Adam Johnson, Tommy English are top drawer. All experienced players that have all played at higher level than the Northern League First Division. Added to these are Shaun Newbrook, Carl Thorp, Michael McKeown, Josh Allan and Chris Scott, which gives the Red Star the nucleolus of a very strong side. Last Saturday it was good to see the majority of the squad in action after returning from holidays and injuries. The new look strike force of Johnson and Reay worked well with last season’s leading scorer Channon North, and both Turnbull and English looked good in the middle of the park. The defence let themselves down and the goals conceded maybe could have been prevented. However the overall performance was very good against a side in Shildon that will be near the top of the First Division next May. Today will be a tough game, Willington came here, to Seaham Town Park, last season in an FA Vase tie and left victorious after a 2-1 win. A game a lot of the Star would want to forget,

not only for the result, but because we had two players red carded. I fairly sure we won’t be taking this game lightly. On Tuesday, we travel to Jarrow Roofing, a side that many have made favourites to win the division, based on the team that finished 4th last season and now strengthened with a lot of the Hebburn Town team that completed in the first division last season, who along with the management team from Hebburn have joined forces with Jarrow’s Richie McLoughlin. Next Saturday the Star travel to Brighouse Town in the FA Cup. A supporters bus has been arranged to leave the Mill Inn at 10;15 and return from Brighouse at 6pm. Seats have been going fast, so get in touch with a club member a.s.a.p. Price is £10. Deposits are now being taken as I’m sure some supporters will be disappointed when the coach is full.

irstly I would like to wish all the players, officials and supporters from Willington a warm welcome to Seaham Town Park this afternoon. All of our pre season preparation and hard work comes in to play today, both sides will have a points target in mind for the season prior to today’s game, Willington our visitors are a side that enjoyed a wonderful season in the Wearside League ultimately ending with a hard earned promotion back to the Northern League, I have no doubt that they will have another fantastic season this time around despite the step up, ourselves have been hard

at work trying to mould a new look squad that will hopefully allow us to crack on and improve on last seasons 10th place finish, players have been brought in and a number have left but my gut feeling at this point is that we are better equipped than we were at this point last year for a long hard season, additions like Adam Johnston, Shaun Reay and local lad Tommy English have been added to the squad to add experience and a bit of flair, today’s game will be as tough as they come, Willington are a good side that we know a little bit about after they knocked us out of last years FA Vase here at Seaham, lets hope that we can start the season with a positive result.

illington AFC was established in 1906 and joined the Northern League in 1911 They finished as runners-up in their second season, and won the league in 1913–14. In 1925–26 they won the league again, and in 1927–28 they reached the semi-final of the FA Amateur Cup, losing 2–1 to Cockfield in a replay. They won a third Northern League title in 1929–30, and in 1938–39 they reached the final of the Amateur Cup, losing 3–0 to Bishop Auckland at Roker Park, Sunderland. They resigned from the Northern League on 20 March 1940, but rejoined at the end of World War II. In 1945–46 they reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, but lost to Bishop Auckland. In 1949–50 they reached the first round again, losing to Horden Colliery Welfare in a replay. They also reached the final of the Amateur Cup for a second time, this time defeating Bishop Auckland 4–0 at Wembley Stadium before a crowd of 88,000. The following season they entered the FA Cup in the first round, but lost 3–0 to Rochdale. During this period the club finished in the top nine in every season until 1960, but thereafter saw a gradual decline. Although they reached the first round of the FA Cup again in 1973–74, losing 6–1 to Blackburn Rovers in a replay. In 1982 the league added a second division, and after finishing bottom of Division One in 1982–83, Willington were relegated to Division Two. The club struggled in the second tier, finishing bottom of the league in 1983–84 and 1991–92, and only finishing in the top ten five times in twenty-two seasons. After finishing bottom again in 2005–06 they were relegated to the Wearside League. They continued

NIGEL GLEGHORN From Seah

T

he popular early story of Nigel Gleghorn is one of a remarkable rise from obscurity. He was yet another gifted footballer out of the North East playing part time for Seaham Red Star and not looking as though he’d make the step up to league football. Things went mental when, somehow, he won a trial with recent UEFA Cup winners and top flight regulars Ipswich Town. Worried about leaving his well paid fire service job it took his wife to urge him to give professional football a go. Nigel may well have surprisingly joined Ipswich Town shortly before his top flight debut, at Highbury no less, on 19 October in 1985 but there’s an angle on the previous year that Nigel himself has apparently not even really touched on. It’s a short unremarkable tale but one that underlines the contrast and the shock a call from Ipswich Town might have been to all concerned. Having been a regular squad member for Seaham from 1981, Nigel was still youngish and well established in Red Star’s 1984 Northern League Division 2 squad. Despite this and for reasons best known to those concerned, in December 1984 Nigel and his brother, Ian, signed for and appeared for Dawdon CW in the Wearside League & Cup. This was not a transfer and the pair didn’t appear for Dawdon too many times, they signed simply to help out Dawdon’s former Red Star coach Joe Dixon. I say ‘help out’ but, although Dawdon made it through one League cup game with just 10 players when even Joe had to play, that wasn’t actually until four months after the

brothers signed and the whole thing does rather have the faint whiff of ‘ringer’ about it. I am in no way suggesting impropriety but the fact the Gleghorn’s seemed only to really play in the Cup might suggest a pattern, as Magnum PI might say. I am being a tinker, in those days it was perfectly acceptable for players to be registered for different clubs if they were in different leagues and if they and their parent club were sufficiently benevolent, as Seaham and Nigel were. These days, though, it does seem odd, not to mention exceptionally generous, for a player destined for the top flight of English football just nine months later, to be helping out an old coach in a league from which he’d ascended just two years previously. I am now imagining Kyle Walker popping back from England duty to

11

ham Red Star to Ipswich Town help Sheffield United stave off relegation to League 1. The brothers were eligible for the League cup semi final and they helped beat the mighty (Newcastle) Blue Star where Nigel scored both in a 2-1 win. Those two goals might have gone some way to erasing the memory of Seaham losing 1-0 to Blue Star in the FA Vase earlier in the season. Having upset the odds by beating the Champions elect, Seaham faced fifth placed Eppleton CW and beat them 3-1. Job done, the boys had helped out. Back to normal, the 1985/6 season re-started with Nigel and Seaham in Northern League Division 2. Then Ipswich’s scouting network kicked in. When was the last time you heard of a Premier League manager delving 7 tiers down the football pyramid, plucking a 23 year old from the ranks and sticking him straight in the first team at Highbury? I’m struggling but that’s exactly what Bobby Ferguson did in 1985, for the princely (and alleged) sum of £3,000. Nigel was too good for the third tier, as his 22 goals for Birmingham in 1991/92 shows. He was very good in the second tier, as promotion with Man City illustrates. It’s a bit of a shame he didn’t get a proper shot at the top flight, one season with Ipswich as the light of the Bobby Robson years burnt out and a couple of games for Man City before joining Brum. What a story a successful and prolonged top flight career would have been. Despite not starting as a pro until 23, Nigel had a 13 year league career and racked up 500+ appearances. Will such a rise as Nigel Gleghorn’s ever happen again?

Poor discipline cost the Northern League side as both Michael Turnbull and goalkeeper Shaun Newbrook were sent off. Newbrook’s sending off was in the process of also conceding a penalty and it was from this penalty, in the 66th minute, that Willington got their equaliser through Andrew Richardson. With the two man advantage Willington pushed forward and were rewarded in the 77th

minute when John Richardson scored to win the game and send his side into the next round. Collingwood said after the Willington game that the discipline shown in the game was unacceptable. Seaham will have to move on quickly though as they welcome high-flying Chester-le-Street. The Cestrians currently lie 5th in the table with 8 points following two wins and two draws in their opening five fixtures.

B

orn in Seaham 1980, Chris attended Seaham Northlea School and played in the succesful Seaham Red Star Youth team from 1993 to 1997,Chris made a move to Clavering boys and spent some time with Hartlepool United. Chris returned to Seaham and broke into the Red Star first team in April 1999, making his debut at Marske United in a 2-2 draw. Chris played 53 games scoring 9 goals before moving on to play for Jarrow Roofing, followed by a brief spell at Sunderland Nissan. In December 2004, Chris made his debut for Blyth Spartans, and went on

to make 198 appearances and score 41 goals before a bad break of the leg looked liked finishing his playing career. Whilst at Blyth Chris collected numerous individual awards including the Club’s Player of the Season award in 2008 and the Fan’s Player of the Season awards in 2007 and 2009. Chris along with Shaun Reay were involved in the Blyth Spartans 2009 FA Cup run to the 3rd round proper, before losing out to Blackburn Rovers. In 2011 Chris returned to the Red Star as part of the management team. Itching to get involved again Chris registered as a player for Seaham and played 10 times in the role of player manager proving to himself he’d recovered from the injury and could compete in the Northern League again. The new season saw Chris sign for Shildon and he soon established himself in the side. Chris went onto captain Shildon as they enjoyed a great FA vase run which eventually ended in a semi final defeat at the hands of Tunbridge Wells. Chris clocked up 79 appearances and netted 9 times. Chris has now returned for a third spell with the Red Star during the close season and played in all but one of the pre season friendlies.

MATCH Shildon AFC (John Ha REPORT

T

he Red Star took on a very strong Shildon outfit in today’s Memorial game in respect of John Hays, in what is hoped to be the first match of an annual pre season fixture. The visitors had a strong wind at their backs and put the Seaham lads under pressure from the kick off. It only took 3 minutes for Shildon to open the scoring, albeit with a slice of luck. Shildon skipper Mark Hudson found himself in space on the right and hit the ball across the face of goal looking for Paul Connor, unfortunately, for the home side the ball struck Chris McCabe and deflected inside the near post giving the stranded Shaun Newbrook no chance. The Railwaymen kept up the pressure and doubled their lead on 7 minutes. Sam Garvie swung a corner into the six yard box, Carl Thorp won the ball and his headed clearance found Tommy English at the edge of the box, the midfielder tried to help the ball forward but the strong wind held it up and Steven Turnbull sent it back into the danger area. The home side pushed up looking for an offside decision

against Connor which never came, the tall striker controlled the ball and smashed it past Newbrook from 6 yards. The home side’s first foray upfield saw Chris Scott find Adam Johnson, but the strikers effort flew wide. Seaham continued to have a good spell and when English’s corner was helped on by Thorp it looked like Channon North had pulled a goal back, however, the strikers header went narrowly over the top. The game was flowing well and Shildon’s Garvie went past Scott Donaldson and hit a good strike goalwards but Seaham’s Scott cleared the danger. Just before the half hour mark Seaham had the ball in the net when Thorp headed home English’s corner, after initially allowing the goal the referee consulted with his assistant and changed his decision siting a foul on keeper Lewis Grham by North. Five minutes before the break Michael Turnbull won the ball from

19

ay Memorial) 3rd August 2013

Hudson and fed Shaun Reay, Reay hit the ball well first time and brought a full length diving save from Graham. The Red Star, with the wind at the backs were straight on the front foot as the second period commenced, North was denied an effort on

goal by a well timed challenge from Darren Craddock. The next surge saw James Wood pick out Reay, who in turn found North but again the strikers effort was pulled wide. Shildon added to their tally 10 minutes in when Connor turned Thorp and played in John Brackhouse who finished well. Seaham skipper McCabe made a rare forward run and his cross from the right was well met by English, but Graham was well position to field the ball. A terrible mix up at the back involving Wood and Josh Allan allowed the ball to break to Ross Wilkinson, the substitute played a great ball into Connor who burst into the area and fired past Newbrook to make it 4-0 to Shildon. The scoreline at this stage was a bit harsh on the home team and Reay finished off a good move involving North and English with a well struck shot inside the post. The Star added a second in the closing minutes when Reay scored direct from a corner kick, wind assisted.
