Hebburn Town FC 1912-2012 100 YEARS IN BRIEF

H

ebburn was very different back in 1912, the year the football club was formed. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men; the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour; and the town, eleven years earlier, had welcomed a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle. Reyrolle opened an engineering works, which initially employed just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak, Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures, and export to 70 countries being known worldwide. The company also started a football team, and, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history, he provided the sports ground on which team still plays on in the Northern League. The football team formed in 1912 were elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League. There had been plenty of football teams in the before 1912, most notably Hebburn Argyle – who kicked off in 1882 by Father Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derby games with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000. The Geordie town also had shinty and curling clubs and even an annual Highland Games which was organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society. This 1912 team progressed, and flourished in the 1930s, followed by a wartime season in the North

Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and then returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles as we were still known as, had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points. The Tyneside club then had 28 pretty indifferent seasons in the Wearside League, though they won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968. In 1988 the name was changed to Hebburn and an application was made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved, other clubs canvassed and then Hebburn got a lucky break when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding to play elsewhere. The team which had finished fifth in the Wearside League and then played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, before winning promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 before being relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. The club then won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000. In the 2011-12 season, Hebburn Town reached the FA Cup fourth qualifying round and a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places. This was the club’s furthest ever run in the competition and the Hornets also secured promotion to the Northern League Division 1 for their centenary year.

The Platinum Lounge W ell, we’re still chasing this elusive victory after our 5-3 defeat against Ashington on Tuesday, a game in which we scorned many chances and a game that we could have won. At least the game took place, and although we have played more games than most other teams in the league, we are being dragged into the end of season fixture pile up. After our game today we have four more matches in March - all away from home! This may give our pitch some time to recover following a succession of matches which have been played on saturated ground and have taken their toll on the condition of the turf. As mentioned in the last match programme, the situation in the bottom half of the league is getting extremely tight and we must start picking up points.

The effort put in by Paul Bennett’s lads cannot be faulted and, with a touch of luck, we can return to winning ways. Today we welcome our visitors from across the Cumbrian border: Celtic Nation, who changed their name from Gillford Park at the beginning of the season. They were promoted alongside ourselves and Team Northumbria and have had a steady season and currently sit in ninth position with 45 points; a great achievement given that they were in the Northern Alliance only a few seasons ago. Games against the Carlisle based team have always been competitive and we anticipate another hard match today having lost the away fixture 3-0 earlier in the season. We also extend a warm welcome to our three match officials and hope they have a pleasant and incident free afternoon on South Tyneside. Everyone is invited back to the clubhouse for a gargle and a healthy exchange of football opinions afterwards.

The Dugout W ell, after such a disappointing run of late the last two games have given us alot of optimism that we are starting to get back to how we were playing before Christmas.

Supporters who are getting disgruntled have to remember just how far this club has come over the last two years. I have only had one full season in charge, and it was the most successful in the club’s history....and then this season we started off like a house on fire but have suffered of late, but fourth bottom was always the target and keeping this club in the league for the first time in their history and avoiding relegation, which is what happened to Hebburn the other time the club has been in this league. It has proven difficult as we can’t compete with 95% of teams in this league in terms of budget and the players deserve every bit of credit....the majority of

them have been here since we started the journey just over a season and a half ago. These lads have given everything to Hebburn Town FC and deserve the backing and support through this rough period. The players have remained loyal and dedicated, despite the temptations of more money and higher profile clubs, to stay and buy into what we started out at the start of season 2011-12. Therefore, with hard work and dedication and the togetherness of these lads we will see the tide turn and get the results we need over the remaining five weeks of the season to enable this club to remain in this league next season and hopefully progress from there.

All the best,

Paul Bennett Manager

Meet The Visitors Celtic Nation have a bigger squad than this but only submitted this information

DAN LOWSON A great signing for the club in the summer of 2012 from Alfreton Town. From Newcastle, Dan has also previously played for Gretna, Newcastle Blue Star, Darlington and Luton Town.

LEE HOOLICKIN Exciting defender who has played at a higher level with Scottish League club Annan Athletic.

JAMES PARKER Moved across from city rivals Harraby Catholic, tough tackling centre-back Parker was heralded as one of the stand-out players for Harraby.

GRAEME LEE Hugely experienced centre-back who has hundreds of games in league football including spells at Doncaster & Sheffield Wednesday. Also now coaching at the club.

MARK BUTLER Midfielder Mark was influential in our championship winning Alliance season with a scoring ration of one goal from just over every second game from midfield, and took part in every tie on the way to winning the Combination Cup.

STEPHEN SKINNER Steven is an ex-professional who brings hard work and commit-

ment to the team in midfield. ‘Skinner’ is a real danger from set pieces, but is as prolific a scorer as you’re likely to see.

GRAHAM ANTHONY Graham has a wealth of experience in the football league with Carlisle United. In local non-league circles, Graham has played for Workington Reds and Penrith. His composure, vision and passing are his main qualities.

MICHAEL REED Prolific Striker formerly of Penrith – well known in Northern League circles.

TYRAN TAYLOR Towering centre-half who is as dependable as they come. Integral part of the Gilly Defence.

RYAN ERRINGTON Tricky attacker who has had an impressive run of pre-season form. ‘Peapod’ will undoubtedly be among the goals this coming season.

LIAM HENDERSON Midfield player on loan from Newcastle United academy side. He has shone in pre-season games.

Matchday Programme March 16 2013 Celtic Nation

Celtic Nation O nly seven men – including club co-founders Mike Linden, Geoff Andrews and Steve Skinner, a former midfielder at Carlisle United, Queen of the South and Gretna – were present at Gillford Park’s first ever training session in 2005. Four years later they had progressed through all three divisions of the Northern Football Alliance; another twelve months and the Northern League’s youngest club sat mid-table in Division Two and had made their debut appearance in the FA Cup. With a 25-year lease on a ground capable of holding 4,000 spectators and new Conference-standard floodlights installed, the management team of Skinner and Stuart Bell should have spent the summer of 2010 laying plans for another promotion bid. Instead, amid rumours that landlords the Carlisle and District Railway Club were busy seeking more lucrative tenants, a sudden raft of health and safety issues saw the team locked out of the stadium and forced to play their opening nineteen games of the season away from home. Out of the drama came success. Last season, fired by 21 goals each from Marc Shiels and Gavin Barton, Skinner’s side finished second in the Division

Two table. Promotion, clinched in a 2-1 victory at Chester-le-Street Town, was followed by a spate of new summer signings as the club, financed by American-based businessman Frank Lynch, changed its name to Celtic Nation and announced an ambitious two-year plan to get out of the Northern League. Graeme Lee, once of Doncaster Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday, joined as player-coach. Martin Brittain and Paul Arnison dropped down from the Conference and Adam Boyd, a £500,000 signing for Luton Town in the days Gillford Park were playing in the middle tier of the Northern Alliance, signed after his release from Hartlepool United. While things haven’t always gone exactly according to plan – Boyd left by mutual consent after three months and Spennymoor and Darlington have long since run away with the title race - the big spenders beat the Hornets 3-0 back in October and go into today’s game well placed in the top half of the league table. For good or bad, things are certainly never dull at Celtic Nation FC. By Michael Hudson

Having made 81 appearances to date, the 24-year-old shot-stopper made his debut – and kept a clean sheet - in the FA Cup match against Runcorn Linnetts before going on to play against Gateshead and then win promotion with the Hornets. Dan was a late starter to keeping goal, remembering: “I was 13 and our goalkeeper didn’t show up for a friendly on a Sunday morning. I went in and I enjoyed it, so I played in a few more friendly games in goal and haven’t come out since!” There was nearly European success for the young ‘keeper: “One of my greatest memories was a cup final in Spain where we played teams a year above ourselves and from all over Europe. “We lost on penalties and I missed the second last one; if I had scored we would’ve won... but at least I didn’t lose it for us - that was Chris Tate! “Our promotion season last year is my greatest memory, despite the junior league and cup wins I have. “Being part of the Hebburn team

In Focus

DAN REGAN has been great past over the past 18 months, with the FA Cup run, then promotion and the start to this season, but recently we’ve just hit a patch where we can’t seem to buy a win, but hopefully that’ll change as we are trying to put it right. “We’ve had a very good season, though. We would take this place if it were offered at the start, but I can’t help but think of what could have been as we haven’t won in ten league games – if we had then we would still be in the top ten…but we were always going to hit a blip.” Confident and focused, Dan spends his evenings rubbing shoulders with the VIPs along the Diamond Strip in Newcastle.

Usually, if he doesn’t have your name then you aren’t a VIP. Perhaps his work on a Saturday night accounts for his grooming technique after games? “I’m not sure why I’m always the last, and take the longest, in the showers. My excuse would be that I’m always last in but that’s not the case,” Dan laughs. “Maybe the other lads just don’t get washed?” Looking ahead towards the run-in for this season and then beyond, Dan knows what he wants: “My future hopes are to play at the highest standard as I possibly can and for the club to finish in the top ten this season and then next year, hopefully, do better again.”

always be played on grass, but not every non-league club has a surface, or a groundsmen, as good as say Hebburn’s.

That should be the growing question for many Northern League clubs after another winter of discontent.

With a 3G or 4G pitch, games generally won’t be called off - and even better is the longterm potential.

The terrible weather over the last few months has seen the fixture list decimated as teams have struggled with frozen and waterlogged pitches.

While they are admittedly expensive to install, they will more than pay their way in a very short time.

One team that hasn’t had that problem is Durham City, whose Esh Group Stadium ground is home to a 3G artificial pitch. These surfaces are controversial, and Durham have certainly had issues in the past with not being allowed to play certain games on it. Indeed, traditionalists may say that football should

If it’s a community club you want, what better way than having a pitch you can hire out all year round to junior teams, thus not only generating thousands of pounds in revenue but also attracting kids to your club who may be future players or supporters. he life and times of a journalist isn’t all glamour, but it beats working for a living. Take the differing fortunes of myself and our NUFC writer Miles Starforth last week. While I was shivering watching Jarrow Roofing v Whitehaven alongside less than 20 people, he was on a flight to Moscow to cover the Toon’s Europa League game against Anzhi. Jealous? Not at all. Non-league football - down-to-earth, steeped in reality - beats the Premier League hype every time for me. Miles admittedly has had the chance to visit some wonderful places over the course of Newcastle’s Euro exploits. Yet we have non-league football to thank for that. Times are tough in local papers, and he wouldn’t have been able to cover those games without sponsorship, kindly provided initially by South Tyneside company UTS Engineering - backers of FA Vase winners Dunston - and then by Mick Jeffels and Kicks Leisure, the driving force behind Northern Alliance side Seaton Delaval.

My First Game

H

aving missed my chance to see Hebburn Town play the last time I was in the area, it’s fair to say I jumped at the chance of being a guest of the club for the game against Consett. My last ‘guest’ appearance at a football club was for my very own Middlesbrough, who brought me on the pitch at half-time to draw the raffle. I realised afterwards that I was probably only asked down to be mocked for my part in daytime soap opera Crossroads. I hoped this occasion would be different. Honorary life-time club admiral, Jason Cook (or whatever his title is) was visiting his mam, so it was a perfect chance for the two of us to stroll down and watch Hebburn gallop to a much deserved three points at home. Or so we hoped. I’d been wanting to see Hebburn play for ages, ever since I drove past the ground on the first day of film-

Ooooh Tony Stephenson...

ing the BBC2 sitcom. Thus far, fixtures had worked against me, but, being in the area for the Royal Televison Society awards, this weekend worked perfectly. We departed Jason’s mam’s house on the short walk down to the ground with enough time for Jas to give a quick ‘morale boost’ to the players in the dressing room. Meanwhile, I cowered in the background fearing a Fergie style ‘hairdryer’ for daring to step into the changing room before kick-off. I then took my place up in the grandstand as the announcer for the day. After 15 years of performing to audiences, and having voiced hundreds of documentaries, I still was not prepared for the frankly terrifying experience of trying to get the players’ names

Matchday Programme March 16 2013 Celtic Nation

- Neil Grainger right. But that was a mild fear in comparison to meeting and being violently tickled by the club chairman. I don’t think Jason and I have been violated like that since we watched Clarty Carol stripping in Swayze’s. I’d love to say that it was an enthralling first half, but to be honest, my highlight was probably Mick getting the drinks in. The second half, however, sprung into life and by the time Consett went one up, I was well oiled enough to make possibly the most underwhelmed goal announcement in the history of football. This unprofessionalism was eventually topped by a clearly over-excited “Come on

Hebburn” shouted down the mic once Stu Nicholson put in the equalising penalty. By this point I was purely playing up to impress the room, though I did start to get a tad worried that the club might get fined due to my lack of impartiality. As far as debuts go, it wasn’t the greatest. To agree with one passing fan at full time - Andy’s job is well and truly safe. So I departed the ground for an evening’s swanky champagne do, with a rather large head start and my first game under my belt. I think the last few years of Suarez and Tevez and the like had left me a little disillusioned with the modern game, so it was a breath of fresh air to see some proper football played and watched for the love of it. It was good to be around people who cared about their club and to watch a passionate chairman get excited and teach us all a few new words in the process. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a match this much.
