Cacao Taro Trufflettes RECIPE TABITHA LEE

D

id you know cooking and cooling your starches like sweet potatoes, taro and rice, has a different effect on your body than just eating it cooked straight away? Why not indulge and get the benefits of resistant starch to feed your gut microbiome. Resistant starch is feeding your bacteria in your large bowel when consumed. These bacteria use the starch as food, as it resists digestion in the small intestine. The by-product of this is butyrate which is amazing because this fatty acid helps heal your gut.

Ingredients: 1 cup steamed taro, cooled ¼ cup raw honey 1 tsp vanilla ½ tsp salt ½ cup full fat Ayam coconut cream ¼ cup cacao powder ½ cup coconut oil

Method: 1. Cook taro and cool for 12 hours in the fridge. 2. Place taro, honey, vanilla, sea salt, coconut cream, and cacao powder into a Vitamix blender or high powered blender and blend until smooth. It’s very important for it to be silky. 3. Add the coconut oil and further blend. 4. Pour into a glass bowl and set overnight until firm. 5. Roll into balls and roll in hemp seeds. 6. Place back into the fridge for a further 3 to 4 hours. Get creative and try adding wild orange Doterra or mint and flavour your trufflettes. Just remember essential oils can be strong – a little goes a long way. If you don’t have hemp seeds, just use desiccated coconut.

for 2020

f you’ve already tried (and failed) with your New Year’s resolutions for 2020, don’t be disheartened – it’s not too late to start these simple hacks to achieve your best gut health ever in 2020. 1. DRINK 500ml OF WATER AS SOON AS YOU WAKE After 8 hours sleep your cells are crying out for hydration. You require an adequate daily water intake for proper digestion, absorption of nutrients and elimination of waste. So the best way to get this process started each day is to begin with at least half a litre of quality drinking water. I actually aim for double this myself, with a squeeze of lemon or dash of apple cider vinegar in the first glass of water. Not only does this stimulate your metabolism, it helps promote detoxification by flushing your organs and glands from toxins it accumulated overnight.

2. CHEW AT LEAST 30 TIMES BEFORE SWALLOWING Digestion of food doesn’t just happen in your stomach, it actually starts in your mouth in two ways. Your teeth help break food down into smaller particles, and chewing releases more saliva packed with digestive enzymes to begin breaking food down into molecules. Chewing more thoroughly tells your body to produce more enzymes, in turn improving your digestion. 3. SCRAPE YOUR TONGUE Your mouth is like the gatekeeper of your digestive system. Everything that enters your mouth will end up in your gut, and we’re not just talking about food. Your mouth has its own bacterial flora, and has a large impact on your gut flora too. When you wake up tomorrow morning, go straight to the bathroom mirror and check out your tongue. It’s likely coated in a slimy white-ish substance of bacteria and dead cells. This debris will end up in your colon

as soon as you eat or drink, which can lead to digestive issues. The best habit to get into is using a tongue scraper to remove this icky coating each morning before it ends up in your gut! 4. REMOVE SUGAR FROM YOUR DIET If you’re serious about achieving better gut health this year, try lowering your sugar intake as much as possible. Sugar is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to damaging your gut health. Not only does it accelerate the growth of harmful bacteria and yeasts such as candida, the larger the number of bad bacteria, the less space is left for the good bacteria to populate. Given that sugar seems to be hiding everywhere these days, following a wholefoods diet is the best way to avoid it. I always say fruit is fantastic and not to be feared, but eating too much fruit can also spike your blood sugar levels, so it’s best to keep moderation in mind. www.sunshinecolonics.com.au

Is organic eating

worth the hype?

ave you made the switch yet to organic? Does it really have any impact? A 2013 study published on the National Center for Biotechnology Information noted that: “There is a huge body of evidence on the relation between exposure to pesticides and elevated rate of chronic diseases such as different types of: cancers, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson, Alzheimer’s, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), birth defects, and reproductive disorders.” Have you heard of the ‘Dirty Dozen’ and ‘Clean Fifteen’? This is a list produced each year by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) of the best fruits and vegetables to eat organically (the Dirty Dozen), and the ones that you can just buy conventionally grown (the Clean Fifteen) if you can’t afford to eat fully organic. The Dirty Dozen includes: strawberries, spinach, kale, nectarines, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery and potatoes. Please note that this list changes yearly.

Organic food is GMO-free. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) or Genetically Engineered (GE) foods are plants where the DNA has been manipulated in ways that cannot occur in nature, most commonly in order to be resistant to pesticides or produce an insecticide. GMOs are also commonly found in crops such as soybeans, corn and canola, and are present in much of the processed food that we eat. Here are some sustainable and selfsufficient options to introduce more organic foods into your daily routine. 1. Participate in community gardens. 2. Start your own backyard garden and educate yourself on the world of permaculture. 3. Shop at your local produce markets and support farmers and smaller business. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions by reducing thousands of food miles via sea, air and land. 4. Sourcing your meat, poultry and eggs that are free range and organically raised. Organically raised animals are not given antibiotics, growth hormones, or fed GMO feed and animal by-

products. This will assist in reducing your potential exposure and absorption of added hormones that can often be found in everyday retail sources of proteins. Why should we embrace seasonal eating? Organic Hemp Seed Milk RECIPE MR HEMPY

NATURAL, CHOCOLATE, VANILLA OR BERRY Ingredients: ½ cup of organic hemp seeds – drop by the Hempothecary at Montville for all your hemp seed needs! 3-4 cups of pure spring water (use less water for a thicker, creamier milk!) 1 pinch of Celtic sea salt – found in all good health food stores 1 whole organic date, pitted (optional for sweetness) or 1 tablespoon of organic maple syrup – found in all good health food stores ½ tsp of organic vanilla extract (optional)

2 tbsp of organic cocoa or cacao powder for ‘chocolate milk’ (optional) ¼ cup of organic fresh berries for ‘berry milk’ (optional) – most seasonal berries found at your local organic green grocer Method: Add hemp seeds, water, salt, and any additional add-ins (optional) to a high-speed blender. Blend for about 1 minute or until the mixture is well combined. Try a small sample with a spoon to test for desired flavour and sweetness. Add more dates, maple syrup, salt,

vanilla, chocolate or berries as needed. Pour the mixture directly into a serving container. You can strain if you prefer a milky texture, or leave ‘as is’ for a smoothie feel. If straining, pour over a large mixing bowl or pitcher covered with a hemp nut milk bag or very thin tea towel. Transfer to a sealed container and refrigerate. Your delicious hemp milk will keep in the refrigerator up to 5 days (sometimes more). One of the biggest mistakes you can make with your health according to Ayurveda WORDS SERENA PARRY

I

f you have developed an interest in wellness as part of your efforts to lead a healthier life, the term Ayurveda has probably entered your vocabulary. The basics are known to anyone who’s tried fixes for their bodies and minds, like mindfulness and yoga to oil pulling and tongue scraping – Ayurveda is a 5000-year-old traditional medicine originating from the Indian subcontinent, which has inspired some of the most popular wellness trends. Before you can finish saying the words “wellness trend” everyone is crazy about almond milk, circadian rhythms, intermittent fasting, energy balls, and adding turmeric to everything while talking about how these practices change their lives and that’s great. Did you know though, that all of these seemingly new wellness trends can ALL be traced back to the ancient Ayurvedic health system? And this brings us to the biggest mistake you can make when practising Ayurveda or if you are thinking about incorporating it into your lifestyle.

Being a true Ayurveda practitioner is more than jumping on any new wellness craze. What about Ayurveda being a sister philosophy to yoga and understanding the cycles of nature and the power of elements? What some practitioners do incorrectly, is take it too far with every ‘new’ remedy they hear about. It’s called extremism. They forget balance is the solution for living well. The dose makes the medicine or the poison. Did you know that an innocent fruit like an apple contains amygdalin in its seeds, and that pears contain very small amounts of formaldehyde? These are natural chemicals which are toxic for humans, but are found in fruit in very small quantities, far below the harmful dose. It’s the same way with Ayurveda and any modern or traditional health practice – overdoing it becomes harmful. So it’s time to take a break. Listen to your body and find out what you really need.

Don’t crawl out of bed to go to a HIIT class if you are not in the mood. Practise gentle yoga instead. A simple series of sun salutations still works every single muscle in the body. Don’t push bone broth down your throat if it makes you nauseous. Sleep, rest, and eat before anything. Learn how to be and only then focus on doing. Less is more, and not only in art and design. Doing less is an attitude you should instill in more aspects of your life, starting with the adoption of wellness trends. Sometimes doing more is a false economy; because you are busy, you feel like you are being more productive. Sometimes the BEST thing you can do, is actually to stop and reflect and take a moment and you will find you will gain way more than that time back later in increased energy, increased productivity, better sleep, improved mood, etc. www.serenaparry.com

2020: Changing the paradigm with Transformative Technologies WORDS TROY HAINES

I

’m unsure about you, but I felt a pain on Christmas morning for Mother Earth. It’s at this time of year, the resources that are taken and manufactured into ‘stuff’ and returned to the Earth as junk, is almost unimaginable and unquantifiable. In this organic living issue it seems timely to talk about what it would take to change the paradigms which are no longer serving us. If we take a high level look at our existing paradigms, for the most part we live as if: • we are born into a physical world as a separate being, but with parents who care for us • we are educated as part of an education system (which is largely outdated) • when we finish our schooling we seek employment (for jobs which may not exist) • we find a mate and marry (and later divorce) • we have children • we work a lifetime consuming and collecting stuff (with momentary glimpses of fulfilment and meaning)

• we retire and when the time comes, we die (confused about what it was all about and possibly what happens after death, depending on our beliefs) This paradigm is fundamentally broken, our world is evolving, but our paradigms aren’t. We’re disconnected, opposed, sick mentally, physically and it’s destroying our Earth. Not only is it broken, but it’s not real… If we look a little deeper, Yuval Noah Harari says one of the keys that enabled Homo sapiens to emerge as the dominant life form on the planet, was our ability to collectively agree on that which is not real. Harari highlights the distinction between the objective layer of reality and the subjective layer. If we look at our world, we see a physical (objective layer), our environment, trees, minerals, oceans, animals, etc… However, what Homo sapiens have been able to do is create a subjective layer (paradigms) that overlay the objective reality which influences the objective layer. The subjective layer or paradigms are things like: ownership of land, borders for countries, marriage, value of money,

success, the power of governments and companies, religions, race, classes, laws, rituals (like Christmas). To a large extent these are just stories, stories that we can change! I feel it’s time to look at changing our existing paradigms, and see what role technology can play. Because technology is a force that takes what is scarce and makes it abundant. Transformative Technologies is taking the technologies which are currently taxing our cognition, wellbeing, relationships and driving destructive behaviour and pointing them in a direction that assesses, enhances, and connects us to higher states of consciousness. Do you do business

like a man or a woman?

here are two distinct styles of doing business: a man’s way and a woman’s way. A man’s way is direct. He wants to get straight to the point and give or receive information and then make a choice. A woman’s way is to talk about things at greater length. She wants to discuss how things could work and what her feelings are about the project. She will ask, “What do you think about this?” and she loves to be asked this question herself. How do you like to do business? Do you prefer a man’s way, or a woman’s way? Observe the people you work with. Do they do business like a man, or like a woman? This isn’t a judgment. It’s not a wrongness or a rightness. It’s just for your awareness, so you can create and generate in your business with greater ease. Are you a woman in business? Have you thought you had to do business

by being a tough businesswoman? Sometimes women think they need to become tough, disconnected and mean in order to be successful in business. Nothing could be further from the truth! Are you a man in business? Many men in business have been taught that they have to be the commander-inchief; that they have to give and follow orders. These leaders tend to make arbitrary decisions and they expect people to do what they’re told. True entrepreneurs, people who can truly get things done, have more questions in their universe. Their approach is, “What does this person know and what can they contribute?” Understanding a man’s and a woman’s way of doing business is a great tool and gives you more information so you make clearer choices. It also allows you to see what’s

required when you’re doing business with people. But don’t let this point of view become a limitation. Really, you’re not a man or a woman in business: you’re an infinite being – limitless and unlimited. You should not allow your sex to limit your choices in business or your life. hristmas is now behind us and hopefully you had an amazing time spent with family and friends. Here we are, not only a New Year, but a new decade as well. Close you eyes for a moment and consider what dreams you have for the next 10 years. Think of the places you wish to travel to, repay (or reduce) the mortgage, purchase your dream home, fund children’s education, reduce your working hours or retire. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if it could all magically happen? In reality – you may be nursing an overextended credit card debt after too much extravagance over Christmas. You may feel like you are living from payday to payday, just getting by, literally just surviving. Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could start thriving and enjoying life? Let’s not let another 10 years disappear with regret and thoughts of the things we should have done to make a difference in our lives. Sometimes, it just takes a little bit of guidance and direction to get on

track. So many of my clients say they wish they had seen a trusted financial planner years ago, however, they kept procrastinating. I like to take a very pragmatic approach when working with clients. We sit down and do a summary of where you are now (warts and all) as the initial starting point. Then I encourage my clients to physically sit down and write their wish list for life, including short, medium, and long-term goals. The, “one day I’d like to…” is a fantastic place to start. Something happens when we take the things that rattle around in our heads and physically write them down. I encourage couples to write separate lists and it has been amazing what many have found out about their partner. They thought they knew everything about their other half, yet often find out things that have been pushed (sometimes squashed) to the back of their minds and hearts. It’s like they have permission to dream again. We then work out the numbers of what we need to do to help achieve their goals and dreams.

My industry is full of compliance and challenging rules and regulations. However, the most rewarding thing is when I receive a postcard from a client who has just visited somewhere in the world, and they have made one of their dreams a reality. Recently, I received a card from Iceland, where clients were able to witness nature’s blessing of the Northern Lights. On the back of their card, they wrote, “Sometimes dreams do come true”. It filled my heart with joy. My challenge to you at the start of this decade is to consider what you can do today, to make a difference to all your tomorrows. Adapting to new technology and embracing the power of global

A

couple of years ago, I began to put all my energy into converting my business model into one that had the capacity to reach people all over the world. The way to have global impact is to embrace new technology. The best thing is; we are in the digital age, the internet is king, making the whole world available through devices we all have these days, like: computers, iPhones, smartphones, tablets and iPads. These devices coupled with modern media sources like: streaming television, social media, podcasts, blogs, vlogs, Netflix, YouTube, Zoom, and Skype, mean that our services, message, connections, and creations can be presented online to literally anyone who has a device and the internet. This time last year, it occurred to me that to reach many people, I needed to create an inspirational personal development platform that everyone

could access, independent of their financial circumstances or where they lived in the world. 2019 was one of financial hardship. At the peak, I went to stay with my parents, it was my only option. While I feel blessed to have a supportive family and to have spent quality time with them, it was shrouded in humiliation. I mean, I am 48! Many of the projects and visions I worked towards over the last two decades either took longer to transpire or some did not eventuate. The tipping point is driven by universal timing, so I trust that. I invested money along with extreme amounts of time and energy with heartfelt expectation that my creations would truly inspire and invoke healing and awareness across humanity. ix years ago, I started a company called ‘Nature’s Happiness’ to provide children aged 12 months and up with a plant-based, vegan alternative to toddler formula or kids’ protein shakes. At the time, we, as a community, had not fully embraced the concept of living and eating differently to sustain and protect our planet as well as our health. More recently, we have seen the importance and relevance of plantbased living. It’s because of this, along with the stories from parents whose babies had allergies, that I was inspired to create a plant-based infant formula.

WHAT IS PLANT-BASED EATING? It’s a diet consisting mostly of plantbased food and no animal products,

you are not necessarily vegetarian or vegan but live by the principle of eating ‘whole and plant-based food’ as your main source of nutrition. One of the most popular quotes and one to live by is from Hippocrates, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” LET’S LOOK INTO THE SCIENCE Scientific research was highlighted in the book ‘The China Study’ showing that a plant-based diet can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, certain types of cancer, and other major illnesses. Many other studies have shown animal protein increases the growth of cancer, including cow’s milk protein (caseins). When moving to a plant-based diet,

we then have to consider genetically modified crops and pesticides. Which is why it is important to eat organic where possible and avoid GMO food. A lot of people have concerns over not getting the right proteins and nutrition from plant-based eating alone, so it is important to get a variety of whole food within the diet and to consider speaking to a nutritionist like myself before making the switch. A

new woman called in as an art session was coming to an end. She wanted to meet us all before deciding to join future classes. She suddenly started to talk about spiritual things and had many questions such as, “What does HU mean?” Pointing to one of my pens on the table which had HU printed on it, I told her it is a universal love song to God and I proceeded to demonstrate how to sing it and everyone loved it. Taking out my mobile phone I showed everyone the free app HU Experience the God Sound and played a short video clip. I went on to explain how anyone can use it for upliftment and in times of need. HU is the sound of Soul; there is no need to direct it! By singing HU every day it will attune you to the wonders of God’s unconditional love for Soul: you! I also gave her a HU card. Holding my hand in hers, she looked deeply into my eyes and said, “You have no

idea what you have done here today.” I walked down the driveway and turning back to the watching group, I said, “You never know what you’re going to get…” Everyone concluded in unison “…life’s a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get!” I went home still laughing at this quote the whole class was familiar with. The following week the class organiser rang me to say that the class was cancelled. Our new guest’s husband had left this world the night before. He had been unwell for some time, and she was looking forward to a new life now. The following week, when I arrived for the class, the organiser greeted me, serious and quite pale. She softly told me she had more news: the woman, whose husband had just died, had passed away herself after a sudden brain haemorrhage. The organiser had had a dream in which this woman told her she was happy and at peace now.

first met the delightful Anne Clark around 15 years ago by chance at a local market at Noosa Marina. She had just relocated with her husband

Coast, speaking events, raw food and essential oil workshops, and a plethora of books including the renowned, ‘The Poo in You’ and ‘The Raw Food Cookbook’. A raw food and gut health pioneer, Anne was sharing her wisdom on these subjects long before they were popular

trends and recognised links to health and wellbeing. A prolific storyteller, Anne shares her insights with wisdom, humour and simplicity. Anne was just 13 years old when her brother brought home his date who was a vegetarian. This became a catalyst for her early experimentation with food. Anne recalls, “I was watching my poor mum going into an absolute flap about what to feed us, so I suggested a really lovely salad. I said, ‘Come on, Mum, I’ll help you make it.’ As we’re making the salad, I’m looking at the burnt lamb chops… I don’t want to insult my mum’s memory but there’s this burnt, horrible meal that she’s about to feed us, and there’s this beautiful fresh salad for my brother’s vegetarian date. It was like the light bulb had gone on and I suddenly thought, ‘am I really going to continue to eat in this manner or am I going to do what Kathy’s doing?’ It was a little wakeup call. I decided to start saving for my first house at the age of 13 so that I could move out and have my own kitchen!” Anne’s vocation as a health educator began in the eighties. She penned her first publication to assist customers at the health food shop where she worked part-time. Anne recollects, “I noticed a lot of people were coming in with no idea how to use some of the ingredients, like the dried chickpeas, the lentils, the gluten-free flours and other items on our shelves.” After suggesting it to her boss, Anne would experiment with ingredients at home, then come back to work with a recipe they would print out and put on the front counter. “I created a recipe book called, ‘Good Health Recipes from Breakfast to Tea’. I submitted it as my assignment for my nutrition course and I got an A+! In 1986 I published it. I remember taking the books over in brown paper bags to the post office across the road as I was getting orders for it. I went all around Melbourne and I sold this little book. I noticed that there was nothing available written in Australia that gave functional practical recipes for some of the ingredients that were being sold in the health food stores. That was my first go at being an educator. It was just a natural progression for me to make it less about cooked.” By 1993 Anne had published ‘The Raw Food Cookbook’, the first of its kind in Australia, and travelled across the country with her husband Darryl selling it to health food shops who snapped it up

because it was so unique. Anne has now published more than 20 books! Anne is adamant that healthy eating is more than just the ingredients we use; it’s also other factors such as our environment, stress levels and mindset. Her favourite saying is, “I believe the worst food eaten in a state of joy, happiness and relaxation can sometimes be better than the best food eaten in a state of anxiety and nervousness.” This was not something she recognised 20 years ago, but has been part of her evolution as a lifestyle educator. “I’ve come full circle with it all. Nutrition is about being comfortable and relaxed with what you’re eating, the environment that you’re eating in, and who you’re eating with.” Annie believes sitting down to a meal with a glass of wine and feeling happy and calm and comfortable, can actually be better than someone who is eating a wine-free meal uptight. Anne overviews the nature of her work, “As a Lifestyle Health Consultant, I look at the lifestyle of my clients. They come to me because they want to have a change in their life and diet. They see me as somebody who can help facilitate that change without making them feel bad about where they’ve got themselves to. That’s a big key. I’ve had clients come to me that were in trauma because of the last practitioner that they saw. Not only did they see somebody that drained their bank account very quickly, they didn’t get a result.” Anne loves to be a catalyst for people to experience better health in a way that is meaningful for them. “I can help them with things like: what to make for breakfast or what the best movement might be for their temperament. Some people can’t handle yoga classes. Some people are good if you just give them a mountain to climb, or tell them to go play tennis, or put on their favourite dancing record or music and dance. That’s their movement. That’s much better for them.”

Anne takes a very holistic approach to guiding people on a healthy and fulfilling path. “Where I’m going now and in the future is more about helping people with their mental health, and perceiving their purpose and their role on this Earth.” Anne emphasises that we need to reckon with ourselves and take the necessary time out to focus purely on rest and restoration. “That needs to be as important as paying your rates or maintaining your property or going to work, because what are you going to work for? I’ve hung around a lot of people who have passed away. No one lies on their death bed and says, ‘Jeez, I wish I had worked harder. I wish I had done more.’ The last things they talk about is the people they love. They talk about that and their experiences. My retreats wake people up to that as well. We really emphasise that in the content of what we’re teaching. We look at seven major elements. We look at how they’re breathing, what their definition of hydration is, how they’re nourishing their bodies with the food they’ve decided to eat, how they’re moving their bodies… we look at their mindset and what’s bugging them. They say stress is not so much what happens, but how you deal with it; your perception. You and I are on a roller coaster. If we’re really happy about being on the roller coaster, we’re creating endorphins, interleukins and interferon. If we’re not too keen about the roller coaster, we’re creating adrenaline,” she says. As Anne heads into her 60th year she will be offering more retreats as well as collaborating and speaking at the events of others. “I’m feeling good about my purpose on this planet. An

alternative view of organic living

T

his month’s theme, ‘Organic Living’ is right down my alley; it’s the theme for a life lived with ease and self-responsibility. I’m going to present what may be a different perspective of organic living. I’m going to begin where everything begins, with myself or yourself. The word organic can be applied to many situations, from farming, to business growth, computing systems, military, economics and business, law, music, chemistry, philosophy and not least, living organisms. I understand the word organic to mean something along the lines of allowing the natural systemic development of a thing without interference. For anyone out there who reads my articles regularly, you may by now get a sense of the underlying message I promote, which is that we stand in the centre of our personal universe, creating responses to situations that reflect our own personal relationship. The

process of developing and improving this relationship is prime; shifting one’s focus to how one performs daily tasks and how free or restrictive these movements are to the organism as a whole. Our body as a free-standing biped has evolved over a vast period of time and situations, so it follows that when the body’s skeleton is aligned from the feet up, it functions optimally. The organs, blood and lymph vessels, nerve flow, fascia, muscles are at ease and allowed to function without interference. As soon as the body comes out of alignment, the nervous system reacts instantly to correct or adjust the systems to remain upright and live. This is okay for an emergency until the body is able to heal and return to its natural form, but unsustainable as a permanent fixture. So here it is… awareness is the key to living a truly organic lifestyle. The process of sensing how one moves

in everyday tasks is the process of refinement of self. For instance, is the simple act of lifting the arms and turning the neck free-flowing or is the thoracic spine and shoulder girdle unable to support this movement? Where do you feel movement? Does the curve in your lower back deepen and hurt when you move your neck and arms? Making a commitment to the refinement of self through body awareness, has organically moved me in the direction of compassion. As my mind has gradually softened its concepts, dos, don’ts, shouldn’t, can’t, wrong, right, my choices have become more compassionate. I find life exciting and challenging at times living in this state of awareness. My greatest satisfaction and joy is to know the refinement of this work of art I call my life, never ends. Q: M writes, ‘My husband and I have been separated 2 years. We see each other for our child’s handover days. There is no communication from him, which triggers me. I wanted him to leave me alone but now that he is, why does it still hurt?’ A: It’s important that you allow yourself all the time that you need to heal and don’t be in a hurry to get to the end of it. You are triggered because you are still craving the love, care and attention that you feel you did not receive during your marriage. You have within you an emotional wound or belief that you are not loveable. The healing will come when you learn to love yourself as deeply as you needed to be loved by your ex and others in your past. What would you have liked to receive from your ex that would have made you feel loved? Attention, acceptance, compliments?… start with giving those things to yourself. Pay attention to your needs, accept yourself for who you are without judgment, compliment yourself for your accomplishments each day. Q: Deborah says, ‘My partner is being so negative and he just doesn’t get why being positive and focusing on what we want to create

in our life is important. How can I make him change?’ A: You can’t make him change and you shouldn’t be wasting your precious energy trying to. There is only one person you can change and that is yourself. It’s time to take full responsibility for yourself and the experiences you are having. If you are experiencing something from another (outside of yourself) then you are a vibrational match to it in some way and your job is to go within and clean that up. Ask yourself “where in my life am I being negative and/or sceptical?”. Your only purpose as a conscious being is to: • raise your vibrational frequency • mind your own vibration • take your high vibe frequency into every experience, situation and room you enter and through your high vibe, request/command energetically that all the energy (people, etc) around you rise to meet you. A

round 300,000 years ago, humans started using fire on a daily basis. Fire allowed humans to eat foods they were previously unable to digest in their natural form. Fire changes food’s biochemistry, making it easy to chew and digest when cooked. The process of cooking enabled humans to increase the variety of foods they could eat. Some scientists believe there is a link between cooking, the shortening of the intestinal tract and growth of the human brain. The debate over cooked versus raw food is interesting. Cooking can affect the nutrient content of foods, sometimes increasing the absorption of

many nutrients, but at the same time it reduces water soluble vitamins (vitamin C and B vitamins), fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) and minerals (mainly potassium, magnesium, sodium and calcium). As a doctor with an interest in nutrition and as part of the treatment with my patients, I have seen the benefits of both cooked and raw foods. Going on a raw, plant-based diet for a period of time can serve as a wonderful cleanse of the body. Dr Natasha Campbell McBride, who I’ve had the privilege of training with, says going on a vegan diet is like a type of fasting, which can have very powerful health effects for lots of people. However, you

should bear in mind that some people’s digestive tracts are not ready for this, as there may be damage from years of consuming processed and toxic foods. Nowadays we see extremes of diets – from raw vegan to carnivore diets – and I have seen nutritional deficiencies at both ends of the spectrum. I don’t believe one diet fits all. It is very important to listen to your body and how it feels with certain foods, whether raw or cooked. I believe a combination of both to be the best. New Earth Breathwork: WORDS BEN PARSONS

T

hree years ago I discovered breathwork and my personal reality changed in ways I couldn’t believe! Laying down for my first session, I started to breathe following the guidance of the breath worker. I started to tingle as oxygen and energy flooded my body, soon after my arms and legs tensed up for intervals that seemed to slowly build and release. It was more than just a physical sensation as different emotions came and passed. After each release, I experienced deep levels of peace, calm and sometimes bliss! Fast forwarding, 10 sessions had passed, I had processed so much childhood trauma that once inhibited me from fully expressing myself. One of the biggest shifts I experienced was in my 4th session as a memory surfaced. I was sitting with the whole school in assembly and the principal caught me talking to a friend while he was speaking, he pointed and asked me to stand up and share what was more important than his speech.

Life after breath…

I remember standing and seeing everyone look at me as he continued to pressure me to share, the fear was unbearable, my breath stopped and my throat started to close as he told me to sit back down. The fear was so real as this surfaced in my session, then stillness and calm washed over me, confirming it had released. In the coming days and weeks after this session, I facilitated some events and noticed I wasn’t terrified or choking on my words when facilitating and even found myself comfortable speaking in front of 400+ people later that year. I even went on to get singing lessons and now perform live! Shifting these limiting beliefs has allowed me to freely express, create, evolve and support others in this process over the last two years as a qualified breathwork facilitator. A way to

not lose your joy

T

aking a holiday filled with stress is hard to enjoy, and often results in sickness as well as overindulging. A health retreat at a magical location that is fully organised is a far better way to enjoy a break that has transformational health and wellbeing benefits. When I take students on retreat they have nothing else to think about. It’s a chance to be able to make the experience about themselves, rather than kids or family. They can step out of their comfort zone into an adventure, explore a different culture and have fun! As they let go of their busy minds, they can start to feel and be in the moment with more joy, kindness, laughter and non-judgment. By nurturing their bodies with clean, fresh, and plentiful nutritious foods that heal the mind and body, they can come away feeling energised, revitalised and way more organised.

Working in hair salons across the world, I realised how stressed and unhappy people get; when the joy disappears from the simplest pleasures that are all around us for free. I have experienced overload myself through way too much work and pressure, losing my joy, and finding it again when I have taken the time out to retreat, through visits to an ashram, living very simply with all walks of life, and attending daily yoga and meditations. It’s a chance to reflect and restore. After establishing three yoga and massage studios on the Sunshine Coast, and running annual retreats, I realised how beneficial and powerful retreats truly are; watching students’ day-in dayout, rushing in and out of classes, barely in the moment, stressed and time-poor. Yes, even when you live in paradise locations, life gets busy. I know how it feels to be at a

crossroads. After meeting my partner at a yoga conference in the Whitsundays, commuting to and fro, exploring some of the islands and having the opportunity to teach yoga and mindfulness there, I realised it would be an awesome location to hold retreats. It was time to follow my heart, to sell Aloha Active Noosa, and relocate. I have travelled and worked all over the world, and spent over 20 years teaching, attending yoga, Pilates, and massage trainings in various styles, and enhancing my own health and wellbeing. I love to share this passion for health and wellbeing with others. Retreats really do have it all. I

have been reflecting on 2019 and it’s got me thinking about 2020 and what that is really going to mean for me, and I know I’m going to fail when I say this, but I’m going to have a go. I am going to try to be better at selfcare and self-love. I am five-star-fabulous, the dux of the class, at looking after everyone else including: my garden, my dogs, my kids, my company, everything else except for myself. So, I am really going to focus on Sonya for the year ahead, even writing this is hard! For once I am going to forget about the extra kilos I want to get rid of. I am going to forget about the superficial stuff. I have actually booked my first stretch class, I hate yoga, it’s not for me, I am sorry there’s something for everybody but I am not a yoga queen (but go you if you love doing yoga). What I want to do is cut back, I am 53 and I’m noticing things like my

stomach is starting to have issues and all that other stuff we notice as we get older, so I want to cut back to the basics of organic stuff. I think we all overthink organics, I’m just going to cut back to: fruit, vegetables, seeds, legumes and a really simple organic life. Moving my body gently is the aim. I love to run, and if I want to go for a run, I go for a slow run listening to podcasts. Podcasts are my new thing. Listening to inspirational people, feeding my spirit and my soul as well as feeding my body through simple fruits, vegetables and legumes. Basic stuff. So realistically, it comes down to 3 things or areas: 1. Simple organic food (back to plant-based basics) 2. Gentle exercise (when you feel like it for fun, not as punishment) 3. Feed your mind and spirit with inspiration That’s where I am headed in 2020.

Well, at least I am going to give it a good crack and if I fail, I’ll forgive myself and move on. You only live once, and there’s always 2021. My constant companion in the battle of life is stress, like most people, but especially a mum with an extremely busy business, a caretaker. I just think we really do put ourselves, sometimes, not even on the list. I am going to be organically me in 2020. It’s the year where I don’t hold my breath as much. Where I be gentler to myself and I don’t beat myself up so much mentally. Self-talk and encouragement (that I give to others so freely), I will start to do inwardly for myself and I will organically let Sonya grow. So, bring it on 2020! How can your

crystals help you go natural?

I

n this modern world, we seem to lose track of the simple things and many favour a more material and ‘quickly processed’ approach to life and living day to day. Remember when you were a kid? You most likely walked barefoot most of the time, played with rocks/crystals without knowing they had healing vibes, you thought they were just pretty. We loved making mud pies using dirt with water and climbed beautiful green trees. Why don’t we still do this as an adult? I do go barefoot whenever possible and love trees, but these days I hug them as I wouldn’t be game to climb them and fall! These simple things are nature at its best and we benefit so much when we are in it. Living healthy doesn’t mean everything we consume has to be organic, I couldn’t do that for a second, as I love sweet treats, they make me

happy. So an easy way to add some balance is drink lots of filtered water and perhaps think about adding a crystal to it for a totally organic twist. This age-old remedy has been used for centuries. I don’t buy into expensive crystal water bottles, they are a fad and expensive! How about you just enjoy fresh water with a small tumble stone submerged using quartz which are non-toxic. Stones like: amethyst, citrine, smoky, clear and rose quartz are all wonderful. Just use them one at a time and don’t overdo it. It is possible to consume too much crystal energy and it can make you feel quite peculiar, trust me I did it when learning years ago! Also make sure your stones are pure, have no cracks and are genuine (all of ours are). Think simply and don’t over complicate this new year, the key to a healthy proactive lifestyle is taking baby

steps and adjusting to new habits to replace things that may have stressed us or made us unhealthy. How about your clothes? I

t had been an emotional day. The Cooroibah Tewantin bushfires were in full swing and many friends and loved ones were being evacuated. The Maleny Community Centre was cool in contrast, and as people arrived we found our space, and mingled a little, before switching off our phones, settling down on our mats, with pillows and coverings for comfort as we began our hour-long gong journey. A wall of gongs was at the front of the space, silently inviting us to be present in their majestic power. In anticipation, we waited as Leith set the scene of what to expect and ensured it was a safe space for those present. The deep resonance of the gong was like nothing I had experienced before. I could feel my body relax, my breath deepen and my mind quieten as I was immersed in the vibrational field of sound. I found it easy to empty my mind as I was engulfed in sounds that stirred the depths of my soul… a sound so deep, I sensed it was reminiscent of the dawn of creation.

I cracked open my eyelids to see Leith in full swing… in his zone of effortless genius… giving himself fully to the process of creating an experience for those present. I could see why he was so passionate about sound healing, and indeed the gong, and understood why he is sharing this gift with fellow practitioners who want to learn the practice. It was wonderful to experience the gong in a community setting, but its application is far reaching, from ceremony, social settings and special events, and to support other health modalities. n a world where we are often stressed and feel pressed to our limits, I often hear clients say that they just don’t know how to feel happy. Have we forgotten how to be happy? So here are five keys to unlock your blocks around being happy: 1. Take back your power – we often think we need something to happen, or someone to be, or do something to make us happy. The truth is, nothing outside of us can make us truly happy; as soon as we believe that something outside of us is needed to make us happy, we give away our power. 2. Don’t look for quick fixes – we often turn to things like: shopping, food, gambling or substances in the hope that they will fulfill us. However, these are only short-term fixes, filled with the illusion of happiness, and often

contribute to longer term unhappiness. You can decide to feel happy in any moment, but it comes from within you, not externally. 3. It’s okay to be happy when others around you are not – often we hold ourselves hostage to suffering because those around us are not happy. Have you ever noticed that you hold back your shine – your light, your happiness, your good vibes, because those around you are not happy? You fear upsetting them; hurting them or offending them. Some people are not just holding back in that moment, but in their life. Are you unhappy so that you can belong in a family or relationship that is unhappy? Check in and see if you are putting a lid on your light out of fear of being rejected by those around you. 4. Appreciate the lows – we can’t

have a life of learning and expansion if there are no opportunities to experience the array of emotions that are on offer here. Your life is filled with colourful experiences to help you grow. Learn to look at and approach challenging times as an old friend who has come to show you where it is time to grow and what it is time to let go of. Developing an appreciation of the lows in life, and what they can bring you, will help you move through these times easier. 5. Have an attitude of gratitude – gratitude is a powerful antidote for feeling less than happy. I

t’s never another human that disappoints us, it’s our own projections and expectations that do this. But many times, rather than taking responsibility, we blame others, believing that if they were somehow different, we would not be suffering. The holiday period is a challenge for most people, old patterns of not being fully responsible for the way we relate to others and the projections we have, wreak havoc in our personal lives. Yet the unconscious nature of our behaviours didn’t start with us. Their roots are firmly entrenched in the lives and actions of our ancestors, and the unspoken secrets, lies and traumatic events that remain hidden yet active in our own bodies and family systems. Every human being is projecting and receiving energy on a constant basis. Like different radio stations, we can choose to resonate and upgrade our frequency to higher realms. But old traumas and patterns lurk in the

background, unconsciously influencing the choices we can make. Choosing to grow up and take full responsibility for our emotions by not dumping unnecessary projections onto others, is one of the most courageous undertakings a human can strive for. Developing a practice of being present to our inner landscape, is the way through the cycle of suffering that can seem unending. Being dedicated to show up in a different way than our ancestors could, will create a deeper sense of happiness and peace. As humans, we both experience the invitation to control our environments and seek happiness in external projects or future outcomes on a daily basis. Yet as we embrace this New Year, we are reminding ourselves that the happiness we seek is always experienced in the present moment. It’s found in the small everyday things. 2020 is a year to be aware of our

inner landscapes, while practising patience, generosity, mindfulness and reflection. A year to move towards seeing the unconscious patterns, guilt and shame that live in our bodies from our past actions and the choices of our ancestors. The

couple bubble

T

here’s something I’ve observed over my decades of life that is having me fascinated lately. The couples I know that have had lasting and secure love over many years, have all had something in common. These couples would always be attentive to each other, always sit together or be in close contact at gatherings, always be cueing each other, watching out for each other. I used to wonder if they were a little ‘co-dependant’, relied on each other too much, perhaps even a bit controlling. I remember one couple vowing that they would never talk about the other or their relationship in a negative way, that any disturbances would be dealt with within the relationship (or with assisted professional help). I always loved being around these couples, because there was no drama. You could feel their bubble – you were on the outside, but they were always so gracious in including others in their banter and conversation.

Well, this, according to the latest relationship neuroscience, is actually ‘a thing’. These couples are neurologically pairing their brains for safety and security. And creating a ‘couple bubble’, a protective space around themselves, each other and the relationship, a space where they can share and trust the other to listen to their vulnerabilities, insecurities, concerns or just enjoy daily general sharing of conversations. This term has been coined by Stan Tatkin, author of ‘Wired for Love’. Whether conscious or not, these couples have an agreement, of tethering to each other, staying in contact, in a way, that helps each other feel more secure and safe. This way, they can tackle their lives with more resilience and more bravery, more confidence knowing that each other has their backs. No matter what childhood background they had, the relationship would provide, and sometimes heal, an insecure childhood or upbringing. This is called secure functioning. On

the other hand, insecure functioning sets up a biological threat response in each other, where couples begin to anticipate all things the other will do will hurt. Generally, these couples are not so skilled at repairing hurt so they accrue a sense of injustice and unfairness because there are no resources for the relationship – it feels too dangerous. A good place to start, is to decide to agree on creating your relationship as the first go-to place, the place where you can rest with each other and support each other, repair quickly if hurts arise, as they will, and reassure each other along the way. This has a profound effect on the nervous system and creates a solid foundation for each other’s lives and families. Review: Beks Thompson

Is it possible to be

brilliant without burnout?

I

’ve crossed paths with Beks Thompson a few times now. She is warm, her smile infectious, and she has a way of acknowledging the presence of others gently with little fanfare. I recently attended Beks’ ‘Art of Brilliance without Burnout’ half-day event, and would love to share a little of my experience with you. Although the women who were present had stories that were uniquely their own, there were some common themes; seeking a new direction, re-discovering oneself, reinventing, overcoming, to name a few. For me, having experienced burnout several times in the past, I was interested to learn how I could avoid it in the future, what it would take to do so, and whether it was possible to truly shine and be seen without the need to strive to ‘do all the things’, and find a more effortless way to do this. Beks did not disappoint. My intention

was to be ‘curious’ and I found myself surrendering to the gentle and noninvasive processes that Beks took us through. As an introduction to her extended offerings, we were able to personally experience our energetic profile, to witness the before-andafter transformation first-hand, and to recognise what is truly possible when we become self-aware, then use this knowledge to transcend how we experience challenges that may lead to burnout. New technology Q. What is your background in the health industry? A: My wife Deb was very ill back in the 80s. We went to many doctors and specialists and could not resolve what would today be described and CFS. Out of frustration, we went to many alternative practitioners and she made great progress. We started studying kinesiology and other energy-related modalities for personal interest and it just grew from there. A

cross the country this summer we have suffered drought, record high temperatures and devastating bushfire events and our animals, both domestic and native, have also suffered. An estimated one billion animals have died as a result of the bushfires across the country. The number of pets treated with heat stroke have increased, and there have even been news reports of backyard deaths likely from heat stroke in dogs tied up without access to shade or water. With Australia now listed as the hottest country in the world, do we really love a sunburnt country? What can we do to protect our animals from these extreme heat events? A family friend’s home burnt down in a recent bushfire, and now the necessity of having an evacuation plan has become more personal. Their advice was to be sure you have a list of items you want to grab in case of urgent evacuation. Have all important documents and necessities packed and ready to go. Leave early, and know where you can evacuate to. And also,

practise evacuating, especially with your animals, so that the process is less stressful if the need arises. For your pets, be sure to pack their food, drinking water, bowls, any medicines, bedding, their leash, and restraint for transport. Cats will also need a litter tray. Livestock should be left in a cleared paddock with access to a dam if possible that they can shelter in, and be sure to remove all rugs. When it comes to heat stress, prevention is better than cure – the mortality rate from heat stress is 50%! Know what symptoms to watch for, which in the beginning can include heavy panting, loss of interest in food or water, and drooling. This may progress quickly to wobbliness, collapse, seizures, blindness and bleeding. If your pet is showing signs of heat stress, mist them with water and get them in front of a fan or air-conditioning unit. Offer ice, chilled water or cold coconut water to drink. If there are any symptoms like rapid panting or lethargy, get them to your vet quickly. Advanced heat stroke becomes very quickly life-threatening. When out and about with your pet,

there are precautions you can take too. Never leave your animals in cars, even with windows down and a breeze. Avoid activity in very hot or humid weather. Don’t walk on hot pavement or bitumen, it can burn your pet’s feet! Don’t overexercise your pet when it is hot. And take drinking water with you for your pet (and yourself!). Captive animals like reptiles, chickens, caged birds or guinea pigs need to be able to access cool respite spots and drinking water. Misting them with water can help. Consider bringing them inside too on very hot days. And note that pets with adorable squashed up faces are more prone to heat stress so be particularly vigilant with these babies. www.thenaturalvets.com.au

y husband was only 23 years old when he first suffered from TMJ issues. He was grinding his teeth at night, he was restless in his sleep, he woke up regularly at night, and his teeth were wearing down. He was getting headaches regularly especially in the morning. He had a sleep study and they said he didn’t have sleep apnoea. Little did I know at the time that he suffered from TMJ disorder which stemmed from sleep disordered breathing because he has a small jaw resulting from extractions and traditional braces he had when he was a teenager. After I made him a sleep oral appliance when he was 30 years old, he started sleeping a lot better and the frequency of headaches has reduced as well. How common is TMJ disorder (Temporomandibular joint disorder)? The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. There is one on each side of your face, in front of each ear. These joints allow the movements needed for speaking, eating and facial expressions.

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) can cause pain (including headaches), abnormal jaw movements, joint noises and sometimes referred pain in the teeth and other muscles around the head and neck area. They are quite common. TMD symptoms If you have TMD, you may have: • Discomfort or pain in the jaw, especially when eating • An aching pain in front of your ear, which may spread to your face • ‘Locking’ of the jaw, making it difficult to open or close your mouth • A clicking or grating noise when you open your mouth or chew • An uncomfortable or uneven bite What causes TMD? TMD can be caused by a number of different things, including: • Dental (tooth) issues – for example, if you have new fillings or dentures causing an uneven bite • Wear and tear of the joint, usually caused by osteoarthritis
