The Judges had a very hard time, in judging the competition this year, all the entries did a good job, as is the case every year, and the winners and those who came runner up, were all people who entered for the first time, which is very good indeed. I go round with the judges every year, and usually manage to pick at least one of the winners, but I myself failed to pick even one winner, the entries where that good. But as usual the judges came up with the winners as follows;

Campaign for

We hope to form a ‘Friends of Carlton & Netherfield Stations’ group to liase with East Midlands Trains. Latest information is available from St. George’s Centre, Victoria Road.

More Trains The present train service is very limited especially from Netherfield. There is a lot of support for a return to hourly services at both stations, so we can take advantage of reaching Radcliffe in 4 minutes and Beeston in 15 for example.

A meeting was held at St. George’s Centre on 6th July, and over 40 people came along. Notts County Council Public Projects Transport Officer and the Community Rail officer for the Skegness service have passed on our suggestions to East Midlands Trains.

Bin hazard in Our Streets Bins and glass boxes left out on the streets and pavements are a hazardous problem for pedestrians. Gedling Borough Council is aware of a number of roads in Netherfield where people are not removing their bin off the street within 24 hours of it being emptied, which is causing some problems for pedestrians, particularly those with a visual impairment and people in a wheelchair or who have a pushchair. Bins left out also make a street look unsightly. In September, the council will be visiting Dennis Street, Dunstan Street, Curzon Street, Forrester Street, Manvers Street, Arthur Street, Deabill Street, Cooper Street, Hodgkinson Street, Pearson Street and Godfrey Street to check that bins have been removed from pavements. If they find that bins have been left out, officers will talk to residents about the problem and encourage them to take their bins and glass boxes off the street. If you live on another street where there is a problem with bins being left out, please ring 0115 901 3621 to let the council know. 4

Following a spate of fire incidents across the county, the council would also recommend that you store your bins away from the house

The weekend of the 10th & 11th July saw Netherfield come together to celebrate the Parish’s 125th Anniversary. It was a fantastic weekend enjoyed by all. If you would like a copy of any of the photos printed please contact the St Georges Centre on 0115 9113302

NETHERFIELD NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ASSOCIATION Formed 25th July 2007.

FAREWELL FROM THE CHAIRMAN Under the constitutional rules of the Neighbourhood Watch Association, Mick Smith JP stood down as the chairman of the NHWA on 27th July. In his review before handing over the reins to new chair Carol Hellewell, he stated that Netherfield was a much Happier, Healthier and Safer than when the association was formed in July 2007. In the lead up to the formation of the NHWA, Netherfield had gone through a particularly difficult period, where many people had stated they were frightened to walk the streets, and it is reassuring to say that the because of the close work with the police and neighbourhood

with Notts County Council for a speed reduction and crossing outside Chandos Street Primary School during this financial year. Other work has included the successful ‘Helping Hands Award’, which began at Netherfield Primary School and is now a county wide project which this year involved over 2000 pupils from around the county. In ending his review Mick stated that he left a stable framework for getting all community issues resolved which make Netherfield a Healthier, Happier and Safer place for everyone. He finished by stating the work of the NHWA could not have been done without the continual help from

wardens this is no longer the case. This upturn in community feeling was clearly demonstrated at the recent 125th Anniversary of the Parish, which succeeded in bringing all members of our close knit community together. The period of the end of 2007 and beginning of 2008 was particularly successful with a 33% reduction in crime and led to Mick receiving an award from the Police Authority. Netherfield’s NHWA has had many significant achievements over the last three years, including successfully petitioning for the erection of safety barriers at the bottom of Chandos Street. There has also been an agreement made

Lorna Mellors of Gedling Borough Council, Bob Vaughn-Newton crime reduction manager, the Netherfield Forum, Inspector Al Pearson and his predecessor Mark Towlson, Sgt Carol Adams de Bank and the PCSO’s, Vernon Coaker MP, former County Councillor James O’Riordan and current County Councillors John Clarke and Allen Clarke and finally Cllr Barbra Miller, In summing up Mick promised to continue his work as Vice Chairman of the NHWA and Head coordinator of Chandos Street and Kappler Close. Once again men’s Health was a priority for the GPs at Netherfield Medical Centre this summer. We took part in the “Be Well – Feel Well” campaign on 26th June when we ran our second successful Street Doctor event on Chandos Street. Our Patient Participation Group collared men who were out shopping and we offered them a Well Man Check. This included a blood pressure check, blood sugar check, urine checks and lots of advice about general health matters. We also provided advice related to smoking and alcohol. Many of the men who consulted were not regular attendees at their surgery and we identified several individuals who had previously undiagnosed medical conditions.
