Star Student

Jin Jin What made you decide to come to Brisbane, Australia?

The real reason is because Brisbane is cheaper than other cities and countries so I decided to come here.

When did you start and why did you decide to study with ILSC?

I started on first July. I decided to study with Ilsc for three reasons. First reason, Ilsc is very big English language school in the world. Second, Ilsc is cheaper than other schools, teachers and school environment is up to par. Third, you must speak English when you are in school.

What is your favourite animal and why?

My favorite animal is koala. I saw koalas in Australia, it's my first time to see koalas in my life. When I was holding a koala, it felt soft and warm. It is very cute and bigger than I imagined.

What do you do in your free time?

I often spent time with my friends. After class, we go to parties or eat dinner together. Sometimes, we Follow us:

hung out on the weekends or join the school activities together.

What is your favourite English word and why?

“Don’t worry, be happy” When I was unhappy, I heard from my friend. I felt interested. Actually, it’s a song but it was my first time to hear that. It’s my favorite English word, because it lets people easily understand what you want to give voice to, then, if they feel bad it is a very pleasing and helpful song.

What are your most memorable moments from your time in Australia so far?

My most memorable moments from my time in Australia so far is having BBQs with my friends. My friends and I are from different countries, sucha as Italy, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, South Korea, and Taiwan. We prepared the BBQ together because one of our classmates will leave Australia soon so we decided to have a farewell BBQ party for him. It was a very enjoyable BBQ party, we listened to music, we tried to learn each other counties culture, we met new friends.

What has your biggest challenge

ilsc-brisbane

been in Australia?

Australia is a multicultural country so you can listen to a lot of different English accent in here, to understand that has been my biggest challenge in Australia.

What are your passions / dreams – career, study or personal goals for the future?

My personal goals is studying third and fourth languages and I can speak them fluently. If I can speak fluently a foreign language, I’ll have more options for a job.

How has your time in Australia change you?

I start to think about my future. I used to enjoy right now, but when I lived in Australia I realized it's not enough. So now, I try to think about what I want to do or what I want to learn in the future.

What's next?

I am going back to my country Taiwan to finish university. It’ll be a big personal challenge for me, but I'll try to do it .And I'll keep learning English because few months is not enough and learning never stops.

Star Student

Camila Thomaz ILSC Student from June 2017 to December 2017

What made you decide to come to Brisbane, Australia?

Being born and bred in São Paulo, I was looking for somewhere big enough to be considered a city, yet small enough not to be as chaotic to come improve my English. Good weather, which is mostly hot with blue sky to me, was also a priority. Brisbane just ticked all the boxes.

When did you start and why did you decide to study with ILSC?

I studied with ILSC from June to December 2017. One of my cousins studied with ILSC Toronto when she went on an exchange program a couple of years ago and loved the experience. When I’d picked Brisbane to come to and saw that ILSC had a school here I didn’t think twice.

What is your favourite animal and why?

I used to say birds straight away when I was asked this question, but ever since I moved to Australia and had an encounter with ibises, I’ve lost my confidence in this response. They scare me a little bit. And why? Birds can fly, at least most of them can, I’d love to be able to fly!

What do you do in your free time?

Cooking has been one of my favourite pastimes lately. I find it quite therapeutic and it’s a great way to keep myself connected with my culture and my family. I have no memory of a family gather that didn’t have any food, regardless of the occasion, so I always feel that I’m channelling my folks somehow when I’m in the kitchen.

What is your favourite English word and why?

That’s a trick one. Go-getter, I reckon. Love the -er suffixes and the meaning is not bad, hey?!

What has your biggest challenge been in Australia?

When you live overseas every little thing can be challenging. The cars coming the opposite way, the power switch that you keep forgetting to turn on to charge your cell phone, the self-service check out at the supermarket. Nevertheless, each and everyone of us who made the decision to live abroad was willing to be challenged to a certain extend. So, I try to embrace the challenges, small and big ones, and perhaps that’s the ultimate challenge.

What is your favourite part of working at Student One?

The people. I often find myself reflection on how incredible it is to have people from all over the world sort of sharing the same roof. It amazes me both as a resident and as a staff member.

How has your time in Australia change you?

It’s changed me in so many ways, but my perception of and my relationship with time is a significant one. Not only for the actual time difference between Brazil and Australia, which is crazy and made me realise that I shouldn’t be concerned about the future since I’m leaving in it, but the whole experience has taught me that it’s never to late to study, to improve your skills, to learn something new. That’s by far the biggest lesson.

What's next?

I try not to make huge plans anymore and, to be perfectly honest, I’m currently leaving many of my dreams, personally and professionally since I always try to keep both goals aligned. However, I’ve been sussing postgraduate courses out. I might do a Graduate Diploma or a Master next year, but nothing is set in stone.

Star Teacher

Serena

ILSC Teacher since 2013 How long have you been with ILSC?

What is the most memorable moment from your time at ILSC?

What classes do you teach?

Student “Teacher, do you know this song, da na na na da na na na da na na na na?”

Holy moly, I’m really bad with numbers, a fact that many of my students would doubtless back me up on, but I’m going to say around five years.

CAE and FCE mostly.

What do you do in your free time?

Well, I have a degree in industrial design and I used to work as a furniture designer, so I spend a lot of time designing my own stuff; I love eating good food in nice restaurants; listening to podcasts; reading a good book; meditating as much as I can; exercising and watching movies. I also enjoy getting to the beach, or ‘back to nature’ as often as I can, but it should be noted that I’m an absolutely rubbish driver, so I have to rely on the kindness of others for that last one.

What is your favourite animal and why?

I grew up with pugs, they’re gorgeous creatures and I can’t say enough about them. I’ve often felt like maybe a pig might be the obvious next step though; what with the high IQs, the curly tails and the grunting. But, I’m peace loving, honesty I adore animals, one day I’d like to have my own ark.

Gosh! That’s really hard, there have been so many memorable times with staff and students alike, I’ll just give you one of many:

Me - “Hmmm sounds familiar.” Pause. Another student - “Wait, I know, it’s George Michaels, Careless Whisper.” Me - “I’ll put it on YouTube.” For sessions to come, not a day went by that we didn’t give a united rendition of Careless Whisper every time there was a brief silence. The student who asked about it was hands down, to this day the funniest student I’ve ever taught! I’ve also received a few letters over the years from students, and had a few pictures drawn for me which have made my eyes leak a little, they were pretty memorable.

What gives you the most joy in teaching?

There are a few things: firstly, even though I’m the teacher, learning, I’m always learning one thing or another,

the students have taught me endless amounts over the years. Secondly, given my proclivity for pontificating about issues that are important to me, I always get the warm fuzzies whenever a student tells me, “teacher, I’ve learned so much more than English.” I can proudly say for example, that I’ve actually turned a couple of students vegetarian! Changing the world one student at a time. And lastly, getting to have a good laugh, classes should be fun, I can’t count the number of times that the students and I have laughed until we’ve cried.

What is something on your “bucket list”?

Well, even though I saw the Aurora last year in Iceland, I wouldn’t mind seeing one again, perhaps with a better camera next time, and of course there are endless countries yet to be visited, including India where I’d really like to spend some quiet time in an Ashram.

What's next?

I’d to set up a little business of my own, I’ve been talking about it for a looooong time, but my new schedule has finally allowed me to put the necessary work in. I’ll always teach because I love it, but I miss working with my hands.

Swimming at the beach is a part of the Aussie lifestyle but a fun day out can soon turn into a tragic event. Be safe out there and know the signs and signals.
