adhika Vydianathan’s love affair with interior design began as a

As with all of her projects, Vydianathan put function first. “You need a

PLANT A SUCCULENT ARRANGEMENT
Who doesn’t love a beautiful succulent arrangement? The muted tones, interesting textures, and universal appeal make them an ideal decorative element. We checked in with Brandon Mckeown and Thurston Pope, the genius creators behind THE COASTAL SUCCULENT in Wilmington, NC, to learn how you can make your own beautiful arrangement.

DID YOU KNOW? After planting your succulants you only have to lightly mist them once a month.
L aye r in g You r Rocks : LAYER 1—SAND: Using your large spoon, coat the bottom of the vessel with ½”–1” of sand. You can use any type of sand—white, colored, black, etc. LAYER 2—SMALL RIVER ROCKS: Using your small spoon, place small river rocks around the edges of the vessel, ½”–1” high, coming 1” in towards the middle. You’ll want to keep at least a 3”–round circle in the center of the vessel open for soil (Layer 4). LAYER 3—SMALL PEBBLES: Using your large spoon, add a layer of small pebbles on top of the river rocks—again, ½”–1” high, coming 1” into the middle. (You can find these tiny pebbles at a pet store, labeled aquarium pebbles!) LAYER 4—SOIL: Using your hands, fill in the center hole, and fill all the way to the top rim of the vessel. Lightly pack down the soil with the back of your hand. Mckeown and Pope share, “We use cactus or succulent soil, but you can also use regular potting soil, mixed with a bit of your sand, creating a porous texture.”
P l a c i n g You r Plants : CHOOSE 4–6 PLANTS: Mckeown and Pope
suggest Jade, Haworthia, Crassula, and Echevaria. “We love mixing color, texture, and height to create dimension and keep the arrangement dynamic,” shares Mckeown. For this arrangement, they used purple, deep green, light green, and white succulents, along with a taller jade plant called Donkey’s Tail. “You have the chance to be totally creative, so if you want an all purple arrangement—go for it,” laughs Pope. BEFORE YOU BEGIN PLANTING, plan out your arrangement next to your vessel, so you have a general idea of where the plants will look best. Then one at a time, remove the plant from the container you purchased it in, and knock of the existing soil, exposing the roots. “Succulent roots are fine and silky, and a bit delicate, so take your time and gently massage the soil off with your hand,” advises Pope. USING THE SMALL SPOON, take out a spoonful of soil where each plant will go, creating 3”–deep pockets (almost all the way down to the sand base). You’ll want to give each plant a bit of breathing room from the next, but it’s okay if the roots end up slightly touching. Place your arrangement within 3’ of a window, where it can get loads of indirect sunlight. Don’t place in a west-facing windowsill, as direct evening sun can actually burn the leaves, and they will turn brown in spots. SECONDLY, LIGHT MIST: You’ll only need to lightly mist once a month! To check if your plant needs water, insert a toothpick to pierce the soil—if it’s bone dry, it needs water. If there is any moisture, give it a week and check again. Once it needs water, using a spray bottle on the mist setting, give 3–4 sprays at the root base of each plant, using regular tap water.

RESIZE YOUR SHELVES
START BIG, THEN SMALL
One size does not fit all! Begin with your tallest object, giving it some breathing room— we suggest an inch or two above the top of the tallest piece. Then adjust the remaining shelves accordingly. Give yourself permission to remove a shelf if it works better for the overall spacing.
Begin by placing your largest objects on different shelves, to create balance. (You don’t want all the large objects on the right side, for example.) Then arrange your books in stacks or rows, with the largest books being on the outer edges of the shelf, placed in descending order as they come in towards the center. When you create stacks, be sure the cover of the top book is aesthetically pleasing—the more curious and artistic, the better!

or interior designer Kristi Lane, no matter your design specialty—architect, interior designer, landscape—in the end, “design is design.” Utilizing this holistic approach, where each of these specialized facets are working in harmony to create a beautifully designed space, is how her firm, 3north, approaches each project. Founded in 1998 by Lane and two additional managing principles, the firm brings this philosophy of unified design to each project, whether it be commercial, corporate, hospitality, or residential. “It’s a fun way to approach a project. We are able to maintain design quality and control, while making it hassle-free for the client,” explains Lane. For this residential renovation, a beautiful 1930s home in the Westover Hills area of Richmond, VA, the fast-paced family of four was looking for a bold design filled with clever storage solutions. As with most homes of this era, it was originally comprised of small, closed off rooms, so Lane began by opening up the floor plan, allowing for the rear entry, kitchen, and dining room to work together while serving three different functions. The rear entry, which now includes a breakfast nook, is the most used entrance, so the space needed to be both visually appealing and functional. A Knoll Saarinen Tulip table with laminate oval top, Thonet chairs in a luxe blue green, custom cushions by Studio Bon, and an Arteriors Home sputnik light fixture create a clean and chic dining area for casual

The ceiling-height shaker-style cabinets store shoes, coats, bags, even outlets and an electronic charging station are discreetly tucked away. Lane shares, “The homeowner is admittedly not the tidiest person, so she needed a place that didn’t feel chaotic—where there is a place for everything, and everything is in its place.” This organized approach carried over into the kitchen, which is a fairly small space given the overall size of the home. The client did not want open cabinetry, opting for closed cabinets that could discreetly hide away any messes. “If you aren’t OCD, don’t install open cabinetry! Not everything works for everyone—pick the things 28

that work for you,” advises Lane. Because cooking extravagant meals isn’t part of the client’s daily life, Lane was able to keep the kitchen streamlined and efficient, while pushing the design a bit—using a bold herringbone backsplash in white carrera marble, the sleek Trinsic faucet by Delta, and a scene-stealing cobalt blue Viking range. A load-bearing beam between the kitchen and dining room leads to another creative solution—a two-foot-thick built-in bookshelf that offers room for books, accent pieces, and mementos. “You feel as though you’re actually walking through the bookshelves. It’s a special moment,” says Lane. The lower drawers include a luxuriously lined
and divided silverware drawer, and pegs in the lower drawer keep china safely stored. The custom-built ladder takes advantage of the vertical space, and can be pushed flush against the shelves when not in use. The soft green and silver dot wallpaper by Cole & Sons feels both traditional and contemporary, and acted as the inspiration for the dining room. Pulled from the wallpaper, the bookshelves are coated in a light gray and “Skylight” blue by Farrow & Ball. A tailored chandelier by Visual Comfort is suspended above a custom-made table by 501 Fabricators. “I love a round dining room table—everyone
is having the same conversation,” laughs Lane, “You can seat two or eight people, and it still feels cozy.” The dining room can remain casual for daily life, or easily be dressed up with a tablecloth and accessories for dinner parties or holidays. The house is now an organized environment that allows for the family to live peacefully in a thoughtfully designed space that enhances the way they live. N

Create zones for ease of use—establish a designated home for each category of items in your kitchen: cooking, baking, pots + pans, plates + bowls, glasses, mugs, flatware, cutlery, cooking utensils, and large appliances. Think about vertical storage solutions like wall shelves and racks, shelf risers, pull-out drawers, and lazy susans. PRO TIP: Use sticky notes to map out the best place for each zone mentioned above.
ST Y LE : Curate a Stylish Kitchen To curate a kitchen that’s the heart of your home, you want it to look and feel beautiful. Find decorative accents that you love—petite paintings, vases, a tea kettle in a vibrant color, tea towels, a comfortable rug to place under the sink, etc. PRO TIP: Place all food items into mason jars or BPA-free containers. It’s not just beautiful, it’s a healthy alternative to storing food in plastics that can release toxins.

his petite kitchen got a major makeover thanks to a new layout and bold design elements. If your kitchen is in need of refresh, follow along with these design tricks:
ADJUST THE LAYOUT to make the best use of the small space. This sounds obvious, but really consider if your current layout makes sense. In this kitchen, the back wall wasn’t being used and the stove was flush against the wall—making for a messy spaghetti night. By moving the sink and appliances around, the flow makes more sense. TRICK THE EYE. Hanging the cabinets flush with the ceiling makes the entire room appear taller and gives the limited countertop area some breathing room. Also, continuing the backsplash tile all the way to the ceiling adds height, drawing the eye upward. GO FOR BOLD DESIGN ELEMENTS that make a big impact. The gold light fixture, faucet, and cabinet hardware act as the jewelry of the room. The high-gloss, oversized 12” x 24” marble backsplash tiles reflect and bounce light, making the entire room sparkle.
