follow your bliss! now I had actually put a limit on things by saying, ‘It will be a local 28 page quick read magazine’ this was what I thought would be best and manageable but now I know that the magazine knows how many pages it would like to be and who it would like to reach (so to speak) and so I watch it evolve and see how it’s become a part of so many people’s lives. This is a great joy and I’m also acutely aware of what it takes in order for a project to reach a point where it takes on a life of its own. As I look back over all the articles this month I feel incredibly grateful for the immense wisdom shared by all our contributors. What else will unfold?

I had a dream 3.5 years ago to create a quick read magazine that would create a forum (as well as bring a bit of relief from all the doom and gloom that was going on with the start of the GFC) and to help people look at a holistic way of living to include their relationship with themselves, others and the environment.

I didn’t realise the magazine would grow to be so in demand all over Queensland and more and more over Australia. I realise

Chilli

Lemon Delicous Cupcakes

hilli has been part of our diet for thousands of years. The heat in chilli is measured by the amount of capsaicin that is in the fruit by using Scoville Heat Units (SHU), but this should only be used as a guide as seed lineage, climate and soil all affect a chilli’s spiciness. The hottest chilli in the world measures over 2 million SHU’s and is grown here in Australia. Ouch!

Besides being versatile and having a place in almost every cuisine, there are loads of health benefits to adding chilli to your diet on a regular basis. It treats osteoarthritis pain, it reduces both cholesterol and blood sugar levels in the blood, it lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and pulmonary embolism and it helps protect blood fats from damage done by free radicals. It can even protect against some cancers, including prostate cancer. So why not sprinkle some chilli onto your meal – it’s so good for you! www.redhotchillipepper.com.au

Ingredients: 100g of softened unsalted butter ¾ cup of organic coconut palm sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 free range eggs 11/3 cup of organic unbleached selfraising flour ¼ tsp bi-carb soda ½ cup of milk Juice of one lemon Zest of 2 lemons Frosting: 250g tub of mascarpone cheese Zest of 1 lemon 1 /3 cup of thickened cream How to Create and Bake: Preheat oven to 180 degrees, line a 12 hole muffin pan with paper cases.

Using an electric beater cream the butter, sugar and vanilla extract until light and creamy Add eggs one at a time, mix well (note mixture will be quite runny don’t worry it will all come together.)

Sift flour and bi-carb together then fold through in two batches with the milk.

Add lemon zest and the juice of 1 lemon, combine well.

Divide mixture into the paper cases and bake in a moderate oven for 20 minutes or until cakes spring back.

Remove from oven to cool before decorating.

Frosting: Place mascarpone cheese in a bowl with the cream and lemon zest and mix well using electric beater.

Spoon into piping bag and decorate the cooled cakes.

Make Raw not War –This is Living!

I

t was a beautiful sunny morning when I took a trip to Maleny to have a ‘raw experience’ at the new cafe called ‘Raw and Peace’ in Coral St. The sunny deck nestled in the leafy Hinterlands was very inviting as were the delicious treats in the cabinet when I first arrived!

Damion and Ames the creators/ owners greeted me with a big smile and were excited to share their passion for raw cuisine. Damion served me a raw, cold pressed organic coffee made on nut milk which was a great way to kick start the morning (I don’t usually drink coffee but this was quite different and a more wholesome way of having this beverage). Then Ames whipped up some magic in the kitchen and before I knew it she had plated up waffles, with a

dollop of cream, strawberries and a touch of maple syrup (all raw!!)

While I was taking in the surroundings and enjoying my breakfast, I was also able to try the much touted Buchi Kombucha drink which is new to Australia (and created by Jason Lantz).

Ames and Damion said they serve and drink a lot of this organic, living, probiotic sparkling drink themselves, as it can facilitate digestion which is great support when consuming a lot of raw food.

Ames is no stranger to living food and creative cooking (she was previously a traditional cook) and has also used raw foods for her healing journey over the years. Ames is well known after having a regular presence at Northey Street Markets in Brisbane but this year it was time for a tree change and

a great opportunity to bring her raw cafe dream into fruition. She says it brings her great joy ‘uncooking for people’ and adapting traditional cooked recipes (that are the big favourites) and then creating a raw version of them that create a real impression!

Trust Yourself and Follow Truth

T

his always takes me back to the words – be in service for your purpose, whatever that may be to you and to live in the moment, in the truth. I however, just like many of us, do not always do this.

Around my business I make mistakes – I will sit and interview a potential employee and somewhere all of a sudden or even sometimes ‘it’ (the feeling, the words), are there from the start and the knowing that this person, isn’t for me.

But what do I do? Well sometimes, even though I have the grace of this

information, I will still employ them and then start the journey; the cost of NOT facing what I saw, not doing what I knew I should have and NOT listening to me.

Yes, I then take the path of having to face what I didn’t in the interview (the TRUTH). I have not acted through truth and for this, the actions or non-actions of what I know, I must pay.

As we know, sometimes we pay with money, sometimes we pay for the emotional roller-coaster that we then go on, (when we knew NOT to go against our truth) but never the less, we then must face ourselves over the next days, weeks, months and sometimes years. In the end, if you are willing to face yourself and all that goes with this, you will feel success – truth.

I can only write from my experience and what I know. I feel that as humans we are so blessed to be able to reason, feel and forgive ourselves and others for not being perfect and we can make adjustments and changes along the way. I always feel grace in knowing that we have this ability to love and this love will always bring us success – we just need to

Success comes with true love – this however needs to be managed – we need to be aware – and look at our intent by asking, ‘What am I going to this course for?’, ‘What am I looking for in this book?’. Part of the human journey can be distracting ourselves from having to face the silence but in the end, it still, for me, comes back to, being able to know why we are ‘doing the doing’; doing the actions or ‘non actions’. But I always feel a peace run through my body, just knowing that if I would like to, just by facing the truth, (yes there are prices to pay for this) and living through the love of this universe, I will feel success all around me. To always be grateful that we have the knowing – and that we are lovethis is success. To reason, to be aware, to feel around us, to face fear front on and to accept that there are many roads, many different paths and to not judge ourselves is a very big step on the road to success – to just love.

rin McAtee is not your average psychologist! Not only is she a mother of two, she is also the managing owner and the visionary behind the well known Circle Wellness Clinics (CWC) on the Sunshine Coast. In fact, the clinics have been so widely embraced by the community that you may just find a centre in every town before too long…

I had the pleasure of talking with Erin this month about her success in business and I have to say she is a very centred and genuine person who manages to find the balance between being and doing. As we were talking, I also realised how similar our backgrounds were (we went to the same high school, we both have psychology backgrounds and both have a passion for holistic health and seeing the whole person not just treating the symptoms). What was also evident was Erin’s unique vision and gifts as a practitioner-manager which has meant she has attracted a talented multi disciplinary team to provide a cutting edge service.

Erin had the vision about three years ago to establish the Circle Wellness Clinics as a way of offering the

“I was down the beach with my kids in September 2009 and the vision struck me while on the water’s edge. At that time, I had been practising in and managing a natural therapies clinic at Noosaville for about 18 months and I thought, ‘how can this get even better?’ I wanted to expand our team of talented practitioners to other areas of the Sunshine Coast and offer the community a brand new level of safe, professional and collaborative natural therapies all under one roof,” she said.

In December 2009 Erin created the brand of ‘Circle Wellness Clinic’ to encompass that holistic view. From the time she had the vision on the beach, things evolved very quickly and within three months she was building the second clinic at Peregian Beach.

“For myself, I wanted a new challenge professionally, and for the community, I wanted increased awareness of and access to holistic health options,” she said.

Erin is a natural born leader and she has much wisdom to share about her gifts as a manager.

“I aim to create a culture of

inclusiveness, while respecting that CWC is a collection of individual businesses.

Communication is the key. CWC is a place where practitioners can be themselves in an environment of support and collaboration.”

Erin used the analogy of needing to be like bamboo in business. She said bamboo is one of the strongest building materials but it’s also flexible.

My family is my greatest love and priority, however I also feel good about modelling to my children that it’s important to work and serve your community.

She commented that having the strength and flexibility in business is very much a way of being. There can be challenges at times with managing a team of independent practitioners but she said having a professional and competent team means that any issues that arise can be worked through and resolved. “I do feel blessed to work with a group of such aware, sensitive and professional people.

Over time, the team has become more amazing, collectively, than I could have imagined.”

Erin believes it’s all about finding the balance and being prepared to grow. She also said it’s important for her to be a good example and walk her talk.

“My family is my greatest love and priority, however I also feel good about modelling to my children that it’s important to work and serve your community. I’ve always worked part time while my children are young, so that I get a sense of balance across the working week, and I’m lucky enough to have a job that allows me the flexibility to work in with my family’s schedule where possible.

At busy times though, this does mean some late nights or early mornings on the laptop!”

She said being involved in a creative project and managing people are both massive sources of learning and growth.

Grace “I have learned to trust my instincts, trust in the overall vision and trust that life is essentially supportive.” She mentioned that the team has grown to include an even more comprehensive range of services that encompass mind, body and spirit. About Erin: Q: What are your favourite things to do in your spare time?

A: I love being active, and regularly do yoga and boxing classes.

A: I love simple pleasures such as being in my home with my family, cooking a great meal, hanging at the park or the beach with my kids (I have two daughters aged 4 and 7), and spending time with friends.

What Does Success Mean to You?

or most people, success is a monetary value. It’s about how much money is in the bank or the numbers on a profit and loss statement.

What if success in business is about something else? What if it isn’t just about making a profit? What if there is a greater target for your business and for you?

And what if the money shows up when you are generating and creating the energy of what you know is possible with your business? From the JOY of you.

Money follows JOY! For me, business is about changing the world. I am just one person from Australia who wishes to make a difference in the world. If I had decided this wasn’t possible, I would never have created the position of worldwide coordinator of Access Consciousness.

Every person can contribute and make a difference. You do, every day.

What about you? What does success mean to you? I had a phone call from a lady one day who wished to thank me.

She told me that she had been married for about 12 years and had 6 kids and her husband beat her up every day.

She had one of our magnets “Imagine what you would do if you knew you could not fail,” on her fridge for the past six months and she had just left her husband and was creating a different life.

That was a $5 magnet.

If I had calibrated my success based on a $5 sale it would not have meant much. But to me I was a success. This lady’s whole life had changed – including her kids – and who knows what else occurred.

I recently made the choice to close a company down. In this reality that is a failure. That is not what has occurred. I have allowed the awareness to show me what is possible and I’m willing to ask questions and to receive everything. If I went to the conclusion of the company is shutting down so I am a failure, then I would shut off my capacity to receive, my capacity to recognise when something greater can show up. If you create space, then you allow money and possibilities to show up. If you go to conclusion, you kill the energy of any future possibilities.

What if you could change the world by who you ‘be’ and what you are willing to receive? What if that was the success you were refusing to be?

What if you could never lose – what if everything became greater? It’s just a choice. What if success was a great adventure?

Demartini: Breaking through the Barriers

I

magine being told you would never be able to read and write and you would never amount to anything? That is what John Demartini was told at the tender age of seven by his grade one teacher and he was also given the diagnosis of ‘dyslexia’.

Not surprisingly he found little opportunities through his schooling experience to learn and understand his true gifts and so he left school at 14 years of age. He also left home to live on the streets for about three years and nearly died from his heavy drug use and reckless lifestyle.

It wasn’t until he met American health food guru/naturopath Paul Bragg when he was 17 years old that he was inspired to return to school, deciding to not let his ‘learning disability’ get in his way. John went on to graduate from college and practice as a chiropractor. He continued to educate himself and he became very well read in a wide range of topics including astronomy, psychology and metaphysics.

If they access what that highest value is and set goals that are congruent, they have the highest probability of acting upon it and achieving greatness. Many people subordinate to others and inject values and objectives that aren’t really theirs and set themselves up for self defeat.”

Another observation John made was most people are addicted to fantasies which means they live outside their own values. John’s ‘breakthrough weekends’ help people address and solve these issues and see the side of themselves they are

ignoring. John said, “When we are congruent we give ourselves permission to be authentic, original, creative and empowered.

The magnificence of the way it truly is far greater than the fantasy we keep imposing on our lives. The true you is worthy of love, the true you is original and creative and a genius that’s inspired.

And that’s what’s possible.”

John revealed there isn’t anything else he’d rather be doing each weekend than watch people’s lives transform.

“No matter what you’ve been through, no matter what you’re going through, that’s not what counts. It’s your perceptions of it, your decisions around it and what action you take from it. I’ve worked with disadvantaged kids, people who have been beaten and raped and every imaginable thing that people could go through that would be traumatic and I have seen how we can turn that into opportunity.”

external factors and these inner feelings are all messages reflecting to you how you are using or not using, the powerful energy we all have access to, as a creative force in life.

Blaming, finding excuses, and living with limitations are all methods that we have used to convince ourselves of our lack of success. It’s time to change how you see yourself and move into the space of achieving your true potential, supported by infinite possibilities.

Achieving in the world is a reward for being who you are. Some say success comes with a hefty price, well maybe it does if you are seeing success as something outside of you. Success is a dream come true!

oday there is so much written about what success is. What if we saw the every day experiences as successful? What if success was having a dream and making it come true?

Recently I was nominated in the Sunshine Coast Womens Network Business Award and have become a finalist. It was not until I had to write the application did I suddenly self realize that I was a success – not to others but to myself. You see from 5 years old I had a dream and a secret and that was to create an educational system to empower children and adults to see their own gift and potentiality using metaphysical techniques, crystals, gridding and quantum physics. I wanted these techniques in everyday life and in main stream schools. My secret was that I could see the potential in people by intuitive sight through seeing their anatomy and physiology and how emotions locked in to the body. The award application took me on a journey of self discovery.

From birth I have always been able to connect with the metaphysical. Being

from the Middle East this was considered ‘evil’ and I was outcast. I experienced all sorts of abuse as a child. Holding the secret back of my Medical Intuitive gift took its toll especially after my Mother died on Christmas day when I was 16.

That is when I decided to go to an acceptable job; Nursing so I could understand what I was seeing and how to integrate the physical and metaphysical.

More life experiences included being raped, homeless, stalked and depression with suicidal thoughts. Each day and each moment was a journey where I repeated an affirmation from childhood ‘good/god comes from bad’. I just could

not see that my success was that I was dealing with these by myself. I was accomplishing so much but thought success was something outside of me. It was the act of the award that showed me I was a winner within my own world as I saw myself and that I can do anything if I put my mind to it and it is how I see myself not how others see me.

By the way my childhood dream came true. We now educate the metaphysical in schools, corporations and main stream globally. We are all a success on some level but you need to recognise it in your self and reward your self for that accomplishment, achievement and victory.

Elements of Success

efining success is a little like a fingerprint. Everyone’s definition is different, and there are no two exactly alike. Success, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

For some success is defined by acquisitions, but I believe it’s more about how the way we live ‘feels’. For me, it’s about living with passion and purpose; having a sense that I am making a difference in some way; and being free to make choices about how I live and love.

It’s less about what I do, and more about how I do it. Some days I ‘do it’ better than others.

As human beings we are multidimensional. It’s interesting to ponder how success can be measured across various elements of our lives; personally,

spiritually and in our vocations. In its simplest terms, I evaluate success based on personal freedom, spiritual connection, and making a meaningful contribution.

Personal freedom. A happy personal life is instrumental to success. Without it, the joys of success in other areas of our lives can be tinged with sadness and regret. Prioritising time, without feeling pressured, for holidays, friends, my husband, family and personal me time, all play a part, and are essential elements to a successful life.

Spiritual connection. Without a spiritual connection, life can seem meaningless. Connecting to God, or source, provides a sense of purpose, and nurtures our intuition. Staying tuned into that ever present voice provides reassurance and guidance that how we are spending out time is for the best, and that we are staying on purpose, in all areas of our lives.

Meaningful work. Making a difference and using my gifts and talents is fundamental to success for me.

Is Being You More Powerful than Perfection?

received an email in my inbox yesterday with the joyful opening line “There’s nothing worse than making an embarrassing mistake when you’re ‘on stage.’”

“Embarrassing” and “mistake” are some of the words that keep public speaking ranked as the number one fear in the world. Yet we all spend time in front of audiences, be it a small presentation at the office or a toast at a wedding.

What would it take for those moments to be easier, and dare I suggest,

even joyful? How about giving up perfection as the goal you are shooting for?

A classically trained actress and singer, I bought the idea at a very young age that perfection was what would create success. Yet when I moved to New York I saw two kinds of high caliber performers on Broadway, and the effect they had on me in the audience were radically different. There were excellent performers who were nearing technical perfection and who I envied and admired. Then there were riveting performers who were somehow them in every role they approached and who I was inspired and moved by.

Some people call this the “it” factor claiming it cannot be taught or called upon. I call it the willingness to be you in front of others. And do you know what?

Having now worked with thousands of people on stages around the world, I know that anyone can achieve it.

What is required is a willingness to let go of judgment of you, let down your barriers and learn to be present with the audience. That may be easier said then

done but it is something you can learn.

Once you start enjoying being in your own skin, it doesn’t matter if you forget a line, mess up the order of your slides, or say the wrong thing. You can actually bring the audience with you on the journey to wherever you are going.

What is required is a willingness to let go of judgment of you

The next time you find yourself in front of a group of people and feel yourself getting nervous or worrying about messing up, try this. Take a deep breath and say “hey, perfection is an interesting point of view.” Be kind to yourself. Ask a question. Laugh a bit. And notice the connection it creates.

Rewire for Success

Mahatma Gandhi The latest neuroscience confirms that our hardwired subconscious beliefs and not our genes direct more than 95% of our behavioural and biological outcomes.

More specifically, it’s how we perceive our environment, which creates our beliefs.

So if we wish to take control of our lives in a positive way, we first need to change the underlying subconscious programming that created it.

I

f you want to truly become successful, you have to drop the BS and understand what success really is; as it relates to the truest you.

At age 16, I was not successful with girls. A skinny kid, I joined the gym to create the perfect body. This physical success brought good health, moments of fleeting happiness and admiring glances from the opposite sex.

Having a great physical appearance was not permanent or completely fulfilling, so I next chose to create financial success by making more and more money. Money brought toys, moments of fleeting happiness, and admiring glances from the opposite sex.

Having more money was not permanently or completely fulfilling, so I chose to sow into relationships. This love addiction was also unfulfilling, as I sometimes found that I was so “into” the other person that the real me disappeared.

As I navigated past physical success (muscles that grew then withered), material success (money that rose then fell) and relationship success (more rise

and fall), I discovered that there were many versions of success, truths and truer truths. Beyond that, I ultimately discovered the truest truth of all.

Going somewhere over the rainbow, beyond the various truths, whether you see seven colours or seven million, you will eventually discover that you can only see a rainbow if there is a single source of light. This is the truest truth: above all shades of BS truths and truer truths.

Beyond the physical, material and relational lies the spiritual: without it, the others are nothing. Your success will be hollow or short-lived if you overlook the eternal fourth dimension or the intransient fifth element that combines or surrounds all others.

To inject some eternal spiritual success into your physicality, bring mindfulness into your daily activities: meditation does not mean always sitting still. You can meditate whilst eating, dancing, walking, running or doing yoga.

You can enjoy a more successful relationship by bringing a spiritual goal to your union: instead of each partner merely focusing on making the other

partner happy, aim to have a combined goal that brings happiness to others as well.

Bring spiritual success into your material world by having a greater purpose for your wealth. Tithing, or giving back to the community or the world is a fundamental financial principle in many sacred traditions and has been taught for thousands of years because it works on financial and spiritual levels.

Just as turning up the light source makes for richer colours in the rainbow, more spiritual enlightenment in your life will make all of your success goals clearer, bolder, richer and stronger.

Shining the light on Kahuna

W

hen they told me that my project this month was to experience a Kahuna massage, I immediately had visions of massive Polynesian bare-chested men in grass skirts – some thumping religiously on drums with others walking on my back! I can’t tell you of my relief when Scott Murray opened the door to his lovely home in the leafy outskirts of Noosa (minus the grass skirt and drums and wearing plain clothes). Scott is a truly gentle man who, I was soon to find out, was both gifted and dedicated to improving the lot of his fellow humans.

While I filled out the usual client intake form we talked about my ailments (too many to list after decades in the construction industry and even longer riding motorbikes) and what Kahuna is all about. Originating in Hawaii as part of

a right of passage, it has served those islanders for centuries. Traditionally in ancient Hawaiian Lomi Lomi was practiced in four contexts: 1. As a healing practice of native healers – kahuna lā‘au lapa‘au (healers) and kahuna hāhā (diagnosticians) 2. As a luxury and an aid to digestion, especially by the ruling chiefs (ali‘i) 3. As restorative massage within the family 4. By ‘ōlohe lua (masters of the Hawaiian martial arts) Although the term Kahuna Lomi Lomi is widely used in contemporary writings, traditionally the people who performed Lomi Lomi were called ka po ‘e lomilomi (the massage people) or kanaka Lomi (massage person). The word kauka is the Hawaiian version of doctor.

Like many endeavours in old Hawaii, Lomi Lomi was conducted with prayer and intention.

I had heard that Kahuna was usually performed on the naked body so you may understand my relief when, as I walked into the warm and inviting treatment room, Scott uttered the words,

“disrobe to whatever you’re comfortable with”. The next 90 minutes were the most relaxing I think I have ever experienced.

While rolling, rubbing and squeezing out the bad stuff, it envelopes you into a sort of euphoric trance. When I arose from the massage table more than an hour and a half later, I was a little wobbly on my feet. That’s right, I felt so relaxed I almost felt a bit tipsy. How relaxed is that? Very, very relaxed!

So how does Kahuna measure up as a restorative, healing process? Well I slept very soundly that night, which I never do and the next day I felt full of beans, even my troublesome busted, arthritical leg was happy to greet the day. Scott calls his business ‘Body Bliss Massage’ and said before we started that he hoped I would feel ‘blissed’ after the treatment. I have to say I did! I recommend to prospective clients to plan to do nothing else for the day after you have the big Kahuna, as your mind and body just totally crank down!

A Horse Rescuer’s Creed

I shall be a believer of all that is good in people and of all that is deserving in animals. I shall plead for their lives, campaign for their safety and uphold their right to a natural death.

I shall seek out the injured and the maimed, the unloved, and the abandoned and tend to them in their last day.” (Susan M. Pearson) This is the creed of Charlie’s Angels Horse Rescue and when I read Susan M. Pearson’s words I knew immediately that it perfectly encapsulated our philosophy.

I shall be a believer of all that is good in people and of all that is deserving in animals.

The first half of that sentence can be the most challenging for anyone working in animal welfare. So often, what we see is the darkest parts of human behaviour: the neglect, cruelty, arrogance, and the use of animals for monetary gain without concern for their innate value or sentience. But we also see the amazing

people who rescue animals simply because they cannot turn away. Or who tend and care for an aged animal simply because they love them and it is the right thing to do—to honour an animal’s spirit and journey right to then end, just as we hope someone will one day do for us.

I shall plead for their lives, campaign for their safety and uphold their right to a natural death.

Many people still don’t realise that Australia has a booming horse meat industry. Australia slaughters horses both for human consumption and for other uses, primarily pet food. There are two slaughterhouses in Australia that kill for human consumption, one at Caboolture in Queensland and one at Peterborough in South Australia. We also have 33 licensed knackeries in Australia that slaughter for other uses. Approximately a third of our horses come from ‘dogger sales’, where hundreds of horses line up in pens with numbers on their rumps and

auctioned off to the highest bidder, who is usually ‘the dogger’, who takes them to kill for pet food.

We tend to specialise in horses that are most vulnerable and at risk of misuse and slaughter, regardless of what the market says they are ‘worth’.

We take aged horses, pregnant mares, foals, ex racehorses, injured horses, oneeyed horses and those who have been psychologically damaged by people.

We are a small but dedicated charity that hopes that just by doing what we do, we bring each horse’s unique story to the world and shine a light on a better way of respecting all forms of life.

Charlie’s Angels Horse Rescue Inc is a not for profit organisation whose purpose is to rehabilitate abused, neglected and abandoned horses in order to improve their lives. The service also finds ‘Forever homes’ for these horses through its adoption scheme.

his month, Tanya Arnold ventures to the Sunshine Coast Dog Obedience Club to interview two Staffies, Jimmy and Angus, who open their hearts to share the successful story of their late brother, Jack, an Australian Obedience Superstar.

Q: Angus, as younger brother of an Australian Obedience Champion, did this impact your life in any way?

A: At one point I thought that perhaps I should strive for the same goals, but I had to be honest with myself.

I didn’t find it fulfilling. Our mother, Jeanne, has never put any pressure on me to train and she understands that I am

A: Jack had amazing focus. In 2005, he came second in the championships at the Royal National Agricultural Show.

That competition is extremely difficult as there are so many distractions. Jack was always very focussed, even with all the people, smells and animals, he still managed to pull off second place. Not only that, we’re working dogs. Usually it’s the Border Collies, German shepherds, or Golden Retrievers who win. Jack was by far the underdog. I think Jack’s approach very much reflects the words of Mario Andretti, “Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal – a commitment to excellence – that will enable you to attain the success you seek.”

A: As I am still a pup, I am still working out what it is I want to become when I grow up. My mum is so proud of Jack’s accomplishments. I hope one day to make her as proud of me as she is of him. I have started going along to classes and my teacher tells mum, that I am by far the star of the class. So far I have enjoyed the training. It is an extra bonus that I get to spend more quality time with my mum. I just love her. Mum hides toys all over our home and asks me to go and find them. It is so much fun, plus I get a reward for my efforts as well. Obedience training is something I am definitely keen on pursuing further. I may become a champion one day, only time will tell.

Working With and Learning From Our Beloved Pets!

S

uccess can mean many things to many people; social status, achievement of certain goals and the opposite of failure. How each individual measures success is personal and rewarding. “The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure” – Sven Goran Eriksson.

Over the years I have set many goals and would like to think I have achieved most of them. One that comes to mind is working with Max, the 8 year old Blue Heeler who came to live with us in 2007.

He was a dog who stood out from most I had worked with over the years. He had a strong personality and a point to prove.

Not only was he ‘human aggressive’ and

‘dog aggressive’, he was toy obsessed, food obsessed and very stressed.

My goal was not to fight with Max or force him to feel compromised in any way but in time to earn his trust and respect.

Earning trust and respect from a dog can sometimes be hard work. Especially if the dog believes it can make better decisions than you. The key to earning that trust and respect is not to use force, fear, bribery or commands. No matter what questions they throw at you, being prepared with calm, kind and consistent answers shows the dog you are worthy of their trust and respect.

If your dog/s had a meeting – who would you like them to elect to make the decisions?

Over time Max had many questions to ask, “what are you going to do if I growl at you, pull on the lead, bark in the car, attack one of the dogs, urinate in the house, pace the floors, guard the toys or chase the birds” and there was no way you could give him a brush! My desire and commitment to reach my goal would eventually lead to success and

unbeknownst to me at the time, Max became my teacher too.

There were times I felt frustrated and inadequate but I had a goal to achieve and a dog to relieve of his anxiety and obsessive compulsive behaviours.

Max did eventually learn to trust and let go of his obsessions (he also curbed his aggression). He even enjoyed a snooze in the sun or in front of the fire, he walked calmly on the lead, didn’t bark in the car or urinate in the house, loved a brush and I have fond memories of cuddles and kisses – I called them ‘loveins’.Unfortunately in 2011 we lost Max to a heart condition. He was a member of our family and there are times when we still laugh and shed the odd tear when we talk about him. Birth By Choice, Not By Chance

T

here is a fascinating saying, “women often labour in the same way that they live.”

How do you respond to challenges or crisis? Birth is a natural event that stretches us to our limits, not a problem that needs fixing. However, many of us have been conditioned otherwise and our body’s stress response may be instinctively activated. This is especially true when we are fearful or feeling unsafe.

It all goes back to our beliefs. For example, no amount of encouragement during labour can help a woman who does not believe at her core that she is able to give birth normally and she does not require any drugs or anesthesia to do so.

Some women believe things happen to them and they are powerless to do anything, (not an empowering mindset for life or birthing!) while others take control.

Victims may want to be rescued: “Henry - do something!” The partner

often feels helpless, unable to take away the pain and reacts by lashing out at staff or demanding pain relief. Yet they would be far more helpful in just staying with the process, encouraging their partner to relax, welcoming each contraction and simply loving the woman throughout the entire birth.

Being fixed is not empowering but through love and support, the woman can find the inner resources to actively birth her baby herself- the greatest gift that can transform her forever.

A study by Peterson and Mehl showed we are 95% predictable creatures, displaying signs that lead to a smooth normal birth vs having complications.

Warning signs included passivity, dependence, limiting beliefs, self image of weakness, relationship conflict, carrying an unwanted child and unresolved fears.

Normal births followed being active, self reliant, ability to accept support from others, loving relationships, self image of strength, a wanted child, internal control of own life and resolved fears prior to birth.

We all run patterns in our lives; it’s just a matter of becoming conscious of them before they show up as complications. We have the power of choice!

How you respond to labour will have a large impact on how well labour progresses and the amount of pain or discomfort you feel.

Preparing for a natural birth doesn’t guarantee you will labour without medication or complications, but not preparing almost always guarantees you will.

Each woman must look inside and be as honest with herself as possible.

From that place she is able to recognise patterns, work through her fears and make conscious birth choices.

So go forth and co-create your own adventure!

Success With Each Step!

I

used to have a very fixed opinion about success. I knew what it looked like, how it would arrive and, once I obtained it, I knew my life would be perfect. My plan was to become famous. I studied acting and performed on stage and screen.

Unfortunately I wasn’t particularly good at it and I didn’t like hanging out with other actors. They were all completely self-absorbed. So instead I decided I would become a famous singer/ songwriter. I played in bands, I toured, I wrote songs, I recorded. I was even offered a recording contract. But bands break up and recording contracts disappear. When all was done and dusted

I didn’t have the energy or desire to keep going.

Then along came radio. It was the perfect combination of acting and music.

After years of banging my head against closed doors, all the doors swung open. It was a miracle. It was meant to be.

I landed my dream job. Success at last.

And here’s the thing about having a fixed opinion of success; the goal posts shift, life is fluid, everything changes. In other words my dream job turned out to have warts. I did discover, after much resistance and then acceptance, that I could still love it, warts and all, but it no longer fulfilled my definition of success.

Perhaps a successful relationship would do the trick. I achieved the required standard by getting married.

But, you guessed it, I found out there is no such thing as the promised happyever-after. My job might have had warts but my marriage had bunions. However once again, after much resistance and then acceptance, I learned to love it, bunions and all.

Years ago I started writing. A quiet pursuit, never in the spotlight, unlike my

other attempts at fame. Most people wouldn’t think I was a success because I wasn’t published. But my definition of success had changed by the time I took up the pen.

Finishing eight drafts of my novel and finally completing my meditation memoir after six years, these were successes to me. I sent them out into the world and they returned with kind suggestions and notes about revisions, most of which I took on board. Each small compliment was another success. I did the work and sent my manuscripts out again. A process of growth and refinement.

And now, success. My meditation memoir will be published by Pan Macmillan next year. A cause for celebration. But I know this is not the end. This is just another step on the journey. Vedic Astrology

n September, relationships could be challenging for much of the month, with Saturn and Mars joined in Libra; the sign of personal relationships and romance. Mars and Saturn are energies that make us personally strong, and are more self protective in nature. They are also opposite each other. Mars rules the “fight response”. Saturn rules the “flight response”.

Essentially, we may be facing a lot of inner conflict, with some of that leaking into our relationships with others, especially romantic partners.

We have to be careful not fighting with or fleeing from them, as we look to strengthen ourselves. Also remember, they will be going through similar inner conflicts.

The main lunation themes (Full and New Moons) in September revolve around organising outer circumstances and relaxing into fullness beyond the details of the world.

New Moon September 15 A new cycle of Virgo begins as the Sun and Moon come together, actually at

the very last degree of Leo. For the next 30 days there will be a strong focus on organising our environment and refining all the details in our world toward a deeper state of purity and precision. Now is a great time to throw out the old and embrace the new, in your living environment and routines. Mercury will be exalted in Virgo from September 1320, bringing skill and precision to this organizing work. The placement of Venus and Mercury on the New Moon shows ease and cooperation in achieving these goals for the next 30 days. The New Moon happens in Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra, which is ruled by the Sun. It has to do with official business, such as marriage or legal contracts.

Full Moon September 29 A deep feeling of emotional surrender and unity will fill our hearts with this Full Moon in Pisces. This Full Moon provides contrast to the New Moon cycle that began two weeks ago, with the Virgo New Moon.
