****************************While enslaved, as free people and beyond
African-Americans were primarily responsible for making and caring for clothing.
When fashions of the past are discussed or represented in the media, black women and men are often conspicuously absent.
Regardless of the era, Black people were present and they had to wear something.
Social and financial circumstances prevented most from matching the quality of those better off, though some situations demanded the same standards of comportment as anyone else. For African Americans there was also the added pressure of how dress, style and grooming are tied to respectability and therefore access to resources and success.
It is the aim of Black & Vintage to understand – through exploring historical texts, archival material, books, oral histories, et al – the circumstances of life and dress in relation to this Black History.
