Our first two years were a great success in engaging the communities of Marion and Polk counties. How Rick’s has taken community outreach to a whole new level
F
or 42 years, Rick’s Custom Fencing & Decking has been fortunate enough to do business in the Willamette Valley and beyond, from Salem to Vancouver and the Oregon Coast to Eastern Washington. There has always been an aspect of the business that turned to helping the communities they work in, whether it was sponsoring the local little league team, or donating items for charity auctions. However, in 2020 they kicked their community outreach into a whole other gear with the inception of the Rick’s Community Support Drive. “Like a lot of businesses, we didn’t know what to expect in March 2020,” said Taylor Pawley, Marketing Director at Rick’s, and creator of the Rick’s Community Support Drive. “We prepared to lay people off, and cut back on everything, but by the end of April our phone was ringing off the hook with people wanting to spend money on their outdoor living spaces that would have gone to an annual vacation or indoor project.” It was an exciting time to be in outdoor construction, but something didn’t feel right as their business grew by 30% while other businesses not deemed “essential” had to close their doors and many people lost their ability to work outside the home. In June of 2020, they started a campaign to give back to some of the local non-profit organizations that were providing immediate Covid-related support to those in need. For every fence board sold in that month they would give $.25 to the selected organizations. Previous months they had topped out at about 75,000 fence boards, but that June they sold over 90,000!

“Rick initially said let’s give up to $25,000 so even though we fell a little short of the 100k fence board goal, we gave the full amount pledged,” said Pawley. The original organizations they partnered with were Impact NW, Maurice Lucas Foundation, and Three Rivers Community Foundation. After the success of this first initiative, it was clear that this wasn’t going to be a one-off thing. “Our employees were more enthusiastic about it than anyone. They donated items, volunteered their time, and made personal connections with the organizations we were working with,” said Pawley. Since their initial $25,000 donation in 2020, Rick’s has now donated over $200,000, and their team has supplied over 500 hours of community service. Most exciting for them is the ongoing partnerships they have built with the over 25 organizations that they support. Relationships with organizations like Make-A-Wish Oregon has helped them to get involved on a very local level with support for families that live just down the street in some cases. “I got to help on our Make-A-Wish project last year for the family in West Salem. It’s been really cool to see Rick’s do these projects in my own community,” says Nick Marshall, General Manager and Keizer native. “Giving back has now become a part of our company culture and I think it is one of the biggest reasons that the employees and community gave us a Silver medal in Places to Work this year.” Whether it’s their long-term reputation or this new community first outlook, something seems to be working as Rick’s has won back-to-back Golds in Outdoor Living, Fence Company, Deck & Patio Installer, and Building Material Supplier. “What I’m doing with our marketing is about making sure that our employees and our customers understand what we as a company stand for—making people’s lives better. We’re not just building you a fence; we’re building you a safer yard. It’s not just a deck—it’s an extension of your home and living space. These products are investments in your home and life, and we want our customers to know we understand and respect that investment.”

Michelle began creating custom cakes in the summer of 2015, leaving a long career in the tech industry. After completing a few cake-decorating classes, she began working at Fred Meyer stores as a baker. She went from being a rookie to professional artist in less than a year. Michelle was urged by others to start her own business. She launched her bakery business, Michelle Ashley Custom Cakes, from her licensed home kitchen in 2016 and by 2018, her business growth drove her to move into a brick and mortar shop. In 2020, she won the gold medal in both of the Best of the Willamette Valley’s Cupcake and Bakery categories. This year, her bakery won gold in four categories including the Best of the Willamette Valley’s Bakery, WomanOwned Business, Cupcakes, and Dessert categories. Michelle Ashley Custom Cakes is currently housed in the 45th Parallel building. Michelle’s bakery is known for its delicious custom cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, cookies, and gender-reveal cakes. Michelle and her team also make 2020 BEST OF THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY
other desserts such as colorful macarons, cannolis, cinnamon rolls and select handcrafted artisan sweet treats. What really sets her apart from other bakers in the area, though, is her willingness to create specialty desserts for the dietary specialty markets. The bakery staff love to talk about the shop being the place in town folks go to for all their vegan, keto-keeping, sugar-free, gluten-friendly and dairy-free desserts. All of the recipes are scratch made and designed by Michelle herself.

“We make our own powdered base for sugar-free desserts,” Michelle said. “Sure, it would be a whole lot cheaper to not grind it down for our cream-cheese frostings, but it is so worth it to see the smiles on the faces of customers who know they can rely on me to let them indulge and not have that weird aftertaste that so many sugar-free substitutes have.” The specialty cakes and cupcakes are not ordinary, so don’t expect grocery-store prices. But customers know they’re getting their money’s worth with Michelle Ashley Custom Cakes. “My customers know that I use the finest ingredients in my products and the taste really brings it home for them.” Michelle said. “They know they’re worth every penny.” What started as a fun past-time and a way to channel her creative energy, quickly became a full-time (and then some) passion for Michelle, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Celebrating the Heart of Volunteerism
J
ust shy of the year since it was dedicated in July 2021, the Gerry Frank Salem Rotary Amphitheater continues to attract a crowd, with many paying homage to the man who defined volunteerism and community service. Its popularity might have something to do with the fact it’s located in Salem’s Riverfront Park, a more than 20-acre greenspace that has been called the city’s “living room.” Or perhaps it’s because it’s adjacent to the (senator) Peter Courtney Minto Island Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge, which has become an attractive magnet for hikers, strollers, dog walkers, runners and bicyclists looking to connect to the 1,200-acre Minto-Brown Island Park since the bridge officially opened in August 2017. Or maybe it’s the amphitheater’s location near the historic Union Street Railroad Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge, which was adapted for reuse as a popular pedestrian crossing in 2009 linking 114 acres at Wallace Marine Park. Whatever the reason or use, the Gerry Frank Salem Rotary Amphitheater welcomes residents and guest users for all occasions. Kathleen Swarm, who manages the amphitheater for the city, said it is expecting a crowd for its free Movies in the Park at the amphitheater Saturdays, July 16, 30, August 6 and August 13. “We also have some of our favorite annual events now utilizing the amphitheater, such as Make Music Day on June 21. If all goes well, we still have some surprises yet to announce,” Swarm said. “Seeing as construction was completed in the fall (last year), and most events plan a year ahead, we are very happy with the summer 2022 bookings.”

Barry Nelson is past president of the Rotary Club of Salem, informally known as the downtown Rotary. He and Ken VanOsdol co-chaired the Rotary amphitheater project and estimates it took them each about 5,000 volunteer hours. But it was a labor of love, Nelson said, knowing that it would honor Gerry Frank, whom he says epitomized volunteerism in the Salem community. Frank could have lived anywhere in the state, but he loved Salem and made it his home for almost 70 years. Nelson told the Statesman Journal in a news obituary that ran in March this year (after Frank passed away at the age of 98), that the motto of Rotary is “Service Above Self, and that Gerry Frank was a “walking billboard” for that maxim.” “When we told him that there’d been much discussion and agreement to name it in his honor, you could tell he was absolutely tickled,” Nelson said. The amphitheater embodies a space that was designed for community inclusion, said Dylan Chavez of CBTWO Architects, LLC. He was the lead architect on the 5-year-long project and said it was a great experience. It dovetails, he added, with other community projects CBTWO is involved in including the design of the new Salem Police Department building and the upcoming Salem Family YMCA, which is expected to be completed later this year. He said his firm is delighted that the amphitheater project has already won the Salem Historic Landmarks Commission’s Ben Maxwell award and it’s also a nominated finalist for the Oregon DJC (Daily Journal of Commerce) award for arts, culture, and entertainment. “The amphitheater fits in nicely with our goal of trying to develop spaces that are both distinct and inclusionary,” Chavez said.

Tucked away on the Northeast corner of Bush’s Pasture Park, adjacent to McCulloch Stadium is the Deepwood Museum & Gardens, formerly known as Historic Deepwood Estate. The estate consists of a five acre property with a vast array of outdoor experiences. One may not realize that the estate is a Salem city park. As a park, the grounds are open free to the public year round. Divided

into two main areas, the park features the Formal Gardens and Grounds & Nature Area. Deepwood’s beloved gardens are maintained by dedicated volunteers of the Deepwood Gardeners and the Lord & Schryver Conservancy. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Salem’s Riverfront Carousel was inspired by the first old-world style carousel in Missoula Montana that Hazel Patton found on a 1996 family visit. When she rode the carousel, she knew it was more than the music and motion of the ornately carved and hand-painted horses that created magic in Missoula. The real beauty was how the carousel united the community by combining history with the creative talents of Missoula’s citizens. She knew citizens of Salem could bring similar magic to the banks of the Willamette. And they have. Open Wednesday through Sunday in downtown Salem.

Heralded as the largest Trolley Museum in the Pacific Northwest, the Oregon Electric Railway Museum is an operating trolley museum. They feature trolleys and other electric railway equipment from the West Coast as well as from around the world. The railway equipment collection dates from the 1890s through 1977. They are located at the Powerland Heritage Park in Brooks, voted best family attraction. Families also enjoy their annual Steam Up event that takes place in July and August. The Great Oregon Steam-Up is the showcase event at Powerland Heritage Park. Celebrating 52 continuous years of operation, the event offers something for everyone in the family. The dates for 2022 are July 30 & 31 and August 6 & 7. You and your family will learn about early steam and diesel railroading, and experience the smells, sights and sounds—on a model railroad with the Willow Creek Railroad (WCRR). the Miller Steam Powered Sawmill, typical of the small, often portable, sawmills that operated throughout the Northwest from 1900–1930. This fully operational museum display is used to produce lumber for various on-site building projects. The turn of the last century (1900) Heritage Farmhouse includes a parlor and kitchen, furnished as early day rooms. The French Prairie Heritage Rose Garden is a repository for old roses that had been cultivated on the French Prairie prior to 1910. The rose garden is adjacent to the farmhouse. The informally designed garden is organized into separate rose collections: Roses of the French Prairie, Father George Schoener, Settlemeir Collection and the Mission Collection. While there are many family activities to enjoy, the day wouldn’t be complete without a delightful evening and happy hour at gold winner Benedetto Vineyards, complete with live music. They are located in Dallas. When in the Silverton area, make sure to visit silver winner, The Nobel Fox. A full bar and adult beverages await, along with award winning food to please every appetite. This year, celebrate in fashion … here are a few ideas The St. Paul Rodeo 4th of July Parade is known for it’s fun and colorful community parade with entries from all over the North Willamette Valley. Make sure to arrive early to stake out your spot on the parade route and enjoy Americana at its best on this very special, patriotic holiday. At the rodeo grounds you’ll find food, carnival and vendors until the 1:30 p.m. St. Paul Rodeo 4th of July matinee performance. Two tents with food and cold beverages are on the rodeo grounds. Independence Day may best be spent in the town named Independence. Since 1902 Independence Days, (formerly known as Western Days), has been a hometown tradition for locals. It’s a 4th of July party like no other, a special event planned for the community, by the community. The event is at the Riverview

Park in downtown Independence, July 2nd - 4th. It is three full days of non-stop fun celebrating the birth of our great nation. On the 4th, you’ll want to cheer on the MonmouthIndependence Rotary Club’s Grand Parade. The entire community of Stayton pulls out all of the stops for the 4th of July. Start with a $10 Stayton Firefighter’s breakfast with proceeds supporting the High School Senior class of 2023 and their all-night graduation party. Then make sure to work off breakfast with the Fun Run/ Walk presented by the Stayton Boy Scouts. There is a planned Oregon Air National Guard F-15 flyover, and then on to the Stayton Grand Parade. Major General (Ret) Julie Bentz will serve as the Grand Marshal of this year’s parade. From 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. head over to the Event Grounds at Stayton HS for fun & games, food trucks and live music. The evening concludes at 10 p.m. with fireworks.
