Riverfront Seafood KINGSPORT — It’s been a “fast and furious” year so far for Riverfront Seafood and its new owners Russ and Serena Burdine. And there’s no slowdown in sight. The fresh seafood restaurant, a longtime local favorite, is now open for lunch on Sundays with seatings from 11 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. The core of the menu features selected Riverfront staples that guests already enjoy and introduces new items as Sunday specials. If guest response to a particular “Sunday special” warrants, that item might be added to the regular menu. Russ and Serena said they remain committed to carrying on the legacy of Riverfront founder Wayne Michelli, but they also will be putting their own stamp on things. So far, the response from the public has been overwhelming, they said. “It’s been incredible the support we’ve gotten from both new guests and our regular customers,” Russ said. “We’ve seen lots of new faces and we’ve not lost any of the old faces. It’s unreal the support we’ve had. And Wayne is happy for us.” Though there have been some changes to accommodate the growth, the focus is still on fresh seafood, quality and consistency. The menu and the restaurant’s staff – with the exception of Michelli – hasn’t changed. Outside, the expansive deck overlooking the Holston River has been power-washed and restained, and the Burdines are looking into having it covered. Other improvements include updated landscaping. Located at 1777 Netherland Inn Road overlooking the Holston River, Riverfront Seafood Restaurant is one of just a handful of locally-owned, full-service restaurants in Kingsport. Started as a labor of love in 1991 by Wayne Michelli and wife Angie, the restaurant has grown from its humble market beginnings to its current location complete with patio seating, express lunches, early bird specials, a full bar and a fresh market where you can purchase quality raw seafood and prepare it for yourself at home. Many of you may remember where it all started. We lived in a little house (and by little I mean a one bedroom with a family of 4) on Gravely Road. Below the house was a two car garage. This is where my dad made a living for our family. It was in that garage where he repaired and painted many cars. I remember being upstairs in the house when he was painting and not being able to walk around much or jump at all because the dirt from the ceiling above the garage would have fallen into the fresh paint. My mom would dust the furniture and we always knew what color he had painted with that day because it would be on the dust cloth. As the years went by, we built a small shop beside of the house. It was in this shop at the age of 18 that I decided I wanted to work for my dad. Although there wasn’t a need for a secretary, my dad created a place for me. He had one office with one desk and one chair, which we shared. When he would come in to sit down I would go to my special seat which was our cooler that had our lunch in it. Haha! The business began to flourish. After a year, we started constructing another building directly behind the one we were in at the time. I was so excited to pick out the decor in the new office and to have my own desk and chair. We started getting several direct repairs from the insurance companies and soon we had cars everywhere. Many of you may remember that situation of trying to get in and out of our parking lot, which was in a curve on Gravely Road. After being in this building for two years my dad decided to take a huge risk and buy property on Lynn Garden Drive to construct our present building. I remember telling him, “Dad, I don’t think this is a good idea”. He assured me that everything was going to be just fine. He had never let me down before so I trusted him and of course, he was right. We have been so blessed. Our only goal has been to please our customers. They are our advertisement. They are what matters to us. My husband Jeff is now running the show while I stay at home raising 6 future B&E employees. Jeff has grown the business even more. We have since added a new building for all our frame work to meet the demands of our customers and insurance companies. I just want to say thank you to our customers for voting for us. Food City K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc. is the corporate banner for the Food City supermarket chain, and is an acronym for its base trade area of Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. In 2015, the company also purchased 29 supermarkets (including 21 pharmacies) in Chattanooga, Tennessee and North Georgia. This privately held, family-owned company has grown over the years by expansion, new store construction and acquisitions. Today, they operate 15 locations in southeastern Kentucky, 24 in southwest Virginia, 64 in east Tennessee, 19 in Chattanooga, Tennessee and 9 in north Georgia. The 131-store chain includes 123 Food City locations (with 105 pharmacies and 102 fuel/convenience stores), 6 Super Dollar Food Center limited assortment and 2 wine & spirits stores. Serving a current trade area of over 1.4 million households, with a population of 3.3 million, they also operate their own 1.2 million square-foot distribution center, located in Abingdon, VA. Having served their neighbors for over 100 years, the Food City banner dates back to a store opened in Greeneville, TN in 1918. K-VA-T Food Stores’ real beginning came in 1955 when Jack C. Smith (founder), his father Curtis, cousin Ernest and uncle Earl opened their first store in Grundy, VA. Many of the pharmacies are now equipped with a drive-thru for greater convenience. Food City Gas N’ Go fuel stations offer competitive prices on high quality gasoline. Many now sell diesel fuel. A number of stores include national or local branch banks, offering ATM’s and a full range of financial services. The company also offers the added convenience of GoCart curbside pick-up at 45 locations throughout their market area. The GoCart program allows customers to select their purchases on-line. Their order is filled by a professional shopper and loaded into their vehicle when they arrive at the store. And, they can pay for their purchases on-line or by credit or debit card at the time of pick-up. Food City Home Delivery powered by Instacart is also available in 93 of their locations, providing shoppers with the flexibility of same-day delivery to their doorstep.
