Follow your bliss!

T

hese days we are encouraged from an early age to have all the ‘check-ups’ and learn to assess our bodies in terms of what is healthy and what is not. However, can we also learn to listen to our own wisdom? Do we stop when we need rest, do we ask ourselves what we would like in terms of food, the job we would like, the place we would like to live or what our body is saying? Bliss is a word and a state of being we don’t hear very much about, as many people are often just too busy, too stressed and too sick of it all. What would blissful living look like without it feeling like pressure, without it feeling like another ‘should’ on the endless to do list? Personally, I have given away the need to achieve ‘the perfect version of me’, given away the pressure to ‘nail getting ME right’ and am finding the joy of discovering all aspects of me, whatever

shows up and there is more bliss with that way of living for me. Can we let go of everywhere we are judging ourselves for not being a good enough parent, family member, partner, person… and everywhere we think we are being indulgent or selfish for expressing ourselves… So this month we are covering women’s health and self-care and we have covered a wide variety of topics probably more than ever before! As we have said previously, what works for one person may not for another and so we include a variety of perspectives to give people an idea of the choices they have. Suzi Le Fanue, our cover girl, shares her heart-warming and transformational story with Mary-Lou Stephens this month and it brings us joy to share this and the many, many great stories in this edition.

Remove from heat, cover with foil and let rest for 5 minutes. Reduce the heat and using the same pan, add final 2 tbsp of the olive oil. Add shallots and garlic and fry gently on low to medium heat for 3 minutes until tender. Turn up heat and add the wine, let it reduce by half. Remove from heat, add butter and stir gently to combine. Season to taste. Drizzle sauce over kangaroo and serve with steamed potatoes and broccolini or veg of your choice. * Note. Known to stimulate the appetite, juniper berries aren’t actually a true berry. These dark blue, almost black berries are female seed cones that resemble a berry and come from the Juniperus plant species, a bit like a conifer tree. Juniper berries are classified as a spice and are probably most famously known for flavouring gin as they are very aromatic and have a distinct flavour. They are used a lot in European cuisine, particularly French and Scandinavian dishes. They work very well with game like wild boar, kangaroo, venison and duck. I’m not a big fan of gamey meats but I do like venison that uses either a rub consisting of juniper berries, salt and pepper or a rich sauce that incorporates them. But don’t worry, your food won’t taste like gin! You can also throw a few berries into a beef or pork casserole – just crush them slightly and remember to pick them out at the end. Or you can grind up a herb and spice concoction of juniper berries, black pepper, salt, fresh garlic and rosemary, and rub onto roast potatoes.

Top Shop Tips for Ethical Buying WORDS DEBBIE KERTESZ and NATALIE PENN

ome people feel that ethical shopping and supermarkets are mutually exclusive. However, for reasons of convenience, cost or necessity, many of us do some of our shopping in a supermarket. So, when you’re there, what are the best products to look for if you’re trying to shop ethically? When it comes to animal products choose organic It’s not really possible to get up close and personal with producers at the supermarket, so when it comes to meat and dairy, choose certified organic. This is because the organic standards ensure that animals are reared with enough space to carry out their natural behaviours and are not subjected to painful mutilations. The standards also prohibit the use of antibiotics and growth hormones – which is an added bonus! Many supermarkets in the metro area now carry a decent range including: Cleaver’s or Macro Organic but any product carrying the certified organic logo is a good bet. Next best is free range If organic products are not available or if they’re out of your price range, you can usually find some free range products, such as pork and chicken, at the supermarket. Definitions for free range are less black and white than organic, as there are several free range accreditation schemes – each with different standards. Bottom line however, is all of these schemes are an improvement on conventional farming practices and are a good second choice (after organic)! Choose organic eggs While free range eggs are generally available in most

supermarkets these days, we’re not sure that the standards followed on farms that supply these eggs would meet most people’s definition of what free range egg farming should look like. The organisation responsible for accrediting these free range eggs farms has admitted that some farmers stock their hens at up to 40,000 per hectare when the domestic recommends no more than 1,500 hens per hectare. Hens on these farms may also be de-beaked, which shouldn’t be necessary if hens are being reared in true free range conditions. As mentioned above, certified organic standards definitely ensure a higher level of animal welfare. Avoid ingredients with palm oil Easier said than done… as astonishingly, palm oil is now an ingredient in one out of every ten supermarket products including food, cosmetics, cleaning and bath products! ‘Palm Oil Investigations’ is just about to release a Palm Oil Barcode Scanner App, which will identify palm oil content in products and its certification status. In the meantime, you’ll need to check the product label. Just a note, in Australia the presence of palm oil in a product doesn’t need to be declared on the label, and it most often appears as ‘vegetable oil’. The label must, however, declare the amount of saturated fat. So, if vegetable oil is listed as an ingredient AND the amount of saturated fat is also listed, it is pretty certain that it contains either palm kernel oil or palm oil. Other vegetable oils are not saturated and therefore saturated fat will not be listed. consumewithcare.org

Juice your way to great health

INGA AND ZANE TRUSCOTT ARE WELL KNOWN FOR THEIR WORK WITH INTERNATIONAL HEALTH EXPERT, DON TOLMAN, WHO THEY HAVE BEEN BRINGING TO AUSTRALIA SINCE 2006. THROUGH THIS EXPERIENCE, INGA AND ZANE HAVE GAINED IMMENSE WISDOM ABOUT THE POWER OF JUICE CLEANSING WHICH HAS INSPIRED THEIR CREATION OF THE CLEANSE KITCHEN.

INTERVIEW WITH INGA and ZANE TRUSCOTT

Holistic Bliss: Why juice cleanse? Inga and Zane: Juice-cleansing is designed to detoxify and renew your body by replacing solid foods with high frequency nutrition that your cells can rapidly absorb. It’s the perfect way to give your digestive system a rest for a short period and to reset your body and mind from the inside out. By ‘sipping’ and ‘chewing’ (not ‘chugging’) on only fresh juices, you’ll be helping to clear out toxins, restore your digestive system, enhance your skin clarity, break down stored fat, improve your sleep patterns and wake up with outrageous amounts of energy. Juice cleansing also re-balances and helps to get rid of the sludge and mucus stored in your digestive tract so that you can more effectively absorb nutrients. You’ll also look and feel years younger – in fact, you’ll actually be ‘radiating sun-beams from your skin’. HB: Why cold-pressed juice? Inga and Zane: Cold-pressing organic, fresh fruits and vegetables produces

10

10.indd 1

an unadulterated, nutrient-rich juice, bursting with enzymes, vitamins and minerals that your cells instantly recognise and LOVE. Conventional juicing methods on the other hand, like centrifugal juicers, rely on speed and heat to extract the juice. Whilst it’s better than not drinking juice at all, this process destroys the nutritional integrity of the produce, oxidising the juice. Cold-pressing is a two-step process that involves: first, carefully grinding the raw produce; and then slowly pressing it under extreme pressure using a hydraulic press, to create true LIVING juice. HB: Why The Cleanse Kitchen? Inga and Zane: With Don on our stage, we have taught literally thousands of people the benefits of fasting on raw, pressed juices and how to really own their health using the principles of Self Care. Through this experience, our team has played an integral role in guiding countless people through the process of a successful juice cleanse.

In establishing The Cleanse Kitchen, we’ve gone to great lengths to do things right. First, we’ve searched the globe to find the best hydraulic cold-press machinery that money can buy. We’ve also chosen the highest quality glass bottles available to ensure the ongoing purity and integrity of our product once it’s bottled. We’ve custom designed and fit out a kitchen and cold-room facility locally on the Gold Coast, specifically for the purpose of hand-preparing cold-pressed juice packs and cleanses. And we ONLY source the finest local and organic produce from growers in our region (no supermarket-grade produce makes the cut for our juices!). In a nut-shell, you can rest easy knowing that you’re getting the highest quality, nutrient-rich juices available from us, hand-prepared in our cool-room kitchen and then coldchain delivered in a refrigerated van, conveniently to your door! thecleansekitchen.com.au

Beautiful food feels beautiful when you make it, see it and eat it and then it helps you be beautiful from the inside out when you eat it too! Eating beautiful, I believe, is one of the most powerful ways we can nourish and love ourselves every single day. As a horticulturalist I love combining gardening with cooking and these biscuits are so incredibly easy to make and marigolds are such a delight to grow, so it just works! I just love these biscuits. We always have marigolds on hand, of all different kinds, I just love their vibrant beauty and they are an important inclusion in our organic plantings for their ability to repel nematodes in the soil and many other garden pests. Companion planting partners include eggplant, strawberry, leafy greens, tomato, potato, pumpkin, squash, chilli, capsicum, but not too close to legume crops. Marigolds grow easily with a nice compost rich soil, good drainage, plenty of sunshine and some regular liquid fertiliser like Seasol. They grow very easily from seed and most nurseries have seedlings in punnets. You can also buy organic edible flowers from some gourmet food stores, health food stores and Jeffers Market on the Sunshine Coast.

Marigold Biscuits RECIPE & PHOTO REBECCA MUGRIDGE

GLUTEN FREE, REFINED SUGAR FREE, BEAUTIFUL AND DELICIOUS Ingredients: 125g organic butter ½ cup organic dark coconut sugar 1 tsp organic vanilla paste 1¾ cups almond meal Organic marigold petals removed from flower, trim ends if needed, wash and let dry (about 4 flower heads) Method: Preheat oven to 160°C. In a bowl combine the butter and sugar together, then add in vanilla. Mix in the almond meal and about half the marigold petals. Roll the mixture into small balls – note, it should be a fairly dry, crumbly mixture, not too moist or the biscuits will spread too much when you bake them. If it feels to moist add a little more almond meal. Place the balls on a tray lined with baking paper, press each one

down slightly and then press a few petals on top for a decorative look. Bake the biscuits gently, they do not take that long so stay close by. Once they are gently browned on top and have a golden hue, around 10-12 minutes usually, take them out and let them cool on the tray or on a wire rack. Acid/alkaline balance: why is it so important? ourselves, learn how to take care of our body, not depend on medical procedures and medications unless absolutely necessary and all natural options have been exhausted. She totally opposes the idea of taking meal replacements, caffeine stimulating supplements or restrictive diets. All of those methods are only short-term solutions and they rarely work long term. They may help to drop the weight, but it will not be permanent and it will not restore vitality. “Our body is designed to be well rested, relaxed, oxygenated and nourished with wholesome, nutritious foods plus lots of restructured, living water.” For the best health, we need to be in alkaline state, which means that there is plenty of correctly structured oxygen available for the cells to repair and grow in a healthy vibrant manner. Cancer, parasites and fungus, cannot live in a well-oxygenated environment. They thrive in an acidic state lacking in oxygen where there is

FOOD FOR THE SOUL

Food from

All Colours

of the rainbow

WORDS SALLY BELL-CROSS, Nutrition Educator

Color is a power which directly influences the soul. – Wassily Kandinsky

M

ost of us might be used to thinking about the almighty calorie/kilojule when it comes to food. We might have gone further and adopted an eating paradigm based on weight loss, gut health, hormones, and spirituality. To some degree all eating behaviors exclude certain food groups, to achieve a therapeutic outcome. How many of us have overlooked one of the most important, essential aspects of eating: our connection to colour? And how many of us have considered the deeper relationship between the colour of the foods we repetitively eat and our symptomology? Emerging science is shedding light on perhaps another dimension to this already existing nutrition foundation. In addition to providing energy, or calories, for the body to function, constituents within food (phytochemicals) act as messengers that communicate with your body’s DNA

and influence to a large extent, the types of proteins and other compounds that cells manufacture. Taking this a step deeper into the atomic level, the vibrating energetic charged particles of food we consume interact electrically within the fluid matrix within the body to a significant degree. These vibrations ripple through the system, creating a surge of electrical currents to enhance or deplete the energy state of the cells. The takeaway is that food carries information that will signal our bodies to create proteins to support a vital, creative, optimal structure, or to lead to dysfunctional states such as inflammation and pain. The emerging message is that the quality of food, and the dietary signature it carries for the cells, is perhaps most essential of all. Largely, our current profile of eating lacks diversity (and colour!) and therefore has a deficit of good food signals. Largely our plate looks like the ‘Brown, Yellow, and White Foods Diet’ limited in supplying us with abundant, healthy compounds from plants that equip our cells to work optimally. The food industry has stripped away the colours of foods to give us processed cereals, breads, meats, flours, and

baked goods. We are left with lackluster eating devoid of the rich, flavourful phytochemicals that send high-quality information to our cells, allowing us to flourish. Each compound of colour, whether the purple anthocyanins found in grapes, or the red lycopene in tomatoes, has a specific function in the body. Science has revealed that these colours in the plant foods we consume have affinity to specific organ systems in the body. A deficiency in red and orange foods rich in essential phytonutrition may correlate to disorders of the urinary, reproductive, digestive lower abdominal regions of the body. Food that has been used traditionally to enrich these regions include (red and orange foods) beetroot, bitter berries, prunes, grapes, guava, carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato. If we omit a colour from the rainbow spectrum in our diet, we are not providing ourselves with the physiological and spiritual functions of that vibration. Hence, “rainbowed eating” is one of the keys to enhancing the whole of ourselves. integratedwellnessclinic.com.au

here is a belief that our lives are determined by two things; destiny and free will. Destiny presents us with situations and our free will chooses what we do with those situations. The theory goes further – destiny will keep dealing us the same type of scenarios until we learn the lessons we are meant to learn. Destiny may present itself to us through circumstances, events, other people, through tragedy or a moment of insight. What we do with those turning points, whether we recognise them as such or not, is up to us. Suzi Le Fanue’s first major turning point was a devastating one. She was nine years old when her mother died at the age of 25. The oldest of four children, Suzi was with her mother when she took her last breath. Literally, it was asthma that killed her mother, a disease that caused the death of her grandfather and afflicted Suzi as well. “During my childhood I was hospitalised for asthma literally weekly or

fortnightly,” Suzi says. “When I was nine I watched my mum pass away from an asthma attack. I really do think I became a naturopath because of her death. She was studying to be a nurse and she didn’t get to do it. She had dreams of travelling but never had the chance. I never take my health for granted, ever.” Her grandmother stepped in to take care of the family and taught Suzi a valuable lesson; that she could be, do and have anything she wanted in this world. In her teenage years Suzi, despite years of treatment, hospitalisations and allergy testing, was still battling asthma. She conducted her own research through the books she found at her local library. There she discovered that dairy products could be a major contributor to asthma, something none of the doctors had ever told her. She changed her diet and changed her life. Another moment of destiny. Not only did she lose weight but her asthma was under control for the first time. “I cleaned up my diet. I started eating

less junk and more fruit and vegetables. Within a month I was a completely different person. Back then I was not given diet recommendations for my asthma at all. These days the knowledge about asthma is growing, especially the role intolerances, stress and hormones play in the disease.” Destiny had presented Suzi with two scenarios. But we all take our own path to the place our future has in store for us. Suzi’s route took her on a few more detours. “I studied childcare because I love kids, I love working with kids. It’s a good job but it wasn’t really for me. I wanted to have my own thing, my own business.” Despite not having studied science to the required level at high school, Suzi enrolled in a Bachelor of Science. Once there she discovered that biomedical science was something that lit up her world. Her path took her towards a career in research. But the pressure of her studies took its toll. Anxiety and

panic attacks dogged her days. At the time, she and her boyfriend were surviving on very little money. Their diet consisted of the typical student fare of cheap carbohydrates and not enough protein. This was Suzi’s third brush with destiny. “When you live on so little it can be tough to eat well. I was suffering from anxiety and digestive issues. I didn’t have the money to get help from anyone. I watched YouTube videos on mindfulness and self development. As students we couldn’t afford much protein but we could afford frozen vegetables and legumes. I changed my mindset and my diet and once again my health improved.” Now the pieces were finally starting to fit together. Suzi shifted her attention to the field that impassioned her, that made sense of her life and experiences, to the path that she was destined to walk. She completed postgraduate studies in Naturopathy, Herbal Medicine and Nutritional Medicine. After gaining invaluable experience in a naturopathic clinic Suzi took the plunge. She and her husband Adam, who has been by her side since she was 15 and a constant source of support, opened their own clinic in Moolooaba. Their leap of faith was justified. Today Integrated Wellness Clinic is thriving and has a team of complementary health practitioners to cover the needs of every client. Suzi knows she is now doing what she was born to do. “People should always follow their passions but we all have so many of them. I was lucky to be able to give many of mine a go and to discover what

15.indd 1

was and wasn’t for me. Being hands-on in my own practice, this is me. I love facilitating change in people’s lives.” Suzi is passionate about helping others to lead lives of health and fulfilment. She has walked this path herself and knows the benefits that can be achieved through nutritional medicine, herbal medicine and diet correction. The majority of people who walk through Suzi’s door are women suffering from stress, fatigue and burn out. How can we answer destiny’s call when our heads are too full of the clamour of demands, problems and frustrations? “Women take on too much, everyone’s too busy. When we’re stressed we forget the basic principles of living well and eating healthily. The simple things add up to the big picture. Most digestive or hormonal issues stem from stress. It’s the biggest thing that needs addressing.” Suzi’s approach includes these three tips: 1. Practise mindfulness. Live in the present moment. There’s no positive gain to come from worrying about the future or the past. Be grateful for what you have right here and now. For anyone who suffers from anxiety, mindfulness is extremely beneficial.

2. Diet is vital. If everyday you’re eating the wrong foods it builds up over time. The gut is like the root system of a tree. How you treat the roots is how the tree will grow. If the roots are healthy the tree will thrive, the leaves will be fresh and green. The gut’s role is to digest our food so we have to give it good food to be healthy. 3. Make sure you smile every day. Do what you love. This is especially important for busy mums. I ask them, “What do you love doing, what do you enjoy? Do you do that?” And most of the time the answer is no. When I give them their food plans and supplements I also prescribe them homework in the form of doing things that make them smile and bring them joy. In this busy world of endless to-do lists and distractions we can all lose sight of the path that destiny might have us walk. We may well be too busy to even notice the signs that could lead us to a life of gentle fulfilment and everyday joys, or bold enlivened passion and world changing achievements. Are we too busy to eat well, rest well and smile at least once a day? Suzi Le Fanue sincerely hopes not. integratedwellnessclinic.com.au

WOMEN’S HEALTH AND SELF-CARE

Medical Intuition

– Your best friend is your thyroid

WORDS JEAN SHEEHAN, Principal – Millennium Education

W

hy do women ‘not care’ about themselves as much as they do their job, family and more? Self care is devotion to self which is held in the thyroid. Who would have thought that Helen’s best friend would be her thyroid gland? Helen had presented to me for a medical intuitive session about her thyroid and weight gain. She was about to discover the holistic approach including metaphysical and emotional healing aspects of the thyroid gland so she could live the life she wanted and be healthy on all levels including mental, physical and emotional. But first she needed to understand the medical aspect. The thyroid gland is situated on either side of the larynx and trachea in the neck. It manufactures thyroxin which controls the body’s metabolic rate. In others words how effectively it converts food into energy. The thyroid stores iodine. The thyroid hormone increases the rate at which cells oxidise glucose.

Behind this lies the parathyroid gland, which controls the level of calcium and phosphorus, in the bloodstream. In addition to physical growth, these glands are also believed to affect one’s mental development. Metaphysically and emotionally the thyroid gland will become unwell and affect the following areas for Helen in a negative way: • Devotion to self – Helen was not being her own best friend and she saw the worst in herself. • Communication – she did not know how to communicate what she wanted. • Suffocation – all the activities, thoughts and lifestyle were suffocating her. • Activity – everything was done for everyone else and never for her. • Expression of self – when she expressed herself she was always told to ‘be quiet’ from a very young age. Helen was over weight; feeling suffocated and was never able to do anything for herself. Each time she tried

to explain this to her husband Brett, he would say ‘I can’t talk now’. This only made her feel less valuable and she thought if she did more she would be loved and accepted. All her activities were based around ‘if I look busy I must be important’. This was a subconscious belief system she was taught by her Dad – ‘a busy person is a successful person’. Once Helen understood these concepts I gave Helen a weekly planner in which she must put herself first, express herself and ensure she feels heard. The first week she applied this she lost 2kg. Within a month she had lost 10kg and continued her journey until she lost 22kg. So remember your best friend is you and your thyroid. Always put yourself first and give the care you would to a brand new baby to YOU! AbsoluteEmpowerment.com

Loving the Skin you’re in WORDS MICHELLE LIGHTWORKER

I

believe we have all come into this world choosing a body. That doesn’t mean that we won’t struggle, hate, or harm it. In fact, most of us spend most of our lives doing just that, don’t we? What’s the point though? I mean if we’ve chosen it this time round to learn particular lessons and evolve, why do we fight it? Why don’t we just accept it? Why don’t we practise loving it as an extension of how we feel about ourselves? It’s because we don’t really love ourselves deep down. This is the catalyst. So we need to start there. The minute that you begin to make loving choices with regards to how you treat your body, you will begin to feel a difference in your energy, health and mental clarity. You will find it easier to make those loving healthy choices with food and exercise because you are coming from a place of love, not hate.

Sunshine ealth

I spent many years fighting the body that I had chosen in this lifetime. I was a skinny kid until my Greek ancestry kicked in at 14 and I became very curvy. I liked my food, so the rest is history. Now at 44, I am happy to accept and love the body that has ‘showed up’ with moderate eating and exercise. I no longer deprive myself or force myself to eat and exercise. I tune into what the loving choice is and I follow through. It’s that simple. Am I happy with my body? It’s not the size 8 I chased for years at the expense of loving myself. It’s a healthy 12-14. It feels loved and cared for. The love I feel for myself translates across to loving the skin I am in. So yes, I can say that with 100% certainty, I love this body I have chosen for this life. With my past profession as a counsellor and now as a Lightworker

Practitioner educator, I meet so many people who struggle with the body they have chosen. They may feel too fat, skinny, ugly, short, tall or be in chronic physical pain. It doesn’t really matter because at the end of the day, they need to come to a place of peace and replace that hate with love. If they do not, they avoid stepping into their light in such a big way. They avoid their infinite potential. We are not the bodies we have chosen. We are so much more. So loving the body we have chosen assists us to ‘get on with it’. Yes! Get on with living the life you have chosen. You have important things to do here. You know what they are don’t you? Or you have a niggling feeling, right? That’s the real stuff. That’s the stuff the ‘body hate’ assists us in avoiding. So start loving, so you can start living. lightworkerreflections.com

Fight Slumped Posture WORDS NATHAN REYNOLDS, Chiropractor

W

hen it comes to chiropractic care all bodies are equal but different. This is especially true when comparing men and women. Women are built with different joint angles and therefore need to be assessed differently when treating postural issues like back, neck or joint pain. Many posture problems presenting to our clinic are unique to women. A common problem is upper back and neck pain associated with a ‘slumped’ posture and often women present to my clinic with no pain but are concerned about the aesthetic aspect of their declining posture. We are all prone to developing a slumped posture to some degree however women are affected more. There are many reasons for the development of a slumped posture varying from person to person but the result is often the same. For some women the main complaint is the onset of pain and tenderness in the mid or upper back and the neck. Other women are concerned about the aesthetics of having a hunched upper

back posture and excessive protrusion of the head forward of the body. From a chiropractic perspective this posture, regardless of the physical or mechanical cause, is usually due to diminished postural reflexes and joints that are not moving correctly or ‘out of optimal alignment’. We are all born with specific postural reflexes which keep our joints in optimal alignment and therefore an optimal posture. Due to our modern lifestyles these reflexes diminish and in many cases disappear allowing a new slumped posture to become ‘normal’. This puts large stresses through the joints and muscles of the spine and eventually leads to pain and joints that become stuck or restricted. Chiropractic treatment works on two levels. On a biomechanical level it allows these restricted joints to move and therefore able to sit in its optimal position decreasing mechanical stress on the muscles and ligaments of the spine and relieving pain. Once the joints of the spine are moving correctly the

feedback of the spinal joints to the brain is increased and in turn our natural postural reflexes wake up and a more natural posture is promoted! As an exercise physiologist and chiropractor, I recognise not only the importance of regular chiropractic care but also the importance of moving your own body! Chiropractic treatment has an amazing impact on the body and reduces pain and promotes better posture. However to ensure you have the knowledge and ability to move your own body correctly, while maintaining a stress-free posture, specific ‘brain training’ exercise is a must. If your body doesn’t know how to determine a stress-creating posture from a stress-free posture then you are constantly putting yourself in positions that strain the joints and ligaments of the spine. By combining chiropractic treatment with the most up-to-date postural training exercises, I have seen patients correct their hunched posture, become pain free, stronger and more confident.

Three things I now know

My Body Craves

WORDS BLOSSOM BENEDICT

What if you took an hour every day and a day a week to nurture and care for your body?” When Access Consciousness® founder Gary Douglas asked me this question for the first time, I didn’t really know how to respond. “What do you mean a day every week? You mean like a whole day?!” I wanted to ask him flabbergasted. Somehow I didn’t see that happening. But isn’t that kind of crazy… that for this beautiful body, the one that carries us, puts up with our whims and gets hammered by our own self judgment daily, we would find it so hard to relegate a mere hour or day on occasion to nurture it? Over the years I have become better at taking and making and choosing this time. And boy is my body grateful! But I have to tell you, I was surprised to find it doesn’t always look like a bubble bath or a long walk on the beach like I

had pictured when I was first given this advice. I’d like to share with you 3 of the top (and most unexpected) things that I have found most nurturing to my body. May they invite more ideas in your own life! 1. Questions! The single most nurturing thing I now do is ask my body questions. And not just an hour a day, all day! Body what would you like to eat? Body, what would you like to wear? I don’t ask it “which horse will win at the races?” or “what colour curtains should I buy?” Those don’t really concern my body. But if it will touch my body, inside or out, my body gets consulted! 2. Turn off the judgment If you had a friend who was constantly giving you negative commentary, would you continue to hang out with them? Our bodies are SO forgiving, but that doesn’t mean they

appreciate the judgment. Start noticing all the small mean things you say to you… and stop it! 3. Notice your conclusions I used to get a pain in my head and immediately jump to the conclusion “I have a headache”, followed by all the conclusions about how I could get rid of it. When I started questioning everything, I started asking things like “body, what awareness are you giving me?” “What are you telling me?” What if your body was continuously giving you information? What if it was actually on your side? It turns out my body doesn’t need one hour a day and one day a week – although that was a great place to start. What it appreciates even more is to be considered continuously. What if your body is willing to gift to you always? Would you be willing to finally be on the same team? accessconsciousness.com

ith the fall and destruction of the Mayan and Inca Societies, the disappearance of the Atlantean communities, the fall of the Pharaohic Dynasty in Egypt, and the rise of the Romans and the various Christian and non-Christian religions and churches across the world; the era of the Goddess/High Priestess came to an end, and ushered in the era of the ‘male’ dominated religious organisations. And with this era came many things which the world did not want, the most prominent of which is the incidence of sexual abuse foisted on some of the younger members of these religious institutions. In England, women were not even allowed to vote until the early 1900s, and some of the European and Asian religions consider the women of their communities to be no better than slaves. However, this situation seems to be in the process of change; and lately, many women seem to be feeling

Goddess

the need to regain the old ways, and take back the leadership of their communities and collective Spiritual direction. In truth, this would not be a bad thing once the transition has taken place; at the moment though, it is the way in which the transition is being pushed that is the biggest problem. Because of many years of male dominated control, some women have been lead to believe that the only way to regain their power is to fight and compete with the men to get it back. This, could not be further from the truth, as the result of this competition will be men who will compete just as hard to keep the power they ‘think’ they have now. The fact is that the majority of women have lost the ability and knowledge of ‘how’ to be ‘in’ their feminine power. And before I get any emails or feedback from women who tell me that they know how to be feminine, I said ‘feminine power’; which is quite different from ‘being’ feminine,

and, the ‘Feminist Movement’ and the ‘Ban the Bra’ brigade, in a lot of ways, did more damage than good to the energy of womanhood. Being powerfully feminine is in being self-confident, not self-serving; it is in knowing that you do not have to bow down to anyone, and not being pompous or snobbish in that attitude. The key is to be yourself and be kind to you, then you can be the most beautiful goddess you can be; unconditionally loving, forgiving, accepting and non judgemental – in fact, everything a true powerfully feminine god/goddess should be. re you a woman who feels frustrated, annoyed and anxious? You are a person who likes to “pay it forward” and really make a difference to others. You also believe deep down that you are capable of something great. You’re not sure what it is but you have ideas that you’d like to explore further. You might find it hard to imagine what it would be like to actually have a job that doesn’t feel like work, to follow your natural passions and interests. Your life is comfortable and to date you’ve put the hours and effort in towards your life/career/family that has provided you with a certain level of success but you know deep down inside that you’re holding back, resisting, not really stepping up into the opportunities for growth and expansion when they come your way. You stay safe, then feel frustrated and angry when things don’t change and you don’t see the kinds of results in your own life or for your family that you see others enjoy and benefit from. You so much want to attract the people and circumstances that will forward your goals and passions. You would like to be able to confidently share yourself with others without feeling that you’re not good enough or that you have nothing to contribute.

You have a lot of resources attended workshops, seminars, invested time and money over the years. For you now though, it’s time to take it to the next level. And you’re not sure how?? You know that it’s time to make a return on investment and step into the person you know you are. The thing is nobody told you how hard it would be to maintain any kind of work/life balance. Sometimes you feel like a rat on a wheel going round and round getting nowhere, feeling that pressure to have it all handled, worrying what other people think and providing for your loved ones. You are known for your “go get em” attitude and you’re wondering why isn’t it working for you now. There’s got to be an easier way to have quality time with your partner/kids and still have a successful business/career attracting the kind of abundance that offers you choice and stability. There are times when you wish you could just have a predictable life, and the longer you hesitate, the more it chips away at your confidence. You know you need to take the first step and the time is now, enough is enough and you’re ready, you just don’t know how… Imagine if you could make more

Vitamin E at its best! WORDS GABY SCOTT

I

Holistic Business Profile

have a childhood memory of a big tub of vitamin E cream which always sat on my Nanna’s dressing table. She was a beautiful woman, but I don’t think it was a result of that vitamin E cream! Vitamin E has been hailed for generations as a vital part of skin regeneration, particularly because of its ability to reverse the damage caused by environmental free radicals. However unless that vitamin E comes from a potent natural source, you may as well slather margarine on your face! Vitamin E does occur naturally in many different oils, and is made up of eight different components, known as tocopherols and tocotrienols. Modern science has primarily isolated only one of these elements as the main one to use as a supplement and antioxidant (the alpha-tocopherol form). It is however becoming increasingly evident that the synergy of all of the components together, and especially the levels of gamma-tocopherol, which is found in natural oil sources of vitamin E such as pumpkin seed oil, rosehip oil, linseed oil and walnut oil is what makes vitamin E so effective as an antioxidant. The lesson to be learnt from this? Ditch the cream with next to no useful vitamin E in it, and focus instead on natural, potent, oil combinations for antiageing, scar reducing, and general skin health.

Support for women with

Breast Cancer WORDS PIA HUGHES

E

ncore is a FREE 8-week exercise and information program designed specifically for women who have experienced breast cancer at any time in their life. It is a YWCA registered Australia-wide program, delivered by women for women who have experienced breast cancer and has been operating for over 31 years. In line with latest research, the program targets side effects of surgery and treatment through mobility, stretching, aerobic and resistance exercises. The program also offers information through guest speakers, links into local services and an opportunity to connect with women who share a similar experience in a safe, fun and supportive environment. Utilising both land and water exercises, YWCA Encore improves overall fitness as well as managing side effects associated with breast cancer treatment such as pain, fatigue, loss of mobility and strength. The program can be tailored to each individual, accommodating for all fitness levels. Participation is free, by enrolment only and medical approval is required. Additionally, the program builds self esteem, assists in relieving stress, restoring a sense of control, reducing the risk of lymphoedema and assisting in the management of lymphoedema. Weekly structured 2-hour sessions are delivered over 8 consecutive weeks incorporating land and water based exercises, information sharing, take home exercises and peer support. Our speakers cover topics such as nutrition, tai chi, laughter therapy, mind therapy, lymphatic drainage, relaxation techniques, yoga and more. WOMEN’S HEALTH AND SELF-CARE During 2014 the YWCA Encore program has been successfully delivered and well received by local participants on the Sunshine Coast for the very first time. A growing demand for this unique program will see it being offered again in Noosa and Kawana in 2015. While there are several other cancer support groups in the community, Encore is the only program that offers support, education and exercise as a package that is accessible by all women who have experienced breast cancer at no charge. Unlike other States and Territories in Australia, Queensland Health does not fund this valuable program and very limited reimbursement options are available from private health insurance or Medicare for exercise programs, classes or gym memberships. Here on the Sunshine Coast, without the generosity and financial assistance of community grants, corporate sponsorship and fundraiser raffles, delivering this program would not be possible. On behalf of the many women who have benefited from the program in 2014, as program facilitator I would like to thank Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Supports Club, Sunshine Coast Council, local business operators Greg Christensen of Mountain Dew Natural Spring Water, Diane and Marilyn of Healthy Living Directory, Wendy Jordan of Tupperware for their corporate sponsorship and valued guest speakers Silke Herwald, Deborah Quinn, Trish Madden, Susan Brown, Heidi DeWald, Tania Shaw and TrishaRose for gifting their time and expertise. YWCA Encore Facilitator PIA HUGHES would love to hear from anyone interested in becoming a 2015 corporate partner, sponsor or contributor to the sustainability of this program on the Sunshine Coast. Standing out in Isolation – healing from the shame of PCOS

H SHAME HAS BEEN A CONSTANT COMPANION FOR DANIELLE MORTIMER. IT HAS CLUNG TO HER LIKE A CLOUD OF TOXIC MIASMA, CLOGGING HER EMOTIONS AND STOPPING HER FROM OPENING HER HEART AND LIFE TO THOSE AROUND HER.

er journey with shame started when she was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) at 16. Now in her late 30s, she is only just beginning to peak out from behind the mask she constructed to start healing. PCOS is an insidious syndrome that affects one in 20 Australian women of reproductive age. The symptoms of weight gain, infertility, excess hair growth and skin tags assault a woman’s sense of self-worth, made even worse by the lack of conversations around the impact of PCOS. Danielle remembers well when shame gripped her life. “I was in Year 11 and went to the doctors because of painful and irregular periods,” she said. “After a battery of tests, over a six-month period, the results came back that I had PCOS. At the time, a diagnosis was not easy to get and there was not a lot of support. “Sixteen is a formative time for girls – exploring boyfriends, bodies and the swirl of emotions that goes with all of this.

Body Consciousness Intensive Training Course (BCI) BCI will assist you to opening up and being all of YOU!!

This course will allow you to identify the negative core beliefs and patterns and programs that prevent you from choosing a path that is truly representative of YOU! It gives you the ability to tap into your intuitive higher self to gather answers and directions about what is happening in times of overwhelm and confusion. You will discover your inner courage to clear negative belief systems and make choices that inspire you to follow what excites your heart and live a life you love.

“All of a sudden I’m told I’ll never have children, will probably grow facial hair and will battle with my weight for the rest of my life. Danielle’s sense of who she was as a woman was thrown into a spin. “The diagnosis made me feel like a fake, less of a female,” she said. “I was a studious, quiet person; not overly confident about myself. The PCOS diagnosis kicked me over the top – it just confirmed my perception of myself as not being worthy or attractive.” Danielle shut down. Turned her emotions off to everyone. “I shut off the part of me that wanted children and relationships. I thought if I convinced myself I didn’t really want a baby or a partner, it would be less painful,” she said. Life became a roller-coaster of losing weight, putting it back on, hiding facial hair growth and stifling feelings, never sharing with anyone. About four years ago, this all

changed. Danielle won a ticket to attend an emotional healing bootcamp. “As much as I did not want to go, because that meant exposing myself, I was in that much pain, I knew something had to change. So I went. I was willing to do anything to start healing,” Danielle said. “I started to believe there was a different way to live. So much of my life had been about hiding and shame, being petrified of people seeing me. I was ashamed of the effects of PCOS.” What Danielle has come to realise over the past four years is hiding from her emotions was her way of dealing with the pain. “I should have done more to search for answers but I just took everything I was told at face value. I know I needed to take responsibility for myself,” she said. Danielle said the bootcamp she went to focused on being a woman. “It was perfect for me. I found myself in a room

I started to believe there was a different way to live. So much of my life had been about hiding and shame, being petrified of people seeing me. I was ashamed of the effects of PCOS.

s

of women who openly and joyously shared their emotions,” she said. “I had a choice to jump in or run. I chose to jump in. Since then I have attended many more bootcamps. Healing is a process; I have layers I am stripping down and it takes time. “Some days are great, while others I go back to old ways… but I have learnt not to be so hard on myself.” Danielle said it is ok to be sad, angry and scared about PCOS. “I know now it does not define me,” she said. Meditation is also a tool Danielle uses. “It helps me touch how I am feeling,” she said. “I have started to talk to people about how I feel and about how the symptoms of PCOS affects me. Not talking about it only made the shame deeper, made it grow.” Another aspect of Danielle’s healing journey is publicly talking about PCOS. Over the past 12 months she has created a website focusing on two of the main symptoms – hair growth and weight, she blogs, has a Facebook page and shares her story with whomever wants to hear it. “Twelve months ago I would rather have jumped off a cliff than talk about it. Now, talking and expressing how I feel is healing.” facebook.com/dani.mortimer

Tired? You could have

‘Empty Jug Syndrome’!

WORDS ANNIE INFINITE

A

s co-manager of a bustling Wellness Centre I see it all the time, the tired look of a woman who is giving away too much of herself, forgetting to take time to rest or rejuvenate. The exhausted mother of two I was looking at last week, is a special and lovely lady who forgoes lunch if her clients need her, who rushes from clients to pick up her children from school and back again, hardly even daring to say no to anyone. As women we know this well don’t we? However we as women need to remember the parable of the water jug, that you can only pour water for others, if you refill the jug regularly, which is why I call this life challenge ‘Empty Jug Syndrome.’ We women need reminding to ‘refill our jug’ regularly and women in business need to understand that there are good reasons to be judicious about doing this. “If you always put someone else first, there’s a tendency

for others to depreciate you, to lose respect, because respect comes from an understanding that that person has her own wishes, dreams, and desires,” says Ethel S Person, MD, author of “Feeling Strong: The Achievement of Authentic Power.” Besides, why must there be only one person in first place at a time? “It’s possible to have equal concerns for yourself and for loved ones,” says Person. “There aren’t always conflicting priorities.” In fact, being skilled at taking care of yourself may improve your capacity to care for others; if you’re not fulfilled, you’re only able to see other people through the filter of your own needs. And studies suggest that not taking care of ourselves is unhealthy for those who depend upon us. In fact Michael Gerber author of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” always recommended putting your ‘Me Time’ into your diary first, as an uncompromising date with yourself every week.

I reminded this lovely practitioner of these facts, and just as I am reminding you right now to take that time, to revel in alone time, to practise doing things that bring you joy, put a smile on your face and peace in your heart. It could be a Yoga class, a meditation class, or walking on the beach, being creative, a weekly massage or therapy session or you might change it up every week, however your first priority has to be to refill your jug, so you can keep being of service in all the ways that bring you joy. It’s the easy way to put yourself first. And it only takes a moment. ANNIE INFINITE is co-manager of Pathways Wellness Centre, after spending over 20 years as a therapist herself. Pathways Wellness Centre, 7 Ocean Street, Maroochydore has classes, workshops and wonderful practitioners who can help you give back to yourself and refill your ‘jug’. pathwayswellnesscentre.com

Taking in the NOW WORDS NIKKI VANDENBERG

s I sit on God’s earth connecting my base chakra to the roots of my heritage, I begin to feel the uprising and energies bountiful from the custodians of this land. Vibration felt in every breath we breathe. With my eyes closed I begin to feel the emotion awakening within my vessel. At this moment stillness and silence has found me. My soul is warmed by the masculine energy moving through light as the sun’s rays beam outwardly. Each moment, energy enters my skin and my pores effortlessly. My body is breath drawing in this gift, selflessly gifted by the sun, mother nature and powered by the will of the divine. Gratitude for this moment sits beyond my body, beyond the comprehension of my earthly mind. Connecting with my soul I feel more alive and see heaven on earth. The NOW is here. This moment, as I see, as I feel, as I choose it to be. The true art of vision has come

via closing my eyes. Colours show themselves, energy appears as a light show impressive and yet without ego. I draw in breath and absorb the warmth vibrating against my skin. Still and in awe a ladybird lands on my nose. With one touch I watch her fly away. A gentle reminder to open my eyes as more magic awaits me. Patterns in life are keys and clues into what energy and storylines we are playing with. No moment is more precious than this moment, that’s all we really have. Each and every decision and thought happens in THE NOW. Filter your thoughts, choose wisely your circle of influence for this surrounds your energy in THE NOW. Become the seer, breathing, thinking with gratitude for this moment. People, if you’re looking outside of yourself for gratification, satisfaction, acceptance and confirmation, I strongly recommend you close your eyes and find heaven on earth within you.

The mystery of empowerment lies within each element of gratitude. • I am grateful to see the ocean effortlessly allowing energy to move within its physical form… the wave, the water • I am grateful to hear the ocean exhale • I am grateful for the emotion ignited within me, by simply sitting in the NOW • I am grateful the ocean creates movement for people to ride the waves of life – connecting them to their emotion, cleansing thoughts and the human vessel. All within the purification of its water. • I am grateful to see so many souls honouring these gifts as they sit on the same place in awe of the NOW • I am grateful for the exhalation and breath of life. sacredomyoga.com.au

Relationships

– Your No. 1 area for growth!

WORDS JULES O’NEILL | PHOTO ROBECCER McLEAN PHOTOGRAPHER

he challenge isn’t being ourselves; it’s being ourselves in relationships! Think of all the people you experience relationships with; your partner, children, friends, family, work

colleagues etc. The purpose of each and every one of these relationships is to help us grow and expand in a way that is mutually beneficial for everyone! To assist in understanding this paradigm, think of it like this: EVERY person I

interact with is a direct reflection of ME in some way! By exploring and understanding these reflections you can expand your own understanding of yourself and grow in ways you never thought possible! Relationships help us uncover those subconscious patterns and programs that can be cleverly hidden by the ego. Programs that will sabotage who we really want to be and do, programs that we are completely unable to see in ourselves! This is where the power of relationships truly lies, for we cannot uncover some of these patterns without other people to help show us! My point here is that anything you identify in someone else (whether you perceive it as positive or negative) is also in YOU! Whilst this can be confronting at times, understanding this truth can be life changing! We are all creatures of growth searching to become more of ourselves. Chances are if you are reading Holistic Bliss you are into self-awareness. Courses, workshops, retreats, meditations etc are all helpful, however many of us neglect to understand the profound purpose of relationships – to help discover more of YOU! Where do you start? Try blame and criticism! Any time you go to blame others, thinking they are at fault, or complain

about someone else, it is the universe trying to show you the parts of you that are in the way of your growth and the creation of harmonious relationships. Are you ready to let go of these ingrained patterns? Starting with the people you live with, every time you go into victim behaviour, blame, complain, have resistance to, defend or get irritated by the action or words of your closest relationships – STOP! Recognise that you are in an unconscious pattern of behaviour and look at where the reflection is in YOU. All subconscious programmes are triggered by an emotional response – this tells you there is something in YOU that needs to be explored and released. And how will you know you have successfully cleared whatever issue has been triggered? Simple! Any emotional responses you were feeling would have gone! You are balanced in your emotions and all will feel well in your world. Do you recall that feeling just before you fall into a familiar argument with a loved one? A sense of inevitability, that ‘here we go again’ feeling? By recognising that you have been triggered emotionally and by looking at where that trigger is in YOU, things will start to change dramatically. Consider this example: You have repeatedly told your

partner to close the door after he uses the wardrobe, however a lot of the time he continues to leave it open. You are not sure why, but it irritates you. The next time he leaves the door open you feel the familiar stories come through; “he never listens to me”; “if he cared for me he would close the door”; “I must be really worthless if he won’t even close the wardrobe door for me”, or “is this guy just really dumb?”. It is not really about the wardrobe door is it? So, rather than letting the automatic emotional response take over, instead consider that all those thoughts running through your head are really about YOU! Where are YOU not listening? Where are YOU not caring? Where are YOU not valuing others? Where are YOU being careless? Once you have examined your trigger and found your ‘Aha!’ realisation (this is where Body Consciousness can greatly assist), you can address the open wardrobe door with your partner: “I noticed that you left the door to the wardrobe open again even though you promised you wouldn’t. I know you love me and you wouldn’t do it deliberately so there must be something going on with you, and this is your body’s way of showing it to me. Care to talk about it?” Regardless of what your partner’s reaction is from this point on, you have made your intention clear of what you

Starting with the people you live with, every time you go into victim behaviour, blame, complain, have resistance to, defend or get irritated by the action or words of your closest relationships – STOP!

want, by stating the facts and not making the other person wrong. Would you agree that this approach would be more conducive to a loving relationship than “You’ve left the wardrobe door open AGAIN! What is WRONG with you!” Rather than replaying the same old argument record, have the courage to face your subconscious programming and become that balanced human that you were born to be; one that is not negatively influenced or affected by the actions or words of others. In this way you will truly discover you, and be the inspiration to every soul you meet to do the same. Pay attention, take responsibility and look within to discover the REAL you through the magic of relationships! WOMEN’S HEALTH AND SELF-CARE

Snappy, teary, tender and bloated?

M

any women accept premenstrual syndrome (PMS) as a normal part of life that they just have to deal with. This monthly mayhem does not have to be a part of life though! These monthly changes in mood, appetite, energy and sleep patterns are an annoying part of life and should not be considered “normal”. In Australia, it is estimated that up to 70% of women experience PMS at some point in their life, with 18% of women suffering the most severe form of PMS; premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). PMS encompasses a broad collection of symptoms commonly experienced in the last week or two of a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle. Common symptoms include – breast soreness, food cravings, increased appetite, fluid retention, moodiness, poor concentration, skin breakouts and headaches. This collection of physical and emotional symptoms related to the menstrual cycle are often bad enough to interfere with day-to-day life, but they can be managed easily with natural medicines. PMS is a condition that is easy to treat

30

30.indd 1

with herbs and nutrients. Creating a balanced monthly cycle can be achieved with simple diet and lifestyle changes and by using natural medicines that can help get your cycle into balance and keep it in balance. People have used herbs and natural medicines for thousands of years to help maintain a healthy hormonal balance and reduce the severity of their PMS symptoms. Thankfully herbal help is at hand! An imbalance in hormone levels causes undesirable changes in moods, behaviour and physical symptoms. However, every woman will have her own individual response to these hormonal imbalances. For women who experience symptoms, they may find relief from herbal remedies that contain Bupleurum and Paeonia. Bupleurum: Bupleurum falcatum may help to relieve menstrual irregularity related to stress. It has a mild sedative action, helping with emotional instability and mood swings. Paeonia: Paeonia lactiflora (white peony) is commonly used for regulating the menstrual cycle and reducing PMS symptoms. There are many herbal

medicines for PMS and consult your natural health practitioner for ones that will suit you. As well as these great natural supplements, the following dietary and lifestyle changes will also help you achieve a healthy hormonal balance: • Avoid caffeine, salt, alcohol, chocolate, saturated fats and sugar. • A diet high in fresh fruit, vegetables, essential fatty acids and lean protein sources provides essential phytonutrients, antioxidants and magnesium. • Eliminate foods that can contribute to hormone imbalances. These include non-organic poultry, dairy, red meats, sugar, white flour and refined foods. • Include detoxifying foods such as beets, carrot, yams, garlic, dark leafy greens, lemons and apples. • Increase fibre in the diet. • Stress management techniques, such as yoga, meditation and exercise are advised. If you want to control your hormones rather than letting them control your life, please give us a call today for more information. Visit: ibukihealth.com

STOP BEING SELFISH – Why caring for yourself is the greatest kindness WORDS MARIA LIEDKE

C

aring for yourself is important. It’s necessary. It’s not a “nice to have”, but is critical for your emotional wellbeing and your emotional growth. I believe that self-love is the greatest kindness you can offer the world. Because once you take care of yourself, you can take care of others. You can do great work. You can be available for all kinds of people, projects and possibilities. What is Self-Love? Self-love is something that is born within you. It is a feeling that you are worthy and good enough for anything life offers. To have a healthy sense of oneself does not imply that we are so focused on ourselves that we become uncaring towards others. Actually the opposite is true. I am not talking about self-love to the point of narcissism or selfabsorption. That’s an entirely different thing. Narcissism is where there is such a one-eyed fascination with self that the person develops a belief that special treatment is their god given right. Narcissists believe they are more important than anyone else and crave attention and admiration. As a result of this complete self-absorption, they lack the ability to truly care and have empathy for others. What I am talking about when I talk about authentic self-love is the ability to accept and love yourself for just being you. This is loving the good, bad and everything in between about yourself. Self-love means that while we care for others we also care about ourselves.

When we act in ways that expand self-love in us, we begin to accept our weaknesses and our strengths. This love for oneself usually extends outwards towards others. This is why people who care for themselves are so wonderful at caring for others. If we are unable to love ourselves first and foremost, we are unable to give love to anyone else. We cannot give unconditional love if we do not possess it ourselves. This is because we tend to judge others by the same ‘harsh critic’ with which we judge ourselves. Distorted Messages For many, it has been a life-long condition to put others before ourselves. When we explore our psychology as a child, more often than not we find that our needs as children were often not met. We were told how to think, feel and what to do. Paying attention to our own needs, feelings and goals was perceived as wrong and selfish. We were told that to put ourselves first was egotistical and self-centred. Our identities merged with our family. Our family environment and the messages given to us did not encourage us to share our own authentic and individual feelings and thoughts. We learned to be there for others, and to put our own needs aside. As children we need security and healthy modelling of emotions in order to understand our own inner signals. Unfortunately, many families are running on outdated structures and beliefs of what a family should look like. These beliefs have been handed down from generation to generation. We have

been taught that the family as a whole is more important than each individual. Let me give you an example: With Self-Love If I do something for you, I do it because I want to and without expectation that you do something for me in return. If you do not like what I do for you I will likely feel a little sad and disappointed, but I can accept your decision and response. No matter what your response is, I know that what I did was a loving gesture and my sense of self-love and self-acceptance remains strong. Without Self-Love If I do something for you, I do it because I need and expect you to like it. I also need and expect you to like me for doing it for you. If you like what I do for you, I need and expect you to praise and approve of me. Only then will I feel good about myself. If you don’t like what I do for you, I will feel extremely sad and disappointed and possibly angry. I will have thoughts about myself that I am not good enough. My sense of self decreases if you don’t like what I did for you and I have not got the love and approval I needed. Happiness and contentment becomes possible for those who take up the challenge of “being selfish” and discovering who they really are. The Emerging Woman WORDS JANET McGEEVER

here’s a new woman emerging – a woman who wants to know selflove. A woman who wants to live an authentic life where she knows deeply she is valued, loved and respected because she values, loves and respects her own self. And nothing short of that will do. A woman whose desire to love herself is

foremost above loving another, as she’s learnt that all her focus on others has only drained her body, her emotions and her love. She’s wisened up. It doesn’t make her less loving. In fact she loves more. Because more is available to her. More life. More energy. More love. She understands her limits and begins to rearrange her life within that.

hearted or closed in the expression of them. She’s been her harshest critic, her meanest taskmaster and now… she knows, it’s time. She can feel something changing in the wind. She knows this can’t go on. The emerging woman has been through a lot – her body knows what it’s like to be manipulated, distorted, pushed and pulled. Perhaps she’s conceived or birthed babies, recently or a long time ago… perhaps not at all. Still she knows the pain and suffering of it all. She also knows the joy and bliss that comes from living deeply in her body – she knows the potential of that. Yet sometimes it might seem elusive. The emerging woman can feel the yearning in her heart. Yet the dishes need to be done. The children need to be cared for. The bills need to be paid. Oh and the career, can’t forget that… or the marriage or the sex life. But she can feel something changing in the wind. She knows this unlimited activity and unrealistic expectation of self can’t go on. She is coming to know when she needs nurturing, some ‘me’ time, time to return to her own self in a meaningful way. It’s not enough to go shopping or have a coffee. She returns to herself in a way that ignites her passion for life, renews

her hope for love that fills her cup so that she can go forth and spread her love through her own work, her relationship and her family. But she knows this can’t be done from an empty cup. She is learning to say No. It’s time to bed down… ah, but not fall asleep, just time to rest long enough in the hearth of Love. Time to replenish. To gather in all the lost threads she has thrown out all these years. To gather them in like little lost children, all those little ones trying so hard to please, to be loved, to be cared for, to achieve, to be recognised. And when she does that, she becomes whole again. The emerging woman mothers these ones like she has never mothered before. She rekindles her childhood loves. Those things that make her laugh, sing, dance and create. She finds a well of love inside her that aches to be expressed, but she learns to wisely contain it this time. For in the containment, she’s discovered it becomes more potent. In fact she becomes even more generous with her love. It is effortless. Her compassion is unmeasured and it extends beyond family and creed. She learns to not spill her sexual energy everywhere, for again she knows that the containment creates more potency, more love, more creativity, more life for her and more love for others.

She is choosy about who and when she shares this with. However she does not control or seduce with her sexual energy. She knows the deeper calling of her heart and its integrity and stands strongly by that. Are you this woman? Do you feel her emerging in you? Every woman on the planet is this emerging woman in some form or another. You cannot miss this uprising. It is happening everywhere. For women, the call to self-nurture and selflove has never been more crucial, in this speedy life and world. Balance is needed urgently – war is raging in some parts, drugs that never existed 30 years ago are ruining families and whole townships, the violence between men and women is increasing. Dear woman, it starts with you and me. We have a role, to cultivate the conscious feminine heart. The journey to this is self-care, self-respect and selflove. Only when we make this a priority, can we authentically relate with our beloved, give and serve humanity in a way that is sustainable and that creates balance within us, and consequently our relationships, families and communities. I’m here to honour the emergent woman. Will you join me? JANET McGEEVER is presenter of Time for Femininity and The Making Love Retreat. theconsciousheart.com

BODY BLISS

“My dear, goodness had nothing to do with it!” WORDS SHAUNA TEAKEN

D

rawls a white mink-clad Mae West, sexy siren of the silver screen, as she prowls into a night club. “Goodness, what beautiful diamonds!” exclaims the waitress. What if goodness has nothing to do with having a blissfully happy body either? A body that purrs with pleasure, looks and feels young, vital and full of vitality? Being ‘good’ – watching your weight, your carbs, your fats, your cardio, and working hard, all the while judging and criticising yourself if you don’t measure up, is not much fun! Being ‘bad’ – is sometimes so much more enjoyable! In working in fitness clubs and running my own fitness business in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, I’ve set diets and exercise programs for literally thousands of people. I’ve guinea-pigged just about everything on myself, too! Guess what? I gave up diets and going to gyms

years ago. I just don’t enjoy it! It’s like a prison sentence to me. How about you? Most people judge the cr*p out of themselves. Being ‘bad’ or wrong extends to how we feel about our bodies. We heap manure on ourselves as if that will motivate us to change. Mostly, it doesn’t, or not for very long. I’ve discovered pleasure is a key. Find what your body enjoys and give it that. It may surprise you. Sometimes it’s ‘junk’ food and sometimes it’s ‘health’ food. And sometimes, the body wants no food. I don’t judge it anymore. Bodies love movement, and you may find you don’t need as much as you think! My body loves walking and dancing. Ask your body! Ten minutes bopping with the radio up loud is a 1000 times more dynamic than pushing yourself to do exercise you hate. It’s about energetically connecting with your body. Every molecule in the universe communicates with us. If you would molecularly communicate with your body, you will receive information.

How? Ask questions. And listen. It’s subtle. You begin talking to your body, but it’s like learning a new language. It’s not words. It’s energy. You can ask your body “Body what do you require or desire?” and whatever feels lighter, have that. Slow down and really taste the food. Next time you’re hungry, ask your body if it wants to eat. Maybe it doesn’t! It’s about developing a relationship with your body – and actually, as that relationship grows – your relationships with your money, other people, your career, even the earth, will change, too. This is a revolutionary approach to changing body shape, healing and “youthing” – playing with your body like it’s your best friend, not just a meat package that’s a bother to deal with. Have a play. Be a little naughty. SHAUNA TEAKEN is a self-confessed hedonist – if it isn’t fun she isn’t doing it – and runs workshops/sessions in Brisbane. She can be found at Shauna’sIsland.com

HOLISTIC KIDS AND PARENTS

Women and Self Care WITH JEAN SHEEHAN, Principal – Millennium Education

Millennium Children Q: ‘As a woman how can I be a role model for my children and how they care for themselves?’ A: What is the meaning of ‘care’? “The provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone or something” and “Serious attention or consideration applied to doing something correctly or to avoid damage or risk.” This is so important when it comes to children and ourselves. Generally speaking we all want to avoid damage physically, mentally and emotionally. We learn from mimicking what is done not by what is said. So how can you be a role model for children? Easy – put yourself as a priority, do as you say, action what you want and they will follow. Let’s bring it back to basics. Do you have a lifestyle that is conducive to great health? Do you eat nourishing meals in a relaxed manner, is it nutritious and does it look

delicious? Do you exercise every day? Do you wear what makes you feel fabulous? Do you listen to inspiring music, people and surround yourself with things, places and people that make your heart buzz and your cells vibrate with pure joy? If not, the children will know and will mimic this subconsciously. Many times I have women come for Medical Intuitive sessions about their children, teenagers and even family saying ‘they just don’t care for themselves’. It starts with you. At certain ages children will give up on themselves or even be side-tracked that they do not ‘remember’ to care for themselves. As teenagers, children want to experience life as we did and don’t think about the future and choose to ignore the ‘care factor’. In actual fact they will say ‘I don’t care’. As a parent, teacher or guide (authority figure) for children, clarify what is important to you that signifies

‘care’ of you. Begin with writing a list such as: favourite forms of exercise and food, places in nature and types of music you love. Surround yourself with nurturing and inspiring people, learn something that makes you feel good, look at your thoughts and consider affirmations. Who do you call for help, what does your body require, when and where will you have a holiday, is your house and car and environment clean, fresh and tidy? Once you have got these you can create a vision board to help you and your children to goal set, dream and create what feels great to you. Set mini goals with the children in your home or classroom that instill ‘care’ and reflect on what did and didn’t work. It all begins with you and can be so much fun if you allow it. Do you have a question for JEAN about your child or teenager? Email: jsheehan@AbsoluteEmpowerment.com

Emotions

HOLISTIC KIDS AND PARENTS

are the key to

WORDS RICHARD GIAKOUMIS

M

ost people, especially women, neglect themselves to look after family, friends and others. This in turn jeopordises their health and emotional well being. Looking after others is fine if we look after ourselves in the same way, like we are our own best friend. If you feel like you don’t have time for yourself, are lacking energy, or feel your energy is being drained, feel unappreciated, depressed, sad or stuck, this could be a sign to start focusing on your own self care. It’s important to look after yourself first before you can look after others. If your health and wellbeing is not 100% then how can you give 100% to others. Looking after yourself is a gift to you and everyone around you. A good way to start is through meditation. If you feel you don’t have time for yourself, try to find a little bit of time. Everyone has time for ten minutes of meditation. To receive the

Self Love

most benefit, aim for twenty minutes meditation twice a day. Meditation relieves stress and brings us into the now. Whilst meditating, let emotions bubbling underneath come to the surface. We tend to fear emotions, but they do more harm when we push them down than when we face them. Forgive any situations and people attached to the emotions. Especially forgive yourself for your role. This will allow unconditional love to come in. Another great tool is to take walks alone in nature and be with yourself. Be present. Be aware of your breath and your surroundings. Be in the now, not in what has happened in the past or what’s on your to-do list. Some people put on a façade to show they are strong whereas underneath they are suffering. It’s critical to deal with your emotions and bring true self love into your

life. You can do exercises to learn to love yourself but you must believe wholeheartedly the affirmations like ‘I love and accept myself’. Before you do, you must resolve the emotion behind the reason you do not love and accept yourself, otherwise an affirmation will only be a bandaid measure. The majority of clients I see, are dealing with this very issue of self love. This manifests as emotions like sadness, anger, hurt, resentment or hopelessness. The reasons behind the emotions are all very different but the outcome is that they all end up truly loving and accepting themselves. If you want to dive deeper into emotions and negative karma that you carry, Ascension Therapy aims to clear the emotional baggage that holds you back. A day in the life of an WORDS PAULA GILLESPIE-FOTHERINGHAM

M

y alarm goes off at 6.30am, I do my best to ignore it, however it’s usually followed by my three-year-old excitedly climbing on top of me declaring ‘it’s morning time!!’ I grab a strong coffee and begin the morning dash of pack-ups and Kindy. I hop on my bike and head to the studio. At this time of day I usually feel fortunate that I made the decision 4 years ago to leave the private company, where I worked as Head of Therapy and start my own practice. I’m grateful that I can whiz to work in 20 minutes rather than face a long commute. I climb the 6 flights of stairs into the sun-filled room and by 8.30 I’m sitting at my computer facing what is sometimes a long-line of emails. I reply to the essential ones and plan my day. At 9.45 I wrap up my admin and prepare for my first client of the day. I set the room up to suit the client’s needs, then spend some time reviewing the previous session and remembering significant aspects that

Art Therapist

may be important for today’s session. My 10 o’clock client is a young woman working on overcoming a history of physical and emotional abuse, she has moved away from her country of birth and is determined to make a new life for herself. During the session the woman creates a vibrant red painting, then slashes it with black charcoal. She is visibly moved by the process and we talk about the art a little afterwards. She describes how angry she is with her mother for not protecting her, and how the red represents the anger and the blood connecting them, she talks about the confusion this causes her, to love and hate at the same time, we talk about how and to what extent people can defend themselves. I’m moved by her incredible strength to keep going and push through her challenges. I grab an early lunch at the local health food shop; I always take an hour for lunch as I’m conscious of taking care of myself in this line of work. Many of the adults I work with have

experienced trauma during childhood and are seeking a way to be less burdened by this. With art therapy there is no need for words, no need to explain what happened or even to understand or make sense of it, this understanding tends to follow naturally when the images are made and looked at. I also work with children and young people, many have become ‘shut-off’ and find communication through art much less confrontational than the pressure of talking. I often find that I’m working with children who are selfharming in some way and may have been given a label of ‘challenging’ or ‘disruptive’ in home or educational settings. Once the ‘difficult behaviour’ has a way to be released during art therapy, the way the child interacts with teachers and carers can often improve. As I fall into bed, after a truly rewarding day, I count my blessings as I am always thankful for choosing the path I did. PAULA GILLESPIE-FOTHERINGHAM, IKON Trainer. adelaide-art-therapy.com

CREATIVE BLISS

The

Gift of Creativity

WORDS LISA MOORE

T

he beautiful thing about creativity is that everyone; no matter what age, gender, religion, culture or beliefs, has the ability to create. Creativity, put simply, is the process of using our own imagination to make something. We do it every day. Anything we do can be creative, the way we go about our work, exercise, the way we cook meals, make the kids lunches or even garden. The greatest misconception is that it is about how well we can paint or draw. Creativity is the quality that we bring to any activity that we do. It is our inner approach, our own unique quality that is creative. For a long time I thought that I was not creative. I can draw stick people, and own a glue gun, and at times our house is covered in sparkles and glitter, but it is only in the last few years that I have realised it’s during these times,

when hours pass like they are minutes that the outside stress and worries of everyday life disappear. I feel calmer, that my children are creating freely without structure or guidance, their own “masterpieces”. We are all at that moment engaging in the beauty and power of art therapy at its purest. So what is art therapy? My experience is that it is a gentle but powerful therapy which taps into your unique creativity allowing true expression of inner feelings and thoughts. It is what we are all born ready to do, to be spontaneously creative, for many thousands of years we have utilised this creativity, cavemen depicted many stories through artwork still evident today on cave walls. Sadly in today’s busy lifestyle we have neglected to nurture this primal urge to create and so we have lost the benefits it provides us. Through the

LEARN TO HELP OTHERS AND CHANGE LIVES

process of engaging in art therapy, people often find it far easier to use the art to externalise their problems and then to address them, this non-verbal form of communication is ideal for women and men who tend to have trouble expressing their emotions. Individual sessions will guide you to find meaning through self expression, while taking part in a workshop allows you to bond with other group members and feel less alone in the world of anxiety or depression. I personally believe people are the best healers of themselves, and it is a privilege to witness this therapy in action. Art therapy is suitable for the young, the old and everyone in between! My youngest client is 4 years old and my oldest is 96 years young, neither are “artists” but both create and find their own meaning in every session. lisamoorearttherapy.com.au

MINDFULNESS AND CONTEMPLATION

I stopped meditating. Here’s what happened! WORDS MARY-LOU STEPHENS

T

his is a hard admission to make. After all I wrote a book about how meditation saved my job, changed my life and helped me find a husband. I’ve written columns and blogs about the countless benefits meditation brings. Meditation was a solid part of my life, like clockwork every morning. Even during the times when I was so busy I could only grant this life changing practice ten minutes at the most. So why did I stop? Meditation is like a seedling. We plant it, nurture it and protect it from the things that want to destroy it like pests, bugs and disease. We take care of it and it grows. The roots anchor themselves into the soil. The stems grow stronger. The leaves reach for the sky. Our plant thrives. Meditation needs the same kind of tending. If we don’t nurture it, it will wither. The pests and bugs of other people’s needs and opinions will eat away at it. The crush of time poverty, the carelessness of “if I just skip a couple of days it won’t

matter” will destroy it. In time all that’s left is a small indentation in the dry soil where our beautiful plant used to be. I grew careless. Took it for granted. I was feeling great so what did it matter if I didn’t meditate for a couple of days. I thought the plant would stay healthy without me having to do anything. After all it was strong and I’d been taking care of it for years, surely I was entitled to a bit of a break. Days without meditating turned into weeks. It got to the stage where I’d almost forgotten about it. My morning routine changed and meditation was no longer a part of it. I can’t remember when I stopped hearing the words “You are beautiful. You are loved.” These words came to me during a meditation retreat and stayed with me on a daily basis. They were a blessing; the first thing that came into my mind on waking, the last thought before I slept at night. Until I stopped meditating. That’s when the negative self talk returned. The aches and pains of life manifested in my body. Everything hurt and I was exhausted every day. I dragged myself to work

and collapsed on the couch when I got home. Everything else fell away. One day I woke up and my first thought was “I wish I was dead.” It shocked me out of my complacency. I wished I was dead because I was so tired I couldn’t cope with life, work, other people. I just wanted to be left alone. I just wanted to rest. That morning I walked past the spot where I used to meditate. Without thinking I settled myself down, crossed my legs and began to meditate. Back into the easy rhythm of observing my breath, observing my thoughts and letting them go. As I relaxed into something that used to be as familiar to me as smiling, I realised that here was my place of rest, here was my place of solitude. Meditation gave me exactly what I’d been craving so desperately. A place of nurturing, away from the clamours and demands of the world. A safe place to rest and come back to myself. In the silence I heard those words returning to me. “You are beautiful. You are loved.” Find out more at maryloustephens.com.au

LOOKING FOR A

NEW CAREER WITH MEANING?

With the alarming rising statistics of mental health issues affecting Australians, particularly young people, points to a society out of balance. The current psychological and counselling practices are not meeting the needs of people adequately. It is still arising from a fragmented view of the human condition. We need a new holistic approach that addresses issues of body, soul and spirit; relationships, communication and community.

a new career by developing your accredited practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy, or to enhance a current Allied Health practice or to add to a wide range of professional work, team building and family unity.

David Bohm, Nobel Prize winning physicist said ‘…fragmentation is now very widespread not only throughout society, but also in each individual and this is leading to a general confusion of mind… and interferes with our clarity of perception so seriously as to prevent us from being able to solve most of them.’

Christina says: “From my work in a regional general practice I have become increasingly aware of a soul hunger and spiritual thirst driving people to despair in a materialistic world bereft of meaning. Until the root of this longing is addressed I think mental health issues will only continue to increase.” Holistic Counselling and Psychotherapy attends to the whole person as body, soul and spirit, within as wide a context as possible.

Would you like to be more effective in your contribution to the change towards greater wholeness for yourself, your loved ones, your community and the world? Perhaps this PACFA-accredited two-year postgraduate; or three-year undergraduate course is for you? The skills, perception and self-awareness learnt in the training can be used to establish

40

40.indd 1

The course has arisen from over 30 years of clinical work of Dr Christina Nielsen (Ch. Med.). During this time she has evolved a holistic practice from her studies in Chinese Medicine and Spititual Psychology.

It sees human life as an unfolding process of individuation that responds to the arrow of time forever moving forward towards something. It is the process of forward movement that is the point here not where it is going.

MINDFULNESS AND CONTEMPLATION

The trouble with

A

recent New Your Times article on Couples Therapy concluded that Couples Therapy suffers from a major problem. That is; couples often wait too long before seeking help or intervention, and by that time, one or both of the partners may have decided to call it quits! At what stage in the relationship, should couples seek help or intervention? Woody Allen once said ‘80 per cent of life is just showing up’. I think he got it about 80 per cent right. It’s the same with being in a relationship. One hundred percent of relationship success is showing up. Being present. Being available. Being real! Being there – for oneself and our partner. Plus the fact of course, that we should have a pretty clear idea of what it is we are showing up FOR – before we get involved. There are strong reasons for relationship clarity and relationship education before we contemplate getting involved in one! I’m reminded of the idea that: Men

Couples Therapy marry a woman in the hope that SHE will never change. Women marry a man in the expectation that HE will! Both are going to be disappointed. Expectations weren’t realistic! Neither partner sees clearly who THEY are in relation to the other, OR who the other really is. Both can have a romantically idealised view about what they are realistically capable of themselves and what their partner is capable of in relation to them. Neither is ‘showing up’ for the other. The result is often disillusionment (a broken illusion)! One or both go into hiding, just to get on with the challenges of life. They become more distant from the other. Perhaps avoid or resent having sex with their partner! Get jealous! Have an affair! Just at the time when MORE empathy is needed, explanations for why things are SO challenging often get externalised and explanations for why things aren’t working as well as they might, are sought in the behaviour of the other!

We are guided by five core principles of relationship change: 1. Change the view of the relationship! Let go of the ‘blame game’! 2. Modify dysfunctional behaviour. Alter harming behaviours including addictions. This includes harming or dysfunctional parenting. 3. Decrease emotional avoidance. One, or both fear expressing emotions because they fear being judged! We need to feel secure that our partner will accept our emotions without censure. Sometimes men fear emotional expression more than women. 4. Improve communication. Learn better ways of being heard, and give non-critical feedback to each other. 5. Promote relationship strengths. Part of therapy is to re-surface these strengths and build on them. At what stage in the relationship then, should couples seek help or intervention? Today – right now! Show up. mindfultherapy.com.au

Menopause with Attitude WORDS GAYLYN AITKEN

I

’d like to dedicate this article to all peri, menopausal and post menopausal women. Before you gasp and quickly turn the page in denial to a more exciting article, I dare you to continue reading, maybe you’ll learn something new whatever age or stage you’re at as a woman.

and available anywhere, anytime, you’ll initially feel guilty about your new addiction. It’s called Constructive Rest Position and a woman called Mabel Todd in the early part of the last century developed it. All you need is a quiet space, a yoga mat and belt, a blanket and your poor tired body.

What I’ve noticed since I’ve finished menopause is the way I’ve taken care of myself over my life is now evident. Once blood and electricity slows its flow to reproductive organs, the shift in overall energy is huge! If you’ve spent most of your life in sympathetic (flight/fright/ freeze) nervous system response, your adrenals will be exhausted by now and I feel that it’s one of the main reasons why post menopausal women have a tendency to look dried up, tired and grumpy. There’s no more Juice!

Lay on the mat and folded blanket with your feet flat on the floor hip width apart and a soft belt around your thighs to stop them dropping open. Keep your arms below your shoulders, close your eyes and follow the rhythm of your breath. Stay here for twenty minutes then roll onto your side in foetal position before you sit up.

But I say don’t despair, there is a way to re-juice and it’s so simple, pleasurable

You’re resting, the most important body function besides breathing. Before food and water, your body needs to rest constructively otherwise it’s unable to efficiently nourish, heal and eliminate wastes. You may now feel very relaxed,

even sleepy after you get up, which means you’ve returned home to your body, your gut brain is functioning and your body is once again re-juicing. I’d also like to recommend adding to your life apple cider vinegar in filtered water, fermented foods to replenish your gut bacteria, local seasonal fruits, vegetables and meats free from hormones and have a three-day cleanse with massages and steam treatments

It’s time to make your life meaningful to you instead of trying to fit in with an image that doesn’t reflect who you are and further isolates you from your spirit. Have some fun experimenting with new styles and colours. If you’ve always had your hair a certain way, change it; you can always grow it out if you don’t like it, burn your underwire bra (again) and for heaven’s sake think twice before you reach for those beige Capri pants with matching top! Do whatever you want to do, wear whatever you want to wear and say whatever you feel deeply about. At this time in your life, what have you got to lose?

every six months to freshen up your organs. Don’t get too caught up in what’s right or wrong, good or bad, especially with your diet. Eat not only for your body but also for your soul, keeping balance in all things. I’ve noticed at a certain age a woman starts to become invisible and by the time she’s in her fifties she’s definitely past her sell-by date, the result of a culture based upon excessive

consumerism. At this age women can become anxious about their validity in a society focused on youth, desperately reaching for magic potions, lotions and surgery to maintain an illusion nobody believes. It starts early with the illusion all women are hairless, should always have a flat belly and always wear underwire bras to present an image of perky young breasts despite the pressure it puts on our heart and lungs.

There’s got to be a silver lining to the cloud of growing older and for me it’s the wisdom of experience that can’t be bought or learnt from a book or a workshop. The impatience and passionate superficiality of youth has matured to compassion for all that I am and passion for exploration of all that I have the potential to grow into. Whatever your heart has yearned for in your life now is the time to embrace it, you have no time for yearning, this isn’t a rehearsal, this is your life now! As long as you have breath in your body, you have an opportunity to learn, grow and fulfil your potential as a human being. COOKBOOK:

Surviving Suicide (How I reclaimed my life)

Friendship Food – Delicious Feelgood Food

by Reanne Goes

This is a cookbook created by friends Felicity Philp, Julie Reardon, Kate Owen and Kylie Brasch with 74 recipes free of gluten, yeast, dairy, egg and refined sugar. Six years ago after painful symptoms associated with autoimmunity got the better of Felicity, she eliminated these foods from her diet and felt wonderful! This inspired her to share the recipes she had developed to help others feel good. Felicity teamed up with Julie, Kate and Kylie to create the book, which isn’t just a cookbook but a blueprint to a way of life that can potentially make dreams come true!

On an unforgettable cold morning ten years ago, Reanne Goes awoke to discover her beautiful, darling young brother, Adam, had taken his life in her home. In an instant, this indescribable horror catapulted Reanne into the “hell realms”. In the “prime” of her life, a young, independent and successful woman was brutally stripped of all the things she thought she had for peace, comfort and happiness. “Surviving Suicide” is a stunning and courageous book, whose pages are written with such raw, naked honesty and, at times, gut wrenching torment. The reader is taken on a road quite like no other, where concepts of loss, love, grief, guilt, forgiveness and loneliness (to name a few) are shaken, stirred, and thrown up in a cocktail of such frenzied proportions that, ultimately, one can only marvel at the human spirit’s capacity to heal, and achieve lasting salvation, hope and redemption. This remarkable book is the writer’s firsthand account, and encounter, with suicide; now an urgently emerging epidemic in Australia and the world. Yet finally, this is an unforgettable and inspirational journey, a detailed and miraculous chronicle, and an affirmation that in all of us lies the “stuff” and the means to complete the path, from Tragic to Magic. reclaimyourlife.com.au Review by Andrew Dudek.

NATURAL ANIMAL CARE

Helping our pets naturally WORDS DR HENRY STEPHENSON

W

e all want to do our best for our loved ones, especially our pets, as they are so dependent on our care for their food, health and general wellbeing. Modern conventional medicine sometimes helps our pets in a way that can be very unhelpful in the long term. When a germ or bacteria causes illness in our animals we give antibiotics to kill these invaders. A more long term way to deal with this illness is to ask “Why did a germ attack here?” and “How can I strengthen this being so that we not only treat the illness but also prevent it from happening again?” If we kill off germs that attack our animals we are not encouraging their immune system to be resilient and able to fight off germs. Not only does the immune system not learn to produce antibodies against the infection, but it will now have the added burden of breaking down and eliminating the drug given to do the germ killing. This process over a long period, can be a slippery slope gradually leading to chronic diseases like allergies, arthritis and autoimmune diseases. We do the same thing with pains and inflammation in the body. I often say that

taking anti-inflammatory medicine is a bit like seeing the oil light come on in the car and reacting by removing it. This is not going to put oil in the motor! Pain naturally needs to be eased, but again I ask, “How can we add strength so that the CAUSE of this pain is treated?” If the cause is addressed adequately the oil light will not come on anymore. Strength can be added depending on the condition we are dealing with. Of course giving good natural foods with plenty of raw ingredients is always a good start. The Chinese systems of using different herbs to add strength depending on the presenting pattern is also very useful in animals. This can be supplemented with acupuncture to address the acute problem. However, homeopathy is by far the most powerful treatment that I have come across in

These two photos are the before and after of a cat with long term skin eczema treated with a homeopathic remedy called Nat mur. At the end of treatment she was much happier and more interactive with the family.

many years of alternative medicine work. It works at the deepest level of the energy of the being, and has the huge advantage of strengthening the body’s own defence system instead of just taking away a symptom, so that in the long term the body has intrinsic good health and vitality. For example, I may use a homeopathic medicine to treat a cat for an abscess caused by a cat bite and not only will he heal the abscess, but it will affect the cat so that he no longer feels threatened and so will not want to go and fight other cats anymore and will be friendlier and more relaxed in general. kawanawatersveterinarysurgery.com.au

NATURAL ANIMAL CARE

How can I achieve a better relationship WORDS AMANDA DE WARREN – Leading Animal Communicator and Psychic

w

I

have been an animal communicator for over 20 years and this is probably the most asked question of them all. Like us humans, our pets have different personalities and there is never one sure way of making a great relationship work at its best. One thing for sure is that your pet must respect you and see you as their leader, and if that is not the case then you have very little chance of achieving a great, healthy relationship with them. It’s definitely not cruel to show them who the boss is, and in most cases they appreciate this as it gives them boundaries and security. Our pets need to be balanced and stable, and if they don’t feel this then they may want to take control of the household – something that I have seen many times over. I recently did a reading for a lady whose whole household was held to ransom for 11 years by this very aggressive little dog. The dog ruled the whole house through bringing fear to everyone, including all the other pets. The people of this household were always too afraid to gain control and they let this little dog do whatever it wanted whenever it wanted, therefore

she continued on her path of total control. The principle of us being the boss and our pets seeing it that way applies to most domestic animals, but even the more unusual pets like some kind of

authority around them. That includes pigs, cows and horses. But remember that this authority is definitely not achieved through aggression or angry words as this will have the complete opposite effect of what you are trying to

with my pet?

achieve. The aggression can also cause anxiety in the pet and they can easily become withdrawn and fearful, which then causes other problems. I find that the best way to have a great relationship with your pet, whether

it’s a cat, dog or even a horse, is that they see you as the leader. It shouldn’t just be you either but all the other human members of the family too. Dogs, especially, can pick up weaknesses in us and their instincts tell them that they need to take over as the leader as they don’t want to be led by a weak energy. A calm but strong energy is always the best way to connect with your pet and they must live by your rules just like all the other members in your family. Pets are very intelligent, and without us even saying a word they know what we are thinking and can sense our moods. Owning an animal is one of the most amazing experiences for anyone and having a well-balanced and happy relationship with your pet is even better. What better way to end the day than curled up in front of the fire with a hot chocolate and your favourite pet or pets beside you. You’re happy and so are they. No matter what breed they are or where they have come from in the past, every dog can become what you want them to be. This can sometimes take a little bit of work but it is definitely well

worth it in the end. If you are consistent with your rules and your energy, then your pet will see this and will be happy to blend in with all the other members of the family. I personally have a rescue dog that, in the beginning, was very challenging and it took quite a lot of work. But now he is the most loving and loyal 50kg big boy you could ever meet and everyone who meets him just loves him. Many times in the beginning we would lock horns, but I was never going to give up on him. My intention was never to break his spirit, and I didn’t do this. He just knows who is boss and so does my other big girl who is now 10 years old. We can certainly spoil our beloved animals and make their life easy, as that makes us happy pet owners too, but remember that the most important thing is consistency and what I call “The boss energy”. With this in mind and in practise, you can’t go wrong. Please give all your pets a big hug from me. amandadewarren.com

Happy Hormones! ARE YOU MOODY? BLOATED? STRESSED? DO YOU FEEL YOUR HORMONES ARE OUT OF BALANCE? HAVE YOU ADDRESSED THESE POSSIBLE TRIGGERS? Is your thyroid healthy?

Nutrient absorption and gut function.

Did you know that thyroid disease is becoming increasingly common, particularly in Australia? It could be the result of many factors, such as an overwhelming stress load, chemical overload, increased autoimmune risk, or the depleted nutrient content in the soil our food grows in. Both selenium and iodine are low in many locations of Australian soil, both are important for optimal thyroid function. Both an over and under active thyroid can influence weight, infertility, mood, sleep, libido and menstrual problems. Much of the standard thyroid testing measures TSH, when in fact to truly diagnose a thyroid problem, the tests require more detail. T3 and T4 are the thyroid hormones that your body uses, so it is best to get those checked too.

Your digestive system is like the root system of a tree, when the roots are healthy the tree is healthy. Did you know the digestive system is in fact a nervous system? It is called the Enteric Nervous System. This system has a huge role in the production of your brain’s happy chemicals, not to mention the huge role that it plays in absorbing nutrients for everyday bodily functions. Certain bacterias in the gut have the potential to produce an enzyme called Beta glucuronidase, this enzyme can increase oestrogen re-circulation. This may lead to oestrogen dominance. This imbalance can be linked to painful periods, PCOS, PMS, breast tenderness, irritability, weight gain, depression, skin conditions, fluid retention and lethargy.

Are you sleeping sufficiently? Are you stressed?

Pyroluria is a genetically determined metabolic condition. Those with elevated pyrroles usually have an increased demand for certain nutrients that are essential for neurotransmitter production, such as serotonin and dopamine. These are your happy brain chemicals! Pyrolurics are more likely to suffer with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, autism, alcoholism, strong fatigue, temper outbursts, IBS, joint pain, memory loss or low stress tolerance. A simple urine test can confirm if you have elevated pyrroles.

If you are having difficulty sleeping it could mean that you have a melatonin-cortisol imbalance. Cortisol is the “fight or flight” response hormone, when it is high, melatonin levels can drop. Melatonin is what helps assist proper sleeping patterns. If you are under a lot of stress, your cortisol levels are likely to be out of balance, this then imbalances melatonin. A cortisol problem can throw many of your happy hormones out of balance.

What about Pyroluria?

Do you relate to any of this? We offer a series of thorough pathology tests and naturopathic treatment to get to the root cause of your health concern. We work along side your Doctor so you get the best possible health outcome.
