This year’s contest started with open nominations across over 100 categories and we received names of exceptional people, businesses, and places.

Join Jeff Conway for a special edition of Laguna Beach Favorites Spotlight featuring Janet Evans Willson, an Olympic Champion and Laguna Beach local. Janet had the historic honor of carrying the Olympic Torch during the Opening Ceremony of the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996, where she handed it to professional boxing legend Muhammad Ali to light the cauldron.
Muhammad Ali, Olympic Boxing Gold Medalist (Rome 1960), one of the most significant sports figures of the 20th century, receives the final relay of the Olympic flame from Olympic Swimming Gold Medalist Janet Evans to light the cauldron at the opening ceremonies of the Atlanta 1996 Games.

SPOTLIGHT CONVERSATION OLYMPIAN JANET EVANS WILLSON WITH JEFF CONWAY
Laguna Beach is home to many distinguished athletes covering the gamut of sports, and with the Paris Olympic Games this Summer, and the Los Angeles Games on the horizon, we wanted to check in with our local all-time favorite Olympic swimmer Janet Evans Willson to get her take on the Laguna Beach Favorites.
As a three-time Olympian (1988, 1992, 1996), fourtime Olympic Gold medalist, Olympic Silver medalist, multiple world record holder during her career, forty-five American national titles, and the Chief Athlete Officer for the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee, we couldn’t ask for a better representative for inspiration and insights.
Swimming laps at 2 years old, and by 15 years old Janet had already broken world records in the 400m, 800m, and 1500m freestyle events. Between 1986-1995, she won 25 out of 27 major international races at 400m and 22 out of 23 at 800m, with her trademark windmill style dominating the pool. Her world record for the 800m freestyle reigned for four Olympic Games until it was finally bested at the 2008 Beijing Games.
LBFavorites: Janet, thank you for joining us, let’s talk a little about your favorite aspects of life in Laguna.
Janet: I love Laguna Beach. I’ve lived here for sixteen years, and I feel blessed. It’s an incredible place to raise a family.
My husband, Bill, grew up in nearby Newport Beach/Lido, and plays beach volleyball. My daughter, Sydney, (a distance freestyle specialist like her Mom) enjoys the beach life. Jake, my son, is a surfer who grew up since birth in Laguna Beach and believes that Summer on the beach is “Normal”.
LBFavorites: How would you describe the local vibe?
Janet: The people here are kind, gracious, generous, we’re fortunate to live in such a beautiful place. Laguna Beach is bound by community and culture, it’s different from any other SoCal community. The people make it special.
LBFavorites: What do you envision when you think of your perfect day in Laguna Beach?
Janet: We like to go to the beach, go into town, and we’ll hike to the Top of the World. We also enjoy walks with our dog “Dozer”, a 10-year-old mutt (Lab mix) from a local shelter, who loves to hit the beach!
LBFavorites: Tell us about some of your favorite places to shop, dine, and visit.
Janet: There really are so many, but I like Laguna Supply, Tuvalu, Laguna Surf and Sport, and Nick’s for brunch and our standing date night. There’s Sapphire, and Finney’s. I love Jackie at South Swell Donuts, and we’ll go to Candy Baron.
LBFavorites: Do you have a favorite season?
Janet: Fall, October to be precise.
LBFavorites: With a storied competitive career, what motivates you, and what is some of your favorite advice for the next generation to create a successful life?
Janet: The ‘84 Olympics inspired me, and I credit my parents with much of my success, even though Mom couldn’t swim!
It’s important to realize that life always throws you curveballs, it’s not always going the way you expect.
Olympians make it look easy, but it’s not. You’re going to have good and bad days, speed bumps, and success is
how you navigate. Stay positive, pivot, and keep your eyes on the prize.
LBFavorites: What is the primary key to your success?
Janet: Steadfast determination.
LBFavorites: The Olympics have been a big part of your life, what are your thoughts on the 2024 Paris Summer Games?
Janet: Paris is going to be great, visually incredible with events in spectacular settings such as beach volleyball under the Eiffel Tower. It’s an important Games for the Olympic movement, and they are looking forward to building on this for the future.
LBFavorites: During the swimming competition, who will you be watching?
Janet: USA’s Katie Ledecky, and keep an eye out for Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh.
LBFavorites: How about the 2028 Los Angeles Games and how exciting they will be for the region?
Janet: Southern California has a rich Olympic history, especially with water polo and volleyball. At the Olympic Games in Los Angeles (LA28), everyone will have something that calls to them.
It’s wonderful that Laguna also has its connections to Olympic history. In addition to our Olympic athletes and medalists, Laguna Beach is also home to a number of 1932 Summer Olympic Village cottages purchased and relocated here after the ‘32 Games in Los Angeles, which brings a fun aspect to celebrating locally. Visitors will make it busier than ever, in a great way!
LBFavorites: How would you describe the spirit of life in Laguna Beach, considering the demands on your time for work and your dedication to the Olympics?
Janet: With my busy schedule and commuting to Los Angeles 2-3 times per week for work, plus travel, when I return home, I fall in love with Laguna Beach all over again. n
