Matcha Kiwi and Avocado Smoothie Bowl RECIPE KELLY ALEXANDER

S

moothie bowls are such a great way to enjoy everything you love about a smoothie, with a little extra fun and sustenance. If you find your morning smoothie doesn’t sustain you for too long, try topping it with some extra nuts, seeds, dried fruit, fresh fruit, oats or activated buckwheat. You can also try adding a teaspoon of plantbased protein for a little extra substance.

SERVES 1 Ingredients: 1 banana (preferably frozen) ½ a ripe avocado 2 leaves of kale, stems removed ¼ tsp of orange zest 1 tsp of Matcha powder ½ tsp of ginger powder

1 kiwi fruit (skin removed) 1 tsp of coconut oil ½ cup of your favourite plant-based milk Method: Chop up your banana, avocado and kale and place them in a blender with the remaining ingredients. Blend on high until smooth and creamy. Pour your smoothie into a bowl and top with: 1 tsp of buckinis 1 tsp of pumpkin seeds 1 tsp of coconut shreds 1 tsp of dried rose petals A few slices of blood orange for garnish or any toppings of your choice www.raw-by-nature.com

Hoke Poke Bowl RECIPE KELLY ALEXANDER

T

raditionally, the Hawaiian Poke Bowls are made with fish, so I decided to call my bowl the ‘Hoke Poke Bowl’, just for a little fun! This bowl is so tasty, and it carries me back to island style living every time I make it. I think it’s the grilled pineapple. If you’re dreaming of sunshine, salt-kissed skin and endless carefree days, this bowl may just help carry you there. Ingredients: THE BOWL 1 cup of cooked brown rice ½ a packet of organic tempeh ½ cup of edamame beans 2 radishes thinly sliced 1/8 of a pumpkin, skin removed 2 tbsp of alfalfa sprouts 2 large slices of pineapple cut into quarters TEMPEH MARINADE 1 tbsp of tamari 1 tbsp of olive oil 1 tbsp of coconut nectar 1 tbsp of lime juice 1 tbsp of chopped ginger

MACADAMIA, GINGER & LIME DRESSING ¼ cup macadamia butter 1 tbsp ginger chopped 1 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp tamari 2 tbsp coconut milk 1 tsp coconut nectar 1 tbsp water Method: FOR THE TEMPEH Slice the tempeh long ways and then divide into triangular pieces. Mix all of the ingredients for the marinade together in a bowl. Add the tempeh and coat each side well, then marinate for at least 2 hours. FOR THE BOWL For the pumpkin, use a regular vegetable peeler to peel long strips, like as you would grate a carrot. Place the pumpkin strips aside, along with your sliced radish and alfalfa until you are ready to build your bowl. Heat a griddle or regular frying pan and place the pineapple slices on one side and the tempeh on the other. Allow to

cook for 3-4 minutes and then flip each piece and remove when golden on both sides. FOR THE DRESSING Blend all ingredients until smooth and creamy. To serve: To build the bowl, divide the brown rice, pumpkin, radish, pineapple, tempeh and sprouts between two bowls evenly. Drizzle the bowls with the dressing and serve. D

o you suspect that you may have a food allergy or a food intolerance? It is important to know the difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance; because there is a difference. A person with a food intolerance has difficulty in digesting and processing food correctly due to a lack of certain enzymes in the gut. Having an intolerance can make you feel miserable, foggy headed, inability to concentrate, headaches, excessive gas and bloating, lethargic and many other unpleasant reactions. To find out if you have a food intolerance you might like to try this: For 21 days eliminate foods you suspect are the cause. Then add the food back into your diet one by one with at least three days apart to find out if you have a reaction. Make sure you read labels when buying packaged foods. Food allergies, due to the person’s immune system generating an antibody response when ingesting food,

even a microscopic amount, or by touching or inhaling the food can have serious consequences and even be life threatening. Research indicates that the number of people with allergies is increasing at an enormous rate in both developed and developing countries. Entire food groups can cause an allergic reaction. This can manifest with headaches, aggressive behaviour, depression, and a myriad of unpleasant symptoms, not to mention being the cause of asthma and anaphylactic reactions that can be deadly. Have a blood test to see if you have any allergies or test yourself or a loved one if you wish. I found the following test a few years ago. Give it a try. Using a watch with a second hand, sit down and relax for a few minutes. When completely relaxed, take your pulse at the wrist. Count the number of beats in a 60-second period. Normal pulse readings by way of age, are:

• Children 1-10 years of age: 70 to 120 beats per minute • Children over 10: 60 to 100 beats per minute • Adults: 60 to 100 beats per minute • Well-trained athletes: 40 to 60 beats per minute. After taking your pulse, consume the food that you are testing for an allergic reaction. Wait 20 minutes and take your pulse again. If your pulse rate has increased by more than 10 beats per minute, omit this food for one month, and then retest yourself. Make sure the foods you are testing are from the purest form. For example if testing wheat, do not test it in the form of bread. You need to use the grain and make it into a paste. Even the smallest amounts of offending foods that you are allergic to or intolerant to can make a difference to your immune system. www.cancertowellness.com

What is

Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

I

rritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the most common gastrointestinal tract diagnosis. In fact most people we see in the clinic exhibit some form of IBS symptoms. For an illness that affects approximately 1 in 5 people worldwide, there is still very little known about the causes and best treatment of IBS. What is IBS? IBS is a broad, symptom-based diagnosis, that encapsulates a wide range of digestive system issues. Most commonly patients will present with recurring abdominal discomfort that is associated with bloating/gas, mucus, and accompanied by changes in bowel habits. Patients may be constipation or diarrhoea predominant, a mix of both, or develop post-infectious IBS after a bout of gastro or food poisoning. If you suspect you may have IBS, it is important to seek a proper medical diagnosis to ensure that other gastrointestinal complaints, such as colon cancer, can be ruled out. Impact of IBS on quality of life IBS can significantly reduce a

patient’s quality of life and ability to work. Clients often report the anxiety of having to ensure they are always near a toilet for those unexpected urgent trips to the bathroom. IBS sufferers also say they have a reduced social life and can become more reclusive as the chronic bloating can impact everything from how your clothes fit, how comfortable you feel, to what meals you can eat out. IBS solutions Because IBS symptoms vary from person to person, there is no onesize-fits-all cure for IBS. However IBS sufferers can make proactive lifestyle choices to assist in reducing their symptoms, including: i) Diet – There is strong evidence to suggest that IBS symptoms worsen with certain foods or beverages. American Journal of Gastroenterology found that increased physical activity improves IBS symptoms so effectively that it should be used as a primary treatment modality. HB: How did your recent NZ experience shape the work you are now offering in NZ? Tony: During my trip I was surprised to see that alternative therapies appear to have a quiet presence (certainly on the South Island), and wondered how many alternative health services are presently available throughout the country. Perhaps there were many services that I just didn’t come across, or I wondered if alternative health is still in a growth phase in New Zealand? Either way, I’ve felt the time is definitely right to offer a ‘Regression Therapy Training’ to those seeking to learn or expand their complementary health practice in the NZ communities. HB: What sort of issues do you work with and how can people benefit from the work you are offering? Tony: Over the past 15 years I’ve had the privilege of working extensively with regression therapies to treat a wide range of human issues. These have predominantly focused on resolving negative emotions and thought disturbances, trauma recovery and integration, healing problematic childhood memories, changing unwanted behaviours, and treating issues to do with life purpose – the underlying spiritual meaning of life’s circumstances. Regression therapies are not limited

to these issues, there are a wide range of symptoms that can be treated. All treatments are mainly concerned with the nature of memories and how they shape who we are – changing the effects of negative memories is an important aspect of fully healing an issue. It can be common for negative experiences from the past to have major implications on personality and behaviour, so these therapies are designed to heal emotional disturbances in body, mind and spirit, to create a far more empowering future. For those who have been interested in the work of Brian Weiss, Michael Newton, Dolores Cannon or Tad James, this course is an amalgamation of approaches from these and other regression pioneers, and is the product of 15 years of developing a regression therapy model based on the best techniques available. nown as the grandfather of Kirtan or yoga’s rock star, Krishna Das – Kirtan Wallah sings with the most remarkably soulful voice that touches the deepest chord in even the most casual listener. Krishna Das affectionately known as KD, spent the late 1960s as a student of Ram Das before heading to India to sit with his beloved guru, Neem Karoli Baba. It was his guru who gave him his name Krishna Das and he began to chant in the Ashrams in India as his Bhakti Yoga, the yoga of devotion. After returning to USA on the advice of his guru, who told KD to ‘sing to the people’, it in fact took him 20 years to ‘sing to the people’. KD started leading chant at Jivamukti Yoga Centre NYC in 1994. Since then, he has released 15 albums and KD’s popularity has

become auspicious around the world, from yoga centres to concert halls. Probably the most regularly chanted chant by KD is the Hanuman Chalisa. He has been chanting the ‘Chalisa’ for over 45 years now, and says it is more than a chant, it captures his heart, “It’s not an easy chant, and I’m always amazed by those who commit to doing it,” says Krishna Das. “But if we are called to it, and adopt the ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ as a spiritual practice, in those moments of devotion we become like Hanuman. “We chant gently, and when we lose our place or get lost in thoughts, or in our emotions, we realise it, and use our will to come back. Again and again. We become more accustomed to being present. We come back to chanting the words. It’s hard. That’s what practice is. But it will change us.” Chanting the ‘Chalisa’ is not only like a meditation, the words themselves contain the essence or seed of consciousness within them. “Every word in the ‘Chalisa’ is Maha

Mantra (the name of God). But even beyond that, there is a joy that comes with chanting. It opens doors inside ourselves. It is medicine. We cannot comprehend it. “That’s how it gets you,” says Krishna Das. “You chant and chant, and you think nothing is happening. But then one day there is a realisation, and everything changes. Profile of an essential oil:

I

f you ever wondered which essential oil would be the ultimate secret weapon for health and anti-ageing, palmarosa would have to be it. Cymbopogon martini, known as nature’s super hero for skin health, is highly regenerating, regulating and restoring, making it an excellent addition in your skincare regime. Extracted via steam distillation from the dried grass, this sweet, floral, lemony oil is also known as Turkish geranium oil due to the high geraniol content, which makes it smell rose-like. In fact it is often used in place of rose and is used to adulterate rose oil since it carries a much lower price tag. Palmarosa helps to regulate skin moisture and sebum production making it ideal for both dry and oily skin as well as a fantastic remedy for acne and breakouts. It is an antifungal, antiviral and antiseptic and is ideal in a foot bath with

tea tree and peppermint to rejuvenate tired, aching feet. It is especially helpful for athlete’s foot and other fungal infections, as well as eczema, scarring and acne. It blends well with oils like sandalwood, geranium and rose for these skin conditions. And a few drops added to a gentle healing hydrosol like lavender water, will help wash and heal wounds effectively. Combined with oils like peppermint, ginger, fennel and oregano, palmarosa can help with digestion issues, as it helps to stimulate the secretion of digestive juices. Palmarosa appears in Ayurvedic medicine as a treatment for fungal infections and parasitic worms. It may not be well known but palmarosa features as a common flavouring ingredient in the food industry and will often appear as a common ingredient in personal care products including soap, body washes and perfume. In India, palmarosa is

used as an insect repellent around grain and beans to prevent insects from devouring the harvest. From an emotional perspective, this precious oil can help support you to feel more confident, creative, compassionate, forgiving and generous. It can also help to lessen feelings of obsessiveness, and anxiety, or when feeling deeply hurt and feeling hopeless. Palmarosa is a beautiful oil to use in a diffuser or vaporiser as a wellrounded general booster for fatigue and stress-related problems. Thanks to its wonderful calming and uplifting effects, you can add it to your diffuser with geranium and clary sage to help balance hormones and mood swings. id you know your skin is the largest organ of the body? It is a fabulous invention of creation as it does so much for us. From a medical intuitive awareness, skin has a specific ‘job’ which includes: • Protection • Breathing life • Self-acceptance • Selfimage • Guilt • Sensuality • Sensitivity I wanted to share about a client whom had a session relating to her skin. She had always experienced skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and general rashes. She also had asthma. Let’s share Cindy’s story (name is changed for confidentiality). Cindy was a very sensitive child and struggled with life. She was sensitive to harsh and abrasive surroundings, including chemicals, noises and electronic equipment. School for her was torment, as she felt exposed as though everyone could see her faults. She never felt like she fitted in or comfortable in her skin. She had no self-acceptance and her self-image was very negative. The image she saw of herself was unattractive, worthless, uneducated and useless. She didn’t accept any beautiful things about

herself but she did accept the negative perceptions of herself. She felt guilty for everything. She denied her sensuality and sexuality. With these subconscious beliefs, her skin was red, irritated, dry and in desperate need of life. Cindy’s skin was always flaky. Sometimes she would be so irritated at her own selfimage that she would scratch herself until she bled. Cindy needed to ‘see’ her real self – the beauty within and accept that she was a hologram of perfection according to quantum physics. In her dermis or true skin layer she was suffocating, and this led to asthma. Cindy noticed that each time she loved something or someone, she felt as though she was not good enough to have these people or things. She created an allergy to things she desired. Her biggest love and passion was working with dogs and yet she was so allergic to them. She did not breathe in a life of love and all the brilliance she was allowed to have and was her natural universal right to have. This all stemmed back to a memory of sensuality and her feeling the waves of life through her skin

allergy catch-22

ccording to the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, allergic diseases are among the fastest growing chronic conditions in Australia. Almost 20% of the Australian population has an allergic disease and this prevalence is increasing. Now one in three children are experiencing allergies by the age of five. Whether you suffer from respiratory problems or skin inflammation, allergies can be brought on by a variety of triggers, from pollen and dust mites to a myriad of things in your home, including certain foods, medication and fragrances. What’s in house dust and the air inside our homes? Our electronics, furniture, floor and wall coverings, personal care and home products, contain chemicals that can leach, migrate, or off-gas and end up in indoor air and settled dust. These chemicals can then be inhaled, ingested as small particles of dust or even absorbed through our skin, which can trigger allergies and other health issues.

If you suffer from allergies, it makes sense that ventilating and cleaning your home diligently is an obvious action to reduce the presence of allergens. But here’s the allergy catch-22. Using the wrong cleaning products can actually make your allergy symptoms worse. Many popular household cleaners contain dangerous toxic chemicals. Most are marked as hazardous to humans and animals, and the ingredients in many household cleaners have been linked to cancer, allergies, asthma, hormone disruption and reproductive disorders. Here are a few to avoid, there are many more: 1. Phthalates – ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ on household product labels almost always mean ‘phthalates’, a known endocrine disruptor which can considerably increase the risk of allergies in children. 2. Triclosan – common in detergents, sprays and antibacterial hand soaps. Increased use has generally

been associated with an increased incidence of allergies. 3. Ammonia – found in glass cleaners, and many jewellery cleaners is linked to allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma, bronchitis and respiratory issues. 4. 2-Butoxyethanol – found in window, kitchen and multi-purpose cleaners is linked to kidney and liver damage and associated with asthma and allergies. Here’s a few handy solutions: 1. Avoid – plug-in diffusers, airfresheners, ‘antibacterial’ products and products with ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’. 2. Research and use tools such as ‘The Chemical Maze’ App to help demystify ingredient lists. 3. Make your own cleaning products using readily available natural ingredients. 4. Choose non-toxic cleaners, microfibre cloths and essential oils with antibacterial properties from companies you trust. www.chemfreecom.com

I had to find out more. And when I did, I flew straight to Sydney to do my basic and advanced training, then flew to America to study under the doctor who invented this technique called NAET (Energy Balancing Techniques in Australia). Q: How would you describe the work you do in this field? Jane: I have now combined this work on allergies with Theta Healing, which I think is the most phenomenal modality I have ever learnt. The work I do now is so fulfilling and is what I was actually yearning for all those years ago in Broome. Jane: I have seen people heal from migraines to never having them again and they didn’t need to eliminate the offending food from their diet (usually something they enjoy). I have seen eczema clear up and they can be around the offending item that caused it in the first place. I have seen people with hayfever have plants, pollens, grasses and moulds never affect their sinuses again, and yet they are breathing the same air they were always breathing. ur health is in crisis. Lifestyle diseases, allergies, autism, anxiety and depression, are on the rise. Our children and teens are experiencing more health issues than ever before. But people are beginning to wake up. There is an uprising, a growing movement of concerned communities who are asking questions and demanding answers. Iconic nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara is the founder of ‘Changing Habits’, and the author of ground-breaking book ‘Changing Habits, Changing Lives’. She is an organic food retailer, a researcher and filmmaker, who produced the documentary ‘What’s With Wheat?’, an expose on food and agricultural practices and the catastrophic impact it’s making on our health. She is currently part way through her ‘Real Food for Health’ Tour 2018. Cyndi holds grave concerns about what is happening to our food, and what we are now putting into our bodies. Things aren’t what they used to be. She recalls, “When I went to school in the sixties and seventies, in my community and school, not one person had a peanut allergy. We had to drink milk every day at morning tea. Everyone bought bread. No one had a gluten problem. No one had a bread problem. No one was sick. No one had autism. I’d never heard of autism. Diabetes, what was that? I knew one woman with asthma… what the hell happened?” Cyndi believes it’s a multifaceted issue, a result of toxic agricultural practices, overuse of pharmaceuticals, and a reliance on food additives and preservatives rather than traditional real foods. “I can’t point my finger at one thing. Number one is agriculture. I think it’s a culmination of us using chemicals in agriculture that are destroying the gut microbiome, which is the very thing that protects our gut from us, the inside and the outside world. When the microbiome 20

is in dysbiosis (gut bacteria is out of balance) and is being destroyed, then your health is a mess. Number two is the indiscriminate use of antibiotics from the age of zero onwards, and the indiscriminate use of foods that don’t feed the gut. The foods are what they’re now calling ultra-processed foods. They’re those foods that look like food, taste like food, smell like food, but aren’t food. They’re full of additives, preservatives and flavourings. So there are three big things. I would add to that some of the medications that are being enforced on our babies, our 24-hourold babies. I’m like, it’s a crime. The whole thing is a crime against humanity because we’re seeing this increase in allergies. We just can’t look at one thing. We have to look at everything. In 1937 they were starting to do the chemical spraying. That generation was first. My grandmother would have been clean. My mother wasn’t. I’m the next generation. My kids are the generation after that. Then this new generation that’s coming, it’s really scary. They’re not a healthy lot. It’s sad what’s happening. Most of them are on drugs before they were even a month old. Whereas, my mum’s generation nobody took medications. It just wasn’t something you did. But, it’s culminating. So, we’re now on the fourth and fifth generation of chemicals.” In response to this culmination, and the immune issues and other health problems associated with it, Cyndi is seeing a need for more diet modifications than in the past. “If you asked me in the 80s, I would have said just get them off the SAD diet (Standard Australian Diet) and just put them on a new diet. That’s all we had to do. Most people would get well. Not now. If you have somebody who has a microbiome in dysbiosis, and you give them good food, sometimes they don’t get better because their microbiome isn’t digesting that food. They’re not communicating with the immune system. It might be they have an allergy to it: egg, corn, or wheat. We have soy. We have all of these foods that now people

Cyndi a r a e M ’ O have allergies to, which will heighten the immune system. We have to go, alright let’s strip it back to basics. Let’s just feed you, rather than your microbiome at the moment. Let’s just feed you so we can nourish you. Then when you get stronger, let’s start feeding that microbiome, because that microbiome might have parasites, or have an overgrowth or undergrowth of E. coli, or an undergrowth or overgrowth of staph or strep. I’m finding now we have to do more and more elaborate diets. I think that’s why the Ketogenic diet and the Paleo diet are in vogue at the moment. She spends her time listening to podcasts, reading books and articles and attending conferences both as a participant and as a speaker. “It’s always been about educating myself and then sharing that knowledge,” she says. Fundamentally, Cyndi advocates for getting back to traditional real foods. Her first book, ‘Changing Habits, Changing Lives’ has just been revised for the fourth time to reflect current research and changes in the food industry, celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year, and

has also been expanded into a program for educators, ‘The Functional Nutrition Academy’. Cyndi suggests getting started is about being educated so that you can make better choices. “Start with breakfast. Let’s get rid of the breakfast cereals, low fat milk – that stuff. Let’s get real food in. I’ve got lots of breakfast suggestions. I go through each thing. First thing is breakfast. Let’s look at the salt you’re eating. Is the salt refined? Let’s look at the sugar you’re eating. Is it refined? What’s an alternative? Let’s look at the chocolate you’re eating. Is it refined? What’s an alternative? What are your breads like? Don’t take the family away from bread but what is your bread like and what kind of bread are

you eating? What are the ingredients? And how do I read a food label? What is good about my book ‘Changing Habits, Changing Lives’ is it’s a step-by-step process. It’s let’s start here. Let’s make that part of your life,” Cyndi says. In addition to her mission as an advocate and educator, Cyndi has purchased 60 acres of farm land west of Maleny in the Australian Queensland Hinterland. “We planted 680 fruit bearing trees 18 months ago. We have animals. We have cattle that fertilise our land. Then we have chickens. We have eggs. My farm was all about a dream that I had to have food on there for my family. But, then what happens is, I always produce more than I can handle and more than my family and more than my ‘Changing Habits’ community can handle. Then I sell to everybody else. I guess that’s been the whole theme of things. I want to tell people this is what I’m doing. Do I think that I can do anything to change the planet? No. I don’t. But, I know that I can change my little corner, and then somebody else might change their little corner. Reversing reactivity:

Allergies don’t have to be lifelong

I

t’s important to understand allergies, sensitivities and intolerances as they are an inappropriate immune response to what should be a harmless substance in the environment. This can be food, pollens, a natural or synthetic chemical and/or product. The reactivity can vary widely from severe anaphylaxis to milder symptoms such as ongoing headaches, foggy head, bloating, diarrhoea, rashes and sneezing. These reactions can be mediated directly by the immune system, such as in Coeliac disease, where the reaction can be rather immediate after gluten exposure. If the reaction is non-immune mediated, it would indicate intolerances where the reaction can be slower to generate, leaving it difficult to identify. An example of this could be lactose intolerance where the individual does

not have the enzyme lactase to digest the lactose properly. So the key is how do we create immune tolerance? There are 4 main areas that have been well established in contributing to allergy and intolerances: 1. DIET – Food can be problematic. More importantly how it is produced and processed in modern times. 2. DIGESTION – Poor digestive function impacts greatly on how well the food gets broken down. The stomach acid and pancreatic enzymes are crucial in this process. If these enzymes are low, proteins won’t break down to their appropriate size and this can signal an immune response. 3. MICROBIOME – The good vs bad bugs in your gut directly interacts with 70% of your immune system. If there are alterations in this microbial balance that are not favourable, this

will negatively impact the immune cells required to maintain immune balance. 4. GASTROINTESTINAL BARRIER – A damaged or inflamed gut lining caused by improper food breakdown, a state of dysbiosis (too many bad bugs, not enough good bugs), chemicals in our food or certain medical drugs. With these key areas not addressed, the result is often an overstimulated immune system. This will continue to drive the reactivity or intolerance and cause consequent symptoms. Often through various testing we perform, we can identify problems in these key areas and address them effectively. A natural approach to

can confidently say most houses will contain mould in one way or another. Moulds are among the earliest known life-forms and are found in all parts of the world, including Antarctica. Contrary to common belief, moulds do not magically appear in buildings. They can’t penetrate through walls or other intact surfaces. They are in the air or carried into a building on clothes, foods or enter through any tiny openings and settle on a surface with ideal conditions for growth (moisture, heat and food sources). Mould is a member of the fungus family of plant-like organisms and during reproduction, mould produces spores which are minute particles carried in the air and have the potential to cause health issues including anaphylaxis in susceptible people. The most common symptom of mould in a home is fatigue not relieved by rest. Symptoms of lung involvement can include development of asthma (where previously asymptomatic),

pneumonia, breathing difficulty, recurrent chest infections and chronic cough, especially in children, whose lungs and immune systems have not yet fully developed. Mould allergy symptoms can also include: headaches and/or migraines, rashes, watery, itchy eyes, nasal blockages and sinusitis. Some moulds produce mycotoxins which in significant levels or in individuals with compromised immunity or mould allergies, can involve other systems including the eyes, skin, nervous system and digestive tract which can lead to death for some. Significant health issues for humans and animals can arise from prolonged exposure. How do we combat mould for our health and wellness in our homes? It is simple, eliminate mould before it can reproduce. The likes of bleaches and chemical sprays just bleach the colour out of the mould but do not kill it and are also detrimental to our health. So, if the mould can keep feeding, it will keep growing.

which I have personally experienced in the past. Through my chosen modality ‘ThetaHealing®’ I have experienced and witnessed many cool changes in this area. Interestingly, allergies are often more prevalent in people who have an overabundance of candida in their body. So doing some belief work to release resentments, being overly critical and anger towards oneself and/or others, can help bring balance into place. When we take a look at the belief systems that are underlining the disharmony – we could go back to when the symptoms first started and see what was going on for the person at the time. What emotions where present, what was happening in their life for them and heal it. Resolve it. There are even times when the cause of the allergy began in the womb space. But, just as with antibiotics, not everyone has the same process. Sometimes we find that, on a subconscious level, the person is ‘offended’ by pollen or cats for example. So again, we would do some belief work so that they could feel safe in their environment… but sometimes it goes even deeper still – to past lives. So in that type of situation, we would follow the process through to the past life to allow for the person to have complete resolve. I allow the Creator to guide each

session so that it is most beneficial for the client, and I teach my students the same. In this process we play the witness as the creator does the healing. It is important that we have common sense as well as openness in prevention as well as treatment. In some instances where the allergens are things that are in our natural environment, it may have been when the person was a child, they didn’t spend time playing out in the dirt or have contact with things that would have stimulated their immune system and developed antibodies to combat the allergens. This may also be the case with children who have asthma caused by allergies. It’s really important for children to learn and play in the natural world. It is important to be conscious of our choices and our decisions, to be responsible for ourselves and that also means with our thoughts and our words. We are all creating our own reality and so it is important that we are creating for our good rather than to our detriment. I have seen situations where people have unintentionally created allergies and illness into their lives, and in the past I manifested anaphylaxis in mine. In 2011 I went through what I guess you could call an ovarian cancer scare, I was placed on a three-month waiting list with the public hospital as I didn’t have private cover.

O

ver the last century there has been an exponential increase in allergic diseases like: asthma, eczema, hay fever, food allergies to name a few. I have seen this even in my life time, when as a child there used to be only one person in my class with asthma, and food allergies to nuts were unheard of. Evidence shows that an interaction with microbes that inhabit the natural environment and human microbiome plays an essential role in immune regulation. When there is an inappropriate immune response to an allergen, like a food, pollen, or dust mite, we develop symptoms like eczema, allergic rhinitis, food allergies, etc. Changes in our environment, even before we are born, can have a critical role in the development of our immune system and its response to it. Factors

like natural childbirth, breastfeeding, early exposure to different foods, outdoor activities, minimising and correct use of antibiotics, can help with a healthy gut flora and may reduce the risks of allergic diseases. The massive use of chemicals in our environment from cleaning products, chlorination of water and pesticides used in farming, can cause disruption with our microbiome. There must be a balance, with promotion of a targeted hygiene to try to maximise protection against pathogen exposure while allowing spread of essential microbes that support a healthy flora. A lot of these factors contribute to an increase in intestinal permeability or ‘leaky gut’ causing common pathologies such as allergies, irritable bowel disease, or in more severe cases like inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease.

Substances that normally don’t or slightly cross the intestinal wall can produce pathological effects. Promoting a healthy gut barrier through removing allergic foods, consuming probiotics, amino acids like glutamine found in broths, eating organic, drinking filtered water, can help. Other factors like alcohol consumption, psychological stress and prolonged intense exercise, influence the microflora and intestinal epithelium. Decreased melatonin levels found during insomnia have been associated with increased intestinal permeability too. Again, it comes back to keeping a healthy gut, trying to minimise things that aggravate our immune system, or that have a detrimental effect on our gut microbiome. hrough this poetic and profound description, we are absorbed into a world where the role and presence of the elder woman was revered, respected, and held value; where a woman was nurtured through the next stage by her elders with love, reassurance, wisdom, and encouragement to go inward, to rest deeply within, to trust her intuitive knowing. On the contrary, women today are faced with a constant focus on the outer world and the way it perceives her, and an onslaught of imagery and information telling her to be younger, look younger, and avoid the process of ageing. e are all Queens (or Kings) of our own lives, of our own beautiful, messy kingdoms. We are born that way. We don’t have to earn our crowns. They are given freely at birth in acknowledgement of our divine perfection. Each day, as we awaken, our invisible crowns are already upon our heads. They command us to show up real with the best of our abilities. Being a Queen (or King) doesn’t have room for constant composure. We have a duty to show up real, especially on the days life is messy and wild and certainly not pretty. On these challenging days, we must hold ourselves with unprecedented kindness. The kind we may never have seen or felt before. The kind of kindness that has the grace to rest anywhere. Not long ago, I caught up with a

girlfriend who had been nursing her mother through cancer. Her beautiful mother had recently passed. Even in her grief, she spoke of the beauty of death, of how truly sacred and special her mother’s passing had been. She shared that, as a society, we miss out on so much of what death has to offer. And that for her, she felt her mum had given her everything she ever needed; that through her love, she had come to a place where she deeply trusted herself as a woman, wife and mother. What a gift this woman left the world. A daughter who trusted in her own wisdom and goodness. As a mother with young children, I continually reflect on how I can live as an example to my children. It is my greatest hope that when my time comes to die, my daughters also have a deep sense of trust in their

own wisdom and goodness; that they understand I deeply trust them and their unique ways of travelling this adventure of life. I hope they know that the unique gifts they have in their hearts were planted there for a reason. No one else on the planet can share exactly what they can. And this means that sometimes they will have to walk alone. I hope they are friends with that small, still voice within and that above all, they are kind to themselves, knowing they are already enough and infinitely loved just the way they are. isolated from others and abandoned by Spirit. Maybe you are an empath, intuitive or energy sensitive, leaving you exposed to feeling others’ pains and challenges and the affects of their energies can hit you hard. It can be overwhelming at times even if one has become more energy aware and apt at dealing with these energies and recognising what is someone else’s feelings. Maybe you do not know that this is affecting you. You may not know that on top of your own disappointments, you are dealing with a whole bunch of other energies that don’t even belong to you. If you are suffering from the deeper questions in life, you could be experiencing a ‘dark night of the Soul’. Things just seem ‘dark’. You have learnt and changed so much, yet, you are still not sure where you fit, or who you are right now. You have an idea of who you were – the things you used to do, the habits you had, the people you used to hang with, but that is not you any more. You are different on the inside, but your life is slow to catch up on the outside. You know what you would like to do and who you truly are even, but you just are struggling reaching her. Things seem slow and challenging. Maybe you are really doubting yourself, and perhaps, have even lost your faith. This is when you enter the ‘dark night of the Soul’. You are letting go of all your expectations; all that you think should happen; all the limiting thoughts and feelings that you no longer need. You are literally, even somewhat painfully, shedding your old skin, and sometime in the future, you will feel clear about who you are. You may feel vulnerable right now – emotional and extra sensitive. The Divine is working with you to

unlock all of your blocks to your higher vibrating self and life. Resistance makes it more painful. However, the process will lead you to deeper relationships and closer to your Spirit’s mission than ever before; though it can be tough… and you may feel stuck. You are attempting to transcend all that is old and low vibrating within you. You have done nothing wrong. You are not being punished. It is simply time for you to let go of what you think you should know. It is time for you to transcend your karmic patterns and get on the path of your destiny. The ‘dark night of the Soul’ is love calling you into the light. Let the love within you guide you and simply just surrender to each moment. Do not push or pull anything or anyone to do or be anything right now. Focus on the space of your own heart. Breathe slowly… a lot. Write… a lot. Connect with nature and look for signs from the Divine. You will come out of this and you will understand why. I

went to a football game, Broncos vs Titans on Easter Sunday, this was the first time I had watched a game live. When I was growing up, we talked about healing, meditation, spiritual growth, those kind of things, as well as going to the beach, water slides, the drive-in and ‘normal’ stuff but there was no sport watching. My father was against any sort of violence, including that played out on a field, so this was a new experience for me. Big crowds are not my thing and I’m not sure that I’ll be rushing back, however, I will go out of my comfort zone. What did I learn? A few football rules, transport is free to these events, adults can only be trusted to drink out of plastic cups and sport seems to be an emotional outlet. People who may not know how to express their feelings or even what they are can verbalise without fear of rejection, ridicule, retaliation or having to dig deep and resolve anything. Perfect right? I think now that I’ve been,

I understand the attraction, why people have ‘teams’, it’s definitely the connection, the unity, feeling part of something, community. I feel this when attending a workshop, meditation or training opportunity with people I’m in alignment with. The interesting thing is the more I have become aligned with myself the more ease I feel around others, even if it is in a loud stadium and I have no clue what’s going on. To be able to stay centred and calm, not react emotionally takes practice, healing and staying conscious. It’s easy to slip back into old learnt habits and patterns. “When you are fully conscious, drama does not come into your life anymore”, Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now. Being part of a community, any community, brings drama, power plays, role playing and status structure – the ‘spiritual’ community included, this is where you can experience how much of the ‘emotional baggage you’ve left at the station’. Recognising your reactions is the first

new experiences step. EFT, The Emotion Code, Sound Healing or another modality may be the next rung in the ladder, knowing that most of the emotional stuff is inherited, I hope will alleviate some guilt and selfadmonishment. Tonnes of this was absorbed in the birth process, some brought from other lifetimes or karma, which by the way, I invite you to observe, not as a punishment but for the opportunity to participate in another side of an experience for soul evolution. Whatever is in the biofield (aura) is broadcast to the universe, which in turn reflects back to us. Our lives then replay these emotional experiences in different forms and circumstances for us to have the chance and choice to rebalance and harmonise the imbalances. Emotional healing from what I have noticed is the way to spiritual enlightenment, growth, expansion, however you’d like to label it. Stuck emotions keep us in the cycle of pain and fear. Rethink. M

ystical experiences have been linked to wellbeing – both in terms of everyday function and also in the remission of anxiety, depression and post traumatic stress disorder. The path to mystical experiences in the past has typically involved four options: long-term spiritual meditation; occasional incidental induction associated with psychoactive substances (such as LSD, Psylocibin, Ayahuasca and Marijuana); extremely rare events of spontaneous enlightenment; and near death experiences. There is another option available, however, which is safe, legal, accessible and has a very high rate of success – hypnotic past and between life regression sessions. A hypnosis session focussed on inducing a mystical experience through Past Life or Between Life Regression with Innovated Life is conducted over the course of a few hours with you seated in a comfortable recliner in pleasant surroundings. ave you neglected yourself a bit lately? Been too busy? Apply the scrub just before turning on the taps in the shower. Apply using a natural loofah mitt or sponge or you can use your hands. If possible, have a partner rub it onto your back or those hard to reach places.

2. Take a scoopful of the mixture into your palms or your loofah and rub it all over your body in a circular motion. For tougher areas such as the knees, soles and elbows, spend extra time scrubbing. On places like the chest, neck, and stomach where the skin is thinner, take it easy with the scrubbing mitts and/or just use your hands instead, or use a washcloth to exfoliate. If you feel the salt is too harsh on your skin, rinse off the bath mitts and then spoon only the oil that floats to the top onto the mitts to continue. 3. Once your entire body is scrubbed well, turn on the taps to warm and gently shower off. 4. Pat skin dry. Your skin should feel invigorated, cleansed and moisturised. ave you ever sprayed perfume on, or sat near someone who is wearing a strong perfume and suddenly you have a headache and feel queasy? If you researched the toxicity in perfume you would flip! The EWG found that most products that contained synthetic fragrances, such as perfumes, lotions, washes, etc contain a hormone disruptor chemical called phthalates. They are linked to many health conditions such as breast and liver cancer, reproductive malformations, diabetes and so much more. Allergy and intolerance rates appear to be rising due to the amount of chemicals we come into contact with daily. It is near impossible to escape them; from the couch to the dishwasher, personal care products, food, water… So minimising the dangerous invisible toxic chemicals is the only thing we can do. If I’m going to wear perfume, I just dab a tiny bit of pure frankincense on my clothing. This will sound like a shameful sales pitch… it’s just the truth. Pampering MUM with LOVE! WORDS JANINE HALL

et’s face it, if you ask most mums they would say they love spending time with their children, especially on days like Mother’s Day and perhaps even being taken care of for a change is something treasured and appreciated. I know this to be true for me, as my kids get older, I simply love hanging out with them! As I am both a mum and a daughter, one of the best things I like to do is to give a little something to my mum that is hand-made by me (mum really loves it). Other things I really love is creating simple ways to pamper my mum and me and I thought I’d share one of my favourite recipes that you may enjoy making for your mum. Bath bombs are a great way to not only make yourself feel amazing, they also make your skin feel gorgeous. This recipe is easy to make and most

ingredients can be found in your kitchen cupboard and takes roughly 30 minutes to create. What you will need: 1 cup of bi-carb soda ½ cup of citric acid 2 tsp of cream of tartar ½ cup of cornflour 50-80ml of water in a spray bottle Optional extras: A few drops of food dye or mica – or why not even grate a fresh beetroot and use a teaspoon of the juice to colour your bath bomb mix 1 tbsp of white or red clay Essential oil for aromatherapy Cookie cutter for moulding shapes Instructions: Place all dry ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Then spritz the dry mixture until it looks like wet sand when squeezed together. Press firmly into

your mould shape and allow to dry for 24 hours. They should be hard to press when dry. Place in a large glass jar which is air tight or wrap individually. These can be used as a foot bath or for a complete bath, depending on your needs. Put some nice relaxing music on and let mum relax. I’m sure she’ll love you even more for it! Apply some lip balm to soften the lips and you can also massage into your mum’s nails to help them feel gorgeous. I love making bath bombs so much, I have now included a complete DIY kit on my shopping cart, where all the ingredients are there for your convenience in one handy place. Profile of an essential oil:

Blue Tansy

T

here is a lot of fuss about this oil and for good reason. True Blue Tansy, also known as Moroccan Chamomile (due to its country of origin), is an exquisite essential oil known for its incredible sedative and calming qualities. It has been described as a cross between Roman and German Chamomile and its remarkable dark blue colour is due to the high percentage of the terpene, azulene present. Blue Tansy is not to be compared to the more toxic Tansy oil (Tanacetum vulgare) high in B-Thujone, which is a neuro-toxin. And despite them both belonging to the Asteraceae plant family, they have a very different chemical make-up . In fact, it is recommended that Tansy not be used at all in aromatherapy, so always ensure it is the Blue Tansy you purchase. Pure Blue Tansy can be hard to acquire and as a consequence, is often adulterated. It is important you know

who you are sourcing it from and that it has been distilled from the Blue Tansy (Tanacetum annuum) plant. This amazing refreshing essential oil is extracted each season via steam distillation from the leaves, stem and flowering tops. It has a very appealing and captivating aroma that is often described as herbaceous and apple-like. It is said to be very helpful for those who suffer with allergies and when there is a lot of hay fever and pollen about, as it can help neutralise the production of histamines. Due to its high antioxidant qualities, you can add a drop or two of Blue Tansy to your favourite natural skincare product or a cold pressed carrier oil to help soothe and clear congested skin. It has an incredible ability to reduce redness, itchiness and swelling with skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis. Blue Tansy has potent antiviral, antibacterial and anti-parasitic qualities, so using it in a bath, massage blend, spritzer or diffuser would be ideal. It is

one of the best oils to use in a foot bath for fungal infections like athlete’s foot. It also has analgesic qualities and in a massage blend would make an excellent pain reliever for sciatica, back-ache, nerve inflammation and muscle spasms. Used alongside healing oils like eucalyptus, pine and tea tree, it can help relieve many respiratory conditions such as coughs, colds, flu and asthma, especially when used in a diffuser or in a good old-fashioned inhalation with the towel over the head. Just remember like all essential oils, Blue Tansy should not be ingested or applied undiluted without advanced essential oil education or without the assistance of a qualified aromatherapy practitioner. With its chamomile-like qualities it can help relieve tension and induce a sense of calm. Dioxane – a contaminant of concern WORDS NARELLE CHENERY

A

study commissioned in 2008 by the Organic Consumers Association in the USA revealed the presence of the carcinogenic contaminant 1,4-dioxane in leading ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ shampoos, body washes, lotions and other personal care and household cleaning products. It’s now a decade later, and not much has changed! The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers 1,4-dioxane a probable human carcinogen. The cosmetic industry has been aware of the problem of the presence of the 1,4-dioxane in cosmetics since 1982, according to the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel. In 2000, 18 years later, the USFDA expressed continuing concerns about 1,4-dioxane, noting its potential to contaminate a wide range of products, its ready penetration through the skin and the evidence linking it to systemic cancer in a skin painting study. And still, there are products on the market that are

contaminated with this carcinogen! Here’s what some environmental and health regulators around the planet think about 1,4-dioxane… • 1,4-dioxane is “known to the State of California to cause cancer” and is also suspected as a kidney toxicant, neurotoxicant and respiratory toxicant, among others, according to the California Environmental Protection Agency. • According to the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services 1,4-dioxane “should be handled as a carcinogen – with extreme caution”. • US Federal regulation systems consider dioxane’s potency to be equivalent or greater than many pesticides considered to be dangerous to human health. • The US federal Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that: “The presence of 1,4-dioxane, even as a trace contaminant, is cause for concern. • When laboratory animals are

tested with 1,4-dioxane at the lowest parts per billion level – over the animal’s lifetime – they develop cancer. • The USFDA states: “Skin absorption studies demonstrated that dioxane readily penetrates animal and human skin”. • The levels of 1,4-dioxane found in many personal care products are 1000 times higher than those found to cause cancer in laboratory animals. • According to Belgian and German regulators, a massive recall of a popular line of body care products designed for children was mandated because the product “presents a chemical risk to children because it contains 1,4-dioxane”. • According to a risk calculation performed using guidelines from the State of California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, a single product containing 1,4-dioxane could lead to 970 excess cancers in one million. www.miessence.com.au

I

opened his beaten up old sports bag. Three dusty leaves, various wrappers and an American quarter fell out. There were three black crumpled cotton somethings and then an overwhelming sense of ‘hopelessness’ swept over me. That was it! I was kneeling on the ground examining the contents. “Would you like to keep the coin?” I asked, as I retrieved the one shiny object. “Na” he said. I turned my face toward the bag, paused, and I felt myself wince as reality set in. He really didn’t have anything. This was my first young person intake in a crisis homeless accommodation service and the image sticks with me still to this day. By day I work as a holistic counsellor and reiki practitioner, by night a crisis youth worker. I’m amazed to find myself in such a privileged position. By this I mean, opening the door to a complete stranger, whom –

willingly or unwillingly – hands over to me their ‘vulnerability’. In my mind’s eye this looks like a shiny globe, with a thin skin, filled with a teary liquid. It needs to be handled with care, as it could break, run or explode at any minute. Once I have proven I’m capable of holding space for wobbly parts, I have noticed the defensive persona peels away to expose an inner being, a soul. The eyes appear shinier, the body more energetic and the energy flow open. Open about all manner of things; life, school, no school, with the most surprising questions raised around spirituality and God. I guess I thought our teenagers had very little interest in the Big G and religions had lost their lustre, with the focus on families such as the Kardashians flooding the headlines. Boy, was I wrong. If given the opportunity, an inquisitive teenager

will ask any number of questions about the mysteries of life; metaphysics, paranormal and the source of all things. Often I am the only person they have ever opened up to about these subjects. Sometimes their own spiritual experiences have affected their health and well-being. I don’t judge them, I listen. They often tell me they avoid the topic with others, in-particular doctors and mental health professionals, simply because they are afraid. He finished his coffee and picked up his beaten up old sports bag. “I’ve never been able to talk like that!” he commented, thanked me and left the room. The dog who brought her owner for therapy WORDS CLAIRE OATES

T

aco was a yearold mixed breed dog who was brought for animal kinesiology by her owner Emma, although in actual fact, Taco brought her owner to me. Taco had both behavioural (emotional) and physical problems that were causing Emma some concern. Taco was showing signs of anxiety and reactivity around other dogs and would hold back from any interaction. On a physical level, she was also suffering from back spasms when stretching. In my first session I observe how the dog deals with the challenges of a new situation/environment and how they move physically. I also watch how the owner reacts. Is the owner relaxed in talking to me or do they appear anxious? The key is to assess the dog and owner as one entity. I noted that Taco was lame on her back left leg and had a shortened stride. She was unsure and anxious in the unfamiliar environment and did not engage with me at all. She avoided eye contact and appeared very distrustful. Energetically she felt very disconnected.

I also noted that Emma had an injury in her left leg and wore a leg brace for support. She was very unsure and anxious about the unfamiliar environment and was reluctant to engage with me. She was very distrustful. Energetically she was also very disconnected. The similarities between them were astonishing! Essentially, Emma and Taco were mirror images of each other and anyone could see they clearly belonged to each other. Such close similarities are commonplace in the dogs and owners that I treat and it is my job to help the owners make the connections. In this case, helping Emma acknowledge and address her own fears and self-limitations was going to change things for Taco completely. Emma explained that she was very unsure and reserved around new people and she felt anxious in new situations and environments and was frustrated at herself for being that way. She likened this to Taco around water. Taco did not want to swim, even on the hottest of days. This frustrated Emma, as she felt Taco was missing out on the joys of life by not being free or

confident enough to jump in completely. After treating both Emma and Taco using kinesiology, Emma was happy to report a complete turnaround in Taco’s behaviour. She was much more relaxed around other dogs and had finally gone swimming! Her back spasms had reduced significantly and she was no longer lame. Emma also had begun addressing her fears using Taco as her ‘emotional mirror’ and felt much more confident to take on new challenges. Putting the RAW in pet nutrition... WORDS KRISHNA EVERSON

T

here is a growing movement of pet owners who are seeking healthier nutritional options for their furry family members, and the pet food industry is beginning to respond to this. However, there are a number of concerns and shortfalls in the industry, including nutritional value, quality and bacterial contamination. Raw Feeders’ Kitchen was established in 2015 to address this, and after 18 months of research into raw and best practice manufacturing across three continents, they launched Proudi® – a complete and balanced raw diet for canines in November 2017. We caught up with James Green, co-founder of Raw Feeders’ Kitchen, to get the inside story of how they are raising the bar and setting the gold standard for quality, raw pet food products. “There are a number of vets out there who won’t touch raw. They all have similar concerns around why you don’t feed raw – legitimate complete and balanced nutrition, quality of ingredients, the risks associated with bone chunks or shards and the microbial risk of salmonella, for example – but it

appeared that no one was developing a raw product to overcome those objections,” he explains. ruly they are. My passion is to solve allergies and this could not be achieved in western or eastern medicine, so I had to search for solutions in physics. Understanding physics means you are trying to understand the universe. The universe is made up of four forces and only three of these forces have particles. Particles are the stuff or substance in the world you can feel. Our bodies are made from three biological tissues. Every illness relates to the three reflex reactions of flight, fight or foetal adrenaline responses. Every physical illness relates to one of these responses. The response is a repulsion response. Allergies are just one of these responses. Your body simply repels the allergen. The elusive fourth force with NO PARTICLE or no physical substance is consciousness i.e. our thoughts. In other words our mind… so yes, allergies are in the mind. Healing occurs when we stop repulsing the substance the allergen (the physical substance) and the negative thought (consciousness) associated with the response. The key to resolving allergies is controlling our thoughts. The problem

is most people have so many thoughts racing through their heads. Not only is the number of thoughts an issue, when a negative thought is considered, this in itself becomes an ‘allergen’. Hence a serious negative spiral begins. So often allergies spike in emotional stress periods, when we are at our lowest ebb and our thoughts are out of control. SOLUTION 1. Play the music I have created which resolves the allergy to the negative thought. 2. Transform the negative thought into a positive thought. 3. Transform the positive thought to neutral thought. 4. Play music of the physical allergens. Does it all happen in a day – no way, but you will feel better immediately, one has to create new pathways of thinking in the brain. A new habit of thinking must be created over a period of time. You will have speed bumps and the allergies will flare up. This is life. People, through their thoughts and hence their states of consciousness, create a crack in the energy matrix which is what their pets and children vibrate to.
