L

ocal Blacktown City students are set to get a kickstart in becoming future environmental champions, with schools in Blacktown City given the chance to share in $1million through the 2022 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants. Woolworths will offer Blacktown City schools and early learning centres, up to $1,000 each, to develop projects that focus on sustainable food production, improving waste management practices or enhancing native habitats. Woolworths NSW/ACT State Manager, Michael Mackenzie said: “Educating young Blacktown City kids on how we can grow a greener future through hands-on learning is an incredible way to make an impact for future generations, and help our local communities today. “The life-long skills that these young students will gain helps to plant the seeds for a more sustainable and environmental future. “Last year, our Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant program saw the highest number of applicants ever. This increased demand is promising to see, as we understand schools and early learning centres in Blacktown City are wanting to provide

enhanced lessons on sustainability in classrooms.” Landcare Australia CEO, Dr Shane Norrish said: “Our goal is to encourage, influence and educate students on how to care for their local environment in a hands-on way. “The Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants help grow students’ understanding of the importance of caring for the Blacktown City environment, beginning in their

own school or early learning centre. To date the program has seen more than 110,000 fruit, vegetable and herb plants added to school gardens across the country. Through taking part, students learn new skills and knowledge such as composting, worm farming and planting bush tucker gardens, as well as an increased awareness of sustainability issues.” Samantha Page, CEO Early Childhood Australia, said: “Early

childhood education and care plays an important role in sustainability. By participating in hands-on learning experiences such as setting up recycling programs, growing veggies or plants and exploring local animal habitats, Blacktown City children learn to explore, appreciate and care for the environment around them. “The first five years of life sets the foundation for life-long learning and the earlier we educate children about the importance of sustainability, the better chance we have of a more sustainable future for our Suburban community.” The Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants program has been funded via the sale of Woolworths ‘Bag for Good’, which was launched in 2018, when Woolworths went single-use plastic bag free. To date, Woolworths has contributed more than $3 million to a total of 2,760 Primary Schools and Early Learning Centres across Australia. Applications for the 2022 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants are open now and close 18 March 2022. This year we would like to welcome Cherilyn, the principal of Misty Ridge Cuddly Animal Farm who has had 30 years experience handling animals. Sydney Antique Machinery Club is back again this year. They will be easy to find by the sound of old engines running like they did when Grandpa was a boy. Come and have a look and a yarn with the Club members who have brought a few samples of their hobby for you to enjoy in a good restoration they run as badly as they did when they were new. Tell them about your own favourite memory of old machinery from when you were growing up in the (so called) good old days. The Club was formed to bring together people with an interest in old machinery, particularly old engines and tractors and the equipment driven by them. The Club promotes the preservation and restoration of this equipment and its members provide advice and assistance to each other. The Club meets monthly at Hawkesbury Showground, between Windsor & Rich mond and organises one major rally each year on the third weekend in September. They also attend many events run by other organi sa tions, and conduct displays of their machinery. A 1/3 scale Fowler traction engine, built by one of our members, will be moving around the Showground and is worth a close look when you see it.

Click go the shears boys, click, click, click… the words of a popular Australian ballad will again come into action with sheep shearing demonstrations at this year’s Blacktown City Show. Former World Sheep Shearing Champion Don Campbell has passed away but has left many fond memories for those who have watched him entertain and shear over the past 40 years. His legacy has been handed down to Tom and Troy Gruver. Tom is almost 23 years of age and had worked with Don for over five years, whilst his brother Troy who is 21 had worked with Don for 3 years. Don was a big inspiration to the boys and had taught them everything they know. The boys had assisted Don at all the local shows and even home visits to properties where there were sheep and alpacas that needed shearing. We love shearing, Tom said, “Don

was a great teacher and we will follow in his footsteps by doing what he loved doing, the knowledge he taught us has enabled us to continue to walk in his shoes.” Troy will be demonstrating at this year’s show.

RAS’S WORKING DOGS Ras’s working dogs will be at this year’s show with demonstrations of man’s best friends amazing ability to handle and muster stock. Kylie and Darren Adams, both successful competitors in cattle dog trialling, will have their dogs on hand and explain some of their training techniques and how and why working dogs are used on farms around Australia every day. The dogs used are known as New Zealand short haired collies (think Footrot flats) and bred solely for their knack to control all kinds of livestock, from sheep and goats to cattle and the ducks that will be used today.

The light hearted yet informative demonstration starts with basic breaking-in methods through to actually working a flock of ducks within meters of the crowd with two dogs working as one to manoeuvre the ducks under the control of their master. At the end of each show Darren and Kylie will bring the dogs out into the crowd so as the young and old alike can get up close and have a pat with these amazing hounds. Once again you are more than welcome to come up and say Gday for a ‘Pat & Chat’ after the show.

The group was form in 2014 to showcase the variety dances from Bolivia, the ages range from 5 years to late 50’s having a kids group and adults, where disability is not an issue. Anyone can dance Typical dances like: Caporales is a traditional Andean dance originated in La Paz, Bolivia. Caporales were presented to the public for the first time in 1969 by the Estrada Pacheco brothers, who were inspired in the character of the ‘Caporal’. This is the overseer of the black slaves and was usually mixed race, wore boots and held a whip, a dance that belongs to the region of the Yungas, Bolivia.

Tinku, a Bolivian Aymara tradition, began as a form of ritualistic combat. In the Aymara language, it means “meeting-encounter.” During this ritual, men and women from different communities will meet and begin the festivities by dancing. The women will then form circles and begin chanting while the men proceed to fight each other; rarely the women will join in the fighting as well. Large tinkus are held in Potosí during the first few weeks of May. The Tobas were a tribe of warriors who lived in the Chaco region of Bolivia. When the Incas came to conquer them, they were amazed by

the rich culture of fierce warriors that they encountered. The Incas greatly admired the Tobas dance and they were taken from their Amazonian homeland by the Emperor Tupac Yupanqui. The dance and music of the Tobas has been re interpreted by subsequent people of Bolivia like the Aymara and the Mestizos. Diablada or Danza de los Diablos (English: Dance of the Demons), is an original and typical dance from the region of Oruro in Bolivia, characterized by the mask and devil suit worn by the performers. The dance is a mixture of religious theatrical presentations brought from Spain and Andean religious ceremonies such as the Llama llama dance in honor of the Uru god

Tiw (protector of mines, lakes, and rivers), and the Aymaran miners’ ritual to Anchanchu. Morenada (Dance of the Black Slaves) is a music and dance style from the Bolivian Andes characterised by a mixture of African and Indigenous elements. The origins of this dance, the three main hypotheses say that the dance could have been inspired in African slaves brought to Bolivia to work in the silver mines of Potosí, another theory states that it would be inspired in the Afro-Bolivian community living in the Yungas region of La Paz, and the third main theory links this dance with the Aymara culture due to the findings of cave paintings in the Lake Titicaca shores in the Taraco peninsula.

A Tanner at Werrington

F

By Lyn Forde – President/Research Officer of St Marys & District Historical Society Inc.

rederick Charles Jones was born in 1875 in Castlereagh Street, Penrith. His father John was born in Carnarvon in Wales and was employed on the London and Northwestern Railway and came to NSW to take up a Government Job. He married Dinah Fanny Wilson who was born at Lawson NSW. With only £150 of borrowed money and no experience in the tannery business, Fred selected a block of ground on Scotts Creek, (formally Stotts Creek) that was between Werrington & Kingswood on the northern side of the railway line and where with the practical help of Daniel Paskin and Bill Ransley, they put down twelve pits and built one small shed to equip the pumping arrangement and a wheelbarrow. A month after the completion of the tannery in 1897 the tannery of five acres was turning out 40 hides of leather a week and by 1910 it had grown into 25 acres of land and handling 1,000 hides a week. After about 11 years of operation of the tannery his annual turnover was estimated to be £60,000. His tanning sheds were most extensive and a practical mixture of old and new. One shed alone measured 120’ x 50’ and was capable of holding £10,000 worth of stock, while others provided plenty of accommodation for drying, dressing, baling and dispatching. Two rooms were set aside for steam drying, one room could hold 800 hides and the other capable of holding 2,000 hides of leather. The drought of 1901/2 dried up his water resources of Scott’s Creek and to keep his tannery working with 20 men employed, he joined with the Paskin Brothers whose tannery was close by and drawing water from the water tower that was located at Kingswood and both tanneries were able to carry on until the drought broke. To stop this from happening again at his own expense Fred built a pipeline a distance of 25 miles from the Nepean River to the tanning yard. The pipeline was situated just inside the railway fence from Penrith to Werrington then across to the tannery. His tannery produced a good quality heavy sole leather that went to two leading Sydney boot and shoe manufacturers. The light and medium leather was exported to South Africa, England and Scotland. His chief source of hides came from the Riverstone Meat Works and the rest from open markets. Later on, they came from his properties in Queensland. In 1920 Fred and a brother bought 4,000 acres of land at Bulga in the Gunnedah district and with other purchases of land, they held a total of 9,000 acres that eventually held some 10,000 sheep and 850 head of cattle. He also took part in meat share farming. Fred let nothing go to waste. The extraction of tallow from the fleshing of hides found a good market in Sydney. He was also “Captain of Industry” for one of his investments in the “State Boot Manufacturing Company” and had a shop on the north-eastern corner of High & Station Streets, Penrith. Other interests were a fish curing venture at Lower Portland, a sawmill at Douglas Park, an interest in a colliery at Lithgow and a gold mining venture at Bungonia in the Goulburn district. Fred was a keen sportsman especially in trotting, and as owner, trainer and driver he owned some of the fastest trotting horses in NSW and for some years was a leading reinsman for square trotters at Sydney courses. He was also a keen gun shot and sporting dog enthusiast owning at one time 24 beagle dogs. He was also a large landowner in the Penrith district, one of the largest known as “Jones Town Estate”, the property was the original grant of John Best in 1814. The Nepean District Hospital is built on part of his estate where he also had a circular training track. In a Land appeal court at Sydney in 1908 regarding the matter of an appeal by Fred against the appraised value

of his land of 28 perches resumed for a road in connection with the approach to the Nepean River, it was explained that the case arose under the Public Roads Act of 1902 “where in section 18, provided that in estimating the amount payable as compensation of the value of the land resumed, and all the improvements and the damage if any, was to be sustained from the severance of the property by the road and should, in every case, be determined by the local land board unless an agreement arrived at between the Minister and the owner”. The question of severance at that stage had not been raised and the Court remitted the case to the Board for further evidence and the Court directed a refund of the deposit that was lodged with the notice of appeal. At the Penrith Police Court in 1912 a case of Edward John Moriarty (Inspector under the Board of Health) v Frederick Charles Jones for allowing polluted matter from Fred’s tannery to run into Werrington Creek, the colour of the water was black. Fred pleaded not guilty. The court case went on for some time with Fred and many witnesses, but in the end the Magistrate dismissed the case. Fred was well known for his generosity and in the depression years of 1930 to 1935 he gave 20 blocks of land off his estate for homes to unemployed homeless families. He also gave land in High Street in Penrith for the central district ambulance. Another case in the same Court in 1936 was St Marys Council suing Fred for allegedly breaching the Local Government ordinances by polluting Werrington Creek, but this time St Marys’ Council was successful when Herbert Pond the Inspector of the Council said that “Werrington Creek was a natural watercourse and in January he visited this tannery for an inspection. He said that “There was a drain that led from an evaporation pond to Werrington Creek and the liquid that was pumped out of the tannery was pink, and a very unpleasant odour and he asked to see Fred who was not at the tannery on his visit”. The P.M. convicted Fred and said he was inclined to think that Fred didn’t know what was going on and when the employees saw what was happening they tried to cover it up before Fred came back. He was fined the court costs, professional costs and witnesses’ expenses. Fred died at his Penrith residence in August, 1938 at the age of 64 and is buried in the Penrith General Cemetery in Kingswood. After his death his tannery continued for a short while and eventually closed down after a productive life of 41 years. Picture courtesy of Penrith Library shows the tannery with some workers including Bob Desborough, Les Gersbach, Dan Paskin, Wall Mallard, Billy Hackett, “Nipper” Giles (boy) & George Adams. First home vs investment property

uying your first property as an investment can have its advantages. Getting onto the property ladder and becoming a homeowner has long been considered the great Australian dream. But the first property you buy doesn’t have to be one you live in – it could be an investment property instead. Wondering which path is right for you? We look at some important factors to consider when deciding between buying a first home or an investment. Buying an investment property Rather than delaying your property plans to save for your forever home, you could purchase a less expensive property as an investment. It may help you get onto the property ladder sooner so you can start building equity, generate income from your investment and take advantage of any tax benefits available.

Keep in mind that there are risks with investing and it’s not the right option for everybody. As you’ll need to pay both your loan repayment and rent each month, make sure you crunch the numbers first. Buying your first home The comfort of home ownership, stability and the freedom to renovate are just some benefits to buying and living in your first home. Not to mention, paying off the house you’re living in can be emotionally rewarding. To help make it happen, there are several government supports available and you may be eligible for stamp duty reductions and other concessions. On the other hand, you may have to compromise on the location, size or type of home you purchase due to budget constraints. And if you’re not ready to put down roots, buying your first home may not be the right move yet.

Choice Pharmacy donates 850 RAT tests to Wanderers Powerchair Team

W

estern Sydney Wanderers FC, supported by the Wanderers Foundation, are proud to announce that Choice Pharmacy will donate 850 Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) to the Wanderers Powerchair Team. Choice Pharmacy have been proud supporters of the Wanderers community for the last three seasons and have extended their partnership to support the club’s Powerchair team in their upcoming campaign. The 850 donated RAT tests will be used by players, carers and parents to ensure that the team can train and compete in a safe environment. Choice Pharmacy General Manager Hasan Moutasallem spoke about the opportunity to give back to a community close to his heart. “Everyone as a whole went through quite a bit during Corona with all the isolations and chaos surrounding that,” said Moutasallem. “When we were asked to sponsor this initiative and provide Rapid Antigen Tests, we jumped at it straight away. “It’s definitely something dear to us and for us to be able to provide the players in the Powerchair competition these tests so that they can go about their

competition is really amazing, as they can go and do what they love, what they enjoy and I think it’s a great outlet for them to get back to normality.” Wanderers Powerchair player Andy Waite said the donation of the RAT tests ensures the team are safe when playing and competing. “Having Choice Pharmacy help us with Rapid Tests to make sure we are safe to go out and compete is really beneficial for the entire team,” said Waite. “A lot of us are immune compromised so to know that everyone is safe when we go out to compete, just makes us feel a lot safer and happier. “So we can worry about the game rather than

catching COVID.” Wanderers Powerchair player Ben Keyte thanked Choice Pharmacy for giving the team the opportunity to continue doing what they love. “Being able to be provided with RAT tests to cover all of us as well as our carers and parents is massive, we can now feel really comfortable in a safe environment,” said Keyte. “It’s going to allow us to get back to doing what we really love which is Powerchair Football, which is something that we have missed out of a lot in the last two years. “For some of us, this is all we have. It gives us purpose and something to look forward to. “A massive thank you to Choice Pharmacy for enabling us to feel like we are in a safe environment and letting us do what we love.” Western Sydney Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas thanked Choice Pharmacy for their support. “We thank Hassan and Ramy from Choice Pharmacy for their support and association with the Western Sydney Wanderers for the last few years,” said Tsatsimas. “We look forward to their ongoing support now and in the future.”

Wanderers launch 2022 Pre-Academy Development Program

W

estern Sydney Wanderers FC’s Pre-Academy Development Program is back for 2022 and there is no better time to register your child to develop their football skills in an intensive and fun environment. Led by the Wanderers highly qualified Academy coaches, the Wanderers coaching philosophy in the program is player-centric and driven with the outcome to provide players for the club’s Isuzu UTE A-League Men’s, Liberty A-League Women’s and future national teams. The program includes a grading day, which allows coaches to monitor participants’ development throughout the length of the program. Participants will be taught the same skills and methods as Wanderers Academy players and is a fantastic opportunity for coaches to identify and transition players into the Wanderers Academy.

Wanderers Academy Technical Director Ian Crook believes the Pre-Academy Development Program is an excellent way to develop the next generation of Wanderers. “Our Pre-Academy Development Program allows us to look at the next generation of Wanderers and hopefully develop them, and get some good players to our system,” said Crook. “It is critical for us to have something in place where we can work with players on a weekly basis and following the success of last year’s 30-week Program we are delighted to bring the program back in 2022.” Former Pre-Academy Development Program participant and current U13s Wanderers Academy player Emile Katrib praised the Pre-Academy Development’s pathway. “I heard that the Wanderers were starting a

Pre-Academy for people to join in so I thought it would be my best chance to develop as a footballer under some of the best coaches, you learn a lot under them like the fundamentals of the basics,” said Katrib. Each block of the program runs over 10 Weeks and depending on how your child is graded, they could be training in a Friday night or Sunday morning session. The program includes a full Pre-Academy Development Program kit, professional coaching from Wanderers Academy coaches under the guidance of Wanderers Academy Technical Director Ian Crook in a safe and enjoyable learning environment. fter a disappointing close to the 2021 season, Blacktown City FC Senior Men are fired up to get back on the field. Leading the NPL 1 Men’s competition last year after 17 of 22 rounds, Covid put an end to the 2021 season as Football NSW made the call to terminate the season. Kicking off the 2022 season in style, on Thursday the 17th of February, Blacktown City FC held its season launch at Bowman Hall, courtesy of Blacktown City Council. It was a significant and historical evening with Blacktown City featuring its first Senior Women’s team to coincide with the Men’s 2022 season launch. The two teams were welcomed by Blacktown Mayor Tony Bleasdale, former Mayor and now state member for Blacktown, Stephen Bali, Deputy Mayor Brad Bunting, Councillors Carol Israel and Julie Griffiths, as well as special guest MC, Stephanie Brantz (see attached Photo). The combination of the two teams enters a new era for Blacktown City FC. The Men’s programme has earned a National reputation for developing young talent and always being competitive in the Football NSW NPL 1 Men’s competition. It took 69 years, but in 2022 Blacktown City is fielding its first Senior Women’s team with a goal to match the men’s development credibility within three years. An immediate enhancement for the women, was the announcement prior to Christmas by Mark Taylor, State Member for Seven Hills, that Blacktown City had been successful in their grant application for female changerooms under the main grandstand. Senior Men’s Coach, Mark Crittenden has primed his team with an extensive pre-season schedule. Commencing with a training camp in preparation for the FFA Cup qualifier

against Central Coast Mariners last November, Coach Crittenden continued a rigorous training schedule including a total of ten practice games, as he prepares for an extremely competitive 2022 season. Blacktown City were victorious in all ten games played against a mixed variety of opponents. “I am very happy with our preparation and the intensity we have shown throughout the pre-season”, said Coach Crittenden. Returning Captain Matt Lewis added, “We have added experience with the return of Mitch Mallia and recruited young talent in Jordan Smylie from the Central Coast Mariners and Jake Trew from the Wanderers who have all fitted in well with the bulk of last year’s squad”. The Men will kick off the season this Sunday, March 6th, at home against Rockdale. Rockdale is touted as a Top Three finisher in the competition so the opening game of the season for Blacktown City will test the extensive pre-season work. Game time is 3pm with the Under 20’s at 1pm. All home games will be played at the newly named Blacktown City Sports Centre (formerly Lily Homes Stadium) located at 5 Quinn Avenue, Seven Hills. Blacktown City FC has taken over full operational control of their stadium, regarded as one of the most well-known and used stadiums in

the country and are constantly making improvements to the ground and its facilities.

The full home season schedule is posted below. Go Blacktown City!

Thrills and spills at Phillip Island By Noel Rowsell

12-year old Elijah Andrew (Marayong) has returned home after competing in the bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup (OJC), which was held along with Round One of the Australian Superbike Championships over the 25th-27th February at Australia’s home of motorcycling racing, Phillip Island. The weekend featured a number of classes, including the OJC, the Yamaha R3 Cup, Supersport 300, Supersport and culminating with Australia’s best riders competing in the Superbike category. The practice rounds started on Friday and Elijah started off strongly, even achieving a 4th position in the early stages. The second and third practice sessions, along with the Qualifying races, were challenging Elijah lost contact of the bunch in Qualifying and could only achieve 19th place. During the first race, another rider miscalculated their overtake

manoeuvre and collided with the back of Elijah’s bike. This caused the piggybacking rider to eventually crash (after disconnecting) but miraculously Elijah stayed upright and maintained control of his bike. This was quite a feat, given that his muffler was sticking out at quite a strange angle. Elijah’s dirt bike riding experience definitely came to the fore and he managed to hold his

position, despite the imbalance of his bike and greatly limited lean angle. The second race was equally frantic, until two fat geese caused a red flag and the race had to be restarted. Elijah had worked his way from 19th to 15th but sadly the restart saw him default back to the second last place on the grid. The third race was incident-free until another young rider lost control and

fell. Sadly an ambulance was required but Elijah had managed to dodge the debris on the track and finished in 16th position. With the fallen rider out for some time with a broken leg, the 19 remaining team mates moved on to Winton Motor Raceway, for two days of the OJC Coaching Academy with Garry McCoy.
