Creating miracles rather than a new normal

Words DR CARL SANCHEZ, MD

I believe we need more than actions in the current situation; we need a magic miracle to get out of this ‘new normal’. And we should start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. There seems to be an environment of fear at present that we’ve not previously been exposed to. This is creating serious adverse effects in the general population, where levels of anxiety and depression have skyrocketed.

I think it is very important to have a positive attitude towards things in life to get good outcomes, and this is what makes things happen. Whether you call it ‘positive energy’ or a ‘miracle’, it is thoughts that first trigger the actions that create the changes that make a difference in times of adversity. Some people call it the Law of Attraction. Having been a doctor for the last 25 years, I always try to base myself in scientific evidence, and this creates scepticism about many things. But at the same time, I try to keep an open mind. As lots of my patients have taught me, often how and why things happen cannot be explained.

Since ancient times, we have used notions of magic, supranormal forces and religion to make sense of the beyond scientifically explainable. This could elucidate the scientifically recognised ‘placebo effect’, which is used in double-blind, randomised controlled trials as a benchmark.

In its origins, medicine believed that the basis of serious and disabling diseases had a supernatural origin. These could be brought about by the work of an offended God, a spell cast upon a victim by some enemy, or a dark force or evil intruder causing disease. As it happens right now and under the uncertainty of new illnesses, in some ways, I think we haven’t changed our beliefs and thoughts from those early times, and some try to give a scientific explanation of something we don’t understand.

There’s not a lot of common sense in some of the recent policies imposed on people, which, without any scientific evidence, have been cast as proof. Certain things in humans won’t change, but I still believe angels exist and magic happens, as you can see in the cars driving around with those little purple stickers on the rear bumper! Let’s hope this brings some positive light to these dark times.
