Multiple Languages For A Website

Presenting a website that can be displayed in languages other than English is the only way to expand your business worldwide.

Whilst many countries have English as their first language there are far more that don’t and some of these can be very xenophobic and won’t read English even if they can. Your only chance of grabbing their interest is to translate your English pages into other languages.

Before you begin it should be pointed out that there is no point having too many translations unless you are prepared to spend a lot of money on translators and independent proof readers. https://www.neotericuk.co.uk/

The problem with literal translations is that they never work. We’ve all tried online translations where you paste a section from perhaps a newspaper into the translate box from perhaps Greek to English.

It may translate the words but it pays little attention to grammar and it makes you wonder whether no translation is better than a bad one.

If you want to give your potential customers the opportunity to read your site in their first language then try typing we are a web design company London into a box for translation into Greek. Then translate the Greek into another language and continue with a language of your choice another couple of times.

Whatever you have at the end just try translating it into English and like a game of Chinese whispers it will probably say something like my Granny is a goldfish.

As soon as we go into languages with different alphabets we start to get into difficulties and this is why you will find the sites with translations from English usually stick with similar European ones.

Your beautifully designed website may suddenly start to have difficulties fitting in a twenty letter German translation that in English was just three or four smaller words.

Arabic is an even bigger problem with letters moving right to left but if you want to include a target audience in that part of the world you’ll have to do it as they naturally read right to left.

Japanese and Chines will mean you’ll probably have to completely redesign your whole website.

Support for the above two languages that run vertically is provided by a recent version of Internet Explorer and Firefox, Opera and Chrome have all provided help in this area.



It happens all the time and it can be frustrating as well as loss making for certain businesses when you are in a foreign country and the websites are all in the language of that country with no opportunity to change.



The obvious point here is to allow the user to choose the language and not produce the situation where a traveller in Spain is deliberately inhibited from reading the site in English no matter how hard he tries.
