Hebburn Town FC 1912-2012 100 YEARS IN BRIEF
H
ebburn was very different back in 1912, the year the football club was formed. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men; the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour; and the town, eleven years earlier, had welcomed a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle. Reyrolle opened an engineering works, which initially employed just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak, Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures, and export to 70 countries being known worldwide. The company also started a football team, and, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history, he provided the sports ground on which team still plays on in the Northern League. The football team formed in 1912 were elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League. There had been plenty of football teams in the before 1912, most notably Hebburn Argyle – who kicked off in 1882 by Father Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derby games with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000. The Geordie town also had shinty and curling clubs and even an annual Highland Games which was organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society. This 1912 team progressed, and flourished in the 1930s, followed by a wartime season in the North
Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and then returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles as we were still known as, had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points. The Tyneside club then had 28 pretty indifferent seasons in the Wearside League, though they won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968. In 1988 the name was changed to Hebburn and an application was made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved, other clubs canvassed and then Hebburn got a lucky break when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding to play elsewhere. The team which had finished fifth in the Wearside League and then played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, before winning promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 before being relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. The club then won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000. In the 2011-12 season, Hebburn Town reached the FA Cup fourth qualifying round and a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places. This was the club’s furthest ever run in the competition and the Hornets also secured promotion to the Northern League Division 1 for their centenary year.

The Platinum Lounge U nfortunately our string of defeats continued on Tuesday night when we lost 3-0 to West Auckland who are one of the best teams seen at Hebburn this season. We were unlucky that we lost both centre-backs, Chris Jewels and Jeff Forsyth, to injury in the first 15 minutes and were three down at half-time. However, the lads gritted their teeth and battled through the second half to prevent any more goals and we could’ve scored on two or three occasions. It’s also worth mentioning a great performance by Dan Regan in goal. Today we extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters from Consett, a club with a long and praiseworthy history. We lost earlier in the season to a narrow
1-0 score in the FA Vase but defeated Consett 2-1 in the league, both games at Belle Vue. A tight and competitive game is anticipated and one which we need to win to get more points on the board. Given the extended spell of bad weather, we are now entering a serious fixture backlog in the league, although Hebburn has played a good quota of games with 31 out of 46 completed, mainly down to the condition of our ground. But some clubs have played less than 25 games and three games per week will be necessary to ensure that the league finishes in the time agreed with the FA. For example, our final fixture of the season against Dunston has already been brought forward to next Tuesday to address the backlog situation. We also welcome our three match officials for today and wish them a pleasant and incident free afternoon on Tyneside and invite them, and everyone from Consett, back to the Clubhouse after the game to share a drink and a few healthy opinions.

irstly, I’d like to welcome all players, staff and committee from Consett AFC. I hope they all enjoy their day today.
We’re on a poor run at the moment, but spirit within the camp is still high. We have the privilege of having some great personalities around the place, and when the going gets tough, you can really see the strength of character amongst the group. West Auckland was a learning curve for many of our players. West are a tremendous side, and, in my opinion, the best front two we’ve had to play this season. Campbell and Moffat were excellent, and three mistakes led to their three goals. We aim to cut those errors out and get back to winning ways. We’ve played Consett twice this season and both have been very tough games. They knocked us out the Vase at Belle Vue but we went on to beat them 3-2 in the league. Dan Kirkup played up top and
was unplayable that day. Kenny has his sides very well drilled and has some excellent individuals, including McKay, Smith and Piecha. They play the same way and get great results doing it. They have been a fixture within this division, and are up there with the top sides, so we expect a tough game today. I’d like to take this chance to thank all our ground staff who worked tirelessly during the week to get the game on against West. Ricky, Paul and Gordon worked all day on the pitch, and it was in great nick come kick-off time. Sometimes this work goes unnoticed, but we all took note this time and would like to thank them all. I hope all the Hornets fans enjoy the game today. Likewise with Consett, and all the best to them after today for the rest of the season, and hopefully everyone enjoys their time at the HSG this afternoon.

Consett Players CHRIS ELLIOTT Position: Goalkeeper After three years at Middlesbrough’s Academy, he went to Bradford City. After a loan at Harrogate Town, he played for IFK Holmsund in Sweden. Signed in September, he made his debut v Shildon and has been No 1 ever since.
PETER JAMESON Position: Goalkeeper Signed in January 2011 after being released by Middlesbrough, made his debut as sub in a 3-2 win at West Allotment. Last season, while at Gateshead College Academy, he fought off the challenge of the experienced Barry Poskett to be No1.
MICHAEL PEARSON Position: Defender Had three years at Hartlepool United, playing 54 youth-team games and a handful of reserve outings, before being released at the end of 2010-11. Joined Blyth Spartans, then had a short spell at South Shields before joining Consett in October 2011.
IAN DAVIDSON Position: Defender An energetic left-back or wingback who signed in the summer after spending last season at Sunderland RCA. Ian, from Chester-le-Street, also has Northern League experience with Jarrow Roofing. He delivers a wicked dead ball and packs a spectacular shot
CARL PIECHA Position: Defender Signed in February 2006 from Ryton, the skipper is Mr Versatile, playing in midfield and even up front when needed, though his best position is centre-half, where he leads by example.
DAVID SCORER Position: Defender Signed in September 2008 from South Shields, the towering centre-back was in and out in his first season, he became a regular in his second, and was badly missed when he went travelling.
RYAN BELL Position: Defender A former Sunderland Academy player with lots of skill and pace, signed in September 2010 from Ryton. Previously with Ashington and Newcastle Blue Star, he had been at Kingsley Park three years. Has shown his versatility by playing right across the back and in midfield.
SCOTT MARTINDALE Position: Defender Re-signed from Newcastle Benfield for a third spell just before last season’s transfer deadline, Scotty provides options at the back and up front. Originally signed in October 2009 from SPL side Hibernian, he has also played for Tow Law. His first two spells saw him make 36 appearances, scoring one goal.
LUKE RICHARDSON Position: Defender The 19-year-old is another Sunderland College product who captained Lambton Street Boys Club and Durham County U18s. Though primarily a centre-half, he is extremely versatile. Made his debut in the 2-1 win at Marske in September.
DAVID BROWN Position: Defender A former England U-16 international who had trials at Crewe Alexandra after being released from Sunderland Academy, he joined Consett in August 2011. Played 26 times last season, scoring once - a 30-yard cracker. A shoulder injury ended his season prematurely and he’s just returning to action.
ANTHONY LUND Position: Defender/Midfield Signed from Bedlington Terriers in August 2010, this is Lundy’s third season at Consett. A versatile left-sider who loves to get forward, he was previously with Horden CW, Jarrow Roofing, Durham City and Sunderland Nissan. Has played centre-back, up front, and even as an emergency goalkeeper, keeping a clean sheet!
MATTHEW SLOCOMBE Position: Defender/Midfield Matty, who’s just 18, is another product of Sunderland College Academy, and was signed in January. Formerly with Ryhope CW Juniors, he made an impressive

CALVIN SMITH Position: Midfield Last summer’s big signing, the 25-year-old playmaker joined on contract from Spennymoor, where he was a member of their title-winning side for the past three seasons. With Sunderland as a youngster, he has also played for Dunston, Durham City and Blyth Spartans.
CRAIG ROBSON Position: Midfield A tigerish midfielder who rejoined from Ryton in September 2010, after a year away. The former Newcastle junior has also played for Gateshead, Bishop Auckland and Bedlington. Player of the Year and Players’ Player in 2010-11.
ANDREW CUTHBERTSON Position: Midfield ‘Cuppa’ made a welcome return in the summer after a season at Sunderland RCA. A box-to-box give-and-go central midfielder, he made 122 appearances in his first spell between 2008-11, scoring 11 goals. Has also played for Esh Winning, Chester-le-Street and Brandon, where he won the league with Kenny Lindoe.
STEVEN AISTON Position: Midfield/Forward Steven, who can play wide or an an out-and-out striker, was signed in the summer from 2nd Division Whickham, where he scored 13 league goals last season. Works hard, has a good turn of pace and has showed he carries
a goal threat too. Got his first league goal in the 1-1 home draw v Shildon.
MICHAEL MACKAY Position: Forward Released by Hartlepool United (where he scored 10 goals in 64 games over four years) in summer 2011, he returned to Consett, where his first spell brought 82 in 70 games. Ever-present last season, his 45 goals in all competitions included all 4 v Guisborough and all 5 v Jarrow Roofing. Has passed the 20 mark this time.
LUKE SULLIVAN Position: Forward The 22-year-old Consett lad is making up for lost time after 15 months out with a cruciate knee ligament injury. Scored twice on his debut for Tow Law at 18, and looked a real prospect. Began his recuperation at Ryton last season, and signed for Consett in the summer. Scored 4 v Newton Aycliffe in the League Cup.
RYAN KING Position: Forward The young striker, from Chester-le-Street, attends Gateshead College Academy. He signed in January 2012 and made his debut as a sub at Billingham Town (DCC). Still just 17, he scored on his first start v Shildon in April. Plagued by injuries this term, his two goals at Celtic Nation recently were his first this season.
LIAM O’MAHONEY Position: Forward The 23-year-old winger is a recent signing from Thornaby, where he had settled after spells at Blyth Spartans and Whitby Town.
KENNY LINDOE Manager Won titles with Annfield Plain (Wearside League) and Brandon (Northern League) before joining Consett in July 2005. Won the 2nd Division title in his first season, the Durham Challenge Cup in the second, and 1st Division runners up in 2008, 2009 and 2011. Unearthing some exciting young talent as he rebuilds the side. Started as a youngster at Darlington and was also on pro terms at Sunderland before dropping into the non-league game. Made a goalscoring debut as a sub v Norton on 9 February.
STEPHEN CALLEN Position: Forward Just 18, Stephen, who attends Sunderland College, signed in the summer after impressing in pre-season. A member of last season’s Durham County Under-18s side, he showed in friendlies that he knows where the back of the net is. Has also been getting game-time with Belford House in the Wearside League.
GAVIN ROSS Position: Forward A hard-working striker who made his Northern League bow as a teenager in 2010-11, when he scored eight goals in 15 starts and 15 sub appearances. Has pace to burn, but has been injury-prone. Mostly used as an impact sub last season, he got four more goals to his tally. Missing since September with a knee injury.

f you’re looking for international parallels then Consett are as close as the Northern League gets to Germany’s luckless Schalke 04. Title runners-up in 1977, 2008, 2009 - when they went into the final day needing only a point to lift the championship, surrendered a 2-0 half-time lead and conceded Whitley Bay’s winning goal with only seven minutes left to play – and 2011, the Steelmen have had greater success in knock-out competitions, lifting the Durham Challenge Cup six times and making it all the way to the first round proper of the FA Cup in 1959 and 1997, when 1,000 travelling supporters saw them go down 5-0 at Mansfield Town. Founded in 1899 as Consett Celtic, the club played its first competitive league fixtures in the 1919-20 Northern Alliance and has since taken part in the North Eastern, Midland, Northern Counties, Wearside – league bridesmaids again in 1969 and 1970 - and Northern Leagues. Consett’s first stadium, the Vicarage Field, was lost to the town’s expanding steelworks in the late-1940s. Its replacement, the Belle Vue, originally had two stands, one of which was paid for with the proceeds of Tommy Lumley’s move from the North Eastern League to First Division Charlton Athletic. Built by steelworkers using waste materials from nearby mine workings, the Belle Vue opened in 1950 with a game against Sunderland Reserves in front of a stillrecord crowd of 7,000. Now showing its age, one of the Northern League’s most atmospheric grounds will close for good as soon as the club is able to complete its long awaited move to nearby Crookhall. Sixteenth before today’s game, the Steelmen retain a strong spine despite their lowly league position. Top-scorer Michael Mackay hit 82 goals in 70 games
during his first spell at the club and another 45 last season after returning from Hartlepool United. In midfield, Calvin Smith won three titles at Spennymoor Town, while Craig Robson was on Newcastle United’s books as a youngster and was the club’s player of the year when they pipped Whitley Bay to second place in 2010-11. Skipper Carl Piecha has made over 300 appearances since joining from Ryton in 2006. ebburn Town have swooped to re-sign Scott Donaldson from Chester-le-Street Town to bolster their defensive options.
Donaldson made his Hebburn debut in January 2011 in a 4-1 away win against Guisborough Town after Paul Bennett signed the classy defender from Newcastle Benfield during the initial re-building exercise on South Tyneside. After making 15 appearances and scoring twice – both goals being bullet headers – Donaldson moved on to Chester-le-Street Town before joining South Shields and then returning back to Moor Park in November 2012. “It feels great to be back at Hebburn,” Donaldson said after putting pen to paper on the morning of the Consett game. “There’s a real challenge here and I’m thrilled to be a part of that.” “I’m delighted to be playing under good management and to be part of a good footballing side. And of course I only have great memories of my first spell as a Hornet. “I think we won about 80% of our games as we climbed the table after I first signed for the club. We were playing well, had some fantastic results, and I’m focused on us returning to that now. I’m in much better shape than I was two years ago – I’m much fitter and leaner having lost weight. “The immediate aim has to be for us to get back to winning ways. The club has had a fantastic season so far and my aim is for us to improve that even further. I want to help us prevent goals and start getting more clean-sheets on the board.”
There will certainly be strong competition for places in the centre of defence as Donaldson will challenge Chris Jewels, Dan Kirkup and Jeff Forsyth for a starting place when everyone is available, but that’s a challenge that the returning star is happy to accept. Dean Nicholson welcomed Donaldson back to the club by announcing that he was “very pleased to have Scotty back at Hebburn”. “We’ve worked very hard, very quickly, to get Scott back to Hebburn. A lot of the lads already know him after playing alongside him when Benno first took over as manager. Hopefully this is the signing that will kick-start our season and see us return to winning ways.”

n Tuesday’s column I talked about the fixture congestion and why I believed the league should start earlier next season. I talked to Mike Amos about this on Wednesday morning, where we told me that the Northern League kick-off for the new campaign, while not yet decided, is very likely to be 10th August 2013 – deemed by The FA to be the Sir Bobby Robson National Football Day - unless FA Cup fixtures force the league start to be pushed back by one week. “It seems to me essential that players, administrators and, indeed, a lot of ‘ordinary’ followers have a proper break… the need to properly recharge batteries, physically and mentally, shouldn’t be forgotten,” Mike told me. So while we will almost inevitably have teams playing thrice a week again next season, all will do so having had a nice break this summer – though I suspect Saturday 6th July will see a number of friendly games start. While the league’s position is understandable, I feel competitive games should still be played earlier in place of friendly matches.

n the back of two successive promotions, the Danish club Herfølge started life in the Superliga in 1995 with a win. They then went on to lose their next twelve games. Their manager, Ole Mørk was under pressure. He held his nerve, he invited the club chairman to travel to away games with the squad to see the team. Herfølge kept faith with Mørk, Danish Manager of the Year in 1990 and a man-management genius. Over the rest of the season the club would lose six more times after that losing streak came to an end. They survived…just. There were only two points and one place separating them from Ikast, who were relegated. But the club had hit their target and stayed in the top division.
The following season would see Mørk guide an unfancied Herfølge to a fourth place finish, two points behind runners-up Vejle (and Herfølge had two points deducted for playing Jákup Mikkelsen before the Faroese international’s clearance had arrived following an administrative error). It just goes to show that a losing streak, when put into the right context, isn’t always a bad thing. It helped build character in a Herfølge side that was beneficial the following season. And those twelve games lost in a row in 1995 were meaningless come the end of the season when weighed against their points total. The Northern League and Hebburn Town may not be the Danish Superliga, but this story is worth remembering with nine games lost in a row.

What are your aims at Hebburn Town, for the rest of the season and in the long run?
A
We had a great start to the season, but we’ve hit a bit of a rough patch at the minute. If we get a good end and finish in the top ten that’d be unbelievable. The main aim is to avoid relegation and try year on year to improve. As well as the players learning, we are learning as well. You’ve got to enjoy what you’re doing, you’ve got to want to come to Hebburn, want to be there and enjoy your Saturday night, not get dragged around the Metro Centre by your missus. It’s became a family club, right from the top to the bottom. From the bloke who puts the nets up, to the chairman, to the players, to me and Benno. Everybody really enjoys it and gets behind each other and ultimately you can tell that on a Saturday afternoon.

How did your time at WBA help you as a player and as an assistant manager?
In football you learn every day, every five minutes. I learnt the very best from Bryan Robson, Tony Mowbray and Nigel Pearce. I’ve always wanted to get into the side of the game I’m in now. I follow Brendan Rogers quite a lot; I like what he does and try to use that in the way I talk

to the players. Ultimately you’ve got to be your own person. I say what I feel and what I think needs to be contributed towards the team. Sometimes I’ll be wrong, and I’ll be the first to admit that. But we will make mistakes and we will learn from them. We’re trying to keep our standards as high as we can. What does it mean for you to play for a club like Hebburn?
It’s tremendous. It’s also hard to describe, because a lot of teams around us in the league treat it as ‘money in their hand’, but Hebburn really does mean something to a lot of people. Everyone appreciates what the committee do at the club, from putting the nets up early doors on a Saturday to working late behind the bar. Me and Benno love it, we absolutely do. You’ve got a job and a missus, but you have to be dedicated. When you’re losing you need to dig in and know who you are digging in for. That badge means a lot for a lot of people. That’s what we base it on, how much it means to other people. All the lads are on our side and see where it’s going. Hopefully come May we’re going to be in a position where we’re still in the league and moving forward.

Shaunagh joined Hebburn Town at the start of the 201213 season after achieving a 2:1 in her Bsc (hons) degree in Physiotherapy at Teesside University. Born in 1990 and growing up in Fulwell, Shaunagh is awaiting full-time work within the NHS, but helps out at events such as the Great North Run with sports massages on athletes. This is Shaunagh’s first role in football and as well as being of great experience to her in dealing with sports injuries, she’s been a great asset to the club as she embarks on what should be a great career in her profession.
