History of Seaham Red Star

S

eaham Red Star are named after the pub in which they were formed. A Sunday morning side in 1973, they are now widely regarded as one of the Northern League’s leading clubs. Much of the credit for the Club’s early development belongs to Ralph Pigg, the initial Secretary, and Larry Phillips, the Club’s first Manager. The pair, supported by a small committee, entered a side in the Houghton and District League and, after a promising first season, made a successful application to join the Northern Alliance League in 1974. After a further five fairly successful seasons, the Club felt sufficiently confident to join the then highly competitive Wearside League in 1979. This confidence was soon justified, the Club winning the Durham Challenge Cup in 1980 and the League and League Cup “double” in 198182. In 1983, they were elected to the Northern League Second Division and , after some near misses, eventually gained promotion to the First Division in the 1987-88 season. Bryan Mayhew took over as Chairman of the Club in 1986 and, with able support from former Secretaries, Harry Hobson and John McBeth and a small hardworking committee – in particular Reg Atkinson, Dave Copeland, Jim Ferguson and John Smith – the Club enjoyed First Division status for an unbroken fourteen seasons. Notable successes during this period, included finishing third in 1993-4, winning the League Cup in 1992-3 and, after leading the table for most of the season, finishing second in 1999/2000. Mayhew was also a prime mover in getting the League to join the National Pyramid, calling the Special General Meeting of clubs

which eventually led to the historic decision being made. Just two years after finishing runners-up in the First Division, the Club suffered its first ever relegation in its near thirty years history. Even worse was to follow when, as a result of dwindling committee support, officials took the reluctant step of tendering the Club’s resignation from the League. However, following a positive response from a number of local people keen to see the Club continue, a new committee was formed under the chairmanship of John Smith and the resignation was withdrawn. The Club’s re-introduction to Division 2 at the start of 2002/3 got off to an unpromising start but, after bringing in Neil Hixon as Manager, the Star failed by the narrowest of margins to gain an immediate return to Division 1. Unfortunately for the Club, Neil’s achievements resulted in him being snapped up by Durham City shortly after the start of last season, effectively putting our promotion aspirations on hold for at least another year. However, with experienced Northern League manager Peter Mulcaster steadying the ship, the Club finished in a respectable mid-table position. Neil Hixon returned as manager in 2005 and along with Stuart Gooden and former Sunderland & Scotish International George Herd put together a side that won promotion back to the First Division in the 2006/07 season. The following season Hixon & Herd moved to Sunderland RCA and Gooden took over the team which finished in a creditable 8th place in the table. The following season saw yet

3 another change in management with former Darlington player Andy Toman taking over. Another dip in club fortunes saw the side face relegation. The 2010/11 and 2011/12 were two of the worst seasons in the Red Star history with the team involved in relegation battles which could have seen the club relegated to the Wearside League, both battles were successful and the club retained it’s Northern League status. This season the club appointed Mark Collingwood and Simon Johnson, who achieved great success in the Northern Alliance League with Hebburn Reyrolle. Previous managers in the Club’s history include Northern League legend Paul Walker, in conjunction with the long serving Chris Copeland; former Hartlepool Manager, Billy Horner; and ex Burnley player, Harry Wilson. Former players going on to join Football League clubs include Nigel Gleghorn (Ipswich and Manchester City), Bobby Davison (Halifax, Derby and Leeds) and Stephen Harper (currently with Newcastle United). Tommy Henderson remains the Club’s leading goalscorer, netting 211 goals in 276 appearances including a record breaking 62 in 1978-9. Honours: Phillips Floodlighting Competition winners 1978-79; Durham Challenge Cup winners 1979-80; Wearside League champions 1981-82; Wearside League Cup winners 1981-2; Northern League 2nd Div runners up 198788; Northern League Cup winners 1992-93; Northern League 1st Div runners up 1999-2000, Northern League 2nd Div Runners Up 2006-07.

irstly I would like to wish all the club officials, players and supporters from Thornaby a very warm welcome to Seaham Town Park this evening. I am looking forward to facing a new look Thornaby side, when I say new look I think most people would agree with me when I say that they have made some very interesting signings in the last week or so, frontman David Onions has joined the club alongside Lee Blythway (Bishop Auckland) and Ian Bickerstaff (Crook Town), they have also signed a trio of players from Billingham Town, Richie Walker has also joined the Thornaby revolution from Darlington RA, all top quality signings in my opinion, so tonights task will be a tough one to say the least. On Saturday gone we faced a young yet very good Birtley Town side and came away with a hard earned three points after a much improved second half display. Clearly the three points were the most pleasing aspect from the game but I must give special mention to the fantastic support that braved the cold winter conditions and got behind the team from start

to finish, the official attendance was counted at 142, let’s hope that tonight’s match has got a similar attendance. I was very satisfied with our second half display against Birtley Town, Michael McKeown, Danny Richmond and Coner Winter were unplayable during that 45 minutes and they put in the sort of performances that have earned them decent reputations within the Northern League. Our man of the match however was David Palmer who had a great game from the first whistle, players like Palmer don’t get enough praise but his direct style of play and honest work-rate has made him a crowd favourite here, long may that continue. Tonight will be far from easy but lets hope that we continue where we left off on Saturday and put in another workman like performance and gain another hard earned three points (fingers crossed) that will crank up the pressure on the top three. Anyway I hope you enjoy tonight’s match,

Colly

irst formed in 1980, Stockton Cricket Club’s football team was quickly accepted into the Wearside League to replace the departing Sunderland Reserves, the club moving to their current home of Teesdale Park in 1983 and the Northern League two years later, despite finishing bottom of twenty clubs in the previous season’s Wearside League table. Craven and North Riding County Cup winners and Northern League second division champions – as Stockton FC – in 1987-88 and 1991-92, the Teessiders finished as high as fifth in Division One and twice narrowly escaped relegation – by a single point in 1997 and a goal difference of one the following year - but have been a second division club since ground grading issues saw them demoted at the end of 2005-06, ambitious plans for new grounds near Thornaby town centre and Tilery in Stockton having both fallen through. Known as Thornaby FC since the start of the new century, recent years have seen the club

The Accidental Groundhopper

lose a final of the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup and win accolades off the pitch, establishing a junior academy, taking part in community initiatives such as the Football Against Racism in Europe Action Weeks and rebuilding Teesdale Park – long blighted by vandalism and fly-tipping – to Northern League standards with the help of volunteer workers and grants including £50,000 from the Big Lottery Community Spaces fund, the Peter Morris Stand named in tribute to the long-serving secretary who tragically died after refereeing a five-a-side game in 2010. Since finishing seventh in their first season back in Division Two, the club have struggled to make a consistent impact in the league, ending the last two seasons in nineteenth. Nevertheless, after being granted FA Charter Standard status for their community work in 2011 and with their Northern League future secured, the future looks a lot brighter for Thornaby FC. ast weekend’s notes mentioned the newly formed Supporters Club and the work that Gavin Paul has done via ‘facebook’ pages. We mentioned the need to get a few more through the turnstiles and on Saturday it worked as our crowd was boosted to 142. With both Sunderland and Newcastle not playing till Sunday quite a few took the opportunity to come along and watch the Star. The players also played their part by winning 4-2 in an entertaining game, now hopefully we might be able to hang on to some of the new supporters as we look to get back into the divisions promotion places. The Red Star are staging a Race Night following our next home game against Northallerton on 23rd November in the Mill Inn pub. Entry on the night is free but if any supporters would like to sponsor a race please contact any committee member.

ark Collingwood welcomed back skipper, Carl Thorp, Chris Scott, Mark Catcheside and gave a debut to Sanvir Randhawa, a recent signing from Sunderland RCA. Losing out were Peter Bryson, Craig Watson, Kris Goss and Danny Gray. The home sided started the game very sluggish and were second to almost every ball in the opening minutes, John Ryan latched onto a through ball from Rocky Andrews and only a last ditch tackle from Thorp prevented a strike on goal. The Star’s first attack saw Channon North almost give the home side the opening goal. The big striker got behind the defence and visiting keeper Nick Farrell deliberately handled the ball outside his penalty area to stop North’s effort heading goal wards. The match referee Mr Gilbraith appeared to get it wrong and only cautioned the keeper. The resulting free kick was fired well over by Watson. The visitors took the lead on 20 minutes when Catcheside lost possession in midfield and Matt Ramage drove on to hit a fierce shot from 25 yards which flew past Shaun Newbrook. Seaham replied immediately with North finding Kevin Gordon in the area and he placed his effort wide of Farrell for the equaliser. On 30 minutes Thorp blocked Ryans effort and the ball squirmed wide for a corner kick, the kick was taken by Richie Walker and his cross was met at the near post by Adam Drysdale but his clearance fell straight to Philip Horsman who volley home from 8 yards to restore Thornaby’s lead.

Collingwood introduced Watson for Catcheside and seemed to give Pegram a more forward role in looking for an equaliser. The Star started the half a little better but Scott was coming under more pressure from both Andrews and Andrew Simcox as the vistors pressed in midfield, and created chances for both Ryan and Chris Burton. Newbrook was often called up upon to keep the score down to 2 at this stage. Anthony Burnell replaced North and got the Star an equaliser after 75 minutes. Watson won a free kick near the touchline and flighted the kick to the far post, Thorp knocked the ball back across the goal and Burnell stabbed it home. For the third time in the game Thornaby again took the lead a minute later when Andrews was allowed to collect the ball some 40 yards out and run unchallenged towards the home goal, he unleashed a great shot from 20 yards that went in off the foot of the post. Thornaby took the game to a tired looking Red Star and deservedly took the 3 points. A lacklustre performance from Seaham with only Stubbs looking anything like his normal self.

IN FOCUS Daryll Donnelly

M

ark Collingwood brought in Daryll towards the end of last season to bolster a defence that was leaking goals. Daryll was with Blyth Spartans and their recent managerial change saw the centre back left out of the first team. Former Newcastle United midfielder Tommy Cassidy took Daryll to Blyth and handed him his debut in September 2012. Daryll took his opportunity and established himself as a first choice centre back under Cassidy, however following a change in manager, Tom Wade brought in his own players and Daryll’s chances became limited.

Colly organised a loan deal for the centre back to come to the Star, Daryll made 6 appearances and was named man of the match in 4 of his games as the Star ended the season on a high note. Daryll returned to Blyth, won his place back in the side for the last few games of the campaign. Red Star manager Collingwood continued his pursuit of the centre back during the close season and finally got his man. Daryll has established himself in the back four and has become a crowd favourite with his no nonsense tackling and reading of the game.

MATCH REPORT

Red Star 4-2 Birtley Town 9th November - Ebac Northern League Div 2

D

ue to the unavailability of top scorer Adam Johnston, manager, Mark Collingwood chose Conor Winter to partner Jamie Clark and the move paid off as Winter netted twice in the Star’s third successive win. The visitors started brightly and could have taken the lead in the 7th minute. Callum Hope was found by Levi Oman and went past Chris McCabe before firing just wide from 16 yards. The Star failed to heed the danger and three minutes later the same player did open the scoring, Lewis Donaldson lifted the ball over David Palmer and into the path of Hope, the striker drew Shaun Newbrook from his line and drilled the ball past the keeper and inside the far post. The Star reponse was to see a long punt from Newbrook flicked on by Clark to Winter who was just beaten to the ball by visiting keeper, James McGregor. Seaham drew level in the 15th minute when a deep cross from David Short was dropped by McGregor under pressure from Winter, the striker reacted quickly to volley the bouncing ball into the unguarded net. The visitor’s midfielders Oman and Jack Gurk were winning the midfield battle and created a number of good chances that fell to Hope and Daniel Taggart but the finishing was poor and the scoreline remained at 1-1. Seaham skipper Chris Mccabe was forced off with a recurring hamstring injury and replaced by Scott Donaldson. Seaham’s Michael McKeown went close for the Star when his goalbound efoort was kicked off the

line by Reece Noble, from the resulting corner Donaldson headed just over the top. The half drew to a close when a good cross from Short just eluded Clark at the far post. Red Star manager Collingwood replaced Josh Allan with Dan Gray for the second half. Gray’s presence in the air from set pieces was unsettling the visiting defenders and the Star took the lead on 55 minutes when a cross from Palmer was met by Gray, McGregor parried Gray’s effort and Winter needed two bites at the loose ball before forcing it home from close range. Five minutes later the Star opened up a two goal advantage with the games best goal. Short played the ball into the feet of Danny Richmond, who in turn found McKeown, with palmer timing his run up the right wing to perfection, McKeown played the ball into his path and Palmer placed the ball inside the far post leaving McGregor no chance. Birtley never gave up and deservedly got a second goal with 20 minutes remaining when Daniel Halliday crossed into the box and Oman fired home from 8 yards. The Star finally saw off the challenge from Birtley with 15 minutes remaining, man of the Match Palmer fed the ball into Winter who was upended by Jordan Lee, referee Mr McKitterick awarded the penalty but took no further action on Lee, who had to be replaced after injuring himself as he tackled Winter. Jamie Clark stepped up and drilled the penalty passed McGregor to give the Star a 4-2 win. Today’s game was sponsored by Ashoka, Indian Restaurant of Seaham.

Seaham Red Star U18s 4-2 Geatham

S

eaham took on 2013 County Cup Winners at Seaham Park in a midweek friendly. Hartlepool based Greatham play in the TJFA League where they currently have a 100% record. The pitch was in pristine condition yet again and both teams had the perfect opportunity to play a passing game. Both teams began brightly with Seaham having the better of the chances. It wasn’t long before Brad Oliver, who was lively all game, struck his and Seaham’s first with a well taken goal. However, Seaham conceded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area 20 minutes in and a powerful shot deflected off Jonny Corner to beat Curtis Richardson in goal. Seaham continued to play a passing game and were rewarded when Oliver notched his second before half time. James Lone returned to the side at half time with keeper Curtis Richardson donning a red and white shirt to put in a decent performance outfield on the right side of midfield. Richardson had two early chances to add to the scoreline but was out of luck on both occasions. Second half saw Seaham begin to dominate the game possession and chances wise and their 3rd

Johnny Corner had an outstanding game at the back for the Star

goal came courtesy of Dominic Soulsby who ran onto a through ball and kept his nerve to slot the ball past the Greatham keeper. Late in the game, Oliver scored his 3rd of the game with a great turn to smash the ball into the roof of the net to make it 4-1. Minutes before the end a handling error by Lone in the Seaham goal saw the ball break to a Greatham player who lashed the ball in from 12 yards out. The game ended 4-2 with both teams enjoying a decent midweek workout, played in the right spirit and refereed very well by Hebburn referee, Chris Johnson. Team: Curtis Richardson (James Lone), Josh Houghton (Jordan Mole), Nathan Lawrence, Jonny Corner, Adam Wrightson (Dominic Soulsby), Dan Ward, Liam Heywood, Tony Fox, Peter Jones, Aidan Heywood, Brad Oliver
