here is such a warm feeling reading through the articles this month about ‘family’. And of course it’s a delight to have the Fosters grace our cover and share their transformational work. The topic of family can bring up mixed feelings for many people, as it includes so much; it involves the people who make up our biological and non-biological family, the way we were parented, the way we parent our children (if we have them), and how we ‘parent’ ourselves now as adults (particularly if we have experienced abuse and/or trauma growing up). Part of living an authentic life is discovering who we really are, that is not based on family conditioning/entrainment or the limiting patterns handed down from generation to generation. People often long for a ‘feeling of family/tribe’, a sense of belonging and that special exclusive connection; my question is, have we found that connection inside ourselves? And on a deeper level, could it also be about the desire for connection with the divine or being more of our infiniteness, which creates a connectedness with our whole Earth family. On a lighter note, my Border Collie

‘FOLLOW YOUR BLISS’

teaches me a lot about connection, she often sits quietly and listens to all the comings and goings of the day and passes no judgement. She does however, have certain awareness like letting the postman and door knockers know she is a force not to be messed with. She also quite assertively puts her requests in for the day: ‘can we go for a walk, or an adventure or anything that involves swimming?’, and of course she reminds us when it’s close to dinner time (usually by placing her chin on our laps or giving us ‘that look’). She shares affection and love easily, without fear and she receives it just as easily and without expectation. She is a furry standup comedian, who even at 13 years old, works the energy in the room and can roll on her back and balance her fluffy toy in between her two front paws with such joy and skill. She is a joy master in fact, and has her PhD in playing and having fun. Thank-you to Bindy and my beautiful little family of relatives, and everyone I come in contact with through the magazine, whom I consider my family too.

Gut Healing Laksa Soup RECIPE CYNDI O’MEARA, Changing Habits

MAKES: 6 Servings Ingredients: ¼ cup pumpkin, diced ½ small cauliflower, chopped 200g green beans 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 bunch coriander 2 lemongrass stalks, left whole, though bruised as much as possible 4 Kafir lime leaves 2 cups water or homemade chicken broth 400ml coconut cream 2 tbsp Changing Habits chicken broth (or use homemade chicken broth) 2 tsp ground coriander seeds 2 tsp cumin

2 tsp turmeric 1 tsp shrimp paste 1 tbsp fish sauce 2 red chillis 1 brown onion 1 large knob of ginger Seaweed salt to taste Juice of one lime 2 zucchinis, spiralised 1kg chicken thighs, diced Method: 1. Blend together the garlic, onion, ginger, turmeric, coriander seeds, cumin, shrimp paste, fish sauce with 1 cup water or chicken broth. 2. Place all ingredients except for the zucchini in your slow cooker, and place

Colonics and children

– what you need to know

Y

ou might be wondering to yourself: “Why would a child even need to get a colonic?”. The simple answer is children get colonics for many of the same reasons adults do, although the reasons can be a little more complicated than you might think. Why would a child need a colonic? Where many adults choose colon cleansing for lifestyle and health maintenance reasons, colonics are usually administered to children for corrective reasons. Children often present with one of two problems: chronic constipation, or encopresis (fecal leakage). Irrigating the colon can go a long way to improving the child’s condition from a physical perspective, but their problem will likely return if the contributing factors aren’t also addressed. Poor diet is often the number one culprit, and promoting a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and beneficial bacteria at the expense of processed carbs and lollies is essential to

support the improvement of the child’s digestive system. Can kids cope with having a colonic? There is often complex emotional reasons behind a child’s need to have a colonic. For example, a child that is being bullied at school might choose not to use the toilet for fear of being cornered by their bully. Regularly denying the urge to have a bowel movement can quickly manifest to chronic constipation. It’s important to respect these underlying conditions when treating children, to ensure that further emotional trauma isn’t triggered. Is colon cleansing safe for kids? Colonics are just as safe for children as they are for adults. The robust design of the colon is exactly the same as an adult, just on a smaller scale. We do of course modify the treatment for children, including a reduced water flow and shorter session time. If you’re considering colonics to help your child, ask the therapist if they can provide a disposable treatment tube for you to take home and show your child prior to

the treatment. Preparing them for what to expect during the colonic is the best way to ensure they understand what is happening whilst having the treatment and how it will help them feel better. I also recommend increasing their water intake and following a diet exclusively of fruits and vegetables for a few days prior to the child’s colonic, to ensure their colon contains waste that absorbs water easily and can be eliminated effectively with lots of comfort. Is my child suitable for colon cleansing? The best thing to do is call your therapist and ask questions. They will be able to help determine your child’s suitability for colonics, based on their age, diet, diagnosed conditions and general health. Your therapist will assist with how to prepare your child physically and emotionally for the treatment, to ensure the best possible outcome for their wellbeing. www.sunshinecolonics.com.au

Coconut Jam Slice RECIPE 28 BY SAM WOOD (formerly I Quit Sugar)

This slice is an ode to our grandmothers. We’ve replaced the traditional sweet jam which drops the sugar content right down. Enjoy with a cup of tea or a spoonful of cream. Ingredients: BASE 1 cup gluten-free plain flour, or regular plain flour ½ cup almond meal 110g butter, diced into small cubes 3 tbsp rice malt syrup RASPBERRY CHIA JAM 2 cups raspberries, fresh or frozen ¼ cup water 2 tbsp rice malt syrup ¼ cup chia seeds

COCONUT TOPPING ½ cup shredded coconut Method: 1. To make the base, first preheat oven to 180°C. Line a 23cm baking tin with baking paper. Mix all of the base ingredients together until combined. Press mixture firmly into the tin. Press down lightly so the base is even. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden. Remove from oven and set aside to cool completely. 2. Meanwhile make the raspberry chia jam. Put all the chia jam ingredients into a saucepan and heat over medium heat until the mixture begins to bubble. Reduce the heat and whisk constantly

until thickened, about 3-5 minutes. Set aside to cool slightly. 3. Spoon jam over base and sprinkle coconut over the top. Return slice to the oven to cook for 5-8 minutes until coconut is golden. Set aside to cool completely before slicing into squares. www.recipes.28bysamwood.com

Just for a moment stop in a shopping centre, at a big sporting event, even watch the life in a city, the cars on roads… movement from here to there, each thing important to itself, and in a bigger picture ‘creating’ something ‘meaningful’… it all comes down to particles… particles in process. We are all light beings, we are all energetic frequencies, vibrational pulses of light, encased in physical processes creating a ‘life form’ that our soul can experience itself through. Matter, energy, light, vibration, frequency, particles, pulses… all the same things in varying degrees, sometimes intangible to hold, yet powerful in existence, profound in the intention to be and we owe huge thanks to technology for the ability to confirm vibrational teachings from ancient

masters and indigenous cultures, not just hippie dippy, new (knew) age words and wishes, but known factual information. We each are… particles of energy constantly moving, particles of light pulsing, particles of vibration weaving and creating individual human bodies built by the experiences we call stories to match individual unique soul missions. This sounds amazingly expansive, fabulously esoteric, yet scientifically it is fact. Energy creates matter, it is never destroyed, only transformed. In our old model world, we were disconnected from knowing who we really are, detached from the wisdom of creating, falling ‘victim’ to a world where we are busy doing, frantically chasing an ‘elusive dream’, never quite landing the whole vision… there was always something not quite right, not quite perfect, not quite enough that numbed us into settling for what we could manage in a safe and secure belief… we forgot that true feeling and

beings how to access creation, the wave of emotion that helps us create the life we are here to experience as we move closer and closer into the new model world. The old model world of daily life became a state of routine, habits, competition, survival, fitting in, struggle, expectation, compromise with an emphasis to focus on details. The move towards our new model world is happening, we are ‘particles in process’ of universal and planetary change, individual particles in an energetic field of awareness and evolution… we are shifting focus, habits, beliefs, desires, towards, how we want to feel and live, no matter what the external world presents… we are diving into a deeper connection with the wisdom we have to open our hearts, to listen to the soul language… particles in process of, and contributing to, a global change… each one of us is a ‘detail’ in the bigger picture. www.raelenebyrne.com

choose our family?

I

believe we choose the family we are born into before we incarnate into this human journey on Earth. That concept may rattle a few doors for some. However, it may shed light on why some of us are born into situations or family dynamics that don’t appear to be in our best interests emotionally, mentally or even physically. Sometimes asking the question “why?” doesn’t bring many answers. Nonetheless it was a question I asked myself constantly when I was growing up. Why was I taken from my parents and brothers? Why didn’t they want me? Why was it wrong to be Aboriginal? Why can’t I feel okay about myself? Why do I always feel sad? Why? Why? Why? My hidden identity and the shame that came with it, created a devastatingly detrimental effect on my own emotional, mental and eventually physical wellbeing. It is a big part of my story and influenced most of my

life. We come across many events and experiences throughout our journey that provide opportunities for the soul to learn and evolve. For a long time, I had searched to find a way to peel back the layers of story that are overlaid within the dialogue of my family, my homeland, my country and my people. I came to understand that I had fragmented, compartmentalised and hidden parts of myself to survive. I then began the work to accept and reconcile those parts within myself. It’s been an incredible journey of acceptance and allowance to heal and remember my wholeness. Part of that acceptance came in understanding the concept of zeitgeist, which can be defined as the dominant school of thought that prevails and influences the culture at a particular period of time. It was about accepting there was great ignorance and misunderstanding in the past at the time when I was born and growing

up. The misunderstanding or lack of knowledge arising from ignorance can create fear which is what my parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were functioning from. They thought that taking me from my paternal parents and then hiding my Aboriginal identity was ‘in my best interest’, however it only created a ticking time bomb inside of me that exploded and imploded in so many ways. However, my soul that cleverly chose this soul contract with these family groups, has emerged into the light. No more hiding. I now have the honour of sharing my journey truths, wisdoms and processes through my one-on-one immersions, journey work, retreats and workshops. n our current environment, today’s parents are experiencing increasing stress trying to juggle conflicting demands. This could include: working full time, keeping up with technology/ social media plus all those extra demands of supporting children with extra curricula activities. Then there is the pressure to be the best parent, employee, friend etc. With all these commitments in place – where is the time for family connection? Where is there time for parents and children to play? To be honest, time can always be found and there is a HUGE opportunity for parents to reduce stress by setting boundaries, learning to say no, and prioritising themselves first and then the family. Now this may sound selfish but, family connections are so important to the wellbeing of all. 1. Learn to say no. Parents can sometimes feel pressured in to saying yes when they would rather say no. This could be to their child, another parent, or family members. Parents often feel guilty if they do say no as their child may

feel upset or they fear upsetting someone. However, in reality, it is good self-care to say no and not over-commit yourself. Saying no to take care of your own needs, means having good boundaries in place. Remember, you have the right to say NO and be independent of others’ approval. 2. Set boundaries. To set a boundary is empowering. For example, you may decide to have every Thursday afternoon off. However, your children or family beg, coerce and badger you to take them to an activity. By sticking to your decision and saying no to others, you have just set a boundary. Boundaries are saying the rules to you and others (a bit like a policy or guidelines) as to what you want. Remember we teach people how we want to be treated! 3. Breathe and stop. This is so simple and it allows the body and nervous system to relax. As soon as you feel overwhelmed, stressed, uptight and swamped, STOP and take 3 deep breaths. Notice how your body and mind instantly have more clarity and your body relaxes. 4. Plan and take action. Each week set yourself a plan of what you want, as

this creates a bonding family connection for all. Look back over the previous week and identify what made you feel separated as a family unit. Reorganise life around what you need and have the whole family involved. Make time to do things as a TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More). Remember your family is your heartbeat. The greater family… the

way forward

W

e are very good at rallying around the family in any crisis, or at times of celebrating the many holidays and regular annual birthdays. Our biological family means a lot to us, warding off feelings of isolation and separation. In the way of a fire in the grate, family ties need to be constantly fuelled and maintained. It is family that teaches us the give and take of life… or at least, it should! As, from birth, we learn the meanings of a mother and father and the development of family ties with our siblings and relatives, we are inclined to ignore or overlook the greater family. Indeed, many people live their whole lives without realising that they are a member of the greater family of humanity. We all too easily draw a boundary around our biological family, and we all too quickly get into feuds and fights over issues, and with people

outside of our defined borders. This, in turn, leads many less benevolent people into gangs, with warfare on the city streets. We forget that all humanity is one energy. We are a single great family lost in the illusions of separation and isolation. Many people quarrel with their immediate neighbours, disliking the neighbourhood in general. From this, it is only a small step into supporting war with people in other countries. Why do we do this? It is not only because of our lack of tolerance for each other, it has far deeper roots based on our lack of patience and tolerance with ourselves. As a species, humanity does not truly approve of, or like itself. You and I both know that when the average person looks in the mirror they subconsciously criticise themselves – not good enough! This, in turn, leads to criticism of other people and an exaggerated reaction to their criticism

towards us. This, along with a huge array of other idiosyncrasies and inadequacies leads people into their own personal warfare with self. It is quoted that 20% of all relationships are abusive, with 80% of people selfabusive. This suggests that it is a rare person who is not self-critical or selfjudgmental. What is not realised, is that as you relate to yourself so you relate to all humanity. The daily act is just that, an act. While we see the greater family as separate from our immediate family, we have a lot of inner-growing to do. All humanity is one huge spiritual family. When you bring this spiritual aspect into your life, you are on the path to unity. Just as religions divide people, so our spirituality connects us. of community and cooperation, where my body and being were in conversations with all of life. Is this a common thread in relationships, families and with our children? Or are we constantly navigating a reality that keeps us locked into so many behaviours, opinions and points of view about everything, where we perceive there is only one way, through family heritage, cultural necessity and other predetermined outcomes that are expected? What if we chose beyond this reality? What if there is more and we can have it all? Choice creates awareness! When I am truly being me, I have so much more awareness of what I can contribute to others choosing to be more of them – it’s an energetic invitation that

is created. In a space of no judgment, a kindness flourishes. If we are willing to be wrong and are not invested in the outcome of any area of our life, would this create more ease, tolerance, acceptance and ultimately no judgment for what another chooses? What if a world existed where we could ask for anything we required without fear of being wrong or at the effect of judgment of self and others? A few years ago I had a dream where I saw myself being observed by a friend, as one would observe a poster of a cow with all the cuts of meat identified – she was looking at a poster of me with all my bits and judging them into existence! I was then aware of the language I was using daily – I wrote in an email to a friend that I “trusted her judgment” in relation to a comment I had written to her earlier. I was giving myself away constantly – and instead of trusting me I was only willing to be a version of myself that other people judged as being worthy – and this was normal? I have studied and trained with Access Consciousness for the past eight years gathering tools and techniques which have enabled me to choose to BE me and gain a freedom that I could only have imagined possible. Kindness is the new superpower!!

O

ur family can provide an endless source of joy, love and sharing, comfort and support. We are there for each other in both challenging times and times of celebration, whether it be a birthday, wedding, graduation, Christmas or Easter. Some of us are blessed with beautiful caring friends and we open our arms and hearts to them and they become family. Sadly, in this fast-paced and often demanding world we live in, some people have lost contact with their family and choose to walk away, instead of working out their differences. In my role as a financial planner, I have seen families fall apart over disagreements about (can you guess?) MONEY! When working with my clients, I often find couples who obviously love each other and are committed to the family unit, yet they have very different approaches and ideas about their finances. This can cause disharmony, tension and stress. I ask couples to write separate wish

lists, including their goals and dreams for the short, medium and long term. This is when we find out if they are on the same page when it comes to discussing the things they want to achieve, either individually or as a family. Many of our ideas and beliefs about money are inherited from our parents, or have been passed on from previous generations. Some of those beliefs may be beneficial and supportive, or alternatively, they are based on fear and doubt. Do you feel stuck and don’t know how to make a difference in your own life or change the negative patterns of the past? If you have ever said to yourself (or others), “I am hopeless with money”, take a moment to reflect if that is the truth or just a crutch to lean on, so you don’t have to make any changes to your current situation. It is incredibly empowering to see couples address their issues and beliefs and take on new learnings and diminish their fears. If you are in the habit of saying

future those negative words above, a powerful way to make a change is by adding, “In the past, I was hopeless with money”. Then decide to do something about it. I have had so many clients over my 30+ year career as a financial planner, say to me that they didn’t know what they didn’t know. Boost your

child’s immune system naturally

A

re you looking for natural ways to support your little one’s immune system in preparation for winter? When your child is struck down with a common cold, it can be stressful for you. But it is important to remember that it is a natural part of developing a strong immune system. The severity, frequency and how quickly it takes to resolve, are important to consider. So what is the immune system? It’s the body’s primary defense mechanism and is responsible for fighting any infectious foreign microbes that enter the body. Microbes are found in the gut and have a role in ‘communicating’ to the immune system whether to increase or decrease an immune response, technically called a T1/T2 response. Some symptom examples of a reactive T2 response would be allergies, eczema or asthma. Over the past couple of years, there has been extensive research into the importance of gut regulated immunity. Some top tips to strengthen and support a positive immune response are: • Minimise sugar intake as it feeds on ‘bad bacteria and yeasts’ or potentially pathogenic bacteria. • Increase fermented foods, such as: sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, kefir or coconut yoghurt. ate and Rob Foster are sitting in the kitchen of their new home in Tasmania, where they have just relocated from the Sunshine Coast, with their daughters Pearl, 12, and Freya, 7. On the bench behind them, a beautiful rose that Rob picked for Kate on his morning walk, leans sweetly in a glass vase. They talk lovingly about the work they do, their joy in being of service to their community, and of their beautiful, blended family (Rob is Pearl’s step-dad). “It’s easy to step back from a distance

and look at our life and see our lifestyle and look at all this, like it looks very romantic and rainbows and butterflies, and it is, but it’s also decades of inner work!” Kate Foster is no stranger to bravely navigating the inner landscape as a seeker, writer, mother, partner, and facilitator. She relates the creating of a joyful family and fulfilling life to cultivating a garden. First, you have to step back and see exactly what you are working with. Kate explains, “Before you can begin anything, you need to fully accept where you are. That’s a crucial step that is

often missed… sit here and accept that right now this is the garden we have in our life. Maybe it’s full of weeds, maybe it’s been ploughed and there’s nothing here yet, but when I can look at this and I can see this and accept, then I have somewhere to move from.” From there, you must look at what you would like the garden of your life to be, and begin planting seeds, or as Rob, a fellow seeker, student of Buddhism for 25 years, and entrepreneur explains it, “Live as much as possible with intention.” Only by consciously planting today will you create the future you truly desire tomorrow: “Whatever www.holisticblissmagazine.com

we are doing today, if we are honouring our values and bringing kindness and patience to these things, that seed that we are planting is going to be something that will reap beautiful happiness in the future.” Kate and Rob have both studied many modalities in their journey for greater truth and self-connection. It was through Family Constellations therapy that Kate first found the unshakable sense of peace within that she knew was possible but had not yet found. Without giving anything away of her own experience, she suggested Rob go as well. For Rob, he found the profound gift of being able to lovingly embrace, rather than deny or sever from, personal history and lineage. “None of this work is about changing who we are. It’s about seeing clearly.” Family Constellations is a unique therapeutic process that facilitates clarity on where you may be unconsciously carrying and perpetuating loyalties, limits or burdens from your family lineage, going back generations, to break the cycle, heal and find the freedom to truly be you. “We have these loyalties that say, ‘I won’t have more than you. While I could, I wouldn’t belong, so I will suffer too. I won’t let my relationship work either, I will struggle with finances’,” says Kate. “There are all these ways we try and belong.” Rob and Kate are now both Family Constellations therapists, who with gratitude and joy, see the freedom that their clients receive from this process. Once able to see the stories within your family system, that did not originate with you, you can move beyond them and become willing to have more of the things that may not have been very

prevalent in your family history – such as joy, abundance, loving relationships, and kindness with self. That’s when the true planting and cultivating can begin! For the Fosters, they get together with their daughters and discuss what they would like to create in the year ahead, asking, “What do we each want to contribute to the world? What do we want to learn and experience this year that would allow that?” They value realness over perfection in their role as parents, including their children in some of the difficult conversations of life, and being honest in a safe and approachable way. Having both been raised in a generation where much was hidden from children, Kate and Rob know the gift and contribution that true vulnerability creates in the family environment. “It’s a safe place to make mistakes and get things wrong and come together to heal, restore and

She also gives her best piece of advice when it comes to raising a family: “Leave them alone!” Giving each other space is crucial. “Everyone is just trying to find out who they really are in this life. The kids have their own way of navigating that,” says Rob, while also commenting they have definite boundaries. “Screen time… They don’t get a lot of access to screens,” comments Kate.

“Boredom is welcomed in our house,” adds Rob as Kate laughs, “Yes, be bored! That’s when creativity comes.” And these two definitely know about creativity! Kate has published her first book, Invitation to Trust, and is currently working on her second. She also runs women’s circles and retreats. Both Kate and Rob travel across the continent with their Family Constellations work and Rob is also writing his first book… all this, while moving to the southernmost state of Australia with two young daughters and a cat! When asked about the kids and what it is to live with kids whose ‘normal’ life is being opened to the philosophies of Eckart Tolle and having everyday discussions about what they desire to contribute to the world, Kate and Rob beam with pride. “I asked our seven-year-old the other day, ‘What do you think our family is about Freya?’ She said, ‘Oh mum, our family is about kindness and connecting with other people and helping others.’ And I’m like, ‘Yes! We are on track!’” Rob adds, “They’re so good at playing and bringing joy. We can make life and these spiritual pursuits such a big difficult thing to do, but part of it is making it playful and joyful and joking, and just light-heartedness… We all set the weather in the place, and the kids bring a lot of joy and happiness. And if they have difficult days, we try to just guide them and say, ‘How can you help someone else in the class that is having a difficult day?’ If you are always looking to try and help and benefit others, then our problems don’t look so vast. I am hoping that through us living that way as best we can, they’ll pick that up.” From what I can see, they are already reaping the benefits of what they sow. Having the

right to grieve

ne in three women from all walks of life experience unintended pregnancies ending in abortion each year and I am one of them. Abortion is a disenfranchised loss society doesn’t validate. It’s a topic so entrenched in politics and religion that women and men feel they don’t have the right to grieve. Courts adjudicating about legalising abortion or religions lobbying outside abortion clinics ignite emotions too complicated to understand, let alone confront, leaving the reality of abortion a silent festering wound impacting on the quality and wellbeing of life. People are failing to heal. But for all the regulations and protests, nothing could have punished me more than I punished myself; a life for a life. I began overworking, overburdening, neglecting self-care, denying healing and sabotaging opportunities. I stopped menstruating for years and was told I would need fertility drugs to get pregnant. I did not consciously plan children, believing I

did not deserve to be a mother. When I did give birth to my first child who developed Cerebral Palsy; I felt I was being punished. I was not prepared for the self-annihilation. Abortion grief is a delayed, slow developing, chronic grief, manifesting over years and showing up in addictive behaviours, health issues, anxiety and depression. Abortion loss comes up at different times; it’s how grief works. I was woken from sleep choking around the anniversary of my abortion, as my body tried to connect me to what was unhealed through the scene of the crime; choking as I was coming out of anaesthetic. My pattern was to be in unfeeling; because abortion pain was too much. As a Psychotherapist I knew most choices are influenced by pre-five or pre-natal experiences. To heal, I needed to develop techniques capable of accessing a pre-verbal space, and that, I did through healing dance.

It was here I accepted I did not WANT to have an abortion or to deny anything life. I was brought to my knees with sorrow and shame and I felt the hand of God, or the Universe gently rocking me. It was impressed upon me; “Spiritually, we are forgiven the moment of our transgressions; we are our own worst judge and jury”. To make good of the journey is my responsibility. What became my life sentence, became my life purpose. To bring back the learning to support other people across the threshold of pain, is my responsibility. Abortion healing is a community responsibility. To process my abortion, is a slice of a pizza I was responsible for. The rest of the pizza is divided into slices. A

s a single mother living in a different country away from my birth family, this became my favourite quote exemplifying who and where I was. If we live by these words, we will always have a family, always have a home; we will always be blessed. Creating actionable tools from these words, requires a change of perspective. What does family mean to each of us? The response will be as different to each individual as there are people. Once we change our perspective, to know that family is having someone to love, we can choose to love anyone. The quote does not say having someone love us. A unique element to our creation is whatever we extend outward, we will also experience within. When we love another, the love must be experienced first within ourselves and then extended outside ourselves.

What happens then to a society filled with self-loathing, guilt and fear? The expression of love becomes more difficult, but still possible. Self-love is the first action; what we extend out to others must by natural laws, return to us. If it feels impossible to love oneself, the next best action is to extend love to another. Many teachings express that we cannot love another unless we love ourselves; yet we live in a society filled with guilt and self-loathing. Herein is the biggest secret many do not realise: everything is an extension of oneself. If the goal is to love oneself, and eliminate the idea that guilt exists, then extend loving actions and kindness to others. Eliminate the idea of guilt by forgiving others. Stop projecting the internal guilt onto others to rid oneself of selfimposed misery. We all have somewhere to go. Whether it is our driving purpose, our

mission, our current home or the roof that covers us temporarily for shelter. While we are alive in this creation, each of us has a home. From this perspective, we are always blessed, and as such, the world must become an extension of this blessing. To know what it is to have a family, love everyone. I see a world where the grandest family in history exists, life becomes heaven experienced. That seems impossible in a world that is full of suffering. What if this starts with each one of us? Can we extend forgiveness and love to someone if it feels impossible? Is this the way to experience heaven? Forgive and extend love to someone today, especially if it feels difficult. y mother (Sikara) was chronically ill with a mystery disease where she became severely fatigued, her muscles were derogating and she lost her appetite and all of her weight. Looking at my mother, we could all see she was very sick, however, every time we tried to admit

her to hospital, she was turned away. Her mental health deteriorated rapidly after being bedridden and unable to look after herself, she lost all hope and faith of ever getting better, so on the 8th of February 2019, she made the decision to end her life. My mother was my first spiritual

teacher, she saved my life years before from a life of addiction, physical and sexual abuse, and deep self-loathing and suffering. She was the only person who continuously believed in me and saw my potential; losing her was like losing my foundations. What helped when my mum passed

was making the decision that I was going to make the grieving process a beautiful spiritual experience. First thing I needed to do was find out what happens when we die, where do we go and then what? It was a comforting thing to me, I needed to know my mum was okay. I watched as many videos as I could, read all the books on the subject and spoke to as many knowledgeable people as I could; all of this gave me added confirmation to my faith. With all this information gathered, I was able to see death as part of the enigma of the soul and of life itself; understanding death really means understanding life. During life as we know it, the body is vitalised by the soul; upon death, there is a separation between body and soul. But the soul continues to live on as it always has, now unfettered by the physical constraints of the body. I was able to grasp this concept and really on a deep level understand that my mother’s passing was just the end of her life experience. I realise now that I only lost her physical presence in my life. Now I had to learn how to connect with her in different ways. I have now found that her essence and influence still lives on. This breakthrough was so powerful and it gave me freedom from the pain, and lifted a heaviness from my heart.

Her death provoked such strong emotions in me, I found it very useful to have a clear channel through which to express them, to go about healing in a constructive way. Every opportunity to attend a healing circle I would take. I found that sound healing was very useful for the first couple of weeks, as stagnant energy would build up quickly within my body. I would spend every moment I could out in nature and around loved ones, but I also sat quietly in solitude and watched my thoughts and passed no judgement on what I was thinking or feeling. I let my emotions run freely from me like a free flowing river (one of the most important ways to release emotions is through crying). I never once held back my tears when I felt the need to cry. I realised that holding on to the pain or keeping my emotions or unresolved trauma bottled up, could possibly lead to problems in the future like diseases or negative life experiences. I found it could actually hold me back from healing and create imbalances within my body which I didn’t want, I wanted to move on fully. I discovered a powerful way to empower myself while grieving is positive self-talk and self-care. I made myself feel special and loved by making it a priority to look after my well-being. I spoke to myself so lovingly and became my

own best friend and positively validated everything I was feeling. I held space and stayed fully present in each moment and took it day by day and with that I gained an incredible amount of self-reliance. Never let anyone take your power away by pushing their idea of what grief should look like on you, we now know that grief includes a wide range of emotions, thoughts and behaviours and that it doesn’t help to think that grief will always happen in a predictable and orderly way. Everyone moves through grief in their own unique way and each individual may experience it very differently. My mother’s passing was a new experience for me; uncharted territory. I learnt so many things about myself that I didn’t know. I felt a deep love and respect for myself that wasn’t there before. I found a power in me that I never knew existed and realised that it was actually me who built my foundations. But one of the most important things I learnt was that I was able to unselfishly let my mother go in peace, and I finally understood the true meaning of what unconditional love is. Womb twin survivor grief WORDS JO HAYTER

V

anishing twin syndrome is common. Chimera is the presence of two or more population of cells with different genotypes in one individual who has developed from a single fertilised egg containing two sets of DNAs, with the code to make two sets of organisms. Chimeras happen naturally in humans; that a foetus can absorb its own twin if it dies, arising from exchange of blood cells through placental anastomoses. Many zygotes (foetal mass) divide and grow into fully formed twins but when a foetal mass dies; the dead material matter is reabsorbed by the mother or the living twin without a trace. A study of many thousands of pregnancies (Blockage, C.E. 2990) revealed that for every live born twin pair, there are 10 twin pregnancies that end in early pregnancy, with a sole survivor. As approximately 1% of births are twins, that figure suggests at least 10%

of the population is made up of womb twin survivors; and most do not know it. Exploring womb twin survivor indicators will be healing for those who have not healed despite many interventions. Peri and pre-natal studies reveal experiences even at pre-conception, at conception, in the womb and at birth shape our emotional and physical health today. Womb twin survivors experience a duality; they can feel pulled in two directions. They tend to unconsciously take on their twin’s journey, denying their own destiny. They take on health issues belonging to their twin out of survivor guilt. Different sex twins can feel like they should be the opposite sex; females may feel like they should have been a boy, males can feel like they should have been a girl. Womb twin survivors can feel a very deep unexplained constant sadness. They can feel different

to everyone else but don’t know how. Many womb twin survivors cannot relax, they run on adrenalin and overdrive. They feel someone will die if they relax, and their twin probably did; while they were sleeping. Womb twin survivor guilt is such a complex and disabling grief because people don’t know it’s there, but the good news is the fallout can be healed. Progressive Psychotherapists now firmly believe that no satisfactory explanation or integration can be completed until it reaches the earliest levels of the mind because, it is before birth that the psychic foundation for our being is laid. I

love nothing more than to contemplate the mysteries of family, in particular the dynamics of my five siblings and I. Three males who strongly deny there is any such thing as male privilege, despite the fact that one of them has never had to look for or apply for a job in his life and yet has always been employed. And despite the fact that each of them owns their home where they raise their children, two with the children’s mother and one with his new partner. Two of them own the businesses they work in and the third works for one of them. Alongside my sisters, one an entrepreneurial self-made millionaire, another a very proudly employed corporate careerist – both married long term to army men, with grown children, their own homes, rental properties and retirement funds. Each, seemingly, without faith of a spiritual or religious nature. And then there is me! The spiritual one!

I no longer call myself the black sheep but I often wonder where I came from amongst this crowd I grew up with. You see I’m the anomaly and as I listen to the stories they tell of our childhood, I often wonder where I was because the re-telling doesn’t match my experiences or memories. As a group they are loud, opinionated and rambunctious, where I am quiet and inner-focused. As a child I was totally overpowered by their personalities and I shrunk into myself… scared to speak and be seen. As an adult there is the whole psychic, channel spiritual thing that separates us. They are uncomfortable with talk of spirit and unseen things and I am afraid to share too much in case they ‘make fun of me’ – a favourite pastime in our youth. These days I find myself more at home amongst my soul family; those select few who ‘get’ me, at home where it is easy to be seen and heard.

o often I come across clients who are struggling with family members who are a toxic influence in their life. Often people are left to make a decision if they should cut these people from their life, and are feeling so hurt; frustrated; and confused about it. It can be hard to walk away from friends, but when it is a family member, it can be absolutely excruciating, even if the person has been downright horrible. For many it is like literally ejecting yourself from your own tribe. We are conditioned to belong to tribe for our very own survival. But so many people are finding that they need to look beyond their blood family now to find their soul tribe as they don’t feel like they belong in their family or can no longer stand their toxicity. To have to cut ties off from toxic parents and/or siblings is one of the

toxic family members

most heart-breaking decisions we have to come to. It can be confusing, especially when one has been the subject of a narcissist parent’s toxicity most of their life. Realising you are not a bad person; or you are not who your narc parent has made you out to be, can be one of the most freeing moments on your soul’s journey. This is a journey about self-discovery and self-love, and it is my experience that often cutting ties is an essential part of the journey in order for you to find yourself, and then give yourself the time and opportunity to heal and build your inner light. Here are a few points I’d like you to remember when sitting with the decision to cut ties, or if you have and you’re struggling with the decision: • You have the right to exercise healthy boundaries for yourself! This is part of your own personal and spiritual

journey, finding the love within to do this for yourself is essential; • You are not a bad person! You may feel guilty around your decision, or others are trying to send you on a guilt trip that you are confused or overreacting. This is just more of the manipulation; • I know this is difficult, but they usually won’t change. After a period of time of discovering your true self, healing and building up your selfesteem, you may consider being back in their life, and this is perfectly okay! As long as you don’t have the expectation that they have changed or will change; • The capacity in which they have to love you is not a reflection of you and how lovable you are. D

eepening intimate relationships in amongst the roles, responsibilities and chaos of family life can be hard. But it is possible. When things get hard as a couple, our safety net is: 1. Check in with yourself. Establish your own personal level of selfconnection (apply self-care first-aid if required). 2. Remind yourself not to take everything so personally (when we are tired or in pain we don’t see clearly). 3. Discern if more or less space is required. 4. Remind yourself of what you truly value most, be honest, are you prioritising these values? 5. Trust the seasons and be grateful for what already exists in this moment. 6. Seek external support, we are not meant to do this relationship/life thing alone. In our home, things begin to get messy when (as grown-ups) our self-

connection gets low. Sometimes this happens through travel or work, other times it’s simply a natural part of family life. If awareness walks in the door at this point, life stays simple. We simply acknowledge, as grown-ups, that we are not as connected as we may like to be and are needing some space to self-care and self-connect. Often we catch this moment, and sometimes we don’t. If we manage to remember our safety net at this point, life gently returns to balance. BUT if we miss it, I guarantee you, one or both of us, will begin taking things personally. From here things can spiral down very quickly, but the good news is, they can spiral up equally as fast. As humans we all have the capacity to project our feelings out onto the world and blame others for our own inner states of being. This is not a new phenomenon, it didn’t start with us, it was something we learnt as we grew up. At times we all taint

our current relationships with past pain and hey presto, we find ourselves in an overwhelming mess. BUT we are hardwired for forgiveness and connection. It’s in our very DNA to reach out, restore and deepen our relationships. No matter who we are or what our worldly success appears to be, balance and connection rise and fall like the tides for each of us. Our relationships will endure – summer, autumn, winter and spring. So take the pressure off your relationships to be in an optimal state of health 24/7. Seek support as individuals. Self-care. ave you ever had one of those experiences that are nice at the time but later you reflect what a powerful, life defining moment it was? Me too. I remember standing on the tarmac of a small airport. My dad had his own small plane and was getting ready for take-off. He was a pilot and loved everything about planes; air shows, documentaries, he ‘geeked out’ on it all! So, anyway, I’m on the tarmac watching my dad take off in his small plane. The airport was small enough that I could see the smile and excitement on his face. He looked like the happiest little boy when the wheels lifted off. Pure glee! This had been his ‘job’ for about 40 years by then. The joy had nowhere near diminished. How cool is that for living with passion? Now I see that I was handed a permission slip to do what I love for the rest of my life and be paid handsomely for it. For many people, the reality is

something different. It’s been reported up to 80% of adults are in jobs they don’t love. This breaks my heart! Due to this permission slip handed to me, I’ve had a job I love for 25 years. Yoga teaching, retreats and teacher training facilitation, have transformed who I am. It’s given me a partner, family, home and countless wonderful friends and connections. I feel blessed. I

have a very different point of view about business in that I’ve always seen businesses as their own ecosystems that can thrive for hundreds of years after their conception, be a contribution in the world and give back to the local communities. I grew up dreaming of creating a business like this, yet any time I attempted to follow someone else’s paradigm for how to create a business, it fell flat on its face (as did I) because it simply was not my way of creating. So, after several failed attempts that included investing everything I had, not to mention the thousands of hours put in, I chose to create my business, Pacha Blu, from the wild idea that I may actually have a level of knowing that was valuable even if I had no business plan or set of rules to follow. It was time to trust in myself! In February of 2018, the 12-year old idea of creating a luxury fashion brand

sustainable, luxe fashion business to fruition

that provides the world with 100% baby alpaca wool garments, all hand-made from scratch in the highlands of Peru and supporting the local communities, sparked in my mind again and I chose to jump on a plane to Cusco where I could explore the textile culture of this beautiful country. The moment I landed, and with suitcases fresh in hand, I jumped in a taxi and asked the driver where I could find women who would teach me about textiles. “Not shops or factories,” I exclaimed, “take me to the towns outside of the city where the ladies speak Quechua and their techniques have been passed down generation to generation”. And that’s how my adventure began. I spent seven days travelling from town to town, discovering market places, home-based production centres, and learning all I could about alpaca wool, one of the treasures of Peru.

During this time I was a question machine. I asked everyone what they knew, where to go, but more importantly, I asked myself. And I listened. I didn’t listen to my mind or the flurry of thoughts and doubts, I listened to the gut feeling that I know now is the true compass from where every great business is created. Pacha Blu has taught me that creating a sustainable business like this is much easier than creating one that is not. The main thing to do is to get out of your head, and let go of any preconceived notions of how business should be created, while being prepared to make choices that are energetically expansive. t’s 2019 and more than ever as we are all living together in this global village, the age-old saying “it takes a village” is certainly one that I live by. A

s an holistic doctor, I look at every aspect in life to maintain health. Self-care is essential to keep ourselves sane. But what does selfcare really mean? In health care, self-care is any necessary human regulatory function which is under individual control, deliberate and self-initiated. Some put self-care on a continuum with health care providers at the opposite end to self-care. In modern medicine, preventive medicine aligns most closely with self-care. My medical practice involves guiding my patients to make the necessary changes to their lifestyles to prevent illness. Unfortunately, a lot of people come when they are already sick, making things much more difficult to restore their body functions. This is exactly what we want to prevent. People have different preferences in life, running around with a busy schedule without realising that time flies and getting into an unhealthy routine, creates the environment to get sick. It is extremely important to have time

out and disconnect from the rat race. I personally find it essential to reconnect with nature, as this is where we come from. Recently I went on a trip to the Simpson Desert and when I told a few people, some looked at me with disbelief. Going to a really remote area is an amazing experience where there is nothingness, just sky and dirt, to recharge the batteries and get away from the monotonous daily routine. And camping by an open fire, being able to watch the stars while you are curled up in your sleeping bag, makes the trip worthwhile. MY PERSONAL SELF-CARE TIPS: • Start with clean water and real food to nourish your body and mind. Select organic, unprocessed foods; nothing in a packet or that has lots of numbers and names that you can’t pronounce. Check out one of my favourite recipes, ‘Sausages with onion gravy’ p232 from the ‘The Complete Gut Health Cookbook’ by Pete Evans and Helen Padarin. • Get in contact with nature where

you are surrounded with nothing ‘material’. Explore different areas where you have never been before, awakening the curiosity of the mind in the search of new experiences. • Take time out of your daily routine and grant yourself a holiday; it does not have to be expensive! The simpler, the more enjoyable. Cycling and hiking are my favourites! • I recently started challenging myself with new movement exercises where the co-ordination of body and mind have to engage as one to get the right results. Things like slack lining, hand stands, back bends, juggling, to name a few, turn on different areas in your brain that might not have been developing in the past. Focus is diverted from looking outside of you for solutions to the inner motion of your bones, fluids, muscles and organs. Looking for solutions, is looking for a way to fix something. A more natural approach is through observation; observing your patterns of movement within a task that either contributes to ease and power or causes pain and effort. In that way, one taps in to the

senses and a relationship of trust and compassion is fostered. Concepts of what is right and wrong can be put aside and we can extend ourselves physically, emotionally and spiritually, at all times in touch with where we are, how fluid and free our movements are and how to position ourselves safely for the next movement. I

t has been stated, “Dogs have owners and cats have staff” which means that if you think you own a cat or two you are quite incorrect. Cats own you. If we can get the ownership wrong, then we likely need some help deciphering their place in our families. Cats are mostly solo individuals, and are serious leaders and decision makers for their household. This might be perceived as being snobbish, but they are not really aloof, more likely not impressed with trivial matters! Did you know that cats are perpetual breeders? At my veterinary clinic, I once had a female 16-year-old ‘very fat’ cat present for jaundice, i.e. liver failure. The owner thought this ‘post-menopausal” female furry was just fat – but the radiographs proved that this momma kitty was in fact heavily pregnant. Cats make cat families ad nauseum, if you let them. If you are lucky enough to be owned by a couple of cats (or by several cats!) you will appreciate that some cat psychological social work may be in order. For the sake of cat kindness and cooperative kitty care, here are some tips

to help your hairy harmonious herd live together. Occasionally, when you add a new cat member to your tribal family there may be some signs of conflict. For instance ‘pee mail’ could be their particularly unpleasant answer when there is some unrest. Their solution might be to spread the love, or anti-love as ‘Eau de parfum de moggie’. Please remember that your kitties like to be clean, so supply one kitty litter per cat, plus ONE extra. This means that if you have two cats, you need three litter trays, and they also prefer different substrates – some like sand, others ripped cardboard and absorbent papers. If they can use a cat flap and are safe in your suburb (away from cars and cat/ dog attacks) most cats prefer to have the privacy of the great outdoors to do their business; much like some drunken male humans.

If you have two cats that aren’t compatible, consider management techniques. Punishment or threat tactics are not allowed, don’t startle, chase, squirt, spray or scare, as they will not find the other cat ‘ok’ then. The startle strategies may stop an aggressive event but does not promote an environment for reconciliation. Our clinic at Animal Wellness, East Brisbane, does regular work for several cat charity groups, to enable them to deal with the inevitable ‘Kitten Tsunami’ that comes around a few times a year. o so many of us, our fur babies are our family. They’re not just a cat or a dog and we don’t treat them like they are ‘just’ some ‘thing’. We treat them like they are family. We love them so much and we will do whatever we can to make sure they are happy and healthy. I meet many people in my practice who say to me, “he’s my baby” or “she’s a part of the family”. And I totally relate to that because that is exactly how I feel about my cats and dog. They are a part of my family and they mean the world to me. This love, this kinship, that people feel for their pets is one of the reasons why people reach out to me. Many people are turning towards nature when it comes to their own wellness. And there is an increased awareness that food is so important for our health. And the best food for good health is whole, clean food that is as close to nature as possible. In conjunction with this, people are making efforts to reduce their personal exposure to toxins. In addition to

choosing organic foods that haven’t been exposed to pesticides, people are choosing safe, natural remedies over (or in combination with) pharmaceutical medicines. They are interested in healing disease rather than masking its symptoms. People who are making these choices, might then start to think about how they are feeding and treating their pets. Perhaps they want to ensure that their cat or dog is eating a diet that will promote health and prevent disease. Or perhaps their animal is sick and they want to help them heal using safe, natural remedies. have been anticipating this family edition for months, and I’m excited to finally read the gold within these pages. Family has always been an interesting theme for me, it’s been a journey, which has had its challenges. I was born in New Zealand, but adopted by my aunt as a baby, travelling to Australia at 21 days old to live, away from my extended family. I grew up knowing I was adopted, but not the circumstances. It has been a journey of love, but also tears and generational trauma, which still manifests in layers. It is quite the emotional pilgrimage and lifetime adventure. I always yearned for a family of my own. I started pretty late, having my first child at 34 and my second at 40. The first few years as a parent was filled with juggling university studies, corporate work, and day-care, but once we moved to the Sunshine Coast when

my youngest was three, we were able to create a flexible family and work environment, as two self-employed parents with a young family. Now, as a single mum, I feel very fortunate to be working from home and able to be present for my children who are 13 and 19. My youngest commenced Distance Education this year, doing her schooling online, reducing the anxiety she suffered in mainstream school. It’s a great option for us! My son has ventured out to university and education beyond the Sunshine Coast but has recently made his way back, albeit temporarily due to a change in his circumstances. It is wonderful to be there for them if needed, as they each navigate their personal growth until they are ready to fly on their own. We are also home to a lovely Brazilian high school student, who is part of our family for a year, and

enjoying all that the Sunshine Coast has to offer. She is lots of fun and we love having her around. People are often surprised when I tell them the Holistic Bliss team creates a monthly magazine working remotely from different cities, with contributors across the globe. We are a family committed to expanding awareness of what’s possible for our community, and for our planet. As a synergistic collective, we are greater than the sum of its parts. Working from our respective locations we create, write, coordinate, communicate, design, distribute and deliver a wonderful publication each and every month.
