environment HanesBrands has reduced carbon dioxide emissions from our production plants by 23 percent since 2007 (in part by reducing our energy consumption by 22 percent). By using ocean shipping and freight trains instead of trucking, we have reduced carbon emissions from transportation by more than 50 percent since 2008. Nearly all our products are made with 'water wise' cotton grown in the southeastern United States where average rainfall exceeds the needs of the cotton plant, reducing or eliminating the need for secondary irrigation. Almost one-fifth of our worldwide production, distribution and office space is recognized as environmentally sustainable, with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. HanesBrands apparel uses recycled polyester fiber generated from the equivalent of more than 50 million plastic bottles annually. Our T-shirts are overwhelmingly made with renewable energy. HanesBrands gets 32 percent of its worldwide energy needs from renewable sources.

community Employees in El Salvador and Nanjing, China participated in tree planting in 2012, including planting 1200 trees in El Playon National Park. Employees in the Dominican Republic spent 600+ volunteer hours renovating the Hogar Manos Divinas orphanage.
