YEARS of hard work and diligent preparation have finally paid off for the Nepean District’s newest medical interns. Fifty-nine freshfaced graduates were given a warm welcome to Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District by Stuart Ayres, Member for Penrith, Bart Bassett, Member for Londonderry, and Kevin Hedge, Nepean Hospital General Manager on Friday, 24 January. During their one-year internship, the graduates will complete compulsory terms through various specialties including medicine, surgery and emergency. Cranebrook resident and Nepean Hospital intern Rachel Debono says she’s looking most forward to putting her years of learning into practice across a variety of fields. “I’m very excited to start work here and put what I’ve learnt into practice; Nepean Hospital
is in my backyard and it’ll be nice to work here. I plan on being here for a very long time,” Rachel enthused. Penrith resident Vanessa Thomas grew up in the area and says Nepean Hospital was always her first choice for placement. “I grew up in the area and my friends and family have come to Nepean for treatment so it’s exciting to play a part in providing healthcare to the local community,” Vanessa said.

by Kerrie Martin LAST week we were fortunate enough to be on a nine-day cruise, sailing up to the Whitsunday Islands on Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas. You can rest assured that the Nepean News team did a great job of ensuring that everyone on board saw that Penrith people know how to have a good time. It was a fantastic trip, particularly for me when my darling Councillor Greg Davies popped THAT question out at sea and asked me to be his bride. Big highlight moment! As we anchored down a short distance from Airlie Beach, North Queensland, the view of the Barrier Reef and it’s piercing blue waters literally took my breath away. In fact I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a more beautiful sight in my life and I was filled with pride that this incredible piece of natural beauty was part of our Australia. It is with great dismay that I have returned to read that sludgedumping at the reef has been approved by our Federal Government. Queensland Premier Campbell Newman said that his government will protect the environment, but not at the expense of the economy. I had to read that quote three times to really believe he’d said it. We’re not talking about losing a tree or two to make way for a road here; we are talking about tampering and interfering with one of our most treasured regions; the Great Barrier Reef! I confess I’ve always been a bit of an economic conservative - but my God - the day we sell out our beautiful pristine reef for greed I will hang my head in shame, and our governments should too. kerrie@nepeannews.com.au

Wi-Fi hotspots PENRITH Mayor, Cr Ross Fowler OAM said Council will fund a limited free Wi-Fi service in Memory and Coachmans parks as part of its Digital Economy Strategy. The service will be launched in Memory Park on 10 February and available from 10 March in Coachmans Park. Cr Fowler said limited free public Wi-Fi will encourage locals and visitors to spend more time in Penrith and St Marys’ CBDs. “I know residents will enjoy the convenience and the increased foot traffic will benefit city centre businesses,” he said. “Cafes in Wi-Fi hotspot areas, for example, could be used for productive ‘coffee meetings’.” Om Telecom will manage the service which will be accessible with a Wi-Fi enabled PC, Apple Mac, iPad, iPod, Android tablet, smart phone or PDA. The service will be comparable to most home broadband services and include a daily download of 100MB and or 60 minutes of time. If a session times out through inactivity the user can log in again. Customers will be able to pay for extra time or download limit if needed. “Public Wi-Fi is quite common in America and the UK and available in several Greater Sydney cities,” Cr Fowler said. “As a leader of Western Sydney, Penrith should have this service.” Council has worked closely with the Penrith

THE bushfires that devastated the Blue Mountains in October showed Penrith’s Citizen of the Year Peter Camilleri at his best. Mr Camilleri turned his business Penrith Storage King into a collection point for donated goods, to help those who had lost their homes. The business also operated as a drop-off point for water and supplies for the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and State Emergency Service (SES). Mr Camilleri is one of seven City residents who were awarded Australia Day honours at a formal dinner held at the Civic Centre on January 23. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said Mr Camilleri remained on call after hours throughout the fires, to assist those who needed help. “It is this generosity of spirit that has led to Mr Camilleri being awarded Penrith’s Citizen of the Year,” Cr Fowler said. “Mr Camilleri continued to run his own business during this period, while addressing the needs of those affected by fire.
“He even donated storage space to fire victims, so they could keep their sentimental items safe. It was an incredibly generous effort overall.” Bede Johnston was awarded Penrith’s Sports Person of the Year. Mr Johnston competed in the Ironman Australia Triathlon in Port Macquarie in May 2013 in memory of his sister Kate who lost her battle with Juvenile Xanthogranulomas, an extremely rare blood disorder, in 2012. Mr Camilleri was quite humbled to receive the accolades. “I still can’t

Voice in parliament FEDERAL MP for Chifley Ed Husic is encouraging young, local indigenous Australians aged between 16 and 25 to apply for the National Indigenous Youth Parliament. The NIYP is a week-long leadership program to be held in Canberra in late May and early June this year. Developed and sponsored by the Australian Electoral Commission, the National Indigenous Youth Parliament is a once in a lifetime chance to learn first-hand from the people making the decisions that directly affect indigenous communities. “I’m proud to represent many indigenous youth living in the Chifley electorate and I’d love to see them getting involved in this very exciting program,” said Mr Husic. “I believe it’s very important that our next generation to immerse themselves in the political processes which ultimately affect their lives and those of their peers everyday,” he added. The National Indigenous Youth Parliament will offer 50 young Australians the chance to travel to Canberra in May and study how our Government works and how our laws are made. The 50 chosen participants will meet our national leaders and other members of Parliament, as well as receive expert training in public speaking and dealing with the media. ZERO tolerance - that’s the message circling around NSW Parliament and the NSW government is currently working on legislation to tackle alcohol-fueled violence. The package includes mandatory sentencing and an increase of on-the-spot fines for those intoxicated and disorderly and fail to comply with a police move-on order from $200 to $1,100. Londondery MP Bart Bassett threw his support behind the measures and said it was clear that the community wanted action. “We have listened to the people. The legislation is part of the Government’s tough measures to deal with this societal problem,” Mr Bassett said. “Another part of the Government’s approach is an advertising campaign to address antisocial street violence that appears to have increased over the past few years. The deaths of two young men—Thomas Kelly and Daniel Christie—are an absolute tragedy. They were two young men who were full of hope, optimism and promise, but their lives were cruelly cut short. “Thomas was an old boy of the school I attended. Other families also have been affected by street violence. Their families suffer unimaginable grief, pain and suffering as they endure such torment. They have been given a life sentence. It is time the judiciary started taking that fact into consideration.” Mr Bassett also took a swipe at the Greens
for not backing the government on stronger measures. “It is typical of the Greens, whether elected representatives or their operatives, not to support this – they’re a bunch of dropkicks,” Mr Bassett said. “When it comes to acting responsibly based on facts presented and the expectations of the general community, they are always out of touch. “They complain and complain yet offer no solutions and delay for the sake of delaying. The Greens never accept what the majority of the community want and believe their minority views should influence the majority,” he said.

IT is with a heavy heart that we inform our readers that a fair dinkum Legend of the Nepean, Tom Kelly, has passed away. Mr Kelly died on January 15 after a protracted battle with mesothelioma. Tom’s involvement with the National Servicemen’s Association of Australia prompted a nomination for him as Legend of the Nepean subject. Writing the article gave your writer the opportunity to meet a truly remarkable human being – a man
whose courage, tenacity and love for his fellow man was truly inspirational. Following is an excerpt from that Legend of the Nepean feature. THE one bloke you would want beside you in the trenches before going over the top would be Werrington’s Tom Kelly. Tom would be deftly affixing his bayonet while offering words of reassurance to his fellow troops. Calming words. Encouraging words. But actions speak louder than words and one could well imagine Tom being first over the top, leading by example. Showing the way. Inspiring his fellow man to try and succeed. Fortunately, despite serving three months as a national serviceman in 1954 and then five years in the Citizens Military Force (now the Army Reserve), Tom never had to fix that bayonet and draw blood or fire a rifle in anger. Tom’s time in the military came between the Korean and Vietnam wars – for that he will be forever thankful. But as an integral member of the National Serviceman’s Association of Australia (NSAA), he has spent a

John Taylor, secretary of the NSAA Penrith sub-branch, is an old mate and an unabashed admirer of Tom Kelly. In the latest edition of the subbranch’s excellent newsletter, John wrote glowingly of Tom’s contributions to the association, reminding readers what a wonderful asset and friend they had in Tom. “Tom joined the state branch of the NSAA in 1999 and shortly after joined the Blue Mountains sub-branch where he held offices of quarter master, vice president and then president,” John Taylor wrote. “Tom was also on the steering committee which launched the Hawkesbury sub-branch – both Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury (sub branches) owe a lot to Tom getting them well on the road to success. “Tom played a major part in the formation of the Penrith City subbranch in March, 2002 and has rarely missed a meeting since our inception. He has held offices of quarter master, social convenor, membership officer
and treasurer. “Our membership boasts of being in excess of 120 members. Tom recruited many of these members. In 2005 he was presented with a plaque by our state president, Rob Brown, for recruiting the most members in the state for 2005. “For the past few years Tom has worked in close liaison with the Penrith RSL and the Ladies Auxiliary, selling Anzac badges, Legacy badges, Remembrance Day poppies and other charitable items from ex-servicemen’s associations, together with other Nashos, raising in excess of $100,000. “Tom has cemented ties between the RSL and the Nashos.” That last line in John’s homage means a lot to all national Nashos, especially those who served in Vietnam. Your writer asked Tom why he did it all. “Simple really. I love helping people,” Tom explained. “Look, the friendships you form as a Nasho stay with you for life – I just love the comradeship and I, just like the rest of us, would do anything to help out an old mate.” Rest in peace, old soldier.

IT is a documentary following seven Western Sydney teenage boys as they trek the infamous Kokoda Trail with stars from the Panthers NRL team. Narrated by Panthers legend Phil Gould, the hour-long documentary Kokoda: In the Footsteps of the Brave follows the boys as they trek alongside Panthers coach Ivan Cleary, prop Tim Grant and new signing Jamie Soward over six gruelling days. The documentary has been produced by Television Sydney (TVS). Led by Vietnam Veteran and NSW Upper House MP Charlie Lynn, the trek was the brainchild of former Panthers forward Brad Waugh.
Waugh now heads up Panthers on the Prowl, the community arm of the Panthers Group, and said the trek was organised to help teenagers in the Panthers’ heartland of Penrith. The group completed what is normally a 10-day trek in just six days, sometimes trekking for up to 16 hours a day through the humid, mountainous jungle to get to camp. “The seven boys were chosen from local schools following a competitive application process,” Waugh explained. “The boys were from a range of different backgrounds, had very different personalities and varying
interests. There were not only seasoned athletes and school captains, but those who had really started to turn their school lives around after a rough start.” The group had become extremely close as a result of the trek, and all had taken away something from community mentors in the shape of corporate sponsors that also went along, Waugh said. But the trek was not without its drama; the documentary shows the highs and lows of a week spent coping in trying conditions, trudging through mud, and one trekker being evacuated after becoming gravely ill. “The boys learned many things along the way, but mostly how to cope with a range of difficult situations, and how to help others as a team,” Waugh explained. TODAY we are going to talk about one of my favourite subjects “The Bonehead”! With the term “Coward Punch” being used of late, I thought it appropriate to address one of my favourite subjects. As you can all appreciate after being in security for 25 years and of course working in many pubs, clubs and at functions, I have experienced many a drunken bonehead that insists that the planet was developed around them and the rest of us poor humans just have to accept that. I have also been very blessed to have worked at many a race day, where the actual fillies in the stables had more decorum than some of the actual fillies drinking the bar area. If you think that males are the only
people talented enough to attend to toilet practices vertically, think again kids, I’ve seen it all baby! So, let me give you a run down on the various types of drunken boneheads that I have experienced. The non- intelligent boneheadThis is a person that is convinced that being a total tool is perfectly okay, I had one so intelligent (cough cough) that he attempted to hit me with a pool cue, however the tip of it stuck in the roof cavity first and then pulled the entire roof tile and lighting down on himself in the process. It is amazing how quickly you can clear a room when there is sparks, flames and dust flying everywhere. The aggressive Bonehead- This is a person that thinks sculling down 35 drinks in 10.5 seconds is cool (yippee)

and starts to pump up like the hulk on a bad hair day, and proceeds to crash tackle everyone and everything in line of sight. I had a guy take out a poker machine bay one night, was going to high five him for the effort, but couldn’t find him under all the bar stools, ashtrays and the other patrons that just about had a gut full of him as well. The brain surgeon BoneheadThis is the person who proceeds to tell you the scientific facts of how alcohol affects them, how their third cousin’s grandfather’s mother’s uncle is a lawyer and how we must be wrong because it is perfectly normal to fall over 10 chairs and spill drinks over every patron as they walk to the bar. The jive dancing drunken bonehead- This is a person that
considers a dance floor that is 15 metres long and 17 metres wide not to be big enough - and takes out 75 patrons with their dance moves in the process, and then wonders why the DJ won’t play gangnam style. I don’t mind the John Travolta moves in the tight lycra pants, but it’s the windmill and hip thrusting dancing that scares me. The cuddly bonehead- I love these, the ones that hold onto that toilet bowl like it’s gonna spit out a million dollar in the next 10 minutes, and you have to call in the jaws of life to cut them free. So there you have it the drunken bonehead experiences, and apparently all you have to do is add a large amount of alcohol consumed in a short amount of time with attitude - and membership to the drunken bonehead club is free. Little Wings flutter locally By Greg Martin
LITTLE Wings, Kevin Robinson’s wonderful organisation which featured in our last edition’s Legends of the Nepean article, has spread its wings and is now serving patients and their families at Nepean Hospital. On Monday, January 20, Little Wings completed its first flight service for Nepean Hospital to get a family back home to Brisbane. The McGonigle family were down from Brisbane for holidays when 12-year-old Kieran became unwell. After initially seeking treatment for stomach pains, Keiran’s health worsened and he was admitted to Nepean Hospital with a severe perferated appendicitus. Following his operation he was required to remain in hospital for another five days which meant the family could no longer use their nonrefundable return flight tickets home. “Little Wings has been in discussion with Shannan Waddups, the Nurse Unit Manager – Paediatrics at Nepean about providing support for children attending the hospital,” Kevin

explained. “Whist most of Little Wings’ flights support children attending Westmead Hospital, we wanted to provide local Nepean community support services where possible, and this was our first opportunity to do so.” “Keiran and his sisters Rhianna, Akiesha and their nana were picked up in our Little Wings transporter, donated by Hyundai Australia, and taken to the airport for their flight home.
“Nepean Hospital often has families on holidays where a child such as Kieran is injured, or becomes ill and it’s exciting to be able to provide a support service to help these families at a difficult time. “Little Wings is able to pick up from the hospital and look after everything to get the family back home quickly and safely at no cost. Kevin is the Chief Executive Officer of Little Wings, a registered charity that primarily provides free
air transport for children from rural and regional NSW to Sydney for treatment at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Little Wings’ aim is to keep rural and regional families together as much as possible when a child is receiving treatment for a long-term serious illness. Flights are provided to families who, for medical or geographical reasons, cannot use road or rail transport or commercial air transport.

PEOPLE with great courage and empathy for their fellow human beings are frequently called possessing a heart “bigger than Phar Lap’s” If you don’t know any inkling as to who or what Phar Lap was, give yourself an upper-cut and hit the history books!

Lana and her devoted hubby are among those inspirational folk who give us all hope for the future of mankind. Both told your writer that they

had “always enjoyed helping people” throughout their lives. But over the past five months they have, as they say in military parlance, “gone above and beyond the call of duty”. Being Italian, Lana has naturally always enjoyed cooking ever since she was a child in the family home at Merrylands where her mother, Anna and her grandmother, “Mama” Loretta, taught her how to cook “Iataliano”. Naturally Lana has honed those skills down the years and a host of friends and extended family members have sampled her mouth-watering cuisine. The number of folk who have tasted “Mama” Lana’s cooking has been increased markedly in recent months due to her and Roger’s passion for community. And that’s right, Lana, is well and truly entitled to the “Mama” before her name – she and Roger – the pair have been married for 10 years - have seven children between them and they are also grandparents to one grandchild. During the Blue Mountains bushfire emergency last October, Lana and Roger –aided by an increasing number of family members, friends
and strangers “in off the street” – provided 380 hot meals per day to those brave firemen and women who risked their lives to save homes and the lives of residents and our flora and fauna. For nine days straight, Lana worked magic in the small kitchen at the Borg home, Roger packed the meals into containers and helped her deliver them to Winmalee, Faulconbridge and Katoomba fire stations. And aiding and abetting the Borgs in this triumphant venture were an increasing number of people who provided them with gifts of foodstuffs and water. During the emergency, the Borgs heard about the donation centre setup by Peter and Josh at Storage King Penrith where volunteers worked long, arduous hours sorting and distributing donated goods such as canned food, clothes, blankets and toiletries to those affected by the fires. Lana and Roger somehow managed to increase the culinary load and were able to provide nightly meals to 60 volunteers at the donation centre. If that wasn’t enough on their plate, Lana and Roger amazingly found time to prepare BBQ breakfasts at Storage –

LANA & ROGER BORG Prior to taking up their current employment, for six years the pair operated Stop ‘n’ Fill service station. At the request of Tiffany from Kingswood Florist, Lana began giving impromptu cooking classes last year, and Lana’s Authentic Italian Meals was born. So where is Lana’s commercial kitchen? She laughed when the question was posed and urged me to take several steps out of the family lounge-room around a partition into the small – ohso-small- kitchen. “It’s all done in here,” Lana she told me. Thousands of meals for fire-fighters, volunteer workers, the homeless and Mama Lana’s burgeoning list of satisfied paying customers– absolutely remarkable! Despite a growing business, Lana and Roger didn’t hesitate when the bushfires ravaged the Blue Mountains last October. “We contacted Winmalee Fire Station and asked could we help out by providing meals for the fire-fighters and they readily accepted the offer,” Lana said. “I took holidays from Vintage

King for the volunteers and fireys who came down from the mountains for rest and resuscitation. But wait, there’s more! Soon after the bushfire emergency ended, Natalie Ballard, a very much community-minded lawyer with Penrith firm, Adams and Partners, having heard of the Borgs’ community spirit (and great cooking) approached the pair to see if they could help in feeding Penrith’s homeless community. There was no way Roger and Lana were ever going to refuse such a request! Now, with the aid of St Vinnies, four nights each week they prepare and serve hot meals such as stews and pasta dishes to 50 men, women, boys and girls, who don’t have a roof over their heads. Phar Lap? Malua? Tuilloch? Becephalus? Let’s throw in Kingston Town and Black Caviar as well! So who are the Borgs? Lana grew up in Merrylands and Roger, Mount Druitt – after previous relationships they met and married in 2003 and moved into a modest home in Emu Plains. Roger organises work strategies for Elite Traffic Sources and Lana works in advertising sales for local radio station, Vintage FM.

and started cooking and preparing the meals with the whole-hearted support of Roger and a few volunteers who learned about it on Facebook. “I must have got about two hours sleep each night during the emergency but it was worth all the effort to see how appreciative everyone was for what we did.” And the community is now showing its appreciation of the Borgs by gifting them items such as food, clothing, blankets and toiletries to aid the many homeless in Penrith. “It is so heart-warming to see the support we are receiving,” Lana said. “Many of our homeless clients really are wonderful people – due to
circumstances, so often beyond their control, they find themselves in this position but all of us are working hard to improve their lot.” Lana and Roger Borg and all their aiders and abettors - we thank you for your humanity.

Milk Fever in Nursing Mothers - What You Should Know

RECENTLY at WellPet Vets we met Roxy, a 6 year old Jack Russell cross. Roxy came in with shaking and wobbliness, which had occurred suddenly. Roxy was currently nursing seven pups, which had been born three weeks ago. We were suspicious of low blood calcium levels, and did a blood test
which confirmed Roxy’s calcium levels were low. She was treated with careful administration of intravenous calcium. She responded very well to treatment, and was soon walking and behaving normally again. She made a full recovery and went home on oral calcium supplements the next day. Roxy had a lucky escape! Hypocalcaemia, also known as milk fever or eclampsia, is an emergency condition. It occurs when calcium demands by the body are not met by diet and internal mobilisation of calcium from the bones. Producing milk for puppies increases demand for calcium, which is why this condition is seen most commonly seen during the first three weeks after birth, although it may occur in late pregnancy as well. Toy breeds, mothers of first litters and those with large litters are more prone to hypocalcaemia. The puppies themselves are not usually affected as the milk is normal – the mother does not save enough calcium for herself, she gives it all to her puppies! Signs of low blood calcium include nervousness, panting, vomiting, diarrhoea, stiff gait, high temperature, muscle tremors, shaking and convulsions. Once the mother has been treated, the puppies should be weaned if possible. If too young to be weaned, they should be fed a supplemental diet as well to decrease

the amount of milk needed from the mother. The mother should be fed unlimited high quality puppy food and an oral calcium supplement if the episode was severe. Supplementing calcium to the diet during pregnancy can actually increase the risk of hypocalcaemia developing after birth. This is due to how the body regulates calcium levels. Normally calcium levels are maintained from a combination of diet and from absorption from the dogs’ own bones. If a dog has been receiving large amounts of calcium, the body uses less from
the skeleton. This means if the need for calcium suddenly increases, as occurs during lactation, the dog’s system doesn’t respond quickly enough to start removing it from the bones again, and hypocalcaemia can occur. For this reason, calcium supplementation during pregnancy is not recommended. Feeding a good quality puppy food during pregnancy should provide sufficient calcium. Remember this is an emergency condition. If you suspect dog your dog has milk fever, do not delay in bringing them to a veterinary hospital. We are always available.

Dermis - The dermis is located under the epidermis and produces both sweat and oil which keeps our skin from drying out. The dermis is home to hair follicles, oil glands, nerves and blood vessels as well as two important structural components - collagen and elastin. These two naturally-occurring proteins are essential for maintaining the structure in our skin and increasing the product of these has been the focus of much research as a way to decrease the appearance of fine lines

Big-time boxing back at Richmond By Greg Martin
R I C H M O N D Greyhound Racing Club will once again become the House of Stoush when it hosts the NSW Commonwealth Games Selection tournament on the weekend of February 22-23. The selection tournament will be the penultimate step towards gaining a berth in the national boxing squad which will wing its way to Glasgow as members of the Australian Commonwealth Games team. As well as the selection trials, half a dozen or so other bouts will be on the action-packed program – a couple of those clashes will feature the brilliant junior, Nikita Tszyu, son of the great Kostya. Young Nikita shows all the skills of his old man and looks set to follow his footsteps onto the world stage. The Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow on July 23-August 4. That final step towards Glasgow will be at the Australian Amateur Boxing Championships which will be held next April in Perth. The boxers who win at Richmond will automatically earn invitations
to the national titles but if selectors deem a beaten fighter deserves another chance, he or she will also go to Perth. The Richmond tournament is an invitation-only event with four men and women contesting each of the weight divisions. The semi-finals will be held on the Saturday evening between 5pm-10pm and the finals on Sunday (12.30pm5pm). General admission is just $25 but for $120 on Saturday Fight Night, fight patrons can sit down to a two-course meal with soft drinks, wine and beer. The women will contest three weight divisions - the 51kg, 60kg and 75kg classes - which are being contested for the first time at a Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. “We had the ladies fighting on our November card and they provided spectators with several of the most exciting fights on the program,” said co-promoter, Jason Lewis. “Kaye Scott was very impressive in her lopsided unanimous points-victory over the rugged Jessica Messina in the 75kg class. “She is a very good boxer and I’ll be surprised if she isn’t on the ‘plane to

Australia has never won a gold
medal at a senior World Championship or Olympic Games - John Lewis believes Daniel Lewis can rectify that situation – but we have fared much better at Commonwealth Games. We have picked up 12 gold medals down the years – three bantamweight, one feather, two lightweight, three middleweight, two light-heavy and one in the heavyweight division. Gold medallists include Robbie Pedden, Wally Taylor, Daniel Geale, Phil McElwaine and the great Tony Madigan who won light-heavyweight golds in 1958 and 1962.

Harp of Erin Inn
Next Inn is the “Harp of Erin Inn”. The ownership starts with John Harrison who had previously been the publican of the “South Creek Inn” (South Creek House) after taking over from Ralph Jackson Cross in 1839. He came to St Marys in 1848 and became the publican of the “Harp of Erin Inn” when he was granted a Publican’s licence on the 30th June. The name of this Inn was popular in Australia. The Celtic Harp was held in high esteem by the Irish and became the Irish national symbol. The logo shown is from a hotel in Victoria still in use. John held the license until 1851 when his wife Catherine Harrison took over. A reminiscence from “Old Timer” in the Nepean Times stated that the Inn at that time was said to be located on the corner of (old) Gipps Street and the Highway at Werrington and it was once called “The Depot” as well as “Kings Head”. In December 1853 a William Martin was granted the license, and this is where I “bumped” into a very common problem for history and family researchers – a very “common” name (sorry Kerrie!). On researching William, I found that from 1800 to 1853 there were over 30 males with the name of William Martin in the Colony and at least four or more were in our district around the same time. For instance, in 1803 a William Martin aged 38 came free on the “Calcutta”. He was a Protestant schoolmaster at Bathurst Plains so I would rule him out. Another William Martin aged 40 was sentenced for life and came on the “Prince Regent”. He was a Government Servant for Mr Harris. There was a William Martin at Castlereagh in June 1814 who gave a subscription of £2 for the erection of a school house/place of public worship and a bridge across a swamp between the settlement and the highlands to enable the settlers to move their stock and possessions in times of floods. There was a William Martin in July 1815 who was granted a portion of horned cattle from the Government stock that was given as a donation for his services in helping with the construction of a road across the Blue Mountains. The cattle were picked up by William at the Eastern Creek stockyard. In March 1816 this William Martin also gave a donation of 10/- to the Waterloo Subscription for the relief of sufferers under the Duke of Wellington, the money raised was transported to England by His Majesty’s Brig “Emu”. In 1822 a William Martin aged 26 came on the “Guildford” for life. He was a protestant labourer assigned to Alfred Ranken at the Lachlan River at Bathurst (another rule out). A William Martin also a Protestant came in 1824 on the “Elizabeth” sentenced for seven years. After he was pardoned he lived at Phillip Street in Sydney (another rule out). In 1826 a William Martin came out on the “Marquis of Hastings”. He was born in Berkshire in 1801 and in the 1828 Census; his place of abode was the Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney (another rule out). Again, another William Martin who came on the “Eliza” was given a Ticket of Leave. In 1829 a William Martin (a convict) from Sussex came on the “Norfolk” at the age of 26 years. His occupation was given as a ploughman and he was sentenced to life for highway robbery. He was assigned to Thomas Mitchell in Sydney on arrival and in 1831 Thomas and the Maitland Bench sentenced William to
two years in Sydney gaol for housebreaking and robbery (probably another rule out). In 1832 a William Martin came out from Liverpool via the Cape of Good Hope as an unassisted immigrant farmer on the brig “Sophia”. Also in the 1830’s another William Martin who worked as a stockman at the Emu Plains stockyards was convicted of stealing the livestock of Reverend Henry Fulton and sentenced to death. A year later another William Martin was found guilty of stealing cattle from Captain King’s run and sentenced to death, but was found wrongly committed and reprieved in 1832. There was also a William Martin who was accused of stealing cattle from Robert Lethbridge. Another William Martin aged 20 was convicted at the Suffolk Quarter Sessions and came in 1837 transported for 14 years on the “Norfolk” and assigned to Major Druitt. In 1852 a publican’s licence was issued to William Martin for the “Harp of Erin Inn” at Windsor and the same year there was an advertisement in the Sydney Morning Herald stating that William Martin was selling the “Windsor Hotel” in Windsor NSW. These are just a few - so you can imagine finding the right William Martin will take more research. So, back to the “Harp of Erin Inn” and an advertisement placed in the Sydney Morning Herald in February 1854 that has the Inn up for sale, stating that “the premise situated at St Marys was doing good business. The house was brick built and almost new and of the best materials, containing seven rooms with a detached kitchen and a stable for six horses. The building fronts the main street extending back to the creek with an average depth of three hundred feet and has an inexhaustible supply of running water. The garden is trenched and contains some choice fruit trees and the soil is fertile. Also for sale was a cottage and allotment of ground adjoining the inn”. Next publican to own the Inn was Irishman William Cummins who obtained the licence in 1854. In an advertisement in 1857 an interesting insight into the Cummins’ household came to light when William Cummins of St Marys, South Creek wrote “Absconded from my employ, a lad named Thomas Buckley. Description about 5”4” in height, fair complexion about 17 or 18 years who induced my son Richard Cummins to go along with him and if my son will return home no further notice will be taken of it – his description 5’6” had on cloth trousers, strapped, of dark moleskin, blue striped doeskin coat, a panama hat, and I will give £3 reward to pay any persons that may cause him to return to his parents”. Except for the clothing not much has changed in 157 years! A William Cummins owned the “Liverpool Arms” in 1858 and was advertising for it to be let out. In the Sydney Morning Herald in April 1858, William was again granted an annual license for the “Harp of Erin” at South Creek, this time stating that it was located near the terraces (cottages) on the Highway and was between the cottages and Whitford’s public house. His partner was Alexander Pollock. To be continued.

NEPEAN Hockey Womens Masters players challenge at the State Indoor Championships at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Complex Werrington Downs this week. Masters or “recycled juniors” as we call them are extremely strong in numbers not only in Nepean but throughout NSW. 33 teams from as far afield as New England in the north to Tumut in the south and encompassing the Hunter region Central Coast, Illawarrra, Bathurst, Parkes and a strong Sydney (and its surrounds) are to partake. Nepean Hockey Masters field and indoor player June Andreatta will no doubt use the Indoor tournament to hone her skills for her trip to Rotterdam in the Netherlands in June. Having been a “shadow” player for NSW Masters for a couple of years, June was picked up by ACT for the recent Australian Masters Field Tournament where she made the Australian Team. Some wonder how NSW selectors have just missed June for NSW. Friend and Masters Teams mate in the Sydney

IN the last edition of the Nepean News, I touched upon the seven acquisitions the Penrith Panthers had made for the upcoming 2014 NRL season. This edition I will delve a little deeper and tell you exactly why chief executive Gus Gould and coach Ivan Cleary have hit pay-dirt with their new buys. Introducing your new Mountain Men. Jamal Idris Standing 194cm and weighing 117kg, Idris is a man-mountain in every sense. Playing 132 first grade games for both the Bulldogs and Titans, and also representing both NSW and Australia, he is definitely a marquee signing. As a junior schoolboy, Jamal was a national record holder in the javelin and while still being only 23 years of age he has untold potential and his signing is seen as a major coup for the Panthers. Tyrone Peachey At only 22 years of age, the nephew of the great David Peachey is seen as a future superstar. Whilst his frame might be seen as diminutive for a back-rower his ticker well and truly
makes up for any short comings, size wise. Coming to Penrith via the Sharks, Peachey is an 80-minute player whose first grade career is going to be a total joy to watch. Look for him to have a “Segyaro” type effect on the Panthers this season. Kevin Naiqama The 24 year old brother of Wes is one of the real up-and-coming stars of the NRL. Kevin has already represented Fiji after only 15 games in the top grade and was improving at the Knights under coach Bennett every game he played. His versatility will be his biggest asset at the Panthers being able to play basically anywhere in the backline. Like Tyrone Peachey, the younger Naiqama will quickly be a crowd favourite. Brent Kite The “Mr Experience” of the seven new signings. Kite has played 288 games for both the Dragons and the Sea Eagles. He has represented his state and country many times, and has been the Clive Churchill winner (man on the match in a grand final) in Manly’s 40-0 demolition of

At 32 years of age, Kite is obviously in the twilight of his illustrious career, but the lessons he can teach the current Penrith front row will be invaluable. Peter Wallace Welcome home Pete! A St Mary’s junior, Wallace made his debut for the Panthers before moving north to the Broncos whilst also representing his state four times. At only 28 years of age, Wallace has time well and truly on his side and a move back ‘home’ will be the perfect tonic to resurrect a blossoming career. With 171 first grade games under his belt, Wallace’s experience is a perfect mix with the rising Panther juniors coming through the ranks. Jamie Soward A Canberra junior, Soward made his name at the Roosters before moving to the Dragons where he became one of the competition’s most spoken about players. Soward definitely polarizes opinion and is one of the most enigmatic players to ever play the
game but his signing for the Mountain Men, in my opinion, is fantastic. His 171 first grade appearances, his speed, his goal-kicking coupled with his State of Origin foray are an ingredient to lap up. Elijah Taylor I must confess when the Panthers signed the young 23 year old from the Warriors I let out a little “yeh har”. Taylor is one of my favourite players in the NRL and is a backrower who can do it all. Already playing 10 tests for New Zealand in his relatively short career of 67 games, Taylor reunites with coach Cleary in what is another fantastic gain for the Panthers. I cannot wait to sit in the stands and watch him do his thing. There you have it ladies and gentleman, your seven “newbies” for season 2014. Based on last year’s signings, the under 20’s winning the comp and reserve grade making the 2014 grand final you can most definitely say that the future looks mighty bright for the boys who reside at the foot of the mountains. L LITTLE Wings, th the wonderful h it bl organisation i charitable which flies, free of charge, young patients and their families from remote areas of NSW to and out of Sydney for expert medical treatment, is conducting a big fundraising weekend on March 8-9. The series of Twenty20 cricket matches will be played under indoor cricket rules which should make for plenty of excitement out on the field and for those spectators lining the fence. As well as the fast-paced cricket matches, there plenty else to entertain and help raise funds for this very worthwhile cause. A BBQ will be operating each day, there’re raffles (with a host of fabulous prizes) and plenty of celebrity players and guests who will be only too happy to rub shoulders with their admirers. On the Saturday, popular local band, Urban Kaos, will be belting out tunes during the day and from 6pm10pm. Cost per entry of each 10-player team is only $200 – admission for
spectators is free and as we all know – altogether now – the best things in life are free! The indoor format played out in the open should make for plenty of fun, frolics and action - this format allows for players of any skill level or age to play and enjoy the game. Richmond hosts the NSW Commonwealth Games Selection Trials – the victors there then head to Perth in April for the Australian Champions which will determine who boards the flight to Scotland. A highlight of the trials will be the appearance of 15-year-old Nikita Tszyu – yes, the great Kostya’s son – who will be appearing in a couple of non-trial junior bouts. Gotta tell you, I’ve never seen a young boxer who boasts the skills of Nikita! You must see this kid in action! Admission each day is $25 but the promoters are also marketing tablesof-10 on the Saturday night for $120 per seat for which you get a ringside seat, dinner and soft drinks, wines and beer throughout the evening.
