e are excited to share with you our fully “reimagined” Best of Central California, The People’s Choice. Like most things in California, this product has evolved from years past. We are honored to have Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino as this year’s presenting sponsor. We thank all of those that participated in nominations and voting, as well as the advertisers in our inaugural edition of the Best of Central California magazine. This year’s contest was different than the year’s past, resulting in an increase in participation. We had 4,523 businesses hoping to win gold, silver, or bronze in 291 categories, and received 181,607 votes from 53,887 unique voters. With this much competition, winning Best of Central California is truly an accomplishment. With reimaging Best of Central California, we set out to be exceptional and resilient, much like modern-day California farmers. They are progressive, highly educated, and early adopters of modern technologies. Best of Central California can be compared to farm operations … unusually well organized and knowing how to make a “desert” bloom. Farming has always been essential to Central California. By the mid1850s, wheat and grain were the top crops. California’s grain operations began to evolve quite differently from the family farms of America. Between 1890 and 1914, the farm economy shifted from large-scale ranching and grain-growing operations to smaller-scale, intensive fruit cultivation. California’s acreage in cotton ranked 14th out of 15 cotton-producing states in 1919; by 1959 it ranked only behind Texas. Livestock ranches were known for producing some of the best beef, dairy, and poultry. The Central Valley was also known for the large population of sheepherders that would travel the area. With Best of Central California, we celebrate those in the Agricultural community who have been essential to the growth and prosperity of the area. We also honor those across other industries including Eat & Drink, Education, Health & Beauty, Home & Garden, Law, Motors, Services, Shopping, and Things to Do. REMOVING BARRIERS, DELIVERING SUCCESS Officials at West Hills College Lemoore (WHCL) want their students to stay in college. They’re doing everything to make this happen. Today, according to the Community College Research Center (CCRC) at Columbia University Teachers College (CCRC), 81 percent of students entering community college indicate they want to earn at least a bachelor’s degree, but only 33 percent transfer to a four-year institution within six years of starting at a community college. WHCL is out to improve completion rates with their students and is doing all they can to remove as many chronic financial and home-life barriers as possible. For example, WHCL Golden Eagle Pantry: this on-campus grocery store provides all enrolled students with ten free items, including creamy peanut butter - a staple for any college student up to three times a week. The pantry program was opened this spring and is a resounding success because it eliminates hunger PAGE 6 | BEST OF CENTRAL CALIFORNIA
among students. It saves students a trip to the grocery store, saves them gas money going and coming, and helps students struggling to make ends meet (a place many have been to in the past) do more than get by. “We know that students can’t study and can’t focus when their most basic needs aren’t being met,” said James Preston, WHCL President. “Food insecurity is prevalent everywhere, but especially on college campuses

We want to eliminate as many barriers as we can.” Another example of WHCL’s efforts to encourage holistic learning is the technology support it offers students. Laptops and WiFi hotspots are available to all students. Additionally, 93 percent of West Hills College Lemoore students are eligible for financial aid. The college is doing all it can to help students get the support they are entitled to, which includes grants, scholarships, on-campus work-study programs, and cost-free tuition if you are a full-time student taking 12 units or more. At WHC Lemoore, Seven out of 10 classes have zero or low textbook costs. “Another barrier that has saved students more than BESTOFCENTRALCALIFORNIA.COM
$5 million in just five years,” said Preston. “Textbooks have long been an expensive part of a college education. This is just another barrier we want to remove.” Lemoore students are thriving grade-wise because of the school’s ongoing efforts. Students have a 75-percent course success rate, which means three-quarters of all enrolled students pass their classes with a “C” grade or better. Another obstacle that the college has removed includes allowing students to register for classes a year at a time. The Reg-365 program lets students map out their class schedules ahead of time and enables students to register for summer, fall, and spring classes all at the same time. This feature helps
college fit into students’ schedules rather than fitting their schedule to college. With an average class size of 26 students and a military service program to help former active-duty military members and veterans, the college is doing everything it can to help its students not just survive college but thrive in it.
WHCL is very aware that it has the power to improve the economic outcomes and earnings potential of its students. It is working daily to help students navigate the college environment and connect coursework with their daily lives. West Hills College Lemoore is saving its students thousands of dollars and helping low-income minority students attain their educational goals and earn living wages. “Increasing the upward mobility of all our students is what drives us,” said Preston. The Iron Office is not an ordinary gym where folks sign up and then slowly abandon their memberships. There are no smoothie bars, swimming pools, or daycare facilities. The fitness center is squeaky clean but it’s also a place where people sweat. A lot. The Iron Office is a workout gym that lets its members focus on what’s important to them. enough equipment, we moved until we found a building large enough for them and more than 20 new pieces of equipment.” The training environment at The Iron Office is all about strength sports, from Powerlifting to bodybuilding to Olympic weightlifting to cross-training, to Strongman as well as functional fitness, which is exercise that supports every-day living (think walking, pushing, and pulling, bending, squatting, lunging, and working the core). The equipment and training aides are selected specifically to help individuals gain and maintain muscular strength and condition their cardiovascular system. But it’s not just for muscle men. “Because of our military and competitive background, we provide members with purposeful training methods as well as the best equipment,” Aguilera said.
“We host lifting competitions for men and women of nearly all ages, too. It’s where they get to show off their hard-earned strength gains on a lifting platform, and people from all over the country come to participate. But we want all our members healthy.” Members at The Iron Office range from seasoned athletes to first-day beginners. The staff doesn’t just work at making customers feel welcome. They demonstrate their care about the overall health of their members, and work with them to help them achieve their fitness goals and find their way to optimum health without becoming fanatical. “We (the owners) make ourselves available and communicate with our members directly,” Aguilera said. “We know this helps overall member satisfaction.” Located in Fresno near the airport, The Iron Office features BESTOFCENTRALCALIFORNIA.COM

The theater program at California Arts Academy is focused on helping children with all levels of experience grow as performers and as individuals. Prior to joining the academy 18 years ago, artistic director Daniel Chavez, Jr. helped develop the Broadway Jr. Collection line of shows, which are licensed by schools and theaters across the nation and beyond. Academy students have toured the nation, working with current shows.
Some might associate martial arts with just kicks and punches, but self-defense is only a part of it. Fresno Ultimate Martial Arts aims to show that martial arts is about discipline, learning, and problem solving. The base of the kid’s martial arts program is the education of life skills such as positive mental attitude, high goal setting, perseverance, and confidence. In 2015, the Fresno County Historical Museum debuted, making it the only museum of its kind to showcase the vast history of Fresno County. It provides a place where generations of residents can reflect and learn about key events, and study interesting aspects of Fresno County’s rich history. The museum has handheld, voice activated tours for guests. Additionally, the museum is open year round by appointment.
The LGBTQ+ community has a fun space in which to relax with the addition of the Splash Bar downtown. Enjoying a favorite drink while dancing the night away to the resident disc jockey are just two ways to unwind at Splash. TELL US ABOUT COLTON’S & BEING A SOCIAL HOUSE. From the beginning, our goal was to create a casual restaurant but strive for a level of quality far beyond what casual restaurants typically provide. The idea of calling ourselves a Social House came about simply from believing that socializing and enjoying a meal with others is as important as the meal itself.
WE HEARD THAT YOU BEGAN WITH A “SOCIAL EXPERIMENT”, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
WHAT IS SOCIAL THERAPY? After much thought during the four months we were closed when we were all being told to “social distance”, we did a lot of soul searching regarding our name. After all, we do call ourselves a “Social House”. The Social Therapy theme was really us doubling down on our original beliefs. Having a meal with others does more than satisfy physical appetites, it also satisfies the craving for connection. It is about drawing people together, focusing on the wellbeing of others and providing social nourishment.
The experiment came from our owner wondering, “What would happen if you opened a restaurant and let the public decide what they wanted?” It began before opening, by inviting local community members in, to gather, enjoy small tastings, and offer feedback, in order to help us develop our opening menu. This worked out so well, that officially gathering guest feedback, via our Beta-Tasting process, continues to be our most important guide in making changes to our menu and operations. We would not be the restaurant we are today if it had not been for the willingness of the community to honestly share their wants and feedback.

Laying the foundation for all that we strive for at Colton’s, Jim now partners with our General Manager, Brit Collins Dean, who oversees all dayto-day operations. Brit is also responsible for developing our food and cocktail specials, and our social media program. She has a passion for Colton’s and the restaurant business and is active in the California Restaurant Association currently holding the seat of Vice President in the Fresno County chapter. In managing a staff of over 90, Brit is surrounded by a dedicated and amazing team including Maria Garcia, our Kitchen Manager, Julie Witten, our Assistant Manager, Rodrigo Garcia, our Assistant Kitchen Manager.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR COLTON’S? Because of the continued support from our patrons and the growth we’ve been able to achieve, we’ve been considering expanding to a new location. It would certainly be exciting to build a facility that was designed specifically for the operation of Colton’s. For example, we can tell you that it would definitely involve a large outdoor dining area and a much larger kitchen as a start. But for now, we have our hands full and are so grateful for the support we have received. Being voted the Valley’s favorite restaurant was certainly beyond our wildest dreams and we do not plan on resting on our laurels.
