In The Beginning There Was the Internet and The Rest is History

Once upon a time, the internet didn’t exist; there were no emails, no social media platforms and no online shopping. These were the days where people had to read newspapers and books to acquire there information but today, we have information at our fingertips via laptops and smart phones. In 2015, if a business is not available online, either through ecommerce or advertising, then it is guaranteed to not be a success as online traffic tops over one million users everyday. So where did it all begin? How did the internet develop to become such a lifeline for millions of people worldwide?

The internet has changed all of our lives in so many ways in such a short space of time, starting from the ARPANET and progressing to the smartphones used today. Web design has become a necessity in regards to the web; can you imagine not having animation, a choice of texts and background? A trip down memory lane will show how it all started and how it came to be a necessity to us today.

It all began in the Swingin’ Sixties when the internet was used to share information between ARPANET computers, mainly by scientists, doctors, the military and the government. The World Wide Web was brought to life in the early 1980’s and the very first program, the browser Mosaic, was made to suit all operating systems, like Windows and Mac, in the mid 1990’s. The internet in the 1990’s and early 2000’s was infamous with its dial-up process; the internet was connected via the phone line and was put through a modem which would dial up to the internet with a series of screeches and beeps. If you were a 90’s child, you would remember waiting for the internet to connect and your parents calling for you to get off the internet because they wanted to use the telephone.

At this time, the web wasn’t known for its amazing graphics, everything was extremely basic due to the fact that it would have extended the time of the connection process and this would have made the internet very unpopular indeed.

Ask any web design agency in London and they will tell you that as public interest in the internet increased, there were more browser updates to improve the experience of the World Wide Web; after Mosaic, Netscape browser was formed and the third generation of this browser saw the birth of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, a browser that we all recognize and love.

During this time, the .gif. Flash was introduced which allowed animation to be used on websites; this allowed web designers to explore different avenues in order to make sites more aesthetically pleasing on the eye.

Technology has grown and introduced the fourth generation to the internetadoring public. This update is the most technologically advanced to date and has introduced Javascript, an infinitely improved HTML edition which configures videos and is compatiable with all browsers that can be found on Windows and Mac, and XML. These updates have allowed businesses to rapidly expand their business due to the influx of custom and produce some truly outstanding website and ecommerce pages. What could possibly come next?
