People power the eco friendly way

Words MARIA FAALAFI

As humans we have been constantly evolving for thousands of years, it is crucial for the survival of the human race. But with our rapidly growing population, governments putting profits over environmental concerns, a high demand on cheaper ‘throw away’ products and an increase in consumerism, our chances of survival as a race are diminishing rapidly.

Many of us are aware of the urgent action we need to take and the immense changes we need to make to ensure the survival of not only the human race but all other species. We can also at times feel a sense of hopelessness and lack of power to be able to make a difference in the fight for climate change.

But there is no better time to create change than now, not tomorrow, not in ten years time, now is the time to evolve, adapt and revolutionise. It is time to use consumer power to show businesses and governments that we are serious about change. We can’t wait for the governments to save us, they actually don’t have the power to, WE do as consumers! The choices we make with every service or product we buy is what truly drives change, like the saying goes, “if we don’t buy it, they won’t make it”.

When we buy environmentally friendly products, we are not only rewarding businesses doing the right thing, but also punishing businesses not doing their bit to protect the environment; we are also giving these businesses no other choice than to adapt their products or services to meet consumer demand. We also need to let them know through our purchases that we demand more sustainable practices, packaging and materials.

Let’s choose green electricity providers that only resource their power from renewable sources such as solar, wind and biogas. Let’s say no to plastics that are harmful to the environment from the manufacturing process to the pollution they create once they are no longer needed. Let’s purchase furniture made from natural or sustainable materials, or better yet buy used furniture and restore it to keep it from going into landfill. Let’s buy food that has been sustainably grown without any chemicals that leach into our waterways and ruin the soil.

Let’s start demanding change from our actions, let’s create a revolution!

Because change is not scary, but a future without change is, and the evolution starts with you… today.
