Hebburn Town FC 1912-2012 100 YEARS IN BRIEF
H
ebburn was very different back in 1912, the year the football club was formed. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men; the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour; and the town, eleven years earlier, had welcomed a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle. Reyrolle opened an engineering works, which initially employed just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak, Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures, and export to 70 countries being known worldwide. The company also started a football team, and, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history, he provided the sports ground on which team still plays on in the Northern League. The football team formed in 1912 were elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League. There had been plenty of football teams in the before 1912, most notably Hebburn Argyle – who kicked off in 1882 by Father Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derby games with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000. The Geordie town also had shinty and curling clubs and even an annual Highland Games which was organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society. This 1912 team progressed, and flourished in the 1930s, followed by a wartime season in the North
Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and then returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles as we were still known as, had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points. The Tyneside club then had 28 pretty indifferent seasons in the Wearside League, though they won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968. In 1988 the name was changed to Hebburn and an application was made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved, other clubs canvassed and then Hebburn got a lucky break when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding to play elsewhere. The team which had finished fifth in the Wearside League and then played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, before winning promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 before being relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. The club then won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000. In the 2011-12 season, Hebburn Town reached the FA Cup fourth qualifying round and a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places. This was the club’s furthest ever run in the competition and the Hornets also secured promotion to the Northern League Division 1 for their centenary year.

There can be few clubs with a more prestigious history than West Auckland with their renowned relationship with the ‘World Cup’ aka as the ‘Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy’. The cup was first won by West Auckland in 1909 and because they repeated the victory in 1911 they were allowed to keep the trophy.

The weather caused Saturday’s fixture against South Shields to be postponed and we must now try to stop our run of defeats tonight and pick up on our early season form. We were very unlucky not to bring anything back from Guisborough last Wednesday when we were beaten by the odd goal in seven, having clawed our way back from 2-0 with a fighting display – hopefully we can repeat this tonight against a very strong West Auckland team.

The Dugout A fter a great start to 2013 with a win over Billingham Synthonia we have crumbled of late and haven’t got a result since.
Tonight will be a really stern test as Peter always has his teams fired up and they play with their hearts on their sleeve and the togetherness West Auckland have is what every team should strive for, coupled with some outstanding performers in their team. This is something we can match; the togetherness this squad has shown, the character, the commitment and dedication is second to none. However, we have to dig out a result tonight any way we can, whether it’s a goal out of nothing, an own goal or a brilliant team goal, we will take it as long as it kick starts us again.
It’s not doom and gloom, far from it. People have to remember that we are a newly promoted side and we would have snapped your hand off to be tenth in the
league with 16 games to play. If we had won a couple then lost and then won again it would have gone unnoticed, but because we came out of the blocks flying and then stuttered people have been quick to point the finger at how bad results of late have been. However, the vast majority of these lads brought this club through promotion last season and the first season back was always going to be a uphill climb and finishing fourth from bottom was our aim. So a performance that carries on from last week’s second half at Guisborough will see the lads give themselves a great chance of kick starting the end of season run in. So, I extend a warm welcome to all from West Auckland Town. Enjoy the hospitality and the game.

points tally on the way to finishing in 6th. Last season he led West Auckland to the FA Vase Final at Wembley. Unfortunately West lost 2-0 to Dunston and suffered further heartache by being pipped at
the post for the League title and finishing runners up in the League Cup. It was still a tremendous season that shows the progress made in a short time.

West Auckland Town B efore Spain’s tikka takka there was Zidane’s headbutt, Gazza’s tears and Maradona’s hand. Before that came Paolo Rossi and North Korea, Cruyff ’s turn, Banks’s save and Bobby Moore with the Jules Rimet. But before all of that, before the Miracle of Bern and USA 1 England 0, there was a team of miners from County Durham beating Juventus in Turin.
Nobody knows how West Auckland Town ended up in the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy. Some think their invitation was meant for Woolwich Arsenal but got mixed up in the post. We do know that West Auckland paid their own way to Italy in 1909, and, once there, beat a team from Stuttgart 2-0 and the Swiss side FC Winterthur by the same score in the final. Two years later they were back, beating FC Zurich in the semi and thrashing Juventus 6-1 to win the cup outright. Juve have since won fifty-one major competitions. West Auckland went bankrupt and had to pawn their trophy to the landlady of a local hotel.
Unsurprisingly, the club make a big deal of their history. ‘Home of the first World Cup’ says the sign at the start of the village, and an image of the Lipton Trophy adorns both the entrance gate and the club badge. You pass through the gate to get to the turnstile, where you see a paper packaging plant and a housing estate, and an old man at a table selling raffle tickets and programmes. There’s an open-air terrace behind one goal and two covered stands on the far side of the pitch, the larger painted black, white and amber with ‘This is West Auckland’ written above the players’ tunnel. Toomey is back! W
hat a year it has been for John Toomey. After ending last season as Hebburn’s Club Man of the Year and being a vital part of the squad that clinched promotion to the first division, John ruptured all of the ligaments in his left ankle, dislocated that ankle, ruptured the membrane between his tibia and fibula and fractured his left tibia. “The initial feeling was just shock and disbelief that this had happened as for the most part of my playing days I have been relatively injury free, and it was not until after the operation that it started to sink in the extent of the damage I had done and the amount of time it would take to recover from,” the classy defender said at the time. “The relief came when pre-season started and I could get back to seeing the lads again and reflect on what a great season we had just had, and start looking forward to the season in front of the team.” Pins were removed at the start of August and the player was told he would face a recovery timescale of 12 months. But that didn’t deter John. Actively involved in the club as a coach during his recovery period, John then surprised everyone by declaring he was close to a returning to action this month – and then passed a fitness test ahead of the Guisborough Town match. Though having not expected the player to be fit this season, the signing form was still sitting at the club and so John was not included in the match squad for the visit to North Yorkshire. ‘’Although still being involved in and around the Hebburn team has been terrific and has been a very
good experience for me, I’ve really missed being able to play and getting out on the pitch with the lads,” said John ahead of the match against West Auckland Town which he hopes to be involved in. “The physiotherapy and training has been hard very frustrating and very lonely and mentally it has been quite tough, but I feel a stronger person for it and having been supporting the team off the pitch, I’m now excited to support them on the pitch. This period of time has been a great achievement for me and I’m over the moon to be able to get back out and play for the club, a manager and players I love.”

he South Tyneside footballing spirit would’ve warmed many a heart on Saturday. With Filtrona Park looking like a winter wonderland, I arrived just after 10am with my father and our snow shovels only to find the pitch lines all cleared. The hard workers were Paul Bennett and Seaham manager Mark Collingwood. A tremendous amount of credit needs to go to both lads – how many visiting managers would you see helping out like that? And Colly helped because he “just wanted to watch some football”. Caps well and truly doffed. Disappointingly, we weren’t able to get the game on, despite me and my dad helping Shields officials in clearing the pitch. A quick flurry of snow just before noon changed the rules and with the temperature then melting the snow, the five of us working couldn’t get rid of the water quick enough. Sadly, a number of home fans declined to join us – otherwise we would’ve had a match.
I
t seems to happen every year with all talk turning to how many fixtures have to be scheduled before the end of April. Spennymoor and Shildon, two teams with FA Vase ambitions, both have a gigantic backlog of games. While Hebburn and West Auckland have played 30 and 29 league games respectively, Spenny have managed to get through 24 and Shildon have played 23. There are 46 league games in a season, with cup games on top (though after last night’s game, should it beat the weekend snow, at least one of those two teams will have exited the Durham Cup). And next season we are still talking about playing the first game on August 10th or 17th, with the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round taking the other weekend. With some winter
snow we will very probably be in this situation next season, as we have been the last two seasons. Why not start the season on the first Saturday of August and then get three or four games in before the expected start of 17th August? Why not push the cups towards the end of the season instead of those games taking preference over the league (who would rather win the League Cup over winning the league?) It is rather simple. Some may point to having to cover expenses during early August, yet better to do that than playing three times per week during the final straight and impacting upon possible glory in the league or the Vase. An earlier start will possibly bring an advantage to Northern League clubs them playing competitive games before starting on the road to Wembley.

ebburn Town have been named as Team of the Year for 2012 at the Shields Gazette Sport Awards. 2012 was a superb year for sport on South Tyneside with the borough being represented at the London Olympics and Paralympics and with the Hornets following up on their FA Cup run by clinching promotion to the Northern League Division 1 and then becoming a firm fixture in the top ten. Gazette Sports Editor Ross Gregory said: “Hebburn enjoyed a brilliant 12 months, and were worthy winners of the Team of the Year award. “As always, we received a fantastic standard of entries in all categories, and Hebburn were shortlisted alongside Marsden Cricket Academy and Jarrow Vikings Rugby League Club. “All three had outstanding claims to the top prize, but the judges felt that the achievements of Hebburn on both a local and national stage, and the profile they’ve brought the town, meant they deserved the award.” As well as winning the top team prize, manager Paul Bennett was also shortlisted for the Coach of the Year prize. The form that led to the nomination and then to club secretary Tom Derrick collecting the award at a ceremony at Jarrow School included a phenomenal close to the 2011/12 season where Hebburn won 17 games out of 26 to clinch third place, with a number of those wins coming via a glut of goals. 2012 continued with the club in fine form back in the first division where Hebburn became the highest placed football team in the borough with a number
of brilliant displays, including a 4-1 win over Whitley Bay and thumping Billingham Town 5-2. The club also went on a long unbeaten away run which lasted until mid-October. All involved in the achievement were delighted to receive recognition. Tony Stephenson said he was “over the moon for the club” while Paul Gardiner said: “Congratulations to everyone involved. The award shows how far we’ve come – what a year it has been”. Paul Bennett congratulated his squad, putting the achievement down to “great team ethic amongst the Hebburn family”.
