It serves made-from-scratch breakfast and lunch weekdays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and offering catering options for business gatherings and events.
The café is the vision of Lori and Randy Ross, designed as a program to equip youth aging out of foster care with the essential tools and skills needed for success. The restaurant teaches valuable life skills as well as paying a living wage to the young people making fresh food for the hundreds of loyal customers.
In its first year, the café has taken home the gold, silver and bronze for “Favorite Sandwiches & Breakfast,” “Favorite Coffee Shop” and “Favorite Lunch Spot,” quite the achievement for the nonprofit. Customers flock to the cozy eatery for Messenger coffee and delicious sandwiches made fresh to order with premium, locally sourced ingredients. Every visit is made better knowing that every dollar is reinvested in the youth and the programs serving them.
FosterAdopt Connect, is an Independence, Missouri, based 501c3 nonprofit, which serves communities across Kansas and Missouri. Their mission is to end
the generational cycle of abuse and neglect and they work tirelessly to provide the advocacy and resources to ensure better outcomes for all those affected by the child welfare system. Of the more than twenty innovative programs they’ve designed, the Connect Café, is their first social enterprise.
The restaurant resides in what will eventually become FosterAdopt Connect’s Kansas headquarters, following a multi-million-dollar renovation expected to get underway in 2024. The facility will enable the nonprofit to expand its training programs to include multimedia, construction, arts and technical labs. This will expose youth affected by foster care to the myriad of career options available to them. The youth
will build the soft-skills needed to be successful in certificate and degree programs offered elsewhere.
Twenty percent of the young people that age out of foster care will become homeless. A staggering statistic that FosterAdopt Connect aims to change. It is through innovative programs like the Connect Café that the agency seeks to disrupt the system. The generational cycle of poverty, abuse and neglect can be broken with dedicated supports and wraparound services. With its food and clothing closet, Sammy’s Window, its life skills/ financial training programs and tireless advocacy, the agency is committed to bettering outcomes for the 20,000 children in Kansas and Missouri affected by foster care.
