History of Seaham Red Star

S

eaham Red Star are named after the pub in which they were formed. A Sunday morning side in 1973, they are now widely regarded as one of the Northern League’s leading clubs. Much of the credit for the Club’s early development belongs to Ralph Pigg, the initial Secretary, and Larry Phillips, the Club’s first Manager. The pair, supported by a small committee, entered a side in the Houghton and District League and, after a promising first season, made a successful application to join the Northern Alliance League in 1974. After a further five fairly successful seasons, the Club felt sufficiently confident to join the then highly competitive Wearside League in 1979. This confidence was soon justified, the Club winning the Durham Challenge Cup in 1980 and the League and League Cup “double” in 198182. In 1983, they were elected to the Northern League Second Division and , after some near misses, eventually gained promotion to the First Division in the 1987-88 season. Bryan Mayhew took over as Chairman of the Club in 1986 and, with able support from former Secretaries, Harry Hobson and John McBeth and a small hardworking committee – in particular Reg Atkinson, Dave Copeland, Jim Ferguson and John Smith – the Club enjoyed First Division status for an unbroken fourteen seasons. Notable successes during this period, included finishing third in 1993-4, winning the League Cup in 1992-3 and, after leading the table for most of the season, finishing second in 1999/2000. Mayhew was also a prime mover in getting the League to join the National Pyramid, calling the Special General Meeting of clubs

which eventually led to the historic decision being made. Just two years after finishing runners-up in the First Division, the Club suffered its first ever relegation in its near thirty years history. Even worse was to follow when, as a result of dwindling committee support, officials took the reluctant step of tendering the Club’s resignation from the League. However, following a positive response from a number of local people keen to see the Club continue, a new committee was formed under the chairmanship of John Smith and the resignation was withdrawn. The Club’s re-introduction to Division 2 at the start of 2002/3 got off to an unpromising start but, after bringing in Neil Hixon as Manager, the Star failed by the narrowest of margins to gain an immediate return to Division 1. Unfortunately for the Club, Neil’s achievements resulted in him being snapped up by Durham City shortly after the start of last season, effectively putting our promotion aspirations on hold for at least another year. However, with experienced Northern League manager Peter Mulcaster steadying the ship, the Club finished in a respectable mid-table position. Neil Hixon returned as manager in 2005 and along with Stuart Gooden and former Sunderland & Scotish International George Herd put together a side that won promotion back to the First Division in the 2006/07 season. The following season Hixon & Herd moved to Sunderland RCA and Gooden took over the team which finished in a creditable 8th place in the table. The following season saw yet

3 another change in management with former Darlington player Andy Toman taking over. Another dip in club fortunes saw the side face relegation. The 2010/11 and 2011/12 were two of the worst seasons in the Red Star history with the team involved in relegation battles which could have seen the club relegated to the Wearside League, both battles were successful and the club retained it’s Northern League status. This season the club appointed Mark Collingwood and Simon Johnson, who achieved great success in the Northern Alliance League with Hebburn Reyrolle. Previous managers in the Club’s history include Northern League legend Paul Walker, in conjunction with the long serving Chris Copeland; former Hartlepool Manager, Billy Horner; and ex Burnley player, Harry Wilson. Former players going on to join Football League clubs include Nigel Gleghorn (Ipswich and Manchester City), Bobby Davison (Halifax, Derby and Leeds) and Stephen Harper (currently with Newcastle United). Tommy Henderson remains the Club’s leading goalscorer, netting 211 goals in 276 appearances including a record breaking 62 in 1978-9. Honours: Phillips Floodlighting Competition winners 1978-79; Durham Challenge Cup winners 1979-80; Wearside League champions 1981-82; Wearside League Cup winners 1981-2; Northern League 2nd Div runners up 198788; Northern League Cup winners 1992-93; Northern League 1st Div runners up 1999-2000, Northern League 2nd Div Runners Up 2006-07.

irstly I would like to wish all the players, supporters and club officials from Brandon United a very warm welcome to Seaham Town Park this afternoon. Today we host Brandon United in what is part two of a double header as we also faced them last weekend due to the NL fixture secretary giving us back to back fixtures against each other, something that personally I don’t agree with, I think most people would agree that back to back league fixture would never happen in the top flight so why should it happen at our level? anyway gripe over, last weekend we came away with another hard earned three points, three points that have now put us within touching distance of the top two sides in the league, it is now important that we keep applying further pressure on the top sides and see if they crack under the strain, we are at the half way point in the season and we know that every team will drop points at some stage before the end of April, its essential though that we remain focused and concentrate on ourselves and take each game as they come, lets not get look to far ahead as I am sure that there will be plenty twists and turns before the seasons conclusion, the most pleasing aspects of last weekends victory was firstly the three points and then the clean sheet, the form of the back five has given us a secure platform for us to go and play and create chances and score goals. David Palmer was rightly voted player of the month by our small but dedicated committee after the match on Saturday, an award that in my opinion he throughly deserves after a number of fantastic performances in the midfield. On loan midfielder Danny Richmond could play his final game of his 56 day loan spell from Shildon AFC today, we are hoping that we can reach an agreement with his parent club to extend this for a further 28 days, however at this point that is looking unlikely as Shildon

View from the Dugout manager Gary Forrest has indicated that Danny will be part of his future plans, if this was to be Danny final game for ourselves then I would like to say a massive thank you to him for his important contribution to the club. We also welcome to the club a new sponsor RS Total Fitness have agreed a deal with the club that will see them have there logo across the front of our new away kits, the kits made there debut last weekend and looked fantastic, a huge thank you to them for supporting The Star. Before I let you get back to your Bovril or should I say Boddingtons I would like to welcome newly appointed chairman Joseph Scollen to the club, Joe takes over the reins from Dave Copeland who will now revert to a new role as our new match day secretary as well as several other roles he has at the club, Joe is a business man who will do great things for this club, that I don’t doubt, a great appointment for The Star, with 30 years experience and knowledge in business I am sure that with his links and contacts this club will continue to thrive and grow. Today will be a tough game as they all are, here’s me hoping that today will yield another precious three points. I hope you enjoy today’s match,

Colly

Brandon United History F rom the 1968 Durham & District Sunday League to the most unlikely of Northern League champions thirty-five years later, life has rarely been dull at Brandon United FC.

Two years later, Brandon had tumbled to the very bottom of the Northern League’s forty-two clubs, and were only saved from relegation by the travails of those in the feeder leagues.

Little more substantial than an uphill street to the southwest of Durham City, and a few short miles from the Neville’s Cross battlefield where, on October 17th 1346, a Scottish army of 12,000 men was routed, their king, David II, captured, imprisoned and later ransomed, and both his Chancellor and Chamberlain killed, Brandon made it all the way to the first round proper of the FA Cup twice in the 1980s, losing 3-0 to Bradford City and, more narrowly, 2-1 in a second game at Doncaster Rovers, and have sent four players on to the professional game including the mercurial Paul Dalton, signed first by Alex Ferguson and Manchester United and later of Hartlepool, Huddersfield and Plymouth Argyle. Alan Shoulder, Blyth Spartans’ centre-forward in their famous 1978 FA Cup run, once managed the club with ex-Newcastle United, Manchester City and England defender Steve Howey serving briefly as his assistant. “A super move for us all,” Shoulder called it at the time – but in 2006 the club’s financial backers pulled out, the committee resigned en masse and United were relegated with just four wins in forty games.

It was all a far cry from that Kenny Lindoe-inspired triumph of 2003 – Brandon bettering runners-up Bedlington Terriers’ points total by seven points - or the two FA Vase quarter-finals United reached as a Wearside League team immediately before they were admitted into the Northern League in 1983. For a while, beset by vandalism and struggling to meet the deadline for improvements to their ground, it seemed that Brandon might tumble back down the divisions, but hard work off the pitch has seen the team begin to stabilise on it. Nineteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth in the last three seasons, the Durham club have suffered heavy defeats at the hands of Heaton Stannington, Whitehaven and Northallerton Town this time out, but made the second round of the League Cup with a win at Norton and Stockton and have also returned with three points from trips to Tow Law, Whitehaven and Esh Winning. good result against today’s opposition last week at Brandon kept the momentum going and stretched the unbeaten run to 7 games. It was good to see Adam Johnston return to the side following work commitments and hopefully we’ll see him back to his goal scoring form soon.

turned us from relegation strugglers to promotion contenders.

Off the field we see Simon Johnson celebrate his 30th birthday today, well, that’s what he tells me!!! Hopefully he’ll have a good turnout from the lads and their partners tonight and will no doubt be out of circulation tomorrow.

Christmas draw tickets are now on sale and we would like to thank Tracy and Fred Wilson for donating the first prize which is a food hamper valued at more than £100. Tickets can be purchased from any committee member for a £1 and the draw will be made following our home game later in the month against West Allotment Celtic on the 21st December

Simon has now been at the Star for 18 months and we have seen how his endeavours alongside Colly have strengthened the squad and

It’s been said ‘Jonna’s like a dog with a bone when he sets his mind on signing players for the Star’, something I’m sure Adam Johnson and Tommy English will verify as they were given no peace till their signatures were on the forms.

ichael was picked up by Sunderland Football Club at the age of 7 when spotted playing for Fulwell Juniors in the Russell Foster Youth Leagues. Michael started as a left sided player either full back or further forward and he scored his first goals for Sunderland from the full back berth. However, it wasn’t just the one goal it was a hat trick and to put the icing on the cake it was against Newcastle. Always well thought of at the professional club Michael was eventually paired alongside Jordan Henderson in the middle of the park for a lot of his 9 year spell with Sunderland. Following his release, Michael joined Fred Wilson’s juniors here at the Seaham Red Star, before making his debut for the first team in 2008 against Selby Town in the FA Cup and

went on to play 17 times that season, establishing himself as regular towards the end of season. The next three seasons saw Michael as an established first teamer and made over 100 appearances. Last season Michael felt the time was right for a new challenge and was transferred to North Shields where, unfortunately, his season suffered through an injury that required surgery. Following a close season operation, Michael has returned to Seaham and re established himself in the central midfield role he much prefers. The local lad is definitely a crowd favourite and is widely regarded as one the best footballers in the Northern League.

MATCH Brandon United 0-2 Red Star REPORT 30 November - Ebac Northern League Div 2 th

T

he Star’s unbeaten run continues thanks to a 2-0 win at Brandon. Chris Scott and Shaun Reay grabbed the goals but the win owed a lot to the defensive performance with skipper Chris Mccabe marshalling his team mates well. Adam Johnston returned to the Seaham attack and used all his experience as the Star pressed from the kick off. Michael McKeown played Johnston in on 8 minutes and the striker curled his shot narrowly wide. Home keeper Chris Sawyer was in the right place to block a shot from Conor Winter after good work from Reay. Brandon broke forward on the quarter hour mark with Kevin Hamilton picking up the ball after a challenge by McCabe on Mark Brishuck, and fired in a shot which Shaun Newbrook tipped over the top. Seaham’s next attack saw the game’s opening goal on 18 minutes, Chris Scott knocked the ball into the area and continued his run into the box, Winter returned the ball into the full backs path and Scott fired his shot inside the far post giving Sawyer no chance. Two minutes later the Star were denied a clear penalty when Johnston lifted the ball into the area, Mark Ferguson stuck his hand out and diverted the ball, but referee Stephen Kyle waived away the appeal from the Seaham players. The Brandon central defenders were being run ragged by Reay, Winter and Johnston but Seaham failed to add to their tally before half time. The second half kicked off with Brandon

having the advantage of the sloping pitch and McCabe and Daryll Donnelly were soon in the action defending well as Hamilton and Andrew Blackburn were pushing the home side forward. Hamilton fed a ball in to Brishuck and a last ditch tackle from McCabe cleared the danger. A good move from the visitors saw David Short pick out McKeown, who in turn found Winter, the strikers effort was deflected wide by Ferguson. Sawyer made a good stop from Johnston, the ball rebounded to Winter who was bundled over by Ferguson, but again Mr Kyle wasn’t interested in the Star’s penalty claims. Three minutes later Seaham got their second goal, Danny Richmond found Reay twenty yards out, Reay’s control appeared to have let him down and as Sawyer advanced the keeper was favourite to reach the ball first, however Reay’s pace saw him touch the ball past the keeper then pass the ball into the unguarded goal. Brandon moved centre back Ferguson up to centre forward and progressed to pump the ball forward at any opportunity, McCabe and Donnelly relished the challenges and usually came out on top. The Star continued to run the middle of the park and Richmond was unlucky to to score in the last 10 minutes, His first effort was blocked by Sawyer then the rebound was tipped over the top by Sawyer at full stretch. Three good points won with a workmanlike performance, good defensive qualities that only allowed the home side glimpses of Seaham’s goal, and the Red star strikers making the most of the opportunities.

Seaham Red Star Under 18’s

T

he Star’s youth team recorded a good win against Newcastle Benfield and opened up an eight point lead at the top of the Durham County Youth League. Seaham began well but ten minutes in, Benfield began to assert their authority on the game and worse was to follow when Seaham fell behind to a Aaron McEwen goal. McEwen beat two Seaham defenders before stabbing the ball past a wrongfooted Curtis Richardson in the Seaham goal. This was a major blow to Red Star and they struggled to play their way back into the game for the next 20 minutes. They stuck to their task and slowly but surely got back into the game prompted by the tireless Peter Jones in central midfield. A break by Seaham saw Liam Heywood deliver a low, inviting cross into the penalty area where Brad Oliver had the task of side footing the ball into the net for the equaliser. Minutes later, a run by forward Jordan Mole saw his shot hit the foot of the post. Liam Heywood latched onto the rebound to drill the ball into the far corner from an acute angle for his 7th of the season. Seaham went in at half time leading 2-1. Second half saw the teams evenly matched at first but gradually Seaham began to create chances against the Benfield defence. The next goal was crucial and it was created by the hard working Peter Jones who was barged over in the penalty area as he rounded the Benfield goalkeeper, Sam Busby. Despite being last man, the referee took no additional action other than to award the penalty. Jordan Mole assumed command and calmly

Peter Jones put in a tireless performance in midfield

stroked the ball into the corner of the net to give Seaham a 3-1 lead. Seaham continued to hit Benfield on the break and were assuming control of the game the longer the game went on. Substitute David Stansfield hit Seaham’s 4th when a three pass move involving a quick throw from keeper Richardson, a through ball from Liam Heywood and a run from Stansfield saw him beat two defenders and then lash the ball into the roof of the net to put the game beyond Benfield’s reach. Lewis Scorgie was sent off minutes from the end for his second bookable offence to compound a miserable night for Newcastle Benfield.
