Just alcohol or bogans By Kerrie Martin
IT IS an inexcusable act that has left us all sick to the pit of our stomachs - the king-hit that kills - re-badged and better known now as the Coward Punch following pleas from the family of a young victim whose life was cut short by this despicable trend. Happy New Year to all from Nepean News. The Nepean News staff will be back on deck for our next issue, February 6 and all our usual segments will return including Legends of The Nepean, Heavens Above, Mike’s Pantry, Ask Nita, Finance Matters, Who Am I, History, Mark Geyer and Harpo’s Marks. Excessive alcohol and drug abuse are often deemed the fuel behind the offender, but perhaps it is time to take a deeper look into whether other substances are contributing to this sickening behaviour. As long as I’ve been going to pubs and clubs, blokes have always had punch-ups. And it wasn’t just in the pub scene - any NRL fan will remember the days when a bit of biff on the footy field was considered part of the action, and while it has understandably become unacceptable now, you’d have to agree that those blokes would punch on for a good ten minutes, yet they’d all live to tell the tale. My point is, although the rules have tightened up, blokes using their fists to settle a dispute is not something new. Two things, however, are noticeably new. The first is the rise in totally unprovoked attacks - this isn’t about settling a dispute. There is little or no disagreement prior to the Coward Punch. The second is that there isn’t even a “punch-up” situation; it’s one blow from the offender resulting in a
young life left in tatters - or finished completely in seconds. So what has changed over the last 20 years? Alcohol and drugs were both available back in the day of the punchup. A quick glance around and you can’t help but notice the amount of muscle-bound young fellas there are in the late-teens to late-twenties age bracket. Sure, these are highly healthconscious and educated times we live in, and the majority of “gym junkies” are doing the right thing and just looking after their bodies. But with anabolic steroids providing an inviting fast-track
towards muscledom - and they’re easy enough to come by - we’d be fools not to focus more attention on what role illegal steroids are playing in this aggression , wouldn’t we? You might be surprised to learn that offenders who deliver aggression-filled coma-inducing and fatal blows on innocent bystanders for no apparent reason are not even tested for steroid abuse. Acting Inspector Detective Michael Bourke from St Marys Police said that while he hasn’t noticed any particular rise in violent incidents, he does acknowledge that steroid intake amongst young males does appear to

be widespread of late. “We do charge people for possession under the Therapeutic Goods Act for illegal possession of steroids,” Det Bourke said. “That act is different to that which covers alcohol and illicit drugs, so testing (to see if it is present in someone’s blood stream ) isn’t common place. “But it does appear to be more prevalent lately. I think it is linked with image; young males like dancing at raves with no shirt on for example,” he said. Nepean Hospital’s Clinical Director Drug and Alcohol, Associate Professor Martin Weltman said steroid intake did appear more prevalent. “The use of steroids within the local community appears to be increasingly common. Patients rarely present to hospital with steroid abuse as their primary concern, however steroids may be a factor contributing to their health concern,” Prof Weltman said. And while steroids may seem an attractive alternative to putting in the hard yards to build muscle fast, the side affects and long-term affects are just not worth it. “Adverse effects of steroid-use include neuropsychiatric conditions, aggressive behaviour and a proneness to temperamental outbursts. Steroid use can also aggravate underlying psychiatric disorders.
“Long term steroid use can lead to liver tumours and, in males, testicular atrophy, infertility, and a loss of sexual prowess,” he said. Statistics regarding the increase of steroid use was not available from Local District Health as there is no routine testing and test results are not detained at the hospital. “Patients presenting to hospital are not routinely drug tested, however drug tests may be requested by Police when accompanying patients,” Prof Weltman said. “In these cases, a urine sample will be taken and sent to an independent facility for testing. Test results are not immediately available and once complete are provided directly to Police and not the hospital.” Penrith MP Stuart Ayres agreed that other contributing factors were likely in episodes of violence. “Alcohol is likely not to be the only contributing factor to violence, and drug use is a concern to me. The NSW Government has already taken action to tackle drug use, including sniffer dogs on trains, and the government will consider specific suggestions surrounding drug use as it implements measures to tackle violence,” Mr Ayres said. Do you think steroid usage should be routinely tested following violent incidents and charges laid on those who have illegally used them? Australia Day at The Lakes CHART-TOPPING pop artist and DJ Havana Brown is the mystery guest performer who will headline Penrith’s Australia Day at the Lakes. Havana – who has sold over 2.5 million singles worldwide – will be the star attraction of three-plus hours of free entertainment on Sunday, 26 January. She will take to the stage prior to a spectacular water-based fireworks display. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said it was a coup to secure such talent for the city’s free Australia Day event. “She has toured with Britney Spears, Rihanna and Lady Gaga and her debut single topped 1 million sales in the US and reached Triple Platinum in Australia,” Cr Fowler said. “We are extremely lucky that such a performer will take top billing at our Australia Day celebration.” Havana will be joined at the event by Melbourneborn dance/pop diva Zoe Badwi, who has had club hits ‘Release Me’ and ‘Freefallin’. Singer songwriter trio Mark Travers, Rose Carleo and the Voice 2013’s Simon Meli will also perform Aussie Rock classics on the day. There will be something for all ages at the free event. For the young and young-at-heart, Despicable Me 2 characters will entertain and former yellow Wiggle Greg Page will lead an adventure through Butterscotch’s Playground. “This is truly a world-class event, right on your doorstep,” Cr Fowler said. “This event will bring out the Aussie spirit in
everyone – the young and the old. So come and ignite your national pride.” Festivities will begin at Penrith Council Chambers with a citizenship ceremony to welcome new Australians to the region. Australia Day Ambassador Paralympian Erik Horrie will also attend the celebrations. The day is sponsored by Australia Day Council
of NSW, Blue Mountains Bus Company, Penrith City Gazette, Penrith Press, Vintage FM, The Western Weekender, Uphire, Woolworths and NSW Communities, Sport and Recreation. Penrith’s Australia Day at the Lakes will kick-off at Penrith Lakes at 6pm. Gates will open at 5.30pm. For more information go to http://penrithcity.nsw. gov.au/ausday/

Canoe slalom champion Jessica Fox and Penrith City Mayor Ross Fowler OAM launched the library summer membership drive recently, and they’re hoping you’ll do just that. Cr Fowler said about half of Penrith City residents are library members. ``We are hoping to boost those numbers with our summer membership drive,’’ he said. ``Joining the library is free, and if you sign up this summer you’ll get a free library bag as well as go in the draw to win an iPad, a pass to Penrith Whitewater Stadium, or theatre tickets. ``Our youngest new members will also get a surprise gift.’’ 2013 Canoe slalom world champion and Olympic silver medallist Jessica Fox has been a member since 2004. DENTAL disease is a much overlooked, but very important aspect of pet health care. 85% of pets over the age of three years have dental problems that need treatment. Bad breath is not normal, it is a sign of dental disease. Many people feel if their pets are still eating, their teeth can’t be too bad. Unfortunately, this is
Healthy teeth
not the case. Most pets will continue to eat well despite very advanced dental disease and significant pain! Dental disease is a problem that gets worse over time. Ignoring it will not make it go away! Untreated dental disease can lead to serious health problems, such as kidney and heart disease. Luckily, dental disease is something that can be treated! The dental service offered by our hospitals is of the highest standard and includes: • A wellness blood screen which assesses the function of your pets’ liver and kidneys, as well as checking blood glucose and protein levels. Early detection of health problems
Disease teeth
allows us to manage them far more effectively. • A urine screen, which can lead to early detection of diabetes, kidney disease, prostate problems and urinary tract infections. • Fully monitored general anaesthesia with the latest anaesthetic monitoring equipment allowing a safer experience for your pet, including heart and respiratory rate, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, ECG and blood pressure. • Intravenous fluids, allowing better control of blood pressure and faster recovery. • Dental x-rays, allowing visualisation of the roots of the teeth
and the jaw. Even healthy looking teeth can sometimes have unhealthy roots that need attention! • Careful extraction of loose or infected teeth with specialised equipment. • Ultrasonic scaling of all teeth to remove calculus. • Polishing to smooth the surface of the teeth to discourage plaque attachment. Your pet will go home with pain relief and a plan for home care to ensure their teeth remain healthy. Just like us, tooth brushing daily is the recommended to keep teeth healthy. Make 2014 the year that counts By Kerrie Martin
WELL here we are at the beginning of 2014; a new year with new goals and news horizons standing before us. Why not make 2014 the year you make a difference? There’s loads of local clubs and charities that you can join and make a difference in another person’s life. Under The Trade Secret Bridge is a local charity focused on ensuring our local homeless get a home cooked meal. Lana and Roger Borg spend their time and money cooking and distributing meals for those who’d otherwise go hungry. But they could do with some help, just recently some people who arrived late for a feed missed out so more helpers and donations of food items would be greatly appreciated and help ensure nobody goes without a hearty meal. Join their group on facebook: Under The Trade Secret Bridge and pledge to help. Alternatively you can contact Lana at Vintage FM on 4721 5755. The Ross Hutchison Foundation is always about and about helping those in need. Give Rossco a call to find out what you could do to support his many charities on 4721 2620. How about volunteering at the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Nepean Hospital and help make a difference to families dealing with sick kids? Contact Deana Gibbons, the Family Room Coordinator on deanag@rmhwestmead.org.au or 47 342455.
Max’s Mum was able to spend his first few weeks close by, thanks to Ronald McDonald House.
Or how about joining one of the great local social clubs who focus on helping other such as the Lions Club or Rotary? For Lions Club contact Alan Bideleux on 0409 220 544 or abideleux@gmail.com, for Rotary contact Chris Miller on O417 409 720. Make this year count! THE G SPOT IS it only me or have people noticed the (Jaws music please) the New Year’s Resolution walkers! Run for your lives, they are taking up our streets, roads, footpaths and even parks, they are everywhere, don’t feed after dark or add water. Yes folks these are the people that you never see all year round, they are like hermit crabs all year and then suddenly…… The one thing I also notice is the different types of walkers, such as the mixed matched walker- The mixed match walker is a person who has never bought fitness gear in their life and it appears that they have replaced an engine block prior to the walk. The determined walker- This is a person that has the look of pain on their face, like they are passing a large object, however is walking slower than a snail. There’s a lot of arm pumping going on but not much
distance happening. The I don’t give a rat’s bum walker- This is a walker that proceeds to kick every stone and meander like they are heading to work or something. The sweaty walker- This is a walker that looks like they have swum 10 laps and then jumped out for the evening walk, the sweat beads are pouring out and the t-shirt looks like the last scene of rocky when he is yelling out for his wife Adrian. The male bum crack walker- This is a walker that feels the need to wear shorts with no elastic and they are presenting a crack bigger than a plumber’s. The male harry high pants- This is a walker who wears their shorts so high it looks like they need an operation to get them off. The colour co-ordinated walkerThank god for these ladies, with matching shoes, socks, tops and of
With Gina Field, Nepean Regional Security
course the Lycra pants, with, yes folks, the matching thin colour stripe down the side of the pants. (I hear the angels sing). And of course the super model walker, this is a walker who attends the beautician to have their hair and make-up done to take the daily walk, and doesn’t really care if they are getting fit as long as 20 thousand car horns beep, they are happy. Now I know you are asking what has all of this crap got to do with security, but alas my dear readers it has, because I am going to give you walking security tips. So just keep ya knickers on! Firstly - Tell people where you are walking, so when you are not back in 48 hours they know where to come looking and cash in on your life insurance as well. We know how much you love Dolly Parton, but having her
screaming at 70 thousand decibels in ear phones is not really good, considering you won’t hear anything or anyone around you. Walk in groups- so society not only has to put up with one of you on the street but 15. (Yippee) Facebook- checking in and taking selfie’s on every street corner is not really needed, because to be quite frank we don’t really care that you have decided to walk for two weeks only into the new year, and it also takes your attention ( what you span you may have) away from what you are actually doing. So there you have it the NYRW ( New Year’s Resolution Walker) not for the faint hearted folks, this is a trend that you must approach with fear and caution as it only happens at 12.01 on the 01/01 of the New Year - miss the boat and you have to wait another 12 months!

Smashing victories kick the year off

AN Australian Indoor Titles win kicked off 2014 in grand style for four local hockey players. Tegan Risk, Jemma Laverty and sisters Erin and Caitlin Burns helped the NSW Under 21 Womens Team to the ultimate success when they participated in the National Indoor titles at Illawarra Stadium Woolongong last week. Tegan Risk co-captained the team for the second year in a row and played an integral part in the team’s success; setting up several goals from
well-executed midfield passes that allowed team members to finish off with goals. Jemma Laverty in goals was safe and kept solidly over the five days of the tournament. Playing in the round games, NSW in their first game drew with WA 2-all with Caitlin Burns finishing off one of the goals. Against Vic the girls picked up with a 5 - 1 win with Tegan and Erin Burns adding a goal a piece. The game against QLD was a whitewash, resulting in an 8-nil drubbing. Tegan scored and assisted her co captain with passes through to Erin
and Caitlin and other team members to finish off. Erin 1 Caitlin 2. Losing the second last game against ACT (only just) 3-2 meant that NSW had to play WA in the semi final while ACT went through to the final. A 3 -1 win against WA and the girls made the final for the second year in a row, but unlike last year when the game went to penalty stroke shoot out, Tegan and the girls made sure it was not going to happen again defeating ACT 3 - 1. The Under 21 Mens Championships were also played over the five days and it turned out a
blues bonanza with the boys winning as well. It did not end there for NSW as the Open Women with super talent Vanessa Kristaly in the team the week prior also won, as did the Open Men. Nepean Hockey Secretary and the Technical Officer appointed by Hockey Australia, Cheryl Dollin had duty at the open tournament and was in charge of the U21 tournament, assisted by Pam Nelson at the Opens Tournament and Ian Kennedy and Jenifer Burns (mother of Caitlin and Erin) carried out technical duties at the Under 21 event.

Magnificent seven By Mark Geyer
Sale Starts 13th January 2014 Sale Ends 31st January 2014
Unit 4, 116 Batt St, Penrith
WITH the unexpected signing last week of the hulking Jamal Idris, you would have to go all the way back to 1988 to find a better recruiting drive at the foot of the mountains. Penrith have now signed seven players for this upcoming season that are all legitimate first-graders. Jamie Soward, Peter Wallace, Tyrone Peachey, Brent Kite, Elijah Taylor, and Kevin Naiqama will join Idris at the Panthers this season instantly making Ivan Clearly’s men legitimate top 8 chances. Last year’s recruitment at Penrith was an unexpected highlight with the likes of Segyaro, Brown, Whare, Manu and John all adding plenty. Couple these blokes with the newbies and the boys who have been here for a while, and obviously Panther fans have to start feeling giddy. Well done to Gus Gould and coach Cleary, the locals who absolutely love their team now have seven new reasons to scream and shout this season at Centrebet Stadium. Happy new year to everyone and see you when Nepean News resumes on February 6 with all our usual segments and columnists (including me!).
