ACTIVITIES & ATTRACTIONS

T

he Lakes Region is a playground for adults and children, offering a variety of activities and attractions that can only be found right here. It’s these unique destinations that define a Lakes Region experience. A destination for arcade game enthusiasts, Funspot is the largest arcade in the world. It was founded in 1952 by Bob Lawton, who still works here every day. Funspot provides quality entertainment in an atmosphere fit for the whole family – and its array of fun is continually growing. Funspot, in The Weirs section of Laconia, offers more than 600 games, including 300 classic arcade games. It’s much more than an arcade, though, boasting a 20-lane ten pin and candlepin bowling center, cash bingo, indoor mini-golf, a restaurant, a tavern and more. If that wasn’t enough, Funspot also hosts a scoop shop for Jordan’s Ice Cream, and the aerial

adventure course Monkey Trunks. See www. funspotnh.com. In Gilford, Gunstock Mountain Resort is busy all summer with adrenaline-powered pursuits. New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon is best known for its NASCAR races, which run July 19-21, and Sept. 20-21 this year. It’s also the home of Motorcycle Week (June 8-16) and more than 250 on and off-track events, including the Gift of Lights. See www.nhms.com. Polar Caves Park in Rumney consists of nine amazing granite boulder caves connected by boardwalks for easy exploration. Bring a picnic or plan to cook out in the Pine Forest. Feed the animals in the animal area, try to get lost in the Rock Garden, climb the Polar Ascent and try the Polar Climbing wall. See www.polarcaves.com.

GUNSTOCK MOUNTAIN RESORT

G

unstock has long been known for providing family-friendly skiing in the Winnipesaukee region, and is quickly adding to that a reputation for having the most outdoor fun in one area. “If you are looking for a fun family vacation or a weekend getaway for two, Gunstock is New Hampshire’s closest mountain resort featuring breathtaking views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the White, Sandwich, and Ossipee Mountain ranges,” said Jen Karnan of Gunstock. “What’s your favorite way to ‘get down’ in the summer?” Gunstock, located in Gilford, offers guests the chance to ride mountain bikes on wooded trails, take off-road Segway tours, hike or ride the chair lift to the top of the mountain, dare to tackle the sprawling aerial adventure course, ride one of the longest zip lines in the country, and try out its newest attraction, its Mountain Coaster. FAMILY FUN GUARANTEED...

(Courtesy photo/Metro)

M

any families have been visiting the Lakes Region for generations. After a day or two of relaxing at their vacation spot, they’re ready to set out and explore the region. With so much natural beauty, and so many one-of-akind places throughout the region, it’s easy to fill an itinerary for a day of family fun. Located on the grounds of an historic sheep farm, Prescott Farm Environmental Education Center, on White Oaks Road in Laconia, provides year-round education programs designed to encourage curiosity, discovery, fun and connection to the natural world. The center also has hiking trails and a children’s natural play area tucked into the woods. See prescottfarm.org. In fact, there are many organizations in the Lakes Region that are dedicated to providing an opportunity to learn about the natural world. In Holderness, the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, and its live animal exhibit trail, offer guests the chance to get a look at animals that are native to New Hampshire, including everything from chipmunks and owls to black bears and mountain lions. See www.nhnature.org. In Tamworth, medical care was provided to villagers over a span of 99 years by two men: Dr. Edwin Remick, who started practicing medicine in 1894, and his son, who kept the family business operating until his death in 1993. In addition to caring for their neighbors, the

Remicks were also farmers. Today, their property, in the center of Tamworth Village, is the site of The Remick Country Doctor Museum and Farm, which preserves the techniques that New England farmers used a century ago. See www.remickmuseum.org. Like the village of Tamworth, neighboring Sandwich seems like a repository of quaint New England charm. The buildings in the center of town are all painted white and appear as though they haven’t changed in a century or more. Visitors come to check out the arts and craft galleries, the Transportation Museum, or to venture out of the town center in pursuit of the many hiking trails. If you come to Sandwich, bear in mind that this secluded village doesn’t have a gas station. See www.discoversandwich.com. Sandwich is one of the many small towns that marks Independence Day with a fireworks display. The boating crowd often chooses to watch Meredith or Wolfeboro’s fireworks display from the water. Other towns, Ashland, most notably, are known for their Fourth of July parades. If there’s an animal that symbolizes summer in the Lakes Region, the loon could be it. A loon’s life is hardly simple, though, as the unique aquatic birds are threatened by both climate change and human activities. On Lees Mill Road in Moultonborough, The Loon Center

FAMILY FUN GUARANTEED... FUN from page 20 and Markus Wildlife Sanctuary offer both an indoor facility to educate visitors about the most recognizable of Lakes Region birds, and a chance to walk through the sanctuary with a chance to spot one for yourself. See www. loon.org. And then there are the more traditional summer vacation activities. Many visitors will make a trip to Weirs Beach, to visit the beach and the arcades and other shops on the boardwalk. Nearby, the Weirs Drive-In is one of the few remaining movie theaters of its kind. Its four screens show first-run films at 76 Endicott Street East in Laconia. The Gilford Cinema 8 on Old Lake Shore Road also features first-run movies and matinee and evening showings in the region’s largest auditoriums. There’s a go-kart track in The Weirs, across the street from Funspot, a favorite place to while away a rainy day by playing arcade games, bowling or indoor mini golf. See www.funspotnh.com. What else to do if the raindrops are falling? Each town, no matter how small, has its own library, and they welcome children no matter the weather. For example, The Gilford Public Library has books for every age,

Members can check out passes to museums, galleries and science centers, as well as audio books for their drives around the region. See www.gilfordlibrary. org. And if your little ones need to burn off some energy, go to the Lakes Region Gymnastics Academy on Route 106 in Belmont, where open gym is offered on Saturdays from June 24 thru August 17. The Academy also offers summer camps and birthday parties. See www.lakesregiongymnasticsacademy.com.

Railroad, the trail spans from Elm Street in Lakeport to downtown Laconia and then on to the Belmont town line where it meets with Belmont’s Winnisquam Scenic Trail, creating 4.25 miles of continuous trail between Lakeport and Belmont. The trail connects Lakeport and downtown, offering convenient access to the Laconia Public Library and views of Lake Opechee. It then continues from the train station past Pitman’s Freight Room and Laconia’s Bartlett Beach to the Belmont town line, where it meets with Belmont’s Winnisquam Scenic Trail at the Leslie Roberts Beach. This section winds through the woods and offers picturesque views of Lake Winnisquam. The trail offers locals and visitors alike the opportunity to stop for a picnic, swim or venture off the trail to shop and grab a snack or lunch at one of downtown Laconia’s restaurants and shops along the way. First conceptualized as the Lakes Region Bikeway System in 1982 by the Lakes Region Planning Commission and the City of Laconia, the WOW Trail is a part of a renewed regional trail effort that aims to transform the state-owned railroad right-of-way into a year-round public recreation space for residents and visitors to enjoy—ultimately connecting Meredith, Weirs Beach, Lakeport, downtown Laconia, Belmont, Tilton and Franklin with New Hampshire’s Northern Rail Trail. ARTS, THEATER, MUSIC

C

reativity abounds in the Lakes Region, with a lively and active arts, theater and music community. In downtown Laconia, Frates Creates at the Belknap Mill provides art lessons, caricatures, cartoon storytelling and paint-along parties. The Belknap Mill, which was originally built as one of New England’s first textile mills, is now a museum. Just outside the mill, the riverside Rotary Park hosts concerts. The Lakes Region Art Association provides a supportive and educational forum for local artists, both amateur and professional. Their work hangs in businesses around the region, and is offered for sale in a gallery in the Tanger Outlets in Tilton. In Meredith, at Mill Falls Marketplace, Oglethorpe Fine Arts and Crafts boasts a treasure trove of quality handcrafted items from across the United States. Oglethorpe prides itself in carrying beautiful, quality pieces for use in our everyday lives. Head out to Wolfeboro and visit The Sandy Martin Art Gallery, an artist-owned Fine Art Gallery located at 15 S. Main St., where Sandy Martin exhibits her paintings. Her work is hung in private and corporate collections internationally. The Art Place, also in Wolfeboro, is located in the center of this quintessential New England town. The gallery is open year round and features 18 artists, many from the area, who are skilled in various mediums. Artwork is available in watercolor, oil, acrylic, photography, and limited edition prints. The Art Place will host several exhibit openings throughout the year.

The Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion (formerly known as Meadowbrook) is a 9,000-seat amphitheater on the shores of beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee in Gilford. The venue is now owned by Live Nation, the entertainment giant that owns Ticketmaster. This year’s lineup includes Lynyrd Skynyrd, Zac Brown Band, Trace Adkins and Clint Black, Snoop Dogg, Ice-T, and Warren G, Heart and Sheryl Crow, Hootie & the Blowfish and Barenaked Ladies, Rob Thomas, The Goo Goo Dolls and Train, Beck, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson, Alabama and the Charlie Daniels Band, and ZZ Top and Cheap Trick, among many others. Great Waters Music Festival is a series of folk, classical and other performances at several venues around Wolfeboro. The Granite State Music Hall in downtown Laconia is the latest entry to the local music scene, featuring live bands throughout the summer. The Winnipesaukee Playhouse stages professional and community-based theatrical productions. The theatre, tucked away at 50 Reservoir Road in Meredith, has become a cultural gem in the area. The Interlakes Summer Theatre, located at 1 Laker Lane in Meredith, offers professional summer stock productions of Broadway classics and shows for kids put on by the Interlakes Children Theatre. Soulfest is an annual Christian music festival held at the Gunstock Mountain Resort in Gilford, and features three stages and over 80 artists and speakers. This year’s event runs Aug. 1-3, and features Bethel Music, Switchfoot, For King & Country, Matt Maher, Jordan Feliz, and more.

LACONIA MOTORCYLE WEEK - JUNE 8-16

(Courtesy photo/Alan MacRae/NHMS )

I

t’s the oldest motorcycle rally in the country, dating back to 1916, and still offers the authentic feel and excitement of being out on the open road on two wheels and having an adventure with people who share the same kind of passion. That’s why people come back year after year to the Lakes Region for Laconia Motorcycle Week and wrap themselves up in the mystique which surrounds the original Gypsy Tour and the freedom from convention which it symbolizes. The bike riders are very much a crosssection of the entire country and you’ll find doctors, lawyers, prison guards, police officers and yes, even accountants, showing

up along with plumbers, construction workers, waitresses and auto mechanics. Those showing up for the first time will find a welcoming reception from the people of the Lakes Region, who look forward to greeting bikers and making new friends, as well as from their fellow riders. First-timers will find no better introduction to the event than the annual Peter Makris Memorial Run, which kicks off a week-long celebration on Saturday, June 8, from the Naswa Resort. The event is a fundraiser for the Laconia Fire Department’s Life Saving Fund and Water Rescue Team as well as for Easter Seals of New Hampshire’s Veterans Count program.

BOATING By Adam Drapcho THE LACONIA DAILY SUN

Lake Winnipesaukee is a playground, and each summer the fun includes tubing, wakeboarding and, the newest water sport, wake surfing. But a half-century ago, when the lake was just beginning to be seen as a destination for fun in the sun, a different sport was king: waterskiing. Some people still waterski today, of course, but in the 1950s and ’60s, the sport dominated Lake Winnipesaukee, and some of the region’s other water bodies, too. There were even waterski teams that competed on the lake and put on demonstrations to wow spectators. Lynda LaFlamme remembers that era fondly. Her father, Albert, owned LaFlamme’s Bakery, and

after he got out of work every afternoon, he’d take the boat out and pull the kids for the rest of the day. “It became a family thing; we came from a very small community, we started our own water ski club, the Prescott Bay View Club. First of all, it was competition – my family thrived on competition,” LaFlamme said. “It was a fun time in our lives, it was a memorable time, because all these years later we’re still talking about it.” LaFlamme lives in Florida now, but her waterskiing days aren’t just a memory. Her son and daughter-in-law have a home on Lake Opechee, and they’ve kept the waterskiing tradition alive. “I can still get up and ski, and every once in a while I can still one-ski,” LaFlamme said. Gretchen Shortway, who grew up

in Gilford, was part of the storied ski team sponsored by Goodhue’s Boatyard. “I must have had around 50 trophies,” she said. As a kid, all of her friends’ families had boats, and they all waterskied. Shortway, a wiry girl, was stubborn on skis. “I never wanted to fall, so I held on for dear life,” and her tenacity was noticed by Tup Goodhue, whose father owned a boatyard in the Glendale section of Gilford. Tup asked Shortway to join his ski team, which already featured Brad Thompson. The team put on weekend shows off Weirs Beach, and they featured stunts such as Shortway riding atop a human pyramid of other skiers. They also competed in relay and distance races. A 50-mile waterski race, said Shortway, would take a week See next page

from preceding page for her body to recover from, but she didn’t worry about that until she reached the finish line. “You don’t think of it when you’re doing it, your mind is on the course, your mind is on finishing,” Shortway said. But those longdistance races could be harder on the boat driver than the skier, Goodhue said. BOAT & WATER TOY RENTALS

(Courtesy photo/Bill Hemmel)

I

t’s very important to have the right tool for the job, and that applies to the serious job of having fun on the lake, too. If you want to rent rather than own your summertime toys, you have a lot of options in the Lakes Region. Most marinas on the lakes rent boats, and many rent kayaks, canoes and paddleboards, as well. You can also rent wakesurfers, wake foils, water carpets and lots of other water toys. Those looking to rent a boat need to keep in mind that a New Hampshire Safe Boating Certificate is required to rent any boat with an engine rated for more than 25 horsepower. You must be 16 years old to get a certificate. You can obtain a temporary 14-consecutive-day certificate from most boat rental facilities by passing an online test that you can take on the spot. You can only get one temporary certificate per year. Another tip about renting boats and other equipment: you should reserve your equipment as early as possible. Rental facilities report that they are often booked solid well in advance, especially for holiday weeks such as Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day. “Everybody wants to go boating!” Irwin Marine

Parts and Rentals Manager Shawn Minor said. Irwin Marine rents boats suitable for both fishermen and recreational users at both its Laconia and Alton facilities, including 21-foot Sea Ray Bowriders and 24-foot Berkshire pontoon boats. For those renting a boat, Irwin’s also has rentals of water skis and tubes, along with the required tow lines and life vests. For more information, call 603- 524-6661. Winnisquam Marine rents boats, including highperformance Bennington pontoon boats rated at 200 to 350 HP, at its Winnisquam location, and all of the rental boats have GPS units. Winnisquam Marine also rents stand-up paddleboards, canoes, kayaks, wakeboards, kneeboards and other equipment at its Winnipesaukee location. Water skis, towing tubes and related equipment are only available to customers renting a boat. For details, call 603-524-8380. You can also rent regular runabouts and pontoon boats of many different sizes from Fay’s Boat Yard in Gilford. They also rent smaller non-powered utility boats, such as rowboats, and low-horsepower boats that don’t require a boating certificate, as well as see WATER TOYS page 41

Fay’s has increased the variety of boats available to rent this summer. “We’ve phased out the Chapparal boats and added five new lines of boats,” Service Coordinator Rick Dean said. “We’re looking forward to getting feedback on the new boats.” For more information, call 603293-8000. Anchor Marine on Union Avenue in Laconia has been renting boats for over 35 years. Owner Bob Andrews said pontoon boats have grown in popularity. “All of the pontoon boats we rent have three pontoons, for added stability,” he said. “They have four-stroke 115HP engines that run very quietly.” They also rent regular runabouts, but do not rent non-powered or low-horsepower boats. Towing tubes and water skis are also available separately to customers renting boats. If you rent a boat for six days you get the sixth day for free! For more information, call 603-366-4311. Scott Trexler, general manager of Trexler’s Marina in Moultonborough, said they rent Bowriders and Manitou pontoon boats, as well as kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards. They also rent rowboats and other low-horsepower craft that don’t require a boating certificate. “The smaller utility boats are popular with the fisherman,” Trexler said. father was about to send to the scrapyard – into a ski boat. He had to refiberglass the hull, and he scavenged a pair of Mercury six-cylinder engines off a work barge to power it. In those days, most fuel tanks were flat on the bottom, and toward the end of a long race and if the water was choppy, the pumps could suck in air, causing the boat to stall. So, with help from his father and the yard foreman, Goodhue found two beer kegs and installed them as round-bottomed gas tanks. Those came in handy for his father’s 60th birthday, when he commissioned a 60-mile race – held over a weekend on Winnipesaukee – that took skiers from one corner of the lake to another, then back to the start. The Saturday portion of the race went fine, but on Sunday the lake was so rough that Goodhue eased the throttle back as much he could while still keeping Thompson on top of the water. Then, near Rattlesnake Island, a wave crested over the bow. “It washed me right out of my seat, and I still had the steering wheel in my hands,” Goodhue recalled. He scrambled back to the cockpit and shoved the wheel back on its spindle and was able to finish the race. A few days later and still sore, his dad urged him see BOATS page 56

Waterskiing today

Waterskiers might be harder to find today on Winnipesaukee, but they’re there if you know where to look. Becky Bartlett is the president of the Abenaki Waterski Club, which practices and competes on the still waters of Wolfeboro’s Back Bay. The all-ages, all-abilities club has about 50 members, she said, including people who live in the area year-round and people who come up for just a week. Bartlett understands the attractions of other water sports, but says there’s a special draw for waterskiing. “I personally just love the feeling of going around the buoys, seeing how well you can do,” she said. Then there are the jumps. Abenaki has jumps that are usually five feet high and, depending on the skill of the jumper and the speed of the boat, can launch a skier airborne for up to 100 feet. “Oh my gosh, when you hit that ramp and you’re flying through the air, it’s so much fun,” she said. Want to see what competitive water skiing looks like? The Abenaki Waterski Club is hosting slalom, jump and trick competitions on June 22, July 20-21 See next page

WINERIES & BREWERIES

By Adam Drapcho THE LACONIA DAILY SUN

T

here are more than a dozen breweries, wineries and distilleries in the Lakes Region, and probably more than a few that visitors to the area haven’t heard of. And, some of those craft beverage producers say, that might be a good thing. Though it’s less than a decade old, Hermit Woods Winery has established itself as the most high-profile of the Lakes Region’s wineries. The operation started in 2011, in one of the bedrooms of Bob Manley’s Sanbornton home,

and within a couple of years it moved to downtown Meredith. Each year, production and sales have increased by at least 20 percent, and Hermit Woods is now on pace to produce about 3,500 cases in a year. Hermit Woods has made a name for itself by producing wines based on non-grape fruits. Unlike most fruit wines, though, they aren’t dessert-sweet wines. Instead, Ken Hardcastle, the winemaker at Hermit Woods, aims for Old World-style flavors. The wine world has taken notice, and often selects Hermit Woods’ wines as the winner in tasting competitions. In 2017, Food and Wine magazine

included Hermit Woods among its list of the “500 Best Wineries in America.” Hermit Woods wines are now found in many local restaurants, craft beverage shops and state liquor stores, and the winery just added a pair of 1,500gallon tanks to help keep up with production. Their rosé and petit blue – the latter of which includes more than a pound of blueberries in each bottle – are consistently their volume leaders. With their current equipment, Hermit Woods could produce up to 5,000 cases of wine each year see BREWERIES page 52

And that’s as much as they will ever make, Manley said, because their business is built around a personal connection to their wines and to their customers. “By building this relationship with our customer base, it’s building a buzz,” Manley said. If they were to push for more than 5,000 cases, he said, the production would start to become “more manufacturing than the crafting of wines,” and he wants to retain the connection that his company has with downtown Meredith. “We’re not shooting for big distribution – our core is still here,” Manley said. “If you want

to experience Hermit Woods, you have to come here.”

Old barns, new brewery

Just a mile away, a new brewery has come to town. Located on Route 3 near the traffic circle, Twin Barns Brewing Company is opening this summer by mid-June, owner Dave Picarillo and head brewer Samuel Clemens said. With 10 barrels, Twin Barns will be one of the biggest breweries in the Lakes Region. But it doesn’t aim to be one of the biggest in New England. Instead of wondering how much beer they can sell, they want to focus on quality and variety. “We are going to have a bit of everything,” Clemens said. His

early plans include sour ales, low-gravity stouts, an American porter, a New England IPA and a refreshing golden ale he calls his “lawnmower beer.” And he will continue to watch the trends and innovations of the beer industry with an eye for what he can experiment with next in Meredith. Whatever Clemens comes up with, you’ll need to visit the taproom in Meredith to try it. “All the beer that we’re brewing will be served on-site,” he said. Twin Barns – so named because it’s actually two barns that were conjoined – will feature 10 taps and also serve See next page

food. The emphasis will be on the beer, though. Why not go for grander ambitions? Because Clemens knows what that looks like. He left the head brewer’s position at Long Trail, which distributes throughout more than a dozen states. With an operation that large, more effort is placed on marketing and packaging, seemingly, than on recipes, and even the act of canning or bottling beer can detrimentally change its flavor. “It has been a big change,” Clemens said about leaving Long Trail for Twin Barns. “It’s going down to something smaller. In the craft beer industry a smaller operation provides us an opportunity for creativity and to remain relevant to the local people who are who we are trying to serve.” As creative as Clemens gets, Picarillo said people with more mainstream palates shouldn’t be afraid to come in for a pint. “Sam’s going to have beer for a diverse set of tastes. There’s always going to be something on the menu for you,” Picarillo said.

hat is there for vacationers to eat in the Lakes Region? If you think it’s just deep-fried clams and mayo-slicked lobster salad on a buttered roll, it’s time to update your taste buds. More and more, local restaurateurs say, patrons are looking for food that will help them keep their beach bodies, and menus around the region are starting to

reflect that desire. “People are looking for lighter fare, trying to stay away from the carbs. We give people the opportunity to have protein and vegetables,” said Ken Choice, chef-owner of Ellacoya Barn and Grille in Gilford. Healthy proteins and fresh vegetables, and low- or no-carb dishes, are in demand. Patrons started asking for such a meal a few years ago, now they expect to have several options on the menu.

Cooking that way takes more time, and the ingredients cost a little more, but Choice doesn’t mind. For one thing, it gives him a new challenge and a new way to flex his creativity – and he gets to employ some of the flavors of his native New Mexico. And, Choice said, sending out a plate of healthy food just feels better. “I eat this way all the time, it makes me feel good, too,” he said. see RESTAURANTS page 74

Dave Henrick said he worried about the growing interest in no-carb eating as he was building his businesses, Lakeside Roast Beef and Pizza, and the 405 Pub and Grill, both in Laconia. But when his wife, Yvette Imhoff, started looking into the ketogenic diet, Henrick wondered how many of his menu items could be altered to eliminate the carbohydrates. Quite a few of them, he found out, especially once he found a zero-carb, cauliflower-based product that can replace the crust in a pizza and the bread in a wrap or panini. It doesn’t have quite the rise that bread or conventional pizza dough does, but it matches the crispy-chewy of a good crust, without ruining someone’s diet. “It’s really taken off at the 405,” Henrick said, and the healthier option is also gaining steam at his sub and pizza shop, which is inspired by the foods he ate growing up in Boston. Where he first saw the no-carb movement as a threat, he now sees it as an opportunity for his business. “It’s something that’s evolving, as it’s evolving, it will evolve into more. As they continue to perfect the cauliflower crust, the gluten-free dough,” he will look to offer more healthy choices for his customers, he said.

Even General Tso’s Chicken?

“Believe it or not, the last few years, more and more people are looking for light food, and healthy food,” said Yan Hong, owner of Shang Hai Restaurant in Laconia, which is celebrating 20 years in business this summer. People might not think of ChineseAmerican cuisine as healthy, but at Shang Hai, Hong has been working to dispel that see RESTAURANTS page 83

because they thought the chef made a mistake. She now has a growing and loyal vegetarian fan base who come to get their General Tso’s Chicken or Beef and Broccoli fix without straying from their diet. “I believe no matter where you are from, New York, California, they still need good food. Relax, you can still get pasta At Faro Italian Grille in The Weirs, the no-carb wave hits the rocks, said owner Rich Ray. “When you’re eating Italian, you’re cheating. You’re going for the pizza, you’re going for the pasta, you’re going for the chicken parm,” he said. Yet, even Ray had to admit that their salads, which can be topped with shrimp, chicken or steak tips, have grown into a best-seller. And, for red meat lovers, he stocks Piedmontese beef, a rare breed from the Piedmont region of Italy that is exceptionally low in fat yet high in flavor and still tender when cooked medium-rare. Ray said the beef is so low in fat that it’s as healthy as seafood. But it tastes so good that his customers might not even know it. “They love it. We get people that specifically come in just for it,” Ray said.
