l 2010 è stato il suo anno: l’ha vista trionfare al Roland Garros, prima tennista italiana nella storia a conquistare un trofeo del “grande slam”, e agli Open di Barcellona, ma anche alla Fed Cup per squadre contro gli Stati Uniti. E nel 2011 la “sportiva italiana dell’anno”, Francesca Schiavone, ha esordito con una prova della sua eccezionale caparbietà imponendosi nella più lunga sfida nella storia del tennis femminile, quasi cinque ore contro la russa Svetlana Kuznetsova agli Open d’Australia. Iniziamo dal tuo più importante successo, la vittoria agli open di Francia 2010. Che regalo ti sei concessa per festeggiare? Il regalo più grande è stato festeggiare con la mia famiglia ed i miei più cari amici al rientro da Parigi. I miei genitori hanno imbandito una lunga tavolata piena di cibo e vino buono, gli amici sono accorsi da tutta l’Italia. E’ stato bellissimo. A dire il vero però, avrei voluto anche fare una bella vacanza al mare, per riposarmi e smaltire la grande emozione. Ma a noi tennisti non è concesso andare spesso in vacanza. E ho dovuto rimandare. Che scarpe usi sul terreno di gioco? In campo uso sempre la Raptor Ultra II di Lotto. Che caratteristiche devono possedere le tue scarpe da tennis per soddisfarti a pieno? Le mie Raptor racchiudono soluzioni tecniche avanzate che mi permettono di potenziare le performance in campo. La suola dinamica di forma concava, disegnata sulle forme del mio piede, mi garantisce massima ammortizzazione, stabilità e reattività. stivali, col tacco molto alto. Ne avrò almeno una cinquantina. Il fatto è che non riesco ad usarle molto spesso. Per cui quando le indosso me le godo proprio. Le tue preferite? Una scarpa col tacco 12, grigia, che metterei su ogni vestito perché anche se alta è molto comoda, e le mie scarpe Lotto Legenda: comode, morbide, di vari colori e che mi accompagnano sempre. Ti consideri una fashion victim? Non direi proprio. Amo la moda, mi piace scoprire le nuove tendenze ma amo ancor di più vestirmi ed indossare ciò che più mi piace. Che scarpe metti in valigia, quando parti per partecipare ad un torneo? Ovviamente non possono mancare le mie scarpe da tennis e da atletica. Ed a seconda dei tornei che mi aspettano ne porto più paia. Poi una scarpa col tacco perché a volte capita che debba essere elegante, e assolutamente non mancano le mie Lotto Legenda. Hai uno stilista preferito? Me ne piacciono molti, ma alla fine prevale sempre il gusto italiano, e quel suo stile inconfondibile. Laura Biagiotti rispecchia per me stile, eleganza e comodità. Per questo ultimamente ho scelto sempre i suoi capi da indossare in svariate situazioni, perché con la sua semplicità, eleganza ed un pizzico di estrosità mi rappresenta pienamente.

Segui i consigli delle riviste di moda? Non direi… perché mi piace indossare ciò che più mi soddisfa a prescindere se è di moda o meno. Però mi piace sfogliarle, prendere spunti e seguirne a volte gli stili, i colori, ed il… sapore! Parliamo di un’altra passione tipicamente femminile, le borse. Quante ne hai? E le tue preferite? La borsa è quel complemento che a una donna non manca mai, è verissimo. Non ne ho una preferita. Ma ne possiedo moltissime. Tutte diverse, da quella semplicissima a quella molto importante, da quella colorata in tessuto a quella elegante in pelle. Mi piace sceglierla a seconda del momento, a seconda del mio umore, a seconda di ciò che indosso… e alla situazione. Baratteresti una vittoria a un torneo, Roland Garros escluso, per una borsa in coccodrillo di Hermes? Sono una competitiva nata. L’emozione di una vittoria è impagabile. Non la baratterei mai per un oggetto anche se pur così eccezionale come la borsa in coccodrillo di Hermes. Che rapporto hai con i tacchi? Meglio alti o bassi? Per la vita che faccio ora, ho poche occasioni per metterli. Ma mi piacciono molto e se posso indossarli preferisco in assoluto quelli alti. Qual è lo stile di abbigliamento che più ti appartiene e quello che mai vorresti indossare? Lo stile che più mi appartiene …. è il mio. Mi piace sentirmi libera di indossare ciò che più mi piace a seconda del momento e del mio umore. Non mi piacciono le cose “normali”. Ed amo vestire o molto elegante ed estrema, o apparentemente tutta “disordinata”, con colori e stili in contrasto. Le città della moda: Milano, Parigi, New York, Londra, Shanghai. Un tuo ricordo per ognuna di queste. Non ho molto tempo per andare a fare shopping. La mia vita ruota ancora attorno ad un campo da tennis e in palestra, per cui sono molto poche le volte in cui mi concedo di andare a zonzo per negozi. Spesso è la necessità che mi spinge ad andare a comprarmi da vestire anche se in realtà amo farlo. Di Milano ricordo sempre le passeggiate con mia madre Luiscita guardando le vetrine, di Parigi i suoi negozi che spaziano dall’alta moda al vintage, di New York e Londra amo la varietà di stili e la creatività che si respira

ad ogni angolo. Shanghai non ho ancora avuto il piacere di scoprirla, ma penso che un giorno mi dedicherò un po’ di tempo per esplorare tutti quei luoghi che con il loro fascino mi catturano ma che ancora non sono riuscita a visitare. Immagino che tu sia legata soprattutto a Milano… che rapporto hai con la città? Milano mi ricorda la mia infanzia. Sono cresciuta in uno dei condomini più grandi d’Europa dove, ogni pomeriggio, mi ritrovavo con gli amici per giocare nel parco comune. Ho ricordi bellissimi legati a quel periodo. È una città che mi piace molto anche se in realtà è da tempo che non la frequento. Sono venuta via da Milano quando non ero ancora maggiorenne per seguire la mia passione e la mia professione. Ma la mia famiglia vive ancora lì, ed ogni volta che torno dai tornei mi piace ritornare alle mie

origini e dalle persone a me più care. Sei mai stata ospite di una sfilata? Certo, e mi è piaciuto molto. In passato ho anche sfilato per l’azienda che allora mi rappresentava per l’abbigliamento tecnico. È stato divertente. All’inizio mi sentivo impacciata ma poi l’imbarazzo è scemato ed ho iniziato a divertirmi molto. I tuoi sogni nel cassetto? Ne ho molti, come tutti penso. Mi auguro di riuscire a realizzarne almeno qualcuno e di togliermi qualche sfizio. Per esempio avere dei figli. E dopo il tennis che farai? Per ora non ci ho ancora pensato. High heels and lots of shoes Francesca Schiavone sexier than you’ve ever seen her before. Triumphant at the Roland Garros Tennis Tournament 2010, she loves clothes by Laura Biagiotti, is swayed by the charm of bags and shoes and is well up on the technical characteristics of “her” Lottos
2010 was her year: we saw her triumph at the Roland Garros Tournament, Italy’s first ever female tennis player to win a “grand slam” trophy, and then at the Barcelona Open, as well as in the Fed Cup team competition against the United States. And in 2011, Francesca Schiavone, Italy’s “Sportswoman of the year”, made her debut whilst proving her exceptional stubbornness by sticking it out in the longest challenge ever in the history of women’s tennis, almost five hours against the Russian player Svetlana Kuznetsova during the Australian Open. How does this 33-year-old Milanese women recover from such hard work? When she can, she becomes a fashion victim. The only drawback is the amount of time she has available, busy as she is with intercontinental flights, tournaments and training sessions. In this article, however, Francesca reveals how a professional tennis player transforms herself when the calendar enables her to take a break. From warrior to diva, the distance can be very short. It won’t last long, however, as there is the French Open to defend at the beginning of June. So, it’ll be goodbye to her 12 cm heels and back to her tennis shoes, whose technical characteristics she is no stranger to. Let’s start with your biggest success, winning the French Open in 2010. What did you treat yourself to by way of celebration? The best present of all was celebrating with my family and my closest friends when I got back from Paris. My parents had prepared a spread of food and fine wines, and friends turned up from all over Italy. It was fabulous. To tell the truth, however, I would also have liked to have had a holiday by the sea, to rest up and deal with all that emotion. But when you’re a tennis player you don’t often get the chance to go on holiday. And I had to put it off.
Which shoes do you wear when out on the court? On the court I always wear a pair of Raptor Ultra II from Lotto. What characteristics must your tennis shoes have for you to be fully satisfied? My Raptors are based on advanced technical solutions that enable me to step up my performance out on the court. The dynamic concave-shaped sole, designed to the shape of my foot, guarantees me the utmost in rebound, stability and reactivity. What’s more, they are fitted with a Syn-Pulse cushioning system, which guarantees excellent levels and gives me great twisting stability when side-stepping. I find it to be a comfortable shoe, well-balanced in the weight and in perfect symbiosis with my foot. And, finally, let’s talk about the shoes that you wear when you’re not on the tennis court… can you give us an idea of how many pairs you’ve got? Shoes… I’ve got loads of shoes! Of all different types: extremely comfortable, comfortable, boots, ones with very high heels. I bet I’ve got about fifty. The problem is that I don’t get to wear them that often. So when I do, I really go to town. Your favourites? A grey pair with a 12 cm heel, which I would wear with everything if I could because, even though they are really high, they are extremely comfortable, and my Lotto Legenda shoes of course: comfortable, soft, in different colours which go everywhere with me. Would you describe yourself as a fashion victim? Not in the slightest. I love fashion, I like discovering all the latest trends but I prefer wearing the things that I like most.

Which shoes go in your suitcase when setting off to play in a tournament? Obviously I can’t go without my tennis and running shoes. And, depending on the number of tournaments, I have to take several pairs. Then a pair with a heel because sometimes you’ve got to be elegant, and my Lotto Legendas are simply a must. Have you got a favourite designer? I like lots of them, but in the end I always got for the Italian look, with that unmistakable style. For me, Laura Biagiotti is a reflection of style, elegance and comfort. That’s why, lately, I’ve been going for her clothes to wear in various situations, because her simplicity, elegance and touch of moodiness is so me. Do you follow the advice that is written in fashion magazines? Not at all… because I like wearing the things that I like best regardless of whether it is fashionable or not. But I do like flicking through them, getting ideas and, at times, following the styles, the colours and the … taste! Let’s talk about another typically female passion, namely bags. How many have you got? And what are your favourites? The bag is an accessory that any woman simply must not be without, it’s so true. I haven’t got a favourite. But I’ve got loads of them. All different, from those that are so simple to those that are much more full-on, from ones that are colourful and made out of fabric to those that are more elegant and made out of leather. I like choosing them to suit my mood, to suit what I’m wearing… as well as the situation. Would you swap a tournament victory, Roland Garros excluded, for a crocodile skin bag from Hermes? I am a born competitor. You can’t put a price on the emotion of winning. I would never dream of swapping that feeling for an object even if it was something as exceptional as a crocodile skin bag from Hermes.
I’m feeling. I don’t like “normal” things. I love dressing very elegantly and extreme, or apparently completely “disorganised”, in contrasting styles and colours. The fashion capitals: Milan, Paris, New York, London, Shanghai. What memories do you have of these places. I don’t get much time to go shopping. My life still revolves around a tennis court and the gym, so I’ve had very little time to hit the shops. It’s often out of necessity when I do go to buy something to wear even though, in reality, it’s something I like doing a lot. Milan always reminds me of going windowshopping with my Mother Luiscita, Paris has shops that range from haute couture to vintage, in New York and London I love the variety of styles and the creativity that’s there on every corner. I still haven’t had the pleasure of discovering Shanghai, but I think one day I’ll set aside a bit of time to go and explore all those places that have captured me with their charm but which I still haven’t managed to visit. I imagine you have very close ties with Milan… what is your relationship with the city? Milan reminds me of my childhood. I grew up in one of the biggest blocks of flats in Europe where, every afternoon, I used to meet up with my friends and off we’d go to play in the park. I have very happy memories of that period. It is a city that I like a lot even though, in reality, I haven’t been there for a long time now. I left Milan to follow my passion and my career when I was still underage. But my family still lives there, and every time I get back from a tournament I like to go back to my origins and the people I’m closest to. Have you ever taken part in a fashion show? Oh yes, and I really liked it. In the past I also modelled for the company that represented me then for the technical clothing. It was great fun. I felt a bit clumsy at first but then I got over the embarrassment and started to really enjoy myself.
What is your relationship with heels? Do you prefer them high or low? Given my current lifestyle, I don’t get much chance to wear them. But I like them very high and, if I can walk in them, I prefer those that are really high.
Do you have any unfulfilled dreams? I’ve got lots, just like everyone else I suppose. I hope some of them will come true so that I can satisfy a whim or two. Having children for example.
What style of clothes would you say suits you and what would you never be seen dressed in? The style that suits me the most …. is mine. I like feeling free to wear what I like the most depending on the moment and how
And after tennis what will you do? Up to now, I still haven’t given it much thought. Having said that, there are a few things I’d like to do, but I can’t quite say just yet….
