How to evolve into greater confidence
Words SHEB GINER
Without a doubt, a lack of selfesteem can contribute to a multitude of mental health issues. When we consider ourselves to have no self-worth, self-regard, selfrespect and self-integrity, we may find ourselves to experience the following: • Sensitivity to criticism • Social withdrawal • Hostility • Excessive preoccupation with personal problems • Physical symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia and headaches

When our self-esteem is low, we tend to see ourselves and our life in a more negative and critical light. We also feel less able to take on the challenges that life throws at us.
Low self-esteem is a self-fulling prophecy
A healthy self-esteem will lead to positive feelings, not only about life in general but about ourselves. It makes us better able to deal with life’s ups and downs. When you begin to start noticing your self-worth, you will find it hard to settle for anything that doesn’t support your life journey and purpose.
5 Easy Steps to Boost Confidence
1. Spend one hour a day doing something that makes you feel good. It could be anything. Do something that you enjoy.
2. Exercise for 20-30 minutes per day, ideally outside. Exercise has a profound effect on our happiness and wellbeing and has been proven to be an effective strategy for overcoming depression.
3. Recognise and dump the negative chatterbox in your head. Mentally rehearse yourself dumping anything negative that you catch yourself thinking. You could imagine yourself burying it, burning it, throwing it out of the window. Find your own way of doing this. Then immediately replace that negative with a positive image, which might be an image of you happy, calm and relaxed. There is no limit to your imagination.
4. Have a worry window. Take one hour to allow yourself to feel bad or worry about the issue. But only utilise that time, and limit it to one hour.
5. Write good stuff. Grab yourself a journal or notebook and start to write down the good things that happen to you. It can be things you’ve enjoyed doing, nice things people have said to you or just five things that you are grateful for in your life right now.
