hat does ‘whole’ mean to you? As always, we have many different perspectives on this theme and as you turn the pages, what resonates with you?

When I reflect on ‘the whole’ I think about how the magazine is created… a wide variety of people all sharing their magic to make up the whole magazine.

Each person’s energy is a contribution and adds a unique ‘flavour’ to the whole edition and then all the messages and energy filter out into the world. What a joy!

Most of our articles address the whole person, not just isolated parts or things and we look at covering many aspects of living from relationships, to food, to the environment, grief and loss, business, holistic beauty and natural animal care…

Grilled Fish with Sautéed Onion and Burnt Lemon RECIPE HELEN PADARIN

Onions are one of the unsung heroes of the health world, as they provide the prebiotic inulin (a type of fibre) that gut flora convert to helpful shortchain fatty acids. Another wonderful thing about onions is that, when cooked slowly, they add a natural sweetness to dishes. This simple dish is a lovely way to get dinner on the table quickly. Feel free to add a dollop of homemade mayonnaise or aioli or some sliced avocado to enrich the dish.

Serves 4 Ingredients: 2 tbsp coconut oil or good quality animal fat, plus extra to rub 2 onions, sliced into rings 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped ½ bunch chives, snipped into 2cm lengths Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 x 150g snapper fillets (or any whitefleshed fish of your choice, such as barramundi, cod, mackerel or mullaway), skin on 2 lemons, halved Olive oil, to serve Chilli flakes, to serve

Method: Melt the coconut oil or fat in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook, tossing frequently, for 8-10 minutes until the onion starts to caramelise. Throw in the garlic and chives and sauté for 30 seconds, or until the garlic is fragrant and just tender.

Season with salt and pepper.

Heat a char grill pan or frying pan over high heat. Season the fish with salt and pepper and rub both sides with the extra coconut oil or fat. Place the fillets, skin-side down, in the pan, cover with foil and cook until golden brown (about 3 minutes). Remove the foil, flip the

fillets with a spatula and cook until the fish is just cooked through (about 2-3 minutes). While the fish is cooking, add the lemon halves, cut-side down, to the pan and cook for 1½ minutes until nicely charred.

Place the fish on serving plates and add the sautéed onion. Drizzle on some olive oil, sprinkle with some chilli flakes, then squeeze some burnt lemon juice over the top.

A

s an integrative doctor, I see a lot of people suffering from different medical conditions, where the start of their problem is in the gut. Unfortunately, a lot of degenerative diseases started with the modern diet and processed refined foods and sugars are the mayor culprits. These foods feed the wrong bacteria in our gut, causing fermentation, with production of alcohol and acetaldehyde, which are both toxic to the gut lining.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth or SIBO, is something fairly commonly seen in my practice.

This is where excessive bacteria in the small intestine causes a range of different symptoms, from mild to severe, like bloating, chronic diarrhoea/constipation, weight loss, malabsorption, etc. This is seen typically in patients where iron and B12 levels

are low and possible causes have been ruled out through history, endoscopy and blood tests.

Over the recent years, this has been aggravated with the excessive use of antacids, as unhealthy processed foods and alcohol causes reflux, adding more issues to the problem of an unhealthy gut. From my clinical experience, removing these foods, normally results in symptoms disappearing.

There are studies showing an association between SIBO and lots of medical conditions like coronary artery disease, irritable bowel syndrome, liver disease, to name a few. Add to this the use of common herbicides disrupting the soil bacteria and it is a recipe for disaster. If we poison the soil, we are poisoning ourselves, having an effect on our gut health.

Mexican Black Bean and Wholegrain Salad RECIPE KELLY SMITH

W

hen teaching in my cooking classes there is one tip I really highlight to people if they want to maintain a whole food diet in a simple and efficient way. And that tip is to give yourself the gift of an hour or two of meal prep time. By doing this, you know exactly what you’re eating, what’s in it, and most of all you know that what you’re eating is good for you!

Try this Mexican wholegrain dish – you can enjoy it hot or cold!

Ingredients: 2 cups of wholegrain or choice quinoa or brown rice 1 tin of black beans 1 jalapeno 1 red capsicum 2 round tomatoes 3 kale leaves de-stemmed 1 corn cob Half a red onion Dash of olive oil Mexican herbs such as: 1 tsp of dried coriander 1 tsp of dried oregano 1 tsp of dried cumin seeds 1 tsp of dried chilli flakes 1 tsp of dried paprika 1 tbsp of nutritional yeast

Method: Put 2 cups of brown rice or quinoa to a small pot with 3 cups of water and cook with 1 tsp of wakame flakes.

Dice jalapeno, capsicums, tomatoes, kale and onion and place in a large mixing bowl.

Remove kernels from corn and add to mixing bowl. Add in mixed herbs and give a generous stir.

Once your grain has cooked, add all to the mixing bowl and stir through. Add salt and pepper to taste.

It’s routine! That’s why when we travel for work or leisure, many of us experience a change in bathroom habits. Jet-setting makes us more susceptible to stress, junk food, late nights, dehydration and nasty bugs, so here’s my tips to help you enjoy your trip without digestive side effects.

KEEP THINGS MOVING #1 Constipation is the number one gastrointestinal complaint people experience when travelling. A great supplement I recommend to help stay regular on the go is Magnesium Citrate.

T

here is not one word in the English language that would respectfully articulate New Zealand’s majestic wonder. With its undulating green hills and 60 million sheep, deep blue oceans, exquisite lakes, remarkable mountains and idyllic scenery I feel you cannot help but be stricken in complete awe when you visit.

As a Kiwi I feel when it comes to wildlife you will be spoilt for choice, from seals, penguins, dolphins and whales to alpine parrots, tuatara, tui and of course the nation’s sweetheart, the kiwi.

I would describe the people of NZ as welcoming, laid-back and friendly types with a penchant to ‘give-anything-a-go’.

You will find an esky is more correctly known as a chilli-bin, thongs are jandals and a dairy is in fact a local corner-store where you can get the most exquisite Hokey-Pokey ice-cream.

Place names are not easily said and many of us Kiwis enjoy seeing the look on foreigners’ faces when places like Whakatane are correctly pronounced ‘fuk-a-tarn-aye’.

New Zealand is definitely home to the mighty ‘All Blacks’, ‘Lord Of The Rings’, ‘Crowded House’ and ‘Phar Lap’ and more.

Respect for the land, clean-greenliving, the Maori culture and such diverse multi-culture is something we are proud of. I particularly love the fact we sing the National anthem in both languages. 1. Clear your prejudgements What does work mean to you? Hard slog? Pressure? Creativity? Fun? Let go of all the definitions, projections, expectations and judgements you have about what work should be. They will keep you from seeing everything that is possible right here and now in your current role or beyond that. Question what else is possible beyond working, a job or career that you would love to do or create and make money with.

2. Does your work still work for you?

Are you energised by what you are currently choosing, or drained? What lights you up about your current work?

3. Your reality reflects your viewpoints Be aware of your thoughts,

feelings and emotions around your work because they create your reality.

Returning to Aotearoa six years ago, I concluded it would be hard to run my coaching business and unschool my son here. Guess what? For the first year it was hard. Once I gave up that viewpoint, possibilities popped up everywhere to where now, I have multiple businesses, easily travel for work whenever required, and my 12-year-old son is well cared for. An unconventional lifestyle, but it works for me and my family. What could the work-lifestyle mix look like for you?

4. Choose to have more fun Something as simple as taking those dance lessons you have long wanted will shift the energy in other areas such as your work. What interests you?

hances are, you were taught that the way to happiness is “out there”. For example, when I climb the ladder at work or make a certain amount of money, then I will feel successful. Or, when I find and marry the right person, then I’ll have true love and feel complete.

Yet, what happens when you strive to achieve those things out there and fall short every time? Or, maybe you are actually able to achieve that thing… for example the good job, the love or the approval of others, and it might actually bring you happiness for a while but then it doesn’t last. You’re back feeling frustrated, angry and alone.

After time, you begin to feel resentful, angry, frustrated, disappointed, even depressed, because this plan for your life isn’t working out the way it was supposed to.

Only when you’re willing to make the changes from within, will you create authentic and lasting happiness and love.

How do I know? I’ve been there and

I know what it’s like to wish someone or something would change so I could be happy.

What I know today is everything you see around you in your life is just a reflection of what’s going on inside you. To make lasting changes, you must make the changes within yourself. When you make the changes within, what I refer to as ‘the more real,’ everything around you seems to change.

The first and most powerful step is recognising your blind spots. Blind spots are connected to beliefs and fears that are getting triggered inside you. These fears and beliefs are rooted in the past and are keeping you stuck… keeping you from moving forward to the life you desire.

Blind spots such as the fear of rejection, abandonment or betrayal or the need to control or to be perfect.

Blind spots like worrying about what people think and comparing yourself to others. Whatever your specific blind spots are, chances are good they are

or a young child or teenager to feel whole, they need to know they are loved and accepted for who they, their mistakes, their gifts, their challenges and their evolving personality are in to adulthood. This is the meaning of absolute empowerment and this will allow children to feel happy, healthy and confident.

Having worked in the medical field as a nurse, there were many times I heard children being told they were not whole or parents were told their child was not whole. That instantly destroys a child’s self-esteem. This is also happening in the education system too. There is an easy solution to having children feel whole and growing up to being confident adults. It is knowing the child’s gifts and challenges and teaching the child these and assisting them to work with what they have.

But this can be their challenge, as there is duality to all wholeness according to Sacred Geometry.

As CRYSTAL children do not like kinaesthetic learning, they can get stuck actually practising what they learnt which leads to procrastination. Only working to rules and regulations means that they sometimes do not think outside the square and allow themselves to be creative. Thinking, processing and analysing, means the CRYSTAL child can over-think things, procrastinate and be the perfectionist. Knowing this about the child, and then the child learning things for themselves, allows them to balance their own lives out so that they feel whole, complete and confident.

In this case, the CRYSTAL child learns she/he is whole by seeing both sides to life, themselves and their gifts.

Sometimes our gift is our challenge.

According to universal laws, everything is already perfect and whole so when we are challenged, this allows us to tap in to our innate wisdom to see the whole picture. Children do this easily when they say ‘why’. Have you noticed they

Is your being ‘good’ getting in the way of your being WORDS ROSEMARY COLSTON

W

e are born in a state of wholeness. We have no sense of right or wrong, good or bad. We just are and all we really want is to love and to be loved, and to this day, if we peeled back the layers of everything we did, we would find at the heart of our actions this drive to love.

In our very early years we look for the formula for love. For many, we learn that being ‘good’ is essential to being ‘loved’. Our parents unwittingly transmit this learning to us through the reward and punishment of our ‘good’ and ‘bad’ behaviour, respectively. This form of conditional love progressively fractures our sense of wholeness, resulting in our self-subjugation of the ‘bad’, or secret self, into the ‘shadows’, and the self-promoted ‘good’ self, which is made publicly visible. This process occurs before memory and becomes an overwhelming subconscious behavioural protocol, which leaves the

individual under-resourced, lopsided and guaranteed to make for a wobbly course through life; being ‘good’ becomes an affliction.

Being cut off from the wholeness of our being is disabling. The inner and outer struggle that ensues, subsequent to our learned judgment and condemnation of that which is perceived to be ‘good’ and ‘bad’, both within us and between us, gives birth to an inner punitive voice that leaves us drained and distracted.

Having our behaviour held to ransom over some ill-defined concept of ‘goodness’, with its historical roots buried in a distorted morality, wherein ‘work’ and ‘suffering’ were akin to godliness, is outmoded, and suffocating of a full, thriving existence. Love is, after all, the gateway that allows us to switch out of surviving into thriving. If our formula for love is faulty, so too will our ability to successfully navigate

We, as individuals, need to have the kind of inner revolution required to overthrow the old formula for ‘love’. Our lovability must not be dependent upon things like our appearance, our house, our earnings, or how much crap we will endure. We need to adopt a more wholesome formula for love, whereby, we know that we are still lovable irrespective of how ‘bad’ our fame, fortune, or good looks are, or even if we simply refuse to oblige a request. In order to claim our whole light, we must pass bravely through our shadows.

with Brian Q: What inspired you to start working in the healing field?

A: Back in 2004 I had a near death experience at work, where I fell 3.5 metres and ended up in hospital for a few days. This gave me time to heal and reflect on my life, it also gave me time to question life in general about why we are here. I realised that we are all just programmed from generations of learning, including race, culture, religions and governments. I also realised that we all need to find our own truth in life and we all need to learn how to stop judging people including ourselves, as our ego’s need is to keep us in control.

Q: How would you describe the work you do?

A: Emotion Body Release – was put together by myself and my guides as I was dealing with, and healing my emotions from the things that I had been through in my life. The work is a simple, safe and effective way of releasing emotions. The person is guided through the process and they can stop it at any

time. It also releases emotions that we pick up from other people who we are close to.

What most people don’t realise is that emotions are just energy that we store in our body which attracts more things into our life, which triggers the same emotions over and over.

Q: What changes have you seen in people?

A: Most people feel relaxed and lighter after a session, they also walk away feeling more empowered and in control. For some it is subtle and sometimes it can be extreme to the point where one woman looked 5 to 10 years younger.

Because the treatment is done by the person coming for the healing, the more they are willing to put into it, the more they get from the treatment. It’s a bit like going to the gym; the more effort you put in, the bigger results you get.

Plus they have the bonus of being able to walk away with the tools to do it themselves.

Q: What are your plans and projects this year?

A: My short-term goal is to help as many people as I can with this process, whether it is one-on-one or by running workshops on the process to teach others, as well as teach and open up people’s awareness to the different energies that are going on at the moment so that they can also help others along their path. I also intend to visit and work in all the main cities in Australia this year.

My long-term goal is to open up a retreat and healing centre here in Queensland, where people can come in to learn how to find themselves or to pick up life skills.

ometimes our greatest life challenges, can show us who we really are! Seven years ago Lee Holmes received two diagnoses which turned her whole life around and her healing story over subsequent years has inspired people from all over the world to not only live and eat consciously but create yummy, wholesome food, easily.

Imagine for a moment, your health deteriorates over a number of years.

You’re a single mum working fulltime and for a long time you have felt constantly fatigued; like your body isn’t working properly, you start falling asleep in work meetings, you come out in hives, your hair falls out in clumps on your pillow and you lose a lot of weight in a month without any real explanation.

Then one morning you wake up and you literally can’t move…

These were some of the symptoms that Lee could no longer ignore which eventually led to a diagnosis of a

non-specific autoimmune disease and fibromyalgia. After a big search; going from one specialist to another, in and out of hospital for six months, she came across an amazing immunologist Professor Wakefield who finally made the diagnosis.

Initially she was prescribed a concoction of medications and said the side effects from these were almost worse than the symptoms of her illnesses. This didn’t feel right to Lee so she started to ask questions and noticed when she www.holisticblissmagazine.com

ate processed meals and foods with additives/chemicals, her symptoms flared up. Lee’s light bulb moment was when a friend bought her the ‘Food Matters’ DVD, and straight away the ‘food as medicine’ philosophy resonated with her whole being.

So she obtained permission from her specialist to make changes to her diet and stopped eating foods that were processed, or had MSG, preservatives and additives. She also cut out caffeine, alcohol, sugar and gluten and started to feel a lot better. Lee eventually weened herself off all the medication she was taking by keeping her diet clean and simple. She added anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric to her daily regime and increased the amount of raw garlic she consumed, which meant she was able to cut down on the antibiotics she was prescribed. Even though she had studied nutrition and went to cooking school, she didn’t find a lot of people who could assist her at the time with natural healing so her holistic approach was based on her own research and trial and error.

The relationship between stress and her illnesses became another important factor to address. She reflected on her hectic work schedule seven years ago when she headed up the ‘ABC Kids Music Team’, winning record labels such the ‘The Wiggles’ and ‘Bananas in Pyjamas’. While she loved the job, the stress of budget deadlines and long hours took its toll. “Stress was a big part of my illnesses. I noticed during really stressful times, my fibromyalgia symptoms would flare up,” she said.

Lee’s holistic search to heal her life opened up a whole new world. She cast the net wide and explored the area of holistic wellness, becoming a yoga teacher and travelling to India to study Ayurveda. Lee mentioned, “with fibromyalgia, changes in weather conditions can lead to flare-ups, if you do too much you’ll get pain but if you don’t do enough you can get really stiff, so finding what works for your body, (for me it’s walking and yoga), but it is all about balance.” Living according to your constitution really appealed to Lee and she has integrated this Ayurvedic concept into her work, life and cooking.

“All I wanted was to make simple beautiful affordable recipes that would improve people’s health,” she said.

It was only natural that Lee desired to share the information she found

with others. But when she started a small blog to share her tips, recipes and experiences, she wasn’t expecting to receive such a big response. People shared their auto-immune symptoms and a lot of common stories were expressed, such as: being prescribed steroids and then blowing up like the ‘Michelin Man’. Lee said she was inspired by their tips and they were inspired by her information and so they supported each other in an online forum which has had lots of ripple effects.

Lee eventually found a naturopath and nutritionist and felt a big part of her healing was restoring the state of her gut health. She also interviewed gut experts from all over the world and discovered they all agreed on these three areas: 1. Have diversity in your diet and all the colours of the rainbow.

2. Have a high plant-based diet 3. Reduce stress for good gut health When Lee was 17 she would get cystitis and be put on recurrent antibiotics which reduced all the good bacteria in her gut so healing was a priority which took time. “I believe the gut is the epicentre of the body, 80% of the immune system is located there. Our gut health is connected with our weight, our cravings, hormones, digestive health, mood and the way we sleep.

Our gut flora is like a community which has conversations with each other in a biochemical way. And we need some bad bacteria to keep that balance too.”

Lee shared, some diets don’t have enough fibre rich foods and she believes it’s not good to restrict food groups. Also, if you do eat something that is not that great for you, it’s best not to worry and ruminate about it but instead move on and make a different choice next time.

For people who are unsure of where to start with making changes to their life and diet Lee suggests, “make changes layer by layer and do it slowly. I did a

four-week easy-to-digest diet to start with. Raw food and salads gave me bloating so I ate everything that was cooked or squished or smoothied.”

Sugar feeds the bad bacteria in the gut so she avoided all forms but now her gut has healed, she has raw honey and a bit of coconut sugar.

“It’s taken a few years to get my energy levels back and I’m about 90% healed, it’s not just about looking at your diet, it’s looking at everything holistically,” she shared.

Lee teaches yoga every week and also goes to classes herself twice a week and to further manage stress, she listens to online hypnosis CDs. She has always gone to church from a young age and still does for the reflection time. She believes so many people don’t give themselves this sacred time and it’s what is so needed in our society.

Family time is also a special part of Lee’s life and she loves making her healthy, wholesome creations in the kitchen for her husband (whom she married last year) and two stepsons who are 11 and 15. She also has a close bond with her 22-year-old daughter whom is currently studying philosophy in Sydney.

Lee is a rare balance of ‘power house’ creator and kind, gentle, wise soul. Her healthy, creative heart focus is clear.

ou know those times in your life when you reflect back and think, wow I was so brave; I didn’t put any brakes on what my heart wanted to experience! What experiences were those for you? Seventeen years of age was that for me!

It was the year I made the choice to be an exchange student in Sweden for a year. Sweden for me represented adventure, possibilities, new friendships, exploration and yes, Swedish boys!

When I arrived after a long, long flight and stepped outside into -10 degrees temperatures, with an extra three layers of clothing, I remember feeling excited about this BIG life change!

So, what happens to that fearlessness with change in our 30s, 40s or 50s and beyond? How can we believe that ‘change’ equates to possibility and opportunity? Why aren’t we always actioning a new adventure, just like we may have in our younger years?

The answer: societal conditioning and old, limiting beliefs! Our hearts are

whispering or perhaps screaming out for us to follow the path of love and our beliefs, create some pretty imaginative stories like: “No one else is doing it”, “Life is comfortable so why disrupt it”, “I need security so ‘that’ dream will have to remain hidden in my heart” or “It’s not possible to follow that path with a growing family”.

A client of mine has been facing her own big life change possibility!

She yearns for a new career, lifestyle and connection with her boyfriend.

Her partner has asked her to come and live with him in the city, however her experience with partnership is what she’s witnessed in her home growing up with her own parents. They separated when she was a toddler and unconsciously she has been creating a space of separation in her own relationship! Her perception from what she has seen is that relationships end and separation is the result.

etting comfy in your skin often means making new agreements with yourself. Three I can recommend are: 1. Love yourself beyond the confines of your understanding.

2. Love yourself as fiercely as you love others.

3. Forgive yourself when you get it wrong.

Until I had children, I was at constant war with my body. I was forever imposing some new eating regimen, exercise structure or criticism upon it. I wasn’t comfy living in my skin.

It was another way I felt inadequate, not enough. As with all challenges, eventually I reached my limit. I was no longer willing to consciously criticise myself. I had two daughters. If they were to have healthy relationships with their bodies I couldn’t continue to brutally attack myself on the inside.

Children are wise. They would have absorbed the truth of what I felt about myself, change had to come.

I knew I had vast kindness and compassion to offer others, but I was yet to offer this same salve to myself. It was time. My ‘not enough’ story had to end.

So I learnt to dance naked in front of the mirror, to hold my shame and awkwardness as precious as I held my beautiful babies. I made friends with my wobbly bits, my stretched and tired bits and I unwaveringly committed to building a friendship with all of me.

For the first time, I asked my body, “What do you want to be? What do you want to eat? How do you want to move and express your divinity?” And to my shock, it answered. I listened. And just like that, the war with my body ended.

wants. I listen to that small still voice that quietly answers. My weight cycles like the seasons, yet no matter what the scales say, my inner guidance is gentle and clear.

Asking my body and patiently listening, is a practice that nourishes me inside and out. I trust my body now, it knew the way all along. I care for it so that I may bless others.

We only have one vessel for this life. It may not be perfect, but maybe we can love it anyway? Or in the least, maybe it’s time to begin a conversation of kindness?

“Taking the time to play”

P

laying connects us with our inner child. As an artist, I have journals for writing and journals for art practice. The journals I keep for art practice are mostly full of colour and design, a place for me to experiment and see what works and doesn’t work. I use it as my jumping off point for larger art pieces and canvas works. I have special journals that are just for playing in, these I don’t show others, it is strictly for me. I use these for my expression and freedom from restraint, where I don’t have to conform to rules.

These fun journals, as I call them, are great to let go of my serious side and play. The connection with hand, brain and paper evokes mindfulness and in turn is directly linked with happiness. Journaling brings you into a state of mindfulness and by coming into

the present moment, past and future drop away. It helps you actively engage with your thoughts.

Unlocking your creativity through writing without thinking or ‘stream of consciousness’ writing allows you to express thoughts you may not think were in there. Creativity can flow and if you write first from your stream of consciousness before you start to draw, your outcome may be very different. I feel for me it is like a deeper connection to the self and the divine.

Journaling and drawing exercises help you to gain more confidence.

You may journal or paint about a happy experience you have had and by doing this, you are connecting back to a feeling of happiness. This affects the brain and releases dopamine and endorphins which have a positive effect and will boost your self-esteem.

Goal setting exercises flag a message

to the brain that this is important.

Setting long and short term goals are the building blocks to our future dreams and desires.

In my workshop ‘Journaling and Art Practice with Gold Lotus Oracle Deck’ I ask my students to select a card and journal about what they feel. I ask a series of questions and use this as a starting point to explore and create a symbol or marks that then become part of the drawing or painting in which they express a feeling or emotion. If others are to look at the finished work they may not see the underlying expression but may feel an emotion behind the work. This workshop is fun and light and allows you to explore and selfreflect in a positive environment.

Why is

self-talk

important for wellness?

H

ave you thought about the relationship you have with yourself? What about the way you speak with yourself?

Do you speak harshly, frequently telling yourself how you aren’t good enough, smart enough, don’t have enough motivation or willpower? Would you speak that way to others?

Or perhaps you do speak more gently to yourself. Perhaps you speak to yourself in the same caring way you speak to people you love. If so, you’re positively affecting your physical wellness. And if you’re a wellness practitioner, you’ll likely understand how important this is in your communication with others.

Why is this talk – this personal and interpersonal communication – important for our wellness? Let’s consider our autonomic nervous system (ANS). The functioning of the ANS can be understood as the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the ANS. We can think about the relationship between sympathetic and parasympathetic

functioning by considering that the sympathetic system works as the body’s accelerator, and the parasympathetic as its brake (a useful metaphor from Stephen Porges, in Neuroception: A Subconscious System for Detecting Threats and Safety).

Too much activation of the sympathetic nervous system can result in the excessive release of cortisol, and cortisol can adversely affect physical and emotional health. Too much cortisol in our system results in things like a reduction in muscle mass, increased bone loss, interference with the generation of new skin cells, an increase in fat accumulation, and reduced memory and learning abilities.

(Dawson Church elaborates on this in his book The Genie in Your Genes: Epigenetic medicine and the new biology of intention.)

Surprisingly, one of the ways many of us trigger the sympathetic response and the related increase to cortisol levels is through our harsh self-talk.

These processes are also relevant in the way we communicate with others, both

in our personal and professional lives.

Anyone who interacts with people in their day-to-day lives will attest to the importance of good communication skills, and speaking and being spoken to with kindness.

Today, we are all becoming more aware of how we can improve ourselves to enjoy a better life. Those of us who work as wellness practitioners are usually required to demonstrate that we continue to learn and refine our practice, as well as give attention to our own mental, emotional and physical wellness.

Whether you are a wellness practitioner or simply interested in building strong and healthy relationships, there are many tools we can use to enhance our personal and professional relationships – and our relationship with ourselves. Hi Joan, The matriarch of the home always seems to be the glue of the family. If you are happy it ripples out to everyone. So my reply to you personally is, start to do things you love, to get the passion of life back, spirit will mirror you.

Follow hobbies and do things that make your heart sing. There will be a flow-on effect. The card I pulled for you is ‘Native American Shamanism’. S

ome of my family were travelling in the car a couple of days ago; my son is learning to drive and I’m learning to be calm when not in control of the car! Our discussion included where we’d like to travel, who plays what instrument and many other topics. I said I’d like to learn to play a new instrument, maybe the guitar, then I was reminded it’s not too late and I do already play – singing bowls, gong, hand drums, tuning forks and the Tibetan bell.

The next comment surprised me, “you can sing too Mum”. A very confident “No”, was my response. “Yes you can, you just aren’t confident,” my son assured me.

That’s true, ever since Mr Music Teacher in primary school graded me with a ‘C’ in singing – before that I would happily sing loud without caring what others thought.

Interestingly, a week before this

conversation I had bought ‘The Naked Voice – Transform Your Life through the Power of Sound’ by Chloe Godchild, as I have been thinking of putting toning vocals on the meditation songs and recorded healings I’m making, which seems less scary than singing (I like to challenge myself!)

In this book Chloe Godchild writes, “Your sound is the invisible architecture and geometry of your emotions, expressing the relative resonance or dissonance of your relationship with Earth, humanity, Heaven and the whole universe.” She concludes, “audible frequencies that harmonise and unify us, transform our negative emotions into deeper positive feelings.”

I have experienced and witnessed (through assisting others) how not expressing who we are greatly affects us, so in what ways are you not expressing?

Think about this, write a list, detailing what makes you feel whole such as:

writing, gardening, painting, cooking, research, complex maths. Are you expressing yourself fully in these areas?

They’re not hobbies, they are an aspect of you.

Whichever way we express, suppress or repress, creates a vibration.

I accepted that music teacher’s assessment for too many decades, when it was one person’s opinion on one day, and it may not have been a good day for him… in other areas of his life, who knows?

So what I’m saying is do what you love, express freely, wear stripes and spots together if you feel inspired.

Creations don’t need to be perfect, they need to be started, embraced and shared or kept personal and sacred.

his Easter many celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead as stated in the New Testament. But very few know that cannabis played a big part in the Bible including the anointing of Jesus Christ prior to his crucifixion. If Easter is a sacred time for you, then you may enjoy my Sacred Biblical Anointing Oil recipe below. But first, let us look into the history of cannabis and the Bible…

During these last days before His crucifixion, Jesus stayed in Bethany on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives. This famous anointing by Mary took place two days (Matthew 26:2 and Mark 14:1) before the Passover at which Jesus was crucified. The anointing oil includes Kaneh-Bosm (cannabis).

Author Chris Bennett, claims that the plant Kaneh-Bosm in the Bible was indeed cannabis: “In 1860 the Ohio State Medical Society concurred with Biblical scholars that ‘the gall and vinegar or myrrhed wine offered to our saviour immediately

before his crucifixion was a preparation of Indian Hemp (cannabis)’.

“If cannabis was one of the main ingredients of the ancient Christian anointing oil, as history indicates, and receiving this oil is what made Jesus the Christ and his followers Christians, then persecuting those who use cannabis could be considered anti-Christ.

The holy anointing oil, as described in the original Hebrew version of the recipe in Exodus, contained over six pounds of Kaneh-Bosm – a substance identified by respected etymology, linguists, anthropologists, botanists and other researchers as cannabis extracted into about six quarts of olive oil along with a variety of other fragrant herbs.

The ancient anointed ones were literally drenched in this potent mixture.

“The first solid evidence of the Hebrew use of cannabis was established in 1936 by Sula Benet, a little known Polish etymologist from the Institute of Anthropological Sciences in Warsaw.

The word cannabis was generally thought to be of Scythian origin, but Benet showed that it has a much earlier

origin in Semitic languages like Hebrew, and that it appears several times throughout the Old Testament. Benet explained that ‘in the original Hebrew text of the Old Testament there are references to Hemp, both as incense, which was an integral part of religious celebration, and as an intoxicant’.

“Benet demonstrated that the word for cannabis is Kaneh-Bosm also rendered in traditional Hebrew as Kaneh or Kannabus. The root Kan in this construction means ‘reed’ or ‘hemp’, while bosm means ‘aromatic’.

“This word appears five times in the Old Testament; in the books of Exodus, the Song of Songs, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel.”

February 2015: I signed up for Dmitri’s Transformation program and at the time I was at least 35 kilos overweight. At my first fitness assessment I weighed in at 107.09kg, unable to do more than three pressups or sit-ups and took 20 minutes to walk 800m. It’s safe to say that I was appallingly unhealthy, unfit and unhappy. The first four weeks of the program were the most challenging because my body had little energy and my mind struggled with motivation.

But I managed to sustain it, I had to, it was ‘do or die’ and I had made the commitment to get healthy and focus on my children as the reason to get up and keep going.

March 2015: After the first few weeks my body started to adjust to the positive changes. I began to feel much healthier, energised and stronger in my body. I could achieve sets of 10 sit-ups, press-ups, squats, triceps with weights, AND I could see below my belly button.

This realisation, although a scary sight,

made me giggle out loud. My exercise sessions slowly became training sessions and I developed a sense of humour about my physical flaws and poor fitness. Dmitri applied this brilliant technique of distracting my mind from feeling sorry for myself by either telling me adventure training stories or getting me to tell him stories. This strategy worked well for me.

By April 2015 training was more enjoyable, I had lost 10 kilos and although my weight stagnated at 97.8 kilos, my healthy eating and fitness activities were daily routines. At this point I began to appreciate Dmitri’s skills as a PT, I didn’t know much about him other than he was the owner of FamilyFitNation, so I googled his name.

It turned out that my long suffering PT was actually a widely acclaimed and awarded chef and a world class triathlete who trained professional athletes. I decided then and there I was the luckiest grossly obese 40-something Mum and I had better stop complaining

or decades, we’ve been told to ‘slop’ on sunscreen whenever we get out in the sun (in order to avoid skin cancer).

But we need to take a closer look at this… The truth is that for generations, prior to the introduction of chemical sunscreen, there were few cases of skin cancer.

For thousands of years many longlived cultures have worshipped the sun for its physical and emotional, life-giving energy. The sun has been the very source of all life on earth and is actually vital for preventing a host of cancers and even avoiding and overcoming depression.

There is a compelling relationship between the increase of skin cancer diagnostics and the mass-marketing of commercial sunscreen that began in the late 1950s.

In addition to ‘food-less foods’, ‘lifeless drinks’ and the chemicals people put on their bodies each day, there is an argument that the primary cause of skin cancer is not getting enough fresh fruits

and vegetables grown seasonally (in the temperate zone where people live) into their diet on a regular basis.

‘whole’ mean to me?

very year I take a God-inspired word into the new year.

This year it was ‘revelation’.

Now, I’m still exploring the full meaning of the word as it unfolds in my life.

So far I have learnt this. My identity is not my looks (as they are fading) nor my money (as I’m only getting it together now), my business or brain.

It’s my heart and sunshine that people gravitate to. How wrong I have been for

so many years. I’m still in shock that my super fit, totally gorgeous husband loves me with complete zest as I’m fading so spectacularly!

I guess I underestimated my essence. The whole of me that is shining brighter with every decision I make to forgive. To love.

I crave the whole person I am. I crave the parts that were overlooked to make way for the show.

So as my phones flash up with messages of love from Romanian children that I helped up from utter despair, I have the revelation of the word whole! Such a fulfilling spirit shaking experience, to lift others up.

So as my body’s facade fades, my being gets a chance to live. For me to be whole requires others to be whole.

when making self-care

elf-care is important. We know it to be true but with our busy lifestyles are we really making time for self-care and time-out? The pressure to be all things to all people is common.

We know there are days where we need to take a slow breath, we know we should have chosen healthier foods, or taken a yoga class, yet with the best of intentions – it just doesn’t happen.

There are three things to consider when it comes to making self-care a priority: 1. A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE 2. USE THE TIME YOU HAVE 3. PRACTISE MAKES PERFECT 1. Take a moment to change your perspective, you may find a better understanding of your purpose. If you stand on the first floor of a hotel looking out the window, it would be a completely different viewpoint to that of the 18th floor. Self-care can be the same. It might be seen as self-centred or

hedonistic from the 1st floor viewpoint especially when you have a job to do, a home to run, children you are responsible for, a partner and all the other day-to-day tasks that are required of you and there is little time.

But if you travelled up the elevator to the 18th floor maybe your perspective would change and you would see a far greater picture, have a greater understanding and a bigger purpose. You could see how imperative it would be to look after yourself, to be fit and healthy in order to do all those things well.

2. Life is busy but everyone has exactly the same 24 hours a day to do the things they want to, or need to do.

The question is will you use it as an excuse or make good with the time you have? You can do self-care all day at a day spa if you fancied. But you can also do self-care in 10 seconds just by sitting there, taking a moment, spritzing the

antiperspirants: Part 2

Parabens and breast cancer It has been suggested that antiperspirants might be a cause of breast cancer, because they contain a variety of chemicals that are applied frequently to an area directly adjacent to the breast.

The strongest supporting evidence comes from clinical observations showing a disproportionately high incidence of breast cancer in the upper outer quadrant of the breast, exactly the local area to which antiperspirants are applied.

The belief that parabens build up in breast tissue was supported by a 2004 study by Dr Phillipa Darbre, which found parabens in 18 of 20 samples of tissue from human breast tumours.

Dr Darbre said, “These results are of concern because parabens have been shown to mimic the action of the female hormone oestrogen, and oestrogen can drive the growth of human breast tumours. The fact that parabens were detected in the majority of the breast tissue samples cannot be taken to imply that they actually caused breast cancer in the 40 women studied. However, the fact that parabens were present in so many

of the breast tissue samples does justify further investigation.”

Aluminium and breast cancer Oestrogen is a well-established influence in breast cancer. Some research suggests that aluminium-based compounds found in anti-perpsirants, may be absorbed by the skin and cause oestrogen-like (hormonal) effects.

Results demonstrated that aluminium in the form of aluminium chloride or aluminium chlorohydrate can interfere with the function of oestrogen receptors of human breast cancer cells. This adds aluminium to the increasing list of metals capable of interfering with oestrogen action and termed metalloestrogens. Aluminium is known to be genotoxic, capable of causing both DNA alterations and epigenetic effects, which would be consistent with a potential role in breast cancer if such effects occurred in breast cells.

An earlier age of breast cancer diagnosis related to more frequent use of antiperspirants and underarm shaving Findings from a study examining the

frequency of underarm shaving and antiperspirant/deodorant use among 437 breast cancer survivors were released in 2003.

This study found that the age of breast cancer diagnosis was significantly earlier in women who used these products and shaved their underarms more frequently.

Furthermore, women who began both of these underarm hygiene habits before 16 years of age were diagnosed with breast cancer at an earlier age than those who began these habits later.

While these results suggest that underarm shaving with the use of antiperspirants/deodorants may be related to breast cancer, it does not demonstrate a conclusive link between these underarm hygiene habits and breast cancer.

ancer; we are all touched by it at some point in our life – whether as patient, carer, support team or observer. No matter what your role, it is one we all wish to do without. Cancer is the name given to a collection of related diseases. In all types of cancer, some of the body’s cells begin to divide uncontrollably and destroy body tissue.

Carcinogens are chemical, physical, biological, or any substances that are agents in causing cancer. If allowed to accumulate in the body in large amounts or for extended periods of time, there is a higher likelihood that your cells will become damaged, resulting in the growth of cancer cells.

How can we avoid carcinogens?

If you don’t know what carcinogens are, you can’t avoid them! Surprise, they are everywhere and if you are using conventional products and eating processed foods, you are ingesting, inhaling and absorbing them everyday of your life.

First of all, you need to become

Processed Meats. In 2015 the World Health Organization officially classified red and processed meat as ‘carcinogenic’ – anything that has been salted, cured, fermented, or smoked by adding chemical preservatives, which means hot dogs, sausages, bacon, ham, corned beef, salami, frankfurts, dried meat such as beef jerky, and canned meat or meat-based sauces.

Carcinogenic chemicals can also form during meat processing.

Red meat, such as beef, lamb and pork has been classified as a ‘probable’ cause of cancer. When a chemical in red meat called haem is broken down in the gut, N-nitroso chemicals are formed and these have been found to damage the cells that line the bowel, which can lead to bowel cancer.

ental extractions can be tricky, especially with guinea pigs. For a year Braveheart the guinea pig had regular tooth trims because of uneven wear and growth. Common dental problems for guinea pigs include insufficient wear of rear teeth, causing them to grow over and into their tongue which is painful and inhibits food intake and digestion. Braveheart’s rear teeth were okay, but a front lower incisor was overgrown. Perhaps his early start to life in appalling conditions with an inappropriate diet and inadequate Vitamin C (required for immune, bone and tooth health) had contributed to this.

Though his herbivorous diet now consisted largely of fresh silica rich grass (great for abrading teeth) and high cellulose plant foods, with good vitamin and mineral content, he needed dental treatment.

Subsequent to trimming his lower incisors, gentle probing revealed a suspected fracture. Guinea pig teeth are long, extending well into the jaw, and a surface visible fracture can mean further damage below the gum line remains unseen without radiology or extraction.

A fractured tooth is painful and needs

treatment. The tooth tip was discolored indicating it was likely dead, and needed extraction.

There were two options for Braveheart – surgery or euthanasia.

Surgery with full anaesthesia requires careful management at the best of times, and guinea pigs are highly sensitive to all drugs, making it especially risky.

Euthanasia was an option as the fractured tooth and subsequent pain were unmanageable as they were.

Surgery was opted for, and Braveheart was anaesthetised. Successful tooth extraction, including the root, took place and the gum stitched closed. The fracture extended for most of the tooth length. Ouch!

Braveheart’s ordeal wasn’t over. His tiny body still needed to recover from anaesthesia, process drugs out of his system, recover from stress (guinea pigs are extremely susceptible to stress), and show evidence of normal kidney and liver function. He was provided with additional fluids during surgery to assist with this.

Two days post-surgery Braveheart’s recovery is continuing. He’s eating well, is bright and alert, has healthy urination

and plenty of poos, indicating good organ function. He’s also being provided with poo from healthy guinea pigs.

Guinea pigs are hindgut fermenters and practise corophagia (eating their own poo). Excreted bacteria are re-ingested to repopulate gut microbiome, especially in the large intestine and caecum where fermentation takes place, breaking down cellulose in ingested plant material.

Braveheart’s getting plenty of dietary Vitamin C from organic vegetables, herbs and fruits (red capsicum, kale, kiwi fruit, broccoli, parsley), celery tips for liver health, and supplemental hay, lucerne and pellets. Food and nutrition is really important for a guinea pig’s overall health and tooth wear.

Inappetence, weight loss, drooling, a mouth that remains open, and an inability to consistently pick up and chew food, can indicate dental problems for guinea pigs. If you suspect any dental problems with a guinea pig, seek veterinary advice. Prevention and early detection are critical. www.animalwellness.com.au

W

ith so much information available on animal ‘training’, how do you know what’s best for your animal companion and you? Here’s the lowdown: everything you see, read or hear is merely opinion, suggestion or guidance; what works for the majority may not work for everyone. Just as every human individual has quirks and idiosyncrasies making up their personality, character and responses, so too do non-human animals. That’s why, for example, socialisation works well in particular settings and timeframes for some animals while others might withdraw and become fearful in those same settings and timeframes.

Disregarding an animal’s nuanced responses and cues about how they’re feeling in relation to things, and continuing to push them toward desired outcomes or what common literature suggests, creates tension. When humans push to create their desired version of an animal, rather than appreciating the animal as the individual they are, then humans lose the connection, trust and respect from the animal. That connection, trust and respect however,

is the very thing that will contribute the most enrichment and harmony in any interspecies interaction. To encourage it is to slow down and let go enough of your own agenda to allow the relationship and individuals within it to know one another, to know themselves in relationship, and thereby know themselves.

Whatever stage of animal companionship you’re at, I invite you to remember the following two things.

Firstly, you’re becoming friends with someone who neither verbally speaks your language nor has your same limbs with which to gesticulate sign language, so you understand it might take careful observation and listening with your eyes and intuition to know one another.

Secondly, you’re prepared to be patient and sensitive to their wants and needs, and to compromise as needed, to ensure balance and harmony of being.

A simple example of this in action is observing a dog wanting to frequently stop, wee and sniff on a walk. Knowing this, you provide these opportunities through letting go the need to have them walk to heel or in a straight line or even to follow the same pathway every

day or to say hello to every person and dog along the way. You use long-lining, you allocate time for exploratory dogled walks, and you allow your dog to be themselves, thereby allowing them to grow into their self-confidence and relationship with all things, knowing you’re at the end of the lead to guide, support and protect them on their journey to self-discovery. Remember, you’re their teacher and guide in an often human-dominated world, rather than their disciplinarian or controller.

A

s an holistic veterinarian, I see many pets suffering with a vast array of acute illnesses and chronic disease, and one of the hardest parts of my job is knowing that many of these problems can be prevented by setting the pet up for a lifetime of wellness, by providing the correct diet and exercise, reducing toxic input, understanding the pet’s psychology, and meeting their basic needs.

Many people have the tendency to put physical disease or emotional challenges down to genetics, or past traumas, but in fact the health trajectory of almost every pet (and human) can be changed at almost any stage by implementing correct diet and lifestyle practices. You can set your pet on a path to health and vitality, and it is never too late!

There are crucial steps along the path that need to be implemented in order for robust health to manifest. One of the most important, but often forgotten, is avoiding or minimising toxicity.

What is toxicity? Toxins can be inputs from the external environment, such as: contaminants in one’s food or water supply, inappropriate diet selection,

vaccines and medications. Toxins can also be internally generated, such as the by-products of digestion and metabolism that require filtration through the kidneys.

The body becomes diseased when toxin levels in the body overwhelm the body’s detoxification capacity, and physical health is impaired as a result.

Easy ways you can reduce toxic input for your pet include: • Feeding a species-appropriate, raw, organic diet • Following a minimal vaccine protocol • Providing pure, filtered or distilled water as their water source • Consider chemical-free alternatives for parasite control • Supporting your pet with supportive herbal or homeopathic medicines when they become unwell, rather than pharmaceutical drugs that may not always be needed • Ensure your pet’s bedding (where they spend much of their days) is toxinfree • Avoid using toxic chemicals around your home and garden for cleaning and pest-control purposes

There are also ways to support the body’s detoxification processes to work optimally: • Ensure your pet is getting adequate levels of appropriate exercise • Spend time in nature, amongst the elements – earth, sun, wind and water are all cleansing for the body and mind!

• Fast your pet on water regularly – either a 24-hour water fast once a week, or a longer 3-5 day water fast once a month or at the change of season.
