Hi, mates! Welcome to session

2!

Session 2 is usually a hot one. We tend to avoid activities like soccer or basketball because the sun in Brisbane can burn and leave you feeling dizzy. If you do play, play in the early morning or afternoon/evening and remember to drink plenty of water. Activities are fun but you still have to be smart about it! If you are swimming, swim between the flags. When at the beach, look out for the lifeguards. They are there to watch over you if any danger

occurs but still, you have to be responsible for yourself and your friends. Never swim straight after lunch. This is not a good idea! Do not swim outside of the RED and YELLOW flags. The lifeguards cannot see you. There is always fun under the sun, we just have to choose to right time and the right place. Be smart, be happy and see you soon!

PHOTO: Some of the Irukandji jellyfish caught on Far North Queensland beaches during the 2015-16 stinger season. (ABC Far North: Mark Rigby)

Jellyfish awareness Stung by a jellyfish on vacation? Here’s what you should do:

Tropical stinger safety tips:

Management of stings:

Wear protective clothing (wet suit or Lycra body suit), to reduce exposure to potential stings

• Carefully remove the person from the water

Protect your face and avoid putting your head underwater at high-risk locations

In the absence of a full Lycra suit, wear other protective clothing such as long pants tucked into socks

Enter water slowly as marine stingers will often swim away from people given the opportunity and time

If you are planning a trip to a jellyfish known area, take vinegar with you

• Avoid rubbing the sting area • Immediately douse the sting area with vinegar for at least 30 seconds • If vinegar is not available, carefully remove tentacles off skin and rinse well with seawater (not fresh water) • Call triple-0 for an ambulance immediately • Regularly monitor and record the person's pulse, breathing and consciousness • Begin resuscitation if necessary

Star ILSC Staff

Toshi ILSC Student since 2011 / Counsellor since April 2015 What is your roll at ILSC Brisbane?

Where do you recommend students visit while living in Brisbane?

Cultural Counsellor for Latin America, Europe/ Marketing Assistant.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

Well, I would say completing all my duties on time hehehe! Dealing with Onshore/ Offshore agencies enquiries because sometimes they need things that are out of my hands/role.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part is the fact that students can achieve their goals based on my advice/help, or when students come back to me saying “Toshi, thank you very much for your advice, everything is much clearer now, I will do everything you’ve said”. Apart from that, being working at ILSC allows me to meet students from all over the world and learn a lot from each of them.

What is your best memory from ILSC?

I still remember when I was ILSC student back in 2011, having an excellent person such as Michael Richards as my core teacher, now he is ILSC’s Academic Director and now I guess he is my boss hahahaha! It is a small world isn’t it? Follow us:

What is your favourite English word and why?

"G’day Mate. How ya going!?" I’ve been living in Australia for about 7 years now, and it’s weird how quickly I’ve been able to adapt to the local vocabulary! I love the Australian accent, and sometimes saying these words may sound weird without it. If there’s one main rule about “speaking Australian” is that Australians basically just try to shorten every word as much as possible. It’s pretty fun though, and actually reflect the culture here; laidback, relaxed, and focused on having good times. What is your advice to students living in Brisbane? Enjoy Brisbane’s perfect weather, unbeatable lifestyle and proximity to beautiful beaches all that make Brisbane one of the best places in the world to study.

ilsc-brisbane

Well, Brisbane has so many beautiful places to visit but I would advise 2 very cheap places to visit and one thing that I always ask my students to do during their first week in Brisbane: Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) considered one of Australia’s finest art galleries, also because GOMA allows you to get creative, interactive and involved with local and international artists’ showcased works. Mount Coot-tha Lookout because from there you can see a panoramic views of Brisbane and all the way out to Moreton Bay. It really is breathtaking. City Cat Ride because for only a few dollars you can take a joyride along the Brisbane River to witness the entirety of Brisbane. From Ferris wheels, skyscraper buildings, beautifully architecturally designed bridges and luscious parks, the City Cat is the best way to see Brisbane.

What's next for you?

I’d like to practice soccer more often, but sometimes I just want to spend my weekends with my little boy and wife because time flies and I do not want to miss any second with them.

Star Student

Solange Salgueiro Cordeiro ILSC Student from January 2018 to October 2018

What made you decide to come to Brisbane, Australia?

My choice was Australia because it was the only continent I had not visited yet. Generally, I don’t like very much big cities. So, I chose the third one in Australia: Brissy! Finally all I wanted was to improve my English! Today without English life is complicated for many elements. English is life!

Why did you decide to stay with Student One?

I chose Student One because there are only students. Living in Student One teaches us to be more independent and especially to meet and practice our English! It was really great!

What can I do at Student One in my free time?

In Student One, you can do smart things. Like studying, printing things, playing piano or guitar. But for to tell you the thrust, I didn’t do anything about it. As John says: “She’s a bad student guys, don’t listen to her!”. haha Anyway, I did better, I used the pool, BBQ, ping-pong and snooker. And I also took the last floor to see the sunset! Great times!

What is your room like and how long does it take to get to ILSC?

The room is great for a student, there is really the necessary and it is secure. The time to get to ILSC was 3 minutes on foot. I always left at 8:25.

What is your favourite part about Student One?

To make parties and to share good times by BBQ and more… It picks up the first two questions.

This is your 2nd visit to Student One. What made you choose the same place?

Just for the same reasons as the previous questions. I like to feel free and not having to respect schedules.

What are your passions / dreams – career, study or personal goals for the future?

I work in the administration. I am in an environment where I have a lot of contact with the public and I love it! My passions? Eating good swiss chocolates endlessly. haha, no, I'm kidding. Well, I have various things. Like: making parties, meeting people, helping people, photography

and traveling. Mostly, I like to ride my Kawasaki and escape alone. And above all, I am curious to know anything and everything. Dreams? I think I have never had a dream. I live day by day. My personal goal? Easy, to discover the unknown! Going around the world! And also know who I am. I think that's all.

What's next?

Australia helped me a lot to improve my personality. And the vision that I had of my perspective of the future also changed. I don’t know how to explain it... I just feel it! What’s next? Well, we will see! In any case, continue to live intensely and dream of my life in colour, as Peter Pan has always said and it works!
