I

t’s our 100th edition and 9th Birthday and this edition is all about acknowledging and celebrating you and your creations and acknowledging all the people who have contributed to Holistic Bliss over the years!!! The collaborative energy is what continues to make this magazine what it is and we are delighted to see how it has grown organically, reaching people all over Australia and New Zealand in hard copy and online, and in about 30 countries online… Since the magazine’s conception, I have been meeting inspiring people nearly every week and have had the privilege to share their unique work and expression in the magazine. I have to be honest and say I had mixed feelings about being on the cover this month, as I have always wanted to give other people the opportunity. But when we did a social media post a few

months ago asking for nominations for the April cover, it was clear that people wanted to hear the Holistic Bliss story and even though it hasn’t always been easy for me to be the centre of attention, I will say that I am very grateful indeed to be chosen. And thank-you Nicole Taryn and Krishna Everson for interviewing me and sharing your creativity and my journey. It has been a life-changing process starting the magazine from scratch at just eight pages. o celebrate Holistic Bliss Magazine’s 9th birthday, I thought we’d count down nine wacky world records and interesting facts to do with your gut.

9 – SIZE MATTERS The longest ever recorded human poop was an astonishing 7.92 metres! The record was set in 1995 by a woman in USA. Don’t ask me how they measured that. 8 – YOU AREN’T WHAT YOU EAT Did you know that when you have a bowel movement, most of what comes out isn’t actually the food you’ve eaten? At least 80% is water, bacteria and skin cells! Which means that less than 20% of your poop is the food you’ve eaten. 7 – SPACE JUNK There are four bags of poop on the moon, left behind by Neil Armstrong on his Apollo mission. When you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go!

6 – SUSHI SUSHI Ever get a rumbly belly after eating sushi? It might not be the raw fish – the western gut microbiome just hasn’t evolved to properly digest the polysaccharide in seaweed. Japanese people, however, have developed the enzyme required from marine bacteria to eat as much seaweed as they like. 5 – HIT REFRESH The intestine is the most highly regenerative organ in the human body, completely regenerating its lining every five to seven days. Crumbed Paleo Eggplant Steaks RECIPE MARIE ANITA JAMES

(GF, dairy free, vegetarian) Marie recommends sourcing organic ingredients whenever possible and as close to home as available. Ingredients: 2 organic eggplants 1 cup buckwheat flour ¼ cup almond milk 4 organic/free range eggs 2 cups quinoa flakes 1/3 cup psyllium husks Salt and pepper, to taste 2-3 sprigs thyme, stalks removed 2-3 sprigs rosemary, roughly chopped Organic coconut oil for frying Method: 1. Slice eggplants into rounds approximately 1.5cm thick. Sprinkle salt across both sides of the eggplant and allow to sit. The salt will draw moisture from the eggplant rounds and remove some of the eggplant’s bitterness. 2. Whisk together the almond milk and

eggs for the egg wash and set aside. 3. Mix together in a bowl the quinoa flakes, psyllium husks, ¼ cup buckwheat flour, salt, pepper, thyme and rosemary. 4. Pat the eggplant rounds dry. 5. To crumb the eggplant, each eggplant round must be firstly coated in buckwheat flour and then coated in the egg wash. Lastly the eggplant will be pressed firmly into the crumb ensuring to cover each round well. 6. Continue the three-step process until all rounds are crumbed. 7. Heat a large fry pan on a medium heat with coconut oil. Once the coconut oil is bubbling, cook a few eggplant rounds at a time on each side until cooked through and golden brown (a few minutes on each side). 8. Pat dry once cooked to remove any excess oil. 9. Serve with dressed greens and vegan beetroot aioli (or your choice of sides).

Chocolate Hemp Muffins

(VEGAN) Ingredients: 85g good quality vegan dark chocolate (70% or higher) 2 tbsp hemp seeds + a little extra more for topping 2 tbsp extra virgin/cold-pressed coconut oil 113g dried figs (you may use a little more for sweetness) Method: Prepare muffin tin with non-stick spray. Blend ½ bar vegan dark chocolate, hemp seeds, coconut oil and figs in a food processor until you have a smooth paste. Break up the remaining chocolate into little bits and fold chocolate pieces into the chocolate paste/mix. Press mix into muffin tin cups and sprinkle hemp seeds on top. I

n the past month I’ve had the adventure of visiting Tokyo twice! In fact, over the past year as my business has expanded and my vision for my life has come to fruition, I’ve had time in France, NZ, Tahiti, the USA and Brazil. To top it all off, I had three wonderful weeks at Noosa Heads both attending and holding classes, just before Christmas. I had not travelled outside of Australia before, except to New Zealand, so for me to travel alone for weeks at a time has been quite interesting! I’ve had to change and adapt in ways I could not have imagined. For one thing, ‘time’ does not have the same power of limitation anymore – sleep when you’re tired, eat when you’re hungry! Just a choice! For someone like me, who’s always been ‘hypersensitive’ or ‘high strung’ – it’s been daunting, challenging and

to travel! fabulous all at once! I call myself an Urbane Mystic – I like the finer things in life, as I seek more awareness and consciousness and connection with the earth. I’m a seeker who likes a good glass of wine! Tokyo was a complete surprise. I had visions of thousands of people crowding the streets, of constant noise and pollution. What I found was order, rules, neatness, tiny attention to details, and yes, the vastness of the city (38 million people), which could all be suffocating, but there is an underlying dedication to aesthetics in everything. I did not feel pressured or anxious at all. Aesthetics is the awareness that beauty nourishes the being and the body at a deep level. And beauty is not a ‘surface’ thing. From the array of little ceramic dishes on my lacquered breakfast tray, each containing delicious foods of a different form, colour, taste and texture;

to the view of the tiny garden outside the window, where even the trees have been trained and supported to grow in shapes pleasing to the eye, this culture has a consciousness, some might say spirituality, which draws you to connect with nature even in the middle of a city. And it is soothing and delightful at the same time. So how can we create environments which nurture the body, the being and the earth, as we move forward in an increasingly fast, busy and crowded world? It has taken many years for my business and life to blossom. As I turn 60 this year, I can definitely say that it’s never too late to do what you’ve always dreamed off, to start a new business or a new adventure! Have no walls, barriers, shields and protection against anything: we tend to create walls and barriers around us as a way of protecting ourselves from the situations and the people that we don’t want to be part of our life. With these walls, we are cutting off our awareness, so we won’t have any idea about what is going on behind the ‘scenes’. These walls are our judgments about good and bad, as well as anything that doesn’t fit into our reality and will be left outside of these walls, though they still exist. So these walls and barriers actually don’t protect us, but separate us from our awareness. True protection is when you know what is coming your way – the good, the bad and the ugly. When you choose to have no barriers to anything, that allows you to be fully aware of what is going on

around you and by looking at the situation from that space, it allows you to choose what creates more for you. Would you desire to use your awareness and have more clarity when you are choosing a partner, finding a new job, buying a house, choosing a diet, a personal trainer or booking accommodation and flights? Also, having no barriers allows your body to get out from the contraction and be in a relaxed space, where it can start to rest, recover and thrive. Let’s make it clear, being vulnerable is not equal to being a doormat of love, actually it has nothing to do with that. So while you are vulnerable, you are willing to receive all the information without judging it, so you don’t lie to and blind yourself. And so nobody can abuse you anymore. For example, when there is a disagreement between you and your partner that you would like to quickly resolve with ease, please look at the

following steps that always worked brilliantly for us. Ask yourself to lower your barriers and to receive everything from and about your partner, and both of your judgments, expectations and everything else that your barriers would hide from you. Allow your body and your being to receive all of that and let go all of your points of view. Very soon you both will feel more relaxed and eased up. More ease with your colleagues WORDS PATINA EDWARDS

ho hasn’t at some point had a colleague who drove you batty or who made your worklife uncomfortable, or even miserable? These dynamics can stifle your creativity, diminish your enthusiasm at work, and be upsetting. What if you could keep your mojo buoyant and not be at the effect of anyone else, at work or otherwise? Put Your Dukes Down Are you habitually dueling with a colleague over who is right and who is wrong? That can be a huge energy waster and limit your awareness of what’s actually possible. Tool: Acknowledge the other party’s thinking by saying “That’s an interesting point of view.” You’re not aligning and agreeing or resisting or reacting to their viewpoint but simply acknowledging it. That alone can calm people’s jets and invite them to hear other viewpoints. More powerful still is to use questions to get you both exploring other possibilities. Ask: What else is possible here that we haven’t considered?

Tool: Lower your barriers. When you are being defensive, you energetically put up a wall to whoever or whatever you are not willing to receive from. When you lower your barriers (simply by asking them to lower) you are not in defence mode and another person has nothing to fight against. Acknowledge That You Have Choice It sounds counterintuitive but for us to ever feel like a victim, we have to in some way not be acknowledging the choices we have. You could close your office door if someone’s booming voice constantly annoys you or ask for mediation for ongoing tension with a colleague that you haven’t been able to resolve yourselves. When you believe you don’t have choice, you can not create the change you desire. Acknowledging that you have choices is empowering. Ask: What choices do I have here that I’m not acknowledging? What choice can I make today to change this dynamic? Don’t Let Niggles Build Up If you have built a cache of complaints against a colleague, use this

tool daily to clear the air so you can have a new relationship with them every day. Tool: Destroy and uncreate your relationship with your colleague every night. Simply say: “Everything our relationship was today, I destroy and uncreate it.” Bullying Bullying is never okay. A key to freedom here is to acknowledge the behaviour for what it is and not to put up with it. Seek assistance from those who have your back or the authority to address the behaviour. Keeping things secret only empowers a bully. Speaking up can be a catalyst for change for potentially many other people as well. Kia kaha. Be strong. Tool: Speak up. Find a confidante within or outside your organisation. You may not become best buddies, though who knows what’s possible if you use these tools. once found a quote by an unknown person in a book about fascia I could relate to so well I’ve taken it and applied it to my personal growth and as an instructor in Kahuna Sciences and Aligned Movement. “The intelligence of an individual can be determined by the speed of their ability to adjust to change.” For me, the resonance of these words so beautifully condensed into a universal

statement, clarifies the meaning of existence. I spent eight years learning the sciences of Kahuna from Kahu Abraham Kawai’i. I learnt Kahuna Bodywork, Ho’omanamana, sustenance management and Hula, but the common denominator within all was change through motion. “The universe is an entity in motion and evolution is its angel” (Kahu) was

Our body is conservative with its energy, so when a muscle or group of muscles aren’t doing their muscular job of contraction and release, the motor neurons that form a pathway from the central nervous system to the muscles are no longer connected. I see the brain as a city lit up and the lights gradually turning off as range of motion becomes restricted to daily repetitious patterns and routines. If you think about the majority of your movements in a day, they’re primarily limited to forward flexion. The muscles used for these activities are given the bulk of oxygenated blood and nerve supply and a limited amount for underused muscles. Check out your toes and feet for example. The reason why you can’t isolate the individual movements of your toes or the bones of your feet (like you can your hands and fingers) is because they’re usually stuffed into shoes designed to prevent the movement of your 26 bones and 33 joints until it’s no

longer possible to walk barefoot without pain. Reconnecting neural pathways to underused muscles requires determination and a deep desire for change. Our body carries us through this life, without its full range of motion eventually our dreams and efforts are without foundation. Our nervous system is the generator for all bodily motion. We don’t have to think about breathing when we’re asleep, our body breathes for us. Our body digests our food, moves it through the different processes and organs extracting nourishment and expelling waste every second of our life without our full awareness or conscious input. The only active involvement we have with movement, is the desire to move and the direction and speed of that movement. In this way, our mind sets the scene and our body puts it into motion for better or worse. I call this the psychology of motion. How we do anything expresses our relationship with us. I’ve found the quickest way to change my mind is to change the way I move my body. We can’t change the way we do a thing, like the way we hold our knife and fork or walk. Once that pathway has been established it’s unchangeable, but we can learn a new way to make that same movement. We have the desire,

then the amount of energy and focus directed towards that new movement determines the speed. It takes time, persistence and consistency. Exactly the same as when we first learnt to walk, talk, use our hands for specialised tasks like writing, using tools, balancing, whistling, sports, musical instruments etc. As adults, we tend to forget how long it took us to become skilled in our everyday movements. To excel at any profession, sport or art, the learning never stops. In fact it seems the more we learn, the less we know. Learning a new way to accomplish a familiar task, takes us back to our beginnings. We slow down, we become more aware of our movements, sensing our position and directing our movements instead of moving automatically through our days disconnected to what our body is doing. In my Aligned Movement classes I begin with constructive rest to change the nervous system from flight/ fright-sympathetic, to rest/digestparasympathetic. This process creates space in our mind and body, promoting a cooperative communication between the two. From here, we move into micro movements of the joints to determine range of motion without engaging other

parts of the body to appear like we have more than we realistically have. Once that’s established, we can start moving within that free space in different ways outside of our usual patterns. The position of our joints is determined by muscular tension, so it’s important to encourage the body and mind to let go of tension, to feel safe in that release, then to move within that new space. My understanding of how my body functions as an entity in motion, inspires me to take responsibility for my situation by actively directing my focus and energy towards changing unsustainable movement patterns as soon as I feel myself out of balance. I don’t want the lights in my precious brain turning off simply because I’ve limited my range of motion. I take every opportunity to sit on the floor, place my body in a variety of rest positions, walk barefoot inside and outside and connect consciously to the core movement of my limbs to support the longevity of my joints and organs. Finding new ways to move your body and learning new skills contributes to the evolving intelligence of both your CNS and gut brain, worthy of your focus and energetic wealth. have a confession to make. It is so important to celebrate, and I didn’t! Let me share.

Then I woke up one day and said this is it. I took myself away and I wrote my two books in five days. Or as I like to say 100,000 words in 45 hours. Did I celebrate then? NO! Then I published the book in six weeks. Did I celebrate? NO! I did a Facebook live book launch and that was so out of my comfort zone. Miracles happened in 45 minutes – did I celebrate? NO! Five weeks later as I was driving home from the airport after speaking in Melbourne, I suddenly was aware I had not recognised what I had done, what I had achieved or how I had helped so many people. I decided at that moment to celebrate with a gift to myself that I have always wanted since I was 18 years old. I bought myself white opal earrings – my birth stone. Sure enough there was a shop on my way home and they had exactly what I wanted. I sat in the car and opened the box with full intention and recognition of me and my

achievements and passion. I burst in to tears with such gratitude and love. I allowed all the old stories of being told I was dumb, stupid and will never make it in life or in business fly out the window, as I knew I can do anything. The most important thing was to celebrate. I encourage you to celebrate you. Listen to your heart and put you first. Your body will thank you. My absolute love to you. eventeen years ago, I wanted to die. Desperately. No one knew. Except me. No one even suspected. From the outside looking in, everything looked fine. Actually, better than fine. I had a chiropractic office in Santa Barbara. I was getting ready to open a second one. I was engaged to a girl that everyone thought was perfect for me. I was the guy most people wanted to be. And yet, I was miserable. In an attempt to fix me, to make the depression and sadness go away, I tried everything. Modality after modality. Self-help and personal development books, workshops, seminars… you name it. I tried it. Nothing worked. Nothing would ease that continuous nagging of desperation and dissatisfaction. One day I woke up and decided, “That’s it! I am done. I am not doing this anymore.” I told the universe, “I

am out of here! You have 6 months to change something or I am killing myself.” I meant every word I said. I set the date. I made the plan. Six months from that date, if nothing had changed, I was ending it all. Apparently, my demand was heard. I asked for change. Little did I know that literally everything was about to change. And even less did I know how it would show up. Two weeks after my suicidal plan, I was reading through a newspaper. There was a tiny little ad that said, “All of life comes to me with ease, joy and glory. Call Shannon.” I threw the paper down. Are you kidding me? Ease, joy and glory? Nobody has that! It’s more like pain, suffering and gory. Needless to say, the paper went in the bin. A few days later, I was reading the paper and yet again, there was that very same ad. “All of life comes to me with

ease, joy and glory. Call Shannon.” Still highly annoyed, I thought, “What the heck? What have I got to lose?” and I called Shannon. When Shannon picked up the phone, I said, “I saw your ad. hat is worthy of your devotion? What calls you so strongly that you cannot resist, knowing that it is truly yours to do? Back in 1971, when I was in grade seven, all I wanted was to become a ‘Sister of Mary’. They were the high school girls, who glided like angels into

church every Saturday morning wearing these soft blue capes over their dresses. Like an apparition, they appeared so pure, so beautiful, so mysterious. Oh, I so wanted that! Imagine how disappointed I was when they abolished the practice just as I came into grade eight! Even though I have not been a practising Catholic since the age of 16,

I am profoundly aware that those early years formed a deep impression on me and an appreciation of the sacred, of devotion, of dedication, of kindness and of love. And it also left its mark with its underbelly of sexual repression, shame and guilt. But you don’t have to be Catholic to experience these things. Just by being in general society, differing

religions, family backgrounds, bound by rules, some that are almost beyond humanly possible – all these leave their mark. Have you ever had something in your life that you feel so led to do but it defies your mind that it is yours to carry through? At no point did I ever think, “I will be a sex educator. Or I will be a Tantra teacher”, nor do I even feel this as an identity that is fixed. I can never land there. To be honest the Catholic girl inside the woman is still catching up with the whole idea. It has been a choiceless choice. But one of devotion. I found this quote while writing. “Devotion is a commitment to something we care about deeply. It is passionate focus on our life’s purpose. It is wholehearted service to an endeavour that we love. Discernment is the first step in discovering what is worthy of our devotion.” The dark night of the soul that led to this devotion was in my mid 30s. I felt emotionally unstable, experiencing devastating mood swings, depression, anxiety and lack of ‘libido’ which left me feeling like half a woman. I was convinced I was broken. Unknowingly I was in perimenopause – the period before actual menopause (when you no longer have periods for

one year). In my 30s! This meant that my hormones were wreaking havoc. I had no understanding of what was going on. No doctor could give any hope about perimenopause, and what to expect. Sex? By the time I was 40, it hurt. And I just wanted to run a mile. Then I read a few words in The Australian by Ruth Ostrow, back in 2002. She’d interviewed Diana Richardson, now author of eight books on conscious sexuality and love. She talked about making love in awareness, millimetre by millimetre. And that women did not have to make love like a man. And about making love a meditation. I thought, I want to meet this woman! That desire was fulfilled just six years later. Amazingly, I was blessed to experience the healing and insightful ‘Making Love Retreat’ in Switzerland with Diana Richardson and her partner, Michael. After following the instructions given during the ‘Making Love Retreat’, instead of the usual pain, agitation or down feeling I would feel after making love, I experienced a deep peace I had never known before. I became less emotional and more loving. Which has lasted! Then I knew I was onto something. By day three, I thought, this work can change the world! If both women and men could understand this and be willing to follow it through to reap its benefits,

imagine how peaceful and more loving they would be as people? Imagine how they would be as parents? Imagine what an impact it would have on their family, their community? The world! So, through the pain and suffering of an early menopause, I’d found my devotion. After a few years of training, I went on to co-present the retreat in Australia with my partner. I am now honoured to have co-authored a book on sexuality and menopause with Diana. Even though sex is still a taboo subject and I feel people’s discomfort about it, I cannot not follow this path. I am sure that innocent child wanting to be a ‘Sister of Mary’ would never have dreamed she would grow up to do what she is doing. But perhaps her devotion to love had something to do with it. So what is worthy of your devotion? What is your “yes”? What calls you so strongly that you cannot resist, knowing that it is truly yours to do? I’d love to hear. T

he essence of 100 has always been powerful. It can represent a perfect score, a major milestone, and a sense of wholeness. This month we celebrate the 100th edition of Holistic Bliss Magazine, and who better to feature on the cover, than magazine founder and publisher Vanessa Finnigan, who has shone the light on the work of those who are impacting our planet and its citizens, for nine years. Like many of us working in the healing arts, it can be quite a journey to uncover our unique gifts and explore ways we can make a difference for the greater good. Vanessa’s love of creativity and personal development, plus deep desire to facilitate change in herself and others, have led her on the Holistic Bliss path. Vanessa began studying psychology and some journalism subjects at university, but after finding it extremely theoretical, embarked on a Lifeline telephone counselling course, and by 19 was on the phone as a volunteer counsellor while she continued her studies. She knew she wanted to be part of people’s change processes and was interested in her own growth and development, and became a registered psychologist in her mid-twenties. “I was just continuing to be blown away by the change that I witnessed, the people that I met. I was starting to meet people from the holistic wellness fields that were creating really dynamic

change, either in their own lives, or in other people’s lives. It was like a switch turned on inside myself. I can remember going to workshops and talking to a variety of international speakers, and at times being in tears with what they were sharing about the change that was occurring. There was just a real knowing in me that was like yeah, this type of dynamic change is possible, and transformation is possible,” Vanessa explains. For years Vanessa devoured spiritual, self-help and personal development books and became involved in meditation. She took time off psychology, and honoured a deeper calling. Vanessa had given away her worldly goods to friends and family and moved to New Zealand where she meditated full time for three months. “After nearly three months of meditating, I received the inner message to experience life more fully,” she says. It was time for a new experience and some more travel. “I moved to Taiwan and taught English to these gorgeous Taiwanese children and continued to meditate. I wasn’t actually sure which direction I wanted to go in. I just wanted to create more. I started writing. And after a year of living in Taiwan, I moved back to Brisbane and the first article that I wrote got published in a magazine and got paid for. So my journey as a freelance writer began, having holistic articles published in Australia and overseas.” A few years later Vanessa moved to the Sunshine Coast for a job opportunity

but it didn’t work out, and so her partner and close friend suggested the possibility of starting her own publication. Vanessa reflects, “I wanted to create a forum for people to share their uniqueness. I wanted to include as many modalities, as many inspiring stories as I could. I also wanted to be able to write myself, I wanted to be able to interview, and share those stories. So I thought, I could create a magazine. It was very exciting just thinking about all the potential. I had a little bit of savings, and I thought, I’m just going to create it, and we’ll see where it goes from there.” Surprisingly, when Vanessa began the magazine, she had no concrete goals or expectations of what things were going to look like. What she did have was a sense of excitement around what was possible. Her willingness to trust in her awareness of energies, allowed her to perceive a golden colour and a lightness when she sat with the idea of creating a magazine. To this day, Vanessa says she moves in the direction of experiences, stories and people that are energetically congruent with that initial energy. She knew that the magazine would involve many people and that it would contribute to transformation and change. By trusting in this process, Vanessa has allowed the magazine’s journey to unfold, evolve and to organically grow. She remains focused on what the magazine requires from her, rather than what she requires from the magazine. “When things start to get too hard or heavy, I move in another direction, or I change my attitude, I do some physical

exercise and then some type of energy work, I focus on what I am grateful for, and I remember why I started the magazine. I get out of my own way, and this provides the magazine with the freedom to weave its own magic.” “I didn’t know I could do the magazine until I actually did the magazine” says Vanessa, who is also quick to point out that it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Vanessa has faced many of her own personal challenges, requiring vulnerability and courage and the willingness to change perspectives to allow the magazine to move in the direction it needed to. Vanessa

explains that being okay with getting uncomfortable has been a necessary part of the magazine’s evolution. “Self-doubt does show up, but there has always been something driving me as well – this is really important, and I really want to keep going with this. This is part of creating, or contributing to the change process and for people to see that true change is possible.” Further exploration of the woman behind the Holistic Bliss name, reveals intelligence, humility, wisdom and an unwavering enthusiasm for personal and global transformation. The processes involved in putting an edition of Holistic

Bliss Magazine together run deeper than simply filling advertising and article space. There is an entanglement of facilitation that occurs for all involved, from the advertisers, to the distributors, to the readers, and even for Vanessa. Each edition is a treasure trove of new possibilities and Vanessa attributes this greatly to her commitment to constantly ask questions about what is required, what is possible and who is ready to show up to be a part of the change process. Despite her unassuming nature, Vanessa Finnigan together with Holistic Bliss Magazine, create a powerful platform for conscious transformation. t is only a heartbeat, or a breath between staying in the same place, or shifting into something else, that new direction that is aligned with who you are becoming. Many of us have dreams and desires yet we find it hard to see ourselves as we are in the now, still replaying the old aspects of self without recognition or even celebration of what has been achieved each day. The action of showing up and getting on with what is in front of us can seem daunting enough, let alone starting new things that just might deliver us to the life we truly know exists in our dreams. We can drag ourselves through each day, finding so many excuses to NOT move into what calls to us from within, or we can decide, yes we can decide, we DO NOT need permission, to do something different, to experience something more in tune with who we are. “I don’t know enough”, “I haven’t

got enough experience”, “Maybe I am kidding myself”, “There are so many others doing what I want to do”, “What makes me special?”, “I will get my life sorted, or my house decluttered, or the next course out of the way before I take steps towards what I really desire”… sound familiar? We have all made the same excuses, we have all held ourselves in the comfort of pausing indefinitely until the ‘right time’ presents, or until we are given the green light to GO from somewhere outside of ourselves. The reality is, we are in charge of the life we live each day, we get to make the choices to do, be and feel what is in our soul’s evolutionary growth, it is the deep yearning to express our uniqueness in this world. Baby steps to big ideas WORDS ANTHEA SWAN

W

hen my children were young, things felt much slower than what I was used to. New mothers will relate. I wasn’t used to the feeling of emptiness, dreamy days in a fog of all things baby and felt like I lacked direction big time. It was uncomfortable. I wasn’t being called to do anything except just ‘be’. It was so weird. Kate Northrup calls this the ‘fertile void’, and I can now look back and honour that period for what it gifted me. When you’re in it though, it can be rough. For me this ‘fertile void’ cycle, where I had no real direction, lasted a couple of years, and it’s worth noting that it can be different for everyone. I had been in it for years but just hadn’t slowed down enough to notice. One day something shifted though, and ideas came into my awareness, seemingly out of nowhere. The thing that left me uneasy was, I never acted

on any of these ideas. You can probably relate. I wondered how I’d find the time to do any of them and this filled me with anxiety. I felt overwhelmed. Each day I tried to pretend that I was happy enough playing house but the ideas and possibilities continued to pile up and I continued to do nothing. I was drowning in my inaction. I knew I needed to act on something but didn’t know where to begin. I loved being a Mum and felt blessed to be able to stay at home with my babies but I also had a burning desire to start doing something that wasn’t housework, snacks or nappies. My soul was calling me and I could no longer ignore it. I sat in this uncomfortable feeling for a while and it wasn’t until a health scare with my youngest that I was reminded that we don’t know when our time is up. If there are things we want to experience or birth into this world, then now is the time to start

because we might not have tomorrow. I learnt that tiny baby steps towards an idea are better than none at all. This shift in thinking helped me to put some ideas into action. At the time my fiancé worked away, and I learnt it was possible to do many things, even with two kids at home, on your own. It just required a change of perspective, a bit of juggling and belief in myself. I realised I’d been the one limiting myself and what I was capable of. The kids even seemed freakishly peaceful when I was feeling good. And I felt good when I was doing something for me. Even if it was for only 20 minutes a day. So take one, tiny step toward bringing an idea you’ve had to life. You never know where it might lead. Being ‘whole’ is your Divine inheritance – recognising it is a state of mind

B

eing ‘whole’ is an integration of body, mind and spirit. When we experience the perception of compromise, there can never be a genuine sensation of ‘wholeness’. Rest assured, however, that sensation arises from a state of mind – it relies on nothing more than perception – and as such, like any thought, it can be changed. The truth is that you are always ‘whole’ – it is your divine inheritance – you simply need to remember and recognise that reality. The modern world tries to get us to buy in to the idea that ‘balance’ is a substitute for being ‘whole’, but it is typically a very different concept that relies upon the perception of ‘compromise’. When we perceive compromise, the energetic pull seems to be downwards and primal animal instincts related to ensuring pure survival can arise. Consequently, we may experience emotions and desires including fear, anger, paranoia, the desire to control and attachment to certain outcomes. If we become

immersed in such thoughts, it can lead to us attempting to play off our Spirit against the mind and body. It is in just such circumstances that you owe it to yourself – and others – to be mindful of the truism, “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance,” and maintain your conscious alignment with Spirit. You need never compromise your Spiritual integrity – and it is likely that you could not, even if you tried. Spirit is an infinite resource that can be drawn upon to moderate the physical and mental effects of the ebb and flow of life. Research shows, for example, that those with a personal Spiritual orientation experience a higher quality of life than others on a variety of measures (interestingly, in many advanced countries, that Spiritual orientation dwindles [as do many measures of well-being] as education rates rise). Perhaps, instead of seeking ‘balance’, we could accept our divine nature and embrace our ‘resourcefulness’. For a moment, consider some of the synonyms for

‘resourceful’: ingenious; imaginative; inventive; creative; quick-witted; clever; bright; sharp; talented; gifted; able; capable; spirited; enthusiastic; ambitious; energetic; and vigorous. These are all intrinsic qualities that can be accessed with a discerning and vigilant mind. Remaining consciously connected spiritually will also keep the lines of communication open with your inner Guru (your intuition is part of the divine spark that you carry in each incarnation). The message from the Higher Self that is always reaching out to engage the conscious mind is consistent: you are divine (even if it comes in different forms, such as “you are eternal”, “you are pure”, “you are worthy of love”, “you are forgiven” and the like). Remain mindful, listen to your inner Guru, remember your divinity and know you are always ‘whole’! life of purpose

I

n my life, I’ve had many different jobs. My unending questions and nomadic ancestry have led me to learn and explore continually. Some people will tell you that it’s important to know what you want to do when you grow up. That you should know. That there is something horribly wrong if you don’t. What I say is this: It is very important to reflect and get clear on what you want to give the world, the doing will take care of itself. I knew from the start that it was kindness, love, reassurance and a sense of trust that I wanted to share most. So I set about sharing these qualities in everything I did. While I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, I clearly knew what I wanted to BE. So I infused these qualities into every little task at my fingertips. In each moment, I offered all of myself with sincerity. I worked for lawyers and disability

services, I waitressed and worked in schools, I even massaged and had my own healing centre. I became a project manager for strategic change in government, dived into motherhood, designed jewellery, created a vintage hire company and at the same time found any excuse to write. I wrote letters, resumes, job applications, prayers, ceremonies and even speeches for others, I also wrote parts of my book. All of those roles, while diverse and ever changing, strengthened my ability to listen, share my gifts and serve life. My deep desire to be a warm hug of kindness, love and reassurance allowed me to be of benefit wherever I was. Now I don’t know what dreams lay in your heart; but I do know that you have gifts unlike anyone else on the planet. This doesn’t make you more or less special. It makes it crucial that

The cost of

giving too much

H

ave you had burnout, PTSD, depression or grief as unwanted ‘health’ guests throughout your career? You could possibly be suffering from Compassion Fatigue, which costs you money, time, energy, relationships and is very hard to disconnect from if undiagnosed. Compassion Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is the opposite to Compassion Satisfaction. It happens to people in caring, giving roles, be it career or in everyday life. In this article I will talk about the professional career person and you can relate it to your personal role. CFS is the result of helping people or animals for which you care, love, teach, nurse, protect, defend etc. In the beginning, it was your passion and purpose to choose this career or role in life, but over time it has taken its toll and it now controls your life. While working in your chosen field, your client, patient, student, WILL trigger and reignite any unresolved, emotional trauma and/or abuse you

personally experienced and/or suffered which has never been healed in your past. Your sub-conscious ‘mind-genie’ keeps reliving these past negative memories, trapping you in daily life, until dissolved, healed and replaced. A question to ask yourself is, “does this remind me of me or someone else in my past?” Am I giving to others (saving, fixing, rescuing, defending, protecting) more than what I didn’t receive in my younger years? Making it better for others at the detriment of my own needs, consciously or unconsciously? CFS will keep you in careers and relationships you have outgrown, putting up with bullying and intimidation, feeling like you are not heard, or your worth makes a difference to anyone. Even when you change jobs, it soon becomes the same as before. Sound familiar? Recently, I held a self-compassion workshop and at the end of the workshop, a nurse named Bridget (not her real name) confided in me that it

How do you harmonise or rebalance something that seems entrenched? WORDS AMANDA MACKAY

A

s some of you know, I’m a second generation healer which certainly doesn’t mean my life has been without challenges, none of which I would change, as they are the very experiences that have accelerated my biggest growth and why I am able to assist others along their way. In the past few years, I have healed a lot of emotional pain inherited from my mum (she passed over 11 years ago), which has shown me how much we absorb during the birth process. The emotions of both parents, the environment and circumstances of the conception and the stages through this miraculous process all have an impact. As I began exploring this in healing with clients, I could see how much of an impact ‘Energetic DNA’ has on the individual. An adult that struggles to connect and maintain a healthy relationship, may have been a baby that had challenges when feeding, therefore may feel unable to communicate their needs and feel unheard. This may present as

self-sabotage but is a pattern from those early learning stages. I have known amazing business women whom are creative, successful, dynamic and making an impact, so what holds them back at different stages? The energetic imprint of feeling held back, unworthy or powerless absorbed during gestation from the mother as a direct impact of her own life experience. So when you have a life pattern or belief system that seems out of alignment with your higher self or creates great resistance in your life, it could be an inherited energy. The wonderful thing about energy is you can rebalance and harmonise a distortion or vibration that is out of its normal state of being and attune it to your soul tone. Because this was being shown to me as being a significant form of healing, I wanted to share it with as many people as possible, how was I going to do that? This is where the inspired idea came in, record the sessions! As many of you who have walked down the long

healing path know, there are layers to unfold, so to have access to these tracks as many times as the client needs, made perfect sense. How many times have you had a healing, and thought this (issue) again?! It may seem never ending and feel frustrating. Again the beauty of energy is the intention that is set when creating. Now of course this took longer than I thought but the feedback for the completed ‘Birth Healing Series’ has been encouraging! So many people I have met, worked and trained with have brought me to this, I believe all conversations and interactions have worth, one sentence can spark a new direction full of purpose. fit and healthy: Part 3

T

he best part about completing the transformation program, wasn’t about who I became, or losing 35kg, or having to replace my entire wardrobe of clothes, making my boys proud or even knowing I was not at risk of death any more. It was the journey, it was the sweat, the pain, the soreness, the massive struggle to get out of bed at 3.30am, the moaning, the groaning, the WTF new exercises, the challenge of going to the gym, the shooting down with a sniper rifle my negative thoughts, and the laughter, with those unrepeatable funny moments, like failing a star jump badly. I never expected to feel so strong or so good within myself. I was amazed with my physical ability and how great it felt to have lots of energy! My biggest joy was about the ‘doing it’, ‘working it’, ‘the living it’! There was a very special moment when I realised working out really wasn’t a chore, it was actually the

best part of the day and had been for a long time. The journey was the prize, not the destination. If I had one wish, it would be that other people could see and feel that too. Another gift of participating in Dmitri’s transformational program came at the very end. It was knowing within, I still had more potential to become healthier and fitter. I knew I had to keep the momentum going and for the very first time in my life, I wasn’t scared of working hard for it, it was something I simply had to do foremost for myself but also as a positive role model for my beautiful boys. So I continued to train. On 13th March 2016, I completed my first ever triathlon, the ‘Olympic Distance Triathlon’ at Mooloolaba. I had turned 50 years of age in February. I swam one mile in the ocean, cycled 40km on my bike and ran 10km in three hours and 32 minutes. It was one of the best days of my life.

In the same way, your body relies on ‘venting’ to pre-vent the build-up of toxic or viral overwhelm internally – that will otherwise cause the cold, flu or some other type of discomfort to manifest. Signs that you are suffering from a cold or flu include fever, chills,

congestion, ear, head and body aches and respiratory infection. And the first thing to realise is that ‘the flu’ is no mystery. o recently, as in last month, I had the vet come over to put our Deema, a 19-year-old Staffie, to sleep. There are so many layers to her life and story, it’s impossible to relay the extent of the powerful love she brought to the planet. Firstly, she was born with unconditional love and acceptance. Humans are so far behind in that one. Her absolute unabashed joy and excitement for water was beyond belief. She would cry loudly when she saw it.

It was her joy. Just to feel, see and smell the ocean would ignite her. Everyone at the beach knew her and would laugh and watch her love affair. It was contagious. She was born a free and happy spirit. She had four owners within our family, one moved overseas, my gorgeous, funny uncle died, and I inherited Deema. I shared her with my neighbour Ruth, who quickly fell in love with her too. She is our love, our roam-about. As

long as she got to go to the water every day, she could fight the destruction of age. How beautiful that she found her joy. Many of us are still searching. So in this month’s celebration issue even though it is still very raw for me, I feel the pain and celebrate anyway. ollectively, the health and beauty conscious amongst us spend huge amounts of money on personal care. But does this $US35 billion industry really care about its consumers? The answer may startle anyone who looks below the surface of today’s cosmetics. Never has the Latin phrase ‘caveat emptor’ (let the buyer beware) been more apt. Chemicals linked to cancer and birth defects do not belong in cosmetics. However, a survey of some common brands of shampoo, deodorant, face cream and other everyday products indicates that they do, in fact, contain such dangerous chemicals. And research shows that many of these chemicals have entered our bodies, our breast milk and our children. But surely there’s not enough in there to do any real damage? One of the challenges with keeping cosmetic safety in our awareness is that many of the chemicals in cosmetics don’t cause immediate, obvious damage, but still contain systemic toxins. It’s the long term exposure to

minuscule amounts of toxic chemicals in the multiple cosmetic products we apply to our body every day, over an entire lifetime that is the real cause for concern. The fact is, we are repeatedly exposed to industrial chemicals from many different sources on a daily basis, and we don’t even give it a second thought. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) surveyed 2300 people as part of their research into cosmetic ingredient safety and found that the average adult uses nine personal care products each day, with 126 unique chemical ingredients. More than a quarter of all women and one of every 100 men use at least 15 products daily (www.ewg.org/reports/bodyburden/). Unfortunately, there is very little research available to document the safety or health risks of low-dose repeated exposures to chemical mixtures like those in personal care products, but the absence of data should never be mistaken for proof of safety. But surely the government wouldn’t allow toxic cosmetics on the shelf? Most consumers would be surprised

to learn that the government does not require health studies or pre-market testing for cosmetics and other personal care products before they are sold. In the USA, the Environmental Working Group’s (www.ewg.org) analysis of industry and government sources shows that 89 percent of the 10,500 ingredients FDA has determined are used in personal care products, have not been evaluated for safety by the CIR, the FDA, or any other publicly accountable institution. To help people use what they learned, they developed an online rating system that ranks products on their potential health risks and the absence of basic safety evaluations; called Skin Deep (www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep/), the core of the analysis compares ingredients in 7500 personal care products against government, industry, and academic lists of known and suspected chemical health hazards. ccording to Nicole Bijlsma, Building Biologist, Healthy Home Expert and ambassador to Chemical Free Community, 1 in 3 children will experience allergies by the age of five. This dramatic increase of allergic diseases like: asthma, eczema, hayfever and food allergies can be linked to allergens in the home. Some of which can be caused by varying indoor moisture levels. We spend approx 90 percent of our time inside, so it is important to know how to manage the humidity in your home to reduce the occurrence of allergies and asthma. Moisture in the home is created by many things such as: breathing, cooking, washing, bathing, condensation, poor drainage, insufficient ventilation and water damage. Microorganisms that thrive in humid conditions are of special concern, as they can trigger allergies and asthmatic conditions. It takes only 48 hours for mould to start growing, for which moisture is the critical element. Mould looks like spots, comes in various colors and may appear fuzzy

and smell musty. The tiny spores mould releases into the air can trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks when touched or inhaled. What to do about feline renal failure WORDS DR ELAINE CEBULIAK

M

ost cats who live long enough develop some degree of kidney disease, and we can see it show up early even in younger cats. No one knows for sure what causes it; it is believed to be multi-factorial. CKD is the number one disease by far that we see in older cats. However, there are things you can do to help significantly slow down its progression.

1. Make a meal You can make a home-cooked gravy with meat juices, cooked squash veggies (such as pumpkin, zucchini) and butter to help flavour, add minerals and this improves gut health and digestion. 2. Water intake Anything that you can do to get your cat to drink more will help reduce the work load on your cat’s kidneys. Ways to do this include water fountains, multiple bowls of fresh water around the house, or adding things such as low-salt chicken broth, tuna juice, or add ice cubes to your cat’s water to encourage their fluid intake. 3. Rehmannia glutinosa THIS HERB REVERSES RENAL FAILURE! We use and recommended Liu wei di huang wan at a dose of one or two pills once or twice a day (depends on cat’s size and blood test results). Liu wei (or Rehmannia 6) is one of the most commonly used Chinese herb formulas in the world. It is very safe and is used in all stages of kidney disease. If you are home-cooking your cat’s diet you can buy the Rehmannia root at your local Chinese supermarket and add one gram

in each meal preparation. Sometimes this is too cloying and may result in loose stools, if so stop for a few days and decrease the dose. 4. Diet There is no need to switch to a kidney diet in stage I CKD. Kidney diets tend to be low in protein, which in later stages reduces the workload on the kidneys, but in early stages, protein is still good for kidneys, and needed for multiple other metabolic functions. 5. Monitoring We also recommend monitoring your cat’s kidneys once stage I CKD is detected by having blood work done every other month initially to keep on top of the progression of kidney disease. www.animalwellness.com.au

What can horses teach us? WORDS DAVINA O’BRIEN

T

imes are changing rapidly here on planet Earth. What once served us, may no longer work. For example, it is time to extend our definition of family to include the earth as well as her flora and fauna. There is so much wisdom to be learnt from nonhuman influences, if we are only willing to receive. We watch our equine family members live in harmony with each other. Don’t get me wrong, there are complaints and arguments, however they don’t keep living in that space. They argue, deal with it and then move on. We humans can learn a lot about ‘letting go’ and tolerance from our equine friends. Our horses are very tolerant of each other. If one of the herd needs to go off on their own, the others don’t argue with him or her. Friendships flow and change and it is all good. It was insights such as these that led to the evolution of ‘Walking Tall’. ‘The Walking Tall’ coaching sessions and workshops provide a space for transformational work. Our horses are the main coaches. Time and time again, I watch them gently guide people to expand themselves and their boundaries. One of the master teachers that we use is

a Welsh mountain pony called Monsieur Megalodon (aka Monsieur). He is a powerful and beautiful being. Since he is pony sized (though don’t say that in his presence) any women and children who attend the coaching sessions and workshops that have been afraid of horses, are comfortable in his presence. He brings with himself a sense of ease and space that he can impart to people who are willing to receive. Often people will open up around him, when they are a bit more reticent around our other horse family members. In the coaching sessions and workshops, we use more than one horse, so that people can experience the various personalities. The different horses will all impart different life lessons. In the coaching and workshop sessions, people can gain insights into their lives through interacting with the horses – grooming them and asking them to lead and dance with you. The horses can hold up a mirror to you and provide ‘aha’ moments. People have gained insights into their relationships with various family members simply from their interactions with the horses. In the workshop, we also spend

time reconnecting with the earth – she the home on which we live. Sometimes we live surrounded by concrete and bitumen. So we lose part of our connection to our home – the earth. In doing so, we lose part of ourselves. The horses are in constant contact with the earth as they walk around the paddocks. Being tolerant of each other and connecting back to the earth, are certainly concepts that we can learn from the horses and apply to our daily life. www.thepetenergytherapy.com
