September arrives, I notice wild flowers by the side of the roads, the fresh, crisp air and everything looks and feels alive. Have you ever taken a moment out to gaze into a spring flower? He blew us away with a string of number one albums and captivated us with his distinctive ‘cruisey’ vocals, signature acoustic sound and deep, reflective lyrics. But even though Pete’s a mega star and has sold over a million albums, he is a humble man who takes success in his stride. I was fortunate to speak with Pete on the ‘eve’ of the release of his new album ‘Blue Sky Blue’…. In fact, I spoke with him while he was on the road (driving his Combie around Byron Bay) and found out why he has a bit of a spring in his step….. After a three and half year hiatus, Pete has come back with a jaw dropping debut single ‘Always a winner’ and it’s a real shift from his earlier style of music…he’s clearly reinvented himself but his music still comes from a place of honesty. This time he has gone for an upbeat, electric sound…and even managed to sneak a few Bruce Lee moves into his new film clip… so we see a different side of him but it still sounds like the Pete we all know and love!

“The time off was great! I’ve had a lot of down time and a lot of surfing time for the last few years. Just surfing and spending time with my boys was great and I spent 18 months writing the album. I wanted to make it positive and powerful and something that people can connect with,” he says. Pete believes the album is reflective of being in a different place in his life. He has had time to process his divorce and spend time with his two boys, Charlie (7) and Pedro (4). “I’m enjoying life not being so hectic. I’m in a good head space and I want that to come out in the songs. ‘Always a winner’ is reflective of the album; it’s all electric and it was a definite decision to move away from the laid back acoustic songs and do something different.” Pete has written the album with ease and grace. He says there wasn’t any pressure to get the album out in a hurry and the songs came to him at their own time and pace.
With the world of technology he was able to do some of the production of the album in Los Angeles via the internet. “Trying to stay at a high level of motivation is hard but I’ve always been a driven person. I have a five album deal with Sony and this is something I can do for the rest of my life. But you need to constantly change your goals to keep your motivation up. That pushes you- if you don’t change your goals and you’re not achieving, then your motivation drops off.” Taking time out and finding balance in life is also a priority for Pete. Getting in the ocean is a ritual and some of his favourite places to surf in the world are at Byron Bay in particular Wategos beach. (He also previously lived in Eureka in the Byron Bay Hinterlands where he wrote his third album). Pete prefers to live by the water in Byron these days and feels he has a blessed life. “A lot of artists move out here to Byron. I really struggle going to the city. I get out
of there as fast as I can. Byron Bay is an amazing place and one of the healthiest places to be, the food is healthy, organic and fresh. Everyone loves their lifestyleit’s all about being outdoors and being healthy and having a good time. They aren’t trying to get a high paid job and live in mansions. It’s really about a coastal lifestyle and that’s what attracts me to it.” For someone who didn’t aspire to be a singer/songwriter he’s achieved some amazing things. As a young man Pete attended St Joseph’s Nudgee College in Brisbane and was interested in pursuing a career in rugby but a knee injury got in the way of this path and he studied natural medicine instead. Eventually he realised that he had musical talent and liked the idea of travelling and meeting new people rather than being restricted to working in a clinic. The rest of course is history…. “I’ve never done things for money. The lifestyle comes first and you’ve got to be happy. Even when I played rugby it was all about sport for me, when I did natural medicine I thought that would be a good job and I could also work with sporting injuries etc. I wasn’t looking at being a billionaire. There are a lot of rich people in the world who aren’t happy. They seem to want more and more. I’m happy with very few things. It’s a good way to be.” So what helps keep Pete grounded and what has helped him deal with fame? “I’ve had a good upbringing. I grew up in a country town, I have great friends and family. I had some stress later in life and when you’re a bit older you can handle success better. A lot of people find their egos get ahead of them and then they can get themselves in trouble. When I was young Mum and Dad sat me down and talked to me about bragging. They said if you have to brag then you have to tell people you’re good so you must not really feel good about yourself,” he says. Talking to Pete is like listening to his music- he’s real, genuine and talks freely about his feelings and views on life. “I feel a bit nervous about the new albumbecause it’s a change. It’s something I’ve
done differently.” He says you have to believe in yourself and sometimes it’s hard but you have to keep putting your work out there and do what feels right. “Once you try and please other people
you run into trouble. I push myself to keep the change going musically and work on keeping myself happy. Whatever I feel is the right thing at the time for me… that will be what I do.”

2. Clean Out the Cupboards What beliefs are hiding at the back of the cupboard, taking up space and collecting dust? Are they ‘hand me downs’ from your parents, from a teacher, from your religious persuasion? Discard your outdated, disused beliefs and replace the space with new ones that are practical and authentic to you. 3. Dust and Polish When was the last time you took your values off the shelf and gave them a spit and polish? Our values are what guide us, our signposts, our indicators of alignment. Are your old values still important enough to you to be ‘displayed’? Show your top values with confidence and integrity. 4. Declutter You can’t function properly when you are residing in clutter. It constricts your movement, confuses your options, drains your energy. What noise and busyness is clogging up your mental space? What needs
to be cleared away so that you have room to breathe? Give your mind clear space to create the life you want. 5. Mirror Mirror When you look in the mirror is it covered with negative (re) marks? Do you see a distorted image? Is it clean enough to be able to see your true beauty? What disparaging self-talk is generated in your mind when you gaze at your life reflected? Wipe away those thoughts that don’t support your ability to shine. With the spring clean complete, your mind will have renewed vigour to support you in fresh growth and vibrant creation. Pad Thai Serves 1 Our chefs love Pad Thai as much as everyone, but it always turns into a gluey mess when cooked in large quantities. These instructions are for cooking Pad Thai for a single serve. If you are cooking for more than one, prepare all the ingredients then stir fry each serve separately. Should only take a few minutes a serve if you have everything ready in advance. The best known of all the Thai noodle dishes, a vendor can whip up a single plate of Pad Thai in a few minutes. 2 teaspoons preserved radish (from Asian supermarkets but omit if unavailable) 1 cup bean sprouts A few garlic chives or green spring onions, cut into 2cm pieces 2 tablespoons peanuts, roasted and coarsely crushed A good pinch of chilli powder Lime wedge Method: Place noodles in a bowl and cover with hot water. Leave for about half an hour, then drain. Heat vegetable oil in a wok and stirfry the shallot until it starts to colour, then add the egg and scramble. Add the palm sugar, tamarind water, fish sauce, bean curd, dried shrimp and radish. Stir to combine. Add the noodles and stir-fry until just starting to colour and soften. Add half the bean sprouts, all of the garlic chives and half the peanuts. Stir-fry until combined. Transfer to a serving plate and garnish with the remaining bean sprouts, peanuts and chilli powder. Cath Manuel is a local lady with an ‘organic green thumb’ who’s passionate about helping people develop a more sustainable life! Not only does she help people transform their gardens and lives (helping them save money long term), she adds her feminine touch at the grass roots level.

Gone are the days when you sat down to a dinner of meat and three veg. Having a dinner party these days involves checking if the guests are vegetarian, gluten free, lactose intolerant or purely into raw food. While this is a reflection of people making more conscious choices about what they put into their mouths, it also reflects the increasing number of people finding that they are unable to digest their food. More and more people are finding themselves intolerant of foods they have always eaten or reacting unfavourable to certain foods. In seeking relief from digestive imbalances, the focus is usually on removing the offending item from the diet. When faced with allergies and digestive problems naturopaths will often recommend a diet free of dairy, wheat and sugar. This will generally improve the situation but it doesn’t get to the root cause of the problem. Drugs, both prescriptive and recreational, excessive intake of alcohol, poor diet, restrictive diets and intense periods of stress can all deplete the body and create imbalances in the digestive system. Following periods of physical or toxic stress, food which you may have previously enjoyed can cause
discomfort and reactions in the body. The food has not changed but the machinery for digesting and metabolising it has. Ayurveda understands the vital importance of the digestive system in the processing of food and drink into all the parts of our physiology. From our varied and sometimes chaotic diet, bones, blood, tissues, cells and organ systems are created. The body tries to extract all the nutrients and goodness from what we consume to make fuel for our mind and body. How much we can absorb and utilise is dependent on the overall function of our digestive system. Through pulse diagnosis the state of the digestive system can be felt as well as the person’s unique constitutional type. When the liver is blocked with the effects of improperly digested substances or overloaded by processing pills and toxins, even a healthy, organic diet won’t be properly metabolised. If the digestive fire is weak and the channels of the body are coated with impurities, losing weight will be difficult even if the overall food intake is less. Similarly cholesterol can remain high, despite reducing fatty foods, if stress levels are high. Maharishi Ayurveda takes an holistic look at all the aspects of digestion and all the
factors that influence how we process our food. When, how, where and why are just as important as what we eat. Understanding of the doshas Vata, Pitta and Kapha are also necessary for determining the most appropriate diet for each individual. When balanced, a fiery Pitta can enjoy harder to digest foods including salads and some raw vegetables, while an airy Vata predominant person would feel overloaded and bloated from such a diet, preferring soupy, cooked foods. Earthy Kapha natured people are more prone to congestion and dullness if they eat lots of dairy products while Vata and Pitta types are balanced by moderate amounts of milk, ghee and soft cheeses. If you feel tired after eating, experience bloating, reflux or constipation, have a poor appetite, find it hard to lose or gain weight, lack energy (despite sleeping well) or have developed an allergy or intolerance, it is worth paying attention not only to what you eat but how well you are digesting your food. Spring is a fantastic time for growth, expansion and upliftment. The sun is out, the flowers are blooming, bees are buzzing and new shoots and buds spring forth with the fresh promise of ‘newness’; new activity, new creations and new beginnings. And so it is a perfect time within us to really shift up the emotional scale to those expansive, expressive, joyful, blissful powerful, radiating emotional energies. In fact this is our true nature yet you have to allow yourself to shift within to that uplifting vibration, in which you can fully perceive, attract and create more blissful experiences that reflect that. And you can do that consciously rather than just stumble across that occasionally, or by chance(or just at this time of the year!).
So how do you consciously shift your emotions? Notice where you are on the emotional scale at the present moment. Are you at the bottom (powerlessness, fear, despair), or a little further up at anger, blame, disappointment or frustration? Are you in the positive range of emotions such as contentment, or even further up

the scale at optimism, enthusiasm and passion? Or are you right at the top with joy/ empowerment, love and freedom? Wherever you are, set your intention towards feeling the emotion that is higher up from where you are. Ask yourself what is a better ‘feelingthought’ that you can have right now either about the dominant subject in your life or just switch over to the best ‘feeling-thought’ you can have about anything in your life. For example, if you are feeling doubt about something in your life and you’d like to move up a few notches to contentment ask yourself: ‘What am I content about right now?’ Feel your answer, luxuriate in it. Let yourself feel the contentment that life brings you through a particular aspect of your experiences. Once you’re fruitfully feeling contentment and radiating it out, let’s go for the gold at the top. What can you feel joy and bliss about right now? Ask, let it go and let the answer flow in. Let it soak through every cell, let it infiltrate every breath, let the joy and
bliss live here now within you. What is Oil Pulling? By Jenni Madison
I discovered coconut oil during my own healing journey while living in Thailand in 2009. During my initial research I actually wondered if it were truly possible that coconut products, in particular coconut oil could be so incredibly healthy, versatile and positively effective in so many ways. I then experienced the benefits for myself and realised that I was questioning the power of Mother Nature. When thinking about it in this way I decided that yes, She does have the power to heal, nourish and nurture us to better health and natural beauty. One of my most interesting discoveries in the use of coconut oil as a natural body medicine was the ancient Ayurvedic health tradition known as oil pulling. Oil pulling as we know it today, was introduced by Dr. F. Karach, MD. Dr. Karach claimed that oil pulling could help a variety of illnesses ranging from heart disease and digestive troubles to hormonal disorders. He said it helped him recover from a chronic blood disorder and arthritis, which at times was so painful he was bed ridden. He used the method in his medical practice with great success. Our mouths are the home to billions of
bacteria, viruses, fungi and other parasites and their toxins. It is these types of germs and their toxic waste products that cause gum disease, tooth decay and contribute to other potentially serious health problems. By expelling these harmful substances from our bodies, our health is greatly improved and we have more energy. Sunflower and sesame seed oils have been commonly used for oil pulling. I prefer to use coconut oil because of its many additional health benefits. According to Dr Bruce Fife, the antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties of coconut oil make it effective in brightening teeth, healing gums, preventing bad breath, quenching inflammation, and healing oral infections. It is also known to improve digestion because of its detoxifying effects on the body. WHAT TO DO: Oil pulling is best done first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Simply put a tablespoon of coconut oil inside your mouth and swish it around for 10-15 minutes. As you swish the fat enzymes in the oil literally ‘pull’ the toxins, bacteria and other debris out from the body’s cells, blood and gut, simultaneously cleaning the surface
of your teeth. When finished discard the oil and wash your mouth. Try not to swallow the oil because it is loaded with bacteria, toxins, pus, and mucous. If you use a mild flavored coconut oil it is quite pleasant in the mouth. If required this can be done more than once a day and is best done before meals on an empty stomach. A HANDY TIP: Some people say “15 minutes that’s a long time!” Here’s what I do, while swishing I get on with other things (have a shower, iron my clothes etc). The world is now re-discovering the wonderful health and beauty benefits of coconut oil. It seems to have re-emerged as the miracle healing oil. I now refer to it as Mother Nature’s magic. and yet those old ways keep showing up. Why was that? What sabotaged you, took you off track? Your goals were healthy, they made sense, right? So what kept undermining you and holding you to your old standards?

The answer is simple, though often misunderstood: your old programming was the main offender.
The start of a new season is a good time to take stock of our quality of life, of our accomplishments and our ongoing goals. For example, just take a moment to cast your mind back over bygone years and check out what happened to the New Years’ resolutions you made. You know the ones: the diet and get fit plans; the financial and career goals; the step up, step out, de-stress and have more fun plans; the live life more fully goals that we’ve all had at some time or other.
Think of it like this: your personal computer has an operating system – a version of Windows, or OSX if you own a Mac – and from time to time the software manufacturer issues an upgrade, a better, more advanced operating system. So you buy the new CD-ROM and insert it in the drive. What happens next is interesting: the new system seeks out the old software and uninstalls the components that are no longer needed. It removes the old, clunky programming, strips out the inefficient and superseded components.
If you’re like most people, you seemed determined at first; you may have gone gung-ho with your new action plans through January and into February.
Only then does it begin to install the new – hopefully more efficient, smarter, speedier – new software.
Then you probably hit some speed bumps, wobbled a bit in your resolve, got distracted or gave up, so that by March or April you were pretty much back to square one, back to your old ways. And now here it is, time for spring, time for a sloughing off of winter and time for new growth,

It’s a lesson we could all learn from. When we want to change our old, conditioned patterns of behavior in life, we first need to uninstall the old programming – then
any new programming becomes much more effective. But our normal practice is to simply ignore our old clunky software and repeatedly try to overwrite it with new programming. It’s an inefficient way to work. So, what types of old programming are we talking about here? It varies, and the most important ones are our old beliefs, rules, vows or promises, and values. Let’s use old beliefs as an example. Since early childhood each of us is conditioned with the limiting or negative beliefs of others. Even when they have the best of intentions, our parents, teachers, authority figures repeatedly instill in us what ‘we can’t’, ‘must not’ or ‘should not’ do, be or become and what we are not capable of. It is often programming that is simply handed on from generation to generation with little basis in truth – it’s just a “given” – and it can relate to restriction of culture, education or qualification, socio-economic background, gender, race, and so on. And our own experiences seem to add weight to these negative beliefs, when each time we try something new and fail we have an already installed “reason” for that lack of success.

Eventually the habitual beliefs become ingrained; modern research shows they ‘stick’ unconsciously with us at a deep level of awareness. Then, as we get older and, hopefully, wiser we move on from our old negativities – we educate and train ourselves, we work hard, we gain in ability and experience – and we may no longer consciously believe our old beliefs. We may have loads of new, more supportive and wholesome beliefs that more accurately reflect our reasonable expectations based on our proven abilities and our actual circumstances. If we have taken the advice of the modern personal growth movement, we have probably also practised positive affirmations and visualisations to confirm and reinforce our real potential with “I can”, “I will”, “I am able, competent, confident, talented”, and so forth. Yet what have we actually achieved? What we’ve done is simply to add more conditioning to the old. We’ve mixed it in, we’ve overwritten old programming with new. And the trouble with that is that the old junk is still clogging up our hard drives. The end result is a mess of conflict, overload, inefficiency and
eventually, possible crashing. So this spring try something different. Before making your new resolutions, simply stop, be still for a while in a quiet space and inquire deeply within: if there was old limiting programming in there, what might that be? Write out all the old beliefs, the childhood or later stuff that could hold you back – even if you don’t believe the old beliefs any more. Be ruthlessly honest with yourself. Then notice where this old stuff came from: whose is it really? Who passed it on to you? For each negativity, imagine packaging it up and handing it back to its originator, and then cutting any unhealthy energetic ties you might have with that person. Wring out some of that old conditioning, free up some internal space, then ring in the new by opening freshly and writing down your plans and goals for the coming 12 months – they will be more effortlessly achievable this way. Spring! The birds are chirping, the garden grows that little bit faster and the morning chill is drawn from the air. But, ‘OH NO!’ It’s almost bikini and board short weather. I know what you’re thinking…… “I need an exercise to do list, to tone up the body, and I need it fast”, “I hope my gym membership is still active”, “I wonder if Jenni next door wants to walk this spring?” Yes! It’s time to get cracking. After 10 years of being a trainer in the health and fitness industry, I believe I’ve seen it all. The rapid detox diets, the shake away your fat diets, just to name a few. But, in my opinion this is how you do it. Yes! It takes a bit of a plan. Yes! It takes a little time and effort. This is how you crack that whip and kick that body into shape. The approach to a health and fitness goal should be realistic, well defined, but with the ability to be massaged around for flexibility. Flexibility means a plan B for those times the kids don’t wish to barter or you run out of time for the gym visit. I believe everyone’s ultimate goal when undertaking a training regime is to be functionally fit and achieve the “I look good result”. This means training regularly, eating replenishing foods and
using a variety of training approaches. I believe variety is the key to spice up your training enthusiasm this spring. Progressions in training are progressions of the same exercise, from a basic movement, to the more advanced. Mix it up this spring and as your commitment grows, so does your fitness level and skill level; you will soon be able to complete harder, more complex exercises. I also believe for numerous reasons many people shy away from the benefits of weight training. Responses like, “weight training makes me feel bulky” are often heard. Weight training is a metabolic accelerator and if you want to get your body in shape and feeling strong, this is a must. NO EXCUSES! You can even use your own body weight to do push-ups, squats or lunges, just to name a few. This will have you looking great even in the comfort of your own home. Follow up your weight training with a short bout of high intensity interval training (HIIT). This is done at intervals of 1 minute hard followed by 1 minute of recovery for a duration of 16-30 minutes. We aren’t finished yet. I also believe

mobility work is essential and more so if you’re making a comeback from your winter hibernation. What’s mobility work? This is the new hip way of saying flexibility or stretching. It’s a more detailed way of stretching, performing specific stretching poses (like yoga) combined with training aids, such as foam rollers, that get the body limbered up ready for exercise, whilst also aiding recovery. But, all of the above is pointless if you don’t look at adequate nutrition to replenish and support the body. In short, take advantage of the salad and BBQ weather and you can’t go wrong. The sort of breeze reminding me to let go, with ease, things that are no longer needed and opening up to the new things that life brings. How appropriate as we head into spring? A favorite song comes on the radio – “These Little Wonders” by Rob Thomas – “Let it go, let it roll right off your shoulder, don’t you know, the hardest part is over, let it in, let your clarity define you in the end”... I feel those words can act as a reminder for anyone, in any situation, to let it go and move forward. Every circumstance in life presents us with opportunities to move. Even within the midst of chaos lives the seeds of creativity. Do you ever find yourself waiting or yearning for an opportunity? It may be challenging to see them, but they are always there. Three years ago, I received an opportunity for change - an opportunity to stop, rest and reflect on all areas of my life. Two integral areas were my health and my business which culminated in the birth of ‘My Life Blood’, a business which puts me in touch with the health of the human body every day. Change
involves movement and action; movement of thoughts from one perspective to others and movement of the body in a focused, dynamic way. Change can not occur without action. I can have positive thoughts about many and varied things but those thoughts will bring no change unless I put them into action in my life. Allergies and intolerances can not only make life difficult socially but can also wreak havoc with your health. Itchy eyes, runny noses and sneezing? Feeling tired and bloated after eating? Do you have headaches or just can’t shake that cold? There is a staggering increase in the number of people becoming more allergic or intolerant to foods and the environment recently, with Australia having among the highest prevalence of allergic disorders in the developed world. In fact, allergic diseases have more than doubled in western countries in the last 25 years. Nevertheless, having an allergy or intolerance doesn’t have to ruin your life. Understanding and treating the underlying causes and contributing factors concurrently with treating symptoms are important to longterm management. A genetic predisposition to allergies plays a role in developing symptoms. However, not all family members develop issues and there are numerous triggers which can precipitate allergic reactions or intolerances in anybody. Viral infections can impair the immune system so that allergies are more likely to
develop in the future. Intestinal integrity and healthy gut flora are vital to immunity. ‘Gastro bugs’, alcohol, soft drinks, preservatives and pesticides in foods are just a few examples of how we compromise gut health. With a damaged gut wall, we have a reduced ability to produce certain immunoglobulins (or antibodies) which prevent allergic responses. Food molecules pass through the gut wall triggering allergies or intolerances so that sinus, eczema and asthmatic symptoms can actually be the result of food intolerance, not environmental allergies. Nutritional deficiencies caused by stress, malabsorption or a poor diet can also reduce our ability to fight viruses and allergens, and detoxify from environmental pollutants. Fortunately, with accurate diagnosis and treatment regime, many allergic symptoms and food intolerances can be reduced or eliminated with natural therapies such as herbal medicine, homeopathics, acupuncture, nutrition and Bicom bioresonance therapy. CASE STUDY: A 55 year old lady presented with fatigue and sinus congestion which began when living in Asia 6 years ago. She was also suffering from digestive bloating,
slight eczema around her scalp line and ears and experiencing insomnia. Her asthma and hayfever were seasonal. A mosquito virus, sinus infection and gluten intolerance were causing her fatigue, digestive problems and insomnia. What is crystal healing? Crystal healing is the process of using crystals to bring our energy fields back into balance. This occurs through absorption and redistribution of frequencies into our energy centres. in Melbourne we might have a feature called “Grow Your Basket” so this could be the potted plants/orchard image Nat saw. I feel like I am a happy person. I have had a few health problems in the past. Thinking positively and making light of the situation - really helped me and my loved ones to cope. So I am glad Nat got this impression :) Another interesting point is I think I might have to go straight out and locate some Heamatite. I have an irrational fear of flying which is quite ironic as I love to travel. Also, my boyfriend is a helicopter pilot and I will often steer clear when the offer to fly up our gorgeous coastline is up for grabsCrazy isn’t it?!

Years ago, if you had asked me, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” I would have answered “a brain surgeon!”... and yes, I am being serious! Then I wanted to be the person who cured AIDS, then a radiologist, then (after a bout of glandular fever was successfully treated with great haste by a gentle & wise naturopath), a naturopath. Unfortunately at that time natural medicine was considered a bit ‘out there’ and at the ripe old age of 16, I was concerned about making a living from natural health, so off I went to study my great love ... BIOLOGY! Fast forward 20 years and my professional journey has included being a forensic biologist, crime scene trainer, sleep and respiratory scientist and educator and manager of a private medical company.
