Celebrating Badgerys Creek Local Woman of the Year

TANYA Davies MP, Member for Badgerys Creek, hosted a morning tea this week to celebrate the 2024 Badgerys Creek Local Woman of the Year, Leisa McGivern OAM.

Leisa was awarded the honour by Mrs Davies in recognition of her extraordinary service to children as a foster carer over the last 24 years, in which she has fostered more than 60 children, many of whom she is still in contact with.

Mrs Davies stated, “I’m so proud to celebrate and commend a woman of Leisa’s character and values. She has provided babies and children a safe and loving home and a wonderful start to life.”

In attendance at the morning tea was Leisa’s daughter Amanda McGivern, who stated that her mother “has the biggest heart.”

Also in attendance was Renee Klippert, Leisa’s friend of 15 years who she met through foster caring and who is Co-Chair of Metwest, which is a part of the Carer Reference Group of My Forever Family NSW. Renee stated that “there are a lot of people struggling, some moreso than others, and we need to open our homes to the vulnerable people. There’s a lot of support for anyone wanting to consider foster caring through agencies and NonGovernment Organisations such as Anglicare.”

Leisa shared that she believes that every child

needs ‘love to grow’. She stated, “my role is to make sure that these children have a safe, loving home, whilst awaiting their ‘forever family’.”

Leisa is also a mother to her own 5 children.

True to her nature, Leisa encourages anyone curious about caring to look into it. “There are plenty of children in need of a place to stay,” she stated.

One of the organisations Leisa recommended to those looking to assist, and to those requiring assistance, is Anglicare Telopea, which can be contacted on 02 9890 6800.

“On behalf of the community of Badgerys Creek, I sincerely thank Leisa and her family for giving a safe, loving and nurturing home-life to many vulnerable babies and children over many years. I congratulate her on this well-deserved award,” concluded Mrs Davies.

Have your say on the future use of Ron Mulock Oval

PENRITH City Council is inviting feedback from the community about the use of Ron Mulock Oval in Thornton. Ron Mulock Oval serves as a central green space with residents enjoying the oval for personal exercise, walking their dog, playing sports and socialising with family and friends.

Penrith Mayor Todd Carney welcomed the opportunity to engage with the community to hear directly from residents and visitors what the needs are for Ron Mulock Oval.

“Ron Mulock Oval is a well-loved and important space in Thornton. We want to hear from residents what they love about Ron Mulock Oval but also what ideas they have for how we can make it a better space for the community,’’ said Cr Carney.

“Your feedback is a valuable way to let Council know your ideas which you can do in person by speaking with Council staff at a series of pop-up community consultation sessions or by participating in a short online survey.’’

“We want Ron Mulock Oval to be a space for everyone in the community to enjoy, so I encourage you to make your voice heard.’’

Residents are invited to participate by:

• Completing an online survey open now until 5 May at yoursaypenrith.com.au/ron-mulock-oval

• Attending a pop-up community consultation session on the following dates:

• Saturday 6 April, 10am-12pm at Ron Mulock Playground (near BBQ area)

• Thursday 11 April, 7.30am-9.30am at Thornton Community Centre

• Wednesday 17 April, 5pm-7pm at Thornton Community Centre

Community Anzac Day Service to return to Emu Plains

THE Federal Member for Lindsay, Melissa McIntosh MP, has been working alongside local residents and community organisations to bring back the much-loved community ANZAC Day Service to Emu Plains.

The service was previously run by residents, but had to stop a few years ago due to the increasing administrative burden of holding public events, including public liability insurance.

A small group of locals still gathered at the Melrose Park Cenotaph each year to pay their respects, and there has been a groundswell of community support to bring the service back.

“Along with organisations including the City of Penrith RSL subBranch, the National Servicemen’s Association (NASHOS), the Emu Plains Lions Club, the Nepean District Historical Society, the Emu Plains Girl Guides, Nepean Valley Trefoil Guild and Emu Plains Anglican Church, we have been working hard to return the service to Emu Plains,” said Mrs McIntosh.

“We had a few hurdles to jump over, but I am pleased we now have public liability insurance covered. That was the biggest issue to ensure the service could take place.

“Recently, Penrith Council approved our traffic management plan, so we now have the green light to make this beautiful service happen. The Emu Plains Community ANZAC Service has been a true grassroots community event that is so meaningful to local families. We want to keep it community-focused,

as that is what makes it so special in honouring our veterans, who gave the greatest sacrifice, and current serving defence personnel.

“We have a really dedicated group of locals, from people organising the service, to residents offering rosemary and their home on the day. We are also very grateful for the support of Dukes Estate Agents in Emu Plains, who are sponsoring the hire of the PA system and chairs. Everyone is working together in the true spirit of community.”

Speaking on the Emu Plains Community ANZAC Service, Penrith RSL sub-Branch Secretary Peter Ward said, “The City of Penrith subBranch are extremely happy to be involved on the local committee. We have been working hard to ensure all proper protocols are followed in recognition of our veterans, past and present, in particular those who have paid the supreme sacrifice.”

The Emu Plains Community ANZAC Day Service will be held

at 11am on ANZAC Day, 25th of April, at the Emu Plains War Memorial (Melrose Cenotaph) at Lions Park, Emu Plains. RSVP isn’t essential, but the organisers would be grateful to hear from community members who want to attend, to get an idea of numbers, this being the first service in Emu Plains for a few years.

MyPlace Junior League Volunteer of the Month

PANTHERS is delighted to launch the MyPlace Junior League Volunteer of the Month initiative, recognising the tireless work thousands of volunteers do each and every week within community Rugby League clubs in Western Sydney.

Over 8,500 players have already registered to play in the Penrith Junior League competition, which wouldn’t be possible without the passionate support of over 4,000 team coaches, trainers, managers and club volunteers who will make sure more than 600 teams can take the field each week this season.

Each month between March and August the Panthers Junior League community will be able to vote for a volunteer who has gone above and beyond to promote Rugby League participation and engagement or has helped their club flourish.

Panthers Principal Partner MyPlace will generously provide each monthly Junior League Volunteer of the Month winner two tickets to the Allam Homes Chairman’s Club, the best way to watch the Undisputed Premiers at BlueBet Stadium.

The six monthly winners will be selected by representatives of Panthers Juniors, Penrith Panthers and MyPlace. Additionally, the monthly winners will become the six nominees in line to win the prestigious Ian Robinson

Medal, awarded to the volunteer of the year at the Panthers Juniors 2024 Presentation Night. The home club of the 2024 Ian Robinson Medallist will also receive a $2,500 credit to use on a MyPlace

product or service.

Submissions for the March MyPlace Volunteer of the Month are now open, and can be completed below. Nominations will close on Friday 5 April, 2024.

Fast-track on expansion of public preschools

MEMBER for Londonderry, Deputy Premier Prue Car says the NSW Government is fast tracking the largest expansion of public preschools in the state’s history by cutting red tape to deliver 100 preschools co-located with public primary schools by 2027.

“For years, key infrastructure projects particularly across Western Sydney have been unnecessarily delayed due to inefficiencies in the planning system accrued under the former Government,” Ms Car said in a statement.

“To address this, the Government will change the Transport and Infrastructure State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) permitting new preschool buildings or preschools in existing buildings under complying development provisions.

“Changes to this SEPP will permit the development of new preschool buildings, or allow preschools to operate in existing buildings at all NSW public schools without the need for development applications.

“This will speed up the delivery of new preschools for families desperately in need by up to eight months.

“These changes will enable the Department of Education to phase the delivery of 100 new preschools over the next three years, without concerns over delays through the planning process.”

It comes as the NSW Government plans new public preschools including 51 across Sydney, with

49 of those in Western Sydney, South-West Sydney and North-West Sydney.

“This historic $769 million investment in public preschools is part of the NSW Labor Government’s long-term plan to support young families,” Ms Car said.

“The NSW Government has also committed $60 million to build and upgrade 50 preschools at nongovernment schools in areas of greatest need and has provided $17 million to support capital works for early childhood services in areas of need.

“This is along with $29.4 million in funding to expand the number of early childhood workers in NSW through a major scholarship program, which continues to see a record number of applications.

“All children deserve access to high quality early learning. Our record investment to double the number of public preschools in the state is an important step towards growing access to early education across the state. We are cutting red tape as part of our plan to deliver this historic expansion of public preschools to the families of NSW.”

Urban Property Group takes home two National 2024 UDIA Awards for Excellence

URBAN Property Group has taken home another two awards with its wins at last week’s 2024 the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s (UDIA) National Awards for Excellence at a Gala Dinner in Melbourne. These latest accolades come after first winning the state level UDIA New South Wales awards last year. Urban Property Group’s visionary CEO Patrick Elias received the Young Leaders’ Award and Navali, a premium mixed-use development in Penrith, was crowned the winner of Apartments (Mid-Rise), against the other states.

These two award wins demonstrate not only Urban Property Group’s quality leadership, as well as quality projects, but also that quality and affordability do not need to be mutually exclusive, as well as the strength of the New South Wales property sector. Urban Property Group has long shown leadership in creating high-quality spaces, by providing buyers with 10-year Latent Defects Insurance in an Australianfirst, being one of the first developers

in Australia to receive an as-built BTI rating from KPMG Origins, an independent assessor of “trustworthy buildings,” as well as having received a New South Wales Governmentendorsed iCIRT rating.

Navali, a conveniently located Penrith 10-storey mixed-use development received top honours for Apartments (Mid-Rise). Part of our Sheffield Quarter development, which is made up of 541 apartments, Navali provides high-quality, yet

affordable homes, including some National Disability Insurance Scheme apartments, affordable housing, and private market housing. Navali reached Practical Completion in 2022, featuring resident facilities including a rooftop garden, communal space, kitchen, garden, and children’s play areas. In addition to Navali’s latest award win, it was also crowned as the winner of the 2022 Urban Taskforce Mid-Rise Development Award.

Patrick Elias, CEO of Urban

Property Group, was awarded as the winner of the Young Leaders’ Award in recognition of his visionary thinking, strategic mindset and focus on innovation. Patrick was also acknowledged for putting his team first, and for fostering a culture of collaboration and mutual respect.

Patrick Elias, Chief Executive Officer of Urban Property Group said, “It’s an incredible honour for Urban Property Group to have taken home two national UDIA awards on top of our state wins, for both my Young Leaders’ Award and for Apartments (Mid-Rise) for our Penrith development Navali. I’m truly grateful for this recognition and could not be prouder of what our team has achieved.”

“These awards are also reminders of how vital our work is in creating high-quality, yet affordable homes to assist with tackling the housing challenges we face in Australia. We are not just building properties, we are creating homes where people can thrive. In today’s housing crisis, that mission feels more important than ever.”

Traffic conditions improved along Great Western Highway

DRIVERS will benefit from better traffic flow and safer conditions along the Great Western Highway in Emu Plains, with an upgrade to the road now complete.

The upgrade included the construction of a new four-way intersection at the Great Western Highway and River Road, installation of new traffic lights, a dedicated lefthand turn lane from the highway into River Road, dedicated left and righthand turn lanes into Lamrock Street, road surfacing, new line marking, and drainage improvements.

Lamrock Street has also been widened and a dedicated left-hand turn lane constructed as part of the project.

Penrith Mayor Todd Carney said the work complemented the upgrade to River Road which was completed last year.

“These road changes will help to ease traffic congestion in the area by improving traffic flow along the Great Western Highway for drivers coming in and out of Emu Plains,” Cr Carney said.

“It will also make it much easier for residents and visitors who want to enjoy Regatta Park and the Nepean River.”

“Thank you to the NSW and

Australian Governments, and the community for their support while this much-needed upgrade was underway.”

This milestone follows the completion of stage one of the Regatta Park project last year, which included an adventure playspace, multi-use lawn space, picnic and BBQ areas, new pathways to the foreshore, over-water viewing platforms, kayak launch areas, the initial section of the 90-space car park, and the River Road realignment.

The Regatta Park project is jointly funded with $19.2 million from Council and $15 million from the Australian and New South Wales governments as part of the Western Parkland City Liveability Program which is a key commitment in the Western Sydney City Deal.

Federal Member for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh said it was pleasing to see this project come to fruition for our community to enjoy, from the park space to better traffic flow.

“I want to thank our community for

their patience during construction,” McIntosh said.

Karen McKeown OAM MP for Penrith said the completion of this intersection will alleviate the traffic issues that can back up into Penrith.

“It is welcomed by all those commuters that travel the Great Western Highway,” Ms McKeown said.

Stage two of the Regatta Park project is expected to be open in mid2024.

Youth Mental Health Walk

IN 2023, Chris Barton walked from the Three Sisters, Katoomba to Manly Beach, trekking 128 kilometres in just 24 hours to raise money for the charity ‘Batyr’, which delivers mental health programs run by young people, for young people.

Chris was also hoping his efforts would spark a broader conversation about mental health across the community, to help reduce stigma.

Fast forward to 2024 and Chris is setting off on a new challenge, walking for 30 hours non-stop around the Blacktown International Sports Park Athletic track, covering a distance of 200km.

Chris has turned the walk into a fun ‘Youth Mental Health Walk’ event, and is encouraging members of the Sydney community to join in.

“I will be walking non-stop around the athletic track, pushing myself to my absolute physical and mental limits. I hope to be joined by up to 500 individuals, groups and community groups, who will walk some or all of the walk with me,” said Chris.

“In Australia, 1 in 5 young people aged 12-17, and 1 in 4 young people aged 16-24, struggle with mental health challenges, such as anxiety and depression. Suicide is the leading cause of death for young Australians aged 16-24 and this is not acceptable, as losing just one young person to suicide is too many.

“This isn’t just a walk, it’s a movement working towards a resilience revolution for young people.

“I’ve chosen to partner with BREED Australia, a western Sydney charity

that will receive 100% of all funds raised through this event, to put into their School and Community Learning Programs (Emotional Intelligence, Resilience and Goal Achievement), working with schools and community groups in western Sydney.”

The walk will start at 10:00am on Saturday April 6th and finish at 3:00pm on Sunday April 7th. Blacktown International Sports Park (BISP) Athletic Stadium, Eastern Road, Rooty Hill. Free parking available on-site. Join in at any time, for any distance.

Reaching out to all Military Veterans

THE Veterans’ Wellbeing Program is again reaching out to military Veterans in our wider Nepean area to encourage participation and involvement in chosen activities within the Program. Veterans of all ages are very welcome to familiarise with the Program (see April’s schedule below) and phone or email us (02 9833 4711 and vietvet@ vvaastmarys.org.au) for more information or to become involved.

Today, many ex-service organisations (ESO’s), together with the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), are all concerned to provide opportunities for veterans – serving and ex-service – to enhance their

own wellbeing as well as that of their family. In St Marys, the local RSL sub-Branch has paired with the Outpost Veterans Support Centre, and is working hard to meet the needs of local veterans and their family. Both of these ESO’s are doing this by offering services that veterans can access with ease and thereby create new friends with other like-minded veterans and in a safe environment. Families of veterans are also a focus for services offered by these organisations.

Camaraderie through involvement within these ESO’s is often a major factor in helping veterans to assimilate more effectively into the local community. Veterans seeking assistance from DVA for conditions that have arisen/occurred due to their military occupation (Regular or Reserve) can access free

advocacy service via the Outpost Veterans Centre. In cases of expressed financial need for a veteran or family, the RSL sub-Branch or the Veterans Centre may be able to assist.

The Veterans’ Wellbeing Program is also one of the services available via these ESO’s and is a most tangible way to provide support to veterans and family. The range, variety and scheduling of the Program’s activities is open to suggestions for change and variation. Enquiries are welcome at either ESO and, dependant of sufficient interest, suggestions will be given serious consideration.

As a veteran, you and your family can only benefit from involvement. We welcome your interest in the Program.

TLEFT OF FIELD

O me, Easter is almost like the calling of the wild for boneheads. Let’s cram 75 people into a car, hit the carpark called the M1 for 15 hours, and go to an Airbnb for the long weekend for what they consider a relaxing holiday. The Airbnb only has 4 bedrooms but hey, they make it work; sleeping with Aunt Myrtle isn’t so bad for three nights is it? Look at the bright side, with that many family members it works out to be about $7.25 per night, who cares if you need to wait 45 minutes for the toilet and shower, this what family do ( eye roll emoji).

Not to forget the snotty kids in the back seat, two dogs licking the windows, and a set of divorcees that really hate each other. Little miss has 45 bags of clothes because she doesn’t know what to wear to a beach house. Dad always drives past 10 petrol

Which retailer gives me the best Solar feed-in or the lowest price of electricity?

stations because according to his records, the one in the back of whoop whoop is 2 cents cheaper and he will save a whole 12 cents there.

The car tyres are sitting at 27 PSI because of the weight, and the aircon has to be left off, on a 43 degree day or the car won’t get up the hills on the motorway.

Once at the “ relaxing site” you then process the eating patterns of the family, (yep it is probably easier to organise the robbing of the Reserve Bank, but hey it’s family and you love them right?) So you have the vegans, the vegetarians, the carnivores, the fasters, the dieters and of course the “ we are not sharing the hotplate when you have cooked meat on it” people and so on and so forth.

They arrived at 4 pm and by 6 pm, 15 family members are punching on over the kitchen rules

and the eating habits, which then means 7 people are no longer talking to each other and the silent treatments have begun. (Great holiday!). Eventually, the BBQ ends up in the water, and they all fend for themselves.

Then the sleeping patterns start, okay Mum and Dad in the backroom, and the 4am pilates meditating special in the front room.

The two beautiful kids kick a soccer ball straight through a window and the $7.25 nightly fee has just grown to $3075 – for the non-refundable bond.

After the most rewarding 2 days, 1 hour and 27 seconds, but who’s counting, they all pile back into the car and head back to rejoin life as they know it. And there you have it, the bonehead Easter getaway. I am guessing they can’t wait to do it all next year!

different rates, in different areas at different times. One common denominator is that electricity is expensive, it has increased far more than inflation over the past couple of years, and despite what the pollies have been telling us, it is not going to come down.

Retail power companies buy their power on the electrical wholesale market, and they sell it to us. Not much to add to it, just mark it up and sell it.

They don’t look after the poles and wires; they buy and sell electricity. They don’t add different flavours to it, nor do they make it look any different during the transition from wholesale to retail. They often change the cost to you without really making it to

obvious, you drop off a plan and revert to a ‘basic’ plan or such that they have.

We then receive a bill that has crept higher and as there is a lot of information on it, we just pay it.

Sound familiar? Well, there have been some changes recently with the Australian Energy Regulator forcing retailers to now advertise on the front page of bills that they may have better rates available, just have to ask. Even better, they tell us how much we could save by checking with them! The Government has also come to the party by setting up an energy comparison website that makes comparing your electricity plan easy, with an easy-to-read list of the best retailer to suit you, in your area, with your actual usage. Holiday Travel with Your Pet: Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip

AS the school break rolls around again and holiday plans take shape, many families face a common dilemma: what to do with their beloved pets. Whilst leaving them at a boarding facility or arranging for a pet sitter are viable options, more and more pet owners are opting to bring their furry companions along for the adventure. However, embarking on a holiday with your pet requires careful planning and consideration to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Before hitting the road or booking that petfriendly accommodation, there are a few essential steps every pet owner should take to prepare for

the journey ahead. First and foremost, make sure your pet is up to date on vaccinations, including the kennel cough vaccine for dogs. Additionally, maintain regular heartworm, flea, and tick prevention treatments to protect your pet from common pests and diseases.

Ensuring that your pet’s microchip details are current and that they are wearing a collar with identification tags is crucial in case they wander off during your travels. Researching your destination is equally important, as it allows you to familiarise yourself with local regulations, hazards, and nearby veterinary services. Look for accommodation with secure fencing and access to dog-friendly areas such as beaches and parks to keep your pet entertained and comfortable throughout your stay.

Preparing your pet for car travel is another essential aspect of holidaying with your furry friend. If your pet experiences anxiety or discomfort during car rides, gradually familiarise them to the experience by starting with short trips and providing plenty of positive reinforcement. Avoid feeding your pet for several hours before travel, plan regular breaks for them to stretch their legs and hydrate, and ensure proper ventilation in the vehicle to keep them cool and comfortable.

When traveling by car, it’s crucial to restrain your pet to ensure their safety and prevent distractions for the driver. Use secure carriers or seat belt harnesses

designed for pets, and never allow them to roam freely inside the vehicle. Additionally, avoid letting your pet stick their head out of the window, as this poses a risk of injury, particularly to their eyes.

By following these tips and taking proactive measures to prepare your pet for holiday travel, you can enjoy a safe and stress-free adventure together. Whether you’re exploring new destinations or simply enjoying a change of scenery closer to home, bringing your pet along can enhance the overall experience and create lasting memories for you and your furry companion.

So, pack your bags, buckle up, and get ready for a holiday filled with fun, relaxation, and quality time with your beloved pet. Happy travels!

The galaxy is calling you to Westfield Penrith

Star Wars fans of all ages will be over the moon with unmissable ‘Spark Excitement’ activations and experiences: the Force is about to be very strong at Westfield destinations across Australia and New Zealand. To celebrate the arrival of Star Wars to Westfield destinations, fans come together for a photo at the top of Westfield Sydney Tower on the SKYWALK observation platform.

17,115 days ago, Star Wars: A New Hope first hit screens and the Star Wars universe was born. Coincidentally, 17,115 is just enough Galactic credits to pay for transport from Tatooine to Alderaan. Eerie synchronicities aside, today is especially significant for fans in Australia and New Zealand as Westfield and Disney ‘Spark Excitement’ with Star Wars in Westfield destinations with an unforgettable collaboration.

‘Spark Excitement’ with Star Wars promises to transport customers and fans to a galaxy far, far away, with unmissable experiences, activities and events landing in Westfield destinations; including Lightsaber Training sessions, a chance to win one of ten family holidays to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland Resort in California, and A Star Wars Experience created exclusively for Westfield.

All of the planned activities are designed to offer Westfield customers and Star Wars fans authentic ways to connect with the beloved franchise.

To launch the out-of-this-world campaign, Australian comedian, actor and Star Wars fan Joel Creasey was joined by other Star Wars fans to mark the occasion with a Lightsaber ribbon cutting at Westfield Sydney and an unforgettable fan photo on the observation platform at the top of Sydney Tower Eye, shot by helicopter.

Joel Creasey said: “It’s beyond exciting to be celebrating the arrival of Star Wars at Westfield! I’m a proud lifelong fan of the greatest franchise in the galaxy, and my parents even met as extras on the set of ‘The Empire Strikes Back’.

Their love of the Star Wars universe and memories of the film played a huge part in driving me to work in this industry so I’m thrilled to celebrating with other fans today at our Lightsaber ribbon cutting today. There’s so much fun to be had at Westfield in the next few weeks including Lightsaber Training and A Star Wars Experience, along

with plenty of activities for the young Padawans over the school holidays too - Chewie, we’re home!”

LIGHTSABER TRAINING

Lightsaber Training is currently live at Westfield Knox in Melbourne, where Padawans of all ages can learn what it takes to become a powerful Jedi Knight. Taught by an official Jedi Master, students will learn the way of the Lightsaber, accompanied by different offensive, blocking and trickery techniques. Following Westfield Knox, Lightsaber Training will be landing at Westfield Mt Gravatt (QLD) and then at Westfield Bondi Junction (NSW). Bookings are essential. A Matter of Pigs

GEORGE Hope was born at Ainsworth, Lancashire in England on 12th January 1815. He married Alice Hunt on 15th September, 1839 and they came to Australia in the “Clyde” on the 21st April 1840 and George worked for Sir John Jamison at “Regentvilla”. Later with his wife Alice they settled at Castlereagh as farmers, but when the O’Connell grant of “Frogmore” at Werrington was being sold in the 1850’s George purchased a 50-acre allotment bounded partly by the Werrington Road, the present railway line and the Western Road (highway) that he named “Hopefields”. The farm was later known as “Hope Farm” on Quarry Hill at Werrington and was later bought by William Garner the first Mayor of the St Marys Municipal Council. In July 1850 in the Court of Requests at Penrith with regards to the singular decision of the Commissioner on the petition of George Hope who wrote a letter to the Editor of the Sydney Morning Herald saying “Sir, I think it right to make public to the people, a decision of the Commissioner of the Court of Requests at Penrith as one seriously involving the just and equitable rights of claimants in that Court. Some time ago a neighbour’s pigs got among my crop of potatoes and consumed and otherwise destroyed them. My wife Alice in my absence drove the pig’s home to their owner who said that they were his pigs, and on the same day he came and looked at the damage done. When the case came up for adjudication before the Commissioner at Penrith, he would not hear the evidence of my wife and dismissed the case because I did not happen to see the pigs on my crop myself (and my wife did) and I did not drive them home to their owner, that of course, I could not do. You will observe the defendant (neighbour) acknowledged the pigs to be his property and the damage they had done, and conscientiously admitting his liability he was most anxious to settle the matter rather than go into Court, but I would not take less than the amount I claimed and did not cover the damage done by one-half. I will particularly be obliged if you would inform me through the medium of your paper whether this decision of the Commissioner is strictly in accordance with the Court of Equity and conscience, and whether a quibble of law has not been mixed up with the case, upon which alone the decision would appear to have been pronounced. Yours - George Hope”. The answer came in the Sydney Morning Herald on the 18th July, 1850 saying “The English legal system was introduced to Australia through colonisation. Upon arrival to Australia the colonists declared that the laws of England were to immediately apply to all settled lands. This declaration was asserted by reliance upon a legal fiction that the Australian continent was terra nullius; i.e. land belonging to no one, as it was believed that the Aboriginal peoples already inhabiting the continent were not cohesively organised for a treaty to be struck with any single representation of their peoples. Under the conventions of international law at the time, terra nullius lands were recognised as immediately adopting

the laws of the relevant colonial power. The arrival of English Law was later expressly stated in statute by passage of the Australian Courts Act 1828. The act stated that all laws and statutes in force in England at the date of enactment should be applied in the courts of NSW and Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) so far as those laws were applicable. The earliest civil and criminal courts established from the beginnings of the colony of NSW were rudimentary, adaptive and military in character. Although legality was not always observed, the courts limited the powers of the Governor and the law of the colony was at times more egalitarian than in Britain. By 1824 a court system based in essence on the English model had been established through Acts of the British Parliament. The New South Wales Act 1823 provided for the establishment of a Supreme Court with the power to deal with all criminal and civil matters “as fully and amply as Her Majesty’s Court of King’s Bench, Common Pleas and Exchequer at Westminster”. Inferior courts were also established, including courts of General or Quarter Sessions, and Courts of Requests. Representative government emerged in the 1840s and 1850s, and a considerable measure of autonomy was given to local legislatures in the second half of the nineteenth century. Nevertheless, Acts of the United Kingdom Parliament extending to the colonies could override contrary colonial legislation and would apply by “paramount force”. George died at St Leonards on the 31st August 1893 at the age of 78 and Alice born in 1814 in Lancaster died at St Marys on 16th September 1892 aged 76 and both are buried at St Stephen’s cemetery, Penrith.

Penrith GC Women head to Division 4 in 2025

PENRITH Golf Club’s Women’s Grade Pennant team will drop back to Division 4 in 2025, following the completion of this year’s competition.

Penrith’s last game of the season was a 4-1 loss to Cronulla, leaving Penrith at the bottom of the competition ladder and subject to relegation, replaced in Division 3 next year by Royal Sydney.

In an otherwise disappointing season, Penrith captain Dianne Montgomery signalled out junior Jessica Fog for mention, stating this was Jessica’s rookie year with the team, having only previously played in the weekend District Pennant

competition and two years in the Club’s Eric Apperley Shield Mixed Pennant (juniors) team.

“Jessica only played four of our six matches, with two wins , one tie and one loss on her debut.

“We (Penrith) played Jess at #2, which was a good fit, and she had the expertise of Trainee Professional Isabelle Mansfield on her bag as caddie for the first two games.

“Those results were a 2/1 loss for her first match, then a 4/3 win. The other two games she played. her dad Jason was on the bag and the results were a Tie, then a 6/5 win.

“The reason she (Jessica) missed out playing two matches was she was away playing in Jack Newton Junior Golf events, one at Bathurst and the other at Wagga Wagga.”

NRL launches Footy Country series

NRL MEDIA RELEASE

The National Rugby League (NRL) and its longest-running partner, Telstra, today announced the NRL Telstra Premiership Footy Country Series, a new initiative to celebrate and support rugby league communities in regional Australia during the 2024 season.

THE series kicks off on Sunday, April 7 as the North Queensland Cowboys host the Gold Coast Titans in Townsville and comprises 10 themed NRL and NRLW games in total, across nine regional locations.

In each location, the NRL Telstra Premiership Footy Country Series will highlight and strengthen the deep bonds between country rugby league and the elite game. Community activities at local clubs and schools will feature junior rugby league clinics, player and trophy appearances and donating Telstra Footy Packs including hit shields, tackling bags and other football equipment.

Those local clubs and schools will then be given a once in a lifetime experience up close with their NRL and NRLW heroes on game day. Along with tickets, each junior player will get a Telstra Footy Kit, take part in an on-field clinic and form the guard of honour as teams run out for kick-off. Game days will also celebrate the local heroes who make grassroots rugby league possible in each community.

Pioneered by Telstra, the Footy Country Series aims to shine a light on regional communities, where the connection with footy runs deepest, and support children’s wellbeing through participation in the game. The initiative comes following the success of the Telstra NRL Footy Country Tour last year, which took coaching clinics, wellbeing workshops and star player appearances to over 10,000 local junior players during the 2023 Finals Series.

Amanda Hutton, Group Executive Telstra Business said, “This game is all about belonging, connection and community, and it’s in the country

where this relationship runs the deepest. It was great to see the positive difference last year’s initiative made to the physical and mental wellbeing of the kids who participated, and we’re incredibly excited to now kick off the NRL Telstra Premiership Footy Country Series. We hope that it will make a meaningful difference and inspire the next generation.”

As a proud country boy from Dubbo, Panthers skipper Isaah Yeo can’t wait to take his team back to Bathurst in Round 7 to face Wests Tigers.

The Panthers have built a strong relationship with the Central West region of NSW and Yeo says the support for the three-peat premiers has grown enormously since they started taking games to Bathurst.

“The first year we went to Bathurst there was no Penrith jerseys floating around and now they are everywhere,” Yeo said.

“There’s Panthers jerseys as far as the eye can see now and I’m sure the support will be the same in all the towns the teams go to [during the Footy Country series].

“Growing up in Dubbo we had Andrew Ryan who was from our area and he was having success with the Bulldogs and playing for NSW and Australia. I remember he brought the Bulldogs out for a trial game one year

and it we had City-Country games out there as well.

“It was the greatest thing ever having those guys come out to our town.”

Yeo said the move to take NRL games to the country and Telstra’s ongoing financial support of the grassroots provided a huge boost for youngsters aspiring to make it to the big time.

“There needs to be a constant push for younger people back home

to make sure they are active and channeling their energy in the right direction, there’s so many distractions now,” Yeo said.

“It’s something I look back on very fondly [starting out in Dubbo].

“Footy gave me a purpose when I was young and the guys I played with when I was six and seven years old are still my friends today.

“I think it gives everyone back home a sense of pride when someone from their area makes it in the NRL.”
