W

e have a ‘self-care and creativity’ feature for this month’s edition and what a joy it was to create this with an inspiring group of contributors and our amazing team (not to mention having Kim Morrison, ‘Queen of Self-Care’ on our cover). I love how we create our lives in every moment, and it doesn’t have to be with a paint brush or microphone in our hand, it can be with the seeds of inspiration and imagination that we take our next step. Self-care can mean different things to different people. It’s funny sometimes when I get a renewed sense of enthusiasm and remember the original reasons I created this magazine from scratch, it takes me on a journey where amazing things show up, that I wasn’t expecting! It’s a joy! Sometimes people ask me, are you going to take it easy and slow down a bit at the

end of the year? And yes I will definitely have some navel gazing time during November and the festive season, in fact, I love jumping in the ocean and having a go at some stand up paddle boarding in a leisurely way. At the same time, creating, exploring and experiencing is part of what makes me feel alive. This is a generative experience, it is not a ‘slugging away behind a desk for 12 hours a day, 7 days a week’ and feeling stressed, sick and run down. So I would encourage you to ask yourself, what makes you feel alive? What other ways do you nurture yourself? What is fun for you? And what if your creativity with your self-care, is a giant gift to you, your loved ones and the planet?

SUPER-DUPER COLESLAW RECIPE KATE McALOON

T

his coleslaw is packed full of nutritious veggies. The dressing is light and full of flavour and the coleslaw was the perfect side dish at Courteney Cox and David Arquette’s Sunday gatherings. You do not have to use all the veggies listed in the recipe and I’ve suggested amounts as a guideline only. Use your favourite combinations and come up with your own super-duper signature coleslaw. You can grate or julienne the veggies and cut the cabbage a fine as you like. NOTE: I usually make the salad a few hours in advance so the flavours can mingle. If you have any leftovers it’s great to add to wraps and sandwiches, or serve it with some cooked chicken or seafood for a healthy lunch or dinner choice. TIP: Try adding finely chopped red bell pepper (capsicum), a little ginger, sesame seeds and a touch of roasted sesame oil to the recipe for variety. The dressing gives a great tangy flavour to this dish and you can also use it for other salads or on steamed veggies and fish.

Serves 6-8. Makes approx. 6-8 cups. Prep time 25-30 minutes. Ingredients: 2 cups finely shredded green and/or purple cabbage 1 cup peeled and grated carrot ½ cup grated zucchini ½ cup peeled and grated broccoli stems 1 apple (1 cup) grated 1 medium spring (green) onion, chopped 3 tbsp finely chopped parsley or cilantro (coriander) ¼ cup each sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds (optional) COCONUT CITRUS DRESSING: ½ cup coconut milk ½ cup fresh orange or tangerine juice 2 tbsp fresh lemon or lime juice 2 tsp maple syrup or honey (to taste) 1 tbsp coconut aminos (optional) ½ tsp sea salt (to taste) Freshly ground pepper (to taste) 1-2 drops Young Living Culinary lemon, lime, orange, tangerine and/or lemongrass oil

Method: 1. Mix all the salad dressing ingredients together in a small bowl or blender and set aside or chill until needed. 2. Place all veggies, herbs and seeds in a large mixing bowl. Pour dressing over and gently mix to combine. Check for seasoning and add more salt, pepper and citrus juice if desired. I

attended one of Don Tolman’s free talks about nine years ago and brought most of my family along with me, which was inspiring and a revelation. We were fascinated with Don’s wisdom, passion and his self-care journey to find the keys to great health, longevity and happiness. Don’s search took him all around the globe to eventually find and create the sacred food from ancient times called ‘Pulse’. A

s an holistic doctor, I look at every aspect in life to maintain health. Self-care is essential to keep ourselves sane. But what does selfcare really mean? In health care, self-care is any necessary human regulatory function which is under individual control, deliberate and self-initiated. Some put self-care on a continuum with health care providers at the opposite end to self-care. In modern medicine, preventive medicine aligns most closely with self-care. My medical practice involves guiding my patients to make the necessary changes to their lifestyles to prevent illness. Unfortunately, a lot of people come when they are already sick, making things much more difficult to restore their body functions. This is exactly what we want to prevent. People have different preferences in life, running around with a busy schedule without realising that time flies and getting into an unhealthy routine, creates the environment to get sick. It is extremely important to have time

out and disconnect from the rat race. I personally find it essential to reconnect with nature, as this is where we come from. Recently I went on a trip to the Simpson Desert and when I told a few people, some looked at me with disbelief. Going to a really remote area is an amazing experience where there is nothingness, just sky and dirt, to recharge the batteries and get away from the monotonous daily routine. And camping by an open fire, being able to watch the stars while you are curled up in your sleeping bag, makes the trip worthwhile. MY PERSONAL SELF-CARE TIPS: • Start with clean water and real food to nourish your body and mind. Select organic, unprocessed foods; nothing in a packet or that has lots of numbers and names that you can’t pronounce. Check out one of my favourite recipes, ‘Sausages with onion gravy’ p232 from the ‘The Complete Gut Health Cookbook’ by Pete Evans and Helen Padarin. • Get in contact with nature where

you are surrounded with nothing ‘material’. Explore different areas where you have never been before, awakening the curiosity of the mind in the search of new experiences. • Take time out of your daily routine and grant yourself a holiday; it does not have to be expensive! The simpler, the more enjoyable. Cycling and hiking are my favourites! • I recently started challenging myself with new movement exercises where the co-ordination of body and mind have to engage as one to get the right results. Things like slack lining, hand stands, back bends, juggling, to name a few, turn on different areas in your brain that might not have been developing in the past. I train with Leigh Stalker at Noosa Strength Centre. • Spend time with your loved ones, family, friends and don’t forget about your best friend, ‘the dog’. aintaining proper balance of healthy gut flora is a crucial yet widely misunderstood component of human health. I’m all for personal accountability when it comes to health, but sometimes things happen outside of our control that have longterm consequences on our body. Here’s a few reasons why you’re not to blame for your tummy troubles. IT ALL STARTS AT CHILDBIRTH Your immune system undergoes major development during infancy, and two of the biggest factors influencing your microbiome are delivery and feeding methods. During natural delivery, direct contact with the mother’s vaginal and intestinal flora can help build a colony of beneficial bacteria in the gut of the newborn. Because babies delivered by C-section don’t have this direct contact, bacteria colonies instead reflect strains that can be found on the skin or in hospitals. Considering the propensity to develop certain diseases can be influenced by your immune system, the makeup of a newborn’s gut

microbiome may be more important than we realise. YOU ARE WHAT YOU DRINK Just as adults who eat probioticrich fermented foods generally have a microbiome with a wider variety of beneficial bacteria, infants that are breast-fed have a distinctly different gut flora to those that are bottle-fed. Breast milk contains a type of prebiotic that facilitates the growth of bacteria such as Bifidobacterium, which is likely why breast-fed infants have a higher level of this bacteria in their gut. Interestingly, babies who are fed a combination of breast and bottle are more likely to have a gut bacteria composition that resembles exclusively bottle-fed rather than exclusively breast-fed. THESE GENES DON’T FIT If your biological family have eaten a low-fibre diet over several generations, this can lead to the extinction of certain strains of bacteria in YOUR gut? This indicates that health problems could compound with each new generation, as this generational loss of bacterial diversity cannot be rectified with a

f I was asked to think of an individual who personifies the concept of selfcare and creativity, Kim Morrison would fit the bill. Kim is the founder of Twenty8, a natural range of skincare and organic essential oils, passionate educator and advocate for self-care, and author who has published five books and is working on her sixth, in addition to launching a unique set of inspirational aromatherapy cards this month. Kim has 12

dedicated her life to sharing the concept of self-care as a daily ritual and act of self-love. Kim embraced an holistic approach to health as a teenager. She was a competitive athlete, representing Australia in ultra-marathon running, and has always strived to be the best she could possibly be. It was during these early years of training and enduring gruelling marathons, that she would observe her thoughts were not always kind during challenging times. These have been some of her greatest teachers

and she encourages others to discover the gifts in challenges. “I’m yet to meet a person, who has not had struggles or challenges, or believed they were not good enough or worthy enough. My question is, if that is part of being human, why is it that we struggle with the struggle so much? We all know when we are in those challenging hard times, that once we can come out of the vortex, that many times we actually find the greatest lessons, even gifts.” Kim’s fascination with human

behaviour, coupled with her passion for plants, herbs and oils, has enabled her to make a difference in the lives of others, as well as leaving a lasting legacy for her family and loved ones. Kim has been an aromatherapist for 26 years, but this interest began at a very young age. “My love of plants has been there since I was a young girl. It began with my grandmothers actually, one was a gardener, and had green fingers. And my other grandmother was a baker and a lover of food. I was very lucky to have grandparents that taught me the power of food and the power of nature.” Armed with this knowledge, and inspired every day by the people around her, as well as her own family, Kim writes, speaks and teaches the art of selflove. “We are all told that in order to love others, we must first love ourselves. But no one seems to give us the magic formula on how to do that. And whilst it is easy when life is going great, it seems particularly difficult to love yourself when you are going through a challenging time. In fact, it is usually during these times, we tend to fall completely out of love with ourselves. “What I’ve found is that it is all about the ebb and flow. Trusting it is all a process, one moment, one breath, one day at a time.” On investigating the ‘how’ Kim has found the first step back to self-love, back to that core, is actually awareness of being in that self-sabotaging space, or that we are in that place of darkness, whatever that dark space looks like. This can be grief, loss, guilt, or it can be detrimental bad words about ourselves, shame, hurt, anger, resentment or fear. When you are aware that you are in that space, what you can focus on is self-care, which can be in any form. It can be a two second ritual, like spritzing with an essential oil spray; it can be putting bare feet on the sand or the grass; it can be reading an affirmation; and it doesn’t have to take a lot of time or money. It is being mindful of doing something nice. Kim believes that given the right circumstances, anything is possible for the human spirit, and it’s not about quick fixes or New Year promises that are easily broken. “I think it’s more about a continual evolvement and a realisation we are all trying to do the best we can, we just need some tools to support us and help keep us on the self-love track.” Kim has found that through writing

books, and creating new ways of sharing her message of self-care, it allows her to practise what she preaches on a daily basis. “I’m very open with my team, my family and my friends. I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve. I realise sometimes I get it completely right and sometimes I can get it quite wrong. There are times I’m on a pedestal for many and for some there are times I completely fall off. There are moments when I feel like the ocean and there are moments when I feel more like I’m drowning in it. Some days I look out and wonder why I do what I do and there are days I receive a message and know exactly why I do what I do. Some days I love myself to bits, and some days I wonder if I’ll ever be enough. “I often work really hard and then wonder though if it’s really smart. Sometimes there are mistakes and wrong choices, but thankfully there are times of joy and no looking back. I have come to understand some will talk about me in ways that do not serve me, and I have to appreciate those that do, have not walked in my shoes or carry what I do. Sadly, even unknowingly, there is criticism and judgment, and when I hear it I am shocked and feel so much hurt and go into that dark place. I have to take care of myself and remember that thankfully there are sweet surprises, kind hearts and unbelievable love and loyalty too. “I realise some see me as a fearless leader and others see flaws and fears. Some will say I’m too open and share way too much, others see those sharings and as open-hearted vulnerabilities and strengths. I angst at all the suffering in the world and I marvel in all the magic it possesses too. I have come to learn that even though my number one driver may be kindness and care, some people will never share that same drive and neither will they care. “As an entrepreneur, I may feel I have the best products, the most amazing education and beautiful business in the world yet no matter what I have, how much I give and all that I share, many will never see it in the same light, or fully appreciate how much it means to be supported when you’re a small business. “There are days that as a woman I feel beautiful, sexy, intelligent, aware, spiritual and on fire, and then suddenly there are moments I am reduced to the likeliness of a red-faced toddler throwing a tantrum. As a mum, I can feel incredible and love it with my absolute

heart, life and soul and yet within seconds, I can feel a complete failure and the most useless mother and human being on the planet. “As I navigate my path in this thing called life with a desire to give as much as I can and with an intent to give it my best, I realise that for some, it will never be enough. And there are some days I wonder if it is just me? Or do others happen to feel this way too? I am learning the importance of celebrating the wins, the milestones, the fun. I am also learning in times of challenge and struggle to not ask, ‘What have I done wrong?’ But instead ask, ‘What is the learning, what is the lesson here?’” Wouldn’t it be grand if we could just be, do and give our best, take a breath and be proud of who we are in the moment? Kim often believes it is important to celebrate the perfect imperfections. Maybe learn to trust it is all as it should be. Tuning into what

FEELS RIGHT for ME

Do as I do, not as I say’! When it comes to self-care these should be the words adults practise in their life when looking after and empowering children. Children learn best and accurately when they watch their parents, teachers and carers. They mimic our actions. Between the ages of 0-7 years is imprint age, which means children will have our imprint of how we behave and look after ourselves. Between 7-14 years children will mimic us in self-care. Ages 14-21 children may do everything that is socially unacceptable in self-care but that is part of their lessons in becoming themselves. And for the rest of their lives they have an abundance of opportunities to learn what self-care is to them. As this journey is so individualised. My profound learning of self-care was how to NOT care for myself. Having grown up in a mentally, emotionally, verbally and physically abusive environment, I learnt how to suppress emotions, how to not speak up, how to eat bad foods, how to not look after my body. I felt worthless and thought selfcare was about survival of the fittest. The

memory that sticks in my mind is how my Mum died at 43 years old, as she did not care for herself. This was a harsh lesson at age 16 for me to experience. This became my foundation until my mid-twenties, where I became suicidal and was blessed to be gifted the awareness of self-development books, courses, and caring people. I unlearnt what I ‘knew’ and tried many systems, techniques and ‘things’ for self-care. Some worked, some didn’t. I needed to know what self-care was for me – how did it feel, what did it look like, what were the outcomes, was it okay to do this. I have learnt self-care is of the mind, body and spirit. It is boundary setting, it is saying YES to all opportunities and deciding later if I want to pursue it. It is being able to say no without feeling guilty. It’s allowing myself to STOP and do nothing. It’s goal setting. It’s listening to my intuition. It’s nurturing my body with great food. It’s exercising – that makes me feel fabulous. It’s walks along the beach with my dog, Zac. It is having fun. It’s giving no reasons, excuses,

explanations to anyone. It’s loving me… the whole of me, no matter what. Today I ask you to be the example of what is possible for your children that are in your life. You are worth it. ctually, it does! And flossed! It’s part of how bodies enjoy being nurtured! So what about seeing the dentist? Actually, your body enjoys getting a good clean and polish up! The road to being

BLISSFULLY AWARE

F

ully honouring the path of the soul takes faith! Trusting the universe is a challenge, there are no guarantees, you’ve heard all the cliches, said them, and probably repeated them as affirmations but have you stopped, truly stopped all the internal and external noise, doubts and fears to feel it? I’m not talking about for a few seconds or minutes or a fleeting thought through your mind as something unattainable but acknowledging and creating your path is having the faith to live it. If this is difficult, know you are not alone, the planet is full of people existing in fear, going through the motions every day, not so blissfully unaware. Healing is continual, you may have big a-ha moments and lots of little ones in between. I have had enormous amounts of pain balance in a treatment but the one thing that changed so much for me was trusting myself. From childhood, I have been a healer, however, my self-esteem wasn’t

so great. All the times I had been right about people, events and situations, still wasn’t enough confirmation for me; in treatments I still held back information channelled to me, for fear of being wrong. Yes that’s right, I was making it about me not the client. From the moment I chose to trust myself and to trust the universe was not having a laugh, everything changed. I now express every word, image, taste, smell or feeling I am given. I am fulfilling my purpose of healing, supporting and assisting others and there is a sense of balance I had not felt before. Finding your path is not hard, you are already on it! If you are discontented with the direction, reflect on the weave of your life, you will see your purpose; like the sun reflecting on the water it will catch your attention. Work towards bringing more of that balance into your life, slowly is good! If you can’t chuck in your current job, honour it as providing, while you make changes. Weed out the people you need

to and if they’re family, remember we learn the most from them. All experiences you have are part of your learning, nothing is wasted. In times of challenge and difficulty, you learn to discover and live who you are not and who you have been told you are by family or society. Knowing what you don’t want, can produce an epiphany or slowly bring soul awareness. Be gentle with yourself, treat yourself with the kindness you would give to those closest to you. Follow yourself, not a guru, listen to what resonates, bring it into your life, value yourself and others for where they are. You, my friend are loved and supported by the universe. I would like to express my deepest respect for anyone reading this that has experienced and is still living with deep trauma; healing is a process that needs to be acknowledged as individual, not as a quick fix, nor judged by others. www.amandamackay.com.au

I

n spring of 2008, I had the worst case of writer’s block. All my creative juices had run dry. My mind felt like a desert without a speck of fertile soil. “That’s no good! discouraged and frustrated. I had been defeated by my own mind. At this rate, it would be impossible to submit my songs to the record label that had just signed me. It was over. My dream had died. Until… I inquired within, “Wait, if I’m the one who just stopped my creative process dead in its tracks, then I’m also the one who can get this train moving again! How did this happen? I was moving right along in my brilliant creative process, then got hit by the train I was conducting!” I realised… The #1 killer of creativity is judgment! I created this process for myself that now allows me to get out of my own way and flow with endless creativity. H

ow can we prevent the storm before the disaster arises? Without even realising, we can have the tendency to treat our material possessions with more care than our own body. We book our car in for regular services to prevent damage, we set up smoke alarms to warn us of any potential danger, but yet we ignore internal pain; the body’s smoke alarm, alerting us that our own physical shell, our body, is in fact, in danger. How different could our body feel if we had strategies in place to regularly care for it and prevent potential damage? So, how can we service our body? I am sure you all know the basics: regular exercise aims to assist joint mobility; increase oxygen to the tissues; decrease tension and so forth. It’s a must. Regular daily movement-based exercise should be an absolute priority. Additionally, adequate hydration, a wholesome diet, regular stretches and

a meditation practice, are all amazing for the body. But I believe there is one key aspect that is often missed or overlooked. I have countless initial consultations with patients who are in severe, acute pain, that are generally otherwise seemingly healthy patients. They eat well, exercise 3-4 times a week, have healthy relationships and yet they still end up injured or sick. Why? Because, they didn’t book in for a 10,000km service on the most important vehicle of all: their body. Booking in for a regular check-up with an osteopath or your health care practitioner could resolve dysfunction before it even makes itself known to you. Yes, the car may sound okay, it might even feel smooth to drive, but we still take it for a service to have an expert opinion every 10,000km or every 6 months or so. So why do we not do the same for our own body?

The human body has an innate intelligence. Your body will strive to prevent pain as much as it can. Often your body will give you little ‘warning signs’ when it is reaching its limit. Perhaps you wake up with a morning niggle or a twinge here or there and then suddenly a few days later, you bend over to pick up a pen and cannot get back up. Sound familiar? Unfortunately, this is seen very frequently in practice. Things like the niggles, morning stiffness, the end of the day backache; these are the warning signs. This is the beeping of the smoke alarm, reminding you to check in with your health practitioner. BEAT THE BLUES WORDS DR DAIN HEER

epression. Anxiety. Suicide. Open the newspaper, look online, talk to the people you know. These things are on the rise. You don’t have to go far to find someone who struggles with thoughts and feelings of despair, overwhelm and exhaustion. Or maybe you are one of them? I know. I was one of them. For a long time, every day I woke up with so much sadness and depression that I didn’t know how to make it through the day. Seventeen years ago it was so severe that I wanted to kill myself. I even set the day. Today, here I am, with a love and lust for living. I wake up every morning so grateful to be alive. My life is an adventure and every day keeps getting even better. Here are three things I started to do that changed everything: 1. START EVERY DAY WITH ASKING QUESTIONS The next time you wake up with thoughts of depression, rather than spiralling down into those all-toofamiliar feelings, ask a question. Asking

questions can empower you to change anything. Here are some questions you can ask: • Universe, will you please show me something beautiful today? • What else is possible here that I’ve never considered? One of the problems with depression and sadness is that we don’t see any other options. When you ask a question, you open the door to new possibilities opening up that you couldn’t see before. 2. STOP TRYING TO FIX YOU When you feel down, when you can’t seem to find that happy feeling no matter how hard you try, often times you decide that there is something wrong with you and you start desperately seeking to fix it. What if there’s nothing wrong with you? We spend so much time judging ourselves and our bodies and we are so used to believing that we are wrong! Would you be willing to let that go? Would you be willing to consider that you’re not nearly as messed up as

you’ve decided you are? Try asking this question every day, “What’s right about me that I’m not getting?” I wonder how much lighter you would feel if you weren’t in constant judgment of you? 3. DON’T TAKE ON OTHER PEOPLE’S STUFF The thing that changed my life dramatically from wanting to die to living happily is a little question I heard, “Who does this belong to?” We are all very aware of the people around us. If we have people around us that are depressed, we often feel depressed and think that we are, when we are just aware of others. Please know, regardless of how difficult things seem, something else is possible. You can beat the blues. You can wake up in the morning happy. What has TRUST got to do with SELF-CARE? WORDS KATE M FOSTER

I

’ve spent the past month travelling the USA and Canada with my family, promoting my new book and learning from remarkable teachers including: Brene Brown, Pema Chodron and Adyashanti. Fierce and unwavering dedication to learning, healing and growth is required to serve others, and while I teach, any mastery I embody is that of a willing student. I have a commitment to not shy away from my fears or medicate myself with falsities, well aware that a fabricated sense of ‘knowing’ can close my heart and limit my ability to bless others. For a decade I’ve dreamt of attending teachings with one of the most influential women in my world, Pema Chodron. Now in her 81st year, she devotes her time to silence, retreating for 12 months at a time, emerging to briefly

teach before retreating once again. Receiving last minute places in her USA retreat (after waitlisting three years in a row) was a miracle to me. Meeting her and introducing her to my family was a blessing beyond comprehension. In sharing with this remarkable woman, what impacted me most was her humanness. While listening, I realised she had not blessed millions of humans by being fancy or ‘shiny spiritual’, but rather by showing up real, being kind (to herself and others) and sincerely telling the truth. This, married with her fierce commitment to learning, changes lives. (And truthfully is within reach for each of us.) Being in Brene’s presence was much the same. I got a palpable sense that she was simply another human like you and I, showing up brave, real and strong in service of others. She

asks hard questions and waits for life to answer them. What stands out is that these two women share a strong approach to self-care. How could they ever truly serve the world if they didn’t? I used to believe self-care could begin when I finally completed all the tasks on my spiritual, emotional and physical to do list. That a time would come when life would finally be on track and I could prioritise me. Now, what I clearly understand is this moment is all I have. Trusting life and this beautiful mess, my only option. And how I treat myself when I am alone, that’s the true measure of my success. Remembering the

GIFT OF ‘HOLDING SPACE’ WORDS RAELENE BYRNE

N

ovember is usually a month of tying up loose ends, completing unfinished things as we head towards the end of the year. We have been called to be courageous in 2017, to recognise who we are NOT, so we can move confidently towards who we are becoming. In the remembering process, emotions can be at surface level, thinking can be scattered, and thoughts can include: What is the point? Am I really wanting to keep doing/living this way of life? What else is there for me? What is the purpose of all of this? Am I really on track? These are all questions that signal an internal message of change or growth. Things become a bit uncomfortable as what needs to be cleared to grow, will come bubbling to the surface. Most of us will deal with what arises in the way we have always dealt with issues: we can worry, overthink, start to ‘sink’ or feel like we

are drowning… we may come to an abrupt stop and then stagnation sets in. We will turn to self-care to nurture ourselves through these ‘growing pains’, and yes we have loads of choices at our disposal to achieve this. There is another skill that is deeply supportive and it requires you to trust in yourself and another person. It is the powerful action of ‘holding space’. Support is also an act of self-care. Many of us have conditions around being supported. Perhaps we can support others easily, yet, are resistant to receiving support when we need it most. This is where holding space becomes a tool, a gift, an act of love. Having a person you discern to be strong enough to hold you in a place of truth, honesty, non-judgment, acceptance, while you ‘spill’ everything out around an issue that is needing a loving resolution, is not only profound, it is necessary. When we speak things out loud, the thread of what is on the surface

unravels, bringing up from the depths of your inner world, the triggers, the scenarios, the patterns and finally the answer, which has always been there. Relief embraces you as you feel yourself bring the truth, which has been buried, into this moment of awareness, and you know what to do with certainty to move forward, to change the situation within self. Everything we need to know, we already have within. Holding space for others and being held, is sitting in reverence with sacred connection, hearts pulsing, with a common understanding that you are more than what is happening in your life right now. You have the answer for your own soul growth. Interview with Kate Reardon

Multi-level HEALING and ADVENTURES IN BALI Vanessa: What originally inspired you to want to facilitate other people’s healing journeys and can you share a bit about your own healing; the challenges and what has assisted you? Kate: My personal healing journey began when I was 15 years old. I was diagnosed with aggressive glandular fever, Ross River fever (a nasty virus

caught by pesky little mosquitoes) and had my appendix rupture as they were taking it out of me during surgery. My immune system was completely shattered, I was experiencing an extreme amount of pain and completely exhausted. This was the first time in my life that modern medicine could not help me. There was absolutely nothing any

of the doctors could do to help me get ‘well’. They told my parents to take me home, let me rest, give me strong pain medication and feed me ice-cream and then eventually I would come around to my usual self. In hindsight, ice-cream was the worst thing I could have possibly had at the time thanks to an already existent dairy allergy and the fact that its high sugar content would contribute to the depletion of my already compromised immune system. After two months in bed, I had made very little improvement. I still didn’t have enough energy to stand up in the shower, go back to school or stay awake for more than a couple of hours at a time. These were not fun times in my teenage years, I can guarantee you that! Mum was desperate to get me well and healthy again and decided to take me to see a homeopath. This was my first experience with alternative and holistic health care and actually now looking back, a hugely pivotal point in my life. I liked this woman instantly. She was asking me questions that I actually had to think about. She wanted to know all about me, who I was, beyond my signs and symptoms of my body, by delving deeply

into the cause of why I ended up getting so sick in the first place. She explained ‘life force’ and told me that this inner vital energy was low within me and I needed to help it thrive by exploring the emotional and spiritual sides of myself. I was 15 and ‘self discovery’ of this depth was not on my radar at all. Yet amongst this overloaded influx of new words, concepts and ideas she presented, I knew she was right. Something deep inside of me awakened and I knew what she was telling me was going to help me get healthy again. After I had integrated the advice of this homeopath and connected back into my heart through meditation and inner self-exploration, I discovered something very powerful within myself that would change the course of my life forever. I discovered my sixth sense was very strong, my intuition crystal clear, and I could see, feel and know things that no one else could. I had opened up a part of myself that needed revealing and through that, enormous healing occurred for me on many levels. My physical body recovered quickly, my energy started to increase and I felt stronger than I ever had before. I discovered that I had the power to change the state of my mind and body and that my ‘life force’ was a precious presence within me that I must nourish and nurture always.

This seed was planted within me and I knew it was my life’s purpose to help facilitate healing, transformation and change within other people. So with extensive tertiary studies in both complementary and mind body medicine, I set out on a global search of finding the most dynamic way of helping people achieve radical healing and transformation. This adventure took me all over the world and eventually to Bali where I co-founded Natural Instinct Healing with my husband Pat. Vanessa: What called you to Bali and what has this experience been like over the last seven years? Kate: I don’t really know what called me to Bali other than the absolute knowing that I was meant to be there. It was not a specific thing per se that I was attracted to, it was more a feeling within my heart and a ‘calling’ to take on a huge adventure both personally and professionally. I had no idea what I was doing initially but our dream was to always have a healing space where people from all over the world could come together and rest, restore and realign their bodies, minds and spirits. My intention and vision was crystal clear and out-weighed any fear or resistance I had in making it happen. And because it was a co-creation project with my husband Pat, we jumped in head first and gave it a red hot go and then all

the magic unfolded from there. It is a constant challenge working in Bali and running an international ‘heart-based’ business, but the most thrilling adventure I have ever been on. The level of growth I have undergone since coming to Bali is enormous and our retreat programs have served over a thousand people now from all walks of life. I could never in a million years imagine we would be where we are, it has been a tsunami of blood, sweat and tears, but knowing that you are helping support people in their own healing and transforming journeys, well, there is no greater honour! used to feel annoyed when people would say, “Oh, your creative energy is connected to your sexual energy.” It’s just that your second chakra is stuck – oh please! Until… I experienced it for myself. See, I am a bit of a sceptic. Until I experience something for myself, I don’t really believe. However – energy is energy – there’s no one separate energy for this and one energy for that – it’s all one. Creativity comes through in all ways – being pregnant is a creative process, mothering, fathering, working, cooking a beautiful meal can be creative, arranging some flowers in your house, designing a building or a garden is creative. What I have experienced though, is a direct connection between how I made love to how creative I became in my life. Making love, where the energy is always expressed outwards, has a very different effect on the psyche

and body than if you, through your awareness; retain that energy – at least for some time. That’s where slow conscious sex comes to the fore. 1. TAKE TOTAL RESPONSIBILITY When something does find you, it is from a past choice of ‘yours’, conscious or unconscious. It is not the outside experience causing the conundrum, it is the outside experience giving you an opportunity to make a different choice. In these times, usually we avoid the actual different choices that are available to us – the ones that will set us free, grow us, move us forward well and give different results. Because at the time, they seem hard, impossible, and take us way out of our comfort zones. 2. CONNECT WITH YOUR BODY’S CONSCIOUSNESS It will connect you to your subconscious, higher self, future self, the entire universe etc. Say out loud something like this, “Body, show me today clearly what my lightest choice forward is here.” 3. ACKNOWLEDGE THAT ALL CHOICES WILL WORK OUT FOR YOU AND ARE VALID This step is very, very important.

When you do this, you invite all possibilities in. You override your ‘ego’ that will do its best to keep you ‘safe’, in blame and a victim. It will try and tell you one choice is better than the other; keep reminding you bad things will happen if you choose what your intuition may be saying, or something different or new. Your emotional body will become more intense and your mind will start to go to extremes with negative stories the further you step out of your comfort zone. Your ego will keep you in what is ‘known’ and what you have done before – regardless of outcome! Different and new choices will create different and new results. 4. PAY ATTENTION TO THE ‘SIGNS’ Not the signs from your emotional body or negative stories. These signs are in your environment – in many places. When you come from a space of “all choices will work out for me”, your body’s consciousness will give you many, many signs throughout your day for a choice that will ‘feel light’. It will

float to the top of all the choices and you will be able to ‘perceive’ it. Pay attention to everything that shows up this day. 5. TRUST YOURSELF AND WHAT YOUR BODY’S CONSCIOUSNESS SHOWED YOU This is the easy part – ‘seeing’ your choice in your environment. We are so supported, only always in all ways. If you are willing, brave and open, you will see it clearly. It’s our wobbly emotional bodies and negative stories that can take over this natural process of feeling and trusting your gut. A knowing will drop in when you see the ‘signs’ that are your direction. This knowing will fuel your momentum to take action. The bigger the conundrum, the more ‘unsafe’ your choice’s outcome may feel. However, unless we choose something different, the same situation will find us again. et’s face it, life is busy and when you are not busy, it’s probably an 8 out of 10 (ok 9.95 out of 10) chance that your mind is busy. ‌kids, food shopping, study, Aunt Jane, someone needs new socks, rain is coming, walls need painting, an earthquake in New Zealand, season finals, pretty flowers, oh look shiny thing, GOAT!!! It’s common to keep so busy, so that you avoid one of the most crucial aspects in your life‌YOU!!! Then it starts‌ realisations of life – your life, and then there’s that abominable thought. “How did I get here?â€? The moment that creates deafening silence. Followed by, “What about me? It isn’t fair‌â€? As sad as it seems, most of us have been there at some point or another. So as it goes, we pull up our big girl panties (or pull on those man boots) and declare that “things have got to

change, and they are changing NOW!â€? Which sounds really great, feeling empowered, you go book yourself in for that massage you have wanted for weeks (ok months‌ hmm righto years) and then try that new restaurant everyone has been raving about and then you realise you are wearing the same outfit you were wearing in 1998‌ time for a new one. Discovering new aspects of yourself you feel relaxed and joyful. Then on the way home you encounter those old thoughts, feelings and beliefs‌ “Sammy needs new runnersâ€?, “we actually could have put that money towards car payments or at least into savings for a family holidayâ€?‌ “who am I to take from my family?â€?‌ Oh the guilt!!! A lot of those situations stem from historical beliefs. Beliefs which are deep in your subconscious of not being good enough nor worthy, obligations to put everyone else first; not knowing how to live without being deprived‌ etc.

This in no way means that you have to resort to missing out, it is actually a wonderful opportunity to grow from. And to initiate a deeper level of self-care and understanding. As you begin to understand yourself on deeper levels, you can upgrade your belief systems from what is no longer working for you and transform your life and yourself into that which you desire. You are important, you have value, you are here for great reasons. So that call you made that things are to change now‌ make it a real one. Invest in yourself in a way which is going to keep on giving to you, that will become expansive. It may take some dedication to yourself in time and money. But the improved outcome you experience, which on-flows to your family, is beyond worth it. T

he four nations have been separated too long. The four tribes that birthed us all, are now too often divided and harming each other. Why? By our judgment: colour, religion, gender, income, appearance, locality, horoscope and many more… all are aspects of life that are truly external to our spirit. We share the same emotions, love, hatred and anger. We all cry and have sadness. We are all the same physical bodies, we all have the same coloured blood, we all originate from the same energy source. We are all on the same planet. Initially classified by where we are born and to which family, from there the judgments flow as we learn what is deemed appropriate in our personal environment. Our inner self, our spirit, does not acknowledge this divided imposed realm.

What is the solution? When all the externals are set aside, spirit can choose wisely. And spirit knows truth. Each judgment is a key to greater connection, rather than division. All aspects of an individual’s chosen human experience are important to that spirit’s journey. When you release yourself from the restrictions that have been placed and programmed into your conscious mind, you are free to choose how and where you should live, who should be your friends and partner in life, how you should work and provide for yourself, and much more. Those who cannot shift, will still place judgment upon you. If you have broken free you won’t react… you’ll be free from judgment. Free to be yourself. n average, we spend 90% of our time indoors, which includes homes, offices, restaurants and vehicles. The evolution of our modern world has insulated us from outdoor environmental stimuli and regular contact with nature. What is the impact of spending only 10% of our lives outside? When we are bombarded with information, we often find ourselves needing a walk outdoors to ‘clear our head’. Scientists have established that being in nature has a profound impact on our brains and our behaviour. It helps us to reduce anxiety and stress, and increases our attention span, creativity and our ability to connect with other people. It can even make us more caring and generous. Studies identified that those more immersed in natural settings are more generous, whereas those immersed in non-natural settings are less giving. Participants exposed to nature, value intrinsic goals more and extrinsic goals less than they had before exposure.

n April this year, ministers responsible for food regulation considered Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ)’s approval of a proposal to permit the sale of low-THC hemp seed foods. This means the Food Standards Code has been amended to permit the sale of low THC hemp seed foods. However the changes will not come into effect until November 12th, 2017. Hemp or industrial hemp is a cannabis plant species (Cannabis sativa). Historically, hemp has been used as a source of fibre and oil. Hemp seeds and oil are used in other countries, including in Europe, Canada and the United States of America, in a range of foods. Hemp seeds contain protein, vitamins, minerals and polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly omega-3 fatty acids. Hemp is different to other varieties of C. sativa which

are commonly referred to as marijuana as it contains no, or very low levels of THC (delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol), the cannabinoid associated with the psychoactive properties of marijuana. Hemp is cultivated worldwide, including in Australia and New Zealand (under strict licensing arrangements) and is currently used in Australia and New Zealand as a source of fibre for clothing and building products. “I don’t have to

DO THAT ANYMORE”

C

ould it be this simple to heal your body? I believe we carry invisible triggers in our body as cellular memory and they create blockages / pain / discomfort / disease. A massage I had in 2010 showed me a new way to heal. I had been on a boat in rough seas and fallen on my hip against the hand rail whilst taking a photo. My legs were very sore and the masseuse could feel the knots. She said “So what does that mean, Julie?” I have meanings for different parts of the body. “Being on the right side means I am afraid to step into my purpose and something that has happened in the past two years is holding me back.” As she massaged my right leg, I filtered through my mind and remembered what it was. “You know what – I don’t have to do that anymore.” Snap – the knot went soft. She moved up my leg and asked, “What’s that?” touching my knee.

“What I am seeing is a right angle turn. The knee is about hinges. It’s about flexibility. Instead of a fork in the road, I see a right angle turn.” She said, “What did you do?” “I went on the right angle road.” She said, “It released (snap) just like that.” “I don’t have to do that pathway anymore.” We went right through my body and I identified with all the things I was doing which were related to the invisible triggers. I simply said, “I don’t need to do that anymore”, and they dissolved. This was extraordinary! It was really deep work and the therapist didn’t have to know the content – I knew – and all I had to say was, “I don’t need to do that anymore”. Sometime later while attending a pilates class, I felt as though I had been badly punched in the back. I checked in with self and asked – what does the back represent? The weight of the

A

s a Clinical Psychologist, I am privileged to work with some of the most beautiful, loving, caring, generous and giving individuals you will ever meet, yet all present with a combination of anxiety, depression, stress, burnout with health issues. Caring for others is a selfless act of loving-kindness and most of my clients are caring experts, they care for others brilliantly, automatically, often without expectation, appreciation or reciprocation. It is ‘over caring for others’, entwined with the belief that pleasing or meeting the needs of others is more important than one’s own needs, that is the reason why many kind, loving individuals end up in my office, usually totally overwhelmed with a psychological diagnosis. Many Holistic Bliss readers will resonate greatly with the attributes of a ‘caring’ personality. Nurturing others is a natural and deeply ingrained part of the maternal role. Pleasing and giving to others is not only an internally rewarding act of loving kindness, but also a highly esteemed personal attribute, offering external rewards and social recognition. When you love someone very much, it is all too easy to care and give too much, a habit that eventually affects our mental and physical health. Self-sacrifice and

subjugation of our own emotional needs tops the list of cognitive beliefs of those suffering from chronic burnout. It feels good to help others, but as the demands of living in this modern world have multiplied, it is essential that we also nurture, care and help ourselves. It is the art of balancing giving to others with caring for ourselves, that is key to staying healthy. This can be a challenging task. Most caring individuals are highly compassionate, sensitive, intuitive and empathic. Many can sense the emotions of others, even feel the distress of others in their own body and for such individuals they are highly susceptible to psychological, emotional and physiological burnout and illness. The science examining the mindbody connection is indisputable, caring for others without adequately caring for ourselves, is causal in chronic illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, cancer and other lifestyle diseases. Selfcare is non-negotiable, if we want to feel good, be the best parent, partner, employee, employer, live well and avoid being struck down by a nasty disease; we simply have to do the work. We have to take good care of ourselves; our own ‘temple’ that is our mind, body and soul. Self-care is a reflection of self-respect and it is the best life insurance policy we

can ever invest in. Yet putting ‘the self first’ does not come easily or naturally to many of us. In Western society, putting our own needs first, is often frowned upon and many of us have a fear of being seen as selfish. Putting our ‘self first’ is not an act of selfishness; on the contrary, it is an intelligent conscientious decision to love and respect the greatest asset we will ever have – our body! Self-care is a ‘mindset’, a way of thinking and doing that requires conscious intention, commitment, rehearsal and practise. We owe it to ourselves, to our mind, body and soul, to put our ‘self first’, to take time to nurture ourselves, to develop a daily practice of meditation, activity, reflection, healthy eating and quality sleep. It takes three months to build a new mindset and a new set of habits. It might not be easy… but it will be worth it. here is nothing outside of yourself. Every time you feel happy it is coming from you. Every time you feel sad, it is coming from you. Nothing exists outside of yourself. Everything that comes into your existence you are creating. You create everything that happens to you… from the grumpy checkout girl, to winning first division in Lotto, to creating your illness. Did I just say you create your own illness? Yes. And as easily as you created it, you can ‘uncreate’ it. I have been clearing people’s allergies/illnesses for 10 years now and have seen people who clear very easily and have seen people who have been to so many different healers, naturopaths, doctors, and can get no relief from their illness. Why is that? One reason is subconsciously their illness is serving them in some way. Usually they do not know how it could possibly be serving them. But here is an example of how an illness can serve you. This may be expressed as, wanting love or attention but not receiving it. So your subconscious knows it cannot change anyone else, all it has to work with is you. So if you create an illness and someone has to look after you, all of a sudden you are getting what you want. Q: I am often told I am sensitive, can you please suggest ways I can clear and protect my energy? – Jill, Kawana, Qld. Linda: Hi Jill, being sensitive is a wonderful thing. That means you’re connected to all that there is. Working with spirit regarding protection is like a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it gets. So start with asking spirit to surround you with white light everyday. At the end of a conversation say, “I give back to you Jill that is yours with love and light, and I take back from you that is mine with love and light.” So we make sure the energy is back where it belongs. Visualise roots coming up through the earth wrapping themselves around your feet and anchoring you to mother earth. The more you work with spirit/source, the stronger the connection is. Practising the on/off button helps. Open to spirit – have boundaries when working spiritually, then have a closing ritual. It’s about balancing mind, body and soul. Bring your energy back to you instead of having your expanded, evolved vibration out in other people’s energies. There are many different ways to look after yourself as a sensitive person. t’s strange how we refer to people as the creative arty type and we often don’t consider that we all have a creative core. My belief about myself used to be, “I am not creative!” Until I realised combining my love for flowers and plants and the old art of

Hawaiian lei making was right up my alley! No one can ever make an ugly lei! They are incredible! Grab a blanket, a bunch of cushions and throw a bunch of greenery and flowers in the middle. Nothing is so therapeutic as making a beautiful head crown. I recently booked my friend Leiona for my daughter’s birthday party to come and teach the girls the art of lei making. They are all still talking about it months later. Leiona is a human that feels like sunshine. You know one of those people that instantly make you happy on sight. She is from the island of Ohau Hawaii and has started workshops, hens’ parties, baby showers and any gatho, she brings a piece of Hawaii to everyone she meets. She always has a flower in her hair. Leiona believes that lei making is

meditative, relaxing and mindless. “The people that take my classes become consumed by the peace and happiness it brings to their busy minds. It is a true communion of beauty and friendship. Lei making consumes me,” Leiona says. So, if you are like me and can’t draw or paint (and I seriously doubted I had received any creative fibre in my body), lei making might be for you! My style is gathering a group of friends, putting on Fleetwood Mac, sitting on a throw with gorgeous flowers thrown in the middle. A jug of Mai Tais is mandatory! truly believe there are no accidents. I remember walking into a natural therapies college in Melbourne, in 1987. hen we think of the word ‘history’ we think of what happened in the past, and what that can teach us. Hopefully we can learn from that lesson to experience a better future, by not making the same mistakes over and over again! Indeed the ears and their ‘aural history’ represent a ‘past life’, and by carefully examining their texture and consistency, they can inform us of what has happened in the body recently. The epidermis and dermis acts as a physical map and a GPS to the gut; digestion and absorption, exposure to toxins and therefore predisposition to allergies via a ‘leaky gut’ system. An inflamed ear is a picture of an underlying pathology. Blending the methodology of eastern medicine with western medicine, we can review the ear and analyse its appearance. Using the systematic approach of Chinese medicine, various organ systems are linked to a meridian pathway. These paths are named after the organ they originate in. There are several meridians that are said to open in or near the ear. These are the gall bladder,

small intestine, and triple heater or San Jiao (which is a hormone regulating meridian). The stomach meridian runs just anterior, or in front of the external ear. In TCVM (Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine) terms, the inner ear and hearing is a physical manifestation of kidney function. Tinnitus, or the sensation of ringing of the ear and

hearing loss is a decrease in kidney strength. Sometimes the pinnae of the ear may seem hotter than the rest of the head and this is referred to as ‘empty heat’, or heat rising. The theory is that the kidneys ‘grab’ the mist from the head and bring that energy down, thus representing the kidneys as the cooling system or airconditioner.

ABOUT THE INTERNAL? Women in menopause often have hot flashes/flushes which can be interpreted as kidney yin deficiency, or that their ‘airconditioner is broken’. The epidermis may be inflamed from allergic internal (food intolerances) causes, atopy – contact or skin allergies, and from hormonal imbalances such as progesterone deficiency and hyperadrenocorticism. FOOD THERAPY To strengthen the kidneys, we can eat dark-coloured foods such as blueberries, blackberries and black fungus. As for herbal medicine, a specific herb called GeJe Kidney Nourishing is appropriate for kidney yin conditions such as tinnitus, urinary infection and warm limbs.
