Letter from the editor
Hey guys!
Welcome to session 12! Summer is almost here. I am sure you will all be going to the beach at some stage. Remember to drink water, apply sunscreen and wear on a hat. Swim in the morning or afternoon when the sun is not so strong. Try NOT to swim in the middle of the day and DO NOT EAT just before you swim. You may sink to the bottom! In order to have a good time at the beach, you need to be a smart swimmer. A smart swimmer is a happy swimmer! You will make the lifeguards happy as well! Check out more information from Life Saving Australia: https://goo.gl/srLkHt See you there!

How can a small act of kindness make a big difference?
That is the question our teacher Maggie Asensio threw at us a few days ago while in our English for Academic Purposes class. Everything started when Maggie suggested the topic “Pay it forward”. We had to work on our critical thinking by choosing between writing down a diary of kindness or to show kindness to somebody else. Generally most people believe that helping individuals who need either emotional or financial support is an act of altruism that makes us feel satisfied. Do we agree with this statement above? YES WE DO. We are Alejandra Duque and Jorge Lancheros and a week ago we decided to interview people who work incredibly hard to help others on a daily basis. Who are we talking about? The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services of Brisbane located at Roma Station.
Once we arrived we were instantly welcomed and Firefighters were more than happy to share a bit of their time to answer some of our questions. Chris and Brenton QLD firefighters were incredibly professional and nice and they answered to all our questions with a great smile on their faces. Some of the most important things Chris and Brenton told us in the interview are: “We response to a wide range of emergencies and other terrible situations such as car crashes, and fires”. “We try not to complicate our minds because we need to be strong in other to support others. We need to try to make a situation better at all costs. ”We enjoy our job, we learn from other everyday” It was a great experience for us and we would like to thank both our teacher Maggie and also and the ILSC staff who supported us on putting this story in the Community Calendar.

TIPS
H
ey, Everbody! I've been a teacher at ILSC Brisbane for quite a while now and, in this time, do you know how many students have told me that Brisbane is expensive and boring? Too many to count! Well, Brisbane is my hometown, so I know it well. Let me tell you about all the interesting and free or cheap things to do in this wonderful city.
Cafes
Cafes and drinking chai tea are two of my favourite things to do in my free time. Here are some of my favourite cafes in Brisbane that make great chai (and other stuff, too) and have a great atmosphere. Tea and coffee is usually around $4-$5, so it won't break the bank. • Brew near the Queen St Mall • The Burrow in West End • Shady Palms in Stones Corner • Blackstar coffee in West End
Live Music
I love seeing live music in Brisbane, but it can be expensive. Fortunately, there
are heaps of great places to check out live music for free. My favourites are: • Boundary St in West End. There are several pubs there with live music happening from Thurs-Sun each week. • The Sound Society twice a month on a Saturday. Google Sound Society and click on Visit Brisbane website for all the details. • The Powerhouse - there is free live music every Sunday afternoon (plus many other free events)
Clothes and Shopping
It's no secret - I love colourful clothes, accessories and fashion. But did you know I rarely pay more than $5 for my clothes and accessories? My secret is I buy second hand. Why? Because it's cheaper, better for the environment, and the money goes to a charity. Winwin! Oh, you guys know to take your own shopping bag with you when you go shopping, right? So, where are these place? Let me tell you! • Op Shops are second hand stores. They are everywhere. Just Google your suburb + op shop. For example: Highgate Hill op shop. But I love going to West End, Paddington and Stones Corner for op shopping.
• Suitcase Rummage - This is a market near the library on on a Sunday where people sell stuff from suitcases. It's on a Sunday near the Brisbane Square Library and Casino. For more details, search Brisbane Suitcase Rummage on Facebook.
Picnics
Brisbane has beautiful weather perfect for picnics! I love going to: • New Farm Park • Mowbray Park because they are on the river with spectacular views. You can catch the city cat there easily!
General
There are many, many more cheap and free events in Brisbane. Too many for me to list here. I usually head to these websites to out what's on in Brisbane: • Brisbane City Council events www.brisbane.qld.gov.au (click on What's On for a full list of events. • www.weekendedtion.com/events (click on Brisbane) So, next time you see me, please let me know all the exciting things you've been doing in Brisbane. Enjoy!

Star Student
Kana Uchiyama ILSC Student from 26/01/2015 to 10/04/2015
What made you decide to come to Brisbane, Australia? I decided to come to Brisbane because I wanted to learn English in an English speaking country. I chose Brisbane because it is a similar size city as where I am from in Japan and it has amazing weather. When did you start and why did you decide to study with ILSC? I started to study at ILSC as soon as I arrived in Brisbane in January 2015. I chose ILSC because It was recommended by my visa agency in Japan and I thought the school looked nice and was full of friendly people. Where do you work? I now work at Kadoya Japanese restaurant in Brisbane CBD. I have been working there about 2 years, with wonderful colleagues and meeting new people. What is the most challenging part of your job? The most challenging part is having conversations in English with customers and sales people. I found chating with other English as second language people is also challenging for me because we both do not understand English well.
What do you recommend on the menu? Our best seller is Salad-Karaage-Don which is rice bowl with some salad and Japanese style deep fried chicken but personally I recommend GyuDon which is rice bowl with thin sliced beef cooked in sweet soy sauce. It always reminds me of real Japan. What do you do in your free time? I love visiting local brewery and having beer with my fiancé in my free time. I also like cooking Japanese food but I am learning to cook some western foods. My fiancé loves my cooking. I like watching movies. Disney movies are my favourite and I find they are good for improving my English. What is your favourite English word or phrase and why? “BE HAPPY, BE POSITIVE” Because I was not positive person before I met my fiancé. He inspired me to change my thinking to be happy and more positive. What are your most memorable moments from your time in Australia so far? The most memorable moment is meeting Ben my fiancé. I never
expected to find love in Australia. I am really happy with Ben now. What are your passions / dreams – career, study or personal goals for the future? I would like to work as a dental assistant in Australia because I used to work as a dental assistant in Japan for a long time and I really liked it. Also, I would like to be a mother like my mum. She was the best mum in the world!!! (unfortunately, she passed away 6 years ago from cancer) What's next? My fiancé and I are planning to start a family in Brisbane in the near future. I look forward to raising our family in Australia. I am also planning on furthering my studies by attending TAFE to get qualification for dental assistant so I can work In Australia.
Offer from KADOYA Japanese restaurant!
