From the Editor’s Desk
BY KERRIE DAVIESLAST weekend I found myself looking at the dreaded red line.. the one that appears on a Covid test revealing a positive result. Boo. I’d just returned from a fantastic holiday - on a cruise ship - so I guess it was a bit of a smack on the bum for having such a good time.
Anyhoo.. following the result were two days of my head pinned to the pillow; cough, fever and headache. As my husband had no symptoms I isolated in my bedroom and hubby out on the lounge.
We had the system of him waiting on me from a distance down pat. He’d knock at the door to indicate a nice cooked meal was on the other side for me. Knock knock, ‘here’s your coffee, and a piping hot crumpet” Tap Tap, “have some fresh fruit and I’ve whipped you up a Caesar salad. Oh and here’s a fresh towel and I’ve washed your pyjamas.”
It was tempting to look at whether this arrangement could enter a permanent phase beyond having the Covid cooties. We worked like a well-oiled machine! A synchronised dance troupe, a symphony orchestra hitting every note perfectly.
Okay, so I may have been the one laying in bed whilst my every wish was catered for. But I had an important role in all this - not passing the virus baton, keeping it in quarantine.
And just as I was picturing us in matching Covid warrior capes, the door flung open without so much as a knock. I looked at his hand in search of my next treat, but saw only a little white box. As he came closer to me and encroached on our safe distance barrier I saw the little white box had a red line through it. He’d tested positive.
We failed at halting the transmission. We weren’t Covid ninjas.
But in all seriousness, we have learned to adapt and live with Covid. Just this week I’ve heard of around ten other people who had Covid also. It isn’t going anywhere in a hurry. But it has certainly lessened in its power. Highly contagious, sure, but it is weakening. We still need to be careful and protect the vulnerable around us, but it’s encouraging that its impact is showing signs of weakness. Won’t it be great when we can one day say, “remember that Covid virus?”
International Mother Language Day celebrations in Blacktown
BLACKTOWN City is one of the most diverse cities in Australia with its people representing more than 180 languages and countries.
21 February is celebrated each year as International Mother Language Day to raise awareness of language, cultural diversity, and multilingualism around the world.
The internationally recognised day aims to promote the preservation and protection of all ‘home’ languages used by communities across the World.
Speaking at a Mother Language Day celebration in Blacktown’s Village Green, Mayor Tony Bleasdale
OAM said; “Nowhere in Australia is the promotion of diversity of language and culture more important than in Blacktown City.
“Language is so often the centre of our cultures and by retaining our Mother Language we retain the links to our Mother culture.
“We celebrate our diversity and enjoy our differences through our food, stories, art and dance, and so often the common thread linking all those things that distinguish our cultures is our Mother language.
“Here in Australia, it is so important to give a particular focus on the preservation of First Nations languages, given their significance
to cultural identity, local history and the connection that our indigenous peoples have to the land.” Mayor Bleasdale said.
The Mother Language Day celebration in Blacktown included music and dance performances, poetry readings and a range of food and information stalls including SydWest Multicultural Services, local Police, Service NSW and Afghan Women on the Move.
History
The seeds of International Mother Language Day were sown following a violent conflict in Dhaka in Bangladesh on 21st February 1952.
Four students were killed and
many people were injured whilst campaigning against the imposition of Urdu as the National language and demanding official recognition of their native Bangla language by the then Government of Pakistan.
The day has been observed globally since 21st February 2000 after it was formally recognised by UNESCO in 1999.
In Australia, with over 300 separately identified languages spoken at home, International Mother Language Day underscores the importance of respecting linguistic diversity and promoting equal use of all languages.
Walker reveals name and bold new vision for Blacktown transformation
WALKER Corporation have revealed their Blacktown city centre redevelopment will be called Blacktown Quarter alongside the launch of one of the biggest ever community surveys to be undertaken in NSW’s largest city.
In the announcement, Walker Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, David Gallant paid tribute to their late founder Lang Walker AO, whose vision will transform Blacktown into a new world-class city centre for Western Sydney.
“Lang was passionate about Walker delivering a new town centre for Blacktown linking people-friendly spaces with thousands of new jobs, healthcare and learning opportunities and his vision has become our reality,” Mr Gallant said.
The residents of Blacktown will also have the opportunity to have their say in an online survey to provide input into what they want their future city centre to look like.
Over the coming months Walker and Blacktown City Council will collaborate to deliver a series of popup community feedback sessions in the CBD, along with selected locations throughout the wider city, to enable hundreds of thousands the opportunity to contribute to this important initiative.
Blacktown City Council Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said the Council is thrilled to welcome Blacktown Quarter to their city centre.
“We know Blacktown Quarter will transform and energise our city centre, bringing huge economic and social benefits for the people of Blacktown and Western Sydney,” Mayor Bleasdale said.
“Local businesses will flourish and thousands of jobs will be created. We encourage everyone to take a look and add your voice as Walker Corporation helps us build a brighter future for our city.”

A novel way for jobseekers to find a role in Home Care
JOBSEEKERS looking for a rewarding role supporting seniors to live independently have the chance to meet a range of employers in the one location – and apply for a role on the spot – at events being held in February and March 2024.
Mt Druitt was the location of an event on Thursday 15 February, with others to be held in St Marys, Parramatta and Blacktown.
SydWest Multicultural Services CEO Elfa Moraitakis said the Employment Accelerator events give people with a desire to improve the quality of people’s lives the chance to jump start their career in the Home Care sector.
“With a skills shortage in Aged Care, it’s exciting to be involved in an initiative like Employment Accelerator to help bring more people into the sector,” Ms Moraitakis said.
“The Employment Accelerator event is a unique opportunity to bring Home Care employers together with potential
employees in the one spot, reducing what might otherwise be a lengthy application process.
“Candidates have the chance to speak to a range of possible employers and may land a job on the spot if they’re the right match.
“Employers can meet a pool of candidates in person in a relatively short time and discuss the benefits of the career and working with them.”
SydWest Multicultural Services held the first Employment Accelerator (Home Care) event at its Blacktown premises at the end of January, attracting nearly 40 candidates.
Two more events dedicated to Home Care will be held this month, with the March events opened up to a range of other industries including Health and Disability, Transport and Logistics, Construction, Hospitality and Cleaning.
Anyone looking for a job can attend an Employment Accelerator event. You will need to register for a free ticket.
revealed a new artist’s impression of the future CBD which will mix premium commercial office space, education and health with restaurants, retail and the largest public domain in Sydney.
“The Walker and Blacktown City Council teams have been working
hard on our vision for Blacktown Quarter to create vibrant, energised spaces through great architecture, careful placemaking and state-of-theart facilities,” Mr Gallant said.
“We are excited to be out and about talking to the community over the coming months where our team will get vital input from locals to ensure our masterplan caters to the needs of both current and future Blacktown generations.”
Blacktown consists of 54 residential suburbs, home to over 395,000 people, making it the largest city by population in NSW and representing around 188 birthplaces and 182 different languages. Half the population is under 35 years of age.
The Blacktown Quarter development will deliver more than 1,000 construction jobs over five years and permanently add more than 4,500 jobs and over $1 billion annually to the city’s local economy.

LIVE REPTILE DISPLAYS
THE Blacktown City Show Committee would like to welcome Live Reptile Displays back to the Blacktown Show. Located in Sydney and owned by Andrew Melrose, Live Reptile Displays are available to work within the Sydney metropolitan area and Illawarra.
Andrew has had over 40 years experience working with reptiles and was the very first reptile licensed educator in NSW. He strongly believes in educating the public about reptile awareness, management and conservation and has achieved this by providing the community with a fun and educational experience with reptiles. At the conclusion people will know what to do and what not to do around reptiles, including the teaching of much needed safety advice and first aid treatment that save lives.
Andrew’s aim is to highlight the many positive aspects of reptiles, especially snakes, which often have a poor image with the hope that people will respect snakes and understand their importance in our environment.

International Organisation of Good Templars
OBy Lyn Forde – President/Research Officer of St Marys & District Historical Society Inc.RIGINATED as one of a number of fraternal organizations for temperance or total abstinence founded in the 19th century and with a structure modelled on Freemasonry, using similar ritual and regalia. Unlike many however it admitted men and women equally and made no distinction by race. The (IOGT) named themselves after the Knights Templar citing the legend that the original knights “drank sour milk because they were fighting ‘a great crusade’ against ‘this terrible vice’ of alcohol”. The motto of the organization was “Friendship, Hope and Charity”. A politician and prohibitionist George Daniel Clark was born in 1848 at Colchester, Essex in England. He was the son of Daniel Clark a labourer and his wife Mary Ann, née Clark. Financial troubles cut short George’s schooling so he went to sea arriving in Australia around 1871 and was employed in Australasian Steam Navigation Co.’s ships. After he married Rosanna Jane Druce in August 1875 at Woolloomooloo he settled in Sydney and became a messenger at the Sydney Observatory. A determined self-improver he already had three loyalties - temperance, Methodism and the cause of labour. About 1873 George had joined the International Order of Good Templars that he chose for its clear commitment to prohibition. He edited the New South Wales Good Templar (Australian Temperance World from 1896) in 1883-1917 and in 1925-32 held high office in the New South Wales Grand Lodge for many years and he was electoral superintendent. The Templars were close knit. Brother Clark tireless and single-minded helped to make the order the most determined and impatient contingent of the State’s temperance cause. In March 1882 the lodge at South Creek was in a very flourishing condition and they had a weekly average of about 30 members. The Reverend Mr Trivett cast his lot with them and with his help they are said to make a great reformation in the little township. The correspondent of the NepeanTimes said that it is wanted, as not a week passes by without some fighting or quarrelling and the origination of all this is that cursed demon drink. By April 1882 the first annual celebration of the Western Star Lodge of Oddfellow’s South Creek took place on Easter Monday. The weather was pleasant but it turned out hot in the afternoon on Victoria Square with very little shade, no seating or shelter but for a small grandstand. The Committee members:- Alf Gassman, Tom Andrews, Charles Hackett with E Paskin Secretary. The South Creek Brass Band headed the procession of IOOF, Order of the Royal Foresters No. 431, South Creek Good Templers and South Creek Guiding Star Lodge of juvenile Templers. The procession numbered 300 and started opposite Mr Gassman’s store marching
two deep as far as Mr Harford’s then turning and marching back to Mr Roberts corner and then to the park. The band in the pavilion played the whole day. Many games were played as well as a game of cricket. The handicap races saw Messrs J Royal, J Giblet and James Hackett running some very close races. Mr A Innis the starter, Alf Gassman the Judge, T. Andrews and C Hackett referees. Over 500 people were present coming in from all parts of the district with one of the most successful racers being the first race handicap winner J H Brown, second race (members only) winner was Charles Hackett, third race boys under 18 years the winner was J Byrnes. Fifth race over hurdles won again by J Byrnes, seventh race won by J H Brown, eighth race for boys under 12 years (was apparently the best race of the day) winner W Erwin. By July a social meeting of the Star of the Western Lodge 214 was held at the Temperance Hall in Penrith. About 120 members and friends started at 8 o’clock with Mr J S Shearstone addressing the congregation saying that when a temperance speaker was ridiculed before and called fanatical it was now they came to be respected by all classes with friends in high order, even royalty with 300 Good Templar lodges in the colony with 11,000 members. Afterwards there was singing by the choir and some of the members and recitals then Reverend Mr Trickett of south creek was asked to address the meeting and there was more singing before the meeting was over. A happy time was had by all.
TEffective Strategies in a Competitive Real Estate Market
HE recent positive shift in the Australian property market may have you considering a foray into the world of investment opportunities. This improved atmosphere indicates a turnaround from previous challenges.
A key driver of this change is the interplay between supply and demand. The number of available properties has fallen significantly, whilst buyer interest has surged. This combination has strengthened the position of sellers and intensified the competition among buyers.
However, this doesn’t mean you can’t secure your dream property. Here are some effective tactics to increase your chances of success:
1. Prepare and Get Pre-approved:
Begin by assessing your financial situation. Review your credit score and living expenses, as these factors influence your borrowing capacity. Consider ways to improve your credit score and reduce debt, allowing you to access better loan offers in the future.
Partner with a reputable mortgage broker like WealthWiz to obtain pre-approval for potential properties. Although not a guaranteed loan, it demonstrates your financial readiness and seriousness
to sellers. Pre-approval also allows for swift action when suitable opportunities arise and sets a clear budget for your search.
2. Act Fast, But Be Informed:
Whilst speed is essential in a fast-paced market, always prioritise thorough research. This includes investigating the property itself, its location, comparable sales in the area, and potential hidden costs.
Seek professional guidance from a buyer’s agent. Their expertise can provide valuable insights, negotiation support, and access to off-market listings. Choose an agent with a proven track record and positive client feedback.
3. Stay Calm and Stick to Your Budget:
Buying property can be an emotional experience. However, maintaining composure is crucial. Avoid getting swept away in bidding wars that could lead you to exceed your budget. Set a clear spending limit and be prepared to walk away if the property exceeds it.
4. Be Flexible:
Whilst price is a major consideration, offering flexibility in settlement terms can be advantageous,
especially if the seller has specific needs. This willingness to accommodate can set you apart from other buyers.
5. Prioritise Due Diligence:
Regardless of market conditions, thorough due diligence is crucial. Secure professional inspections for the property and meticulously review all necessary documents before finalising the deal. Make informed decisions by gathering all the necessary facts.
WealthWiz is here to assist you in navigating the property market, leverage your existing financial resources, and explore potential investment opportunities. We can guide you through the preapproval process, answer your questions, and connect you with a network of real estate professionals.

Blacktown Blasts 23 Premiers!
BY BOB TURNERBLACKTOWN CITY started their chase for the 2024 Championship with a statement game, defeating the 2023 Premiers, Apia Leichhardt 6-3 in front of a jubilant home crowd. Blacktown head of Football Mark Crittenden could not ask for a better way to start the season as his side let all know they will be a force this season. Leading 6-1 with ten minutes to go, Blacktown let two loose goals find the back of the net to take some shine off the win.
Playing without Captain Mario Shabow and star Danny Choi, Blacktown hit their paces twenty minutes into the match to lead 3-1 at the halftime break. Jak O’Brien, the second leading goal scorer in the competition last season, continued his hot form with two first half goals. O’Brien picked up his hat trick in the second half with another goal to give Blacktown a 4-1 lead. Joey Gibbs, the alltime second leading goal scorer for Blacktown and back home after three years playing overseas, was in the thick of it from the start proving a handful for the reigning Premiers. Late in the second half he set up a goal for his long time running mate Travis Major, to take an unassailable 6-1 lead. Major, the all-time leading goal scorer for Blacktown City, showed the combination will be not only exciting but lethal for opposing teams.
Last week, Blacktown travelled away to play newcomers to the NSW Premier League, St George FC. As predicted, Blacktown dominated the game but the goal scoring flurry dried up as the team could not find the back of the net. St George’s tactic to pack the defensive end of the field was proving to be successful as numerous attacks on goal proved fruitless. In the end, St George were happy with the one point from a 0-0 draw while Coach Crittenden was frustrated his side let three points slip by.
Blacktown City are back at home this Saturday, March 2nd hosting their arch rivals Sutherland Sharks. Sutherland are coming off a hotly contested 0-0 draw against NWS Spirit FC last
week in a game that saw three red cards issues. Blacktown and Sutherland are always a heated contest and Saturday will be no different as Blacktown looks to get back to winning football games and the Sharks look for their first win of the season.
I will be a tough week for Blacktown City as they will back up on Wednesday, the 6th of March in an away fixture with Manly before coming back home to host Wollongong in their first Sunday game of the season on the 10th of March. The midweek fixture is to accommodate the reintroduction of the playoffs by Football NSW. Game time for the Sunday fixture on the 10th will be 3pm. Blacktown City Women get their 2024 campaign off the mark when they host Nepean on Sunday, March 3rd at Landen Stadium. New Head Coach, Michael Hawthorne, stated at the Season launch that he felt his side can be a top four contender in 2024 and chase the goal of elevation to NPL 1 within three years.

Kade Webber sets amateur course record in Concord Cup
BY NOEL ROWSELLKADE Webber (Stonecutters Ridge GC) has continued his extraordinary run of success over the past 14 months, shooting an amateur course record of 9-under par 62 in his final round of the 2024 Concord Cup, which was played over 15-17th February at Concord GC.
Sitting overnight in a tie of 16th place, at even par, following his first two rounds of 71 and 72, Kade rose to the occasion on the Saturday, rising rapidly up the leaderboard to eventually surge into first place.
He then needed to endure a nervous wait in the club house, as several players made concerted charges, with all but one unable to surpass his three-round total.
A solid 2-under 69 from overnight leader Lincoln Morgan (Royal Queensland GC) was however enough to give him a narrow victory in the Men’s division, by just one shot over Kade (2nd), followed by Blake Phillips (Concord) 3rd,
Jye Halls (NSW GC) 4th, Declan O’Donovan (Avondale GC) 5th and Coby Carruthers (Jordan Springs / Concord GD) 6th.
Darcy Mackay (Twin Creeks / The Australian GC) finished 12th, Chayse Thorpe (Richmond / Concord GC) 18th, Ti Fox (Richmond / Concord GC) 22nd.
Another western Sydney rising young golf star, Grace Lee (Glenmore Park / Concord GC), won the Women’s division, following a 3-hole playoff with Godiva Kim (Links Hope Island GC).
Grace shot a 3-under par 71 in each of rounds 1 and 2, followed by a 4-under par 70 on day 3, to finish the event at 10-under par. Former western Sydney junior Camilla Kim finished in 12th spot.
The Concord Cup is a World Amateur Golf Ranking Golf Australia National Ranking Event (WAGR) and included a Golf NSW Vardon Event (men) and a Golf NSW Jean Derrin Event (women).
Handicap limits were 4.0 for men and 8.0 for women, with the field limited to 168 players.
