History of Seaham Red Star

S

eaham Red Star are named after the pub in which they were formed. A Sunday morning side in 1973, they are now widely regarded as one of the Northern League’s leading clubs. Much of the credit for the Club’s early development belongs to Ralph Pigg, the initial Secretary, and Larry Phillips, the Club’s first Manager. The pair, supported by a small committee, entered a side in the Houghton and District League and, after a promising first season, made a successful application to join the Northern Alliance League in 1974. After a further five fairly successful seasons, the Club felt sufficiently confident to join the then highly competitive Wearside League in 1979. This confidence was soon justified, the Club winning the Durham Challenge Cup in 1980 and the League and League Cup “double” in 198182. In 1983, they were elected to the Northern League Second Division and , after some near misses, eventually gained promotion to the First Division in the 1987-88 season. Bryan Mayhew took over as Chairman of the Club in 1986 and, with able support from former Secretaries, Harry Hobson and John McBeth and a small hardworking committee – in particular Reg Atkinson, Dave Copeland, Jim Ferguson and John Smith – the Club enjoyed First Division status for an unbroken fourteen seasons. Notable successes during this period, included finishing third in 1993-4, winning the League Cup in 1992-3 and, after leading the table for most of the season, finishing second in 1999/2000. Mayhew was also a prime mover in getting the League to join the National Pyramid, calling the Special General Meeting of clubs

which eventually led to the historic decision being made. Just two years after finishing runners-up in the First Division, the Club suffered its first ever relegation in its near thirty years history. Even worse was to follow when, as a result of dwindling committee support, officials took the reluctant step of tendering the Club’s resignation from the League. However, following a positive response from a number of local people keen to see the Club continue, a new committee was formed under the chairmanship of John Smith and the resignation was withdrawn. The Club’s re-introduction to Division 2 at the start of 2002/3 got off to an unpromising start but, after bringing in Neil Hixon as Manager, the Star failed by the narrowest of margins to gain an immediate return to Division 1. Unfortunately for the Club, Neil’s achievements resulted in him being snapped up by Durham City shortly after the start of last season, effectively putting our promotion aspirations on hold for at least another year. However, with experienced Northern League manager Peter Mulcaster steadying the ship, the Club finished in a respectable mid-table position. Neil Hixon returned as manager in 2005 and along with Stuart Gooden and former Sunderland & Scotish International George Herd put together a side that won promotion back to the First Division in the 2006/07 season. The following season Hixon & Herd moved to Sunderland RCA and Gooden took over the team which finished in a creditable 8th place in the table. The following season saw yet

3 another change in management with former Darlington player Andy Toman taking over. Another dip in club fortunes saw the side face relegation. The 2010/11 and 2011/12 were two of the worst seasons in the Red Star history with the team involved in relegation battles which could have seen the club relegated to the Wearside League, both battles were successful and the club retained it’s Northern League status. This season the club appointed Mark Collingwood and Simon Johnson, who achieved great success in the Northern Alliance League with Hebburn Reyrolle. Previous managers in the Club’s history include Northern League legend Paul Walker, in conjunction with the long serving Chris Copeland; former Hartlepool Manager, Billy Horner; and ex Burnley player, Harry Wilson. Former players going on to join Football League clubs include Nigel Gleghorn (Ipswich and Manchester City), Bobby Davison (Halifax, Derby and Leeds) and Stephen Harper (currently with Newcastle United). Tommy Henderson remains the Club’s leading goalscorer, netting 211 goals in 276 appearances including a record breaking 62 in 1978-9. Honours: Phillips Floodlighting Competition winners 1978-79; Durham Challenge Cup winners 1979-80; Wearside League champions 1981-82; Wearside League Cup winners 1981-2; Northern League 2nd Div runners up 198788; Northern League Cup winners 1992-93; Northern League 1st Div runners up 1999-2000, Northern League 2nd Div Runners Up 2006-07.

ell, we into the real thing now, pre season games finished and the bread and butter league games started. We got off to a great start with a 3-0 win against newly promoted Willington, but brought back down to earth with a 3-1 defeat at neighbours Jarrow Roofing. Both games produced some talking points as well as some positive signs for the season ahead. Willington, were a young and at times physical side, but I think the experience of the Northern League, which a lot of our team have took the sting out of the game and once we started to pass the ball the result was never in doubt. The Red Star pitch allowed the likes of Tommy English to find the passes that created numerous chances for the strike force of Johnston, Reay and North. The same could not be said for the pitch at Jarrow Roofing where the grass was a lot longer and didn’t suit the pass-

ing game of Tommy. Jarrow, are a very good side and overran the Star in midfield with their 4 midfielders always in charge and with Stephen Young up front were very dangerous. Seaham’s stand in keeper Paul Gilmore deserves a mention for some great stops against Jarrow. I doubt it will be the last time I give mention to the match officials this season, but last Tuesday’s game it was disappointing to see so much inconsistency. I’d like to say more but will leave it there at this early stage of the season. Now that the holiday season is over I’d expect to see Colly and Jonna choosing from a full squad and we might be able to see what our best team is. Recent signing Darryll Donnelly has fit straight in and Shaun Newbrook has now served his two match ban will be available for selection.

irstly I would like to wish all the players, officials and supporters from Washington a warm welcome to Seaham Town Park this afternoon. Tonight we entertain Washington FC, a team that is currently going through a period of transition following the appointment of a new management team in the summer. Ourselves have had an indifferent start to the season, firstly defeating newly promoted Willington by three goals to nil and then going down to title favourites Jarrow Roofing in a tight game that I thought could have went either way, so it’s three points from a possible six, hardly the worst start but it should be slightly better in my opinion, the group of players that have been brought in to this club are still finding there feet and I

am in no doubt that once we start firing on all cylinders that we will be regarded as one of the best sides in the division, hopefully we can “click” sooner opposed to later, we aren’t a million miles off, going back to Tuesdays match I thought we were really unfortunate not to take at least a point from the game, the turning point was the penalty miss by Adam (Johnston), on a normal night he would despatch that ten times out of ten, Tuesday wasn’t a normal night, we couldn’t get going and we were unfortunate that key decisions went against us, it’s essential that we now show a positive reaction and kick on, there are still 40 games left to play, a lot of points are up for grabs, anyway I hope you enjoy tonight’s match, and I hope we enjoy a maximum return of three points.

Washington Club History TheAccidentalGroundhopper.blogspot.com

T

he current Washington side can trace its lineage back to Washington Mechanics FC, formed by miners at the town’s ‘F’ Pit in 1947. Washington Amateur League champions seven times out of eight from the mid-1950s, the Mechanics had a season-long sojourn in the Northern Alliance before moving to new homes at Usworth Park and the Wearside League in 1966. In 1970-71, over 3,000 fans saw the visit of Bradford Park Avenue in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round, the visitors – voted out of the Football League the year before - winning 3-0. After Usworth Park was torn up to make way for an access road, Washington played at Glebe Park prior to getting an 88-year lease on a ground of their own. The newly-developed Albany Park staged its first Wearside League game in 1980-81 as the club – backed by men such as former colliery blacksmith Billy Benson and Ronnie Ducker, a player, handyman, president and director in his four decades of service – began to plan for bigger things. Voted into the Northern League in its centenary season of 1988-89 – appropriately enough as

the 100th member club in its history - Washington were promoted for the first time as Division Two runners-up in 2000-01, unbeaten at Albany Park and just a single point behind champions Ashington. Relegated after two seasons, the club spent one more year – 2007-08 – in the top-flight before disaster struck. Vandalism had long been a problem at Albany Park, but in January 2009 a fire deliberately started in a portakabin spread to the rest of the ground. The first team kit, already laid out for a home game with Norton and Stockton Ancients, was stacked in a pile and set ablaze along with tracksuits, footballs, nets and first-aid boxes. While Albany Park was rebuilt, Washington relocated to Britain’s biggest car plant, sharing the facilities at Nissan Sports and Social Club. The move has since been made permanent, the old ground now left for junior sides, Sunday morning football and Washington Town of the Durham Alliance. Michael Hudson >

TONY CULLEN

T

Former pro turned Red Star favourite

ony Cullen, born in Gateshead 1969 was one a few Newcastle United trainee’s that were given their Football League debuts by Sunderland. Tony’s first appearance for Sunderland was towards the end of the 1988-89 season and when the new campaign opened he was in the starting lineup for the first four games before losing his place to Paul Bracewell, who had recently arrived from Everton for a second spell at Roker Park. Tony Cullen was used primarily as a substitute in his four seasons at Sunderland – only 11 of his appearances were from the start. His only goal came in the 6-1 demolition of Bristol City in a League Cup tie at Ashton Gate in the autumn of 1990. Cullen’s limited appearances became even more sporadic during 1990/91 and his only game the following season – a 3-0 defeat at Cambridge – proved to be his last. Tony had three loan spells with Carlisle, Rotherham and Bury during his four year stay and Sunderland. He scored his first league goal whilst on loan at Carlisle United on his debut at Brunton Park. Former Sunderland coach Frank Burrows was installed as manager of Swansea City and recruited Cullen in 1992 where he made 19 appearances, alongside former team mates John Cornforth, Rueben Agboola and Colin West. A month’s loan with Doncaster Rovers wound up Tony’s League career which including substitute appearances totalled 65 matches and 5 goals. In September 1994, Paul Walker managed to sign Tony for Seaham Red Star, despite the offers from other top clubs in the area. Tony made his debut against Northallerton Town

and went on to play 76 games for the Star scoring 17 goals and became a fans favourite with his mesmerizing wing play, ball skills and ferocious shot. One of my favourite stories from Tony’s time at Sunderland was when he’d been left out of the side in favour of Paul Lemon, he was told to warm up by manager Denis Smith. It was a bitterly cold November night and there was only 10 minutes of the game remaining. As Tony was warming up along the ash pitch surround in front of the clock stand at Roker Park, a supporter screamed abuse at Paul Lemon and hurled a pie towards him, unfortunately for Tony it hit him on the side of the face’ the fan immediately apologized to Tony as he returned to the dug out to clean the mince of his face. Denis Smith never saw the funny side and the substitution wasn’t made.

oping to get the April Fool’s day result out of the system, Mark Collingwood recalled Daryll Donnelly, Chris Scott and Channon North back into the starting line up. Seaham couldn’t have had a better start and were a goal up inside 45 seconds. Carl Thorp intercepted a pass intended for Lee Hamilton, and found Alan Pegram, the Star midfielder lifted the ball over the Washington central defenders and Channon North ran on to force the ball past Chris Bannon and into the corner of the goal. The home side were on level terms in the 7th minute Hamilton latched onto a poor back pass from Paul Kane and went on to beat Shaun Newbrook with ease. Eight minutes later the third goal and final goal of the game was scored, again it started with good work from Thorp, this time it was the Red Star skipper that carried the ball into midfield before producing a fine through ball from Craig Malley Daryll to run onto and lob the oncoming keeper. North looked to have scored the Star’s third, when after going past Nick Evans his goal bound shot struck Mark Patterson and rebounded to safety, Newbrook was forced into action stopping a well hit drive by Danny Young. The second half started with the home side controlling the midfield through Richie Latimer and Chris Tate, but not causing any

real problems to the Seaham goal. The sixtieth minute saw Latimer strike well from range but again Newbrook made a good stop. It was then the Star’s turn to have a good spell and Ivan Stoyanov fired a good effort at goal, Bannon beat the ball it but it fell to Malley at the edge of the area and his shot was cleared off the line by Patterson. Seaham were pressing for a third goal and Malley went past Locke but failed to pass when the Star had 3 men waiting for the cross. Washington continued to pump the ball into the area when Donnelly they could but Donnelly and Thorp were winning most of them, as they had done all night. The home sides final opportunity to grab an equaliser saw Hamilton push the ball wide from 8 yards after Young did well to get past Kane. A hard fought contest saw Seaham come away with 3 points with Donnelly and Thorp having good games at the heart of the defence.

T

ommy played in the highly successful Seaham Red Star juniors side of the mid nineties playing for the Under 12’s, 13’s and 14’s alongside Stewart Downing, David Murphy, Carl Shippen and Michael Kitson. These teams put together by Jimmy Ferguson won every competition available to them including the Scotland Cup, the Durham County Cup, the Dutch International Tournament, the North Tyneside International Tournament 3 times , the Russell Foster Premier League title 3 times and the Russell Foster League Cup 3 times. The unique fact about the Under 14 side is that all of the starting 11 were offered positions in Academies, nine of which were Premier League teams. Tommy joined Chelsea along with team mate Anthony Storey. Unable to break into the game at Chelsea because of a back injury Tommy returned to the North East and sought treatment for his injury. Newcastle United, through a good friend to Seaham Red Star, Peter Kirtley provided Tommy with the treatment he required and subsequently took over his contract from Chelsea and Tommy played for the youth team. His career in the professional game continued in the Scottish Football League with Livingston FC, unfortunately they went into liquidation and Tommy moved on for a spell with Queen of the South. Tommy, again returned to his roots and signed for Durham City, helping them win both the Northern League Division One and the Unibond Division One titles in successive seasons. In the successful 2008/09 season in the

Unibond League Tommy played in 60 of the teams 62 games and scored 20 goals including a hat trick in the final home league game of the season a 6-1 hammering of Moseley FC. The following season the side broke up and Tommyreturned to the Northern League and signed for Spennymoor Town. On leaving Spennymoor, Tommy had spells with Ashington and Newcastle Benfield, before returning to his home town club at the start of this season. A good pre -season saw Tommy play in every game since signing for the Star in the summer and give a match winning performance in the opening league game against Willington proving he still has a lot to offer and has already got the supporters buzzing about the new campaign.

MATCH v Willington REPORT

T

10th August 2013

he Red Star kicked off their season with a convincing 3-0 win against newly promoted Willington, the Star’s first opening day win since the 2009/10 season. Seaham took an early lead in the 12th minute when a Tommy English corner was met at the for post by Carl Thorp and he guided his header past keeper Ryan Mundell. The lead was almost doubled 3 minutes later, English threaded a ball through for Michael Turnbull to run onto and fire in a great shot but Mundell produced a great save to tip the ball onto the bar and over for a corner. English again took the kick and this time the ball eluded everyone and rebounded back into play off the far post. Adam Johnston hit a good effort goal wards on 20 minutes and Mundell was forced to go full length to push the ball away. Willington’s first forage forward came on 25 minutes when Shaun Reay lost possession in midfield and Corey Nicholson picked out Adam Sakr, the striker took on and went past Danny Gray before Turnball intervened and pushed the ball away for a corner. The Star’s next attack saw a long throw from Gray find English, the midfielders shot struck Channon North and deflected just past the post. English was booked on 46 minutes for a mis timed tackle on Sakr. Seaham continued to run the show and Reay was unfortunate when he shot narrowly wide just after the restart. Turnbull was the second Red Star player to see yellow for a

late challenge on David Pinkney. Channon North’s persisitence forced Willington centre back Stephen Howe into conceding a needless corner and from the kick Seaham went 2-0 up. English’s corner was met at the near post by Johnston and his well placed header left Mundell helpless in the visitors goal. Mundell was again in action 10 minutes from time when North played Johnston in on goal

and the strikers effort was well smothered. Johnston almost got his second goal of the game when a cross from Scott Donaldson was parried by Mundell. Johnston hit the loose ball towards goal and Nicholson cleared it off the line. In a rare Willington attack, Sakr hit a tremendous shot from 18 yards and Seaham keeper paul Gilmore did well to touch the ball over the bar. the Star added a third goal in injury time when Chris Scott lifted a ball over the head of Shaun Brown and into the path of Johnston, the striker went to the by line and squared to North who rifled the ball past Mundell from 10 yards.

19

MATCH v Jarrow Roofing REPORT

T

13th August 2013

he Star travelled to the much fancied Jarrow Roofing for tonight’s 2nd division game, and the turning point in the game was a missed penalty by Adam Johnston on 53 minutes. With the score at 1-1, Johnston’s penalty flew over the bar and the Roofer’s went onto win the game 3-1. The Red Star couldn’t have hoped for a better start, when after 6 minutes Channon North went past Dan Kirkup and found Mark Catcheside in space on the right flank. The winger cut inside and hit a powerful shot which keeper Dan Regan could only parry into the path of Johnston and the Seaham striker made no mistake as he side footed the ball into the net. The Jarrow lads soon got into their stride after the goal and Kevin Leighton hammered a shot towards goal, which fortunately for Seaham hit Chris Scott and rebounded to safety. In an open game both sides enjoyed their attacking moves, Seaham’s North was causing Kirkup a few problems and on twenty minutes good work from the Seaham striker again created a good chance for the Star. North laid the ball into the path of Johnston and a first time cross into the box was mis hit by Shaun Reay and easily picked up by Regan. then on 23 minutes the home side equalised when Stephen Young ran past Scott Donaldson and was one on one with Seaham keeper Paul Gilmore, Gilmore did well to push Young wide but the striker managed to get back into a shooting position and fired home from an acute angle. Young was involved a lot in the next few minutes and Gilmore did well to deny the striker on a couple of occasions. Just before the

interval, Young, again turned Donaldson and fired in a low shot which Gilmore forced away to keep the score to 1-1 at halftime. Seaham had a great chance to take the lead after 53 minutes when Johnston’s shot struck the arm of Leighton, referee Martin Carr awarded the penalty. The home side argued the point and Carr conferred with his assistant but stood by his decision, the delay in the taking of the kick and the booking of Dean Nicholson had Johnston hanging about more than two minutes before finally striking the ball over the bar from the spot. The miss gave the momentum back to the home side and Gilmore was again in action saving from Nicholson, from the resulting corner Kirkup headed towards goal and Young met the ball with a header of his own that guided the ball inside the far post to give the Rooofer’s the lead. The Star kept going forward and had two decent penalty appeals waved away by Carr. With the Seaham side pushing for an equaliser, gaps were left and Nicholson should have added to Jarrow’s tally but often his finishing was poor after getting into good positions. Seaham’s final flourish saw an effort from Kris Goss hit the side netting after rounding goalkeeper Regan. Dean Nicholson had the final word in injury time, when he intercepted a clearance from Donaldson and took his time going past Gilmore and firing into the net to make it 3-1. The game was good spectacle for the supporters and Jarrow deserved the victory, however, if the penalty had gone in and referee Carr was more consistent with his decisions it may have been a different outcome.
