Eagle Scout Project: Adventure Is Out There Sam Tallent, Troop 48

Sam Tallent, 17, recently sought out an Eagle Scout project in order to achieve his Eagle rank in Scouting BSA. While many young adults choose to build their projects, Sam was inspired to do a public art mural. Sam did some sketches and reached out to the Downtown Kingsport Association, who is collaborating with the Kingsport Office of Cultural Arts on a Creative Placemaking project for the alleyway that runs parallel to Main Street between the Inventor Center and Bellafina Chocolates. After reaching out to the groups, Sam was able to set up a series of meetings to propose his mural project. It was suggested that Sam meet some local artists for tips and inspiration. He sat down with Suzanne Barrett Justice, a local artist who owns a gallery in downtown Kingsport. Sam and Suzanne went through his sketches and found a hot air balloon sketch that was inspired by Kingsport’s Funfest, and by the fun whimsy of the movie “Up.”

“I want to inspire people to get out, do their own thing, and inspire others to reach for the sky!” Eagle Scout Sam Tallent

It was explained to Sam that in order to do public art in downtown, he was first going to have to fund his project and then clear it with the Public Art Committee. Sam said, “There were a lot more steps than I thought it would be.” In November, 2019, Sam brought his proposal to the Public Art Committee, showing them sketches of his work. The proposal passed unanimously among the committee, and Sam was ready to firm up contracts to get the art on the wall. Contracts had to have the agreement of the artist and the building owner. When asked what Sam hopes for viewers of the mural, he said, “I want to inspire people to get out, do their own thing, and inspire others to reach for the sky!” Sam has been a member of Troop 48 in Colonial Heights since March of 2013. He is currently a student at South High School, and plans to attend ETSU in the fall. Sam will be earning his Eagle Scout rank in February, 2020. The Creative Placemaking Alleyway project is underway with the help of a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.

KINGSPORT BALLET TO STAGE COPPELIA April 2020 Production at Northeast State

Kingsport, TN – After 25 years, Kingsport Ballet prepares to re-stage the ballet classic, Coppelia, under the direction of Valeria Sinyavskaya and the assistant direction of Leonid Flegmatov.

Kingsport Ballet company dancers and students from the school, as well as invited professionals. Dr. Coppelius will be performed by KB’s own Leonid Flegmatov.

While this ballet was originally staged in 1870 in Paris by the Imperial Theater Opera (later Paris Opera Ballet) Modern-day productions are traditionally derived from the revivals staged by Marius Petipa for the Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg in the late 19th century.

“I think the colorful, comic story of this ballet is super charming, and the heart-warming music of Leo Delibes is sure to win hearts” said executive director, Bertina Dew. “Twenty five years is a long time – we have changed and grown exponentially as an organization since then. This will be a whole new ballet from what we staged in the 1990s.”

Coppelia is a comic ballet centered around a doll, Coppelia, who was lovingly created by the eccentric toy-maker Dr. Coppelius. She is so lifelike that a handsome village boy is infatuated with her and determined to win her love, despite the fact that he is already engaged to be married! Set in an old-world village, the ballet in three acts takes the audience along on an entertaining and charming ride, from the village in Act One, into Dr. Coppelius’ study in Act Two, where in the shadows all manner of life-size toys appear so realistic as be able to move and dance and play all on their own. Though at times comical, the plot gets complicated and heart-wrenching, as Swanhilda and her friends sneak into Dr. Coppelius’ study and she fools him into believing Coppelia has come to life. “I am very much enjoying working on this ballet with our company,” said artistic director Valeria Sinyavskaya. “Unlike the grand, regal ballets that we usually stage, such as Swan Lake, Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia is charming and approachable, and the perfect ballet for our current company.” The cast of Coppelia will be made up of

Kingsport Ballet will launch educational, children-centered activities related to the ballet, such as a doll-making workshop. Children ages 6-12 can create their own “Coppelia,” using fabric and decorative objects they will embellish, snip, sew, and glue their ballerina dolls into their very own creation. Participants will be invited to bring their unique doll to the see the ballet and qualify to win a beautiful keepsake. Check kingsportballet.org for details. Area artists and designers have collaborated to create sets and re-create costumes for the ballet to be staged at Wellmont Performing Arts Center at Northeast State, April 16-19, 2020. The daytime school performance takes place Thursday the 16th at 10am. Public performances will be held Friday and Saturday, April 17 and 18 at 7pm and Sunday, April 19 at 2:30. Kingsport Ballet is funded in part by the Tennessee Arts Commission, under an agreement with the General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts. As a member of Tennesseeans for the Arts, Kingsport Ballet promotes specialty license plates, which help support the arts in the state of Tennessee: www.tnspecialtyplates.org

Symphony of the Mountains presents finale concerts of the 2019-2020 season Symphony of the Mountains under the direction of its Music Director Cornelia Laemmli Orth concludes its 2019 -2020 season with a “Happy Birthday Beethoven Celebration” on Saturday, March 14 at 7:30 pm at the Toy F. Reid Eastman Employee Center. After Mendelssohn’s Beautiful Melusine Overture, Canadian violinist Christina Bouey will perform Beethoven’s Violin Concerto to celebrate the great master’s 250th Anniversary. Ms. Bouey will perform the work on a Stradivarius violin. Brahms’s monumental Symphony No. 1, with its many Beethoven quotes forms the second half of the concert. The work is often lovingly called Beethoven’s Tenth Symphony and is only one of many examples of Beethoven’s influence on other composers. Tickets are $30 for adults. Children and students of all ages are free. The Voices of the Mountains, Symphony of the Mountains’ own chorus, under the direction of Dr. Matthew Potterton will present their final concert of the season on Friday, April 3, 2020 at 7:30 pm at the Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City. This concert features choral works by American composers, two of whom are still living. Entitled American Pastorales, these works include poems and vignettes telling of life in Western U.S.A.; of growing up in a family home in Los Angeles; and adaptations of familiar American ballads and love songs. This musical event will evoke memories, dreams and reflections on the unique experiences of growing up as an American and a reminder of our common heritage. Tickets are $15 for adults. Children and students of all ages are free.

The Symphony of the Mountains Youth Orchestras will present a Spring Concert on Saturday, April 4 at 2:00 pm at the Seeger Chapel at Milligan College in Elizabethton, TN. Both the Primo Orchestra under the direction of Wendy Royston and the Youth Orchestra under the direction of Dr. David Kovac will treat us to an afternoon of beau-

tiful music from a variety of time periods. The concert will feature the two winners of the Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition, Elizabeth Burch, playing a movement of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto and Grace Roberts playing a movement of the Crusell Clarinet Concerto No. 2. The following Monday, April 6, at 10:00 am the Youth Orchestra will repeat the concert for the local public schools at the McGlothlin Center for Arts at Emory and Henry College in Emory, VA. Admission is free for all. As with all Symphony of the Mountains concerts, our Youth Orchestras further our mission of Entertaining, Educating & Enriching.

The Symphony of the Mountains season will reach a glorious finale with the 13th annual Symphony Gala on April 4 at 6:00 pm at the Marriott Meadowview Conference Resort. We will celebrate the 250th birthday of Ludwig von Beethoven with a Viennese Ball. The event features a multicourse dinner with interesting wine pairings, musical entertainment by Symphony of the Mountains Musicians and the Fred Goodwin Band, dancing and both a live and silent auction. The Gala is strategic in raising funds to help Symphony of the Mountains continue to present the magic of music to Kingsport, Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia and Western North Carolina. Tickets to the Gala are $135 and are available online at www.symphonyofthemountains.org or from our box office at 423-392-8423.

Suzuki Talent Education of Appalachia Music Lessons in violin, viola, cello and piano. Ages: 3 to adult. Renaissance Center, Kingsport, TN 423.246.1367 www.steamusic.org Upcoming Recitals: (Free and open to public) Friday, April 3 – 7:00 pm Solo Recital Renaissance Center Room 310 Saturday, April 4 – 11:00 am Solo Recital Renaissance Center Room 310 Suzuki Talent Education of Appalachia has been providing music education and training in violin, viola, cello and piano for over 50 years in the TriCities Region. Talent Education or Ability Development are other names for the Suzuki Method, chosen because the founder, Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, believed the influences from a student’s environment resulted in the development of talent or ability. Many arguments for inborn talent have been issued over the years, but the wisdom of surrounding students with a rich set of knowledge has shown to be invaluable in learning. Ear training and observation play a huge part in music learning and can transform a musically untrained student into one who plays with technical grace and also a great deal of artistic expression. Dr. Suzuki believed in the value of the arts to provide not only the pure enjoyment of expression and the act of capturing imagination, but also as a means of communication between human beings. He believed in the value of creating a positive and nurturing atmosphere for learning. Suzuki Method fosters a method of learning that aspires to create beautiful hearts and noble human beings as they learn the skill of playing an instrument. Growing ability in students of every age is our goal.

Rainbow Fish SHOW DATES: March 6, 7, 13, 14 @ 7pm March 7, 8, 14, 15 @ 2pm School Show March 13 @ 10am THE STORY: When Rainbow Fish refuses to share his (or her!) vibrant, shimmering scales, the whole ocean seems to turn against the vain creature. Unhappy that no one adores him anymore, the Rainbow Fish seeks out the wise Octopus, whose tentacles can also be played by separate actors. Octopus helps the young fish learn that it’s far better to be admired for being kind than for being beautiful. With a bubbly, energetic score and a script that invites wonderful creativity and flexibility, the universal message at the heart of this one-of-a-kind musical becomes much more than just a simple children’s story….

A Streetcar Named Desire SHOW DATES: March 27, 28, April 3, 4 @ 7pm March 28, 29 April 4, 5 @ 2pm A Streetcar Named Desire is presented as part of the KTG: Downtown series.

“Dr. Suzuki believed in the value of the arts to provide not only the pure enjoyment of expression and the act of capturing imagination, but also as a means of communication between human beings.”

THE STORY: Production contains adult themes. In one of the most renowned plays of the American theater, Blanche DuBois, a schoolteacher from Kentucky, arrives in New Orleans and takes a streetcar named “Desire” to the French Quarter, where her sister, Stella, and Stella’s husband, Stanley Kowalski, live barely above squalor. Blanche’s affectations of refinement set her immediately at odds with blue-collar Stanley, who is further incensed when he learns his wife’s aristocratic inheritance—the family estate—has been forfeited to creditors. Believing that Blanche has sold the estate for personal profit and is swindling Stella and Stanley from sharing in the proceeds, Stanley disdains and demeans Blanche, who fights back in the only way she knows: with her genteel femininity. The Kowalskis’ Elysian Fields apartment becomes a pressure cooker of sensuality and class tensions, until ultimately erupting in some of the most iconic dramatic moments seen on the modern stage.
